Yachty by Nature

Yacht rock outfits, yacht rock outfits 101.

Whether you just discovered the art of smooth or been digging smooth soft rock for a while now, the subject of Yacht Rock Outfits is on your mind. Let me just say, for those about to dock, we salute you. There is an unmistakable moment when Yacht Rock is revealed to you. For me, it happened at a fancy industry party in LA. This fab girl came up and mic dropped it so smoothly to my then 80’s band, Neon Nation , saying “you guys play any yacht rock”? Holy crap, I pretty much spit out my drink and fell to the floor wondering what I was in for.

“You walked in to the party, like you were walking onto a yacht.”

Yachty Attire

The rest is history and I’m now well into 7 years of playing keyboards in a nationally successful yacht rock band, Yachty by Nature . No doubt, I’m living that dream and it goes without saying, I’m deep in the yacht myself. With weekly yacht party after monthly yacht wedding and more, I’m becoming a Yacht Attire expert in thought and practice and already guiding the band and others in this area of fashion.

Truly, if you get the clothing right, enough people with that common goal, just add yacht music and the fun ensues. Truth be told, I’ve watched as a room full of punk rockers that committed to the groovy, eclectic yacht rock dress code transformed like you wouldn’t believe.  They turned a simple celebration with a yacht rock band into a full scale 1978 throwback LOVE FEST and the clothes were off the hook. The energy, the vibe, the clothes, the music became something so magical all its own. Build the yacht and they will sail to it.

So, next time you are having a yacht party or watching your favorite yacht rock band indulge yourself with an epic outfit that will make all it happen. It’s not just the music, the band, the vibe, the look, the energy. It’s the sum of its parts and those smooth outfits have the mighty power to transfix your situation.

The Captain’s Hat…

hefner yacht rock outfits attire clothes fashion yachty by nature

Yep, you guessed it, the fastest coronation to yacht rock royalty is the Captain’s Hat.  Buy one, make one, bedazzle one or borrow one. In fact, the sky is the limit here so let your creativity reign if you are gonna go for it.  But, just get one somehow, some way and you are on the yacht. In fact, Broner makes a very comfortable, quality, straightforward and good looking hat that fits well.  Additionally, it avoids the cheap fit and look of those basic hats on Amazon. Do yourself a favor, get a hat or dig deep in the vault and find a classic, vintage, or authentic captain’s hat online. Additionally, we’ve seen some pretty cool and unique creations out there, but for simplicity, fit, and value, Broner is the answer.  Lastly, remember what Hefner did for the captains hat!

Yacht Rock Stripes get it done…

No matter what color, stripes will be the 2nd easiest way to begin your yacht fashion transformation. Put on a red and white striped shirt (or blue or black mainly) and you’ll be sailing in no time. In fact, stripes are probably the #1 most sighted outfit at a yacht rock party. Just know that it’s only the start. When you accessorize over the stripes with a complementary pant color or scarf, ascot, belt, and obviously the captain’s hat or more, you’ve earned your captain’s bars quicker than you can say Ship Shape! Don’t forget to keep it simple, too much or conflicting stripes will sink that ship just as fast.

That 70’s look…

Gettin’ Yachty @ Costello’s in Mission Viejo

Due to the strong connection between the silly, the goofy, the fun and the yacht party, going retro will set a course for adventure. Call it the Ron Burgundy effect or just throwing back to the 1977 duds they wore on Midnight Special , this look is uber sexy and may attract the opposite sex faster than any other yacht look. In fact, you don’t have to look too far to find polyester or denim clad jean meat at many yacht rock concerts. Additionally, the fake mustache works wonders whether you go 70’s vintage or any different yachty outfit.  More importantly, get bonus points on your yacht rock outfits if you can get the feathered hair going!  Polyester, print shirts, and for the ladies, buy that disco dress and some fabulous glasses and you’re ready to yacht!

The Yacht Club, Tennis Club, Golf Club…

Think Caddyshack, Marina del Rey, golfing, the harbor, and tennis. Moreso, put a tennis sweater over that polo or even better go up the ladder and put on that navy blue blazer with an ascot and some yellow glasses. Actually, that’s the calling card for us in Yachty by Nature! Pretend that you’re christening the Flying Wasp or dropping anchor with Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack and you’ll be flying indeed. Or even better, watch Caddyshack to get in the mood for your party and let inspiration take hold…and even a few classic movie lines. In fact, if you look around the golf club or yacht club scenes, your creativity is sparked immediately.  The outfits jump right off the screen and wreak of Yacht Club greatness.  Speaking of movies, we’ve even seen a die hard Yachty arrive in the Goldie Hawn outfit from the movie Overboard. Keep your yacht rock outfits classy San Diaaaaaago!

Go Hawaiian on your Yacht Rock outfits…

Get Nauti !

Lastly, this category is a catch all for everything nautical, yachty, and seaworthy.  Use your imagination or stick to the basics.  You can don the captain’s outfit with shoulder bars easily for the Love Boat vibe.  Or, you can just look like Charlie’s Angels coming off a yacht in 1978.  Literally any type of ocean, beach, seaside, or otherwise yachty type of clothing will do.  The scarf around the neck, the boat shorts and the Nantucket red pants and plaid shirt all qualify as supremely yachty fashion.  When in doubt, check yourself by asking, “would I wear this outfit in the summer in Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard?”  Most importantly, if the answer is yes, you are yacht rock camera ready.  In fact, let’s not forget the boat shoes, deck shoes, or Sperry Top Siders all together.

Yacht Rock Outfits Wildcard…

Never forget that there’s really no authority on this subject so you can always just go for it.  Sometimes, the more uniform, standard, and strict we get on the yacht, the more mundane we become.  Therefore, don’t be afraid to dive into the vanity t-shirt, go stripes and ascot, and generally mix it up.  There are no hard and fast rules behind the Yacht Rock outfit, just your creativity and passion for the music.  From experience, we’ll go captain’s outfit one day and crazy boat shirt the next.  Ultimately, we’ve seen it all from the stage and relish the moments when people go wild with it.  In fact, there’s probably even a yacht rock adjacent area for the Pirate Party as well.  Captain Crunch sightings aside, those parties can really bring together the nauti, yachty, knotty by nature and then some.  In the end, go for it and see what happens.  It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eyepatch.  Honestly, it’s all about the fun so get Kraken!!!

As always, let the vibe be your guide.  Thus, for your next yacht rock themed party, concert, or just a Yachty night on the town, get your ensemble going.  Whether you are new to the yacht or an old deck hand, that outfit will crank up the experience.  So, commit to making that statement with your yacht clothing or up your game and improve on the garb you already have.  As we well know, you can never have enough options to mix it up for a fun night with Yachty by Nature or some other occasion.

Happy to be your guide here.  Feel free to comment and add some great ideas on this post or on social media. #yachtrock #yachtrockoutfits #yachtybynature #yachtattire #yachtrockfashion

Thanks for giving props to Tiki Caliente! I would like to point out that the most proper Hawaiian shirt to wear to a Yacht Rock concert is one that would have been for sale between 1978 and 1983! Think to yourself, would Magnum PI or Pablo Cruise wear this? And if so, bring it on! Most Magnum PI kind of Hawaiian shirts go great with a white jacket and white shorts. Vintage late ‘70s and early ‘80’s Hawaiian shirts can be found Online in Etsy yacht rock shops, and on eBay. Not expensive, and so ”vintage smooth”. Look like a pro, and be “era appropriate”. Girls can find vintage 70’s nautical dresses on Etsy, too!

