Affinity Group Report: Booming Asia-Pacific Superyacht Market

asia pacific yachting

The Asia Pacific superyacht market broke record yacht sales in 2021, with unprecedented performance stemming from an overall increase in yacht ownership and yacht chartering across the region. Eliza Rayner Group Strategy Analyst Affinity Group, reviews the current market and highlights the key trends that are painting a new era for the Asia Pacific superyacht sector.

The Asia Pacific region offers one of the best coastlines in the world, stretching over 135,000 kilometres. Regarded as a yachting paradise, Asia houses thousands of islands and tourist spots that boast modern cities with authentic culture, luxury resorts with white sandy beaches and luscious tropical habitats to explore. The Pacific Ocean is ideal for sailing and its rich in marine life offers exceptional for diving and snorkelling along the coral reefs.

As the recognised yachting hub of Asia, Hong Kong has been the most active country in the superyacht sector many years, with its maritime infrastructure and competitive fiscal regime attracting many leading global yacht brokers to set up regional offices. However, more recently there has been a surge of growth in the yachting sector across the Asia-Pacific, which has led to a development in shipyards, new builds, manufacturing partnerships and sales offices across the region.

Yacht brokers have begun targeting less developed countries in South East Asia, including Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. It seems this strategy is proving successful, as yacht brokers in Asia have reported record sales in the last year. An example is one of Asia’s largest yacht brokers, Boat Lagoon Yachting, which holds offices in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Maldives.

Another shift in the Asia Pacific superyacht market landscape that is showing promise is the developing yachting sector in China. Clouded with stringent regulation for many years, China deterred any attraction of foreign investment or supported development in its maritime infrastructure. Whilst its yachting sector is in its early life cycle, the country recently made many positive advancements, which has contributed to the yachting ‘boom’ in the Asia-Pacific.

In contrast to China, Hong Kong holds a rich maritime history and is excluded from heavy tax on luxury goods, which has been the main factor stunting China’s growth in the sector. Hong Kong proposes an attractive fiscal regime for yacht importation and VAT registration, which has strengthened its position in the sector.

In December 2016, the Hong Kong Marine Department relaxed the rules for visiting yachts and their crew, which boosted yachting in the country. Many leading global yacht brokers expanded to Hong Kong years ago to take advantage of the Asia-Pacific market, including Simpson Marine in 1984, which has since expanded its presence across Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. Prestigious yacht brokers such as Azimut yachts, Camper and Nicholsons, Benetti and Burgess Yachts set up an office in Hong Kong, which have been very active in the market. It has been noted that there have been record sales across the board for yacht brokers in Hong Kong, which includes Azimut and Simpson Marine.

After the U.S, China has the second highest concentration of billionaires globally, as the markets target audience; this poses huge potential and a promising outlook for the regions superyacht sector. Industry statistics state the Asia Pacific yacht market is witnessing strong growth and by 2026, Global Industry Analysts have predicted China’s yacht market to be worth $1.2 billion.

A post-pandemic trend demonstrated an increase in yachting in the region, due to more locals choosing the isolated, luxury travel option, which led them to discover more of the beautiful landscape on their doorstep. As a result, there has been a spike in Chinese yacht ownership and even over the last decade; the interest in the local yachting scene has been gradually rising with Chinese sailing clubs popping up across the region, local regatta races and international sporting events attracting global attention. Shaping this trend is the consistent improvement of living standards, which has resulted in consumers purchasing more luxury goods, such as yachts.

The rise in yacht ownership has slowly increased China’s global yacht market share; to put this in perspective, according to the China Transport Association’s Cruise Yacht Branch, the total number of yachts in China will increase from 38,100 to 163,510 between 2020 and 2025. This clearly demonstrates the changing landscape in recent years, and a key factor driving this is China supporting new development in the sector, with the aim to boost the country’s consumption and attract tourism.

Examples include the construction of local shipyards producing new builds. There have also been amendments to the regulation in place including loosening the country’s yacht registration standards, the yacht ownership criteria, the entry/exit requirements and easing the requirements for traveling between provinces. They have also introduced non-resident yacht registration and reduced yacht importation tax by a further 5% to encourage new business to the sector.

In doing this, it has widened access to the superyacht market in China and encouraged yachting for both pleasure and commercial use. Yacht chartering has become more popular, which boosts tourism and allows consumers to explore the great destinations on offer. Industry research states that domestic chartering across countries in Asia is increasingly popular; Simpson Marine noted there has been unprecedented growth in this area, especially in Hong Kong and Thailand.

