Pursers are more common on cruise ships than yachts, but as the number of large yachts that offer special travel packages for passengers increases, so does the number of pursers. There is usually no need for pursers on smaller yachts or privately owned yachts, but on superyachts that offer cruises to the public or chartered yachts, the pursers perform essential and important duties.

One of the primary responsibilities of the purser on a yacht is to supervise the stewards/stewardesses. The purser is the person ultimately responsible for the comfort and experience of the passengers, and so he or she supervises the stewards to make sure the guests are receiving the highest quality service. In addition, the purser must ensure that passengers’ papers and travel documents are complete and in order. As the name indicates, it is usually the purser who is responsible for keeping the accounts during each cruise, including handling customer transactions, paying for excursions, and a number of other financial-related responsibilities. There is usually only one purser onboard a yacht.

Since on a very large specialty yacht there can be dozens of passengers making special purchases, the purser is in charge of all of these, ensuring that all accounts balance. The purser may also work with customs officials and passengers to help them with any necessary paperwork for purchases they’ve made during their cruise. Some pursers are also responsible for tracking cargo, including receipts and payments, if the yacht also transports additional cargo.

Pursers have many key responsiblities. They must be very detail oriented, as well as know basic accounting and cash handling procedures. This is not an entry-level job. Most captains hire pursers who have at least three years or more of experience as a steward/stewardess or other position onboard a yacht.

Purser Job Responsibilities:

  • Supervise stewards and/or stewardesses.
  • Answer passenger questions or address concerns as well as any complaints about service.
  • Responsible for keeping passengers’ valuables secure in a safe on the yacht.
  • If guests can make onboard purchases, the purser handles all passenger accounts and balances cash payments, or submits statements to passengers that must be paid before the passengers disembark.
  • Can be responsible for freight documentation.
  • May be responsible for tracking crew member hours during a cruise for payroll purposes.
  • Works with passengers to ensure that customs paperwork is filled out properly.

In the yachting industry, there are no formal training programs for people who wish to become a purser. If you’re interested in this job, one of the best career paths to take is to become a steward or stewardess. Most pursers are hired from a pool of stewards/stewardesses. It is also important to learn excellent customer service, which you can receive in a Silver Service program available at a yacht training school. Once you have a few years of experience as a steward/stewardess, let the existing purser or captain know of your hopes to become a purser and find out if you can assist in these duties to get the experience.

In addition to the Silver Service Training, you will need to receive STCW 2010 training and pass a medical exam. For more details about the training you may need, visit our Yacht Crew Training page.

Anywhere between $36,000 per year to $75,000 per year, depending on the size of the yacht and your level of experience.

Find out how to become a yacht purser, what qualifications would you need, what are the current trends and how much does a yacht purser make?

With nearly 10 years in total at sea, four of which as Purser, Angela Wallace decided to put her knowledge to use and help future generations of yacht pursers pursue their dream careers. Angela is an IAMI GUEST accredited trainer teaching Purser courses. She has also created an online course for Pursers , which makes it easier for people around the world to get the training needed to work as a yacht purser.

We have asked Angela to help us answer some of the most asked questions about becoming a yacht purser:

What does a yacht Purser do?

This role is directly responsible to the Captain, ensuring the smooth operation of all the administrative aspects in running a yacht. Duties include, but are not limited to port clearance procedures, crew documentation and administration, financial reporting, crew salaries, budget management, charter accounts, itinerary planning, assisting the Captain with ISM reporting and secretarial duties, assisting and ensuring the crew and vessel are compliant with the maritime legalities, guest, crew and vessel logistics. Basically, what every Captain on a smaller yacht or one without a Purser does, with the exception of actually driving the vessel!

How is the work-life balance of a position like this?

If you are lucky enough to be on a one-to-one rotation, it is fabulous! With pretty much six months off each year there really is nothing to complain about. That said, even when you are on leave, you are, and should be fully contactable by the vessel to answer any queries or assist in any way. Not all Pursers are on rotation though, so that obviously makes life a little more difficult. The role of the Purser has huge responsibilities, and therefore it is quite stressful, so remembering to take time out for you and to be firm with your boundaries is really important.