THIS is everything!!! I love it Carl!!!

Ahoy Jenny! THanks so much for the kind compliment 🙂 As you know, we’re super inspired and love switching up the outfits, attire, clothing, and costumes. Yacht Rock rules!

The ultimate dress code for a yacht rock party is undoubtedly the white linen suit. This breezy and stylish fashion choice has been a staple for gentlemen who go for function and style over anything else. Linen suits are perfect for summer events due to their lightweight and comfortable material. White linen suits are particularly popular in yacht rock parties as they represent the nautical theme and give a fresh and crisp appearance to the wearer.

When it comes to accessorizing a white linen suit, opt for a statement wristwatch, a slick pair of white loafers or boat shoes, a brown belt, and a silk pocket square. Avoid extravagant jewelry and trendier accessories as the white linen suit speaks for itself and adding too much would seem too much. You could also complete your look with a Panama hat or a fedora to add an extra flair to the overall ensemble.

As for the shirt, avoid white and choose pastel colours such as blue, baby pink, or lavender. You can choose to either wear a traditional collared shirt or something more relaxed like a polo shirt. Make sure your shirt fits you comfortably as you don't want anything to be tight-fitting while enjoying your yacht rock party.

One thing to keep in mind here is that the white linen suit requires some maintenance, as it is prone to creasing and wrinkling. To avoid this, dry clean and steam it before the event and avoid sitting for long periods. If you need to sit down, use a towel to lay over the seat to prevent any dirt or stains on the suit.

In conclusion, wearing a white linen suit to a yacht rock party defines class and sophistication. It gives you a vintage and relaxed aura that matches the vibe of the event. So, make sure to invest in a good quality white linen suit to make the best of this show-stopping fashion statement.

Golden Dress, Feet Impress: Matching Shoes for Your Shimmering Ensemble

To rock floral print shorts at a yacht party, choose a bright and vibrant color that complements your skin tone. You can go for a more vintage look by choosing a high-waisted short with a tropical floral print or a more modern look by going for a bold, graphic floral print with a cropped hem. Pair your shorts with a white boat-neck tee or an off-the-shoulder crop top to complete the look.

If you're feeling like you want to add a little more pizzazz to your outfit, accessorize with a few statement pieces like oversized sunglasses, a straw hat, or a chunky gold necklace. Block heel sandals or espadrilles are a great choice for footwear as they're comfortable and give you an elevated look.

For a beachy, laid-back vibe, you can wear your floral print shorts with a bikini top or a tank top. To glam up the outfit, opt for a flowy blouse or a linen blazer that pairs well with the shorts. Add a pair of strappy heels and a clutch to complete this chic look.

If you're nervous about wearing bright florals, start with a muted or smaller print. It's easy to pair these shorts with a simple top, sandals, and a crossbody bag for a relaxed yet put-together outfit. Overall, whether you're dressing for a casual or formal yacht rock party, you can never go wrong with floral print shorts. They're versatile, easy to style, and most importantly, comfortable, which is key when you want to enjoy your day on the water.

Snow Sports Attire: Alternatives to Snow Pants

One classic style of retro sunglasses that you can opt for is the aviator sunglasses. They were popular among pilots in the 70s and have since become a fashion icon. Aviator sunglasses have a timeless appeal and are known for their teardrop shape and thin metallic frame.

Another style that comes to mind when we talk about retro sunglasses is the wayfarer sunglasses. They were originally made popular by Ray-Ban in the 50s and were seen on celebrities like Audrey Hepburn and James Dean. Wayfarer sunglasses feature a thick plastic frame with a trapezoidal shape and are perfect for a sailor-inspired outfit.

If you're looking to make a bold statement, you can opt for oversized sunglasses. In the 70s, celebrities like Jackie O and Farrah Fawcett were often seen sporting oversized sunglasses. These frames typically have a thick, oversized frame and large lenses that cover most of your face.

When it comes to the color of the frame, you can never go wrong with tortoise shell frames. It's a classic pattern that has stood the test of time and adds a touch of sophistication to your outfit. If you're feeling brave, you can also opt for brightly colored frames that have made a resurgence in recent years.

In conclusion, retro sunglasses are the perfect accessory to complement your yacht rock party outfit. When it comes to dressing up for a yacht rock party, there's no denying that the Captains hat is an absolute must-have. Nothing quite sums up the nautical theme and laid-back vibe of the yacht rock genre quite like the iconic Captain's hat.

Choosing the right hat will depend on your personal style, but a classic white Captains hat with a black brim is always a safe choice. You may also want to consider a navy Captains hat, both colors will complement the nautical themed outfit perfectly.

It's important to note that the Captain's hat works best when paired with other elements of nautical clothing. Consider wearing a navy blazer, white trousers, and a blue and white Breton-striped shirt. Accessories such as striped canvas shoes and a rope belt will also tie in with the overall theme.

If you're looking for a more relaxed, casual look, consider switching out the blazer and trousers for a pair of navy shorts and a white polo shirt. Add a pair of classic deck shoes, and you'll have nailed the perfect yacht rock look.

Bid Day Style: Tips for Looking Your Best

If you're attending a yacht rock party, then culottes and espadrilles are a great choice for your outfit. These two fashion pieces have a nautical vibe to them and will give you the perfect look for a yacht rock party. Culottes are breezy, comfortable, and stylish, while espadrilles are casual, chic, and practical.

Culottes are wide-legged cropped pants that were popular in the 1960s and have made a comeback in recent years. They are versatile and can be dressed up or down, making them perfect for a yacht rock party. You could wear a pair of high-waisted culottes with a tucked-in blouse or a boxy tee for a more casual look.

Espadrilles are a summer staple that effortlessly screams nautical. These shoes have a rope sole and are made from canvas or cotton, making them perfect for walking on the dock or on the sand. You could wear a pair of espadrilles that are flat or with a slight heel to add a bit of height to your outfit.

To complete the look, you could add some accessories like a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a cross-body bag. A hat will protect your face from the sun while also adding some glamour to your outfit. Sunglasses are a must-have for any outdoor party to protect your eyes from the bright sun. A cross-body bag will keep your essentials at hand while also being hands-free for all the dancing and socializing you'll be doing.

In conclusion, culottes and espadrilles are a great choice for a yacht rock party. They're both comfortable, stylish, and versatile, making them a perfect fit for any setting. You could dress them up or down with accessories like a hat, sunglasses, and a cross-body bag to create the perfect outfit for a day out on the water.

Choosing the Perfect Bra for Square Neck Tops

If you're attending a yacht rock party, you'll want to dress the part. One great option for men is a colorful polo shirt. These shirts are synonymous with the laid-back, breezy style that's typical of the yacht rock look. They're perfect for the warm weather and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Here are some tips on how to wear a colorful polo shirt to a yacht rock party.

First of all, choose a bright, eye-catching color, such as coral, mint green, or sky blue. This will help you stand out in the crowd and give you that nautical feel. Combined with a pair of khaki pants or white shorts, you'll look perfectly ready for a day out on the water.

Another great way to wear a colorful polo shirt to a yacht rock party is to pair it with a striped blazer or a navy blue jacket. This will give you a classic nautical look and make you feel like a true sailor. It also elevates the polo shirt from casual to dressier for a party setting.

If you want to keep the look more casual, consider pairing your polo shirt with a pair of colorful shorts. This will give you a laid-back, beachy vibe that's perfect for a day at sea. You can also wear boat shoes or slip-on sneakers for a comfortable and stylish look.

