After the success of the original Cheinz design in 2011, Mirage Radio Yachts has recently released the new Cheinz 2.

Mirage Radio Yachts, the IOM ‘Cheinz 2’ is a modification of the original Cheinz that was launched for the IOM Worlds in West Kirby in 2011, a design that performed incredibly well at the championship having been sailed only twice before the event, and never with the small rigs.

\images\cheinz2-1

Differences between the two designs is that he has reduced the sheerline to take away the bulk of the original and reduce windage. The Cheinz 2 has a new fin and rudder with reduced drag. The winch is now under the deck in a new 3D produced mount under a new deck hatch, this has resulted in a centralizing of the weight at the pitching moment. A beneficial result. This has led to there being no need for a deck opening on the foredeck.

The original Cheinz was one of the most popular designs in Australia in the years after its launch and demand for the new Cheinz 2 is strong with five boats already built with the first headed to a new owner in Perth while others will head overseas to the USA, New Zealand & China.

Mirage now offers a number of IOM designs alongside the Cheinz 2 which include the popular Panda (pictured below) which made its debut in China last year and the Nitro design which was recently first & second at the 2019 Nordic Championships sailed by Soren Andresen & Torvald Klem.

Panda

Decided to design a new boat based on ideas I had that incorporated in some of the past designs but also took a slightly different tack.

What has evolved is a design that I think will be something that will suit all conditions but also at its peak in A rig, which in most areas is the rig used most of the time.

Slightly fuller in the bow with rounded sections and the stern is also a bit wider.

It's initiation was in the CCOR regatta in China last month. Soeren Andresen (Den), and myself attended along with Zyvonko Jelicich , Graham Bantock and skippers from Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, as well as the local contingent. Unfortunately the Japanese skippers plans got skuppered by a typhoon, so they could not attend.

With our two boat in parts when I arrived, and working into the night we got Soeren's A and B rig finished and my A rig.

Both boats launched for the first race and they performed well and showed promise. This was later displayed when on the last day Soeren was the leading points scorer. He showed improvement each day. Final result was Soeren in 3rd place and myself in 7th.

The two boats were sold to local skippers after the event and should be the forerunners of a fleet of Panda's in China.

Orders are now being taken for the Panda.

Key Features

  • New fin and rudder
  • Lower freeboard to allow the rig to be placed lower in the boat which aids stability
  • Screw lid pot to contain the receiver and battery. Because of this inclusion the winch is now in front of the mast.
  • Detail improvements include adjustable rudder pushrod
  • Available in a range of 8 colours, 7 being RAL colours and the other is the Team Mirage green as shown on the Nitro in the photos.

  • Plans are now available for the Corbie 5 . A "woodie" IOM for those who like to do their own thing. A set of full size stations printed on two sheets of A4 paper are included in the kit along with a very extensive manual which includes building instructions and tips, a tuning section, and maintenance hints. Also includes a list of suppliers. This manual was as a result of the work of Ian Dundas in the UK who has been a great help in this project. The cost of the kit is $115.00AUD. Laser cut stations can be purchased from a company called SLEC in the UKat an additional cost. This does save a lot of work and is more precise when setting up the building platform. Great entry-level boat

Posted by Shawn Prigmore on 14th Nov 2016

Very happy with this boat so far, it sails well right out of the box. Very easy assembly, all you have to do is rig the mast, booms, and sails. Instructions can be a little vague, but there are numerous guides on the net to help. The radio leaves ssomthing to be desired, but you can't expect a spektrum system at this price. Highly recommended first boat.

“Lipstick”: The Latest 3d Printed RG65

Introducing “lipstick”, the development continues…..

Introducing the latest RG65 from the combined efforts of Bill Hagerup and Selwyn Holland.

rg 65 sailboat

In fact this is an updated variation of the “Shrink” series that I have been sailing here in Australia. The “Glass Lady” was the last prototype in the series and can be viewed elsewhere in the site.

rg 65 sailboat

So what is different?

Mainly on the construction side:

  • a slightly thicker hull for resilience (added 20g). The “Glass Lady” has had no problems on the water but I have had feedback from those constructing their own that during the building process they occasionally cracked something while cutting. Easy to fix at the time but an experiment with hull thicknesses totally solved the problem anyway. All part of the ongoing research and exposure of what we have learnt on the way. Hopefully others will be able to start in a more advanced position than what we did.
  • Some minor changes to how the internal running gear fits in. The original is proving very efficient and this just added a bit to it.
  • The main change was the position of the mast/keel case . This was moved back 10 mm  and seems to be a slight improvement on balance/performance particularly in the heavier chop. Time will tell. The “Glass Lady” is a fast and very competitive RG and “Lipstick” is feeling just as good and so far a bit better in short chop, stronger breezes, yet still very fast in the lighter conditions. Time will tell, I can hardly wait to get it to some regattas.
  • The addition of a slightly heavier 3d printed bulb and very stiff 3d printed keel to be used at those fast and furious events. As a side note, I started using a hydro-dynamically efficient 3d printed bulb a while back more as a dare to see if it could be done. It went so well that I have not bothered to take it off. I have seen no disadvantage at all compared to standard lead only bulbs and so much easier to make.
  • Nothing was done to the outside surface of this model. We have discovered that the fine matte finish is no hindrance to performance and is very resilient to bumps and scraps, definitely superior to paint. So we just leave it as it is. The colour is within the printed PLA, not on the surface.

