LIONHEART K-18
Harry H. Graves’ Lionheart races in the Newport fleet.
Designer: Ian Howlett | Joyce Brothers Marine
Year Built: 1979 | Other Names: Lionheart of Wessex (1980)
Length Overall: 19.43m | Waterline: 14.394m
Beam: 3.73m | Draft 2.82m | Displacement: 29.1 tons | Sail Area: 170sq. m
Construction: aluminum alloy
First Owner: British Industry 1500 Club (UK)
Current Owner: Harry H. Graves | Homeport: Newport, RI
1991-present Owned by Harry H. Graves, Lionheart is sailed and raced with the Newport 12 metre fleet.
1981-1983 Peter de Savary had her altered in 1982 and sailed her as a trail horse against Victory ’82 and Victory ’83 . By 1991 she was in the U.S. managed by Intrepid Marketing with her home port in Seekonk, MA.
1979-1980 Commissioned by the British Industry 1500 Club, Lionheart was a heavy displacement yacht built for the 1980 America’s Cup. Her most innovative feature was a “bendy” mast that increased her sail area by nearly 7%. She proved to be very fast in a straight line but had a lack of maneuverability when compared to other twelves. She was beaten by France II after a close fight at the 24th America’s Cup Challenger Trials.

- US-27 Enterprise – 1977 America’s Cup Contender
- US-30 Freedom – 1980 America’s Cup Winner
- US-46 America II – 1987 America’s Cup Contender
- US-42 America II, and K18 Lionheart
Twelve-meter boats have been called “the thoroughbreds of the sea,” an apt enough analogy, though the upkeep of a 12, is more expensive than that of any horse and included is the challenge of maintaining all working and nonworking parts of the boat in their original condition.
Derecktor New York, Derecktor’s corporate headquarters and original shipyard, was established in 1947 and for over 60 years has been building and maintaining sailboats, among them a number of 12 metres including the Cup winning Stars and Stripes, Interpid, Courageous and Valiant. Today the yard specializes in restoration, refit and service of fine sailboats and motor yachts.
The first a in long list of upcoming projects for Derecktor to complete for the 12 metre yacht Development Foundation was a refit for Lionheart. Lionheart – K-18 is the latest acquisition and restoration project to the growing 12mYDF fleet. K-18 is a modern America’s Cup class 12m designed by Ian Howlett and built by Joyce Marine Shipyards of Southhampton, UK in 1978 for Peter d’ Savary’s British America’s Challenger syndicate for the 1980 America’s Cup in Newport, Rhode Island. Lionheart is a single helm 67′ LOA, 54,000lb racing sloop with 12.5ft beam and draft of 9′, constructed of Aluminium.
Stephen Champtaloup Derecktor Mamaroneck Yard Manager summarized the job this way: “Lionheart’s recent work at the Mamaroneck yard was completed in time for race season. Most of the work we did was on the mast. We fabricated and installed external aluminum stiffeners on the mast to replace the internal stiffeners that had disintegrated over the years. To maximize the structural integrity of the mast, the stiffeners were glued and fastened rather than being welded. Other work included repairing the frozen trim tab, improving the existing bilge pump system and servicing the deck hardware.” commented
Patrick J. Sikorski, founder of the 12 metre program was thrilled with the results “From now on we will exclusively go to Derecktor to maintain our 12 metres. They are willing to turn the yard upside down to make sure our boats are ready for a race, and are capable of making any custom part on site. When we brought Lionheart to Derecktor she had been sitting on the hard for 5 years and it is a miracle they were able to revive her. 0nly a yard with the experience of Derecktor would be able to do that. ”
Derecktor Shipyards was established by legendary boat builder Robert E. Derecktor in 1947 and has become known worldwide for building a wide range of innovative and technically demanding vessels, from swift America’s Cup defenders to sturdy and reliable commercial workboats. Today, under the guidance of Bob’s sons, Paul and Tom, Derecktor Shipyards operates two impressive facilities: Derecktor New York in Mamaroneck, NY and Derecktor Florida in Dania, FL. Derecktor is known as an international leader in custom yacht and commercial construction in addition to providing full service, repair and refit capabilities at each of its yard.