Do you have to work as a Chief Stew before becoming a Purser?

Absolutely not. This role has many transferable skills, so you can come in from any department onboard or even from shore. Naturally having knowledge and experience onboard is incredibly helpful, especially in being familiar with terminology. Many yachts will utilise the 2nd stew or even 3rd with some admin duties, normally this occurs due to the previous skills and experience this person has. Coming from a managerial role, working with HNW clients, P. A, working on private jets, cruise ships, having a bachelor degree in events, management, accounting will assist greatly.

I think it is important though to point out, this role is better suited to someone a little older who is happy to sit at a computer all day. Also, if looking for a direct Purser position, experience on a larger yacht, if already working onboard, is really beneficial. Working on yachts 28-40m doesn't really prepare you for what it is like to work on an 85m or even a 150m yacht!

How do you make a switch from being part of the interior team to becoming a Purser?

Take on more admin responsibilities, be proactive in asking the Captain if he/she needs assistance, become more aware of your surroundings and what the yacht is doing. Naturally enrolling on the Purser course is advisable. With this course being accredited, the content is monitored closely and kept up-to-date, thus ensuring the correct and current information is passed on. If you are working on a yacht that already has a Purser, see if there is anything you can do to assist them. Be aware though, due to the confidentiality of the position, not all tasks can be delegated.

What qualifications and experience do you need to become a Purser?

All the basic qualifications to work onboard, plus the Purser IAMI GUEST certificate. Minimum of 2yrs in a senior position onboard, preferably on a yacht greater than 60m. You must be computer literate with experience in Excel, Word and some designing programs such as PowerPoint or Google Slides. Have excellent communication skills and be proficient in English, both verbal and written. Have great organisational skills, be able to take initiative, self-motivated, a problem solver, decisive and most importantly be a good listener and empathetic. As mentioned earlier, coming from a managerial role, working with HNW clients, P. A, working on private jets, cruise ships, having a bachelor degree in events, management, accounting will assist greatly.

Where does the Purser fall in the yacht crew hierarchy and who does he/she report to?

This is a high-ranking position, directly responsible to the Captain and assisting the other HODs. Pursers also work closely with the Management Company or Family Office/Accountant.

How much does a yacht Purser position pay?

Anywhere from €5,000 to €10,000 per month depending on size of the vessel.

What would be an ideal type of person to become a yacht purser? What are the top 3 skills that they should have?

People skills, though not guest facing per sé, so no need for that bubbly personality, but you do need to know how to talk and communicate with people. Highly organised is ESSENTIAL! And the ability to anticipate, be flexible, calm and proactive.

What have you noticed are the most challenging aspects of being a Purser?

COVID for sure! This has thrown the curve ball with an almighty punch as the travel restrictions have meant crew cannot go home on leave, having to quarantine, who pays for this? Contracts and visas being extended, visas not being able to be obtained, it's just been massive! Back in normal times, the most challenging aspect of a Purser's role is effectively prioritising and multi-tasking. Realising that plan A is not set in stone, so having alternative back-up plans will help no end with the stress levels when things change in a nano-second.

What have you noticed are the current trends? Has the position become more popular, are there more open positions for a Purser?

During lockdown, it was a perfect time to study remotely, so it seemed everyone wanted to become a Purser. This position, is highly sought after as it tends to offer rotation, and, as it is not guest facing, the behind-the-scenes aspect is rather attractive after many years of late nights and running around after guests. That said, many do not understand what a Purser really does, it is more than tapping on the computer keyboard and doing the monthly accounts. As more and more larger yachts are being built there is definitely more availability for this role. I am also seeing more and more 2nd Stews being tasked with some Purser related duties and the Stew/Admin role is gaining popularity. I think it is important to remember, a stewardess doing the interior accounts, is not a purser and is not doing purser duties.

What do you teach in your courses?