Accessories are important when dressing for a yacht rock party, and you can't go wrong with a pair of aviator sunglasses or a straw hat. These items not only complete the nautical look but also protect you from the sun during a yacht party. You can also wear a wristwatch or a leather bracelet to add a touch of sophistication to your outfit.

Overall, a colorful polo shirt is a perfect item to wear to a yacht rock party. Its versatility, ease-of-wear, and bright colors make it a great choice for a day spent on the water. With the right pair of shoes and accessories, you'll be the envy of all the other party-goers. So, embrace the nautical style, and have a great time!

Stylish Outfits: Pairing Navy Pants for Women

There's nothing quite like a yacht rock party to channel your inner sailor vibes, and when it comes to choosing the perfect outfit, a sailboat print dress is the way to go. This whimsical dress is playful, fun, and perfect for a nautical-themed party.

When choosing a sailboat print dress, you want to look for a style that is lightweight and flowy, allowing you to feel comfortable and move freely as you dance the night away. A dress with a fitted waist and flowy skirt is not only flattering but also perfect for capturing that classic yacht rock style.

When it comes to accessories, the key is to keep it simple. A pair of white or neutral-colored sandals will not only complete your outfit but also add to the nautical theme. You can also consider wearing a straw hat or a pair of oversized sunglasses for that extra touch of glamour.

You can also experiment with different dress lengths, from midi to mini, and styles, from off-the-shoulder to wrap dresses. The goal is to find a dress that makes you feel confident and stylish while embracing the nautical theme of the party.

Overall, a sailboat print dress is the perfect choice for a yacht rock party. It's stylish, comfortable, and captures the essence of sailing and good vibes on the water. So choose one that you love, accessorize with a few chic pieces, and get ready to rock the boat.

70s Outfit #1: Casual Flares & Jeans

The heyday for blue jeans was the 70s. Everyone was wearing them almost all the time. At home, with friends, to the office- blue jeans were comfortable and no one wanted to take them off. What makes 70s blue jeans unique was their high and tight waist and wide leg that flared either a little or a lot. Bell bottoms are the most famous, but straight leg or flared leg pants were more common.

Jeans were paired with simple tops. Snug knit tops or polo shirts with large collars in stripes or solid bright colors. The loose peasant top or smock top with embroidery, crochet trim, inset lace and neck ties became trendy in the late 1970s. Soft ringer t-shirts with groovy slogans and retro destinations are popular 70s shirts now. So are rainbow-striped long and short sleeve shirts, crop tops and large collar polo shirts. Knitwear was in style in the 70s and blended perfectly with the colorful pants.

70s Outfit #3: Casual Summer Days

When days are warm and jeans are too hot, a pair of high waisted shorts are your next best option. High waisted denim shorts or the classic knit shorts with or without pockets were the fashion in the early to mid 70s.  Pair them with a striped tank top or ringer tee, polo shirt or crop top for a summertime retro style. Consider, too, the zip up romper for all in one ease.

1978 denim shorts and striped tops

For a summer outfit choose 1. High waisted shorts or a terry cloth skirt or skort 2. Optional belt – white, natural, or rainbow stripes 3. Striped or crochet sleeveless top, polo shirt or crop top (or make it a one-piece with a romper ) 4. Wedge sandals or Birkenstocks

One funky trend was to crochet shorts and tops into granny inspired outfits.

1970s crochet short pattern 70s clothes

Rompers made a similar summer outfit. They cane be flashy for the disco, sporty or casual. They were often made of a poly knit that hugged the body. My mom’s was a purple paisley print with matching belt. The hot pant legs were very short!

Denim rompers or shortalls (shorts overalls) were also very trendy. Paired with western boots, you have another trendy 70s outfit.

70s Outfit #4: Wrap Dresses

Diane Von Furstenberg is credited for creating one of the most iconic dresses of the 70s, the wrap dress. Worn by stars and socialites, it never caught one with the mainstream public at the time, but has since been revived again and again. It is back in style this year, making it a great 70s retro-modern outfit to wear now.

Diane Von Furstenberg’s Wrap Dress

70s wrap dresses were made of a light jersey that clung to the body with a thin tie belt that barely held it in place. They were especially popular as disco dresses. Some mainstream styles were button-down shirt dresses with collars. They could be long maxi dresses, but most were knee-length. Simple, casual, feminine and very pretty.

The more common dress was a tie waist dress. Slipover dresses were tightened at the waist with a tie belt or had a drawstring waist that tied in the front.  Simple, easy, flowy and casual to wear it, could be dressy enough for a party or as everyday fashion.

70s Outfit #5: Peasant / Prairie Dress

The other iconic 70s dress was the long maxi dress, which gave a nod back to the turn of the century Edwardian style with lace trim ruffled hems, puffy sleeves, and an empire waistband. They could be simple or fussy, with prints or pastels. The current boho trend favors maxi dresses in ethnic prints or clean white embroidered summer dresses .

The tiered dress gives a nod to the peasant or prairie fashion trend in the late 1970s. This gave way to mixing in western themes heading into the 80s.

For your maxi dress outfit keep it simple. 1. A long peasant dress in a floral print 2. Strappy sandal heels for summer, tall lace-up boots for winter   3. a floppy hat, suede vest and western boots for a boho hippie vibe.

Under long dresses, 70s heels were hardly visible but with short dresses, they were meant to be seen. 70s heels could have a chunky square heel with a modest rise or a taller evening heel height. Most shoes were inspired by vintage styles of the 30s to 40s. Two-tone Mary Jane heels from the 20s, thin T strap heels from the 30s, and peep toe heels from the 40s were revived into new 70s designs. Shop vintage style heels shoes or all 70s shoes here .

Caftan Dress

Another long, loose and casual 70s dress was the caftan (kaftan) or mumu dress. Its nightgown shape made in bold prints and silky material made them a cross over between day and night. They were popular gowns to host a house party in. They were also worn around the house, just for fun. The oversized dramatic sleeves make them really fun to wear to a 70s party.

Mini Dresses

An alternative to long dresses were short early 70s dresses in the mini shift or tunic style. Many were still in the 60s mod style with contrasting white trim and collars. Big white necktie bows were also in style.

Other dresses were more of a hippie or boho look with tribal prints, smocking, embroidery or crochet. Jumper dresses layered over a blouse were essential in fall. Denim dresses in all lengths were also big in the mid-70s.

70s Outfit #6: Disco Jumpsuits and Dresses

When the day was done women and men headed to the Disco for a night of dancing, socializing and showing off your best clothing. Disco clothing ranged from jeans and shirts (often white or sequin) to satin wrap dresses to everyone’s favorite – the jumpsuit.

Jumpsuits are attached tops and bottoms usually in the same fabric. 70s jumpsuits were wide-legged or bell-shaped with solid pastel colors or big prints. Most were sleeveless with a halter top or other arm and back revealing design. Being flashy was the name of the game on the Disco floor.  Most 70s Halloween costumes are inspired by Disco fashion.

Besides jumpsuits, women wore shiny dresses to the disco. Silver sequins on short dresses looked like mirror disco balls while metallic gold lame mid-length dresses dazzled under the lights. Most disco dance dresses were white, red, pink or blue.

The 1920s fringe flapper dress experienced a revival at the disco too but it was the all-new wrap style dress in soft draping satin that had women dancing all night.

For formal evening events, a long gown was preferred over a shorter dress (cocktail parties had both). Floor-length column dresses draped like that of a Grecian goddess. Large capes and jackets came with many dresses that were sleeveless.

