FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Is the hull designed to be printed in vase mode.

Yes. Vase mode guarantees good layer adhesion and the best surface quality, and it reduces a lot the printing time.

What material do you recommend to print the Alioth files?

We recommend PLA+ or PLA.

PLA is stiff, has low shrinkage and is easy to print. The disadvantage is a low glass transition temperature.

Darker colours warp on direct sunlight as the temperature of the surface builds up fast. To avoid this, use bright clear colours.

Don’t leave printed parts in a car on hot summer days, as the temperature can easily rise above 50°C.

What sailwinch servos can I use?

Files include three different servo trays for:

  • Standard size (40×20 mm) sailwinch servos, like Turnigy 6114.
  • S100 sailwinch.
  • RMG and ARS808 sailwinch servos.

What other parts do I need to complete my Alioth boat?

Hull fittings kit (available in our online store).

Rudder and keel (SailingLAB carbon rudder and keel are available in our online store).

“The Nano”: First Dedicated 3D RC Class

The International Radio Sailing Association (IRSA) has released a set of international rules for a unique new class based on the emerging 3D Printing Technology.

This new and exciting style of class is focused on expanding and promoting Radio Yachting to a much wider audience.

Following is an extract from the Question and Answer section of the IRSA web site.

The new Class Rules are also on the site at Documents:  https://www.radiosailing.org/documents

What is the point of the NANO class?

The advent of 3D printing fittings and other parts for rc boats raises the possibility of a class where the hulls and other parts are largely constructed by 3D printing and, probably, by the end user. Although this may well work in the existing RG65 and FOOTY classes, those class rules permit conventional moulded carbon fibre for the hull and deck structures and this confers a large weight/stiffness advantage to boats built using ‘hi tech’ methods

A new class rule devised specifically to cater for those who want to create their own boat, primarily by printing it themselves, would seem to be a logical step for the sport.

Such a class is an ideal one in which students of all ages can test their design and build skills. Perfect for craft, design and technology projects. The possibility of designing the boat on Friday and going racing on Saturday has become a reality.

Importantly the class raises the possibility of readily available low cost boats within an open class that is ideal for those starting the sport of rc sailing. You do not have to choose a one design with no freedom to experiment.

Objectives of NANO class

  • Sailors are quite likely to be able to design and build the majority of their own boat
  • Hull and associated structural parts may only be made by 3D printing
  • No hull/boat certification process
  • No sail area measurement
  • Event measurement only
  • Draught/length ratio not so large that fin technology rules – 0.45 length maximum
  • Tightly controlled rig size and number

Provisional class rules have been launched in May 2017. It is anticipated that feedback from users may assist with refinement of the class rules, if required, to help achieve the desired objectives.

Introduction: 3D Printed RC Sailboat

3D Printed RC Sailboat

I am a grade 8 student in Corpus Christi school. I have been recently mastering the form tool in Fusion 360. I have always had a passion for sailboats, so I decided to make a small RC sailboat with this tool. Using some servos I had lying around as well as and receiver and small battery. This boat is relatively small but I printed the parts on my Ender 3 but the hull I had to have it printed by another a 3D printing company. Using the stuff I learned from this smaller project I want to integrate in to a much bigger craft.

  • 3D printer (I used an Ender 3)
  • Liquid electrical tape (Can use electrical tape as alternative)
  • Wooden dowel (.2in) (One section 5.5 in long (Boom) and the second (Mast)
  • Thin Gauge Wire
  • 1 9g servo (Modified)
  • 1 4g servo (Unmodified)
  • RC receiver (I used a Flysky FS-i6)
  • 2s micro battery, JST connector

