Boat Test: 2023 Phenom Yachts 37

Phenom Yachts 37 running near shore

The Phenom 37 is a spare-no-expense offshore fishing boat loaded with standards that are almost always options aboard other boats, including a Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer, Mercury Joystick Docking for Outboards, a Vetus 571 Bow Pro thruster that acts in concert with the joystick, and Zipwake trim control.

Interior and Accessories

Because Phenom is a semi-custom builder that sells direct to the public, owners can customize their bling in ways like adding more than three Gemlux rod holders per gunwale. There’s an impressive array of 13 rocket launchers set into two tiers on the back side of the hardtop. Fishy features include twin 30-gallon livewells at opposing corners of the transom. An automatic system that pressurizes each livewell to 0.5 psi keeps the tanks full to eliminate sloshing no matter the speed or sea condition. Two pumps per livewell add redundancy, and they all reside in a pump box to prevent air from getting into the lines when running in rough water.

Phenom Yachts 37 bow seating

For overnighting, there’s a lockable, air-conditioned cabin with a 6-foot-long berth wide enough for two that converts to a rear-facing bench seat thanks to the seatback that deploys in two seconds. There’s also a standard electric Dometic head with a pump-out, and a sink with a shower attachment.

Phenom Yachts 37 cockpit

At the helm are three side-by-side captain’s chairs with individual electronic fore and aft sliders, and the backrests have a venting system to deliver air or heat. The dash on our test boat had twin 22-inch Garmin 8622 touchscreen displays. The three-sided tempered-glass windscreen has a vent that opens electronically.

Phenom Yachts 37 cabin

Phenom’s twin-vented NexStep hull reduces surface tension for better efficiency and higher speeds, and its designers used a three-strake hull design with chamfered edges rather than rounded ones to further decrease drag and reduce slamming in rough seas. The Phenom 37’s hull is ready to do battle with the chop, with a sharp 65 degrees of entry and 23 degrees of deadrise at the stern. Normally, this could make a boat tender in rolling ocean swells, but Phenom’s standard gyrostabilizer keeps the deck earth-steady. Our test boat sported triple 400 hp Mercury V-10 Verado outboards . While Phenom has been able to coax speeds of more than 70 mph during performance runs, our test results fell just short of that mark at 68.3 mph.

  • Engines: Triple 400 hp Mercury Verados
  • Drive/Props: Outboard/Merc Revolution X 14 5/8″ x 27″ 4-blade
  • Gear Ratio: 2.80:1 Fuel Load: 270 gal. Crew Weight: 625 lb.

Phenom Yachts 37 head

High Points

  • Port and starboard dive doors assist with passenger boarding and landing large fish.
  • Access to features, like the Vetus 571 Bow Pro thruster and Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer, is exceptional.
  • Lumitec RGB lighting system uses 17 lights to create a magical and safer nighttime experience.
  • Use of SeaSuckers to secure outrigger halyards seems like an uncharacteristically low-tech workaround for this advanced boat.
  • No windshield-wiper option to keep the forward glass clean during hard offshore runs.

Toughest Competitor

Formula’s 387 center-console is similar in size, performance and mission. The biggest difference between the models is Formula does not include the Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer as a standard feature. When added, it makes the Formula about $200,000 more expensive.

Eighteen of those collapses happened in the United States.

A list of notable disasters involving ships or barges hitting bridges in the U.S.:

INTERSTATE 40 BRIDGE: 14 DEAD

May 26, 2002: A barge hit the Interstate 40 bridge over the Arkansas River at Webbers Falls, Oklahoma, collapsing a 500-foot section of road and plunging vehicles into the water. Fourteen people died and 11 were injured.

QUEEN ISABELLA CAUSEWAY: 8 DEAD

Sept. 15, 2001: A tugboat and barge struck the Queen Isabella Causeway in Port Isabel, Texas, causing a midsection of the bridge to tumble 80 feet into the bay below. Eight people died after motorists drove into the hole.

