Boat Review: Ocean 52 Super Sport

The season had just started in earnest in Palm Beach. Homeowners suddenly stored the summer shutters, gardeners freshened up all the landscaping, and the hustle and bustle of Worth Avenue’s shops decried declining stock prices. Most of the slips at the Sailfish Club were filled with gleaming hulls, and the first serious cold front hit town with brisk northeast winds guaranteed to start the denizens snapping in Sailfish Alley. We, too, hit the town to run Ocean’s newest 52-foot Super Sport, compliments of John Staluppi’s rapidly growing South Florida Yachts.

Performance According to Ocean’s VP of sales, Doug Finney, the majority of the earliest Ocean 52 SS buyers have opted for the standard power package – CAT 3406E diesels of 800 horses each. And our fuel flow figures below reflect those engines. However, the boat we got to run offshore for the real test boasted twin 10-cylinder MAN diesels rated at 1,050 horses each.

With one engine in neutral at idle speed (the only way to produce an acceptable harbor wake), the boat moved along at 6 knots. Outside Lake Worth Inlet we ran at 25 knots dead into the 4-foot seas in perfect comfort, though there was some delay before the engines spooled up – 22 seconds to be exact. Turning off with the seas 10 degrees off the bow showed the 52 had no problem running at 29 knots while staying smooth and dry. Naval architect David Martin, who draws all of Ocean’s hulls, does some masterful blending of a fast running surface combined with exceptionally roomy interiors.

The Ocean 52 running down-sea gives the sensation of riding a fast horse. As you come up on the back of the next wave, there’s just the slightest hesitation, as when a horse is in full gallop and has all its hooves off the ground. Then a fraction after it hits the wave it accelerates, just as when a horse touches the ground again. It’s a subtle but exhilarating sensation. It banks gently into turns and scribes a fairly large arc at cruising speed. But don’t let this stately demeanor fool you. Hook up to a fish, and it can back and spin with the best of them.

Cruising with the MAN engines, I found comfort in running 1,700 rpm at 27 knots. Top speed was 38.8 knots at 2,335 rpm. See the accompanying fuel flow chart for speeds with the CATs.

Cockpit Ocean provides most everything in the cockpit you’d expect. A deep freeze just to port of the engine hatch has a lift-out tray on top while just outboard of that is the sink and rigging station with tackle drawers beneath. Hidden in a cabinet to starboard is a set of cockpit controls. Perhaps the only thing I’d change on this boat can be found in the under-gunwale storage compartments. There really aren’t any. When you open the hatch on each side, you find the fiberglass liner comes out to within an inch or so of the hatch, precluding storing anything other than wafer-thin mints inside. And those always fare better when kept in the bait freezer. The starboard-side fish box boasted an optional cold plate to turn salt water into briny slush – the best possible way to care for fresh fish – and you’ll find a second optional, lift-out baitwell in the cockpit sole on centerline as well as another standard one in the transom.

Fishability The wide-open cockpit proved as easy to fish as any, with fish boxes, baitwells and rigging station logically placed. Of course, what every fishing captain does when he takes delivery of an Ocean is remove the life ring on the rail behind the bridge helm seat. It blocks what is otherwise an exceptionally good view of the cockpit, fighting chair and transom. Ocean leaves toe space under the gunwale cabinetry so you can more easily keep your center of gravity inboard when gaffing or releasing fish. But I’d still like to see that cabinet space opened up for gaff and mop storage.

Flybridge Ocean provides comfort commensurate with the best four-star hotels. For example, precious few production builders make optional air conditioning available on the flybridge. And whether at the dock or running to the fishing grounds, the flybridge has been designed for entertaining as well as navigating. A large, molded-in table on centerline along the forward brow breaks up the almost 360 degrees of seating in front of the helm console. Another straight settee along the portside ends with an optional built-in drink refrigerator on the aft end.

