Ragamuffin II Whitsundays History

Ragamuffin is an overnight sailing boat in the Whitsunday Islands that offers a 3 day and 2 night tour for guests to explore and sail!

Ragamuffin Sailing

Ragamuffin is an ex sailing maxi yacht, which measures 21m, or 70ft, in length. Ragamuffin was originally designed for the Admiral's Cup an international yachting regatta, which took place off the Southern Coast of England. She was designed by Australian Ben Lexcan, known for this design of a previous Admiral's cup winner, the Mercedes III.

Ragamuffin raced in the 7th Admiral's Cup in 1969, where she narrowly lost to America. While Ragamuffin dominated the beginning of the race and won the 225 nautical mile channel race, she lost momentum when the wind died down near the end of the race and the crew had to depend on their motor. In a series of unfortunate events that involved loss of power, an 'all standing' gybe, and some bad timing, Ragamuffin lost the lead allowing American to grab the title. She went on racing afterwards, but never experienced the same drama that came along with the Admiral's Cup.

Ragamuffin was skippered by Syd Fischer, who to this day is a well known racer, and had raced in a total of 8 Admiral Cup campaigns. Now in his 90s, he recently christened Ragamuffin 100, another racing yacht.

Ragamuffin now sails the Coral Sea in the Whitsundays with 13 passengers at a time. She was recently refitted in 2011 and offers guests the option to choose from open double berths or single bunks, and has two bathrooms on board. The open plan concept allows passengers to feel comfortable with space to roam around. Up top you will find her large masts, complete with billowing sails that were once used to race in the Admiral's Cup.

**Please note this tour is no longer in operation. For similar options, please refer to  Small Group Sailing ,  Backpackers (18-35's) , or ask one of our friendly consultants.

There are three Ragamuffins racing to Hobart, not just two

Ragamuffin 100, with 88-year-old owner Syd Fischer on board, and the TP52 Ragamuffin, helmed by his grandson Brenton Fischer, have receievd a lot of pre-race publicity. But there is a third Ragamuffin the race as this story from the Rolex Sydney Hobart media team's Jim Gale explains:

She was one of the greatest maxi yachts of her day; winning line honours three times, first as Bumblebee IV in 1979, and then as Ragamuffin in 1988 and 1990 and she last raced to Hobart in 1993.

For the last 20 years she has been thrilling charterers in Queensland, but in 2015, Maxi Ragamuffin has been painstakingly brought back to full racing trim. On Boxing Day spectators can marvel again as the 36 year-old German Frers design punches her way out through the Heads, bringing back so many memories of one of the great eras of this remarkable race.

The big boats fighting it out for line honours in the Rolex Sydney Hobart have always held an irresistible glamour. These days it’s the mesmerizing speed of a Wild Oats XI , the jaw-dropping acceleration of Comanche .  Lithe, athletic, not an ounce of fat to be found anywhere in their exotic carbon-fibre hulls, these giant blue-water skiffs epitomize the modern, professional aura of elite sport in 21 st century Australia.

In the 80’s and 90’s, the age of the great aluminium hulled maxis, it was all about resilience and power. The stately American Nirvana may have wrapped that power in Newport Rhode Island elegance; the pretty Siska in brash West Australian bravado, but it was still raw power.

When John Kahlbetzer‘s Bumblebee IV burst onto Sydney Harbour in 1979, she oozed brute force.  A prize fighter, uninterested in a points decision when a knockout would do.

These big, heavy maxis roamed the world, from one big race to the next. They were little ships. Be it Valetta, Monaco or the CYCA marina in Rushcutters Bay, we plebs would gaze in wonder at the wealth, and yes, a different kind of power, that these giants represented.

“She is a very powerful boat, and she bites if you let her get away from you,” muses Graham ‘Scooter’ Eaton , Maxi Ragamuffin’s tireless boat manager come skipper. “She is a tank, state of the art in her day, no compromises.  But a cruising boat compared with today’s V70s.”