Many leading global yacht brands have invested into Asia by forming manufacturing partnerships, for example leading Asian superyacht broker, Simpson Marine and the prestigious Italian shipyard, Sanlorenzo. World-renowned catamaran manufactures, Lagoon and Aquila, have been very successful in the Asian market, with yacht sales spanning across China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar.

Another is Ferretti Group, which set up 14 regional distributors and sold $70 million worth of yacht sales in Asia Pacific in 2020. They also demonstrated its commitment to developing the regions maritime infrastructure by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Sanya Central Business District.

As the recognised yachting hub of China, Sanya is part of the Hainan Province, which is set to become a trade free zone by 2025. The construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port will exclude import tariffs on yachts imported into the island for transportation and tourism, value added tax and consumption tax for foreign exporters. The number of registered yachts in Sanya has increased from 10 to 500 in the last decade, and in last year, apart from the surge in yacht registrations, the Hainan province accommodated 1.13 million tourists, which is only predicted to increase due to the potential the zone promises for the developing yachting sector.

It is obvious that the Asia Pacific superyacht sector is developing rapidly, whilst advancements in regulation in China provide new potential for the region, such as the Hainan FTZ, there are still barriers in the maritime infrastructure in place, including the less developed neighbouring countries. However, as the market trends suggest, yachting has become increasing popular in recent years , the shift in behaviour has created a new market for the Asian superyacht sector and this will only result in the sector maturing to capitalise on this growth. With more development in shipyards, suppliers and well-equipped marinas, plus the rising number of yacht sales across the region, the outlook only looks positive for the future Asia Pacific yacht sector, and the booming economic growth it will provide for the many countries it will bring with it.

Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association outline plans for 2022

We speak to apsa about exciting developments and pressing issues in an untapped region of the market….

Image for article Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association outline plans for 2022

There is arguably no body of water with a higher degree of untapped potential for yachting than the Asia-Pacific. According to the Hurun Global Rich List, there are over 1,000 billionaires in China alone. The physical landscape is also just as surprising, Japan has roughly 50 percent more coastline than the US, and if one were to stretch out the entire Asian coastline, it would be three times longer than the equator. Considering these statistics, it’s no surprise that the Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association is doing a hard push to promote yachting in the region.

Nigel Beatty, Founding member of APSA, outlined some of the plans he had for events this year, although admitted that the COVID-19 situation has brought about a certain degree of uncertainty, “It’s still up in the air whether we can do any sort of physical event effectively. However, online conferences, seminars and webinars and things like that I think work really well. The great thing about doing a webinar we found is that you can do an hour online and people from all over the world can join, and it's not really taken up too much of their time. You can find out a lot of information in an hour and have questions and then everyone can go about their business and then a week or two weeks later, you do another one. So, we're going to try and expand on that this year.”

asia pacific yachting

APSA is aiming to target specific sectors of the market in order to not only educate the rest of the market, but to drive the discourse into a direction that will eventually enact tangible change. With Asia being such an enormous region with a huge variety of governing bodies and legal standpoints, Beatty is keen to make sure different locations are receiving the right support for either their technical or cruising potential.

Beatty highlighted, “We're going to concentrate on brokerage in the region. We're going to maybe do a talk on charter regulations in the region. And obviously we're also going to do snapshots of various cruising areas made meeting micro snapshots. Indonesia is a massive area. So maybe one specific area is Raja Ampat, and we could do a really nice cruising snapshot of that over twenty slides including what you can do there on the shore and the formalities to get in and out.”

asia pacific yachting

As can be seen on the migration graph provided by The Superyacht Agency , Raja Ampat is already a particularly popular cruising. The Archipelago comprises of 1,500 islands which feature particularly good diving spots due to the abundance of marine life and coral reefs. According to a report developed by The Nature Conservancy and Conservation International, around 75 per cent of the world's species live in the region.

Christophe Ceard, Vice president of APSA also weighed in on his thoughts for the future of the region as the world hopefully becomes more distanced from the COVID-19 pandemic. “Logically, Asia really locked themselves in because of the pandemic. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think that the charter businesses really enjoyed that period of time and I imagine that's had a big impact on superyachting in Asia. But at the same time, I can see that Asia is really picking up and really helping to support the industry. And every day you have more and more Asian buyers.” Shipyards in Northern Europe have suggested that recently there has been growing interest stemming from Asia to build large yachts in the 100m plus category.

asia pacific yachting

The data garnered from The Superyacht Agency is particularly interesting because it reveals just how big the yachts are that are travelling into South East Asia. Almost half of all yacht entries are over 50 metres and 44 per cent have over 500 GT. What's more is that only 14 per cent of the yachts cruising South East Asia have been built in either China, Australia, or New Zealand. The region appears to be particularly popular with owners who have had their superyachts built in either Italy or the Netherlands as they make up 42 per cent of the fleet cruising that area.