EADS BRIDGE: 50 INJURED

SEEBER BRIDGE: 1 DEAD

May 28, 1993: The towboat Chris, pushing the empty hopper barge DM3021, hit a support tier of the Judge William Seeber Bridge in New Orleans. Two spans and the two-column bent collapsed onto the barge. Two cars carrying three people fell with the four-lane bridge deck into a canal. One person died and two people were seriously injured.

SUNSHINE SKYWAY BRIDGE: 35 DEAD

May 9, 1980: The 609-foot freighter Summit Venture was navigating through the narrow, winding shipping channel of Florida’s Tampa Bay when a sudden, blinding squall knocked out the ship’s radar. The ship sheared off a support of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, dropping a 1,400-foot section of concrete roadway during the morning rush hour. Seven vehicles, including a bus with 26 aboard, fell 150 feet into the water. Thirty-five people died.

From longshoremen to charter boats, Baltimore's port closure means lost work

Ship-to-shore cranes sit unused after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed, blocking access to the Port of Baltimore.

When the container ship Dali struck the base of the Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday morning, it set off a rapid chain of events. The bridge crumpled into the Patapsco River, its twisted metal draped over the ship and its thousands of containers. Eight construction workers and their cars tumbled into the water. Two of the workers are dead; four are still missing and presumed dead. And the whole disaster is now blocking one of the country's busiest ports, the Port of Baltimore.

For many workers at the port, that chain of events means that work has either slowed or stopped completely.

"Quite a few are out of work right now," says Scott Cowan, president of International Longshoremen's Association Local 333 in Baltimore. He represents 2,400 dockworkers and ILA members in the Port of Baltimore.

These are the workers who load and unload ships at the port. They operate cranes. They receive and deliver cargo. They do maintenance and repair work on equipment and containers. They perform clerical work like timekeeping and recording the movement of cargo.

"Some of our maintenance guys and mechanics are still going to work to maintain the equipment in the facility," says Cowan. "But the bulk of our work is the unloading and loading. That's where the labor-intensive jobs are, where we use a lot of people. ... And that's not happening right now."

How long it takes to get the shipping channel cleared will determine how deeply port workers are affected — and the size of the impact to Maryland's economy . Cowan says the closure of the shipping channel is costing $191 million a day in lost economic activity.

The state has set up a dedicated unemployment line for workers affected by the port closure. Through Wednesday, the day after the collapse, fewer than 200 affected workers had made unemployment claims, according to a spokesperson for the Maryland Department of Labor.

And the Maryland Senate president, Sen. Bill Ferguson, said earlier this week that he will sponsor emergency legislation to provide income replacement for workers impacted by the port's closure.

Still, Cowan doesn't think the impact will be a lasting one for Baltimore's longshoremen: "I believe the cargo will rebound here quite strongly and we'll be going into the Christmas season here shortly, bringing goods into this country. So we should be fine."

Smaller waterfront businesses are also affected

Bobby LaPin — "Captain Bobby" — owns and operates Boat Baltimore, offering sailing tours of Baltimore Harbor and the Chesapeake Bay. He docks the 45-foot-long sailboat Saeda at a marina in South Baltimore.

Bobby LaPin says he won't start cruises for his charter boat business for another month, due to collapse of the Key Bridge. His sailboat is seen docked at the Port Covington Marina on Thursday in Baltimore.

It's a seasonal business, and he'd been gearing up to start cruises on April 1. Now he won't open until May. So the sailboat remains anchored, a blue tarp pulled taut over its deck.

"We decided to push back our opening day ... because we don't want to add to clutter of boats in the harbor while there is a recovery mission still ongoing," he says. "I also don't want to take bookings for people that are simply trying to get on the boat so they can see the devastation of the bridge."

Normally he'd be hiring deckhands and captains to work for the summer, folks who work the winter in Florida and the summer up north. But for now, he's holding off any hiring.

