Sweden Yacht Charter, Europe

Journey north on a Sweden luxury yacht charter and witness the Northern Lights or the Midnight Sun in awe-striking surroundings. This Nordic holiday destination is a recent magnet for explorer yachts, motor yachts and sailing yachts, who choose Sweden for its compelling history and natural beauty that is just as rich although starkly different to the lifestyle of the Mediterranean.

Sweden is bordered by Finland to the east and Norway to the west, and a Scandinavian holiday could easily involve more than one country to take in the region's most remarkable sights.

Malmo, Gothenburg and Stockholm are the main cities to visit for shopping, culture and an upbeat nightlife in a country famed for its Volvos, Vikings, snowbound wintry conditions, herring and meatballs. With the archipelagos surrounding Stockholm there are myriad private anchorages for sunbathing, swimming or holding an exclusive party.

The peninsulas are excellent for exploration by kayak, paddleboard of jet ski, and those on board hoping to fish for their supper will be delighted by the Baltic Sea inundated with cod, salmon and lobster. Scuba divers can head down to see these species swimming freely through the waters, all while visiting one wreck after another that sank more than a century ago.

Sweden offers a diverse set of yacht charter possibilities, and this makes this Nordic country an excellent and perfect base for seasoned sailors who want to visit the most important and popular sights and attractions in the region. Stockholm is a main maritime hub and provides convenient access to several attractions within the Baltic coast. In line with this, there has been an increase in large luxury yachts and superyachts - both private and available for charter - visiting Sweden and Northern Europe.

There are plenty of ways to spend a week in Sweden to make your holiday an experience that you will cherish for a lifetime. Contact CharterWorld to find out more about luxury yacht charter itineraries and vessel options for this incredible and relatively undiscovered destination.

Five quick reasons to visit Sweden:

Unforgettable natural phenomena (Midnight Sun, Aurora Borealis), Stunning waterfalls, Impressive forts and castles, Active outdoor lifestyle, Thriving flora and fauna

More about this part of Europe

Sweden is surrounded by the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia. With its close proximity to Norway a luxury yacht itinerary could easily include a visit to the mystical Norwegian Fjords, where the waterfalls are frozen solid over winter in a fantastic icy display.

Sample Belgium's delectable chocolates and stop by at Antwerp for its famous diamond district, or keep your eye out as you pass by the Dutch shipyards. To the east, you can cruise through the Baltic Sea and visit St. Petersburg, renowned for its art and cafe culture.

Sweden Yacht Charter Experiences

Your yacht charter holiday experience in Sweden is an eclectic mix of the old charm which pervades in several old towns and the cosmopolitan character of modern cities. An important destination for yacht charter holidaymakers is Gothenburg, which is the second biggest city of Sweden. It is famous for its diverse shopping opportunities, dining treats and sightseeing choices.

sailboat charter sweden

The beautiful city of Gothenburg is styled with boulevards and broad canals that exude a magical and romantic vibe. An evening in Gothenburg can be spent sampling the local craft beers and wines at the bars and clubs along the waterfront, but during the day there are world-class museums to explore, including the Museum of Fine Art, Museum of Natural History, the Maritime Museum with an Aquarium and the Museum of World Culture. Take in the fresh air with a stroll through the Botanical Garden, and this modern city has a fantastic array of modern boutiques and shopping malls.

North of Malmo the bays have beautiful sandy beaches for games and water sports, and the nearby peninsula is the Kullenberg Nature Reserve which is a popular spot for Scuba divers because of the range of shallow and deep sites. Herring is often spotted along with cod, salmon and lobster and a basking shark might occasionally be sighted in the area as well.

In Malmo itself there are some excellent hidden bars and Michelin-starred restaurants to end a day of sunbathing on the local beaches or exploring the sights: Malmö Castle, Little Square, St. Peter's Church, Malmö Konsthall and Moderna Museet Malmö are close to the large local parks and are best explored by bike.