There are of course some limitations to chartering in the Asia-Pacific due to the different chartering laws, Beatty explained that, “The fact is that when all the countries start being able to charter, then you can have everything linked all over Australia and all over Asia for chartering, so the yachts can move from country to country and charter in the whole region. So once more and more countries do bring it in, then it becomes more and more feasible. By the way, in some of these countries you can charter, but you have to join the yacht from a different country. So, if we had a yacht that wanted to charter in Japan, the clients would have to come into maybe Taipei, in Taiwan, or Pusan, Korea and then run into Japan from there; and then they could carry on the charter. Hopefully if more countries can change their charter laws then it will create a snowball effect as countries see what other countries are doing.”

asia pacific yachting

With so many exciting developments already in place and ready to go, industry stakeholders will be eagerly anticipating how the surge of interest and migration in the Asia-Pacific will pan out. While the actual infrastructure for accommodating and servicing superyachts in the region remains intact, the focus now will be to get governing bodies to sign across the dotted line. The wider market as well as the potential clients in Asia are already relatively well educated, which is credited by the fact that so many Asians are going to Europe to have their superyachts built. APSA now have the unenvious challenge of educating politicians and government officials in their bid to tackle inhibitive bureaucracy in Asia.

The potential is huge and growing. Facilities are not so great and few and far between. My focus is Myanmar one of the most popular destinations for chartering, has no facilitates for yachts of any size.

Presently you're likely to know that Myanmar is in the middle of a military coup. The southern Mergui Archipelago is little affected by the violence, but the logistics make it a non-destination in the near future. But this could/will change overnight so stay tuned to local businesses like https://asia-pacific-superyachts.com/. If there is interest I have a locally produced pilot book of The Southern Mergui Archipelago. [email protected]

Inaugural Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit 2024: Dates and Location Revealed

We are thrilled to announce the details for the first edition of the Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit 2024, marking a significant step towards the development of the Asian superyacht market and the aspiration to draw more yachts to the region.

Taking place on the 5th and 6th of June 2024, the inaugural summit will be hosted in the vibrant city of Hong Kong, showcasing its potential as a prime destination for superyacht enthusiasts. The Renaissance Harbour View Hotel Hong Kong has been chosen as the venue for this two-day event, where key decision-makers from diverse Asian regions and global professionals from the superyacht industry will engage in crucial discussions.

The primary focus of the Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit will be on fostering the growth of Asia as a prominent superyacht cruising destination and exploring strategies to attract Asian clients to engage in the construction, purchase, and charter of yachts.

“In recent years, there has been a waning interest from the superyacht industry in the Asian market,” notes Merijn de Waard, Founder & Director. “With the global market experiencing a slowdown, the superyacht industry must refocus its attention, and there is still a tremendous opportunity in Asia, home to over 950 billionaires according to Forbes.”

This summit aligns with our successful organization of a similar event in the Middle East, the Gulf Superyacht Summit. Together, these events aim to enhance the visibility of yachts heading eastwards.

This year’s event is sponsored by Damen Yachting as the Event Partner, YachtEye as the Gold Sponsor, and Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association (APSA) as the Supporting Partner.

Nigel Beatty, Chairman of APSA and head of Yachtzoo in Japan and Asia, comments, “APSA is very pleased to hear about the Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit, which will help promote the region as a destination for superyachts and contribute to further market growth. We at APSA will support the event and look forward to working closely with the organizing team to ensure the success of this event.”

This summit offers an excellent opportunity to participate in discussions and make a difference in the uncharted but exciting market of the Asia-Pacific region. Expand your network by engaging with influential individuals within the region.

If you are interested in sponsoring this event, registrations are now open.

The Booming Asia Pacific Superyacht Market

The Asia Pacific superyacht market broke record yacht sales in the last year, this unprecedented performance has stemmed from an overall increase in yacht ownership and yacht chartering across the region. In this article, we analyse the current market and highlight the key trends that are painting a new era for the Asia Pacific superyacht sector.

