49m classic sailing yacht Orion of the Seas sold

The classic 49.29 metre sailing yacht Orion of the Seas , listed for sale by Sandeman Yacht Company, has been sold with the buyer introduced by Yves Di Lena of YDL Yachting.

A truly iconic yacht, Orion of the Seas was built by the British yard Camper & Nicholsons in 1910 to a design by Charles E. Nicholson and launched in 1910 as Sylvana .

She was completely rebuilt in 2005 by her previous owners to modern standards with many of her interior features retained to ensure her historic integrity. During the refit, the hull planking was removed, taking it down to bare steel frames, which were then re-galvanised and painted, before the massive teak and iroko planks were bolted back on.

Accommodation is for up to 10 guests in a full-beam master suite and four en suite guest staterooms plus accommodation for 11 crew members.

Under power, twin Caterpillar 230hp engines give her a cruising speed of 11 knots and a top speed of 13 knots.

Orion of the Seas was asking €13,200,000.

Orion 49 / Explorer

The Orion 49 / Explorer has the same hull, keel, rudder and rig as the Orion 49 / Cruiser (design 169). This version has a different deck, cockpit, deckhouse, interior and a different transom with a scope. The assignment was to design a robust and fast family cruising yacht, with a small deck saloon and suitable for sailing in cold regions.

Also for this version, we have chosen aluminum, partly for its robust looks like (this aluminum is unpainted) and partly because aluminum is an extremely solid and lightweight construction material.

Orion 49/ Explorer In order to anchor close to the shore, to sail a nice river, or to allow the mooring in a nice harbor, we have choosen for a retractable keel. Because of the keel is vertically retractable, it’s possible to sail with various drafts, wherein said steering characteristics remain the same.

Exterior This version of the Orion 49 has a smaller cockpit with one pedestal. Two winches are in the centre of the cockpit for tne main- and jibsheet.  The seats have a good backrest and sit comfortably. The entire cockpit is kept as low as possible, to give the crew in heavy seas security. For that reason, there is also created sufficient space behind the helm. The mainsheet is attached to the deck saloon, so there is no maintrack in the cockpit.

Charles E Nicholson was the naval architecture company involved in the technical vessel plans for ORION OF THE SEAS. Also the company Charles E Nicholson skillfully worked on this project. In 1910 she was actually launched with accolade in Gosport and following sea trials and final completion was afterwards delivered to the new owner. Camper & Nicholsons completed their new build sailing yacht in the United Kingdom. Her core hull was built out of teak/oak/steel frames. The sailing yacht superstructure is fabricated largely with teak. The total length of the luxury yacht on deck is 38.65 (126.8 ft). With a width of 7.32 m or 24 feet ORION OF THE SEAS has moderate room. A deep draught of 4.21m (13.8ft) affects the number of worldwide ports she can visit, depending on their particular depth. She had refit maintenance and alteration work carried out by 2004.

The 3306TA engine powering the yacht is produced by CATERPILLAR. For propulsion ORION OF THE SEAS has twin screw propellers. The engine of the ship generates 230 horse power (or 169 kilowatts). She is equiped with 2 engines. The combined output for the yacht is thus 460 HP or 338 KW.

