The choices are endless for you to find the perfect hired boat for just a few hours as a day charter, a couple days as a time charter, or a charter for weeks on the water in order to experience the special feeling of livng on a boat. Hire a yacht for a party or event, host some networking opportunities, sail for sport without any limits, have a relaxing holiday, or have a completely private experience – the choice is yours.

Business people or successful young entrepreneurs may prefer to travel at higher speeds and therefore to charter one of many motorboats available for a fun daytrip or to experience the luxury of a mega yacht with a skipper, crew and all the extras for an unforgettable week or two at sea.

A regatta sailor might want to hire a catamaran and experience sailing with friends for the first time, working the sails and dinghy a bit like in the America’s Cup, with hard wind blowing and testing out a higher Beaufort scale. A friend of nature may want a more relaxing holiday, in which case chartering a houseboat with a partner vacation season could be the way to go. With calmer waters, this sort of holiday is also perfect for an entire family including small children. This is a popular online rental because houseboats often require no boating license for the driver. As of a few years ago, houseboat charters throughout Europe have been largely allowed without a boat license, which has made sailing holidays with children even more popular. For the sailing enthusiast who has all different types of sailing licenses, booking a sailboat on a Riviera will test your abilities and challenge you to sail your hardest. If you don’t find the right boat in our search and booking engine for immediate hire for your sailing cruise, wedding at sea, or other event on the water, you can easily book by emailing Yachtico.com or by calling the 24-hour support line. You wouldn’t believe what all we can accomplish. Just contact us with your special requests! We have experts worldwide who have enough experience to make your wishes for your holiday be realized.

Why choose Intrepid

sailing yacht holidays

Experienced skippers

Our skippers have years of experience sailing the high seas. There’s no one better to show you the ropes (literally).

See the best of your destination by land and by water.

Best of both worlds

These sailing vacations aren’t confined to the ocean blue. There’s plenty of time scheduled on land to see the sights and check out the local culture.

We make safety a priority on each of our sailing trips.

Safety first, always

Our yachts are well looked after and regularly maintained and on day one, the captain will also conduct a safety demonstration.

You don't need sailing experience to enjoy an Intrepid sailing tour.

No experience needed

If you'd like to pick up some sailing skills, your skipper can show you how. If not, just relax, kick back on deck and soak up some ocean breezes.

Sailing highlights by country

A beach with white sand and turquoise water on the Phi Phi Islands, Thailand

Explore the unforgettable islands of Thailand

From the famous landscapes of Phang Nga Bay to the pristine beaches of Koh Phi Phi (and all of the remarkable islands in between), a sailing adventure through southern  Thailand  promises to produce some of your favorite travel memories ever. Relax on golden sand, take a dip in sparkling turquoise waters and cast your eyes upon natural wonders you’ve only ever seen photos of.

Woman kneeling next to a sea lion on a beach on Isla Isabela, Galapagos

Island hop your way through the Galapagos

There are some destinations in this world that were made for sailing, and the  Galapagos Islands  is one of them. Whether you want to spend your time spotting the islands’ diverse array of wildlife (think spiky marine iguanas and giant turtles) or simply relaxing on the boat with a drink in hand as the Pacific Ocean goes by, a boat tour around the Galapagos is sure to be one for the highlight reel.

A collection of pastel colored buildings on the coast of Naples in Italy

Get lost in the magic of Italy’s coast

Sailing your way down the  Italian  coast is guaranteed to be a unique adventure you’ll never forget, thanks to a variety of stops featuring pastel villages clinging onto rugged cliffsides, scattered ancient ruins from a lost empire, and tantalizingly blue waters you want to get lost in. From wandering through olive groves to laying out on pebbled beaches, cruise the sparkling Mediterranean at your leisure.