LIONHEART Yacht – Enchanting $150M Superyacht
LIONHEART yacht is a 90-metre (295 ft) motor yacht built by Benetti in Italy. She was delivered in July of 2016 to the current owner who recently sold his brands Topshop and Selfridges, gaining him a net worth of US $2.4 billion.
LIONHEART features a sleek and modern design with space for up to 12 guests and 30 crew members. Her home berth lies in Monaco, which is where Green and his family spend most of their time.
LIONHEART yacht interior
The LIONHEART yacht features a lot of intricate details in its design that make her stand out from other comparable vessels on the market.
The interior of this yacht had exceptionally high-quality materials used in her construction, which gives her an elegant look and feel throughout all the different spaces on board.
The design house Green & Mingarelli is responsible for the luxurious interior design of LIONHEART.
The LIONHEART yacht can welcome 12 guests in her six cabins as well as a crew of 30 members of staff.
The interior of the yacht features a beach club, a beauty salon as well as expansive health and wellness facilities that include a spa, a hairdressing salon, a gym with a personal trainer, and a massage room with a masseur available at all hours.
The different floors of the yacht are connected by an elevator, and of course, the yacht has several pools, two of which are located on the upper decks.
A grand staircase is situated in the center of the yacht, which gives the vessel the likeness of a luxury hotel. The interior is furnished with exclusive furniture with dark wood and cream upholstery.
The yacht features several sizable chandeliers and other extravagant lighting fixtures. Everything about the interior of LIONHEART is lavish and luxurious, flaunting the US $150 Million price tag that this incredible vessel bears.
Specifications
The LIONHEART yacht is 90 meters (296 ft) long with a beam of 14.4 meters (47.3 ft) and a draft of 7.5 meters (24.9 ft). She was built by Benetti Yachts in Livorno, Italy, and launched in 2016.
At the time, LIONHEART was Benetti’s flagship and the largest yacht they had ever produced, overtaking NABILA (later TRUMP PRINCESS owned by Donald Trump).
Her gross tonnage lies at 2,990 GT, reaching cruising speeds of 15 knots and maximum speeds of 16 knots.
She is definitely not the fastest yacht in her size category, but her caterpillar engines are reliable and robust.
LIONHEART has an immense aluminum superstructure, and her hull was constructed from premium steel. Her traditional teak decks nicely contrast her white exterior.
The LIONHEART yacht is values at US $150 million and has annual running costs of US $10-$15 Million. She is not currently available for charter or for sale, although Green’s other yachts are.
The exterior of the LIONHEART yacht was designed by Stefano Natucci, who was also responsible for LIONESS V, Green’s previous yacht by Benetti.
Natucci has designed a total of 45 yachts, the LIONHEART yacht being the largest of his past projects.
The yacht is fitted with a sophisticated stabilizer system that ensures a comfortable experience for guests when at anchor or underway. She has a total of four decks featuring generous outdoor spaces.
The front of the bow has room for a small helipad where aircraft can land to pick up or drop off guests.
The top deck has an outdoor bar and jacuzzi, and behind the flybridge, there is a large pool.
All decks have luxurious outdoor seating with cream upholstery which is also the color of the crew uniforms aboard the LIONHEART yacht.
At the aft, the yacht has a sizable beach club and extendable swimming platform where water toys can be launched.
She also has several smaller, shaded decks with ample space for dining or parties. On both her port and starboard sides, Lionheart has small balcony decks which are attached to two of the suites.
Toys and equipment
The LIONHEART yacht carries several tenders, although her most memorable is a VanDutch 55 named Lioncub.
This tender has a black and white photograph of a lion painted on its side, making it stand out from traditional tenders and attracting yacht spotters.
LIONHEART also has a Pascoe Limousine, a Pascoe Beachlande, and a Pascoe Outboard Shuttle giving her passengers a wide selection of transportation options for shore leave or excursions.
Although exact details aren’t known, the yacht carries a large number of water toys, including jet skis and water bobs.
With a large swimming platform at the back of the vessel and an attached beach club with a lounge area, a luxury that might be desired is available to her guests.
Additional information
Construction for LIONHEART began in 2012 after the owner Green commissioned his third yacht from Benetti .
The two previous vessels were also named LIONHEART but have since been renamed LUMIERE and LIONESS V.
LUMIERE was built in 1999 and has a length of 49.9 meters (164 ft). Green sold her when he obtained LIONHEART V in 2006, and she is now available for charter.
LIONESS V has a length of 63.5 meters (208 ft) and was replaced by LIONHEART in 2016, 10 years after her launch.
Interestingly all three vessels can welcome the same number of guests, and only their amenities and length changed over the years.
LIONESS V is still owned by the Green family, more specifically Tina Green. This yacht is available for charter.

