Worth the wait: First look on board Princess Yachts 29m Y95

When British builder Princess Yachts launched its Y Class and X Class models, it was unsure how the "space age" styling of the X95 would sit with their traditional customer base. However, the market was braver than expected and as a result, the brand’s “more traditional” Y95 had to take a back seat.

First announced at the 2019 Cannes Yachting Festival, hull one of the Y95 series was finally previewed to private clients ahead of her delivery to an Asian owner in Plymouth in December. The 29.1 metre yacht features exterior design by Pininfarina and Olesinski and, despite utilising the same hull structure and engineering platform as the X95, it has a dramatically different layout.

"The lower decks are pretty much the same between the two but everything from the main deck upwards changes,” says Princess marketing director Simon Clare. The Y95 features an open flybridge area, a flybridge helm and a raised pilot house. This is different to the X95, which has an enclosed flybridge and a single enclosed helm.

This revolutionary layout of the X Class, which offers impressive interior volume for a sub 30-metre yacht, piqued customer interest and had a knock-on impact on the Y Class. “We have delayed the build of this [the Y95] a little bit because the X has been so popular and they are built in the same factory on the same line,” explains Clare. “We have to balance between the X and the Y and they are two very different clients.”

The Y might be seen as the more conservative option, but the first hull’s calm and neutral interior ensures it feels suitably modern. The main deck flows through on one level, with seating areas on the port and starboard side, and a formal dining table forward. There are also opening patio doors on the starboard side, which were chosen by the owner.

Further forwards a well-thought-out galley can be found portside, which sits alongside the raised bridge area. “The galley has the same utilities as the X95 but is just a different layout in terms of usable space,” explains Jack Smith, technical sales executive at Princess Yachts. “There is never enough space, but we have tried to utilise every little area.” The owner of the first hull opted for a five-cabin layout with a full beam owner's suite on the main deck.  “The master suite on the main deck is an option on the X95 but it is standard on the Y,” says Clare. Owners who opt for the X can choose to utilise the space as a master cabin or as an open-plan country kitchen.

The master suite on board the first Y95 has a bathroom forward with light flowing into the cabin from large windows on either side. The generous area also offers a relaxed seating area and there are alternative options that could create a workspace area.

On the lower deck, a further four en-suite cabins are found, with two full beam cabins found at either end with a pair of twin cabins in between. The layout is identical to the X95 and there is plenty of flexibility for future owners looking for a different allocation of space.

“We have got different opportunities down here,” says Clare. “We’re a production boat builder but when we get to this size of boat, we can be flexible for clients. People might what to create a TV room down here or we can put a small gym in one of the cabins.” Perhaps the biggest differentiating factor between the X Class and Y Class is the flybridge, with the Y95 offering plenty of exterior space. The vast area incorporates a helm station, a large dining area that can comfortably seat ten, an L-shaped sofa as well as a twin grill, drinks fridge and a bar with stools for entertaining.  Further customisations include the option to add a spa pool and still have space for a tender or jet ski.

The flybridge area is also home to a cleverly concealed crane, to further maximise the space on offer. “It’s the first time that we have really be able to get it right on the outboard edge, it means it doesn’t take up space and it doesn’t look imposing,” says Smith.

On the lower deck aft, there are again multiple options as to how the space between the crew area and the aft deck can be divided. The owner of the first hull also chose the “hybrid” beach club area, which also incorporates a swim platform. “The transformer platform means it can go up and serve as a diving platform or go down and give you easy access to the water when it submerges,” says Clare.

Despite the “wow factor” of the X Class, Clare has faith that with the first Y95 on the water, the enduring appeal of the Y Class will continue. “A lot of people will be used to this kind of configuration with the flybridge and the two helms and it's just something that they're more comfortable with,” he says. “There's no real split between an age group or a region particularly, it's just how people are going to use our boats.”

Princess Y95 yacht tour: Access all areas of this new British superyacht

Hugo Andreae, editor of MBY, takes us inside the brand new Princess Y95 following its recent launch at the Plymouth yard...

When Princess Yachts launched the tri-deck Princess X95 back in 2020, it always planned to offer a more conventional open flybridge version too. The fact that it has taken Princess two years to get round to it is actually good news.