The list is endless! But in a nutshell, the Purser program will effectively teach someone all that is required to successfully become an efficient Purser onboard a Superyacht. From the role of the Purser, to crew administration and logistics, Muster Duties, port clearances, financial administration and budgeting, to Maritime legislation and legalities, charter accounts and cultural differences, guest logistics and itinerary planning, vessel logistics as well as familiarity of software programs, it's all in there!

Are the people ready to work as Pursers after finishing the course?

Yes, some students are already in that role and still find the course useful and informative.

How long does the course last and how much it costs?

The course that I teach – Purser Trainer, the students have access to the learning platform for one year, irrespective if they finish the training earlier. Each module is different in respect of how long it will take to complete, but in total there is about 180-185 hours of study, zoom calls, and assignments to complete. The cost of the full course is €3,000.00. You can find out more about the course on the official Purser Trainer website.

Are you looking for a Purser job onboard a yacht?

If you are ready for your new yachting adventure register or log into your YPI CREW profile where you will be able to upload your CV and your certificates. After that you will be able to leave a message directly to our expert Purser recruiter Annabelle Huvelin via the 'Check in' option on your profile.

Pursers On-Board Superyachts

Noticing a trend in increased applications to be Pursers we thought we would provide some input into what it takes to be one, including the relative duties, career paths to qualifying and what the job market currently looks like.

Purser positions generally exist on larger yachts and their work is responsible for the effective and smooth running of the yacht, similar to the work of a Chief Stewardess who would look after the interior including provisions, concierge duties and accounts etc. on smaller yachts.

The Role Pursers generally have multiple responsibilities to carry out on the yacht. It is heavily administrative including crew HR, visa applications and immigration, to booking flights and checking crew certifications. It is therefore important to understand the international regulations and daily management of crew certificates and contracts. Understanding the flag state and management company of the vessel is equally important.

Another important aspect of being a Purser is to understand the safety and muster duties on board, which comes from knowledge of yacht operations, crew activities and safety inductions. In addition knowing the maritime laws will be advantageous for ensuring the yacht adheres to ISM and ISPS codes. Port disembarkation and clearance is another area Pursers’ need to be competent in. Understanding the documentation process and urgency of time keeping throughout, whilst knowing the ships’ certification, immigration regulations in different countries and general customs regulations.

They are also responsible for completing the accounts, payroll and other financial matters such as budgeting and financial planning. Yachts tend to use a software package which makes it easier to record information and present accurate accounts, there are a few different ones around and are becoming very efficient, however some yachts still use good old Excel!

Concierge duties can sometimes be the responsibility of the Purser, although quite often it will be the Chief Stewardess who does this. Either way having the ability to research and present itineraries to yacht’s Owners / Guests is a skill a Purser must have. Quite often there will be all sorts of facets to consider such as security, transport, restaurants and attractions to organise. Then there is the behind the scenes aspect of charter management, structuring cost, suppliers, guest complaints etc.

It is an extremely responsible role with a demanding workload and the need for adept computer skills, excellent communication and the confidence to manage people. The Purser is often seen as a senior within the structure of a yacht and quite often referred to as an ‘Agony Aunt’ for the crew! Captains need to rely on their Pursers for various reasons, candidates therefore usually need to have previous yachting (or cruise) experience, and have a level of maturity about them with excellent leadership styles.

I fit the bill, how do I get this job? At present we primarily recruit Pursers with two main types of backgrounds, those that have been Chief Stewardess’s and those that come from a cruise ship Purser background. This difference arises due to the specifications requested from Captains and management companies, and their knowledge of what work needs to be done on board.

Chief Stewardess’s / Head of departments that have worked on yachts 60m up to 100m+ and have excellent experience (4yrs+), longevity and references, are generally a favourite and certainly dominating the Purser market at present. On the flip side since the yachts are getting bigger, many Captains are choosing Pursers that have come from cruise ships, whom are therefore accustomed to the large volume of crew, accounts and general ship management. Again typically this type of candidate would have been a Chief Purser on board with excellent financial skills, at least four years’ experience and glowing references.