A boat cruising the turquoise Adriatic Sea in Croatia

Sail the Adriatic Sea around Croatia

On a trip to  Europe ,  Croatia  is a must-see, but when figuring out how best to explore this Mediterranean country, sailing is the way to go. Whether you want to wander through medieval towns, lose yourself in sparkling blue waters, explore lesser visited treasures or indulge in this epic country’s traditional cuisine, you’ll be in utter paradise from the minute to step foot onto your own private yacht – all aboard!

sailing yacht holidays

In  Europe , we like to go classic. A single-hulled, 50-foot yacht gives you a taste of traditional Mediterranean sailing, not to mention it looks pretty spiffy in pictures too. A typical Intrepid vessel may come with three twin/double cabins, as well as a couple of single berths. You’ll have a recreation lounge, kitchen, three shared bathrooms and plenty of deck space for lazing around and looking fabulous.

sailing yacht holidays

When it comes to sailing in  Asia , catamarans are the way to go. They’re smooth, comfortable, and nimble enough to reach those out-of-the-way cays and little island inlets. The twin hull means there’s plenty of space to stretch out –perfect for those balmy evenings and lazy afternoons. Most of the catamarans in our fleet have four twin/double cabins, three shared bathrooms, a galley (that’s nautical talk for kitchen) and a small living area. There are even kayaks and paddleboards for those that want to get a little active (and bean bags on deck for those that don’t!)

Sailing COVID-19 requirements

Sailing faqs, do i have to help sail the boat.

You don’t have to lift a finger if you don’t want to (unless you need to turn the page of your novel or eat a grape). But if you’d like to learn the ropes, that’s fine too. Your expert skipper can teach you everything you’d like to know – from tying knots to unfurling the sails.

How much time is spent off the boat?

There’s about a 30/70 split between land-based and water-based activities on our Asia sailing trips. In Europe this is closer to 50/50 however, some evenings will be spent in port or a marina. Much of this depends on the weather conditions. There are usually at least a few hours each day spent exploring ports, trekking the surrounding areas or relaxing on beaches. Of course, depending on location, there will always be the chance to wine and dine at the local hot spots.

What will my fellow travelers be like?

We have travelers of all ages and nationalities sailing with us. Approximately 60% of our travelers are flying solo, followed by a mix of friend groups and couples. The minimum age of travelers on our trips is 18, or 15 if accompanied by an adult. We don’t have a maximum age as we believe those choosing a sailing adventure are like-minded regardless of age.

Who decides the rooming configuration?

Your skipper will allocate rooms on arrival to the boat. Single travelers will be paired up with another passenger of the same sex as per the gender marker on their passport, and this may mean sharing a double mattress or twin mattresses side by side.

What are the sleeping arrangements like?

This is our most common question! People are often hesitant about the idea of sharing a double mattress with another traveler of the same sex. Sailing boats tend to be very compact (we use real sailing boats), but the close-quarters nature of this travel is part of the adventure.

Sleeping quarters are designed to utilize the minimum amount of space in order to keep the communal areas as big as possible. In fact, lots of travelers end up sleeping out on deck under the stars, as it’s warm and there’s no air conditioning on a sailing boat.

Our boats have a mix of double, twin (two separate beds or two separate mattresses side by side) and bunks.

Can I get a cabin to myself?

Single supplements are available on all trips, subject to availability. A single supplement is normally twice the regular price, however, where trips have inclusions such as meals there is a slight reduction in the supplement price. If you are interested in having a single supplement, please contact us to check availability and price.

Do the cabins have ensuites?

On many boats, bathroom facilities are shared, however, some boats have ensuites in each cabin that allow two people to share one bathroom. Our monohull yachts in Europe will have no more than two cabins sharing a bathroom. Most of our catamarans have four cabins and four bathrooms, however, these bathrooms are shared between travelers and crew. Check the Essential Trip Information of your trip for more specific details about your boat. Fresh and hot water is available for showers, and toilets are either electronic or hand-pump.

Will I get seasick?

Seasickness comes in a variety of forms. Common symptoms include fatigue, uneasiness, dizziness, and headaches. The majority of these symptoms usually subside after taking some time to adjust (usually a few hours to a day). Tylenol or Advil can help ease the transition. Heavy seasickness, characterized by vomiting, is uncommon, and it can be treated using medication. There are also a number of other self-management techniques you can try – such as sitting out in the fresh air, drinking ginger tea or watching the horizon.

For more information about beating seasickness, click here .

What will I eat?

All Asia and Galapagos Island trips feature an onboard chef who will prepare three delicious meals each day, plus snacks. In Europe, we operate with a trip kitty* (that everyone contributes to) because there’s so much great local produce to taste in each place that it makes a lot of sense to buy food at each stop! This kitty will cover some of your food and beverage costs. On all our trips, there will be an opportunity to enjoy a meal at a local port – we’ll be able to show you where all the good tavernas are. Please check your Essential Trip Information for more specific details.