The twisted metal of the Francis Scott Key Bridge hangs over the container ship Dali, which caused the bridge's collapse on Tuesday after striking one of the bridge's piers. The wreckage is blocking the Port of Baltimore's shipping channel. Tim Wolfer for NPR hide caption

He says it's too early to tell exactly what will be the impact on his business, but he expects bookings from tourists and conventioneers to decline for a time. And since the collapsed bridge is blocking access to the Chesapeake, he can't take longer, more lucrative bookings, where he'd sail out to the bay.

"Obviously, the No. 1 concern economically is going to be to clear the channel so shipping can start. And then after that happens, they have to build a bridge," he says. "But when they build a bridge, they need to block the channel to do so. So, you know, are we even going to have a bridge again?"

Officials say the first step is to remove the debris, then open the shipping channel, and later build a new bridge. President Biden has pledged that the federal government will pay for the bridge's rebuilding, which could take years .

It won't be necessary to close the channel while the bridge is under construction, says Benjamin Schafer, a professor of civil and systems engineering at Johns Hopkins University. "This has been a common challenge for bridge builders going back to at least the late 19th century," and there are a number of construction techniques that will allow the channel to stay open, he says.

A weird few years ahead

Along the waterfront at the Port Covington Marina on Thursday, all the boats were anchored. Next door, the terminal at Cruise Maryland sits empty, the giant ships now directed to other moorings. Just inland from the marina are the sleek new buildings of Baltimore Peninsula , with apartments, office space and restaurants.

Alex Snider is the waterfront operations manager for MAG Partners, the company that's redeveloping the peninsula. He says this time of year is generally quiet at the marina, before the season for recreational boaters picks up in late April or early May.

Even with the bridge collapse and the port closure, Snider talks about everything that's planned at the marina in the months ahead: "There's a sailing club that's going to be here, we've got a kayak launch. We've got the Baltimore Dragon Boat Club's going to be rowing out of here this year. So it's very busy."

Like many in Baltimore, the Key Bridge stirs up feelings of nostalgia for Snider, who used to run boats in the harbor.

"It was a beautiful bridge," he says. "I've piloted driven boats, captained boats under that bridge hundreds and hundreds of times. ... It's going to be a weird few years, not having that there visually."

The Hood 35 by Lyman-Morse hits the sweet spot of C.W. Hood Yacht Design’s powerboat acumen. Pulling in the best elements of the firm’s successful mid-sized powerboats, the Hood 35 LM Express Cruiser takes the express cruiser genre to another level – perfect for day- and weekend-long jaunts. This yacht is available in three versions: soft top, hard top, and a flybridge.

Hull No. 2 of this award winning design is currently under construction in Thomaston, Maine , and is scheduled for a June 2023 launch. This “Midnight Blue” beauty is available for purchase, a rare opportunity with typical backlogs pushing 2-3 years.

The strength of this collaboration between Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding and CW Hood Yacht Design is built from the keel up, with its solid cold-molded composite hull topped off with light-weight cored carbon fiber decks and superstructure. The result is a boat that is light enough to deliver great performance and efficiency, with enough mass left in the hull to punch through some serious chop.

Taking full advantage of the semi-custom nature of this series, she boasts an additional foot and a half of length in the optimized Modified-V hull.

Powered by twin Volvo Penta D6 440’s, she’ll easily top 40 knots, and cruise comfortably in the low 30’s.

The Volvo DPI (duo-prop) outdrives, joystick steering, and interceptors, all integrated through Volvo’s Electronic Vessel Control (EVC), provide complete control around the dock, with outboard-like performance and handling on the bay. The Side-Power bow thruster adds an additional layer of control in tight spaces, while the boat’s roll motion is reduced by the Seakeeper Gyro Stabilizer. Trimming the drives enables shallow water running, and beaching when fully raised.