Certainly having completed a degree in Business, Finance, Accounts etc. will largely help a candidate with the workload and type of work experienced as a Purser, whilst having yacht experience generally fills in the gaps with regards to the maritime industry, legislations and life on board. There are even a couple of Purser courses that exist, plus other maritime training schools that can offer certain modules relating to the job that will help you be more prepared to perform the tasks required.

A Final Note Pursers must have excellent attention to detail, a strong knowledge of the yachting industry and experience living on board. Their administration and accounting must be efficient and accurate, whilst communication skills at the highest level. All in all it is a very competitive position with few jobs out there to compete for. ‘Who you know’ will often work in your favour, so ensure your references are good! It is not an easy option but a different career path to follow within yachting as opposed to the Chief Stewardess, Captain routes. Packages are usually very good with time for time rotation and high salaries for the best candidates.

In ‍this article, we will delve‍ into key strategies and ⁣tips ⁢that will guide you in identifying and hiring‌ the ideal⁤ purser ‍for your yacht.

A bachelor’s degree⁣ in ⁢hospitality, ‍ business ⁤administration, or a related field is often preferred. However, in the absence of such a degree, extensive experience in ‍a similar role in the luxury yachting or hospitality industry can suffice.

Tips for Conducting Effective Interviews⁣ for Yacht Pursers

When interviewing candidates for the position of a yacht purser, it‌ is crucial to ensure the ⁤process is‌ effective and ⁣yields the‍ best possible results. • Look for communication skills: Effective⁣ communication‍ is vital‍ in this‌ role, so look for candidates‌ who can express⁢ their thoughts clearly and‍ professionally.
  • Check for organizational skills: As a purser oversees the administration on⁤ the yacht, they need‌ to be highly organized. Ask⁣ about⁢ their methods for staying organized and managing ⁢their workload.

Lastly, verify their credentials .⁤ Make sure to check their ‍certificates,⁤ licenses, and any other necessary⁤ qualifications. It’s⁤ also a good idea⁣ to check references from their previous employers ⁣to understand their work ethic and performance better.

Checking References ⁣and Verifying ⁣Credentials: A Vital Step in the Hiring Process

Ensuring ⁣the suitability ⁢of potential candidates for roles within the luxury ⁤yachting sector is ⁣crucial to‌ maintaining our high standards of service and performance. Verifying the credentials and checking the references of applicants is a vital ‍part of this process. This ‍step is not ⁢one to be overlooked,‍ as it can provide ⁣valuable⁢ insights into the candidate’s character, work ethic, and ⁣suitability for the role.

When assessing a‍ candidate’s ‌credentials, it’s essential to confirm the ‍authenticity ⁢of their qualifications. This includes checking certificates⁢ of‌ competency , ‌ nautical‍ licenses ,‍ and ⁤any additional qualifications relevant to the position. Be sure to also verify the⁢ issuing authority ⁤to ensure its legitimacy.‍ In our ⁣sector, fraudulent qualifications ⁣can lead to serious safety issues, ⁤hence the need for thorough checks.

  • Experience Verification: Confirm the candidate’s work history ⁤by ⁢reaching out to their listed previous employers. Inquire about the candidate’s roles and responsibilities, performance, and reasons for leaving the previous⁣ job. This step is‌ vital to ensure the ‌candidate possesses the necessary experience and skills.
  • Character References: Contacting character references can help you gain insights into the candidate’s personal qualities and ‍ethic. Ask⁣ about the candidate’s reliability, teamwork abilities, and how they handle pressure or stress.
  • Document Verification: ‌ Ensure all provided documentation, such as passports, ⁣visas, ⁣or seafarer’s ‌book, are valid ⁤and ⁤up-to-date. These documents are ⁣important ‍to ⁢confirm‌ the candidate’s eligibility to work in certain regions or on specific ⁤vessels.

Performing these ⁢checks‌ may seem time-consuming, but they‌ are critical to⁢ ensure the hiring of competent, qualified, and reliable crew members. Investing⁣ this⁢ time in the hiring process⁣ will ultimately contribute ⁣to the smooth operation and reputation of‌ your luxury yacht.