White, ivory and pastel colors dominated evening looks for most women, but movie stars and musicians had a different wardrobe.  Designer Halston and others put women in the spotlight in sequin-covered dresses, velvet kimono sleeve gowns, and slinky halter top dancing dresses.  Jumpsuits too were a popular evening look.

70s Outfit #9: 70s Yacht Rock

There is a new-ish trend for 70s themed parties taking place on boats, yachts, and cruises. Yacht Rock is a soft rock/lounge music genre. A Yacht Rock party turns to a few different clothing styles, depending if its a daytime or evening party.

For daywear, anything nautical or sailor themed (red or white stripes, blue and white dresses, all white, etc.) is fair game. White pants and a striped shirt is clean. High waisted sailor shorts and a red crop top adds a touch of fun. A white jumpsuit and a red hair scarf keep the 70s flair while red or blue striped sundresses keep it modest. A navy blue blazer, white bow blouse, and jeans is good for something more dressed up.  Even a tropical-themed dress or Hawaiian shirt will be adequately yachty.

Add a captain hat or sun visor and big oversized sunglasses . For shoes, keep it simple in flat canvas sneakers or slip on shoes (like Keds Champion ). Wedge espadrille sandals also say “summer party time!” Find more nautical themed dresses, tops and bottoms here .

For evenings, its glam time. Think disco dresses, sequin jumpsuits or rompers , and evening formals with booties (more stable for a moving boat) or high heels . Add a faux fur jacket or long coat , big dangling earrings , and a clutch handbag to complete the look.

70s Outfit #10: Workout Clothes

In the mid-1970s, exercise became a trend. Women and men were taking up tennis, running, aerobic dance, and basketball in record numbers. Specialty athletic clothes such as tracksuits, running shorts and sneakers were made nearly identical for women and men. Most sported 3 stripes or chevron on the legs, arms, and chest.

Running shorts had a side slit and were trimmed in contacting fabric. For women, taking dance classes in tights and leotards or working out on a home gym in terry cloth exercise clothes was both a fun and fashionable activity.

What to Wear to Yacht Rock Concert?

Author Edith Carli

Posted Dec 4, 2022

Library with lights

When it comes to dressing for a yacht rock concert, you have one main goal: look cool and stay comfy. The great thing about the yacht rock aesthetic is that there are so many options that fit this standard! To really get in the nautical mood, try incorporating pieces like boat shoes, blue and white stripes, plaids, and denim into your look. Cargo shorts or navy trousers can be paired with an embroidered golf polo shirt for a classic vibe. Accessorize with some aviator sunglasses or a captain’s hat if you’re feeling extra inspired! A structured blazer in different shades of blue can bring your outfit up another notch while still keeping it stylishly simple – perfect for lounging on deck with friends during summer evenings. When temperatures drop as the night progresses, sweep away toasty in a wide-cut crewneck pullover or cozy up in your favorite slouchy cardigan. Completing this look will take sailing tickets by storm!

What type of clothing should I wear to a yacht rock show?

What type of outfit is appropriate for an event with a yacht rock theme, what should i wear to be appropriately dressed for a yacht rock concert.

If you’re planning to attend a yacht rock show, then it's important to choose your outfit carefully. The music and the mood of these shows have a vintage throwback feel so while the dress code can be quite general, it's best to look out for something that won't look out of place.

The best way to start when picking out an outfit is by thinking nautical – but it doesn't have to mean full-on sailor attire! There is enough scope to give off subtle marine vibes with cropped jeans paired with with striped shirts or crew neck sweaters; for ladies you can opt for fun wrap dresses in cotton or linen with wedges or sandals.

You should definitely avoid wearing anything too casual like sneakers or denim shorts - instead, pick comfy shoes that go well with your chosen outfit such as loafers or espadrilles. Accessorize further by throwing on some aviator sunglasses and a captain hat if you're going all nautical! Finish off the look by adding seaside jewellery like shell necklaces and starfish earrings - this will definitely give your fit extra charm.

Take into account that most venue guidelines don't permit high heels and flip flops, so opt for something that still looks fashionable but also complies with their rules. Finally, remember not everything needs matching – mix and match different fabrics together in neutral colours like beige, navy blue and white which will match perfectly well even if they don't come from the same brand or collection!

Going to an event with a yacht rock theme means taking a stroll down memory lane and rocking out to some classic hits from the genre. When it comes to picking out what to wear, there are a few options that can work. Start by looking through your closet and see if you already have some items that fit the bill. If not, you will want to look for vintage thrift and second-hand stores for key pieces or shop online at sites like Etsy.

To get started, start with simple staples like tight-fitting jeans or trousers paired with a solid colored polo shirt, t-shirt, or tank top in pastel colors like powder blue and peach. You could also add an optional suspenders look by adding suspender clips onto your pants - it gives off the perfect yacht rock style!

The next important piece is footwear! Go for boat shoes in tan browns or classic sandals - both would work great with your outfit! For accessories that hint at summer days on the shoreline add aviator sunglasses, colorful beads around your neck (think Rum Runner style), rings of gold (for homages to Captain Sullenberger), bright anchor belts and sailor hats if desired. All these items complete this cool vintage look when attending an event centered around boat tunes from the '70s and '80s! Enjoy cruising on this musical voyage back in time...

Heading out for a yacht rock concert? That sounds like you’re in for a night of non-stop music and great vibes ! Whether you’re in the mood to dress up or keep it casual, there are plenty of options when it comes to finding the right concert look.

When dressing for this kind of gig, aim to keep your style preppy and pulled together while still allowing you to move around and have fun. To help give yourself a polished look without losing comfort, start with basics like white chinos or gingham shorts when building your outfit. Top those off with an oxford shirt or patterned polo – either is sure to add touches of boat-y goodness that go along perfectly with the music. Feel free to finish off with some boat shoes or loafers if padding across the dance floor is on your agenda!

A lightweight summer blazer can be just what you need if stepping ashore doesn’t involve getting too hot – they always come through looking sharp while also providing necessary coverage on windy nights out at sea. Meanwhile knit sweaters are also an ideal pick that bring warm layers should they be required while keeping things comfortable throughout the night thanks to their breathable material.

For accessories think cute bandanas in navy blues and lifebuoy reds as well as lighthouse printed hats which both ooze seaside charm; these picks spice up any look but will still let everyone know what genre inspired them!

To top off your yacht rock look handkerchiefs spotted from navy anchors might been fitting but don’t forget other prints such as palm trees, stars and subliminal nautical motifs all work together perfectly too - these fabrics showcase all those amazing elements of throwback summer chic so really make sure those details shine through when considering allying choices for extra sartorial points !

Are there any specific fashion rules when attending a yacht rock event?

If you're thinking of attending a yacht rock event, it's important to put some thought into your outfit. Yacht rock is an homage to the music and fashion of the late 70s and 80s, which means bright colors and classic looks take center stage. Here are a few ways you can have your wardrobe reflect the spirit of the genre:

1. Stick to lightweight fabrics – Soft linens, eyelet cottons or breezy seersuckers evoke a laidback island aesthetic that goes well with breezy yacht rock tunes. For bonus points, look for subtle tropical-inspired prints like palms or sailboats for some subtlety patriotic flair!

2. Keep it Classic– While experimenting with bold silhouettes is never out of bounds at yachting events, opting for timeless silhouettes like boat necklines paired with light khakis will add an air of sophistication to any look.

3. Wear bright colors – To really fit in with the vibe of a yacht rock party opt for the classic pastel shades such as coral pink and baby blue; they’ll make you stand out without going overboard (no pun intended).