*See below for information about your trip kitty.

What about alcoholic drinks?

You are welcome to drink on board - in fact, nothing enhances a sunset more than cold local beer or a glass of wine. Alcohol is BYO (bring your own), so make sure you buy what you need before departure. Some of our boats have alcoholic drinks on board that are available for purchase at local bar prices. Drinking water is free of charge.

How much luggage should I take?

Due to the compact size of the boats and the sometimes rocky nature of a sailing trip, it is advisable that you bring fabric/canvas luggage. It’s a good idea to pack light as there will usually be a gap between the boat and pier. While the skipper or a fellow traveler can give you a helping hand, you’ll need to be able to lift your bag onto the boat.

What should I pack?

Sailing trips are a little different to regular group tours. There’s a finite amount of space on the boat, so it’s best to leave the grand piano, pet llama and foldout four-person mattress at home. The same goes for bulky suitcases, ten pairs of shoes and the surfboard.

This isn’t designed to be a comprehensive packing list, but it’ll get you thinking like a real sailor.

  • A medium-sized fabric bag that can be flattened or stored easily
  • A small day pack for shore excursions
  • Some sandals or deck shoes that can get wet
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • Seasickness tablets (just in case)
  • Bathing suit (don’t worry about the snorkel and fins – we provide those)
  • Waterproof camera (for those sweet underwater shots)
  • A light weatherproof jacket (just in case of high seas or seasonal showers)

For a more detailed packing list, please refer to the Essential Trip Information of your trip.

What are the arrival and departure times?

These will vary from trip to trip – be sure to check your Essential Trip Information for more specific details. Some sailing trips will head out to sea on the afternoon of the first day. Others will remain in port overnight, however, we still ask that you join the trip at the requested time, as the skipper will need to deliver a welcome and safety briefing before organizing a visit to the supermarket to buy provisions for the trip. All travelers will have an input into the provisions, and this will be purchased from the kitty*.

Please note that due to sailing being a heavily weather-dependent activity, sometimes itineraries may need to change. We recommend allowing an additional night at the beginning and end of the trip to ensure nobody misses any onward flights.

*see ‘What is a kitty’ for more information on your trip kitty.

What is a kitty?

A kitty is a fund or pool of money that all travelers can choose to contribute to at the beginning of a trip. It’s not compulsory however, we’ve found pooling the group's money in one place makes it easier to arrange non-included group meals and tips where necessary. You'll usually eat most breakfasts and some lunches and dinners onboard the boat, so it's best to buy supplies from a nearby supermarket or grocery store at the beginning of each trip. For meals off the boat, our skippers will suggest locally-run restaurants that specialize in local produce and delicacies.

What is the maximum group size?

The maximum passenger capacity on our boats changes depending on which country you are sailing. Here’s a quick breakdown, but you can always find more specific details in the essential trip information of each tour.

Greece: 11

Croatia: 8

Montenegro: 8

  • The Ultimate Guide to sailing Annapolis, Newport, Lake Champlain

Sailing US Bases: Annapolis, Newport, Lake Champlain

Best time to rent a boat in annapolis, newport or lake champlain & sailing conditions, lake champlain, ny, usa boating holiday tips, recommended 7-day sailing itinerary from annapolis, recommended 7-day sailing itinerary from newport, recommended 7-day sailing itinerary from lake champlain, prices: how much does it cost to charter a yacht in the us, alternative sailing destinations nearby.

Explore America’s “Sailing Capital” , Annapolis, where you can discover the many rivers, inlets, bays, and quaint coastal towns of the Mid-Atlantic egion.

Meaning “Great Shellfish Bay,” the Chesapeake Bay is ripe with crabs, oysters, and more!

Take advantage of the amazing seafood on your charter.

If you visit Newport you can immerse yourself in preppy, nautical New England cultur e.

Island hop between Aquidneck Island, Block Island, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard for a classic New England sailing experience. Learn all about the history of yachting at the many sailing museums, or get transported back in time to the opulent Gilded Age on a Newport Mansions tour.

Or, if you’d like something a little different head to upstate New York for an unforgettable boat rental in the USA, on Lake Champlain !