Remember, the goal is not‍ just to fill ‍a vacancy, but to find the right ⁢person who will ⁢add value to the team⁣ and enhance the overall ⁤yachting experience of your clients.

Considering Personality Fit: ⁤Ensuring a Positive⁤ Work ⁤Environment‍ Onboard

In the luxury⁣ yachting sector, it’s not just about a⁤ candidate’s skills and qualifications. An important factor⁤ to consider ⁣is ⁢how well an individual’s‌ personality will fit into your ⁢existing crew.⁣ A harmonious‍ work⁣ environment onboard is crucial for the ⁢smooth running of operations and for the overall wellbeing⁤ of‌ the team.‌ Therefore, taking personality ‍fit⁤ into‍ account is just as important as assessing a candidate’s professional abilities.

Harmony ⁤and Teamwork: Given the close quarters and⁣ the extended‍ periods of‍ time‍ spent together, it becomes vital to have a⁤ team who can work well together. Assessing a candidate’s⁤ ability⁤ to ⁤get along with others, their team spirit, and‌ their capacity to handle⁤ conflict can help to ensure a positive work environment onboard. ⁤Candidates who are flexible, ⁣adaptable, and have a positive⁣ attitude are often more likely to integrate well into an existing team.

  • Leadership Skills: ‍ For ⁢positions that require leading ‌a team, such as the Captain or Chief Officer, it’s crucial⁣ to consider ⁤leadership styles. You’ll⁣ want to ‌look for candidates who can lead by example, motivate their team, ⁣and maintain a ⁣positive work environment ⁣even‍ in ‌challenging circumstances.
  • Communication ⁢Skills: Good communication is key⁤ in a close-knit ⁢environment like a yacht. Candidates who⁤ can express themselves clearly, listen actively, ⁤and handle conflicts diplomatically ⁢will contribute⁤ to ‌a healthier, more‌ productive work environment.
  • Resilience: The ‍yachting industry⁣ can be challenging, with‌ long⁢ hours, demanding clients,⁤ and periods away from home. Resilient candidates who can handle stress and adapt to changing situations will be⁣ more likely to maintain ‌a positive ‍attitude ‍and contribute to ‌a good team spirit.

Remember, a happy⁢ and ⁢harmonious crew is ⁤more likely‍ to⁢ deliver exceptional⁢ service,‌ which ⁤in turn leads to satisfied‌ guests and ⁣a successful yacht ⁤charter season. Therefore, considering personality fit ⁤when hiring can have ⁤a significant impact on the overall success of your yacht ‌operations.

Onboarding and Training: ‍The Final Steps ‍in Hiring the Right Purser for Your Yacht

Once⁤ you‍ have identified the perfect Purser for ‌your yacht, it’s time to introduce them ⁤to their new duties and the rest of the team. The onboarding process is crucial in⁣ ensuring the successful integration of your ⁢new hire. This includes a comprehensive tour of the yacht, introducing them to the rest of the crew, ⁤and familiarizing them with their⁢ daily duties. It’s also important to ⁣ensure they are aware of any specific ‍protocols or ⁤procedures that are unique to your vessel.

During the onboarding process, ⁤it’s advisable ⁣to:

  • Clearly communicate the ‍purser’s⁤ responsibilities and⁣ expectations
  • Review‍ safety⁣ procedures ‍and emergency plans
  • Provide them with a detailed ⁢overview of the yacht, including its ‌layout, operations, and equipment
  • Introduce them to the yacht’s culture and values

The ⁤ training phase ⁤is just as‌ crucial as the‌ onboarding phase. Despite the fact that your new purser might already have previous experience, every yacht operates differently. As⁢ such,⁤ it’s important to‌ provide personalized training ⁢that aligns‍ with your yacht’s specific needs and standards. Depending on your yacht’s‌ operations, ‍the ⁣training might cover areas⁣ like‌ administrative duties, communication protocol, guest relations and‍ service standards.

