When the wind comes of of the south, we often we sail to Juniper Island, located 3.75 miles away from our dock. We explore the northern bays when a stronger wind comes out of the North.

Most of our sails are two hours from the time we get underway and return to the dock.

Bring your own picnic or arrive 30 minutes early if you’d like to grab food to go from Splash’s menu located right in the marina where we dock. We offer complementary bottled water.

We have a very clean restroom onboard with running water for use while underway.

DOG FRIENDLY

Captain Gideon is a big dog lover. Your dog is invited to join you on your cruise as long as a prong training collar is not used. However, if the dog shows any sign of aggression, it will not be allowed to get on the boat (and will be ordered off it at the closest dock if it is already on).

BRING THE WHOLE FAMILY

Our boat can accommodate up to six guests. Kids are welcome and encouraged, if they’re comfortable, to take the helm!

Our 22 foot Pontoon boats accommodate 8 – 10 people and our 20 foot Pontoon holds 6 – 8 (weight restriction 1,800 pounds per boat).

Kayaks & Canoes

Enjoy the great outdoors by being close to the lake. Our non-motorized boats are perfect for fishing, exercise, nature watching, and paddling to Sand Bar State Park for a picnic and swim. Prices are per craft and double or single kayaks are available.

RIB: Very much day boats for fishing and day cruising, RIBs are a lot of fun for a day afloat. They can be very quick and are great should you be in a town on holiday and fancy seeing the coast or finding secluded sandy beaches to get away from it all.

When it comes to boat rental or yacht charter in Lake Champlain you typically have two choices - bareboat yacht rental or captained yacht charter.

Captained Charter: A captained yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications before hand. For a monohull sailing yacht you will pay €120/£100/$135 plus a day extra for the captain, as well as their food and a tip at the end.

When you get to a luxury yacht or superyacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of boat rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases captains will also be the yacht or boat owners (typically day trips) which means they will know all the best secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a captain as well and prices will vary depending on the type of boat.

Bareboat Yacht Charter: For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the boat while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can captain these boats (typically up to 54 feet/16.5 metres in length) yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Yacht In Lake Champlain

If you are on a gulet or captained yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht out of Lake Champlain. This is also the case where you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the local islands or beaches.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of Lake Champlain, these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

​You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat rental before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a captain then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Rent a boat for cruising the lake, water skiing, boarding or tubing. We have a selection of motor boats sure to fit your needs. Feel like a quieter day, rent a kayak or fishing boat. Rentals are available June thru August for day use. September, October and November rentals are available with advance reservations only. All reservations are by phone, 518.962.4356, only.

Valcour Boat Rentals

Located on scenic and historic Lake Champlain, we offer a variety of motorboat rentals for visitors or locals to enjoy our beautiful area and soak up the sun. 

Our boats are located in Snug Harbor, a protected bay just on the Western side of Valcour Island in Plattsburgh, New York.  Enjoy a day on the water and the beaches of Valcour in style with one of our pontoon style boats!

Our lake also shares state lines with Vermont, with only a 30 minute boat ride to Burlington.  Lake Champlain is home to a number of islands, including our closest in proximity, Valcour Island.

 Valcour was the site of several wars in the American Revolution as well as the War of 1812 and there are still shipwrecks and cannonballs that live on the bottom of our lake.

There is also a legendary lake monster named Champy that has made this lake his home for centuries, but don't worry - He's friendly!

There’s less ice than ever on Oneida Lake, and it’s only going to get worse

One frigid day in the winter of 1965, Don Therre, 11, trudged alone across the frozen surface of Oneida Lake, dragging behind him a heavy steel bar that ice anglers call a spud. Toes growing numb inside his cheap pack boots, he raised the spud and hacked a hole in the thick ice.

“You can do that when you’re young!” Therre recently joked.

Now, at 69, he uses a hand drill with an augur to punch through the ice—when there is ice.

“Back in those days we’d get quite a bit of ice, not so much like today,” he said. “Two foot, close to 30 inches, right in that range. That was a given by February.”

Generations of Therre’s family have lived on Oneida Lake for 131 years. Ice is in his blood. But lately he’s noticed that the ice is getting thinner. Two years ago, his favorite fishing spots had a foot of ice. Last year, nine inches. This season, a mere five and half inches (the safe minimum is four).

“For fishable ice, it’s the worst I’ve ever seen,” he said. “The biggest thing to me in recent years is ice comes on and breaks up, and then on again. It doesn’t get a chance to build at all.”

Therre’s observations closely mirror a long-term trend documented since 1975 by scientists at Cornell University’s Biological Field Station in Bridgeport: Oneida Lake’s seasonal ice cover is shrinking at a rate of one day per year, and global warming is accelerating the trend.

“You can expect the ice season to get shorter,” said the field station’s director, Lars Rudstam, professor of aquatic and fisheries science at Cornell. “And then at some point you’re going to have intermittent ice—ice opening up for a while, closing up again.”

Oneida Lake is in a transition period, like an ice cube bobbing in a cup on hot summer day. Rudstam speculates that it could be ice free by mid-century. So what does that mean for the people, economy, and ecosystem now struggling to adapt?

Central New York is the state’s most popular freshwater fishing destination according to a 2017 study commissioned by the Department of Environmental Conservation . Anglers spend more time fishing here than the Finger Lakes, Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, or Lake Champlain.

Smack in the middle of this fishing mecca is Oneida Lake, the largest lake wholly within New York’s borders and the state’s walleye capital. It’s the main reason why anglers in 2017 dropped nearly $50 million here on bait, lodging, groceries, restaurants, and guide services.

Most of that money flows in the warmer months, but winter provides a crucial second season that many small local businesses rely on to stay afloat. That winter boost isn’t so reliable anymore.