About Luxury Sailing Catamaran ORION: Luxury sailing catamaran Orion is a custom built superyacht, a rare breed indeed.  She has all the pedigree that one could wish from the track record of her designers, the universal respect for her builder, and the knowledge and experience of her owner. She is absolutely ready for any adventure around the Caribbean and during special occasions in other luxury sailing holiday spots. The yacht was last refitted in 2013 and as yacht charter boat designed like a synthesis of from all of Catana's knowledge you can rest assured that if you book this yacht, you are in for a special experience Exterior: The yachts design profits from Catana’s Carbon Infusion technology, the Twaron Impact process and a number of latest Catana innovations.  The custom units designed and built by the Catana shipyard provide all charter guest with extremely comfortable and safe surroundings. The headroom, under the nacelle, which is always a great surprised, and the length of the two hulls give the ORION a remarkable stability on the water.  And while comfort is important, the ORION also has all the assets to face the most extreme sailing conditions. The curved dagger boards, unique offering on all Catana yachts, make it possible for the boat to glide downwind and for the helmsman to enjoy the sensations previously reserved to professional navigators. They are also incredibly efficient in sailing upwind and avoid heavy weather.  The interior panelling and cabinetry is built in the finest French cherrywood and almost all of this impeccable carpentry is foam cored for lightweight strength and stability. Interior: Everything on board is conceived to make the life easy and to allow the passengers to devote themselves to the joy of speed on the water during long crossings.  The customised furniture and panoramic views make moving on board and navigation very comfortable. The salon being exceptionally spacious, the cabins large and isolated from any disturbing noise thanks to the insulation system and the height on the water, make this super yacht one of the best sailing catamarans on the yacht charter market today.  ORION is a very light and airy yacht with 20 opening hull ports and 12 opening hatches and windows with screens and blinds, in addition to the huge sliding doors to the cockpit. Indoor and outdoor salons offer choices for dining and lounging throughout the day and into the evening with meals prepared by your personal chef. Two swim platforms, two deck showers, two dinghies and plenty of water toys keep guests of all ages as active as they wish to be. Accommodation: Luxury sailing catamaran ORION has a very spacious interior which offers flexible accommodations for couples and families.   Master Stateroom: The starboard pontoon houses the private master apartment with its huge en suite bath and the family area.  This unique suite has two connecting cabins and one large bath with a vanity, toilet and shower, accommodating up to 2+2 guests. One of the cabins has a king size bed. The adjoining kid’s cabin, dubbed the "Pirate's Den", has two double beds plus a smaller child’s bed perfect for older kids or a nanny and younger children. Guest cabins: There is one more large master/VIP room with king size bed and large en suite. On top, the additional en suite VIP stateroom can be configured with one king bed for a couple or two single beds. All cabins have individual A/C controls, CD and DVD players and portholes that look out to the horizon. Chef: Holistic gourmet chef, Allison Thompson is responsible for food on board of ORION luxury sailing catamaran.  She is always happy to ensure her food will please the body and delight the senses of every guest onboard. Dining aboard ORION is an experience for all the senses - the ultimate expression of that experience is chef’s artful presentation influenced by cuisines enjoyed during her world travels.  She says of her cooking: “My culinary style is inspired by world travels, 200,000 sea miles, and my love of whole foods. I like to cook using fresh produce; opting for local spray-free, organic and free range when available.”  Alison was inspired by cuisines and learned to cook in countries as varied as Mexico, India, Italy, Thailand, The Pacific Islands, the Mediterranean, California fusion, and Japanese Sushi... to name a few.  She is a self-taught chef with over 30 years’ experience. Alison loves to learn from those she cooks with and for who she cooks.  And as she has  catered for people desiring to lose weight, vegetarians, vegans, raw foodies, no fat cholesterol-free heart patients, diabetics and kids  - -  and meat eaters,  you can be sure that whatever you like, it’s her pleasure to prepare it for you. Luxury crewed charter yacht ORION is fully air conditioned throughout. This is a non-smoking vessel. ORION´s experienced super yacht charter crew of up to 5 including the captain Scott Fratcher have a separate head and shower but share companionway with the guests. Guests may not be allowed to bring pets on-board.

Super Yacht TENDER: Mega yacht ORION has a 4.5m tender on board with a 90hp engine Super Yacht itineraries: Luxury sailing catamaran ORION will normally cruise around the East Caribbean. Usual sailing grounds cover the British Virgin Islands and the rest of Leeward islands including Anguilla, St Martin, St Barths and Antigua and Barbuda.  On occasion the yacht will gladly accept one way charters or direct charters in or around Windward Islands including Grenadines.