Concerns that the X95’s bold new looks might prove too much for some to swallow have shown to be largely unfounded. As a result, the yard has been so busy churning out X95s (18 built with a further eight on order) that the Princess Y95 got temporarily shifted onto the back burner.

Now it has finally arrived, we can’t see the workers on the Y95 production line getting much downtime either!

Featuring a full-length open flybridge with an enclosed bridge deck a few steps forward and down from it, the new Y-model has a sleeker, more conventional profile than the X95.

It loses out on that boat’s spectacular skylounge and the “country kitchen” option of an open-plan main deck with a big galley/dining area under the windscreen but the rest of the interior matches it blow for blow and the upshot is even more outside entertaining space to revel in.

Princess X95 review: Widebody design ushers in a brave new world

£6950000

Pearl 95 test drive review: Behind the wheel of an exquisite British-designed superyacht

The most obvious win is that vast new flybridge, which much like the one on the new Sunseeker 100 Yacht has asymmetrical access. There are steps leading up to it from the aft cockpit but you can also walk forward from the flybridge through a small gate on the port side to a gently sloping side deck that leads down to another socialising space on the foredeck.

This in turn leads round to another set of steps on the starboard side that drops you back down to main deck level. While this might make life a little harder for the crew when it comes to putting out fenders, it gives a much better connection between the different levels and locations of the outdoor guest spaces.

The flybridge is predictably massive with multiple furniture options as well as a hot tub, a 1,000kg crane (so you can store a couple of jetskis up here) and a hard top with either a solid composite structure, fixed glass skylights or rotating louvres.

To our eyes, the foredeck lounge with its sunpads on one level and sofa on another isn’t quite as appealing as the X95’s more sociable arrangement of a big U-shaped seating area and sunpad all on the same level but the Y95’s long raked windscreen puts paid to that.

Princess-Y95-foredeck

The foredeck and flybridge are neatly linked via the port side deck

The other minor sacrifice is the loss of the forward-facing window from the main deck owner’s cabin . By any other standards, it’s still a magnificent cabin with big side windows guaranteeing panoramic views and lots of natural light but there’s something quite special about lying in bed looking straight out in the direction of travel.

The lower deck accommodation is exactly the same as the X95’s with two equally impressive full-beam VIP cabins at either end and a pair of twins/doubles in between, all with their own ensuite bathrooms.

The engine room and crew quarters occupy the aft end of the lower deck, again with multiple options for the number of cabins and either a crew mess, beach club or jet-ski garage behind the lifting transom.

Twin MTU V12s of either 1900hp or 2000hp enable speeds of up to 24 knots and a range of more than 1,500nm at 10-12 knots from 13,800 litres of fuel. It all adds up to another fine flagship for the Plymouth yard that sneaks under the 24m loadline threshold, leaving customers the tricky choice of whether to plump for X or Y.

Princess Y95: Queen of the Y Class

  • January 26, 2024

The Princess Y95 impressed guests during its Asia debut in Singapore, with one more Y Class flagship now in Thailand and another ordered for the region through long-time dealer Boat Lagoon Yachting. Words: Nick Hung; Photos: Boat Lagoon Yachting

Boat Lagoon Yachting has secured at least three orders for the Princess Y95

When Boat Lagoon Yachting staged the Asia premiere of the Princess Y95 at Singapore’s ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove, it was highlighting only the start of the superyacht’s story in Southeast Asia. Another hull was delivered to Phuket in time to be the star of this year’s Thailand International Boat Show.

And there’s more to come, with Boat Lagoon Yachting also confirming a third order for a Y95, which will add to the 400-plus Princess yachts it has sold in Southeast Asia since the dealership was founded in 1994. In fact, some of the region’s growing family of Princess yacht owners were among the first to see the Y95 in local waters at its Asia premiere.

Asia’s first Y95 was showcased in Singapore

“The three Princess Y95s were purchased even before the model debuted in our region, which is why we were really thrilled to introduce it in Singapore,” says Vrit Yongsakul, Boat Lagoon Yachting’s founder and Group Managing Director “We’re very confident in the Southeast Asia market for luxury yachts in the 95ft category, as we’ve seen particularly high movement at the upper end of the market.”

