Insider Today

Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, the future king of Saudi Arabia, has detained three members of the Saudi royal family for "unexplained reasons," The New York Times' David D. Kirkpatrick and Ben Hubbard reported on Friday.

The crown prince, known as MBS, arrested senior royal Prince Ahmed bin Abdulaziz, former crown prince Mohammed bin Nayef, and his younger brother, Prince Nawaf bin Nayef, a relative and a person close to the royal family told the Times.

The 34-year-old heir will ascend to the throne after the death of his father, 84-year-old King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. The crown prince has become a controversial global political figure, particularly so in the fall of 2018, when he faced global outcry over the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi , who the CIA later concluded was assassinated on the prince's orders . In January, he was accused of hacking the personal cell phone of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos , an allegation the  Saudi embassy called "absurd."

Prince Mohammed is known for his lavish spending. He has bought a $500 million yacht , a $300 million French chateau , and a $450 million Leonardo da Vinci painting. According to one estimate, the Saudi royal family — which has about 15,000 members — is worth up to $1.4 trillion .

The royal family's empire includes Saudi Aramco , the massive, state-owned oil company became  the most valuable company in the world when it went public in December 2019.

Here's a look at the lavish — and controversial — lifestyle of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Mohammed bin Salman is the 34-year-old crown prince of Saudi Arabia.

king salman yacht

He was born to King Salman and his third wife, Fahda bint Falah, in 1985.

He was named crown price in June 2017 after his father, King Salman, decided to remove Muhammad bin Nayef from the position.

Rumors later emerged that Mohammed bin Salman had secretly plotted to oust bin Nayef and take his place, The New York Times reported.

The prince has a bachelor's degree in law from King Saud University, the oldest university in Saudi Arabia.

king salman yacht

After graduating, he worked for several state agencies before being appointed as a special adviser to his father in 2009, who was serving as governor of Riyadh at the time.

In 2012, Prince Mohammed's father was named crown prince after the death of Nayef bin Abdul Aziz. Three years later, King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz died and the prince's father took the throne at the age of 79.

Prince Mohammed is not yet king, but he "essentially runs the country for his father," 84-year-old King Salman bin Abdulaziz, according to Bloomberg.

king salman yacht

The prince is known to be a "workaholic" who spends 18 hours of the day in his office, according to The Guardian.

But he reportedly doesn't take criticism well.

"People who tried to say no even gently and diplomatically faced consequences," one source from Saudi Arabia told The Guardian.

The total wealth of the Saudi royal family is unknown, but it could be worth as much as $1.4 trillion, according to House of Saud, an English-language Saudi Royal Family news resource.

king salman yacht

The royal wealth has been accumulated over decades of oil revenue-generated expansion.

There are about 15,000 members of the Saudi royal family, but the majority of the vast fortune is distributed among 2,000 of them , according to CNBC.

The British royal family, for comparison, is worth an estimated $88 billion .

The Saudi royal family's empire includes Saudi Aramco, the state-owned oil giant that reached a record-high valuation of $2 trillion after going public in December 2019.

king salman yacht

That makes it the most valuable company in the world , outstripping the market capitalizations of the biggest US giants, including Microsoft , Apple, and Google's parent, Alphabet.

It's worth more than Berkshire Hathaway, Facebook, and Amazon combined.

Saudi officials had been seeking a valuation of $2 trillion for the company, but most banks had pegged their initial estimates much lower, Bloomberg reported.

Aramco announced revenue of $68 billion in the first nine months of 2019, making it the most profitable company in the world.

Prince Mohammed and his father, King Salman, are often found in "a network of marble-columned palaces and countryside retreats" in Riyadh, according to The New York Times.

king salman yacht

Foreign dignitaries and politicians are often hosted at the Al-Yamamah Palace.

During a visit from President Obama to the opulent Erga Palace, reporters spotted gold-plated Kleenex dispensers and gold chairs, according to CBS News.

The royal family is rumored to own several other lavish residences around the world , including in Switzerland, London, France, and Morocco .

Prince Mohammed is known for his extravagant purchases.

king salman yacht

He's spent hundreds of millions on superyachts , private jets, helicopters, French chateaus, and rare paintings.

The crown prince reportedly owns a $500 million, 440-foot yacht named Serene, which includes multiple swimming pools and hot tubs, two helipads, a helicopter hangar, a gym, and a movie theater.

king salman yacht

The yacht can sleep 24 guests in 15 cabins.