Surrounded by rural, forested mountains, you can enjoy long summer days spent hiking and swimming. Become one with nature, secluded from busy modern life. Slow down and enjoy the tiny towns and local restaurants and watering holes.

Annapolis, Newport and Lake Champlain share fairly similar climates as they are all in the Northeast Region of the United States.

This means that the best time to visit is over the summer months, between May and October .

July and August offer the warmest temperatures - ranging between 80-90°F (27-32°C) , but will be the busiest.

If you’re looking to escape the crowds, wait until school is back in session and catch the remaining summer weather in September and October, which often stay nice and warm.

Anytime after that won’t be much fun as winters in the Northeast tend to be very cold and blustery.

Sailing conditions will differ a bit more than the weather from destination to destination. In Annapolis, you will find southerly or westerly winds of about 5-10 knots on average.

In Newport during sailing season, you will find the best wind in July, with winds reaching around 5 knots or so. Lake Champlain will have westerly winds that can reach up to 8 knots between August and December .

Where to start sailing in the North America from & how to get there

As Maryland's capital, Annapolis is well-situated and very accessible. Being in such close proximity to Washington, DC also  helps. To get to Annapolis, we recommend flying into BWI Airport in Baltimore, or into Dulles International Airport in Virginia. These are both very large international airports that offer direct flights from both the UK and the EU.

You can also get to Annapolis from Washington, DC by train (3 hrs) or driving (3.5 hrs).

Time from BWI to Base - 40 mins by car

Time from Dulles to Base - 1 hr 20 mins by car

To start your boat rental in the usa in Newport, you should fly into either T.F. Green International Airport (PVD) or Logan International Airport (BOS). T.F. is the closer option, but a smaller airport with fewer international routes. Boston is a larger regional hub and might have more options for European and UK travellers.

If you choose to fly into Boston, it is easy to get to Newport via car (1.5 hrs), or bus (3.25 hrs).

Time from PVD to Base - 30 mins by car

Time from BOS to Base - 2 hrs by car/shuttle

For your America sailing on Lake Champlain, you’ll want to fly into Burlington International Airport (BVT). Burlington has a fairly small international airport, with limited international routes, so you may want to consider flying into a larger regional hub like Montreal, Ottawa, or New York City.

Time from BVT to Base - 10 mins by car

In all three locations, Annapolis, Newport and Lake Champlain - night sailing is not permitted.

If you are interested in fishing on an Annapolis yacht charter, a fishing or crabbing license is required. For provisioning, Yacht4Less recommends Giant Food, located about 1.4 miles from the base. You might also wonder about mooring on your charter, and in the Chesapeake you will rarely find mooring balls. You will likely need to book a slip at a marina or drop your anchor at an anchorage somewhere.

For mooring in Newport, there is an abundance of yacht clubs and marinas where you can “park” for the evening. For provisioning, try the Stop and Shop on Bellevue Avenue where you can find all the essentials you’ll need for your trip.

Lake Champlain, NY

It is important to note that while you do not have to account for the tides, you should be aware of any season changes in water level. Using a depth finder will help ensure you do not run aground! Finding an anchorage on Lake Champlain is a breeze. With few crowds, and a nice muddy clay bottom, you'll find good holding and secure, stress-free anchoring. Most mooring are private moorings that are not open to the public, however, if you’re looking for a more secure option than free-swinging, Burlington Harbor offers some public mooring pendants.

It depends. For example, the most important ones are the type of boat you will choose and whether you require a professional crew on board (e.g. skipper, hostess or cook). So, as you can see, there are many factors that can shape a price for a boat rental.

10 of the best sailing holidays in Europe

Fancy Scottish cruising, or foodie island-hopping in Croatia? We pick the best trips for beginner sailors and those just happy to relax on deck

Yachting, Amalfi coast

First-time sailors can explore the Amalfi coast on this four-day yachting trip from Amalfi to Procida via Capri. There are opportunities for swimming and snorkelling, including a dip beside the Blue Grotto on Capri, plus time on land for exploring. Living conditions are fairly cramped – eight people share four small cabins and two bathrooms – but far more time is spent on deck or out and about. No sailing experience is necessary, but there will be a chance to pitch in, especially when coming in to or leaving port. The trip is suitable for ages 15 and above. Intrepid Travel also runs a week-long version, with extra nights in Ischia and Sorrento and a visit to Pompeii. Four days , including selected meals and activities, from £ 737 , intrepidtravel.com