4. Accessorize! – Complete your ensemble by adding nautical-inspired items such as brightly patterned scarves, sailor hats or statement jewelry—all elements associated with yacht rock music culture that will instantly elevate your look

Overall keep in mind that dressing up should be fun so feel free to experiment and have fun finding pieces that work together! Remember serviceable style is key—you don't need super expensive items but if everything comes together nicely you'll still come off looking sharp on deck!

Is there a dress code for attending a yacht rock gig?

Going to a yacht rock gig is a great way to experience a unique musical style, but it's important to make sure you are dressed appropriately for the occasion. The good news is, there really isn't a strict dress code for most yacht rock gigs . Whether you choose to go casual or opt for something dressier, your outfit will reflect the laid-back atmosphere at these gigs.

For starters, if you're worried about what clothes to wear, pick out something comfortable that allows you to sing along and boogie down when necessary. This might be an old concert t-shirt and worn-in jeans or shorts - whatever works best for your body type and personal style. Women can get away with wearing cute prints on flowing skirts and maxi dresses while men may want incorporate some breezy shorts into their look. Whatever look you decide upon, know that fashion choices will vary from person-to-person depending on their own personal taste!

Additionally, footwear is also very important at yacht rock shows – think comfortable sneakers as opposed to high heels or other hard soled shoes such as loafers – though feel free to wear flip flops if that’s what makes most sense considering the airy nature of this music genre! Ultimately remember: upscale dresses certainly work well but focus should be placed on finding an outfit that lets your dance moves shine! Afterall - this isn't football season where uniforms are mandatory ;)

At the end of the day there’s no wrong or right choice when it comes dressing for a yacht rock gig so don’t stress too much about your attire - because looking stylish doesn’t have beat enjoying yourself with other passionate fans in true smooth sailing fashion !

What should I avoid wearing to a yacht rock show?

If you’re planning to attend a yacht rock show, then getting dressed for the occasion should be taken just as seriously as the music. While these shows often have a dress code that demands respectability , there are some items of clothing that should never be worn no matter what.

First and foremost is any kind of athletic or sports attire such as sweatpants, football or basketball jerseys and the like. Not only does this type of attire distract from everyone in their glammed out party clothes but it detracts from the entire atmosphere. Keep it classy and casual - wear something more suitable like clean jeans, chinos or slacks with a shirt or button-down for guys and for women - opt for sun dresses, maxi skirts/dresses, jumpsuits or blouses with trousers if desired. Bright colors can really make your outfit stand out but stay away from anything overly revealing!

Secondly – avoid donning heavy jackets unless you know there’s an outdoor section at this yacht rock show where you plan to socialize outside in the evening coolness (unlikely). Not only will such jacket encumber your movements on board the ship but they can be downright annoying when there are already too many people dancing to uninterested bodies jostling up against one another in order to get pasted into cramped corners on board!

And lastly – whatever accessories become part of your ensemble no matter how small – give thought to wearing them on purpose rather than by accident! Wearing jewelry sets associated with gangs is not recommended so its best people leave those medallions and oversized rings at home (or better yet back in their cases!). It also goes without saying - choose footwear that has good grip on slippery surfaces: No flip flops allowed!!

😎By avoiding uncomfortable clothing situations at yacht rock shows, not only do we remain respectful of other attendees who come to dance but it also allows us all have an unforgettable time.

Karaoke is a blast for parties or gatherings! Pick from various songs and genres to sing your heart out. Enhance the experience with stage lighting, costumes and props. Buy or rent a karaoke machine, or get apps to have your own karaoke night at home. Not just solo performances – friends can join in for duets or group numbers.

One unique thing about karaoke is that it’s fun and doesn’t require any musical training . It’s a great way to express yourself, build confidence, and make enjoyable memories with others. To up the ante, try wearing costumes or using props related to the song you’re singing!

  • Customize with backdrops, props and print designs.
  • Integrate with social media to share pics easily.
  • Fun for all ages.
  • Some even offer unique experiences like slow-mo videos or animated GIFs.
  • Create a themed photo booth for added fun.

At my cousin’s wedding, I was surprised at how much cheer the photo booth brought. Trying out the props and making funny poses was great! But my favorite moment was when all my cousins huddled up for a big group picture – made possible only because of the photo booth!

Games and Activities

Searching for something to keep your guests entertained? Here are some cool Games and Activities that can add fun to your event!

  • A photo booth with props and backgrounds for guests to take pictures.
  • A themed quiz or trivia game based on current events, pop culture, etc.
  • Relay races or obstacle courses for teamwork and communication.
  • DIY craft station where guests can make personalised mugs, jewelry, etc.

Yacht Rock Party Checklist

To throw an unforgettable yacht rock party, you need to have a comprehensive checklist in place. This guide will help you with the necessary preparations for a successful event in this section, ‘Yacht Rock Party Checklist’ with ‘Audio Equipment, Lighting, Tableware and Utensils, and Personal Items’ as sub-sections.

Audio Equipment

For that yacht rock party of a lifetime, quality audio equipment is a must. Here’s what you need for crisp sound:

  • Outdoor speakers
  • An amplifier/receiver
  • A streaming device

Don’t forget the extensions cords and surge protectors , so all your gear stays powered up.

Good audio is only half the battle – lighting is essential to get that ‘yacht rock’ feel.

So start planning a night to remember with friends and family. Get the best audio equipment for your yacht rock party now!

Lighting for your yacht rock party? Endless options! Bright whites and cool blues will make your guests feel breezy. Accent lighting creates a mood and keeps guests engaged. Add some unique touch with Edison bulbs or colourful paper lanterns . Spotlights to highlight beautiful features of the yacht. Don’t forget lighting for safe navigation after the sun sets.

A friend once had a yacht rock party with warm-coloured light fixtures . Cozy ambiance with purple and pink lights plus porthole windows with natural moonlight – magical evening! Plastic champagne glasses too – nothing says ‘yacht rock’ like pretending to be fancy.

Tableware and Utensils

When it comes to hosting a yacht rock party, tableware is just as important as the music and decorations. You want your guests to be transported to the era of smooth sailing. So, opt for classic white porcelain plates and gold flatware . This elegant combo will give your table a touch of sophistication, while still staying true to the theme. Don’t forget the wine glasses and champagne flutes – yachts need bubbly!

Add nautical elements like blue and white striped napkins or sailor knot coasters . For an extra special touch, incorporate seashells or miniature sailboats as table decor . Pro Tip: Use soft lighting like votive candles or string lights to set the relaxing ambiance of a luxurious yacht party. Don’t forget your captain’s hat – you gotta look the part!

Personal Items

Heading out to the sea? Here’s a list of must-haves for your yacht party: Sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, swimsuits, towels, a camera, an extra set of clothes, a power bank, and insect repellent . Remember: pack only necessary items!

I once made the mistake of forgetting sunscreen and ended up with a nasty sunburn! Learn from my mistake and enjoy a memorable time on board. And when you’re done, simply throw all the empty bottles and cheese plates into the ocean – the sharks will take care of the rest!

Cleanup and Post-Party

To clean up after your yacht rock party with ease, the essential guide has got you covered. In this section, you’ll learn about disposing of trash, returning rentals, and sending thank you notes – all simple yet crucial tasks to complete after a party. Stick around to make sure your post-party is stress-free.

Disposing of Trash

Split your trash into recyclable and non-recyclable before throwing it away.

Compost leftovers and organic waste to cut down on landfill rubbish.

Always use strong, un-tearable bags for garbage.

Donate usable items instead of discarding them.