The prince reportedly bought the superyacht after spotting it while vacationing in the south of France.

In 2015, Prince Mohammed bought a chateau in France for $300 million, which was dubbed "the world's most expensive home" by Fortune at the time.

king salman yacht

It wasn't until 2017 that news broke that it was the Saudi prince who had bought the Chateau  Louis XIV in Louveciennes, which is located west of Paris.

The 17th-century chateau reportedly includes fountains , a sound system, lights, and air conditioning that can all be controlled by an iPhone.

The lavish property also has a wine cellar, a movie theater, and a moat with a transparent underwater chamber.

The prince also picked up a Leonardo da Vinci painting for $450 million at a Christie's auction in 2017.

king salman yacht

Prince Mohammed made the winning bid on da Vinci's "Salvator Mundi" anonymously by phone.

The painting had been estimated to sell for around $100 million leading into the auction.

Prince Mohammed has been in the news in recent years for a variety of scandals.

Saudi Arabia has faced criticism for human rights abuses and repressive laws, such as the one that says all Saudi women must have a male guardian.

In February 2019, INSIDER published an investigation detailing how a Saudi app called Absher allows men in Saudi Arabia to track and control where women travel. The reporting prompted Apple CEO Tim Cook to launch an investigation into the app, which is sold on the App Store.

In the fall of 2017, the crown prince was reportedly behind a corruption crackdown that saw more than 200 people arrested and some detained for weeks in a Ritz-Carlton hotel. Saudi Arabia reportedly use coercion and physical abuse during the interrogations.

And according to Al Jazeera , the number of executions in Saudi Arabia has been on the rise: 133 people were executed in the first eight months after MBS became crown prince.

In the fall of 2018, the crown prince faced global outcry over the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi embassy in Istanbul.

king salman yacht

In November 2018, the CIA concluded the journalist was assassinated on the prince's orders .

Saudi Arabia has repeatedly  denied that the crown prince had any role in Khashoggi's death.

The Saudis denied for weeks that Khashoggi had been killed and repeatedly changed their story. The kingdom later announced that 18 people had been arrested in connection with the killing and said in January 2019 that prosecutors would be seeking the death penalty for five suspects.

While many world leaders have publicly condemned Prince Mohammed after Khashoggi's death, President Trump has said we may never know if Prince Mohammed ordered the killing of the journalist or not.

king salman yacht

After the CIA concluded that MBS ordered the killing of Khashoggi, Trump expressed support for MBS, Al Jazeera reported in December 2018 .

As Business Insider previously reported , Trump has had deep business ties with the Saudi Arabian court for more than two decades.

And Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law, has reportedly pushed for closer ties with Saudi Arabia and particularly with Prince Mohammed.

Kushner and the crown prince have had a close relationship for more than 2 years, Business Insider's Ellen Cranley reported.

At the G20 Summit in Argentina in December 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin was seen enthusiastically greeting the Saudi prince.

king salman yacht

Putin's enthusiastic greeting of the Saudi prince at G20 came right after other world leaders had condemned Saudi Arabia for the killing of Khashoggi.

Other world leaders appeared to ignore the crown prince in a group photo at the summit.

Beyond politics, the prince has ties to top US technology companies and has toured some of Silicon Valley's top firms, including Google and Apple.

king salman yacht

In the spring of 2018, Prince Mohammed met with Apple CEO Tim Cook , Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and Google cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

His west coast tour also included a stop in Seattle to meet with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund owns 5% of Uber, according to the ride-sharing company's most recent S-1 filing. The fund is also a top investor in Softbank's massive Vision Fund, which owns 16% of Uber as well as sizable stakes in companies like Slack, WeWork, and DoorDash.

In January 2020, the United Nations said it had received credible information that Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos had his phone hacked by Prince Mohammed.

king salman yacht

The UN called for an "immediate investigation by US and other relevant authorities" into the matter of Bezos reporting his phone being hacked.

According to the UN report, Bezos gave Prince Mohammed his personal phone number after the two attended a small dinner together in Los Angeles in April 2018. A month later, the crown prince allegedly sent a malicious file to Bezos' phone that stole data from the device.

The Saudi government has denied the allegations , calling them "absurd."