The initial trials have gone very well and this will now be my personal racing craft.

Enjoy the images.

Selwyn Holland.

Any questions can be sent to [email protected]. Be patient, I get to them as a soon as I can. I will say I am staggered and heartened by the amount of interest and the quality of the questions coming through.

Latest update:

The more I sail it, the faster it seems to want to go. The sails are a standard jib and a rather radical double luff single sheet main. The combination of both of these seems to easily keep with and often beat both the best RG65 swing rigs and now the new A+ rig on the latest DF. The A+ has a larger surface area than the maximum Rg 65 rig.

Results from our latest Club Championship round included 2 6 1 1 2 5 1 from a strong fleet of 11 yachts. That was a comfortable overall win for the round. It is rarely out of the top three in club sailing and championships.

I can hardly wait to get it to a major RG65 competition. An earlier design won the Australia Day Regatta last year in Sydney.

THE AMYA

AMYA Boat Classes

The Ten Rater is a medium-sized yacht with a reputation for speed. This development class is restricted by a simple formula of waterline length multiplied by sail area, multiplied by eight, to equal ten or less. As there are few restrictions, the class allows the greatest freedom for development and experimentation. 60-65" long.

The 36/600 has an appearance similar to the Marblehead yachts. This development class is restricted in overall length and sail area. While these yachts are commercially available, their simplicity also makes them a good choice for beginning builders. 36" long, 600 sq. inches sail area.

Also called "M" or "50/800". The Marblehead is a medium-sized yacht providing exciting performance and the ability to handle most sailing conditions if rigged properly. This development class is restricted in overall length and sail area. The Marblehead was considered the leader in the use of advanced construction materials and techniques. 50" long, 800 sq. inches sail area.

The Canterbury J originated in Christchurch, New Zealand, based on the J Class Ranger. A 48 inch Fiberglass hull and lead Keel both made from Class molds. Everything else can be made by the builder. Total weight of ready to sail boat is 14lbs 5oz.

The Columbia 42 is a semi-scale 12 meter model of the Sparkman and Steven's designed winner of the America's Cup. This boat was generally accepted as the best sailing of the 12's and also the best looking boat on the water.

The CR 914 is based on the original design of the International America's Cup Class. This one design class allows no variations in hulls, spars, sails or replacement parts. 36" (914mm) long, 658 sq. in. sail area, 6.25 lb displacement.

The DragonFlite 95 is a Restricted One Design boat that is meant to compete within a strict set of rules to ensure a true test of a skipper.s ability to tune their boat and race it well.

The DragonForce 65 is the fastest growing class of RC sailboats in the U.S. The boat has earned this distinction by being a great one-design sailing boat while being the least expensive ready-to-sail boat on the market. At around $300 for a boat with radio and receiver and about 2 hours of assembly and you're on the water.

Based on a 1962-63 vintage design for a full-size International 12 Meter. This medium-sized yacht's hull must be initially purchased from a licensed builder. Decks and sails are strictly controlled, purchased or made from scratch. Almost all other equipment is up to the owner. Approx 58" long.

One Design Class sanctioned in 2002. The Fairwind is built by One Manufacturer. The Kyosho Fairwind are 36" (900mm) long replicas of International Offshore Racing (IOR) yachts with cabins.

Sanctioned in 2006. Low cost, fun, easy to build class that puts to rest the theory that boats under 30" long don't sail well. 12" long (thus "Footy") is the smallest of the development class yachts.

The Infinity 54 is an original design expressly for model yacht racing. This one design class allows no variations in either original assembly or replacement parts. 54" long.

Sanctioned in 1998. The International One Metre is the fastest growing class in the world. The rules in this class are identical to those used throughout the globe. The class has a one-design rig and weight minimums, but the hull design is very much developmental. One meter long, with a sail area as large as a Marblehead. 39.37" long (One meter)

The J class yachts are 1/16 scale versions of the original 1930's J-boats only, making it the largest of all the RC yachts. These classic yachts recreate the style of yachting's Golden Era, on a grand but affordable scale. Approx. 85-95" long. The largest class in the AMYA, the "J" boat
