FAQ's About Boat Hull Cleaning
Explore answers to your questions, how often do you need to clean the bottom of a boat.
The frequency of cleaning the bottom of your boat depends on several factors, including the type of water you operate in and the usage of your boat. Generally, it’s recommended to clean the bottom of your boat every 3 to 6 months.
For our waters here in North Carolina, we recommend either a bi-monthly or monthly routine bottom cleaning schedule.
What is the best way to clean the bottom of a boat?
You have three main options:
- DIY Cleaning : Haul the boat out of the water, use a pressure washer while all of the growth is still wet and soft, use a scrub brush or scraper, and an eco-friendly hull cleaner. Rinse thoroughly after scrubbing.
- Professional Boatyard : Take your boat to a boatyard for thorough cleaning using specialized equipment. They can also inspect for potential issues.
- Professional Underwater Diving Company : Hire divers to clean the hull while the boat remains in the water. This is convenient for larger boats or those docked year-round.
Do I need to haul out my boat for you to do a bottom clean?
No, our full-time dive teams come to your boat and clean the bottom while it’s in the water. We provide before-and-after photos, inspection reports, and replace zinc anodes as needed. Hauling out your boat is only necessary for applying fresh bottom paint or repairing damage that can’t be fixed underwater.
Do you clean boat bottoms that don't have bottom paint?
Unfortunately, we no longer clean boat bottoms without bottom paint due to liability concerns. If your boat has a bare bottom and will be kept in the water, we strongly recommend applying bottom paint as soon as possible.
How much does it cost to clean the hull of a boat?
There is no real exact answer to this question, because every boat is different in the amount of attention it will need. We price all of our services very fair to the size of boat and amount of work needed to be done.
Avoid These 5 Common Performance Problems With Our Hull Cleaning Services
Don't let your boat become a victim of the silent marine growth, structural damage and hull deterioration.
Marine organisms, especially barnacles, can erode the hull’s protective coatings and the hull material itself. The acidic waste products of some marine organisms can also cause corrosion, especially on metal hulls.
Blocked Intakes Leading to Engine Overheating
Marine growth can clog a boat’s water intakes, which are crucial for cooling the engine. A blocked intake can lead to engine overheating, posing serious risks of engine damage or even fire.
Compromised Steering and Safety Concerns
Growth on the rudder or boat’s steering mechanism can severely affect its function, making steering unresponsive or unpredictable. This poses significant safety risks, especially in challenging navigation conditions.
Degraded Propeller Performance Resulting in Mechanical Strain
Marine growth on propellers can cause them to become unbalanced, leading to vibrations, strain on the shaft, and potential mechanical damage. Heavy growth can reduce the propeller’s hydrodynamic efficiency, straining the engine and reducing the boat’s performance.
Increased Fuel Consumption and Reduced Efficiency
A fouled hull increases the drag, forcing the engine to work harder to maintain speed. This results in significantly higher fuel consumption, reducing the boat’s range and efficiency, and leading to higher operational costs.