Luxury sailing yacht ORION (27.4m/90’) is a CATANA built super sail cat, launched in 2008 and refitted in 2013.  She accommodates up to 8+1 charter guests sleeping in 1 Owner appartment, 1 x King and 1 x VIP cabins, all of which are en suite.  There are at least 4 super yacht crew members on board at any time.  This charter yacht mainly cruises at speeds of around 9kn.  ORION is normally offered for luxury yacht charter within the EAST Caribbean Islands, between BVI’s and the Grenadines.   Thanks to hear twin engines totalling 430hp, and impressive sail area, during the right sea and wind conditions, she can reach maximum speeds of around 18kn while cruising at speeds of around 9kn.  She is a perfect owner yacht whose best features are an enormous owners apartment with 2 cabins and large family area, great safety when sailing at high winds and good sailing performance.

Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.  

Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila

Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.

Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales

The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas

Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.

Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Oriental Mindoro

Further south, yachtsmen may moor at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club in Oriental Mindoro, an island location that’s home to tourist attractions like the Sabang Wreck dive site, lively beachfront resorts, and the Malasimbo Music Festival. Puerto Galera Yacht Club has been in operation for almost thirty years and lends services such as refueling provisions and yacht repairs from its marina. Boat owners also enjoy optimal convenience if mooring here, as they can also shop for spare parts in the nearby Batangas port.

Busuanga Yacht Club, Puerta del Sol Bay Marina, Palawan

Beautiful Palawan is a bucket-list destination for many, especially those who dream of cruising its crystalline waters. Accommodating the yachting community in this island province is the Busuanga Yacht Club, which promises secure mooring amidst breathtaking white-sand beaches. Here, each vessel will benefit from a typhoon-safe harbor, easy refueling, and direct access to transportation hubs like the New Busuanga Airport. Adjoining this marina is the Puerta del Sol Bay Resort, which offers luxurious accommodations to visitors. When not atop the deck of a boat, travelers can also explore the lagoons and freshwater lakes of Coron, go shipwreck diving, or relax in the hot springs of Maquinit.

Iloilo Sailing Club, Arevelo, Iloilo City, Iloilo

Iloilo Province is home to some of the country’s most beautiful old-world architecture, a flourishing ecotourism industry, and delectably fresh seafood cuisine. What will round off an unforgettable visit to Iloilo, however, is an excursion to the Iloilo Sailing Club on a leisure watercraft. The club accepts visitors and encourages membership in the case of medium and long-stay mooring. It also hosts a number of amenities and activities, including a dinghy storage, a beach bar and restaurant, and classes for those who want to learn about sailing. In recent months, the Iloilo Sailing Club has also been a convenient meet-up point for big maritime events, such as the Iloilo-Guimaras Paraw Regatta and the Seafarers’ Job Fair.

Cebu Yacht Club, Mactan Island, Cebu

The historic Mactan Island in Cebu was the site of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines. Now known as a commercial hub that hosts a prolific furniture and musical instruments industries, Mactan is also the location of the Cebu Yacht Club, an institution that is beloved by the locals. Aside from being an ideal spot to restock on much-needed fuel and supplies, the Cebu Yacht Club is also a trusted club to commission for boat repairs. There’s a good vibe in this club for everybody, as it sports both luxury accommodations and a waterfront strip of restaurants that laid-back diners can frequent. MINDANAO

Holiday Oceanview Marina, Samal Island, Davao del Norte

The Holiday Oceanview Marina is a major attraction of Samal Island in Davao del Norte Province, one that welcomes Filipino and foreign yachtsmen alike to moor within its premises. The space is quite roomy, in fact, with 56 berths that can fit vessels up to 15 meters in length. The club also has a boat ramp that can accommodate boats up to 18 meters in length. The well-guarded and weather-safe marina is a gateway to some of Mindanao’s finest attractions, such as the Pearl Farm, Hagimit Falls, and Giant Clam Sanctuary.  

There’s no better way to discover the Philippines from end to end than getting onboard a seaworthy vessel and going on a long cruise, with stops in some of the most beautiful places in the country. Find a safe harbor in any of these major clubs and marinas, and participate in the renaissance of sailing in the Philippines.