Art gallery employee with Salvator Mundi

Leonardo masterpiece 'being kept on Saudi prince's yacht'

Report of Salvator Mundi’s whereabouts confirms trend for great artworks to be displayed aboard billionaires’ superyachts

The world’s most expensive artwork – Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece Salvator Mundi – has reportedly been installed on Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman’s superyacht.

The location of the painting has been a mystery since it was sold for a record $450m (£350m) at auction by Christie’s in New York in 2017. On Monday, Artnet, an art industry news service, reported that the 500-year-old painting was being kept on Prince Mohammed’s €500m (£440m) 134m yacht, Serene.

Artnet said “two principals involved in the transaction” had told its reporter that “the work was whisked away in the middle of the night on MBS’s plane and relocated to his yacht, the Serene”.

The Salvator Mundi (Latin for Saviour of the World), which has been at the centre of a storm of controversy over suggestions that it was painted by one of Leonardo’s assistants and not the man himself, had been due to go on display at a Middle East outpost of Paris’s Louvre gallery last September.

“Having spent so long undiscovered, this masterpiece is now our gift to the world,” Mohamed Khalifa al-Mubarak, the chairman of Abu Dhabi’s department of culture and tourism, said in June 2018 . “We look forward to welcoming people from near and far to witness its beauty.”

However, just week’s before the scheduled unveiling on 18 September, the opening was postponed and has not been rescheduled.

The Saudi embassies in London and Washington did not respond to requests for comment on the painting’s whereabouts. A spokeswoman for Christie’s did not comment on the location of the painting or its provenance.

Earlier this month, one of the world’s leading experts on Leonardo criticised Christie’s for wrongly suggesting in its cataloguing of the Salvator Mundi that she was among scholars who had attributed the picture to the Renaissance master. Dr Carmen Bambach, a curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, told the Guardian: “That is not representative of my opinion.”

Mohammad bin Salman

The identity of the buyer remained a secret following the auction until the New York Times disclosed that that it had been bought by a little-known member of the Saudi royal family, Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Farhan al-Saud. He is a close friend of Prince Mohammed and after the auction was named the country’s first minister of culture.

MarineTraffic, an app that tracks vessels including superyachts, shows that Serene is currently at Port Said, an Egyptian city where the the Suez Canal meets the Mediterranean Sea.

The Guardian has previously reported on the growing trend for billionaires installing world-renowned masterpieces on their superyachts . Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the owner of Manchester City and deputy prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, has several hundred pieces aboard his £350m superyacht, Topaz.

A reporter looking in the windows of Joe Lewis’s £200m superyacht, Aviva , when it moored on the Thames last year, discovered that Francis Bacon’s Triptych 1974–1977 was hanging in gold frames on the lower deck. The painting, whose subject is the death of Bacon’s lover George Dyer, was included in Tate Britain’s blockbuster Bacon and Freud exhibition last summer.

The British-born Lewis, who has an estimated £3.9bn fortune, owns a majority stake in Tottenham football club and lives in the tax-friendly Bahamas, has what he describes as “one of the largest private art collections in the world”. It includes paintings by Degas, Freud, Klimt, Modigliani, Matisse and Picasso, and sculptures by Moore, Degas and Di Modica. It is not known which are kept on his yacht.

World’s Most Expensive Home? Another Bauble for a Saudi Prince

A $300 million chateau is one of a string of extravagant purchases for a prince who is cracking down on ill-gotten wealth and preaching fiscal austerity.

  • Dec. 16, 2017

LOUVECIENNES, France — When the Chateau Louis XIV sold for over $300 million two years ago, Fortune magazine called it “the world’s most expensive home,” and Town & Country swooned over its gold-leafed fountain, marble statues and hedged labyrinth set in a 57-acre landscaped park. But for all the lavish details, one fact was missing: the identity of the buyer.

Now, it turns out that the paper trail leads to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, heir to the Saudi throne and the driving force behind a series of bold policies transforming Saudi Arabia and shaking up the Middle East.

The 2015 purchase appears to be one of several extravagant acquisitions — including a $500 million yacht and a $450 million Leonardo da Vinci painting — by a prince who is leading a sweeping crackdown on corruption and self-enrichment by the Saudi elite and preaching fiscal austerity at home.

king salman yacht

“He has tried to build an image of himself, with a fair amount of success, that he is different, that he’s a reformer, at least a social reformer, and that he’s not corrupt,” said Bruce O. Riedel, a former C.I.A. analyst and author . “And this is a severe blow to that image.”