Skane at the southern tip of Sweden is referred to as the Swedish Riviera and the most popular area between Osterlen to Kristianstad is renowned for its long soft crescent beaches and clear waters. The bays make excellent anchorages on a stop along the coastline and wind conditions are ideal for windsurfers, kite surfers and sailing dinghys.

The picturesque and well-loved yacht charter holiday destinations in the charming Nordic country include the Stockholm archipelago and the Bohuslan region. Stockholm holds the enviable distinction of being the world’s largest archipelago. Ideal places to visit include premier tourist spots like Marstand and Nykoping , where you can immerse yourself in everyday life in a typical Swedish fishing village.

The capital city of Stockholm has enough to keep you in the city for days, to name but a few: The palace/museum 'Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde', the Vasa Museum which holds the well-preserved wreck of a 17th Century ship, the ABBA Museum and the Thielska Galleriet, which has an extensive collection that includes the paintings of Edvard Munch. The Old Town on the island of Gamla Stan is colourful, atmospheric and culturally rich with even more museums detailing medieval culture and royal life. The T-Centralen is also more than just a railways station – it’s an underground art exhibition and should be seen regardless of whether you intend to hop on a train.

There are walking tours of the city that tell of its captivating history and ghost stories, as well as tours taking you on tasting sessions for wine and craft beers. There are exceptional restaurants in Stockholm - including the three-starred Michelin restaurant Frantzén - for a sensational dining treat to make an anniversary or special occasion even more unforgettable.

Guide to Sweden

A Nordic dream home to the world's largest archipelago

Bordered by Finland to the east and Norway to the west, Sweden holds many awe-striking surroundings, stunning waterfalls and incredible scenery that draw visitors back to the area thanks to its compelling history and natural beauty.

Offering everything from deep blue archipelagos and Northern lights to incredible cuisine and unique design, Sweden is an incredibly stylish place to visit. A multicultural blend of trendy art galleries, historic museums and irresistible fine dining, guests on a luxury charter vacation have an abundance of opportunities to explore and experience the fascinating country.

Sweden’s capital city of Stockholm is particularly photogenic, built across 14 islands, Stockholm’s districts each offer something different and unique. From the lavish Östermalm, historic Gamla stan and the modern Kungsholmen, there is something to suit everyone's taste. The beautiful city of Gothenburg is styled with boulevards and broad canals that exude a magical and romantic ambience. Spend the day taking in the fresh air with a stroll through the Botanical Garden as well as exploring the modern cities boutiques and shopping malls. In the evening, you can enjoy an evening enjoying the local craft beers and refreshing wines at the bars and clubs along the scenic waterfront.

One of Sweden’s highlights is its natural grandeur, leave the city behind and sail across an archipelago to a quiet island where you can trek, explore and witness the natural assets that the area has to offer. You’ll  find plenty of medieval fishing towns and mesmerizing seascapes along Sweden’s 3,200km of coastline, framed by both the Baltic and North Seas.

Soak in the glorious views and picturesque anchorages at the southern tip of Sweden in Skane. Often referred to as the Swedish Riviera and the most popular area between Osterlen to Kristianstad, Skane is renowned for its long soft crescent beaches and clear waters. The bays make excellent anchorages on a stop along the coastline and the wind conditions are optimum for those wanting to try their hand at wind and kite surfing.

With over ninety-seven percent of Sweden’s surface area being made up of uninhabited pine forests, mountain ranges and tundras, there are plenty of outdoor activities for you to embark on during your superyacht charter vacation. The peninsulas are excellent for exploration by kayak, paddleboard or jet ski, and those on board hoping to fish for their supper will be delighted by the Baltic Sea inundated with cod, salmon and lobster.

A boat from Gothenburg can either take you around Sweden’s second biggest city or to Denmark, which is only a short boat ride away. Enjoy these sights and more with a boat rental in Sweden .

Explore historical Sweden

Sweden has a rich history spanning centuries, with numerous historical sites and landmarks that offer a glimpse into its interesting past. From ruins of the Viking era to more modern times there is plenty to see for every visitor.