Kahlebetzer won line honours in 1979, then took her overseas to beat the best in the world. In 1984 Syd Fischer bought her, called her Ragamuffin , and campaigned her in six Hobarts, winning line honours twice; in 1988 and 1990. However, soon the first carbon-fibre maxi, Windward Passage II, would bring the curtain down on the aluminium age.

It has been a mammoth job getting Maxi Ragamuffin back to racing trim. “She’s been fully stripped and rebuilt from stem to stern,” Eaton says “We took 95 percent of the deck gear off.  All the winches were stripped and we found that 50 to 90 percent of each winch had to be rebuilt and there were no spare parts available anymore. Everything had to be custom made in Sydney.

It hasn’t come cheap.  Keith Batt, the CEO of  Nant (Whisky) Distilling Company and Maxi Ragamuffin’s owner, thinks there hasn’t been much change out of a million dollars. Buying the boat was the cheap part. But he has no regrets.

“It’s been just incredible, the enthusiasm and passion that everyone involved has brought to this project, which started as a marketing idea.  I do some sailing and I asked if we could sponsor a boat in the race.  When they came back with the cost, I thought we might just as well buy a whole boat.  I googled boats for sale and there was Maxi Ragamuffin .  I flew up to Queensland straight away. “

For Batt, his attitude to the boat is similar with his approach to whiskey making.  “We make our whiskey in traditional ways, in restored stone buildings, built by convicts in the 1820s.  We like tradition.

“This boat represents something about Australia.  Everywhere she goes people come to see her because they remember her and tell their kids about her.”

And in keeping with the whiskey tradition, Maxi Ragamuffin will carry a very unusual cargo: two barrels of whiskey will mature on the way to Hobart.

“In the past they used to mature whiskey by putting it in barrels as ships’ ballast,” Batt explains.  “They discovered that this gives the whiskey lovely colour.”

Of the Rolex Sydney Hobart, Batt says: “We’re going to be trying hard, she is stunning to sail. To see our helmsman, Roger Snell, put her through her paces is amazing. He throws her around like 20 footer.  She loves going upwind.”

The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race starts on Boxing Day, December 26, at 1pm AEDT and will be broadcast live on the Seven Network throughout Australia, webcast live to a global audience on Yahoo!7 and live streamed via mobile.

VIDEO: Syd Fischer’s new Ragamuffin 100

Published on October 1st, 2014 by Editor -->

(October 1, 2014) – The brand new hull of Syd Fischer’s new Ragamuffin 100 arrived at Sydney City Marine in Sydney, Australia under the cover of darkness in the early hours of this morning, her sheer size causing one bystander to comment, “The eagle has landed.”

Fischer’s team will work quickly now to ready the 100 foot boat for the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, the 70th edition of the race. The first big job is to attach the heavily modified deck of the previous Ragamuffin 100 (which took line honours in the 2011 race as Investec Loyal) and add the new keel.

Water ballasted, the virtually new super maxi boasts twin rudders, a 6 metre beam, 6m draft and will be refitted with the rig from the previous Ragamuffin. Fischer, who took line honours in the 1988 and 1990 Hobart races, with an overall win in 1992, aboard previous Ragamuffins, is hoping this is the yacht to secure him the trifecta of line honours wins.

Being 87 years has not slowed the yachtsman down. He has eagerly anticipated the arrival of the new hull, designed by Andy Dovell and himself and built at Innovation Composites in South Nowra on the NSW south coast.

ragamuffin 3 yacht

“The whole team has put a massive amount of work into the design and build of Ragamuffin 100, including a completely new hull,” Fischer said today.

Due to launch the yacht in early December, Fischer, who will clock up his 47th Hobart race this year, will have little time to get the yacht up to speed. He and the crew have not been idle though, sailing the slightly smaller Ragamuffin 90 to successive line honours victories this year in the Rolex South China Sea Race and the Okinawa Tokai Race, in which they also broke the race record.

But Fischer, who has been under the pump time wise many times with new boats in his long yachting career, is taking it in his stride. “We are all on track to for the 70th Rolex Sydney Hobart and line honours is our goal,” he stated.

However, the new Ragamuffin 100 can expect a battle with at least four other super maxis in what is sure to be the most gripping line honours stoush in years.

