Fantastic venue, attended a party never been there before. What a find, right on the water with a large deck, pity it was cold. Could have done with a heater or two outdoors. Beach on either side, could ask for a better location. Staff were amazing, the food just kept coming and drinks were served really quickly, and there was constant tidy up.

La Mauvaise Réputation

French gypsy swing virtuosos La Mauvaise Réputation are Australia’s most authentic interpreters of the wild rhythms and passion of 1930s Parisian hot jazz and the beautiful melodies of classic French chanson – sung en français, bien sûr.

Featuring a core line-up of vocals/guitar (Paul Gillett), accordion (Salvatore Greco) and double-bass (Enzo Ruberto) the group is joined regularly by some of Australia’s best gypsy jazz guitarists to make up a quartet. The group’s repertoire specialises in the timeless songs of Edith Piaf, Charles Trenet and Serge Gainsbourg and Jean Sablon and the unique sounds of Django Reinhardt.

The Beez - 3rd May 2024

03/05/2024 at 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm, the beez – 3rd may 2024.

The Beez. An accordion, a guitar, two voices- and a drummer trapped in a tiny red box. Bitingly satirical but eminently danceable, featuring a wealth of home-grown material from the sublime to the ridiculous, the teutonic to the titillating. And a treasure trove of bizarre and infinitely creative renditions of songs you thought you knew- Ramstein to Rogers and Hammerstein, Oils to Icehouse, newly invented.

An eclectic blend? No, it ́s a dog ́s breakfast- and never tasted so good. Ten years as performer for and artistic director of Berlin ́s legendary Chamaeleon Theatre, Deta C. Rayner ́s commanding yet endearing stage presence and vamp-voiced accordion ooze cabaret sensibilities. Deta has dragged the accordion kicking and screaming (with joy!) into the 21st century. Her extraordinary playing style has reinvented what is possible on this once reviled- and now revered- instrument.

It ́s a supremely entertaining smorgasbord augmented by Rob Rayner ́s breezy, sleazy rock guitar and bass baritone vocals. Rob ́s 30-odd years in Berlin- and the fall of the Berlin Wall and subsequent influx of astounding musicians- lends a distinctly Balkan flavour to his already esoteric post-punk heritage.

After years of Berlin-based wanderlust The Beez have finally found their home in Katoomba, Australia. Whether ABC TV ́s Spicks and Specks or Folk Festivals from Vancouver Island to Woodford, Dublin to Port Fairy, The Beez deliver a diizzying pastiche of comedy and music that leaves their audiences reaching for the German-English phrasebook. The Beez- in one word? “Prost!”

That’s the story so far according to their email, I get the feeling that there a lot more and that is going to make for a great evening

Play It Martha - 24th May 2024

24/05/2024 at 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm, play it martha – 24th may 2024.

I have finally been lucky enough to get Patrick Evans and Cora Browne to come along and play a show.

Play It Martha

Play It Martha is the newest creative incarnation for the original works of Patrick Evans and Cora Browne. These two talented musicians have come together to share their love of music, ancient and modern, with the world as Play It Martha.

Their debut album Flying Dream is launching in early 2024. Well known on the Victorian folk scene they share a love of harmony, well-crafted song and the odd rollicking chorus. For Flying Dream Pat and Cora have pulled together a lively bunch of musicians to support their explorations of life, love, long weekends and the magic of dreams.

The vibe is playful, yet sincere, honouring the folk tradition with new interpretations of some modern classics while adding to the genre with fresh original songs. With two voices, guitars, driving fiddle and one purple bodhrán, Play It Martha are delighted to take you with them on an inspiring, original and engaging musical adventure.

Looking forward to this one…

Here is Patrick to give you a taste

Cadabria - Suzette Herft - 14th June 2024

14/06/2024 at 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm, cadabria – suzette herft – 14th june 2024.

port melbourne yacht club parking

A double header tonight. Both long time favourites of mine.

Dayle Alison Walker is a singer/songwriter, plays piano and guitar. In early years was with Mushroom records, performed on TV shows, in cabaret, jazz piano bars and studio sessions. Returning to music after a long break she’s back to share her mellow, soulful, country, folky, jazzy songs in venues in Melbourne & at festivals.