Gamla Stan , the Old Town of Stockholm , is a well-preserved medieval part of the capital that features narrow cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and iconic landmarks such as the Royal Palace and Stockholm Cathedral . While the cathedral dates back to Medieval times and is the oldest one of its kind in the city, the other buildings are only going back as far as the 17th and 18th century. Take a stroll through the charming streets and explore the historic architecture and charming squares. Definitely a must when visiting this part of Sweden!

Discover mystical Sweden

There is a lot of folklore in the Swedish tradition, making for excellent stories by the fireplace. I mean, imagine sitting beside the fire on a cold winter's night after a long day out on a boat and hearing these old stories while sipping on a nice wine or a warm cup of tea in a bar. A mythical creature with the name of Näcken is one of the most popular characters and is said to appear as a naked man playing the violin in rivers and lakes.

If you are not into stories, you can always head out into nature to explore the mysteries of nature. Witness the natural phenomena of the Midnight Sun during the summer months in the Arctic Circle. Experience the ethereal glow of the sun even at midnight. This is a once in a lifetime experience you wouldn’t want to miss. In the winter, chase the breathtaking Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) dancing across the night sky.

Sailing conditions in Sweden

While you will experience colder temperatures the further north you go, in the summer, Stockholm enjoys temperatures that frequently reach the low- to mid-20s with water temperatures of around 18°C. Visby offers roughly the same temperatures, but with winds in the area. These winds can sometimes even be strong in the summer. Tides are not a particular concern and remain at consistent levels with calm seas keeping waves reasonably low too.

The waters that surround Sweden are generally calm and make for a pleasant sailing holiday. You’ll only need to watch out for stronger gusts between the narrow passages that snake around the islands. There are generally very few hazards to watch out for, except for some rocky areas around the archipelago.

If you need help with the navigation and operation of your boat, you can take advantage of booking an experienced skipper with Zizoo.

How much does it cost to rent a boat in Sweden?

Sweden is certainly not a cheap country in general and a boat rental in Sweden might be a little pricier than what you are used to from the Mediterranean, but it is definitely worth it. Prices can also vary depending on the season, type of boat and the amount of people travelling.

What type of boat is best for sailing in Sweden?

As Sweden is blessed with gusts that allow for a sailing adventure, a popular choice is to rent a sailboat in Sweden . If you would like to be a little bit more independent of mother nature a motorboat rental might be an even better option for you.

Rent a sailboat in Sweden

Pros of renting a sailboat in Sweden

Rent a sailboat in Sweden if you are ready for a real adventure. Sail with the frequent gusts in the picturesque Baltic Sea and admire the stunning mountainous landscape.

Are you always conscious of your environment and don’t want to add to the pollution and CO2-emissions? Then a sailboat rental in Sweden is just the right choice for you. You simply sail with the wind and don’t need to worry about using an engine and fuel it with petrol.

Another great thing about renting a sailboat in Sweden is the fact that they are often the most affordable boats to rent. Not just in terms of the price for a bareboat charter, but also in terms of additional costs like petrol that you won’t have to worry about.

Cons of renting a sailboat in Sweden

Even though a sailboat charter in Sweden comes down to lower costs and sustainability, it also means that you will be highly dependent on mother nature. You won’t be able to sail if the winds are not strong enough and have to patiently wait for the wind to pick up again and cannot sail either if the winds are too strong. This might raise concerns for your safety.

Another thing to keep in mind when chartering a sailboat in Sweden is the fact that you need a lot of experience to operate them. You can’t just go on board, press a button and think that you’re going to be fine. You need to know how to navigate the steering wheel as well as how high or low the sail should go.

Rent a motorboat in Sweden

Pros of renting a motorboat in Sweden

A motorboat rental in Sweden is a great choice for anyone who enjoys the flexibility of being able to go whenever and wherever they want. All you need is a full tank and you’re good to go. There is no need to wait for the wind to pick up in order to move forward.