Day tripping, Cornwall

Sailing on the Mascotte from Charlestown’s historic harbour in Cornwall

Those who aren’t sure if sailing is for them can dip a toe in the water on a day trip aboard the largest surviving Bristol Channel pilot cutter, departing from Charlestown’s harbour in Cornwall, which featured in the Poldark TV series. A morning sailing on Mascotte starts from £60pp ( classic-sailing.com ). And if you like the idea of a boat but not the sailing itself, the renovated Pen Glas fishing boat offers bunks for the night from £25, charlestownharbour.com

Seafood feast, Scotland

Danish gaff cutter Eda Frandsen

Originally a fishing trawler working in the North Sea, the Danish gaff cutter Eda Frandsen divides her time between the west coast of Scotland, exploring quiet anchorages around the Western Isles, and the waters of Cornwall. At 18 metres long, she takes up to eight guests. Locally sourced and sustainable food is a highlight, so expect wild crab, langoustine, mackerel and scallops as you explore the waters of St Kilda, the Small Isles, the Inner Hebrides or Skye. A three-night voyage on Eda Frandsen costs £550 , six nights from £1,100 , eda-frandsen.co.uk

Foodie tour, Croatia

Sail Croatia has launched a new island-hopping foodie route Food2

Sail Croatia has launched a new island-hopping foodie route, sailing on six- to 10-people yachts and mooring up at restaurants for dinner. The trip starts and finishes in Split and calls at three ports on Hvar, plus Vis, the Pakleni islands and Makarska on the mainland. The suggested venues range from traditional Dalmatian konobas and family-run fish restaurants to modern waterfront dining. One standout is Hora , a restaurant on an organic farm and winery on the island of Hvar, which offers olive oil, cheese and wine tastings, and specialises in lamb peka, cooked over an open fire. The skipper makes the reservations and can personalise your itinerary. Seven days, including transfers, excluding restaurant bills, from £332 , sail-croatia.com

A qualified skipper is joined by a specialist in conservation, art, marine biology or wild food among other disciplines, for a week’s journey around parts of the UK coast. An eigh t-day voyage around the Saronic islands in Greece from £895, venturesailholidays.com

Island adventure, Spain

Hiking on La Gomera.

This week-long sailing trip, starting and finishing in Tenerife, is a chance to visit two lesser-known Canary Islands: La Gomera and La Palma. Passengers can hike on La Gomera, explore its capital, San Sebastián, laze on the beach and swim off the boat. There is a free day on La Palma, which can be spent in the capital, Santa Cruz, or touring the island. The 17-metre yacht has five twin/double cabins, three bathrooms, deck space for sleeping under the stars, outside shower and bathing platform. Minimum age is 16 and no experience is required. Seven days from £949 , gadventures.com

Swim and snorkel, Turkey

Sedir island, Gokova Bay.

The round trip from Bodrum visits Sedir Island, also known as Cleopatra Island, the secret meeting place of the Egyptian queen and Mark Anthony, and Oren, which has Roman ruins and Byzantine churches. Guests stay in en suite cabins and all meals are included, as is paddleboarding and fishing equipment. Eight days from £875pp, responsibletravel.com

Flotilla sailing, Greece

This flotilla holiday is ideal for beginners who want to sail their own yacht: a group of 10-12 boats is guided by a lead yacht with a skipper, engineer and host. The Ionian islands are ideal for novices, particularly Paxos and the southern archipelago. A one-week holiday starts in Lefkas, calling at Kefalonia, Ithaca, Kalamos, Kastos and Meganisi. Over two weeks, the flotilla sails from Corfu to Kefalonia. Most sailing days are just 12-15 miles, with a couple of longer days, and there are swim stops en route. Social events with the other boats, such as picnics and drinks parties, are also a highlight. One week, including flights, from £575 ; two weeks from £655 , sailingholidays.com

Whale watching, Portugal

A 1930s cod fishing tall ship is now a spacious holiday vessel for island-hopping in the Azores. This trip starts and ends in Terceira, dropping anchor in quiet spots around the central islands and whale-watching up the São Jorge Channel. Stops include Graciosa, the most northerly island, which has a 40-metre-high volcanic cave and sulphurous lake, and the capital of Faial, Horta, a lively sailors’ hangout. Passengers can join a night watch and climb the rigging, or just enjoy the kayaks, paddleboards and dive rib. There are 16 double cabins and onboard meals are included. Eight days from £1,050 , sailwiz.com

MED SAILING HOLIDAYS

It's time to relax, see greece from the ocean with sailing holidays in the mediterranean.