Cathy Beckham loves harmony. She plays uke, guitar, and percussion and sings like an angel. Cathy has performed solo and with many musical combos: in pubs, cabaret, a bush band, at folk festivals, recordings and has presented music sessions to children for 20+ years. She currently creates music therapy & choirs in Aged Care.

Brian Norris plays bass and guitar. Originally playing in rock bands in England, he has been a member of various folk groups, including Triptych, since coming to Australia. Brian has played the big festivals, and can be found playing at folk gatherings, performing with bush bands, flautists & on recording sessions.

These 3 seasoned performers collaborate to perform originals and favourite songs by others. Splendid harmonies, some happy sing-a-longs and soulful stories, you’ll love Cadabria!

 Suzette Herft

Soulful, sublime and shining! Three words sum up this Melbourne based, exotic singer-songwriter from Sri Lanka.

Suzette Herft is a contemporary troubadour and award winning songwriter with a sublime voice. She shines with a natural grace and presence that lights up any stage. Her live performances captivate the audience and she has been described as ‘charismatic… with her heart in tune with her world’ (The Australian Songwriter – Australian Songwriters’ Association).

When Suzette sings, she invites the listener to dive deeper into the heart of what it is to be human and the grace to overcome life’s obstacles. She turns the looking glass onto her own life with lessons of finding joy from sorrow and distilling the light from the darkness. Her music is indeed medicine for the soul!

Suzette has won wide acclaim for her brilliant tribute show to her hero – Joan Baez for being the ‘voice for the voiceless’ at numerous festivals around Australia, including standing ovations at recent Port Fairy Folk Festivals. With her band, she has recently breathed life into the songs and the story of Emmylou Harris – another performer she admires.

Suzette is also masterful facilitator of singing sessions and a ‘song catcher’ with her wide-ranging repertoire and her passion for inclusivity, ‘giving everyone a voice’. Suzette is passionate about songwriting and inspired by a visit to Nashville, she founded the Melbourne Songwriters Guild. She has been a regular songwriting tutor at The Lake School for Celtic Music and other community groups.

I always love hearing these performers sing and play, it’s always a great night

Bush Gothic - 23rd August 2024

23/08/2024 at 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm, bush gothic – 23rd august 2024, bush gothic.

The Short version…

Bush Gothic wander through the dankest, weirdest corners of the trad song books and emerge as post modern slash anti establishment slash folk feminists. Are they outsiders, lurking on the cultural fringe? Or have they penetrated to the inner core of Australian identity? They won the Australian Folk Music 2022 Award for Best Band, are multiple Best Music Award winners at The Adelaide Fringe and received FIVE STARS from the BBC Music Magazine.

The LONG version…

port melbourne yacht club parking

With a 5 Star review in BBC Music Magazine and fRoots Album of the Year Runner Up, this daring trio have toured their modern imaginings of traditional Australian songs across the world. Band leader Jenny M. Thomas began her career as a classical violist before taking up touring as a fiddle-singer and Indian Karnatic violinist. Exposure to Australian folk music on the festival circuit compelled her to begin a bush band of her own, but one that would shake up the folkocracy by focusing on the female story and including a defiantly modern aesthetic to these achingly old songs.

It was 2009 when fiddle-singer and composer Jenny M. Thomas began a series of urban bush band sessions – gigs where every week a new crop of musicians would join her ‘bush band’ and improvise through a playlist of traditional Australian songs. Out of this series she picked only the bravest musicians to form her band, named after the genre of Victorian-era literature titled ‘Bush Gothic’. Their first gig was a live-to-air broadcast on ABC Radio National’s ‘The Music Show’.

The individual members of the band, Jenny M. Thomas (fiddle-singer, piano, spoons) Chris Lewis (drumkit) and Dan Witton (double bass), have worked as composers, instrumental soloists and theatre performers across the globe with companies including Circus Oz, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, The Australian Opera, Strange Fruit, Meow Meow and Chamber Made Opera.

The release of their debut album, Bush Gothic (2011), saw the band perform in historic gaols, concert halls and goldfields across Australia. With the addition of The Lonely String Quartet, Bush Gothic presented their Victorian Heartbreak Project at The Melbourne Recital Centre and the repertoire was then further developed to form their internationally critically acclaimed album The Natural Selection Australian Songbook (2014). This album was first conceived when the band were artists in residence at the historic Fryerstown School in Victoria, site of the 1853 gold rush.