The story of Chateau Louis XIV, as pieced together through interviews and documents by The New York Times, unfolds like a financial whodunit, featuring a lawyer in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and a fixer for the very rich from the Mediterranean nation of Malta. Even Kim Kardashian made a cameo at the chateau, reportedly considering it for her wedding to Kanye West.

The ownership of the chateau, in Louveciennes, France, near Versailles, is carefully shrouded by shell companies in France and Luxembourg. Those companies are owned by Eight Investment Company, a Saudi firm managed by the head of Crown Prince Mohammed’s personal foundation. Advisers to members of the royal family say the chateau ultimately belongs to the crown prince.

Eight Investment was the same company that backed Prince Mohammed’s impulse buy of the 440-foot yacht from a Russian vodka tycoon in 2015. The company also recently bought an 620-acre estate in Condé-sur-Vesgre, known as Le Rouvray, an hour’s drive from Paris. The chateau’s architect is refurbishing the manor house there and building structures for an apparent hunting compound, according to permit records at the local town hall.

Versailles Style, Modern Amenities

The chateau’s developer, Emad Khashoggi, nephew of the late billionaire arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi , bulldozed a 19th-century castle in Louveciennes to make way for the new chateau in 2009. To the naked eye it appears to have been built in the time of Versailles, the royal palace that set a world standard for gaudy luxury. But the 17th-century design camouflages 21st-century technology. The fountains, sound system, lights and whisper-silent air conditioning can all be controlled remotely by iPhone.

Along with more standard flourishes for top-of-the-line properties, like a wine cellar and movie theater, the rotunda features an exquisite fresco on the ceiling while the moat includes a transparent underwater chamber with sturgeon and koi swimming overhead. A statue of Louis XIV made of Carrara marble stands watch over the grounds.

“The idea is tacky, and then once you visit it isn’t,” said Marianne Merlino, who was the town’s deputy mayor during construction. “Like in Versailles, that was way over the top too, and like Louis XIV, he achieved something really quite incredible.”

An Assertive Young Leader

In less than three years in the public eye, Crown Prince Mohammed, 32, has forged a reputation as an assertive — some critics say reckless — leader. He launched an air campaign in Yemen and spearheaded the blockade of Qatar. Yet he also appears to have won the popular support of many young Saudis for reining in the country’s religious police, promising to give women the right to drive and announcing that movie theaters will be allowed to open again.

But his swift rise has ruffled some of his elders , especially when he shoved aside his older cousin to become crown prince . He has come under even more scrutiny since the arrests last month of nearly a dozen of his royal cousins and hundreds of other businessmen or officials, who have been detained at the Ritz-Carlton in Riyadh, now the world’s most luxurious jail. The government characterized the arrests as a crackdown on corruption but critics have called it a political purge and a shakedown .

Crown Prince Mohammed, in an interview with The New York Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman, said he expected the state to recoup some $100 billion in settlements from the detained elite. But he dismissed as “ludicrous” accusations that the arrests were politically motivated, saying that was the only way to root out corruption and self-dealing.

“So you have to send a signal, and the signal going forward now is, ‘You will not escape,’ ” he said.

Neither he nor the Saudi government responded to requests for comment for this article.

Austerity at Home, Luxury Abroad

Even before the crackdown, unbridled spending by the king’s family, whose income sources remain opaque, had raised eyebrows. With the price of oil, the main source of the country’s wealth, having plummeted from record highs in the past decade, the government has tried to close yawning budget deficits with financial discipline.

But last year, even as the government canceled a quarter of a trillion dollars’ worth of projects to rein in deficits, King Salman was building a luxurious new vacation palace on the Moroccan coast .

The year before, shortly after he was named deputy crown prince , Prince Mohammed was vacationing in the south of France when he fancied a magnificent yacht with two swimming pools and a helicopter.

A trove of records leaked from a Bermuda law firm, known as the Paradise Papers, reveal how platoons of lawyers, bankers and accountants in Germany, Bermuda and the Isle of Man worked furiously to quickly transfer ownership to Eight Investment. The price, according to drafts of the contract, was 420 million euros, or $494 million in today’s dollars — even more than that for the chateau.