The Asia Pacific Market

The Asia Pacific region offers one of the best coastlines in the world, stretching over 135,000 kilometres. Regarded as a yachting paradise, Asia houses thousands of islands in the Pacific Ocean, which are known tourist spots that boast modern cities with authentic culture, luxury beach resorts with white sandy beaches and luscious tropical habitats to explore. The Pacific Ocean is ideal for sailing and its rich marine life offers exceptional diving and snorkeling along the coral reefs.

As the recognised yachting hub of Asia, Hong Kong has been the most active country in the superyacht sector many years, with its maritime infrastructure and competitive fiscal regime attracting many leading global yacht brokers to set up regional offices. However, more recently there has been a surge of growth in the yachting sector across the Asia Pacific, which has led to a development in shipyards, new builds, manufacturing partnerships and sales offices across the region.

Yacht brokers have begun targeting less developed countries in South East Asia, including Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. It seems this strategy is proving successful, as yacht brokers in Asia have reported record sales in the last year. An example is one of Asia’s largest yacht brokers, Boat Lagoon Yachting, which holds offices in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Maldives.

asia pacific yachting

Many leading global yacht brokers expanded to Hong Kong years ago to take advantage of the Asia Pacific market, including Simpson Marine in 1984, which has since expanded its presence across Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Shaping this trend is the consistent improvement of living standards, which has resulted in consumers purchasing more luxury goods, such as yachts.

asia pacific yachting

Industry research states that domestic chartering across countries in Asia is increasingly popular; Simpson Marine noted there has been unprecedented growth in this area, especially in Hong Kong and Thailand.

asia pacific yachting

Asia Pacific Superyachts is returning to Monaco Yacht Show

asia pacific yachting

Increasing demand has led to key expansion in Southeast Asia, bringing about the addition of Seychelles to the APS Network, whose management is excited to share key news in Monaco.

Asia Pacific Superyachts (APS) is returning to yachting’s flagship event, the 32rd international meeting of the superyacht sector’s Monaco Yacht Show to be held September 27th to 30th, 2023, bringing a wide representation of dream destination cruising in the Asia Pacific region.

“Meet us at the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show! A must-attend for private owners and new clients seeking a unique immersive experience in the yachting world” , enthused Gordon Fernandes , co-founders of APS, adding, “Recurring themes from the last Monaco show were that yachts are getting bigger, and owners are getting more adventurous in where they want to cruise. Talking to owners, we found many are bored with the normal ‘milk run’ and want to use their floating home to cruise into more exotic destinations, with some looking to do a world cruise.”

“South, South East and Eastern Asia regions are gaining in interest and importance to the global superyacht community, now considered to be one of the world’s three main cruising regions. It is important to us have our knowledgeable teams in place to meet face-to-face and provide answers directly about cruising destinations and new regulations and destinations” , said APS co-founder Captain Charlie Dwyer : “We are proud of our reputation in offering streamlined arrival and departure modes, representing an extension of the close cooperation between APS agents and local government and marine authorities” . The network of APS owner-agents will once again have the latest updates of cruising Asia Pacific for superyacht owners, captains, charter specialists, managers and other industry professionals.

Increasing demand has led to key expansion in Southeast Asia, bringing about the addition of Seychelles to the APS Network, whose management is excited to share key news in Monaco: “Superyacht agencies have been working closely with government officials over the past decade to bring about important and necessary changes for luxury vessels to visit Asia Pacific, supporting visiting international vessels with changing regulations for easier entry and longer stays” , reports APS Seychelles Manager Director, Christophe Houareau .

“When arriving in the Seychelles, Captains can be assured of a seamless entry to Eden Island Marina, a dedicated superyacht facility, with the typical arrival process itself taking as little as half an hour for a vessel to be cleared in with no visas required to enter the Seychelles (provided all documents are in order)” , explains APS Seychelles GM, Peter Alvis .

APS Maldives Director, Mohamed Hameed adds, “We very much look forward to welcoming visitors to the APS Stand and all of our Asia Pacific teams will bring timely information and new developments of superyacht dream destinations to the Monaco Yacht Show.”

Visiting Yachts

Testimonial, welcome to phuket, thailand.

asia pacific yachting

Phuket is the largest and most developed island in Thailand. Conveniently located in the Andaman Sea this tropical paradise has fast become a major tourist destination and the Superyacht Hub for Asia. Crystal clear waters and golden sandy beaches have been attracting visitors to Phuket for over 40 years. Just a short cruise away are the outer islands which offer peace and tranquillity which is a world away from the hustle and bustle of Phuket.