Do you plan on visiting Sweden’s most beautiful and pristine beaches? Then a motorboat charter in Sweden is the perfect choice for you! Motorboats generally have a shallow draft, allowing for easy access to the coast. One of the nicest beaches is Skanör Beach in the South of Sweden.

Cons of renting a motorboat in Sweden

If you are travelling on a budget, a motorboat hire in Sweden might not necessarily be the boat to go for. Although you can choose between more affordable and more luxurious types of motorboats, you need to keep in mind that you won’t just pay the price of the bareboat charter, but also for the petrol you are using on your trip.

Motorboat rental in Sweden

What kind of boat licence do you need when renting a boat in Sweden?

Anyone who wants to rent a boat in Sweden needs to be in possession of a valid boat licence - unless you are just planning on renting a smaller boat in Sweden that is not longer than 12 metres and doesn’t go beyond 4 metres width. Then you don’t need a licence.

The International Certificate of Competency or short ICC might be recognized in many other European countries, but not in Sweden. Here you should be able to present the Coastal Yachtmaster Diploma instead.

Sailing routes in Sweden

Sweden has many fascinating and beautiful landscapes to discover along its coastline. From quaint little fishing villages to bigger cities and mountains. As it does get quite cold and icy in the winter, coming here in the summer might be a better choice.

Start your sailing holiday from Lidingö near Stockholm and enjoy sailing around the myriad of islands that make up the Stockholm Archipelago . There are over 24.000 to choose from, including all the rocks and other interesting natural phenomena. If you just want to plan a day trip from Stockholm your best bet might be Fjäderholmarna , which is only a thirty minute boat ride away. While it might be nicer to visit the islands here in the summer, the winters here also have their charm.

From the Stockholm Archipelago , you can sail north to the Gulf of Bothnia or go down to Gotland . For those looking for pristine nature and a chance to get away from it all, it is recommended to sail around the Gulf of Bothnia . Luleå is a city that is worth visiting on your trip here if you crave some human interaction in between. Ormberget-Hertsölandet is a natural preserve with pristine natural beauty that you shouldn’t miss. And if you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can even sail over to Finland from here - it’s really not that far.

Gotland on the contrary is popular for travelers with more of a cultural interest who would also like to spend some time on some of Sweden’s best beaches. Also, head further south to Öland to explore the quaint fishing village, majestic forests, castle ruins and lovely beaches. Öland is also home to the Great Alvar , a natural landscape that is also a World Heritage Site. Families will also love visiting Ölands Animal and Amusement Park.

Västervik sits on the coast across the sea from Gotland and also offers mooring at buoys as an additional stopping point before heading to the islands or down the coast towards Malmö . Malmö itself is another major harbour offering longer-term berthing if desired. It’s a great city to visit if you’re interested in heading across and seeing Denmark as well.

Overall, a sailing holiday in Sweden is a unique way to see the varied landscape of this striking area too often missed by those travelling on land and experiencing a different kind of sailing adventure than the one you would get in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean.

With a coastline of 2400 km stretching from Strömstad in the west to Haparanda in the north, Sweden undoubtedly has a lot of places to go by boat! The country is bordered by the Skagerrak and Kattegat seas in the west and the Baltic Sea in the east.

If you're reading this text, you probably already have a fair idea of what Sweden has to offer when it comes to coastal destinations, but hopefully we can give you some new tips!

First and foremost we have the outstanding West Coast (also called the best coast by many, but everyone has their personal opinion on that matter). Cruise between the islands in the archipelago outside Gothenburg and experience the genuine island life with wooden cottages and cliffs. Classic destinations like Styrsö, Brännö and Köpstadsö are just a (long) stone's throw from Gothenburg's marinas.

And then there's the pearl of the west coast; the Bohuslän archipelago, a safe sailing distance away a little further north. With its salty baths, beautiful granite cliffs and many hours of sunshine, the Bohusk Coast is a destination that is hard to beat.

Even the Stockholm archipelago has a lot to offer with more than 30,000 islands and islets. With its large number of islands, the archipelago has something for everyone. You can find everything from lively bars and restaurants to peaceful natural islands.