Emails between the lawyers said the yacht would be owned by a Cayman Islands company called Pegasus VIII, which was created in 2014 when Prince Mohammed was reported to have bought another yacht, renamed the Pegasus VIII . That yacht cost about $60 million, according to the seller, Ronald Tutor, a California investor.

Last month, Leonardo da Vinci’s painting “Salvator Mundi” sold for $450.3 million to an anonymous buyer, the highest price for any work of art sold at auction. The buyer, The Times found , turned out to be an obscure Saudi prince with close ties to Crown Prince Mohammed. People familiar with the sale and American intelligence officials said he was acting on behalf of the crown prince.

The Saudi government later disputed that report , saying variously that the Saudi buyer acted as an agent for Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates, where the painting will hang at the new branch of the Louvre, or that the crown prince had purchased the painting to give to Abu Dhabi. People familiar with the details insist the crown prince was the real buyer at the time of the sale.

While the spending habits of Saudi princes have been chronicled for decades, the Paradise Papers as well as the Panama Papers — leaked records obtained by a German newspaper, Süddeutsche Zeitung , which shared them with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and other news organizations — provide new details. Crown Prince Mohammed’s wealth, vast as it is, represents only a portion of the riches accumulated by King Salman’s branch of the House of Saud.

In addition to two stately homes in London connected to King Salman, his son, Prince Turki bin Salman, is listed as the guarantor of an Isle of Man company that sold a penthouse apartment a short walk from Westminster Abbey for over $35 million in 2014. Prince Sultan bin Salman, a half brother of the crown prince and the first Arab in outer space, purchased a luxury Boeing jet that typically costs more than $100 million through an offshore shell company.

King Salman’s vast compound on Spain’s southern coast is owned by two Panamanian companies, which are in turn controlled by a Luxembourg company belonging to the king and his children. Another holding company, based in the tiny principality of Liechtenstein, owns the king’s villa on the French Riviera, where the actress Rita Hayworth celebrated her marriage in 1949.

Peeling the Layers of Ownership

The two new French properties, Chateau Louis XIV and Le Rouvray, are owned by two French companies. Those companies are owned by a Luxembourg company, Prestigestate SARL, which is in turn owned by Eight Investment. Thamer Nassief, who lists his occupation on LinkedIn as “President of Crown Prince Private Affairs,” is a manager of both Prestigestate and Eight Investment.

Eight Investment, according to documents from the Bermudan law firm Appleby, is “owned by members of the Saudi Royal Family,” and its “wealth is derived from the King and the state.”

The three listed shareholders are Bader Al Asaker, who heads the crown prince’s personal foundation; Hazim Mustafa Zagzoog, the head of private affairs for King Salman; and Bader Ali al-Kohail, the Saudi ambassador to the Maldives, the Indian Ocean archipelago where the crown prince hosted a series of lavish parties featuring the rapper Pitbull and the South Korean singer Psy.

Chateau Louis XIV is one of several castles in Louveciennes, including one that belonged to Madame du Barry, the chief mistress of Louis XV. The town was later popular with Impressionist painters and is now an affluent suburb of Paris.

‘The Dream of His Life’

Town officials who worked with Mr. Khashoggi on the project described it as a near obsession. “Khashoggi said it was the dream of his life to make a thing like that,” said Ms. Merlino, the former deputy mayor. “He wanted to do the best in every field and he did.” Mr. Khashoggi declined through a spokeswoman to comment.

Some of the most lavish work, including the gilding, was performed by Atelier Mériguet-Carrère , which restored the Élysée Palace and the Palais Garnier opera house in Paris. The head of the company, Antoine Courtois, said he could not comment on the work because he had signed a nondisclosure agreement.

Hans Cauchi, a Maltese hospitality executive who caters to the superwealthy, applied for building permits to reconstruct the stables, a ruin on the edge of the estate, into a villa with a man-made pond, and to construct a new guardhouse modeled on a rustic property built for Marie Antoinette at Versailles.

Véronique Skrotzky, who used to forage for mushrooms when the run-down old chateau stood in its place, lamented that the owner never seemed to stay there, and that the property and grounds were closed to the public.

“Before it was a ruin only for ghosts,” she said. “Now it is brand new for ghosts.”

Nicholas Kulish reported from Louveciennes, and Michael Forsythe from New York. Reporting was contributed by Elian Peltier from Paris; Milan Schreuer from Brussels; Ben Hubbard from Beirut, Lebanon; and Mark Mazzetti from Washington.