The development of the International Airport (which can cater for any private jet and most commercial aircraft sizes including 747’s), high-end villas, beach clubs and hotel facilities has meant that Phuket is now a playground for the rich and famous.

Scuba diving is another major attraction for visiting superyachts to Phuket and Whale Sharks are regularly spotted in the high season when there is plenty of plankton for them to feed on. The area is home to two types of island, granite islands are low level and tend to be forested e.g. the Similan Islands and then there are the limestone islands these islands tend to rise vertically from the sea and produce dramatic scenery e.g. Phi Phi, these islands sometimes have holes in the middle these are called hongs (room in Thai) and tourists tend to swim/kayak into the middle of these stunning islands.

Asia Pacific Superyachts currently has 3 offices on this paradise tropical island these are strategically located so that clients are offered a bespoke tailor-made service which can be offered 24 hours day 7 days a week. The Phuket office has 12 full-time staff and combined superyacht service experience of over 80 years, staff are used to dealing with high-end client requests and the office is headed by the hands-on Thai owner Jojo who has well-established connections with the Phuket customs, harbor and immigration authorities, there is a saying if Jojo can’t do it then nobody can.

In Phuket, you can find marinas which have 24-hour deep water access and can accommodate superyachts of up to 150M’s in length. Yachts are now basing themselves in Phuket for the season and then cruising to the Andaman Islands in India, the stunning uninhabited islands of the Mergui Archipelago in Myanmar (Burma) and of course to the outer (quiet) islands near to Phuket.

For yachts needing to carry out maintenance work, there is a haul out facility for ships up to 800GRT. Competent locally based tradespeople offer engineering, painting, stainless and teak work. Their prices are very competitive and work can be carried out to international standards within reasonable timeframes.

Thank you all so much for your help and assistance during our time in Phuket. You are all amazing, so helpful and attentive, nothing is ever a problem or too difficult to organise. It was a pleasure working with you all. From even before we arrived you were making sure things were sorted out and even with the difficulties of COVID you made everything run smoothly. When TM comes back to Thailand I really look forward to working with you again.

M/Y Lionheart

We used Gordon and Jojo to look after Lionheart during our visit to Thailand in early 2019. Without a doubt, the APS team are one of the most conscientious and hardworking yacht agents I’ve come across – they are quick, efficient and simply manage to get the job done and done well.

Captain Thomas Jones

asia pacific yachting

Gordon and his team provided excellent and organised service. We relied upon them for everything from assistance with provisioning and customs and immigration clearances, to general concierge work including booking a photographer. Their local knowledge and contacts smoothed the way for successful and enjoyable trips. Gordon was always on hand to assist in any way he could.

Captain Daniel Hughes

M/Y Archimedes

When we headed for Thailand and Myanmar, we used Gordon Fernandes of Asia Pacific Superyachts. We found Gordon to be equally as competent. His task was made immeasurably difficult because we had whimsical guests aboard virtually all the time. Gordon continuously managed to accomplish the impossible for us, not just in guest services but in the myriad needs always required in operations of this scale. Dockage, clearances, fuel, provisions, transportation, tours, guides, permits, aviation support, etc, were handled with efficiency and apparent ease. Gordon proved to be indispensable over and over again, particularly with our ever changing Myanmar cruise.

Captain Chris Walsh

asia pacific yachting

We had the pleasure of working with Asia Pacific Superyachts while based in Phuket and highly recommend to anyone going to Thailand to get in touch with Gordon and his team. Simply put, their assistance greatly helped and enhanced every aspect of our time in Thailand – from paperwork and service work to the whims of the guests and needs of the crew. Too many examples come to mind to list, so suffice it to say that no matter how small or big the task APS is well equipped to help clear up all of your headaches as well as help prevent many more. What’s more, is that this incredible service is brought to you by a group of incredibly pleasant people that are a delight to work with. Likewise, if you are coming/going to/from Thailand via Malaysia and Singapore I can highly recommend using APS in those locations as well.

Captain Jonathon Allen

For many centuries Phuket was an important stop for trading ships on the route between India and China. During the Sukothai Period, the time of the first Thai Kingdom, Phuket was associated with other cities in South Thailand famous for their vast tin reserves. During the following Ayuthaya Period of the 16th century the Thais governed the island’s northern and central regions while the southern and western parts were given over to the tin trade, a concession in the hands of foreigners.