During the training phase, ensure ‌to:

  • Provide guidance on the use of ‌any specific systems ‍or‍ software used onboard
  • Offer hands-on training ‍for any unique or specialized equipment
  • Reinforce your ‌expectations regarding guest service and⁤ satisfaction
  • Provide opportunities for role-play ‌or real-life scenarios to test their skills ⁤and readiness

Remember,⁤ the goal of ‌the onboarding and training ⁣process is not⁢ just to equip the purser with the necessary skills and knowledge,⁤ but also‍ to make them ‌feel welcomed and valued.

A well-executed‍ onboarding and training process can significantly ⁤boost the⁣ purser’s confidence and ⁤productivity, leading to enhanced guest satisfaction ⁢and⁣ overall yacht operations.

In conclusion, finding the right‌ purser for ‌your yacht is crucial to ensure that your vessel runs smoothly‌ and ‍efficiently. You‍ want someone with the⁢ right qualifications, experience, and character traits that align with your team’s culture and values. ⁣

This task may sound daunting, but with Lighthouse Careers, we simplify⁣ the process for you. Our recruitment specialists have ‍years of experience in the luxury yachting sector and understand the unique demands⁣ of the industry.

We⁣ have a ⁤vast network of professionals and ‍use a detailed screening process to⁤ identify potential candidates who not‍ only meet your⁤ requirements ‍but also‌ suit⁤ your yacht’s particular ⁢environment. Let us take the stress out of the hiring process and ⁤provide you⁢ with a purser who can truly navigate the⁤ complexities of managing a yacht. Trust ⁢Lighthouse Careers to light the way to your perfect yacht ‍crew.

Virtual Pursers

The Role of a Purser

Size means everything in the superyacht world. Although, the bigger the yacht, the more pertinent the role of a Purser. As yachts increase in size, so do the administrative pressures faced by Captains and their shoreside counterparts. This explains the significant growth the Yacht Purser job role has had over the past few years. Soon, the role of a Purser will hold the same weight as the more familiar yacht crew jobs. Without a Purser, the ever-increasing regulations and administrative workload could be detrimental to the proper functioning of the vessel.

What is a Yacht Purser?

The need for a Purser exists on larger yachts with the sole purpose to ensure seamless operations. Under the Captain’s direction, the Purser is essentially responsible for the effective and smooth running of the vessel. As a senior crew member, the Purser manages several areas, including HR, accounts, interior, purchasing, inventory, and legal aspects. The role of the Purser is to be the single point of contact for all department heads. A credible and qualified Purser should create uniformity and streamline administrative duties, making them an invaluable asset to the Yacht.

What does the role of a Purser entail?

Pursers generally have multiple essential and important duties. Some of these tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Finance – Takes ownership of all fiscal matters including accounting, budgeting and bookkeeping
  • Buyer – Purchases everything needed to cater for crew and guests including food, drinks, uniform, cleaning products and more
  • Contracts and Negotiation – Liaise with suppliers and distributors to ensure the yacht is provisioned
  • Crew Administration – Will administer payroll for the crew and oversees all crew immigration
  • Yacht Administration – Organise port clearances, logistics and customs.
  • Charter Administration – If the yacht is chartered this will incur further responsibilities
  • Guest Activities – Liaise with guests and crew to organise activities

Industry experience required to become a Purser?

Eloquent communication skills, sound industry knowledge, first-hand experience, and an eye for detail are absolute must-haves for a Purser. Since the role of a Purser revolves around paperwork, efficient and accurate administration and accounting skills goes without saying.