In the forward cabin you will find a full galley, double berth and head with separate shower, as well as air conditioning and hot water, even at anchor, thanks to the 5KW generator.

The pilot house features a full helm station to starboard, and companion seat to port, with unobstructed 360 degree sight lines. Locating the engines near the transom allows for a wide open cockpit space. The aft bench seat and sun pad combine to form a large hatch, providing better engine access than most yard mechanics are accustomed to. Extensive sound insulation keeps engine noise below conversation levels.

It’s worth noting that the large open cockpit space could easily accommodate additional built-in seating and/or a wet bar if desired.

Future versions of the Hood 35LM could include enclosed pilothouse and flybridge layouts, as well as various propulsion options, including Jets, IPS, I/O’s or Outboards, all of which have been considered in this versatile design.

Keep an eye out for further updates as we get closer to our June launch!

Lyman-Morse’s New Versatile Dayboat

  • By Victor Tan

Hood 35 LM

Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding and CW Hood Yacht Design have collaborated on another powerboat: the Hood 35 LM. The duo’s previous project was the Hood 57 LM.

The Hood 35 LM is a semicustom build that’s available with hardtop, flybridge and soft-top options. Hull No. 1 of the 35 has a hardtop and is expected to launch early this summer; Hull No. 2 is the flybridge version, with completion expected by 2023.

Other options include adding a companion seat at the helm and a U-shaped settee to port. Belowdecks, owners can choose a traditional V-berth setup, a queen berth or an offset berth with a settee (only available with the galley-up layout).

The helm station is to starboard at amidships. Abaft it is a settee that accommodates at least two people. Abaft the settee are single aft-facing seats.

Hood 35 LM

The transom door on centerline separates two additional forward-facing seats in the port and starboard corners. The Hood 35 LM also has a swim platform, providing easy access to the water for a morning swim.

Belowdecks, the galley is to port with a dual-voltage refrigerator, a sink and a cooktop. A closet and the head (which has a shower and sink) are to starboard. Hull No. 2 has a separate shower with a galley-up layout. Either hull type is perfect for someone looking for a small cruising boat with overnight capacity.

The Maine-based builder used cold-molded construction for the Hood 35 LM’s hull, just as it did on the 65-foot sailing yacht Anna by Stephens Waring Yacht Design. The 35’s deck is built with E-glass. The vessel’s interiors are finished with Douglas fir, and veneers of western red cedar cover the exterior spaces.

Power for Hull No. 1 is twin 440 hp Yanmar 6LY440 diesels coupled to a pair of HJX29 water jets from HamiltonJet. The HJX29 has enhanced steering and Hamilton’s new AVX control system. Reported top speed is 38 knots; reported cruising speed is 30 knots. Optional power is twin Volvo Penta D6-440 DPI stern drives that produce reported cruising and top speeds of 30-plus and 40-plus knots, respectively.

Hood 23 is a 23 ′ 7 ″ / 7.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Warwick Hood and built by Stoddart Bros Marine (AU) starting in 1966.

Drawing of Hood 23

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The first HOOD 23’s came from Hood Boating Company Ltd. The majority were built at Stoddart Brothers Marine in Queensland. The design was updated in 1972 and there are at least 4 versions: raised deck (as shown here) standard coach roof, pop-tops, those with shallow draft or keel/cb.

Massive crane arrives to clean up Baltimore bridge collapse

A floating crane that officials said was one of the largest on the East Coast arrived at the site of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore on Friday, part of a large flotilla being assembled to clear debris that has crippled one of the nation’s largest ports and spread economic pain.

The Chesapeake 1000, which can lift 1,000 tons, will play a featured role in the cleanup from the disaster , but Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said Friday it will be joined by 10 other cranes, 10 tugs, nine barges, eight salvage vessels and five Coast Guard boats that will arrive over the next several days.

But even as officials raced to restore access to the Port of Baltimore, which generates thousands of jobs and handles tens of billions of dollars worth of cargo each year, the Chesapeake 1000 sat idle Friday, underscoring the complexity, length and danger of the operation.