On the Australian side, competition will come from Bob Oatley’s record equalling seven-time line honours winner, Wild Oats XI, the only yacht to take the treble of line honours, record and overall win twice. Built in 2005, the Mark Richards skippered yacht has been extensively modified throughout the years to stay with the times, and is the reigning champion.

Anthony Bell, one of only two yachtsmen to snatch line honours victory from Wild Oats XI (Investec Loyal in 2011), purchased the former Speedboat/Rambler 100 last year. Purportedly the fastest yacht in the world, Bell practically rebuilt the yacht after the keel fell off and it capsized in 2011, but he ultimately finished second to Oats last year. Recent modifications could make a difference to the six year old yacht.

On the international front, the most exciting expected entry is American Jim Clark’s new Comanche. The latest in technology has not been spared to create the colourful newly launched 100 foot yacht. Clark had in mind breaking all the world’s major race records when he commissioned the yacht by renowned French designers Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot-Prévost (VPLP) and rising name, Guillaume Verdier.

The yacht is said to be a development of Macif, the speed record breaking Vendée Globe winner. Adding to the allure is skipper Ken Read of America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race fame. Clearly, the message to adversaries is, “Be Afraid”.

A second USA entry is RIO 100. Manouch Moshayedi purchased the former Zana/Konica Minolta/Lahana and lengthened it from 98 feet to 100 feet. Looking sharp with a longer bowsprit and new silver/gray paint job, her Californian owner says unless the wind is from behind, their chances in the 628 nautical mile race are minimal against the canting keelers.

Entries in the Rolex Sydney Hobart 2014 close on Friday 31 October 2014 at 1700hrs AEDT. As at this morning, the CYCA had received 74 entries and is expecting a fleet of up to 130 will make the start on Boxing Day, December 26.

The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2014 Notice of Race is now online at: http://www.rolexsydneyhobart.com/competitors/online-race-entry Report and photos of Ragamuffin 100 by race media. Video by boatson.tv .

RAGAMUFFIN WINS BRITISH SAIL PRIZE

RAGAMUFFIN WINS BRITISH SAIL PRIZE

PLYMOUTH, England, Aug. 12 (UPI)—Ragamuffin, the Australian yacht that won the 605‐mile Fastnet race, was confirmed today as the champion of the 1971 Admiral's Cup sailing series.

Britai however was the winner of the over‐all series, with the United States second.

Ragamuffin, which is owned by Syd Fischer, of Sydney, finished 13th in the channel race and seventh and third in the two inshore races before cruising to a clear victory in the gruelling Fastnet, which ended yesterday.

Ragamuffin, the top yacht in the last series is the first to be champion twice in succession. She had 297 total points, nine more than Belita VII of the Netherlands.

16 Nations Compete

Britain's winning margin over the United States was cut to 43 points in the final placings, subject to declaration—which could take several clays. A record entry of 43 yachts from 16 nations competed in the renewal of the biennial series.

The hosts, who last won in 1965, totaled 825 points to 782 for the United States with Australia's two‐boat team still good enough to take third spot with 719. The Aussies’ fleet was reduced Tuesday when Norman Rydge's Koomooloo lost its rudder in the Irish Sea and had to be towed in.

The British trio all placed in the top 14 in the Fastnet, their last two boats dropping a couple of places from the provisional listings, with Cervantes IV placing secon dbehind Ragamuffin, Argentina was fourth with 680 points. The Netherlands moved into fifth spot, supplanting South Africa.

Syd Fischer’s 90ft Super Maxi yacht Ragamuffin, designed by Dubois , sailed the 656nm race in 42h 41m 20s, averaging around 16 knots with top speeds of 22 knots. Syd Fischer was delighted by not only taking Line Honours but also breaking the record: “It was a good race” said Syd crediting the win to “a good crew and a good boat….we did it by 4 minutes.”

Second across the line was the Banuls designed MC²60 Mach 2, launched earlier this year by McConaghy Boats. The 60ft Catamaran, helmed by Raphael Blot, exceeded speeds of 30 knots, beating 2004 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Line Honours winner Ludde Ingvalls’s 90 footer to the finish.