Illusion Yachts USA Inc.
There is no second place.™.
Why an Illusion Yacht?
The hull slips easily through the water, leaving a smooth wake. There is a slight increase in wind; she receives it, considers it, accepts it with the dignity and reserve that only a heavy displacement yacht can muster, and slowly heels in response. “Back-stay in –trim main and genoa–a little cunningham–that’s enough.” As you pull strings, you catch yourself giving orders to ten imaginary crew members who obligingly leap to their stations to perform their duties while this miniature version of a 12-Meter presses the water aside and slowly accelerates, bow and stern waves building up as they would on the real thing. Weight give 12-Meters their special character, their wonderful sensation of power, their ability to carry their way forward when brought head to wind in match race pre-start maneuvers. Those feelings are faithfully reproduced in the Illusion Twelve.
There is no trace of skittishness of a 12’ dinghy; Illusion (that is the name given to the class) responds like a big boat. When you see her out of the water you realize why: She is a scaled-down 12-Meter below as well as above the waterline, with proportionally just a little more beam to accommodate the human body within her elegant shell.
The Illusion is a one-design keel-boat, based on a scaled version of Lionheart, the British 12 Meter Class yacht and designed by Jo Richards and Neil Graham in 1981. These performance single-handed boats offer superb racing in nearly any conditions, by sailors of all weights and ages – with tested racing performance up to Force 6! or between 22-27 knots. Sailing up to 40 knots has been known to happen.
An Easy Sailing Day
Sailing at 20 knots, easy storage.
Easy Travel
Regatta Ready
The first National Championship was held as a three day ten race regatta, in August, 1985 in Richardson’s Bay off Sausalito, CA.
Adaptive Sailing
The Illusion 12 is a one-design, single-handed keelboat featuring foot pedal steering, using a genoa with roller reefing, full trimming, including a spinnaker. Alterations to the basic designs can be made to ensure easy maneuverability, and safety for physically challenged sailors. Fro example a tiller in front of the seat rather than foot pedals to control the rudder through ropes is one example of a set up for paraplegics without use of their legs.
The Illusion Mk.2 is a one-design, duel-handed keelboat features a foredeck position using a genoa with roller reefing, full trimming, including a spinnaker, and a helmsman position including main sail trimming. No alterations to the basic designs need to be made to ensure easy maneuverability, and safety for physically challenged sailors. The boat can be sailed from the helmsman position minus the spinnaker allowing for an observer in the foredeck position.

Experience the thrill of America’s Cup Match Racing
Take an active part in supporting Long Island Sound’s historical connection to the America’s Cup
I2m Yacht Development Foundation [I2mYDF] was conceived in Greenwich, Connecticut in 2006 on the Western end of Long Island Sound which has had such a significant historical contribution to the America’s Cup and the maritime history of the United States. As we celebrate 10 years of operation and prepare to enter our second decade –we remain true to our Charitable Mission with exciting plans to “acquire, restore, and preserve historic America’s Cup Class l2m yachts and their match racing heritage.”
The foundation began with the acquisition, restoration and preservation of our first America’s Cup Class I2m yacht America II / US42 (2007) whose syndicate campaigned in the 1987 America’s Cup in Perth, Australia. In (2010) we restored and preserved Lionheart /K18 which challenged for Great Britain in the 1980 America’s Cup in Newport, RI and in (2014) we then restored and preserved Freedom / US30 – the last winner of the 1980 America’s Cup in Newport. Only with your continued help and support can we actively continue our foundations mission to secure and restore other historic America’s Cup Class yachts and to educate and preserve their match racing heritage for all enthuasists to enjoy.

Sir Philip Green’s super-yacht quarantined in Monaco over coronavirus outbreak
The $150 million and 90-meter-long super-yacht Lionheart has been docked at Monaco’s Port Hercule for over a week. Two crew members tested positive for coronavirus.
The impressive luxury vessel belongs to Sir Philip Green, British billionaire and owner of Topshop, and his wife Lady Tina Green, who is a Monaco resident. The Lionheart is the biggest yacht ever built by historic Italian yacht-maker Benetti and was bought by Sir Philip Green for an estimated 150 million dollars. The yacht has space for 16 crew members and can welcome up to 12 people.
At the time, the purchase of this yacht raised public concern in the United Kingdom. The supe-yacht was bought by Green one year after the British tycoon sold BHS clothing stores to a little-known investor for £1.
Philip Green’s retail business has been hard-hit by the pandemic and in April it was announced that he had taken government money to pay for staff during the Coronavirus lockdown. Over the last 4 years, his wealth has drastically diminished. Forbes estimates that from $5,9 billion in 2016, Philip and Tina Green are now worth a “mere” $2,2 billion.

“After maintenance in Italy, the boat returned to Monaco. We were meant to go on a cruise with my family. It was my responsibility to have the whole crew tested before leaving. We then discovered two cases — one asymptomatic and the other with a sore throat. The two have been confined to the cabin ever since,” Lady Tina Green told the local newspaper Monaco Mati n . She added that everyone was well.
According to Monaco Matin , 14 boats have now been asked to quarantine by Monaco’s government since the start of the pandemic . Their status is indicated by a yellow flag hoisted on the mast. The Lionheart question should be solved quickly enough. According to local media, all of the new tests conducted on the yacht’s crew at the beginning of the week came back negative.