Officials said they couldn’t move forward with clearing debris until they had finished a careful assessment of the scene, where massive trusses sit twisted in 50-foot water and a large section of the Key Bridge is draped precariously across the bow of the cargo ship that struck it Tuesday.

The assessment included divers below the surface of the Patapsco River, survey boats and an FBI helicopter, which buzzed over the 985-foot Dali container vessel collecting images that would be used to figure out how to carefully and safely remove the steel and concrete.

Moore once again declined to offer a timeline to recover from the disaster, as he and other officials have repeatedly done in the days after the disaster.

“It is not going to be days or weeks or months,” he said. “This is going to take time.”

He and other state and federal officials spoke at a windswept news conference near the towering Chesapeake 1000 at Tradepoint Atlantic, a deepwater port that is the only shipping site still accessible by water in the Port of Baltimore. Officials said they hope to tap it more extensively while the rest of the port remains inaccessible.

During the update, an official from the Environmental Protection Agency addressed one of the most pressing concerns about the Dali: its 764 tons of hazardous materials that remain onboard. Earlier in the week, an official from the National Transportation Safety Board said some of the 56 cargo containers containing corrosives, flammable liquids and lithium ion batteries had broken open, and she had noticed a sheen on the Patapsco.

Adam Ortiz, the EPA’s Mid-Atlantic regional administrator, said testing of the water did not show major issues.

“At this time, there is no indication of active releases from the vessel nor is there presence of materials that are hazardous to human health in the water,” Ortiz said.

Coast Guard Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath said at the news conference the recovery will move forward in three phases — clearing the channel so the port can resume some shipping, freeing the Dali and moving it, and finally clearing the remaining debris from the river and its bed.

Gilreath said that includes breaking “the bridge up into right-size pieces that we can lift.” Moore said the section of the Key Bridge resting on the Dali weighs between 3,000 and 4,000 tons , illustrating the challenge that lies ahead.

Col. Roland L. Butler Jr. of the Maryland State Police said divers are on standby to recover the bodies of bridge workers who were lost in the Patapsco River once conditions permit and the cleanup reaches the right point. Two of the six workers have been recovered. Officials said Wednesday night they had discovered what appeared to be a large vehicle stuck in the wreckage of the bridge at the bottom of the Patapsco.

Meanwhile, President Biden told reporters Friday that he plans to visit Baltimore next week with Moore.

Andrew Middleton, the director of a Christian ministry in Dundalk, Md., said he had been in touch with crew members aboard the Dali on Friday morning. The 21-member crew, most of whom are Indian, will remain on the ship.

Middleton said Friday that the crew requested WiFi and new SIM cards to communicate with family back home. The ministry director said he knows the crew has a TV on board but was trying to figure out whether they had access to live local programming.

Middleton said he is coordinating with other ministries and local companies to get WiFi, SIM cards and antennae to the crew members. He expected the first delivery to go out Saturday.

After federal officials allocated $60 million in emergency funding for bridge recovery Thursday, former Maryland governor and current Republican U.S. Senate candidate Larry Hogan said in an interview with Fox News that he would “push” his party to fully fund the reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

“I’m going to push them as hard as I can,” he said. “I already called a couple of Republican Senate leaders. I started working them.”

Emily Davies contributed to this report.

How it happened: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship . The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: Divers have recovered the bodies of two construction workers , officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . A mayday call from the ship prompted first responders to shut down traffic on the four-lane bridge, saving lives.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, which provides about 20,000 jobs to the area . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and other goods .

Rebuilding: The bridge, built in the 1970s , will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to rebuild , experts said.

Oakland’s Senior Guard Jack Gohlke is just one of the countless reasons why America loves March Madness.