Congratulations to David Ross, KukuKERchu and Patrick Pender, Signal 8. The two Ker 40s came second and third in IRC Division 1. This adds another fantastic result to the list of accolades for global fleet of Ker Design and McConaghy built Ker 40s.

McConaghy Boats’ Jamie Thompson sailed on KukuKERchu: “It was a great race, we had good guys onboard including our trimmer from the Volvo Ocean Racing Team Camper and crew from the Kiwi teams Black Match and Waka Racing. The first night was survival conditions, reaching speeds of over 20 knots, the boat handled really well and we enjoyed some drag racing with the other Ker 40 Signal 8 and with Fling. If it wasn’t for damage to our kites we could have won, the boat just flies.”

Well done to Ragamuffin, Mach 2, KukuKERchu, Signal 8 and their crews.

Video: Scallywag in near miss during Sydney Hobart warm-up

The Ragamuffin 100 racing yacht Scallywag had a near miss earlier this week (December 13) during the warm-up for the Rolex Sydney Hobart regatta.

The 14-mile SOLAS Big Boat Challenge is traditionally used as a shakedown for the main event and it almost turned sour when a maritime patrol boat and a spectator vessel got a little too close to the action, as this dramatic aerial footage shows:

Eyewitness reports claim that Scallywag was inches away from colliding with the two vessels, with her skipper having to thread the 30.48 metre sailing yacht through a highly congested area.

Despite this hair-raising turn of events, Scallywag went on to claim third place in the SOLAS Big Boat Challenge, with Wild Oats XI coming home first for the ninth time in her highly decorated career.

David Witt, skipper of Scallywag , later explained the close call to the Sydney Morning Herald : “I wasn't planning on going through the gap — I thought the maritime boat would back up, it's supposed to get out of the way. We spun the roulette wheel and came up with zero. [We were] very, very lucky.”

Recently purchased by Seng Huang Lee, Scallywag is competing at the Australian regatta for the third year running. Having finished third in 2014 and second in the 2015 Sydney Hobart Race , the crew will be hoping to go one better and win the top prize this year. A must-see for anyone taking a superyacht charter in Australia , the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race 2016 gets underway on December 26.

Brand BLOCK ISLAND 40

Model BLOCK ISLAND 40

Production year 1957

Block Island 40 classic sailboat the boat is BILL TRIPP S famous design. The yacht was built by American Boatbuilding co. in East Greenwich RI. Designed by Bill Tripp, Block Island 40 is a classic in every sense, with one of the most perfect sheer lines ever put to paper. Her graceful counter and raked transom turn heads in every harbor. Originally designated as a Vitesse Class yawl and first commissioned in 1957, the BI 40 has been in and out of production up until 1990s. This almost half-century of production is a testament to the timelessness of her design. The BI 40?s speed and ability were recognized by sailors early on and BI 40s won 6 of 11 places in the 1960 Newport to Bermuda Race, I purchased the boat with the intention to learn as i go.

I also own a 32 Ft Bayliner motorboat on Lake Mead Nevada USA , since 2015 & in 2016, took the ASA BASIC KEAL certification on Lake Mead. In 2017 I purchased my sailboat out of Miami and with a captain sailed to Key West. From there I sailed with a Captain and crew on a 5 day trip to Isla Mujeres MX, where the boat has been since. and use the boat for day trips.

Ragamuffin is a crewed charter yacht in the Virgin Islands and has been since 2004.   Previously she was on Lake Champlain for over 10 years, as the yacht “Dash”.  From 1980 to about 1990 she was a crewed charter yacht in the Virgin Islands under the name of “Bagheera”.

Ragamuffin has been extensively remodeled and upgraded in the last eight years.  Complete aft cabin remodel; aft head; complete galley remodel, to increase storage and add new appliances; all exterior plywood walls removed and replaced with teak. The forward head has been remodeled creating 2 heads each head with an en suite shower. New generator; cockpit enclosure; sun awning; chain plates; standing and running rigging replaced; new halyards; oversize winches; complete electrical upgrade with added circuits and more. The teak decks are in the process of being removed and tread master to be installed.