You may have already travelled to Greece and the surrounds but sailing holidays in the Mediterranean will give you a different perspective of the Greek Islands and take you where only a boat can go. Med Sailing Holidays has created special holiday packages for a trip through the Greek Ionian Islands.

Where Can You Visit on a Mediterranean Yacht Charter

Our team has created high-value tours to the Ionian Sea, and the seven-day cruise includes stopovers and an exciting itinerary. Nothing is set in stone though, but here are a few things you can expect as part of our packages.

When you book family sailing holidays in the Mediterranean, you can visit any of the islands and see beautiful locations such as Vathi, Sami, Fiskardo, Sivota Bay, Kalamos, and Ormos Vrako.

As part of our general itinerary programme and sailing our private yacht charter in the Mediterranean, you can expect stops at Melissani Cave, the home of Odysseus in Vathi as well as a visit to the Blue Caves.

Depending on which package you choose, such as yoga, dive, wine or the fitness week, we have different stops to fit in with the theme. Talk to one of our crew members or browse through our themed weeks.

6 ultimate island-hopping itineraries for 2024

Explore the world from the deck of your own yacht with a skippered charter, bareboat or flotilla holiday. Whether you’re a first-timer, a foodie or a family, there’s a sailing itinerary to suit every type of traveller.

sailing yacht holidays

Craving a holiday with the freedom to escape the crowds and explore hidden coves, secluded bays and uninhabited islands? Dreaming of anchoring somewhere to take a dip without another person in sight? Sailing enables you to access remote spots that are often inaccessible by land and to experience the diversity of a region, exploring islands, villages and resorts in a single trip. Whether you're just starting out, or keen to set out with little ones in tow, these itineraries suit every type of sailor.

1. Best for first timers: British Virgin Islands (BVIs)

Calm seas, sheltered anchorages, reliable steady trade winds and easy line-of-sight sailing make the BVIs one of the world’s best sailing destinations for less experienced sailors. The proximity of its islands also means you only need to sail for an hour or two to gain a sense of adventure and achievement as you successfully navigate to the next port of call. Set sail in Tortola and continue on to Virgin Gorda to witness The Baths, a geological wonder made up of granite boulders that stretch down the beach into the sea. Look out for hawksbill turtles as you sail on to tiny specks of land such as the idyllic Saba Rock, and be sure to end the day with a rum cocktail or two at one of the region’s many laid-back bars, which are often perched on unblemished stretches of white sand.

sailing yacht holidays

2. Best for families: Croatia

The calm, clear waters of the Adriatic combined with favourable weather conditions in summer provide easy sailing for families and, with more than 1,000 islands dotted along the Dalmatian Coast, there’s a range of activities and attractions with short hops to keep kids engaged. Set sail from the picturesque marina village of Agana and cruise gently to islands such as Brač, Šolta and Hvar, encouraging children to help out on board while keeping an eye out for passing dolphins. With their sheltered bays and clear waters, these islands are ideal stops for families. Spend an afternoon paddling in Brač’s Bobovišća Bay, before setting sail for the remote islands of the Kornati Archipelago, a wild and beautiful national park known for its empty hiking trails. Sailing stops here can be educational, too, with a plethora of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and picturesque port towns steeped in history.

3. Best for food-lovers: Italy

Why base yourself on land to sample Italy’s incredible gastronomy when you can sail from region to region tasting the very best food and wine at numerous ports of call? Sunsail’s SailEatalia’s Italian Cuisine Procida Flotilla departs from the glamourous port town of Procida and sails to the Pontine Islands along the sun-soaked Amalfi Coast, offering stops to taste local cuisine, from classic dishes to regional delicacies as well as the country’s finest wine. Sample Ischia's iconic stewed rabbit in an independent restaurant at the top of a mountain or try the Italian coastal delicacy alici da portare (pasta with anchovies, olives and capers) in the quaint fishing village of Cetara.

sailing yacht holidays

4. Best for winter sun: Antigua

Gloriously warm weather between December and May and around 365 powdery white beaches lapped by clear waters make Antigua a popular winter sun destination for British travellers. Sailors can also relax knowing the region has consistent trade winds, safe anchorages and fairly short distances between ports, giving you more time to explore a variety of attractions at your own pace. Drop anchor in Deep Bay to snorkel around the famous shipwreck the Andes , discover uninhabited islands and visit famous places like Nelson’s Dockyard to sip cocktails and dance to the lively music of traditional steel bands.