Vrit’s confidence is well founded. The three Y95 orders followed the dealer’s two sales of the X95, the yacht that pioneered a new generation for Princess as the British builder shelved its M Class of superyachts (30M, 35M, 40M) to make way at its South Yard in Plymouth for production of the two new 95 sister models.

The foredeck is accessible from the flybridge and main deck

Both the Y95 and X95 share the same hull and the same lower-deck layout. On both, the interior of the main deck almost reaches the bow and contributes to the models’ extra-long flybridge or ‘superfly’.

While the X95 is notable for its enclosed skylounge fronted by a reverse windscreen, the Y95 has an open flybridge and a raised pilothouse with a traditionally raked windscreen. However, the flowing, forward-raked lines of the hard-top superstructure tip their hat to the aggressive styling of the X95, one of the shipyard’s first collaborations with Pininfarina.

The Italian styling studio continues to be part of the shipyard’s ‘triangle’ of design collaborators along with the Princess Design Studio and Olesinski, the builder’s long-time naval architecture partner based in Cowes. Pininfarina’s work is particularly evident on the Y95’s hull lines, which provide a flowing side profile and frame the largest hull windows ever installed in a Princess yacht.

OUTDOOR FUN

The Y95 starts aft with a conventional-looking swim platform, but it’s home to an enormous, 1,000kg-capacity transformer platform that can be used to deploy a 5m-plus tender and toys, or provide a wide stairway to the water or dock.

Princess Y95, Asia, Singapore, Y Class, Boat Lagoon Yachting

The transformer platform can carry up to 1,000kg and deploy a 5m tender

The transom can be either a garage or, as in the case of the Singapore hull, a covered beach club containing an angular sofa and a table facing a wet bar topped by a fitted TV.

External stairways lead to the large aft cockpit, which can also be accessed by a remote-controlled 5m-long, telescopic passarelle. The cockpit is fitted with a wide, forward-facing C-shaped sofa and offers owners the choice of a large teak dining table or a coffee table and loose chairs. Other options include two styles of wet bar in the forward port corner.

Princess Y95, Asia, Singapore, Y Class, Boat Lagoon Yachting

The cockpit can have a coffee table or large dining table

Stairs to port lead to the flybridge, which is among the yacht’s most impressive areas. The yacht in Singapore features a central jacuzzi by the stairs and there’s still plenty of space aft for chairs, sunbeds or even a tender if an owner wants to include a crane integrated into the flybridge superstructure.

The area covered by the hard top is dominated by a dining table with room for 10 chairs, although another option for the starboard side is a fixed C-shaped sofa and a foldable table. To port is an elegantly designed wet bar featuring a sink, hob, electric barbecue and drawer refrigerator, while guests can park themselves on a couple of bar stools.

Forward is a raised twin-seat, three-screen helm station to starboard that’s flanked to port by L shaped companion seating, a cosy area neighboured by doorways to two other zones.

Aft of the companion seating is a low door to a side passage that leads to the foredeck, which has integrated sunpads in front of the pilot house and a couple of steps down to a wide, sunken sofa that offers nice views over the bulwarks but otherwise feels part of the crew’s working area.

Princess Y95, Asia, Singapore, Y Class, Boat Lagoon Yachting

Forward is a long dining table for 10

Meanwhile, a sliding companionway door by the upper helm leads down to the impressive main pilot house, where a central captain’s chair faces a five-screen console and is flanked by a chart table to starboard and a portside L-shaped sofa fitted with a sliding table. Starboard stairs lead down to the guest lobby on the main deck.

INTERIOR COMFORT

Typically, though, guests will enter the interior from the aft cockpit. Immediately notable for large windows and typically exquisite Princess joinery in oak, with walnut as an option, the large lounge can be laid out with a large L-shaped or C-shaped sofa to port and either a facing sofa or long cabinet to starboard. Entertainment is provided by a retractable 65in 4K UHD LED TV and a Naim audio system.