Ragamuffin appears at first to be a CT54 but is considerably bigger than a 1975 model and is noticeably different and slightly larger than a 1983. She had a lead extension of 18 inches added to her keel, making her much better going to weather.  The owner operators have raced her with good results in many classic yacht races.

“Ragamuffin”  has a 4 staterooms and 3 heads each with en suite shower.

Starting forward there is a “V” berth with two single berths. There is shelving port and starboard for books and sliding storage lockers as well. The cabin is nicely appointed with teak joinery.

Moving aft is the guest shower, which is centrally located with separate access for each of the guest staterooms. There is a linen closet to port, shower center, and the head to starboard. The head has a marine toilet, sink, mirror, vanity and storage.

Two guest staterooms lie to port and starboard.  The port guest stateroom features a comfortable double bed with storage beneath and  12 drawers with storage. There is a large opening hatch and 2 opening ports for light and ventilation.

The starboard guest stateroom features over and under berths with the lower berth larger of the two. There are 11 drawers with storage. There is a large opening hatch and 2 opening ports for light and ventilation here as well. Both guest staterooms have doors for added privacy.

The large main salon area is next with light and views provided by the pilothouse design. There is a pullout futon (sofa/bed) to port and chairs to starboard. The joinery work is all in fine teak. CT’s all have a tremendous amount of storage room in various drawers and opening lockers. There are bookshelves galore, as well. Beneath the flooring in the main salon is the engine room. There is a 120hp Ford Lehman diesel engine and a Next Generation 5.5k diesel generator in a sound shield.  The main electrical panel is built into the forward bulkhead.

In the aft section of the main salon is the nav station featuring an opening chart table.

A large sweeping companionway of solid teak completes the salon.

The galley lies behind the companion to port and is well designed and equipped. Opposite to starboard is the dining table with 2 opening ports for ventilation.

Finally all the way aft is the owners stateroom, not as originally built but custom remodeled, with a huge athwartship Queen berth, 6 opening ports and large hatch, numerous lockers and drawers. There is a large hanging locker for clothes as well. To port and forward is the owner’s head, which features a marine toilet, mirror, vanity and shower.

The galley is accessed from behind the companionway with a large counter facing the main salon.

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht screamed 'I will kill you' and threw $100 bills into the water when told he couldn't use a private dock

The owner of a Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee, per CBS8.

The employee said Ajay Thakore mooned and threw cash at him after being told he couldn't use the dock.

Thakore, the CEO of Doctor Multimedia, issued an apology through his public relations team.

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee after being told he couldn't be there, the San Diego-based broadcaster CBS8 reported on March 11.

Joseph Holt, a 21-year-old employee at Marriot Marina in San Diego, told CBS8 that he spotted the yacht sailing into the private dock. The owner, whom CBS8 identified as Ajay Thakore, tried to pick another person up at the dock, Holt said.

"I told him respectfully that he couldn't be there, and I honestly was hoping to have a conversation with him about his cool boat," Holt told CBS8.

In a YouTube video posted by @SM-wc9eq on March 10, a dark blue Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is seen sailing out of a dock. A man in a gray T-shirt, a pair of jeans, and a cap was shown standing on the yacht. The man appeared to be Thakore, per CBS8.

Thakore was shown shouting at Holt. "I will kill you, you know I will kill you!" he can be heard saying multiple times in the video

Thakore was later shown pounding his fist on his palm and pointing his thumb down before telling Holt: "To your face!" Holt was shown responding by pointing his middle finger at Thakore.

"I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird," Holt told CBS8.

Holt said Thakore then took $100 bills from his wallet and threw them at him. He added that Thakore mooned him. This exchange was not shown in the video.