“Never seen anything like it in 40 years. It’s crazy,” said Al Dahar.

Dahar and his two brothers run Mickey’s Live Bait & Tackle in North Syracuse, an Oneida Lake institution since 1950. Twenty years ago ice fishing accounted for a quarter of their business, Dahar said. Now it’s less than 10 percent.

“Let’s put it this way, I don’t look forward to it anymore, and I don’t plan on it anymore, and the only way I’m going to order ice tackle is if I see people out there,” said Dahar, adding that he saw ice fishermen on only one weekend this season.

“That was it,” he said, “we can’t depend on it.”

Scott Masucci, owner of Lakeside Outfitters, a tackle shop just down the road from Lewis Point, is in the same boat. Around one-third of his annual sales come during ice fishing season, he said, and this season was by far the worst.

“It really wasn’t a season,” Masucci said. “We had about a week of fishing.”

Some of his customers went to the Finger Lakes instead. Most didn’t fish at all, especially those who travel from out of state to catch walleye through Oneida’s ice.

“Guys are fed up,” Masucci said. “They don’t want to put money into something if they don’t know it’s going to happen. We need the out of towners to make their way back.”

Oneida Lake’s hospitality sector is also reeling. In 2019, Tobi and Donnie Carbone opened Carbone’s Beachside hotel and restaurant in Sylvan Beach. Between the Covid pandemic and weak winters, it’s been a rough start.

“We rely heavily on the ice for the hotel because we get tons of ice fishermen,” Tobi said. “But this year has been horrible. Last year was bad too, but this year, just terrible.”

And it’s not just mom and pop joints that are suffering. Comfort Suites in Cicero caters to anglers all year round. Ice fishermen usually fill most of the hotel’s 65 rooms in winter.

“I probably could count on one hand this winter how many fishermen came,” said Danielle Escalera, Comfort Suites operations manager. “It killed us, we hardly had anybody.”

Don Therre drilled his first ice hole this season on Jan. 19. The ice soon broke up, refroze, broke up again. Then February’s record-shattering heat wave killed whatever ice was left.

Jack Henke, author of four books on Oneida Lake history, remembers when February thaws were welcome respites from bone-chilling cold, not the potential season spoilers they are today.

“We’d look forward to that because there’d be 20 inches of ice,” he said. “Let it be 65 degrees, big deal. You’d fish in absolute comfort. Those days are gone.”

In February, the South Shore Association of Oneida Lake canceled what would’ve been its 71st annual ice fishing derby. Bad conditions forced dozens of organizations across upstate NY to do the same, starving sporting clubs of critical funding and strangling cultural life in many rural communities.

“This is what keeps our club alive,” said Scott Lalonde, chairman of the Tupper Lake Northern Challenge, after he cancelled the popular derby for the first time in 24 years due to sketchy ice.

“We just gave the prizes away for entering,” he said. “Of course, we lose our shirt doing it.”

As grim as things appear, some people are already adapting. For two winters in a row now, Nick Sokolowski, who operates Soco Outdoors Sportfishing guide service, cancelled all his Oneida ice fishing trips and shifted them to other lakes.

“Being in Central New York, you have different species to target, which is really nice,” Sokolowski said. “If it’s a beautiful winter day and we’re in a boat on Cayuga catching a box full of perch, not many people can complain about that.”

Therre even bought a second boat—a winter rat of sorts—to take advantage of Oneida’s weird new winter open water season. Jigging for walleye from a boat in the dead of winter is something 11-year-old Don Therre would’ve found less plausible than the 1969 moon landing.

“And I’m fine with that,” Therre said. “If it was 60 degrees next week and the ice was off, you can bet your life I’d be in the boat.”

The recreational and economic costs of an increasingly iceless Oneida Lake are plain to see. But there’s some upside, at least in the short term.

For one, half of Oneida’s annual perch harvest is caught through the ice according to Cornell’s data. No ice means more perch live to see another day.

The same logic applies to walleye, said Tony VanDeValk, coordinator of the fisheries program at Cornell’s Oneida Lake field station. Walleyes not caught during a normal ice fishing season will still be swimming around during the open water season.

That’s great news for fair weather anglers and those with boats. But angler harvest is just one of the many variables regulating fish populations, including water temperature, oxygen level, food availability, invasive species, and so on.

Zoe Almeida, senior research associate at Cornell, points to a growing body of research showing the negative effects of mild winters on spawning and recruitment, or survivability of young fish, for many of Oneida Lake’s important sport fish species.

The most recent is a study by Wisconsin researchers published last month . It shows that rapidly shrinking ice cover and warming water temperatures in 194 lakes in the upper Midwest are causing walleyes to spawn earlier, disrupting the delicately balanced food web.

Cornell’s Lars Rudstam says similar trends also threaten Oneida Lake’s walleye population by flipping the table on seasonal predator-prey cycles. Alewife, a walleye prey species that normally dies off in winter, will thrive as Oneida warms.

“And that’s a problem, because alewife are really good at feeding on larval fish, particularly walleye,” said Rudstam. “I would expect that within a couple of decades we’ll have a lake with alewife and bass, and some rather big walleyes, but not as many.”

Oneida Lake is but one piece of data pointing to a global trend: ice is melting at an unprecedented pace— Himalayan glaciers, polar ice caps, Alaska’s permafrost. In February, the Great Lakes reached a historic low of 2.7% ice coverage according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration .

Until we get control over our greenhouse gas emissions, there’s little that can be done to mitigate the changes in store for Oneida Lake, said Rudstam, adding that it doesn’t help to be “alarmist.”

“Think about Oneida Lake being more like lakes in southern Indiana or reservoirs in North Carolina,” he said. “People are out fishing in wintertime in their boats. You have to change, you have to adapt. You’re not going to kill the fishery in Oneida Lake.”