Prince Mohammed bin Salman has become the heir apparent to take the Saudi Arabian throne.

Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the favorite son of Saudi Arabian King Salman, jumped the line of succession to become the Middle Eastern nation’s crown prince.

The 31-year-old has emerged as a reformer in a royal family with thousands of members vying for influence.

President Trump spoke with the new crown prince on Wednesday, and the two pledged to address conflicts in the Middle East and establish stability in the region.

Since emerging into a leadership role two years ago, he’s dealt with the nation’s shaky economy, while buying up high-priced yachts and hanging out with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

The new heir apparent to one of the most important U.S. allies in the Middle East has gotten a negative reputation, too.

A German intelligence agency flagged him as a potential threat to the region, and he might’ve been the deciding factor behind the execution of 47 Shia opponents.

Former Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef endured a two-year power struggle against his relative.

Saudi Arabia’s ‘Game of Thrones’

Prince Muhammad bin Nayef, the King’s nephew, was poised to take the thrown until Wednesday’s announcement.

When he was appointed crown prince in April 2015, bin Nayef was the first heir apparent in Saudia Arabia’s history who wasn’t a son of founding King Abdulaziz.

At the same time bin Salman was appointed deputy crown prince, and that December was appointed defense minister.

Thus began the power struggle that came to a boiling point this week, with bin Salman establishing himself as a young reformer.

Both took on more responsibilities for the octogenarian king. The Royal Bank of Canada and the Economist magazine referred to the budding power struggle as Saudi Arabia’s “Game of Thrones,” referring to the popular HBO show.

Bin Salman, seen last year in Washington, has been known to sport a more casual look when stateside.

Selling Silicon Valley

The now-crown prince ditched his traditional cloak for a techier look when he visited Silicon Valley last June.

Clad in the denim jeans and a blazer often associated with northern California, bin Salman met with leaders including Zuckerberg and pitched “Vision 2030,” a plan to modernize the nation’s economy.

Bin Salman’s trip served two purposes, reports at the time indicated. Along with selling Saudi Arabia as a nation ready for more business opportunities, Salman was pitching himself to the country’s high youth population as a plugged-in leader.

The prince reportedly bought the Serene yacht for $550 million the day he saw it.

Bin Salman was vacationing in the south of France in 2015 when he saw it: the Serene, one of the largest yachts in the world when it was built four years earlier.

He sent someone to buy the 440-foot ship, then owned by Russian Vodka bigwig Yuri Shelfer, according to the New York Times .

Within hours of dispatching the aide, bin Salman closed a deal to buy the luxurious yacht for about $550 million, the newspaper reported. Shelfer moved off the yacht that day.

In May 2016 bin Salman hosted then-Secretary of State John Kerry, an avid boater, on the yacht, the New York Times reported.

A German intelligence agency in part blamed the prince's increased power on Saudi Arabia's involvement in Yemen's civil war.

Yemen’s Civil War

Bin Salman was the focal point of a scalding memo released in December 2015 by Germany’s BND intelligence agency.

The report was circulated to media, a rarity for the agency, and referred to Saudi Arabia as a destabilizing force for the Middle East.

Its involvement in Yemen’s civil war earlier in the year was a bid to show that the Sunni kingdom was “willing to take military, financial and political risks in order not to fall behind in regional politics,” the memo claims .

Bin Salman was a deciding factor behind the intervention, the report found. Having just been named deputy crown prince at the time, BND said his ambitious power grab posed “a latent risk that in seeking to establish himself in the line of succession in his father’s lifetime, he may overreach.”

Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr's execution was met with protests, but bin Salman defended it.

Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr execution

King Salman sparked outrage — particularly from Iran — in January 2016 when he ordered the execution of Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr, who was killed along with 46 other people.

Tensions have been high between Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shia Iran.

Bin Salman, speaking with the Economist, said the anger was a “strange thing,” and defended the mass execution.

“The court did not, at all, make any distinction between whether or not a person is Shia or Sunni,” he said, according to the Independent . “They are reviewing a crime, and a procedure and a trial and a sentence, and carrying out the sentence.”

He added that he hoped Iran wasn’t the Islamist kingdom’s worst enemy, “Because a war between Saudi Arabia and Iran is the beginning of a major catastrophe in the region… for sure we will not allow any such thing.”