Although the job requirements may differ per yacht, in a nutshell, a well-rounded Purser should encompass the following

  • At least five years’ experience in the superyacht industry
  • Corporate land-based experience
  • Exceptional service, communication, organizational, diplomacy, and delegation skills
  • Excellent computer skills – proficient in Microsoft Office and various accounting software
  • A good understanding of maritime law
  • ISM and ISPS protocols
  • Financial management
  • Knowledge of cruising areas, including restaurant suggestions, shoreside activities
  • Provisioning around the globe
  • Excellent knowledge of wines
  • STCW & PSA
  • ENG 1 Medical

On-board vs shoreside Purser

An on-board Purser is self-explanatory. Land-based Pursers do everything an on-board purser does, just in a remote capacity. There are many reasons why yachts choose to outsource their yacht administration and opt for a shoreside Purser

  • Space – Can’t accommodate a Purser on-board
  • Cost-effective – A dedicated Purser without the overheads
  • Flexibility – Don’t require a permanent employee or prefer flexibility with hours
  • Staff retention – The Purser you’ll never lose

What salary can you expect as a Purser?

For an established onboard Purser, with great responsibility, comes great reward. The role of a Purser oversees business critical functions, so it is fair to expect just compensation and time off. The salary is largely dependent on the size of the vessel, however tools such YPI can provide a more-or-less ballpark figure. As per Yachting Pages , “pay for a Purser can range from roughly €4,000 to upwards of €7,000 per month” and will most likely include rotation. Most commonly 2 months on two months off, requiring vessels to employ two Pursers to cover the one role.

How can the role of a Purser assist you?

A superyacht is essentially a business and as such should operate as one. Without a Purser, large yachts may struggle to function effectively, let alone maintain the high standard of service that on-board guests expect. The role of a Purser is established to assist the Captain and Chief Officer to alleviate the administrative duties, eliminating stress through saving time and effort. With twenty years combined experience,  Virtual Pursers  are industry experts who understand first-hand the ever-increasing administrative pressures faced by the maritime industry. Offering a flexible approach, Virtual Pursers  are readily available to support all vessels, no matter the size of the yacht or the extent of the need, as well as other maritime professionals such as Yacht/Fleet Managers, Charter Brokers, Marinas/Shipyards. An ideal solution for yachts that are fully crewed, have minimal space on-board, or who don’t necessarily require full-time support. As well as yachts who have an established Purser, supporting shortfalls and as a temporary solution. Using Virtual Pursers  guarantees continuity in a cost-effective manner, introducing the concept of “The Purser You’ll Never Lose”; retaining all the information and experience that comes with a great Purser, for years to come.

Q & A with co-founder of Virtual Pursers Bec McKeever

How did you become a Purser?

I came into yachting with a background in accounting, not planning to utilise my past life profession at all actually. My first yacht with the infamous M/Y Octopus, at 126m she is a beauty! I was instantly in awe with the Chief Stewardess & Purser but it wasn’t until a year or two into yachting that I started thinking about a career path and that I had the potential to climb the ranks. I was Chief Stew for a few years before Purser. Two very different roles but a lot of personal and professional development in the Chief Stew role, I believe, that really makes a positive difference to your ability in the Purser role.

Do you think you need yachting experience to be a Purser?

Yachting is so different to any other industry and experience within it lays a solid foundation, it’s the integral part of becoming a successful Purser.

What’s your favourite aspect of being a Purser?

Having my finger on the pulse and being able to orchestrate the logistics of the entire vessel. It’s so rewarding to see my plan come into action and be pulled together, especially when you have a bit of OCD.

Q & A with co-founder of Virtual Pursers Dominique Smit

Do you have to be a Chief Stew before you become a purser?

Even though it is a completely different role, it is recommended that you have some Chief Stew experience before you become a Purser. Not only will it give you a better sense of responsibility and leadership but it allows you to work closer with other department heads and gives you a better sense of how the different departments function together and the bigger picture of how the boat functions overall which is essential for the purser position.

Would you recommend doing a Purser course?

I would definitely recommend training for the role of Purser, background knowledge is essential and any additional training is always beneficial. However, do your research before you pick a course. Having a mentor to guide me through my career has been invaluable so if you do have anyone you trust, ask for their advice.

Was it always your goal to become a Purser?

I didn’t start yachting with the goal to become a Purser, I didn’t even know what a Purser was in the beginning! But as my career evolved, I started enjoying the constant challenges each new position brought and the Purser position is so stimulating and every day is different that I felt like it would be the perfect job for me.