The saloon has a spacious lounge with large sofas on both sides before a formal dining area forward

Forward is a large, oblong table offering dining for 10. Princess also offers this area with an L-shaped bar by the port door to the galley and a round dining table to starboard, where the hallway leads forward to the lower-deck stairs, day head and the full-beam owner’s suite.

Making the most of a widebody design in the forward third of the yacht, the master starts with an entrance flanked by two hanging cupboards before a long, curved sofa and a coffee table, although the starboard side can otherwise include a couple of loose chairs or built-in furniture.

Princess Y95, Asia, Singapore, Y Class, Boat Lagoon Yachting

The starboard hallway leads to the master suite, past stairways to the pilot house and guest cabins

Each side of the bedroom has a massive one-piece window, with the port side offering a nice view from a vanity desk integrated into a long cabinet with drawers.

The bed is placed centrally and faces forward to a TV on a bulkhead flanked by two doors; portside to a walk-in dressing room and starboard to a twin-sink bathroom with a shower and an enclosed toilet. All guest bathroom floors are offered in marble, granite or quartz.

The four guest cabins on the lower deck are led by an impressive full-beam VIP midships, where the bedroom area is much like the master suite except the integrated cabinet is to starboard and the furniture options are to port. Both the twin-sink bathroom and walk-in wardrobe are similar to those in the master but are located aft, offering a buffer between the bed and engine room.

Forward on either side of the lobby are mirror guest cabins, each with a hanging cupboard and en-suite bathroom forward. The bow cabin has an aft-facing bed and, compared to the two identical guest cabins, a larger bathroom and more storage space, plus a vanity table.

The Y95 in Singapore is fitted with an interior beach club

Meanwhile, the spacious crew area is just forward of the beach club and includes an en-suite captain’s cabin, bunk cabin and a shared bathroom.

THE JOURNEY CONTINUES

The Y95 is an ideal yacht for long cruises around Southeast Asia and Boat Lagoon Yachting is ideally placed to support journeys between Singapore and Phuket, where the dealer has its head office and international-standard service facilities at Phuket Boat Lagoon.

It’s a trip the yacht can comfortably cover without refuelling, as her twin 2,000mhp Man V12 engines and well over 13,000 litres of fuel give her a range of about 1,000nm at an economical cruising speed, although she can reach 22-24 knots if needed.

Princess Y95, Asia, Singapore, Y Class, Boat Lagoon Yachting

The impressive pilothouse, which sits forward of the outdoor flybridge helm

“Owners have idyllic sailing waters in Singapore, but with a large-capacity yacht like the Y95, they can easily cruise up to the beautiful Andaman Sea coast off Thailand and other destinations such as Phuket or Phang Nga Bay where the yachting conditions are perfect,” Vrit says.

The first Y95 in Southeast Asia is a big, beautiful and powerful Princess, yet she’s just the start of a story with at least another two chapters.

Princess Yachts has been taken over by a major American private equity firm in a deal which will take the Plymouth company “to the next level”. New York-headquartered KPS Capital Partners has entered into an agreement to acquire a controlling interest in Princess Yachts (Holdings) Ltd, and said the investment will accelerate the company’s growth and innovation.

Existing shareholders will retain ownership in the company under the deal. Completion of the transaction is expected by the end of March.

KPS runs a family of investment funds with more than US$14.4bn of assets under management. For more than 30 years it has been acquiring manufacturing businesses and its current portfolio includes component maker Autokiniton, light vehicle manufacturer AM General, Briggs and Stratton engines, battery maker C&D Technologies, and plant-based foods business Primient.

Antony Sheriff, chief executive of Princess Yachts, said the deal will enable the Plymouth firm, the UK’s largest manufacturer of luxury yachts, to grow and bring out new models. He said: “We are thrilled to partner with KPS for this exciting new chapter for Princess Yachts. KPS and the Princess Yachts team are deeply committed to investing in the company’s future while continuing to further strengthen our portfolio of best-in-class motor yachts.

“With a current order book nearing a record US$1bn and many model lines sold into 2025, we have never been in a stronger commercial position. Together with KPS’ tremendous track record of manufacturing excellence and investing in leading brands, we are now positioned to take Princess Yachts to the next level of industry leadership in quality and innovation. Under KPS’ ownership, we will accelerate a range of growth and operational initiatives to build upon our long and successful history.”