So check out here what boats we have available in the metropolitan areas:

  • Hire a boat in Stockholm
  • Hire a boat in Gothenburg

Where can you sail in Sweden?

The east coast.

As I said, the east coast has a lot of variety, ranging from lush inner archipelago to barren outer archipelago. Such a varied nature makes the east coast and the Stockholm archipelago a natural mecca with a great diversity of species.

Fjäderholmarna

Fjäderholmarna is the perfect destination for a day trip or when you don't have much time as it's only a 20-30 minute boat ride from Stockholm's harbours. However, it's far enough away from Stockholm to get away from the city noise and enjoy the sun and swimming on the cliffs.

You should also not forget to t visit Fjäderholmarnas krog which in 2018 was named one of Sweden's best summer restaurants by White Guide.

Little further out in the archipelago, but still within easy sailing distance, lies the island of Grinda. The whole island is a nature reserve and there are many cosy beaches on the island where you can swim, sunbathe and enjoy the beautiful archipelago scenery.

The island is also perfect for hiking and one of the best trails is the Grinda Trail! In addition to nature, the island also offers a shop, kiosk, inn and farm shop.

Style Sandhamn is always a safe bet! The island's location just inside the sea makes sailors and boaters flock here from Stockholm's ports. The island is a paradise if you want to enjoy a genuine archipelago community with rugged cliffs and beautiful beaches.

The harbour is buzzing with life and there are plenty of taverns, restaurants and shops. But if you leave the harbour area, you'll soon find peaceful walks along white beaches and pine forests.

West Coast, Best Coast, Front page of Sweden.... A dear child has many names. It's not without reason that the West Coast is the Swedes' favourite holiday destination.

With its stunning scenery, salty sea baths, sun-drenched cliffs and fresh seafood, the West Coast is hard to beat. The West Coast also has a wide range of activities and attractions to offer: go fishing, go on a seal safari or visit a lovely spa, the choice is yours.

Strax north of Gothenburg you'll find the sailing town of Marstrand. With Sweden's largest guest harbour and the GKSS Match Cup Sweden, Marstrand is definitely considered the sailing mecca of Sweden.

Beyond that, Marstrand also offers a historic yet vibrant setting where you can stroll through small alleys and visit the spectacular fortress. In addition, Marstrand has stunning scenery and there are hiking trails where you can walk with a great view of the Western Sea.

Smögen is undoubtedly the most famous tourist destination on the Bohusk Coast! It is a genuine archipelago community where the atmosphere and unique buildings are well preserved. If you want to taste the seafood of the west coast, Smögen is also an ideal destination for that, as the country's second largest fish auction is located there!

This is where the fishing boats land their catch, which you can then pick up in the fish shops around the corner. For shopping, Smögenbryggan is also ideal as it's teeming with cafés and shops!

The Western Islands

The Western Isles is a destination for true nature lovers. Here you can moor in one of the peaceful bays to enjoy an evening swim and watch the sun set on the horizon. The nature and wildlife on and around the island is also fantastic and if you're lucky you might spot porpoises and seals.

For the more comfortable sailor there is also a guest harbour to moor in with associated facilities and if you are looking for something good to drink and eat the terrace of the Väderöarnas inn is recommended.

How much does it cost to rent a boat in Sweden?

How much it costs to rent a boat in Sweden depends entirely on the type of boat you want, the condition of the boat and the size of the boat. But generally speaking, you can expect to pay from 300€ per day and upwards for a sailing boat.

For a slightly larger motorboat that you can sleep in, prices usually start from 400€ per day and go up.

What type of boat should I hire

When you set off to sail between the cosy coastal communities of Sweden, it's a good idea to choose the right type of boat for your personal preferences:

If you want an authentic sailing experience and see the journey itself as the most important part of the experience, we advise you to rent a sailboat. This will give you the opportunity to cruise between the islands and hoist the sails yourself for an authentic experience. Or why not soak up the sun on the foredeck and take a dip!