Ocean Yachts enjoys a reputation for consistently producing some of the best and most creative interiors of any production boat builder. All one need do to sell an Ocean Yacht is to take the family down below. Mission accomplished. In the case of this 52 SS, the living quarters consist of four separate levels. Enter the salon on one level, where the bulk of the seating consists of an L-shaped settee portside. To starboard, a single swivel chair lets the captain hold court. Step up to the galley with its beautiful teak joinerwork and satin-finished cabinets that give a warm, lustrous ambience. Waist-high, Corian-topped counters house cabinets and a refrigerator/freezer beneath. Opposite the galley is a dinette perfect for four super models or two people of my size. Descend the stairs for’ard, and you’ll find an over/under double cabin to port with a head and shower opposite. The forward cabin consists of a full-width cabin with a queen-sized island berth and a private head with shower in the forepeak. But if you walked aft at the bottom of the s’airwell, you’d have taken several steps farther downward and entered the full-width master stateroom. This compartment features an athwartship queen berth and its own private head with shower. If you cruise with two’couples, you’ll appreciate the buffer zone between the two main staterooms.

**Engine Room **You won’t stand upright in this engine ro’m, and there’s no room outboard of the engines. But everything you need to access from valves to dipsticks all rest within easy reach of the centerline passageway. Ocean has placed a large, diamond-plate box at the forward end of the compartment in the center alley to house all batteries. Certainly this makes battery maintenance a dream, but it also limits access to the items on the forward bulkhead.

So if you have your heart set on a top-quality sport-fishing boat but are having trouble convincing your other half to go along, just take her aboard an Ocean 52. And bring a deposit check.

Toward the end of the Palm Beach International Boat Show this spring, I found myself walking the docks, snapping pictures and shaking hands when I turned a corner and came face to face with an outboard-powered behemoth. It was Gulfstream Yachts’ 52-foot center console, painted dark gray, with four 627 hp Seven Marine motors strapped to the transom.

I ogled the boat for a while and moved on, bumping into an old friend shortly afterward. She asked what had caught my interest at the show. I thought for a moment, and my mind wandered back to the Gulfstream, with her razor’s-edge sheer line creating an undeniable presence.

But before I could speak, my friend smiled knowingly and answered her own question: “Have you seen that Gulfstream 52 yet?”

Whom It’s For: With both ­cruising and fishing layout options, as well as a blistering top speed of 70 knots, the 52 is a serious tender for any mega-yacht owner with a flare for the dramatic.

The Gulf Crosser 52 is arguably one of the most recognizable boats on the market and has created an entirely new category by combining the benefits of a traditional center console boat with the protection of an enclosed boat. It's a serious fishing machine but with a level of comfort that makes the boat ideal for many other uses, too. The most distinguishing feature of the 52 is the air-conditioned upper salon with a solid glass enclosure surrounding the helm and passenger seating area. This climate-controlled haven offers panoramic views and allows you to operate the boat in any type of weather conditions that you might encounter during your outings on the water. Gone are the days of hesitating to enjoy a lunch or dinner cruise aboard your center console boat out of fear that it might storm on your way home. 

Gulf Crosser Yachts collaborated with renowned superyacht designers  Setzer Yacht Architects  and  Michael Peters Yacht Design  to bring this remarkable vessel to life and give it the ideal blend of style and performance. The patented Stepped "V" Ventilated Tunnel (SVVT) hull technology introduces a cushion of air under a portion of the running surface to increase speed and fuel efficiency while also maintaining control and stability. The little details such as the overhanging edges of the salon superstructure with courtesy lighting below, the hidden speakers, or the clean lines where everything clearly has its place gives the boat a feel you would normally only expect to find on a much larger yacht.

We have always found that passengers prefer to spend the majority of their time on the main deck, especially while underway, so a key element of the 52's design was to place as much of the overall square footage as possible on that deck level. The massive cockpit, huge sunpad, and forward seating area offer ample open-air space when the weather is nice while the climate-controlled upper salon provides a welcome retreat when you want to escape the elements. The cockpit includes a refrigerator, freezer, grill, sink, and ice maker which, combined with the included diesel generator, enables the boat to be completely self-sufficient so that you can easily spend a few nights aboard at a remote island. The salon and helm area features a large seating area with a table where passengers can sit and enjoy the scenery without impeding the captain’s ability to use either of the two side doors to move about the boat freely. While the glass enclosure provides outstanding protection from heat, cold or rain, customers tell us that the thing they appreciate the most is the fact that there is no wind fatigue even after running at high speed for long periods of time.