Step 1: Designing and Printing the Hull

Designing and Printing the Hull

  • Print the Hull, Mast, boom, Boom to mast Connector, rudder.
  • Print the cabin and coat the sides with the liquid electrical tape, depending on how big the cockpit is for your boat, for me I used about 4 coats (Note: Would recommend test floating and if water gets in either add more tape or liquid electrical tape coats)
  • Using the boom and mast link them using the Boom to Mast connector. If the Boom is too loose you can either rap the end in electrical tape or glue it in place

download {{ file.name }}

Step 2: Making the Sail and Attaching the Rudder

Making the Sail and Attaching the Rudder

Making the sail is probably the hardest part of building this boat

  • Using the boom and mast linked together draw a triangle inside the two pieces.
  • Using the thin gauge wire poke a hole in the sailcloth and wrap it around the mast, repeat this process on themes about 5-7 times and then after this repeat the process along the boom about 4-5 times
  • Print the file attached below
  • After the rudder has been printed make sure that it fits in the rudder slot on the stern of the boat.
  • using a soldering iron on the small portion of material behind the rudder slot melt a small hole maybe 2mm deep.
  • After this is completed insert a piece of thin gauge wire into this hole and glue it down. Insert the other end into the hole in the rudder. After this is completed just attach a separate section of wire to the top hole in the thin section of the rudder up top and attach that end to the rudder servo

Step 3: Attaching the Electronics to the Cockpit

Attaching the Electronics to the Cockpit

  • Attaching the electronics should fairly simple. use the picture above for reference. I have marked all the places were the electronics should be placed in order for proper alignment and so everything should fit. I would recommend water proofing your electronics as the seal created by the cover is not perfect and the slot cut for the main sheet will let water in when keeling.
  • In order to get your main sheet servo to work it must be a 360 degree servo. you can either buy one or modify a regular 9g servo. I have attached a video below on how to do so

Step 4: Test Run/Float

Now you have completed the project! I would recommend test floating it in a bath tub to make sure everything balances right then you can take it out too your local pond or lake and sail away.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Does alioth design cumply with the iom class rules.

Yes. A lthough the design has not been on the market for a long time, there are already some that have been registered with measurement certificate.

I am interested in home build an Alioth yacht but I don´t have a 3D printer.

If you don´t have a 3D printer but would like to build an Alioth, 3D printed kits are available for that purpose. More details soon.

I´ m thinking of purchasing a printer, which one would you recommend for a nice finish?

Most popular low price printers are good to print PLA material if they are well calibrated and work in a suitable place away from drafts or vibrations.

Make sure the build volume is 210x210x250 mm or larger.

Typically, you need to spend some time understanding and calibrating a 3D printer.

What material do you recommend to print the Alioth files?

PLA+ is stiff, has low shrinkage and is easy to print. The disadvantage is a low glass transition temperature.

Darker colours warp on direct sunlight as the temperature of the surface builds up fast. To avoid this, use bright clear colours.

Is the hull designed to be printed in vase mode?

Yes. Vase mode guarantees good layer adhesion and the best surface quality, and it reduces a lot the printing time.

What sailwinch servos can I use?

Files include three different servo trays for:

  • Standard size (40×20 mm) sailwinch servos, like DSNA SW22HV.
  • S100 sailwinch.
  • RMG and ARS808 sailwinch servos.

Model sailboat enthusiasts have found a new level of creativity with the emergence of 3D printing. This technology has made it easier, faster, and cheaper to produce sailboat models of various types and sizes, from massive yachts to small, affordable crafts. One example of this innovation is the 3D printed footy sailboat, which has revolutionized the footy sailing class. Footy sailboats are small, simple, and affordable compared to other sailboat model classes. However, 3D printing has made these boats even more accessible and easier to build without sacrificing performance on the water. This article will explore the design, construction, and racing potential of the 3D printed footy sailboat.

Customizable Footy Sailboats Made Easy with 3D Printing

Footy sailboats are characterized by their small size, typically between 12 and 18 inches in length, and their simple, minimalistic design.

The class rules dictate that the total weight must not exceed 425 grams and that the sail area must not exceed 50 square inches.

Footy sailboats utilize radio control systems that allow the operator to maneuver the sailboat from a distance.

Footy sailboats were popularized in Australia in the 1970s as a way to make model sailing more accessible to everyone, and since then, they have become a favorite among model boat enthusiasts worldwide.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

3d printed sailboat rc

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