Traveling on a stricter schedule but still want to hit as many destinations as possible? Then renting a motorboat or a ribbed boat is optimal! With a motorboat or rowboat you can cover long distances quickly and therefore reach many destinations in a short time!

Compared with Norway, the Swedish climate is usually less rainy and more continental. It is colder in winter and warmer and sunnier in summer than in the neighbouring country. The Baltic Sea has a limited moderating capacity. The westerlies, (mild and humid winds) are partially blocked by the Scandinavian Mountains.Northern Sweden lies in the Land off the Midnight Sun and so has continuous daylight during part of the summer. Southern Sweden never has continuous daylight, though it averages 19 hours of daylight a day in midsummer. In winter, Sweden has similar periods of continuous darkness.July temperatures in Sweden average 13 to 17°C. Winter’s duration also varies depending on the area, from three months in the far south to nine months in Lapland. Snow covers the ground in southern Sweden usually from December to April. In winter temperatures range from – 30 to -3°C. February is usually Sweden’s coldest month.

The Gulf of Bothnia can freeze in winter. Most of the country is icebound in winter, but special icebreaking boats keep the major ports open. On milder periods, in which the westerlies blow, snow melts in a broader area. The winter night sky often becomes enriched with brilliant displays of the aurora borealis.

About Sweeden

Why is Sweeden a good sailing destination?

When one thinks of Sweden, vast forests, aurora-lit skies, and a rich tapestry of history come to mind. Yet, its maritime treasures remain one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. With Yachting.Rent, we unveil why Sweden stands as a nautical paradise for sailors seeking an immersive experience.

Sweden’s extensive coastline is an intricate dance of land and sea, with over 30,000 islands shaping its East coast alone. From the Stockholm archipelago, a mesmerizing maze of islands offering secluded coves and pristine beaches, to the rugged beauty of the Bohuslän coast in the West, every stretch offers a unique sailing adventure. Coupled with the long summer days where the sun barely sets, sailors are treated to extended hours of exploration under a soft, golden light.

Beyond the coastline, Sweden’s inland presents a myriad of lakes and waterways, like Lake Vänern and Lake Mälaren, offering a different kind of sailing tranquility. Here, surrounded by dense forests and historic towns, the waters reflect the serene beauty of the Swedish landscape, providing a tranquil retreat from the vastness of the open sea.

But what truly sets Sweden apart is its harmonious blend of nature and culture. As you sail through its waters with Yachting.Rent, you’re not just navigating a route but journeying through time. Anchor near ancient Viking settlements, explore quaint fishing villages, or moor by vibrant cities like Stockholm or Gothenburg. Each stopover adds a new layer to the Swedish narrative.

In essence, Sweden offers a sailing odyssey that goes beyond just the thrill of the voyage. It promises a journey where each ripple tells tales of ancient seafarers, each gust carries the scent of dense forests, and each horizon beckons with the magic of the North. With Yachting.Rent, uncover the reasons why Sweden is not just a good, but a spectacular sailing destination.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Sweeden

Sweden, with its myriad islands and tranquil waters, offers a diverse sailing experience. At Yachting.Rent, we often encounter the pivotal question: In the heart of Scandinavia, should one opt for a sailing boat or a catamaran? Let’s navigate through the choices to find your perfect match.

A sailing boat in Sweden offers an authentic maritime experience. The slender design and deep hull of these boats are ideal for the varied depths of Swedish waters, from navigating the narrow channels between islands in the archipelagos to journeying into deeper Baltic sea territories. The traditional charm of a sailing boat, combined with its agility, provides an intimate connection to the water. It’s perfect for those who want to feel every pulse of the sea and weave effortlessly through Sweden’s maritime tapestry.

Conversely, the catamaran stands as a symbol of luxury and stability on Swedish waters. With its wide deck and expansive interiors, catamarans offer a level of comfort unparalleled by other vessels. The dual-hull design ensures smooth sailing, even in choppier waters, making it ideal for families or larger groups. Moreover, its shallow draft is perfect for anchoring in Sweden’s secluded bays or closer to the shores of its many islands. With panoramic views and ample space, catamarans provide an opulent Swedish sailing experience.