The landscape is one of forested hills, coconut groves, rubber plantations and a coastline dotted with numerous spectacular beaches with surrounding waters containing varied marine life. The island and the surrounding 32 smaller islands form Phuket Province for a total area of 570 square kilometres. On the North Phuket is connected to the mainland by two bridges running side-by-side, the older Sarasin Bridge and the newer Thepkrasattri Bridge.

From Yacht Haven to Ko Hong (16NM’s), offering kayaking, caves and very beautiful scenery. If guests wish they can take the tender (shallow water) and go to the sea gypsy village near ‘James Bond’ Island. We do not recommend guests stop at James Bond Island as it is highly visited by tourists. Anchor at Ko Hong overnight.

Yacht departs Ko Hong and heads south for Ko Kai Nok (18NM’s) for beach time, snorkeling and swimming. Mid-morning the yacht departs Ko Kai Nok and heads to the East side of Ko Yao Yai and Ko Yao Noi (19NM’s) for a very nice sail through the Ko Pak Bia group of islands.

Again, large limestone islands are found here. It is less touristy and there are a couple of fantastic beaches in this area, with the best one at Ko Hong. There is another Ko Hong on this side and guests can go in the tender to the center of Ko Hong. Anchor overnight.

phuket3

Boat anchors at Raleigh beach. Guests spend the day here and can select to go rock climbing, swimming or just chill out under the limestone cliffs.

There is also a small cave which houses Chinese Viking paintings and is the place locals collect birds’ nests, used to make the famous ‘Chinese Birds Nest Soup’.

Late evening/overnight depart to Phuket – Surin Beach. (60NM’s)

Spend the day at the world famous Amanpuri hotel, reported to be among the top ten of hotels around the world. Guests can relax with pampering, on the beach or do some of the many activities on the island like elephant riding, go-karting, monkey and snake shows and a visit to Phuket’s famed “Fantasea’ (stage show).

phuket5

Anchor overnight – please note that there can be a large swell rolling onto this beach so anchoring and tender runs will be weather dependent.

Surin Beach to Similan Islands (51Nm’s) – The Similan Islands lie northwest of Phuket in the Andaman Sea. In 1982 this 128 square kilometer area was declared a marine national park. In recent years this group of nine small islands (Similan is derived from the Malay sembilan and means nine) has become one of the leading attractions for visitors to Southern Thailand.

8 migrants apparently from Asia die in apparent boat accident off Mexico’s southern Pacific coast

  • Copy Link copied

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The bodies of eight migrants, apparently from Asia, were found after a boat accident off Mexico’s southern Pacific coast, authorities said Friday.

Prosecutors in the southern state of Oaxaca said one survivor, an Asian man, was located. Based on preliminary investigations, the dead appeared to have been from Asia, they said.

The bodies were found near a beach in the town of Playa Vicente, which is about 250 miles (400 kilometers) east of Mexico’s border with Guatemala. The causes of the boat accident were under investigation.

The area is a key route for migrants seeking to cross Mexico to reach the U.S. border. Most migrants travel by land, but some pay to make the journey by sea seeking to avoid immigration checkpoints inside Mexico.

Federal Government Commits 17 Million to Fight Tuberculosis in Asia-Pacific

Australia’s federal government has announced it will invest $17 million towards helping curb the spread of tuberculosis in Asia and the Pacific—a disease estimated to kill one person globally every 20 seconds.

The Global Alliance for Tuberculosis (TB) is a conglomerate of national health agencies and technology funds, which include the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and is tasked with reversing deaths caused by the bacterial infection that most often affects the lungs.

Cover Up of Tuberculosis Outbreak Alleged at Cape Cod Migrant Encampment

Health Groups Call for More Funding

“The progress made in Asia and the Pacific in just one year proves that dedicated resources and funding, including from Australia, is paying off. The investments and efforts made today will dictate whether TB can end by 2030, meeting this goal is within reach, and the governments of today, including Australia, can be part of this history-making feat,” Ms. Chorley said.

The federal announcement was timed to coincide with World Tuberculosis Day which is held every year on March 24.

On the same date in 1882, Dr. Robert Koch announced the discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria that causes TB. Cities around the world are now invited via the hashtag #LightupforTB to illuminate a local landmark in red to raise awareness.

Results International said a return of $40 for every dollar invested in TB drug development will be forthcoming by 2050.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong said on March 24 that along with curbing infection rates, the new funding showed the government’s commitment to improving lives in impoverished countries.

“Improving the health and well-being of communities in Southeast Asia and the Pacific is central to supporting a peaceful, stable and prosperous region,” Ms Wong said.