KPS’ portfolio of companies already generates total annual revenues of about US$22bn, operates 232 manufacturing facilities in 27 countries and combined has about 53,000 employees. KPS said it creates value “almost exclusively through operational and performance improvement”.

Ryan Harrison, a partner of KPS Mid-Cap Investments, said: “We are excited to make this significant investment in Princess Yachts, a leading company in the luxury global yachting industry with an iconic brand grounded in British tradition, a remarkable and growing product range, and world-wide reputation for quality and innovation. KPS’ investment will accelerate Princess’ growth trajectory and fund numerous investments for its future. We look forward to working with Princess’ existing stockholders, chief executive Antony Sheriff, the senior leadership team, and the talented employee base at Princess Yachts.”

Princess Yachts was acquired by L Capital 2 FCPR, an investment group co-sponsored by LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton) and Groupe Arnault in 2008. In January 2016, L Capital merged with Catterton to become L Catterton, now recognised as the largest global consumer-focused investment firm.

Last year L Catterton hired bankers at Macquarie to find a buyer for Princess Yachts . At the time, Princess Yachts told PlymouthLive it was looking to start discussions with potential investors to provide financial support needed to build a huge new factory at its Devonport operation.

In late 2021, PlymouthLive revealed Princess Yachts wants to build another factory in Plymouth’s freeport area in the South Yard so it can produce more vessels, employ more people and fulfil a US$1bn order book. The company was also undergoing a sales boost, now selling more than 300 boats annually.

Tankoa Introduces 230-Foot Milano

  • By Jake Lamb
  • March 22, 2024

Tankoa Milano

Tankoa Yachts in Italy has unveiled plans for the 230-foot Milano, which was developed in partnership with fellow Italian company Nauta Design.

“This project means a further step in the growth and consolidation phase that makes Tankoa one of the top players in the construction of luxury megayachts,” Vincenzo Poerio, CEO of Tankoa Yachts, stated in a press release. “Fusing cutting-edge technology with meticulous attention to details, the 70-meter Milano embodies our vision for excellence.”

The Milano is inspired by the Italian city of Milan, which is where Nauta Design is based. Beam on the vessel is nearly 39 feet, and the draft is 11½ feet. Styling on the exterior is sleek, with a substantial after section for guest relaxation.

Tankoa Milano

“The stretched horizontal lines establish a seamless connection with the sea’s surface and the horizon, providing an intimate connection with the natural environment,” Mario Pedol, Nauta co-founder, stated in the press release. “It embodies a reinvention of clean forms and harmonious volumes, resulting in a visual effect of lightness, purity and serenity.”

The elongated stern section includes a beach club with a lounge, convertible gymnasium, sauna, massage room and foldout platforms for extra water access. There’s also an outdoor swimming pool with sun lounging. Because the engine room is a single level on the under-lower deck, guests have a direct passage from their accommodations to the beach club.

Those lower-deck accommodations include four guest staterooms that are separate from the crew cabins, crew mess, laundry and water-toy garage. Two VIP staterooms are up on the main deck with foldout terraces. Also on the main deck, forward, is a tender garage.

Tankoa Milano

The upper deck is the owners’ deck, with a stateroom, private pool, study, sky lounge, outdoor dining and helipad.

On the bridge deck is the captain’s cabin along with a cinema, while the sundeck has a lounge area and sunbeds.

The diesel-electric propulsion system on the Tankoa Milano includes four variable-speed Caterpillar C32 generators that supply electrical energy to two 1,640-kilowatt e-motors. According to Tankoa, the setup allows for a top speed of 16.5 knots.

Are there fuel cells in the Tankoa Milano specs ? Yes. Tankoa is integrating methanol fuel cells that are expected to provide up to 200 kilowatts of power. (The main advantage of methanol fuel cells, experts say, is the ease of transport of methanol, an energy-dense yet reasonably stable liquid at all environmental conditions.)

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

princess yacht y95

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

princess yacht y95

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

princess yacht y95

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

princess yacht y95

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

princess yacht y95

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

princess yacht y95

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

princess yacht y95

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