Inside Mohammed bin Salman’s amazing £44million superyacht with cinema room and £330m Leonardo da Vinci painting on wall

SAUDI Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is the proud owner of a £44million superyacht.

The impressive 78m vessel - which comes with a hefty price tag - boasts everything from a 13-seat cinema to a helipad that doubles up as a golf driving range.

The superyacht Pegasus VIII in all its glory

There is even the world's most expensive painting on board, an original by Leonardo da Vinci called Salvator Mundi - which is Latin for Saviour of the World

Bin Salman reportedly bought it for around £330million at Christie's in 2017, and it is thought to hang on one of the walls of his yacht.

The yacht, named Pegasus VIII, was seen moored in the bay near Pendennis Point, in the picturesque town of Falmouth back in April.

Bin Salman, often referred to as MBS, is about to become the owner of Newcastle United.

And Toon stars will certainly want a tour of the boat that has accommodation for up to 12 guests and has a crew of 26 people.

There is plenty to keep bin Salman's visitors entertained, as the yacht features a party deck complete with two bars, a dance floor, grand piano and barbecue - not to mention the 1,000 bottle tequila cellar.

The ship - which has a top cruising speed of 16 knots - also has its own gym and jacuzzi on the exterior deck, as well as a drydock which can be flooded to create a 12-metre swimming pool.

Bin Salman reportedly splashed £340m on a rare Leonardo da Vinci painting that is said to hang on a wall on his yacht

The sizeable ship was built by the Royal Denship, a Danish yacht construction company, and delivered in 2003, bought by Californian investor Ronald Tutor.

The yacht's exterior design and engineering are the work of Espen Oeino, the naval architect behind the looks of many world's biggest boats, while Francesco Zuretti put together the interior.

Tutor named it Pegasus V, having previously owned other yachts with the name Pegasus.

On Paris trip, Saudi crown prince stays in the "world's most expensive home" — a chateau built by Jamal Khashoggi's cousin

July 28, 2022 / 9:51 AM EDT / CBS/AFP

During his trip to France to meet President Emmanuel Macron, Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is staying at a lavish chateau dubbed "the world's most expensive home" when he purchased it in 2015.

The Chateau Louis XIV in Louveciennes outside Paris is a new-build mansion intended to mimic the extravagant luxury of the nearby Versailles Palace, once the seat of the French royal family.

The 7,000-square-meter property was bought by an undisclosed buyer in 2015 for 275 million euros ($300 million at the time), leading Fortune magazine to call it "the world's most expensive home."

FRANCE-SAUDI-DIPLOMACY-POLITICS

Bin Salman, 36, was reported two years' later by The New York Times to be the ultimate owner via a series of shell companies.

Local government officials confirmed to AFP that the controversial heir to the Saudi throne was staying at the property ahead of his dinner with Macron later on Thursday.

Reporters outside the perimeter wall saw security personnel in suits guarding the entrance and a large police presence, including half a dozen vehicles.

Macron and bin Salman were set to meet at the more modest Elysee presidential palace later Thursday for talks that critics in France view as inappropriate.

Bin Salman was judged by U.S. intelligence to have approved the gruesome murder and dismemberment of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018.

But after four years as an international pariah, the prince is being courted by Western leaders again as they urgently seek fresh energy supplies to replace lost Russian production.

In a twist of history, the Chateau Louis XIV was built by Khashoggi's cousin Emad Khashoggi who runs a luxury property development business in France.

The chateau features a nightclub, a gold-leafed fountain, a cinema, as well as an underwater glass chamber in the moat that resembles a giant aquarium with white leather sofas.

Photos on the website of Emad Khashoggi's company, Cogemad, also show a wine cellar, although alcohol is strictly prohibited in Saudi Arabia.

FRANCE-SAUDI-POLITICS-PROPERTY

Chateau Louis XIV was built in 2009 after a 19th-century castle on the plot was bulldozed.

Bin Salman's extravagant spending since emerging as the main powerbroker in Saudi Arabia has repeatedly made headlines.

The son of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud bought a $500-million yacht in 2015 and was also reported to be the mystery buyer of a $450-million Leonardo da Vinci painting in 2017.

The latter purchase has been officially denied.

In an interview with  60 Minutes , Bin Salman said he did not need to apologize for an opulent lifestyle.