"He was saying I'm nobody, I'm nothing, I work a silly job. He said that he knows people, he has connections, he can change my life and ruin it," Holt said. Holt did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

The San Diego Harbor Police arrived at the marina 10 minutes after Thakore's yacht exited the dock, per CBS8. The Harbor Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

According to Thakore's LinkedIn page , he's the CEO of Doctor Multimedia. The company's website shows that it's a healthcare marketing firm based in San Diego. Thakore appears to go by the name Ace Rogers on Instagram and TikTok, where he's noted as being a professional gambler.

Thakore, through his public relations team, told CBS8 in a statement that his altercation with Holt was "regrettable."

"What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange," the statement said. Thakore did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

Thakore isn't the only CEO who's been called out for threatening another person. In November 2021, an Activision spokesperson told BI that its ex-CEO Bobby Kotick had previously apologized for telling his assistant he would have her killed. The spokesperson added that Kotick's threat was "obviously hyperbolic and inappropriate" and that "he deeply regrets the exaggeration and tone."

In June 2020, Lisa Alexander, the CEO of LaFace Skincare, a cosmetics company, apologized in a statement to the media after she had threatened to call the police on her neighbor for writing "Black Lives Matter" on his property. Alexander said in the apology that she was "disrespectful" and "should have minded my own business."

India's electric two-wheeler startups surge to over 150 as government revs up EV push

The number of startups in India's electric two-wheeler market has surged to over 150 from 54 in 2021, driven by government incentives to promote clean vehicles and cut oil imports, according to a new analysis. The influx has intensified competition in a segment expected to grow 15-20 times to annual sales of 15-20 million units over the next decade, Bernstein said in a report late Tuesday. "Most are competing in the mainstream, and 85% of the 65 models launched last year were such products: high-speed as against speed and range-constrained products, which used to be a feature of the startups," Bernstein analysts wrote.

The superyacht world is speculating that Mark Zuckerberg just bought this 118-meter boat

  • The 118-meter superyacht Launchpad made her maiden voyage last week.
  • The yacht world is speculating that her owner is Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
  • Here's what we know about the luxury vessel.

Insider Today

In the world of superyachts , privacy is the most valuable asset. It can be next to impossible to discern the details of a superyacht transaction — and that's particularly true if the vessel in question is worth nine figures.

Yet some in the boat blogging world are speculating that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is the new owner of Launchpad, a megayacht currently moored in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after she made her maiden voyage from Gibraltar to St Maarten last week. Launchpad clocks in at 118 meters long, about nine meters shorter than Jeff Bezos' superyacht Koru .

The transaction could not be confirmed, with yacht world insiders declining to share what they know and representatives for Zuckerberg not responding to a request for comment from Business Insider. In the past, reports about Zuckerberg owning superyacht Ulysses have proven false.

Related stories

"It is Feadship's standard policy to never divulge any information about our yachts with reference to ownership, costs, or delivery, etc," Feadship, the ship's builder, wrote to BI. "Whether it is an 18-meter Feadship from the 1960s or a 118-meter Feadship from the 21st century, we do not share private information."

But Zuckerberg's name has been connected to Launchpad for a few months now, beginning in December when reports swirled that he visited Feadship's shipyard in the Netherlands.

Then, earlier in March, yachting bloggers like eSysman SuperYachts and Autoevolution started speculating that he officially snagged the boat, originally built for a sanctioned Russian businessman, at a $300 million price tag. (While that's a seemingly huge amount, it's still less than 0.2% of Zuckerberg's $177 billion net worth.)

Another clue that might point to US ownership is that the yacht bears the flag of the Marshall Islands, a US territory and commonplace for American buyers to register their ships, according to public marine tracking.

If Zuckerberg were to have bought Launchpad, he would join a cohort of superyacht-owning tech billionaires . Along with Bezos, the likes of Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison and Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have purchased impressive boats with even more impressive amenities.

SuperYacht Times , an industry publication and intelligence platform, has some of the best images of the yacht. Photos show a swimming pool on her main deck and a large helipad.

While less is known of the interior, a vessel of her size can likely sleep dozens of guests and crew and may have amenities like an expansive gym where Zuckerberg could practice his jiu-jitsu or a spa with a massage area. We suspect there's also space for plenty of toys — which could include his viral hydrofoil foil .