Don’t forget! Poor disposal of trash can be a health hazard and environment hazard.

Also, weigh the bags before throwing them out. Some local governments have fee structures based on weight.

For big events or parties, plan ahead for trash removal to avoid last-minute stress.

Plus, returning rentals is much easier than returning a bad haircut – just make sure to vacuum up the glitter!

Returning Rentals

It’s critical to follow protocol when returning rentals. Check for any damages or missing items before you give them back. Here are some points to keep in mind:

  • Inspect rentals for damage or missing items.
  • Return all items in the same condition you got them.
  • Go back to the original spot or designated drop-off point.
  • Use a rental transport service if needed.
  • Stick to the guidelines and deadlines in your rental agreement.

Trouble can arise if you don’t return rentals properly. So, be sure to follow all steps and procedures.

Pro Tip: Snap photos of the rentals before returning them. This can help if any disputes arise. Plus, send a thank you note – it’s polite and might help cover up any puke stains in the plant pot.

Sending Thank You Notes.

Show courtesy and respect by thanking your guests after a party. In today’s digital world, a handwritten thank you note can make someone’s day. Here’s how to write the perfect one:

Writing thank you notes takes time and effort, but it’s always worth it. Use high-quality paper and pen to express your personality. If someone did something extra special, send them an extra-special thank you note with a token of appreciation.

Pro Tip: Hand-deliver your thank you notes to make your guests feel even more appreciated.

What to Wear to a Yacht Party – Your Dress Code Guide!

yacht rock theme outfit

Dressing for a boat party is different than any other kind of event. While you have good times, you need to look great and most importantly, feel comfortable in your clothing. Also, you need to take some safety precautions into consideration as boats have unpredictable movements. After all, you want to have an exceptional time! Most yacht events take place in the summer, so you need to dress accordingly to the weather. What will be your event about? A Day party? A night party? In this article, you will find out exactly what to wear to a yacht party.

Table of Contents

Most parties are held during the day. You will probably spend most of your time enjoying dancing on the deck with a cocktail in your hand or swimming in the water, so you need an attire comfortable to wear and easy to pull on/off!

  • Choose a swimsuit or a bikini to wear under your clothes. Make sure to pick a color that suits your attire.
  • A flowy dress, short skirt, airy beach pants, or a short over your swimsuit will be perfect for this kind of party. You can also match them with a summary layer or a loose blouse.
  • As for the shoes, flat sandals with soft soles will get you out of trouble. High heels are an absolute no-no as they are not safe on a boat and can scratch the deck.

Accessories

  • You should be wearing sunglasses during the day, but not just any, you need polarized sunglasses to protect 100% your eyes from the UV rays of the sun
  • Try to store your stuff like sunglasses, makeup, and hair clips in a waterproof handbag. It could be useful if it gets wet!
  • Makeup Use only waterproof makeup during the day
  • Opt for a tight swimsuit if you plan to wear it under your cloth. Otherwise, there are stylish good looking swimwears that look more like dress shorts, which you can match with loose shirts and a light jacket
  • The most appropriate clothes for men are loose pants, boating shorts , and jean shorts assorted with light shirts, or polo and a loose vest.
  • Avoid flip-flops and opt for nonmarking boating shoes , like Sperry. These come in a wide variety of styles to choose from and will match any outfit. With these shoes, you can walk in complete tranquility without worrying about hurting your feet or slipping on the wet deck.
  • Opt only for a waterproof watch if you intend to wear one. You don’t want to bother taking it off, and on each time you go for a swim.
  • As mentioned for women above, the same concept applies to men. A good pair of polarized sunglasses is a must!

Night Party

In the evening, you can still wear casual clothes but a bit more dressy. The thin, soft, and flowy textile is more appropriate for night parties. Bring a light jacket with you. It gets cooler in the evening.

  • Princess waist dresses, skirt with flounces, loose pants assorted with dressy tops are the perfect choices. A chic option will be to wear a color-coordinated wrap or a jacket. A long dress harmonized with a nice pair of chandelier earrings is a great option if you opt to dress chicly
  • Here, again, avoid high heels. Flats and low-heeled sandals will be perfect and will suit any outfit.
  • Men should wear comfortable pants with a dress shirt or even a polo, and a light jacket on top.
  • I will say it again, the best shoes to wear on a boat is Sperry, but hey, this is your party, you can pick any other type of boat shoes as long as they are non-marking.
  • Girls, even if high heels elongate your legs and make you more attractive. It is preferable to avoid wearing them on a boat. Opt for boating shoes !
  • Mosquitoes love humidity, especially in the late afternoon. You should bring a repellent with you. You Never know.
  • Try to use only waterproof accessories
  • The sun beat down during the day, bring sunscreen and wear long sleeves to protect you from the sun
  • You can wear long dresses but not too long to avoid tripping.
  • If you are unsure about the type of party, ask the person that organizes the event on the yacht what is and not appropriate.
  • It’s easy to get dehydrated on a yacht because you don’t feel the sun as you are most of the time in the water or on the deck and at sea, there are always winds. PS, wear a hat and drink a lot of water!

Final Words!

Now that you know how to dress for a day and night party on a yacht, all you need to do is have a good time!

8 thoughts on “What to Wear to a Yacht Party – Your Dress Code Guide!”

I have a yacht party to go to and I really needed this guide to make sure that I will take whatever I need. It is really easy to forget a few things and later regret once you reach the party. However, in the evening yacht parties, is it okay to wear heels?

Oh, that’s great, I am sure you’ll have fun!

Yes, I agree with you, it is easy to forget things. This is why it is important to write down what you need before you go:) Once you are on the boat, you cannot go back unless you live nearby.

You cannot wear high heels on a boat, there are few reasons to this. It is not comfortable, not safety and it can damage the deck:) You wouldn’t want this happen.

Thank you for the comment and wish you to have unforgettable moments on the yacht party!

Have a wonderful day!

Hi Daniella, I really like that you divided your article into parts like what to wear in the day or in night! And that you pay attention to both men and women is great, too! often, there are only guides for women. Keep going on as active as you are! Your website is catchy!

Thank you for the kind comment, I really appreciate:) Whats women without men and whats men without women? We can’t live without each other:), Have a wonderful day!

I have been on a yacht for a dinner party sailing in heels! It was a bit troublesome especially going up and down stairs.

Is this post geared toward Northeast US or somewhere else in the world? Here in Florida, it is absolutely okay to wear flip flops to a day yacht party as long as they aren’t cheap! Sperry’s or other boat shoes are acceptable at night for men if the rest of the outfit is semi-casual.

Thank you for the comment:)

Yes, this article concerns everyone. No matter the country. Of course, you can wear flip flops , you can even go barefoot if you wish to, but the risk of hurting your feet or slipping on the deck is much higher. Most charter companies require wearing boat shoes because if something happens and someone didn’t follow the guideline, then the company or the owner of the boat will not be covered by their assurance.

However, Sperry’ shoes are the most recommended on boats as they are comfortable and stylish.

But, again, as long as it is non-marking shoes, you are good to go!

I like how you said that the most appropriate clothes for men are loose pants. My wife and I are planning to go on a trip and we have no idea what to wear. I will definitely share this article with my wife to give her ideas of what to wear in case we go to a boat party.

Hi Dereck, This would be a great idea! I am sure your wife will find something nice to wear:) Thank you for the comment and wish you a lovely day!

Things to Consider when Dressing the Old Money Aesthetic Look

Before we bid you farewell, we want to leave you with a few golden nuggets of wisdom.