Yachting.Rent prides itself on matching sailors with their perfect vessel. Whether you’re seeking the romantic allure of a traditional sailing boat or the luxurious embrace of a catamaran, we ensure your Swedish sailing journey captures the essence of this remarkable destination. Together, let’s chart a course through Sweden’s waters, where every choice leads to unforgettable memories.

Borrow A Boat is the best place to find and rent boats of all sorts, from a canal and riverboat across Europe to a sailing boat, motorboat, catamaran across North America, the Mediterranean, Caribbean and further afield, along with some of the world's most impressive superyachts and luxury yacht charters.

Boats or Yachts Available For Rent Or Charter In Sweden

Where it comes to chartering or renting boats in Sweden below is a list of the typical types of boats that you can hire on Borrow A Boat with a description of the boat type. If you can't find the individual boat charter you are looking for when you do a search in [location name] it's worthwhile searching nearby locations as your chosen boat type might be available nearby.

When searching a geographical area on Borrow A Boat you can filter by the below boat types. There is also the option to further filter your searches by price, the number of guests, cabins or bathrooms, what year the boat or sailing yacht was launched, the boat length and the boat manufacturer.

Sailboat: From €120/£100/$135 a day up to whatever you can afford, monohull sailing yachts are fun to sail at all points of the wind and an affordable way to get around if your island hopping or finding your own secluded coves or sandy beaches along with longer cruises. Sizes range from those for a couple or small family to a full sized luxury charter yacht.

Catamaran: Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious, with quick sailing performance, and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the staterooms as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.

Power Catamaran: These types of boats are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced skipper.

Luxury Yacht: Luxury yacht charters are available for either a sailing yacht (sailboat), catamaran or motorboat and will have a crew and host/hostess on hand to cater for whatever your needs are along with a skipper who will have a detailed knowledge of your cruising area. On a crewed yacht charter of this kind you get to create your own personal itinerary and will have far greater range than on other boats which allows for lots of variety in how you travel and what you do.

Superyacht: A superyacht or sometimes called mega yacht are boats which are least 24 metres (79 feet) in length up to 180 metres (590 feet) and can either be sailing yachts (sailboats) or motorboats. These types of boats are most frequently found in the Med of Caribbean and due to their size they will have a large chartering area and can typically pick you up from whatever location you require rather than you being required to get to a set marina to start your charter. They are fully crewed with professional staff who will cater for your every need along with a skipper who will have extensive knowledge of your chosen cruising areas.

Motorboat: This covers a wide variety of boats from a motor yacht with cabins to a private boat trip for a fishing trip but all of the these are comfortable seagoing boats with a kick of speed should you want to cover a bigger distance on the day.

RIB: Very much day boats for fishing and day cruising, RIBs are a lot of fun for a day afloat. They can be very quick and are great should you be in a town on holiday and fancy seeing the coast or finding secluded sandy beaches to get away from it all.

Captained Yacht Charter or Bareboat

When it comes to boat rental or yacht charter in Sweden you typically have two choices - bareboat yacht rental or captained yacht charter.

When using Borrow A Boat you can filter all boat searches to be with or without a captain depending on what you are looking for and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your boat rental.

Captained Charter: A captained yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications before hand. For a monohull sailing yacht you will pay €120/£100/$135 plus a day extra for the captain, as well as their food and a tip at the end.

When you get to a luxury yacht or superyacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of boat rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases captains will also be the yacht or boat owners (typically day trips) which means they will know all the best secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a captain as well and prices will vary depending on the type of boat.

Bareboat Yacht Charter: For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the boat while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can captain these boats (typically up to 54 feet/16.5 metres in length) yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Yacht In Sweden

If you are on a gulet or captained yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht out of Sweden. This is also the case where you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the local islands or beaches.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of Sweden, these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat rental before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a captain then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.