Amidst the chaos of the Round of 64 in this year’s March Madness tournament, Gohlke and his Oakland Golden Grizzlies provided the biggest upset of the tournament. On 48% shooting from beyond the arc as a team, and an overall offensive rating of 115.6, the Grizzlies were able to pull off the 14-3 upset over Kentucky.

Gohlke led the way with a 32-point performance on 10-20 shooting from three. His ten threes were one shy of the NCAA tournament record (Jeff Fryer in 1990), but he became one of 5 sharpshooters to surpass double figures in NCAA tournament history.

On that list with Gohlke is Fryer (11-15 from 3), Freddie Banks (10-19), Roburt Sallie (10-15), and Carsen Edwards (10-19), who all did it in different ways from distance.

While college basketball has always been less uniform than the NBA in terms of statistical trends, the growth of the three-point shot is as significant in the last decade as we’ve seen by the pros.

For example, if Gohlke’s 10-20 performance was inflated to the league average of the other 4 years that 10+ threes were made, here is what his numbers would look like.

1990 - 3 for 5

One of the best shows ever made lands on netflix today for the very first time, this popular google app will stop working in 3 days how to migrate your data, 15 places in the u s that just lost their total solar eclipse while texas gained, 1987 - 2 for 4, 2009 - 5 for 10, 2019 - 9 for 19.

Simply put, while Gohlke deserves his flowers for a historic performance, he also should pay respect to his elders for their outlier performances paving the way for himself and Edwards.

If it was not for the development of the three-point shot in collegiate hoops, Jack Gohlke probably would not have a Division 1 career at all, and Oakland Head Coach Greg Kampe would at least have to adjust his offensive philosophy.

This season, Oakland as a team attempted 24.9 threes per game, which were mostly compiled due to Gohlke’s efforts.

The fifth-year senior took just 8 two-point field goals the entire year, compared to 10.1 threes a night all season, hitting on 37.6% of his downtown attempts. This is why when he followed his 10-20 outing with a 6 for 17 night from distance against NC State (none of which included a 2-point FGA), Kampe did not bat an eye.

So, all of this with his beloved personality shown in his postgame media avails led him to be the main sensation out of the first weekend of March Madness (with DJ Burns Jr in his rearview mirror).

But, perhaps the nicest caveat to his instant stardom is the appreciation for the era of NIL deals we live in today, allowing his life changing moments to result in financial compensation.

In the coming weeks following his 32-point outing in the first round, Gohlke has partnered with Intuit TurboTax, Buffalo Wild Wings, Barstool Sports, OOFOS, The NIL Store and Formula Bot.

That’s not too bad for someone who went into this game admittedly knowing he may never play again if Oakland failed to pull off the upset over Kentucky.

The Five Minutes That Brought Down the Francis Scott Key Bridge

When a massive cargo ship lost power in Baltimore, crews scrambled to control the ship and to evacuate the bridge lying ahead. But it was too late.

Nicholas Bogel-Burroughs and Campbell Robertson reported from Baltimore, Annie Correal and Michael Forsythe from New York, and Mike Baker from Seattle.

Follow our live coverage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore .

“Hold all traffic on the Key Bridge.”

The terse command from an officer in Baltimore’s busy commercial shipping port was one of the first warnings of a disaster that experts now predict will transform shipping on the Eastern Seaboard and change how ships and bridges function around the world. But after the cargo ship Dali lost power early Tuesday, there were precious few minutes to act.

In those minutes, many people — from the ship’s crew, who sent out a mayday signal, to the transportation authority police officers, who stopped traffic heading onto the Francis Scott Key Bridge — did what they could to avert catastrophe, most likely saving many lives.

And yet — no matter what anyone did — several factors made catastrophe all but inevitable. When a ship of this size loses engine power, there is little to be done to correct its course, even dropping an anchor down. And the Key Bridge was particularly vulnerable. As long ago as 1980, engineers had warned that the bridge, because of its design, would never be able to survive a direct hit from a container ship.

