What is an IOM?
It’s a misconception that the International One Metre (IOM) is a model or toy. The IOM is actually not a model of anything (to scale) but a stand-alone, registered and governed class of yacht, internationally recognised and raced in over 30 countries by thousands of sailors. The IOM class is the most popular radio-controlled racing yacht in the world today.
1994 was the first World Title event held in Saint-Cyr, Vienne, France and was swept by three Englishmen, Graham Bantock, Chris Dicks, and Mark Dicks. Since then, only two Australians have sat on the highest step, Craig Smith (1997 & 2005) and Brad Gibson (2007). The current World Champion is Olivier Cohen from France (2022).
Basic Specifications: Hull length: 1 metre Displacement: 4 kgs Draught: 420 mm Sail area: 0.6 m²
The International One Metre World Championships are upon us. Join us in the Gladstone Marina from 18th October - 28th October as the Australian Radio Yachting Association (ARYA) hosts this international event. 76 of the world's best RC sailors from 21 different countries will call Gladstone home for 10 days (or more.) The Gladstone Radio Controlled Yacht Club is proud to be the host club for this global event.
The Gladstone Radio Controlled Yacht Club (GRCYC) is a legacy to all our many members, past and present. The GRCYC sails most Sundays (with the kind permission of the Gladstone Ports Corporation) to the right-hand side of the VMR building, on the commercial jetty in the Gladstone Marina.
From a unique 'overwatch' position, sailors and spectators enjoy unrestricted views of the International One Meter class of yacht against a stunning Gladstone backdrop, While one-design yacht racing is fast-paced and competitive, sportsmanship and fair play have been at the heart of our club since it's 're-birth in 2005 If you are interested, the GRCYC has a complimentary club boat to experience this challenging sport first-hand, come down and see members on site for details.
New members and spectators are most welcome.