Keep these points in mind, and the old money aesthetic will be yours to command!

Quality Over Quantity

You see, less is more in the world of old money style. It’s not about owning a closet full of clothes; it’s about carefully curated pieces that stand the test of time.

Quality over quantity for old money style

Each item should be a testament to excellent craftsmanship and enduring style.

Forget fast fashion; you should be investing in the classics that will still look stylish in a decade – or even two.

Neutral Colors

When dressing old money, embrace a palette of neutrals .

Wear neutral colors for the old money aesthetic

Think shades of navy, gray, beige, white, and black. Muted colors not only exude a sense of timeless elegance but also give us the flexibility to mix and match with ease.

Remember, we’re not aiming for flashy but an effortlessly sophisticated look.

Brands That Scream Old Money Style

Look for brands with a rich heritage and a proven track record of quality.

Old money style brands

With their iconic suits and Oxford shirts, Brooks Brothers have been a staple in the old money wardrobe for the wealthy man. For generations.

Ralph Lauren, known for their classic Polo shirts and preppy vibe, is another go-to choice.

Other brands like Barbour, Burberry, and J.Press encapsulate this timeless aesthetic.

By investing in these brands, you’re not just buying clothes; but buying into a tradition of elegance.

It’s Obvious, But a Proper Fit is a MUST

We cannot stress this enough – the fit is EVERYTHING .

Well-fitted clothes on men

No matter how expensive or high-quality your clothes are, the entire look falls flat if they don’t fit well.

So, let’s commit to those extra steps to ensure our clothes fit just right, whether finding a reliable tailor or spending a little more time in the fitting room.

Remember, when it comes to old money style, you’re dressing to impress, not just to cover up.

72 Fun & Unusual Things to Do in Moscow

fun things to do in Moscow

Sure, Moscow is the Russian political capital and the nation’s most populous city, but describing it as such couldn’t be any further from the truth. More accurately, Moscow is a city of contrasts.

It exudes history — its Kremlin dates back centuries, nodding to royalty and leadership old and now, while the famed Red Square, the poster child of the city, blends striking color with ancient tradition and religion.

On the other hand, it’s a city of modern pop culture and towering skyscrapers; a place where you’ll come across new-age museums, arts centers, manmade parks, and an efficient transportation system that’s one of the most beautiful in Europe.

It’s a city of longstanding culture — the Bolshoi Theater is an international symbol for excellence in classical dance, while Russia’s National Ballet Company remains renowned worldwide — as well as upbeat nightlife, with some of the world’s most celebrated rooftop bars and nightclubs.

While it’s a city filled with opposites, there remains no shortage of things to do in Moscow for all types of travelers — from those who want cultural immersion to those looking for an epic night out, you’ll be spoiled for choice. And if you’re not sure where to start, here’s a list of suggestions!

The Moscow Kremlin

If there’s any particular district begging to be the first place you visit on your trip, it’s the Kremlin.

Built in the 16th century by Ivan the Terrible, the UNESCO-listed area has since become the heart of Russia’s capital city, where you’ll find several churches, palaces, and other noteworthy buildings.

We’ll dive into each of its main attractions in a second, but regardless of what you visit, try to make it to the Kremlin in time for sunset — because seeing its golden domes glinting in the late-afternoon light makes for one spectacular tourist photo!

1 – Admire the abundance of Kremlin towers | the Kremlin

Kremlin towers, Moscow

As your eyes dart down the towering red-brick Kremlin wall, the first thing you’ll notice is its large towers of all different styles and sizes.

With a whopping 20 separate minarets towering above the historic area, each with its own name, colors, features and history, a guided tour to learn each of their fascinating stories is a must.

To give you a little taste, the Konstantin-Yeleninskaya Tower once housed a torture chamber. Saviour’s Tower at the main entrance boasts a famous chiming clock, the Secret Tower houses a secret escape tunnel, and the Trinity Tower is the tallest of them all.

2 – Visit the enormous Grand Kremlin Palace | the Kremlin

Grand Kremlin Palace, Moscow

A remarkable attraction in terms of both beauty and history, the Grand Kremlin Palace is an ornate rococo-style building that was commissioned during the reign of Nicholas I, and today acts as the official residence of none other than the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.

Perched atop Borovitsky Hill, its 125-meter-long facade is unmissable, making for impressive photos.

Take note: guided tours are few and far between, so you’ll have to book a few weeks in advance if you want to check out the decorated inner sanctum.

3 – People-watch in Cathedral Square | the Kremlin

Cathedral Square, Moscow

One of the most popular areas in all of Moscow (sometimes called Sobornaya Square), with multiple massive churches at its heart, Cathedral Square is flanked by several historic buildings and is never shy of a tourist crowd.

The three main churches — each spectacular works of architecture in their own right — are the Cathedral of the Assumption (the oldest and the biggest of all Kremlin churches), the 16th-century Cathedral of the Archangel Michael (known for its beautiful Corinthian gables and turrets), and the golden-domed Cathedral of the Annunciation (which connects to the Grand Kremlin Palace’s main building).

Throw in the 60-meter-high Ivan the Great Bell Tower, the lesser-known Church of the Twelve Apostles , the Church of the Deposition of the Virgin’s Robe (underrated yet famous for its marvelous stained-glass windows), and the medieval residence-turned-museum that is The Patriarch’s Palace, and you can see why this square is regularly number one on any visitor’s list of things to do in Moscow.

4 – See a show at the State Kremlin Palace | the Kremlin

State Kremlin Palace, Moscow

Just like the Grand Kremlin Palace , this theater and prestigious concert hall — with its grandiose facade and multiple sculptures — is another ornate building that’s worth admiring.

A popular place to hold conferences, the State Kremlin Palace was originally built as part of a larger complex for Communist Party meetings, but today hosts some of the biggest events in Moscow — we’re talkin’ sold-old ballet performances, world-famous concerts, opera shows, and festivals.

Check the website to see what’s on the calendar for your visit!

5 – See centuries worth of national treasures at the Armoury Chamber | the Kremlin

Armoury Chamber, Moscow

For anyone with an interest in historical weaponry and armor, this museum — which dates back to the early 1500s when it was created as the royal armory — is a must-see.

The Armoury Chamber (as well as the Diamond Fund Exhibition) is home to some of the most valuable objects that were originally owned by Russian monarchs — from jeweled heirlooms and intricate boxes to ornately decorated pistols and swords — many of which are centuries old.

Within the armoury chamber, you’ll also find the Russian historical regalia, a collection of artifacts that belonged to Russian tsars and emperors between the 13th and 20th centuries, highlighted by the Ivory Throne and the Monomakh’s Cap.

6 – Step inside the Palace of the Facets | the Kremlin

Palace of the Facets, Moscow

The Palace of the Facets is one of the most underrated buildings in all of Moscow, largely because it’s not as widely promoted or photographed even though its exterior adorns some postcards.

From the outside, it blends in with the crowd. But step inside and you’ll discover a world of beauty and wonder — its frescoes, golden columns and enormous rooms are a sight to behold

The Palace of the Facets is not only a piece of art (literally, with painted walls), dating back over 500 years, but also acted as the dining hall for the Tsars.

7 – Feel small next to the Tsar Bell | the Kremlin

Tsar Bell, Moscow

Making Philadelphia’s famous Liberty Bell look diminutive in size, this monument , which never actually functioned as a bell due to its immense size (at 205 tons and standing 20.1 feet high!), has found fame in recent years for being the heaviest attraction inside The Kremlin.