In 2016 Bush Gothic made their international debut, taking these old Australian songs back to the motherland of the United Kingdom in celebration of the release of their second album The Natural Selection Australian Songbook. The album was awarded one of the BBC Music Magazine’s Best World Music Albums 2016 and English folk stars The Unthanks invited Bush Gothic to return to England to perform at Homegathering Festival in 2017 when they also added New Zealand and Ireland to their touring schedule.

The British National Rural Touring Forum invited the band to tour English Village Halls in 2018 which they then followed up with a performance at the Rajasthan International Folk Festival in India. To celebrate the release of their third album Beyond The Pale, Bush Gothic embarked on an Australia wide tour including their debut at Ukaria Cultural Centre.

When unable to tour in 2020 the band embarked on a new collaboration with Welsh fiddler & composer Angharad Jenkins. The largest festival of competitive music and poetry in Europe, the Welsh National Eisteddfod had invited them to present at their online festival but, on the day of their film shoot, lockdown was announced for Melbourne. There was three weeks to come up with another plan and deliver the presentation. Jenny M. Thomas began learning Welsh, her 16 year old son turned his clay animation studio over to film clip production and a team of ten artists across two hemispheres and four homes collaboratively composed and recorded new arrangements of old Welsh songs with accompanying art films. The result was hailed as ‘Brilliant’ by BBC Radio Cymru and  ‘Bringing a new sound to old Welsh ballads…something I have been desperate to play.’  from BBC Radio 3, Music Planet.

The collaboration continues in 2022 with the release of their debut EP I Fyw I Fôd and live performances at the Welsh National Eisteddfod.

This is a n exciting and inventive band and I am looking forward to hearing them play at APPL

Expert Advice

As a wedding professional, Port Melbourne Yacht Club offers expert advice to help couples plan their perfect day. Ask a question or read their expert advice.

How do I choose the right sized venue for 100 guests?

Do you have any tips on how to choose the right sized venue for this number of guests?

Try not to overwhelm yourself by visiting too many venues. Choose your top five or six and go from there. Seeing too many venues will just cause your brain to have an “information overload" and leave you more confused than when you started out. It's important to choose a venue that suits you taste and matches the style or theme of your vision.

There are going to be pros and cons with any venue you find so work out your top five most important aspects and go with the venue that suits these best. The venue should evoke some sort of emotional connection and get you excited about the wedding day. It also helps to choose a venue with a long standing reputation for high quality service and great staff.

And finally, if in doubt, ask! Dont assume or leave anything to chance. If you have any concerns, address them during the site inspection or as soon as possible before confirming your booking with a deposit.

What should I consider when looking for my wedding venue?

I'm about to start looking for my wedding venue. What are some things that I need to consider when searching for the perfect venue?

How far in advance should I book my wedding venue?

I don't want to miss out on my dream venue. So, how far in advance should I make the booking?

With Saturdays being the most popular day to get married, and considering there are only 52 weekends in a year, it doesn't leave much leeway with most couples also vying for the same dates . We suggest trying to booking 12 to 18 months ahead especially if you are looking at the peak months of November, February and March.

Winter weddings tend to be a little more short lead and we suggesting tying to secure a date over the cooler months at least 8 to 12 months out. If you can be more flexible, and your preferred date at your chosen venue is booked, consider an off-peak night of Friday or Sunday which are usually the next days to book at the Saturday. Most venues will also offer off-peak rates or reduced minimum numbers which can also be a huge benefit if you're looking at a smaller celebration.

Tips from our specialists

Just need a quote? It helps to provide...

  • Your contact details
  • Mention your preferred wedding date options and approximate number of guests
  • Mention how many hours you require the venue for
  • Ask about security, catering options, and alcohol licensing

Yin Yoga is a slow paced style of yoga, targeting deep connective tissue. Being a slower and more meditative style of yoga, it gives you opportunity to turn inward.By stretching and deepening into poses, we’re opening up any blockages and releasing that energy to flow freely.