The lower cabin of the 52 can be reached from the upper salon without ever having to venture outside so that you can remain protected from the elements for hours at a time if desired. Once below, you will find a comfortable seating area that converts to either a king size bed or two single beds, along with a restroom and a shower. There is also a partial galley with a microwave, coffee bar, and refrigerator to complement the larger outdoor galley up in the cockpit.  It’s the perfect place to make a quick sandwich or grab a cold drink when you don’t want to head outside.  Rather than including a small second stateroom in the lower cabin, the 52 takes advantage of the air-conditioned upper salon to provide a spacious additional sleeping area. The large table in that upper salon quickly and easily lowers to convert the seating area to a queen size bed. Our electronic switchable glass option provides privacy for the space with the touch of a button and also allows you to turn the entire back window into a massive movie screen.

In addition to the focus on comfort, the 52 continues our longstanding obsession with safety. The boat is built using our foam-filled construction techniques and was designed with high gunnel walls, wide passageways, and a single level deck from bow to stern to allow safe and easy access to all areas of the boat. We use three-piece construction as opposed to the less expensive two-piece construction method used by many of our competitors because the toe kick space provided by a three-piece boat is far superior for anglers and passengers alike since it doesn't direct your weight outward when leaning against the side walls of the boat. The helm was designed so that the captain can easily see over the bow even when the sunpad is occupied which is fairly unique compared to almost any other center console boat with a sunpad integrated into the front of the console. The base cushions of our sunpads are placed much lower than those of most of our competitors because we want to eliminate the possibility of passengers falling from a high spot if you happen to encounter an unexpected wave. We have also incorporated many redundant systems as an added measure of protection. And, our industry pioneering “Navigator Station” puts a third Garmin screen across the aisle from the helm so that another person can watch the FLIR or radar feed, enter a waypoint, or change the radio station without ever distracting the captain.

The Gulf Crosser 52 was designed for standalone use and also to be the ultimate multipurpose yacht tender because you can fish and dive from the boat in the morning and then ferry guests to shore later that evening while keeping them sheltered from the weather. After the yacht tender operations are done for the day, the boat can then be used to provide accommodations for extra crew. 

Finally, the Gulf Crosser 52 was designed to be highly customizable which allows us to also offer the boat in a number of additional configurations in case you need additional staterooms, want even more open space, or prefer a traditional center console arrangement. Our team works directly with you to understand how you plan to use your boat and then we build it EXACTLY the way you want.

Used Viking 52 Convertible For Sale

The Viking 52 Convertible, launched in 2014, was updated from its preceding model, that was built between 2002-2008, with a new interior design. From cockpit steps, the entrance to the spacious salon/galley/dinette area is to port. DESCRIPTION

The standard 3-stateroom, 2-head accommodations layout has changed as well—companionway is on portside between the dinette and galley. The laundry center with washer and dryer is at foot of steps, to port. The amidships master stateroom with ensuite head and shower is now on starboard side. The guest stateroom in forepeak features crossover bunks with a double lower bunk and single upper bunk. Viking offers an optional centerline queen berth arrangement. The third stateroom with over/under bunks is portside and the guest/day head is in between. Both guest staterooms have private access to the guest head with separate shower stall. All three staterooms are nicely appointed and comfortable with the meticulous craftsmanship and elegant style Viking is known for, and all three staterooms feature maple-lined storage.

The galley has a full array of appliances hidden in handle-free gleaming teak cabinets for a modern, uncluttered look. Deep drawer refrigerator and freezer units are under countertop. The 3-burner cooktop is recessed in counter with matching Corian cover. A microwave/convection oven and stainless steel undermounted sink with garbage disposal are also standard, along with easy-care Amtico flooring. As with all Viking convertible sportfish yachts, the 52 Convertible is designed to be highly fishable. The open flybridge features Viking’s exclusive center console helm station with two bucket seats in front of console and flanking lounges—portside lounge has an aft-facing jumpseat. The 52 Convertible can be customized with any of Viking’s options, such as a custom tuna tower by Palm Beach Towers, riggers, rocket launcher arrays, electric teaser reels, custom navigation, communications, and entertainment electronics packages from Atlantic Marine Electronics, and other equipment and accessories, for turnkey delivery.