With the bronze landmark’s claim to fame of being the biggest bell in the world, it presents as a great, quick photo op when roaming through the Kremlin.

8 – Check out the Senate Palace | the Kremlin

Senate Palace, Moscow

Another architectural masterpiece that’s tucked away within the Kremlin, this palace is famous for being one of Moscow’s most beautiful buildings — its yellow façade curves around to face inward and truly engulf anyone who stands near it.

Built back in the late 1700s, today it houses the Russian presidential administration and, unfortunately for us, is off limits to the general public.

Still, admiring it from outside, with the nearby Tsar Cannon, is certainly good enough.

9 – Grab a photo in front of the Tsar Cannon | the Kremlin

Tsar Cannon, Moscow

One of Moscow’s most iconic symbols, Tsar Cannon (or Royal Cannon) is a cannon that was manufactured in 1586 and resides — yep, you guessed it — within The Kremlin.

Following the theme of the enormous Tsar Bell, it weighs a whopping 39 tons — making it one of the world’s largest cannons even though it has never been shot.

And while its size may be impressive on its own, what makes this cannon so special is that it’s adorned with intricate carvings, ornaments, inscriptions, and a figure of a horse-riding Tsar Feodor the Bellringer.

10 – Join a tour of the Terem Palace | the Kremlin

Terem Palace, Moscow

A stunning, fairytale-like palace that’s steeped in history and detail, the five-story Terem Palace is one of the most underrated attractions within The Kremlin. However, as part of the official residence of the Russian President, much of it is off-limits to snap-happy tourists.

That said, there’s still plenty to be seen in the accessible areas by joining a group tour: a beautiful white-stone carved staircase; curved, decorated, and painted ceilings; and an enchanting low-vaulted Antechamber with lancet windows.

The Red Square

As we move away from the Kremlin, our next stop is the most photographed, picturesque public area in the country.

Flanked by gorgeous, colorful towers and buildings, the Red Square is the most famous square in all of Russia — and one that’s steeped in history, patriotism, and communist symbolism.

Home to some of Moscow’s greatest landmarks including St Basil’s Cathedral (featuring its iconic onion domes), Lenin Mausoleum, GUM department store (an architectural masterpiece that is the most famous shopping mall in Russia), The State History Museum, and more, it’s not just a sight to see in Moscow but also one that has been seen by hundreds of millions from around the world.

11 – Make your way inside St. Basil’s Cathedral | Red Square

St. Basil’s Cathedral, Moscow

Built back in the early 1500s, this quirky-looking, 65-meter-tall Orthodox church is so unique and detailed that it’s earned its place as one of 16 UNESCO cultural sites in Russia — and, thanks to many Hollywood productions like Bond: Skyfall (2012), has only continued to increase in fame.

Its exterior boasts multi-colored domes crowned with golden onion top spires. Meanwhile, inside, you’ll find nine small, separate chapels, and plenty of decorated walls and windows — all best viewed as part of a walking tour of Red Square.

12 – Visit the State Historical Museum | Red Square

State Historical Museum, Moscow

One of seven museums that can be found around the expansive Red Square, the State Historical Museum is one of Moscow’s most revered.

Housed in a neoclassical building (the same as GUM), it features more than 4 million items relating to Russian history — making it so vast and incredible that you’ll need at least two hours inside to see just a fraction.

While you’re in the area, be sure to check out the Marshal Georgy Zhukov Monument, a towering horse-riding statue of arguably the most famous and heroic Soviet military commander of WWII, which can be found in front of the museum.

13 – Shop till you drop at GUM | Red Square

GUM department store, Moscow

The official state department store of Russia, having opened in 1893 and become one of Moscow’s most iconic attractions for shopaholics over the years, is known for its gorgeous architecture that looks more like a palace than anything else.

Entering through its massive golden doors, you’ll be surprised to find an extensive shopping center with more than 100 luxury and world-renowned brands of clothing and accessories for men, women, and youngsters.

Even if you don’t plan on buying anything, stop into the Gastronom №1 for a bite to eat or take a stroll through its corridors to appreciate the building’s history and beauty.

14 – Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum | Red Square

Lenin's Mausoleum, Moscow

Another iconic Red Square attraction is Lenin’s Mausoleum, a small yet foreboding building that houses the embalmed corpse of Communist leader Vladimir Lenin (who led Russia through the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917).

Opened in 1930 after his death and standing at more than 12 meters tall, it presents as both a unique and macabre site — and, considering the life-like nature of the body, certainly isn’t for the faint of heart.

Note: Entrance is free of charge, but expect to be searched by security before being allowed in.

15 – Ride the Moscow Metro, enjoying the beautiful stations along the way

Moscow Metro, Russia

As we leave the Red Square, the next cab off the rank is Moscow’s unbelievable artistic Metro network (rivaled only in beauty by that of Stockholm). Constructed between the 1930s and 1950s, its stations were built by hand with a wide range of artistic themes — from socialist realist to Slavic pagan.

Tips: The best way to experience them is as part of a Moscow Metro tour, which can be booked online. However, if you prefer exploring solo, then make sure to visit the Mayakovskaya Metro Station which is known for its seemingly endless archways.

You may also check out Dostoyevskaya, named after a famous writer with murals depicting his stories. The Ploshchad Revolutsii Metro Station is another option where a handful of Socialist statues provide a wonderful contrast to the red marble arches.

Tsaritsyno Museum & Nature Reserve, Moscow

Boasting beautiful 18th-century baroque architecture, it was originally built as a country retreat for Catherine the Great. However, it has since been transformed into an outdoor museum with several museums inside — including exhibits dedicated to Russian history and culture.

18 – Tick off the main haunts with a hop-on hop-off bus ride

bus tours in Moscow

Short on time or just can’t be bothered walking around anymore? Then make sure to check out the double-decker Hop-on-Hop-off Bus, a convenient and cheap way of seeing all the main attractions in one go.

With unlimited-ride tickets lasting between 24 and 72 hours, there’s plenty of flexibility to soak in must-see areas like Red Square, the Kremlin, Arbatskaya Square, Theatre Square, and the Red October neighborhood — and with a free audio tour (in English) throughout the ride, you’re sure to learn a thing or two as well.

Busses usually run every 15 minutes, with the full city loop taking roughly an hour — of course, you can disembark and reboard to your heart’s content.

Plenty of cafes line the well-manicured park, likewise public art projects and picnic spots and an open-air cinema in the summertime!

While a relaxing day in the gardens is never a bad idea, if you’re looking for something a little more interactive, there’s the 18-meter-tall Observation Platform and a handful of museums on site. The Gorky Park Museum , Muzeon Park of Arts , Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and New Tretyakov Gallery are all noteworthy stops within walking distance.

23 – Stare at the ceiling of the Christ the Savior Cathedral

Christ the Savior Cathedral, Moscow

With a beautiful color-contrasting exterior that still falls short of the intricately painted inner walls and ceiling, this underrated (due to not being in Red Square with the other main cathedrals) attraction is a must for the bucket list.

24 – Zoom around town in a Soviet van

Soviet van tours in Moscow

If a hop-on-hop-off bus screams of cliche tourism, why not get a little more cultured by skirting around the city’s main haunts in a real, war-era soviet van?

Undeniably one of Russia’s most emblematic vehicles as both a symbol of a Soviet past and a comical cultural nod to its boring exterior (dubbed the “loaf of bread”), the UAZ-452 vans are iconic.

So whether you opt for a pub crawl, landmark sightseeing tour, or day of adventure with wintertime off-roading, be sure to ride shotgun in one of the loaves of bread at some stage!