"I'm a rich person and not a poor person. I'm not Gandhi or [Nelson] Mandela," he said. "I'm a member of the ruling family that existed for hundreds of years before the founding of Saudi Arabia."

He also said that he spends a large portion of his wealth on charity.

"I spend at least 51 percent on people and 49 on myself," he said.

Saudi Arabia's king has been quietly holed up in his desert palace for more than 480 days, as his heir MBS lies in wait for the throne

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

King Salman, 85, left Riyadh for his desert retreat in August 2020 and hasn't returned.

He is in ill health and rumors that he may soon die are once again swirling.

His son, Mohammed bin Salman, is heir to the Saudi throne and faces no public opposition.

As of Tuesday, King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud of Saudi Arabia has isolated himself in the kingdom's northwest desert for 482 straight days, reigniting concerns for his health while his heir, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, lies in wait for the throne.

Salman, 85, became king in 2015 following the death of his half-brother King Abdullah, and rumors of ill health have dogged him since. He is considered to have pre-dementia , according to several experts , and underwent gall-bladder surgery in July 2020.

The true state of his health is a closely guarded secret. In 2015, lawyers for the Saudi royal court told The Washington Post that the king was "most certainly not suffering from dementia or any other kind of mental impairment" after the newspaper reported that claim.

Following his gall-bladder surgery, King Salman flew to his palace at Neom, a newly-developed region on the Red Sea, for "rest and relaxation" on August 12, 2020, the official Saudi Press Agency said . At the time Saudi Arabia had just experienced the peak of its COVID-19 outbreak.

King Salman has remained in Neom since, chairing cabinet meetings by video link.

"He is in Neom because that is actually safer, because it limits access to him," Bernard Haykel, a leading expert on Saudi politics at Princeton University, told Insider. "They're being super careful because they want him to live on."

Though King Salman is secluded, he has the best medical care money can buy.

He is tended by more than a dozen medical experts from the Cleveland Clinic, a person with knowledge of the arrangement told Insider. The clinic, a leading US-based medical provider, has cared for many of the world's elite since the 1980s, including former President Donald Trump and numerous members of the Saudi royal family.

Speculation that King Salman may soon die is mounting once more, Haykel said: "There are always rumors toward the ends of the year."

King Salman's heir, 36-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed, or MBS, is widely expected to take the throne after his father's death.

"It would just be seamless," Haykel said.

Like his father, MBS has been keeping his distance from the bustle of Riyadh this year, spending much of his time in his palace in Neom or his yacht moored in the Red Sea, The Wall Street Journal reported. (MBS and King Salman's palaces in Neom are two of five palaces that the Saudi government commissioned for the royal family in 2018, Reuters reported .)

MBS has eliminated threats to his rule

MBS is already Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler, and the reality is that little will change in terms of the day-to-day running of the country when he becomes king.

Since becoming crown prince in June 2017, MBS has been busy remaking Saudi Arabia by reforming the economic , entertainment , and tourism sectors . Saudi Arabia's crown princes have historically wielded substantial power, but MBS has blown past many of his predecessors in terms of ambition and impact.

However, part of the reason MBS faces no public opposition to his rule is that he has cracked down on them.

In late 2017, dozens of royals were rounded up in Riyadh's Ritz-Carlton hotel as part of an anti-corruption drive led by MBS.

In 2020, Mohammed bin Nayef, the former crown prince, was arrested and placed under house arrest . Royals perceived to have links to bin Nayef, such as Prince Faisal bin Abdullah al-Saud and Princess Basmah bint Saud , have vanished from the public eye for more than a year.

In August 2020, Saad al-Jabri, a former top Saudi intelligence official who was close to bin Nayef, accused MBS of sending a hit squad to Canada to kill him two years prior. ( MBS has rejected those claims .)

Two weeks before the date al-Jabri said MBS tried to kill him, a group of Saudi state agents murdered the dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul. The CIA would later conclude that MBS likely ordered the hit.

As a result of the Khashoggi murder, President Joe Biden effectively demoted MBS, saying in February that Biden's counterpart was King Salman. By that logic, when MBS becomes king, he will become the US president's diplomatic equal.

Despite international backlash to his crackdown, all signs suggest MBS will be king when Salman dies.

"I don't expect there to be any resistance," Hakyel said.
