Par-A-Dice: A Vegas-style experience on a true riverboat

EAST PEORIA — Those looking for something this summer and who don’t want to go far might look at the Par-A-Dice Hotel and Casino as a good spot for a “stay-cation.”

And while there are lots of places in the Peoria area to play video poker or slots, there’s only one casino and if that’s your thing, then the big boat docked in East Peoria is the place to be, as it’s all about the experience.

“Par-A-Dice is the only place in central Illinois where you can play popular Las Vegas-style casino games like blackjack, craps, roulette or live poker, and we also have many of the latest and most popular slot machine titles among our selection of 1,000 slot machines,” said David Strow, a spokesman for Boyd Gaming, the Las Vegas-based company that owns the Par-A-Dice. “It’s a Las Vegas-style experience that doesn’t require a 2,000-mile flight.”

The 26,000 square-foot casino offers club memberships that enroll people in the chance to win as much as $5,000 and other prizes.

For those who want to take a trip to a unique place, consider this from Strow.

“The Para-A-Dice is the last true riverboat casino still in operation in the United States, and still cruises the Illinois River once per year,” he said.

The adjacent 202-room hotel has several upscale rooms. There’s Boyd’s Steakhouse, which has a single-malt scotch menu. There’s also the Rocks bar and restaurant, which offers free, live entertainment four nights a week. Weekends feature regional and local music acts while Sunday nights are for trivia hounds. Thursday nights offer live karaoke.

Strow said June’s calendar offers Brian Dennison’s country rock, John Westley, a piano bar type of a player; country singer Cadillac Jack and DJ Diamond Dan.

And with a large attached meeting space within the hotel, family reunions, weddings or small conventions are convenient. And that’s what makes the entertainment complex such a good asset, says Louisville Slugger complex director Dan Cunningham

To him, the casino is just one piece of the puzzle of the overall package used to sell the area.

“We are a big city in a small town. It’s everything you can do in Chicago or St. Louis, you can do here on a smaller scale and more economical,” he said.

It helps with other things like the Louisville Slugger complex as it’s affordable and offers good views of the riverfront. But the location of the Par-A-Dice is close to many other attractions, such as Peoria Civic Center, Dozer Park, the Peoria Riverfront Museum and others, he said. So there are options for people with families if they want to base out of the casino’s hotel.

But the Par-A-Dice also offers adults a good way to take a weekend away from the kids.

“It’s a good way for “mom and dad to get out and have a little fun within a reasonable budget,” Strow said.