The 142 sq ft cockpit with Viking’s exclusive observation mezzanine features cushioned seat sections that lift for engine room access and bait freezer compartment. Salon entry step has an insulated drink box that can be refrigerated as an option. On portside is a molded fiberglass cabinet with tackle drawers under the athwartship aluminum ladder to bridge aft deck. Bridge overhang shades the mezzanine below. Large in-sole insulated fishbox and an in-sole 40-gallon well that can be plumbed as a livewell or used for ice storage (fed from optional Eskimo ice maker in engine room), are standard. An in-sole backing plate is ready to support an optional fighting chair—the mezzanine is curved to allow more space around back of fighting chair. Standard cockpit sole is non-slip fiberglass. Teak sole and trim is optional. The gated transom door is on portside. Transom can have a built-in fishbox or livewell. Rupp rod holders are flush mounted in gunwales. Lockers under gunwales hide shore power and water connections, Glendinning Cablemaster lines, cable TV and phone connections and provide storage for accessory equipment. Viking makes it easy for owners to arrange and outfit the cockpit to their personal fishing style.

Built tough to take on challenging sea conditions, the 52 Convertible hull changes are based on “sistership” 62 EB Convertible. Viking’s build method of resin-infused hull, in a matrix of composite materials—foam and end grain balsa coring, Kevlar®, Aramid and E-glass knitted fiberglass laminates, is engineered to reduce weight while adding strength. Carbon fiber is used in the one-piece deckhouse assembly in its composite structure. Construction and materials are engineered to enhance strength to weight ratio for greater performance and efficiencies. Hull is designed with sharp forward entry to cut through head seas and a convex hull shape for greater buoyancy. Molded bottom strakes enhance lift. The modified-V hull transitions to 11.8 degrees deadrise at transom for greater speed and throttle response—as with all current Viking convertibles, as Viking strives to improve with each new build. Viking’s vertical integration and state-of-the-art production methods have led to capabilities close to that of custom boat builders, but with shorter delivery times.

The Viking 52 Convertible length overall (LOA) is 53’2” with a beam of 17’6” and draft of 4’11”. Fuel capacity is 1,202 gallons, water capacity is 186 gallons, and holding tank is 57 gallons. Gross weight with standard fuel load is 67,680 lbs.

Power Options for the 52C are twin MAN V8 1000CRM 1000 hp (Base) and twin MAN V12 1400CRM 1400 hp (Option).

Miami, FL: This 52’ Munson Sportfisher incorporates a 20 degree modified V hull and unique walk around cabin design with generous passageways around the perimeter of the vessel. The interior includes a forward stateroom, 2 bunk rooms, lower galley and head compartment. In the main salon there is a dinette to port and built in entertainment center to starboard. Corian countertops are installed throughout. The aft cockpit features fishing tackle storage drawers, bait tank, side boarding door, downriggers and flush mount rod holders. Electronics include dual Garmin 16” touchscreen displays, Fantom 18” solid state radar, Fusion Bluetooth stereo, and Intellian i4 sat TV system. Quad Yamaha 425’s provide an impressive 40 knot top speed and comfortable 30 knot cruise.

Oakland, CA: The State of California Department of Transportation uses this 52' workboat for maintaining & inspecting the 12 highway bridges in San Francisco Bay. The 25' tall hydraulically operated A-frame is designed to deploy and retrieve 3000 lb. pier fenders. Other outfitting includes dual hydraulic anchor winches, solar panels, aft work shop, welding machine, air compressor, diving equipment, and Delta T forced air engine room ventilation system.

Lovango Island, USVI: The Lovango Homeowner's Association operates the M/V Jac as an island ferry between ST Thomas USVI and their island community. Hydraulic outriggers and a loading ramp are installed at the transom. This system allows for roll on/roll off loading of Association member vehicles and wheeled construction equipment. Special strengthening was incorporated into the cargo deck to accommodate a 30,000 lb. cement mixer.

Mediterranean Sea: This Special Forces transport craft is designed to pack 7 tons at 30 knots and built to ABS Classification. Primary duties include the transport of armored personnel carriers, troops, and gear. Outfitting includes a 26" side door an 8 Kw generator, tinted wheelhouse windows, dual wheelhouse air conditioners, bow and stern anchor windlasses and removable foredeck storage lockers.