The collision and subsequent collapse of the bridge swallowed up seven road workers and an inspector who could not be alerted and pulled off the bridge in time; two were pulled alive out of the water, but four others are still missing and presumed dead. Two bodies were retrieved on Wednesday, authorities said.

Also caught up in the disaster were the ship’s 21 crew members, all from India, who had prepared for a long journey to Sri Lanka on the Dali. While none of them were hurt, they would be held on board for more than a day as the ship sat in the harbor, the ruins of the bridge tangled around it, as authorities began their investigation.

The accident, the deadliest bridge collapse in the United States in more than a decade, will have a lasting impact on the Port of Baltimore, with its 8,000 workers, and industries that rely on the port, which is the leading American hub for auto and other wheeled equipment, said Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. transportation secretary, on Wednesday.

“It’s difficult to overstate the impact of this collision,” Mr. Buttigieg said.

He compared the Dali, roughly as long a city block, to the size of an American aircraft carrier.

“A hundred thousand tons, all going into this pier all at once,” he said of the impact on the bridge support structure.

Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board, which is leading the investigation into the accident, boarded the Dali on Tuesday night to gather documentation. They obtained data from the voyage data recorder, the equivalent of an aircraft’s black box, hoping that it could help investigators determine what led to the accident.

Mr. Buttigieg said that any private party found liable in the accident “will be held responsible.”

It was about half an hour past midnight on Tuesday when the Dali, loaded with cargo containers, departed its dock, guided by two tugboats, as is customary. On board was a local harbor pilot with more than 10 years of experience and deep familiarity with Baltimore’s port, as well as an apprentice pilot in training.

The sky above the Patapsco River was clear and still, lit by a full moon.

At 1:25 a.m., after the two tugboats detached and turned back, the Dali had accelerated to about 10 miles per hour as it approached the Key Bridge. But just then, according to a timeline released by the National Transportation Safety Board on Wednesday, “numerous audible alarms” started sounding on the ship.

For reasons still being investigated, the ship’s powerful propulsion system stopped. The lights flickered out.

The ship had a “complete blackout,” according to Clay Diamond, head of the American Pilots’ Association, who was briefed on the account of the pilot of the Dali. (The chair of the N.T.S.B., Jennifer Homendy, said officials were still trying to determine whether the power failure was complete.)

The harbor pilot noticed the ship starting to swing right, in the direction of one of the piers holding up the Key Bridge. At 1:26, he called for the tugs to return; he urged the captain to try to get the engine back up and directed the crew to steer hard left. As a last ditch measure, at 1:27, he ordered the crew to throw down the port anchor.

One of the tugboats, the Eric McAllister, turned around and raced back toward the ship.

But the failures onboard were cascading. The emergency generator had kicked on, sending a puff of thick smoke belching from the ship’s exhaust stack and briefly restoring the lights, radar and steering. It did not help. With no effective propulsion, the 95,000-ton ship had become an unstoppable object, drifting toward one of the most heavily traveled bridges in Baltimore.

On land, officers with the Maryland Transportation Authority moved swiftly into action. “I need one of you guys on the South side, one of you guys on the North side, hold all traffic on the Key Bridge,” someone is heard saying on the audio recording of emergency radio traffic that night. “There’s a ship approaching that just lost their steering. So until they get that under control, we’ve got to stop all traffic.”

Vehicles were held on either side of the bridge as the ship continued its inexorable drift toward the 1.6-mile-long span.

A minute later, the officers turned their attention to several workers, some of them immigrants from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico, who were still laboring on the bridge in the chilly darkness, taking advantage of the light traffic at night to fix potholes.

“There’s a crew up there,” one officer is heard saying on the audio recording of the radio exchange between officers. “You might want to notify whoever the foreman is, see if we could get them off the bridge temporarily.”

But even then, the ship was striking the bridge. Almost at once, the pier buckled and collapsed, twisting over the ship, with its cargo containers stacked high on the deck. Then the rest of the bridge went, breaking into sections as it plummeted and splashed into the dark river waters below.

“The size and weight of these ships make them really difficult, even with propulsion, to stop them,” said Stash Pelkowski, a professor at State University of New York Maritime College and a retired Coast Guard rear admiral. With no power, he said, “There was very little the pilot or the crew on the Dali could do.”

The collapse had happened in seconds. Except for the stumps of the piers, the central span of the bridge had plunged into the frigid river — where divers would spend the whole day searching amid twisted metal for survivors — by 1:29 a.m.

“Dispatch, the whole bridge just fell down!” an officer called out. “Whoever, everybody, the whole bridge just collapsed.”

Stray ships had long been seen as a risk to the Key Bridge. Just a few years after the Baltimore structure was constructed in 1977, a vessel crash knocked down the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay, Fla., killing 35 people.

Officials acknowledged that the Key Bridge would not be able to withstand that kind of direct hit from a heavy cargo vessel. “I would have to say if that ship hit the Bay Bridge or the Key Bridge — I’m talking about the main supports, a direct hit — it would knock it down,” John Snyder, the director of engineering for the state Toll Facilities Administration told the Baltimore Sun at the time.

But building a bridge that could withstand such an impact was simply not economically feasible, he said. When the bridge was built, cargo ships were not the size they are today. A much smaller freighter did hit the bridge in 1980 , but the bridge stood strong.

Minutes after the bridge collapsed on Tuesday, both tugboats that had accompanied the Dali arrived on scene, followed soon by the Coast Guard and the Baltimore City Fire Department.

Two of the workers who had been on the bridge were rescued from the water. The others could not be found.

Jack Murphy, who owns Brawner Builders, the company whose workers had been on the bridge, got a phone call about the collapse and raced to the area, about a 30-minute drive away. He stayed by the bridge all night, and eventually began making calls to the men’s families.

Two workers’ bodies were discovered in a red pickup truck found near the bridge debris, police said Wednesday. They were identified as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, an immigrant from Mexico, and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26, a native of Guatemala.

About two miles from the bridge, Andrew Middleton had been lying awake when he heard the crash. He first thought it was thunder, maybe a low-flying jet.

It was only when he awoke a few hours later that he saw the news of the collapsed bridge. “I thought to myself, I was just with those guys yesterday,” he said.

Mr. Middleton, who runs Apostleship of the Sea, a program that ministers to sailors coming through the port, had driven the ship’s captain and a few crew members to Walmart on Monday to stock up on goods for the 28-day voyage ahead — toothpaste, snacks, clothes, Bluetooth speakers.

He recalled the captain telling him their next port was Sri Lanka, but that they were taking a longer route, down around South Africa, in order to avoid recent Houthi attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea.

Mr. Middleton immediately messaged the crew on WhatsApp after hearing the news on Tuesday, he said, and “they responded within a few minutes saying that everyone was OK,” he said.

Around the site of the bridge collapse, firefighters and rescuers in diving gear were swarming around the shore, followed by news crews. John McAvoy, who owns a nearby restaurant, had driven over with hot meals — chicken, crab balls and pretzel bites — to hand out to the crews.

But by nightfall on Tuesday, officials had called off the rescue efforts and said they would switch to searching for bodies. “The water’s deep, visibility’s low, it’s cold as I-don’t-know-what,” said Kevin Cartwright, a spokesman for the Fire Department.

The signs of all that had changed were only starting to become clear on Wednesday. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said it was mobilizing more than 1,100 specialists to clear the wreckage of the bridge and unblock the Port of Baltimore’s shipping lane. In the meantime, Mr. Buttigieg, the secretary of transportation, said the East Coast would have to rely more heavily on ports outside Baltimore.

Mr. McAvoy said the tragedy would ripple over the port for years.

Fishing crews always have found their way home following the Key Bridge, he said. “It’s going to change a lot of things for a lot of people.”