5. Best for culture vultures: Croatia

A cultural treasure trove with 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites ranging from Roman fortresses to hilltop castles, Croatia is a mecca for sailors with a penchant for history and art. Start and finish a week’s charter in Dubrovnik to explore one of the best-preserved medieval walled cities on Earth, touring ancient citadels and Renaissance palaces, and be sure to include Lokrum, home to the ruins of a Benedictine monastery. Sail north and discover Mljet National Park and the island getaway of Korčula, thought to be the birthplace of famed explorer Marco Polo, where museums, galleries and excellent restaurants line the beautiful cobbled streets and defensive walls of the town.

sailing yacht holidays

6. Best for island-hopping: Greece

With thousands of islands scattered fairly close together, sailing from one to another is a breeze with the promise of a remote white sand or perfect pebble beach around every headland. Sailors are spoilt for choice, but the Ionian Islands, off the west coast of the mainland, are ideal for beginners looking for tranquil stretches of gin-clear water with light winds and warm temperatures in summer. Sail to Ithaca or Kefaloni in the south or to Lefkas, Paxos, Antipaxos and Corfu. While Corfu is known for its party vibe and high-end beach bars, others, like tiny Antipaxos, feature just a scattering of houses, no proper roads and a couple of charming waterside tavernas where you can watch local fishermen bring in the day's catch.

Croatian islands cruise + Land tour with Plitvice - from Zagreb

Overall it was a good vacation, Marko was always quick to respond to my questions. The reason I am giving this a 4 star instead of 5 is because there was little issues I had to deal with during our trip, we were on vacation and did not need to stress about those issues. One issue was the last minute change of ship without notifying us about it. Second, our itinerary was also changed due to the ship change. The way our itinerary read was that we were included on the daily tours, but apparently we were not, which we had to pay for one of the parks and Marko did message me saying we would get reimbursed for it, but have yet to receive that reimbursement, in the same message he informed us that they would include us in some not all the tours. The land tour part was great and went without a hitch, the cruise part not so much as the ship manager was rude to us on the first day immediately after boarding and Although Marko was great with communication in this manner, it did not help the situation when he informed the ship manager of our complaint right away as it made the rest of the cruise awkward with her and she must have also told the crew. Aida was the ship manager, she did change her attitude with us and was a bit better plus I’m sure the culture difference had something to do with her manners as I noticed a lot of Croatian people seemed to be this way. Also the captain of the Avangard, the ship we were placed in, was unfriendly and rude. We tried saying hello when we saw him and he simply ignored us. The captain also yelled at some of the guests and myself one night as we did meet wonderful people on board, they invited us back to their room for a glass of wine to celebrate a guest’s mother’s 80th birthday. We were sitting there just chatting and getting to know one another when the captain bursts in and yells at us like if we were little kids! Mind you I’m 37 and the other people in the room are all over 40. He yells at us saying “this is not a bar! You go now!!” We were only having wine to celebrate an 80th birthday not being wild! The captain left and immediately comes back again before we even have a chance to get up and yells “room is for two people only! Room is for sleeping only! You go now! Leave!!” There was no warning from him prior and he could have handled this more professionally. We also had to pay taxes at the end of the cruise, which we for sure thought they were included in the package and I also paid $50 or $60 dollars extra for some meal and my friend did not pay this but we both had the same meals so I’m not sure what the extra amount was for?? Also, for the cruise be prepared to tip all the crew at the end of the cruise, I don’t have a problem with tipping the crew as the food and drinks were excellent and our rooms were cleaned every day, but it was a hassle to worry about that on the last night as we are getting ready to leave ship. My friend and I are both under 40 and we were placed with mostly over 40, I know they say it’s the end of the season and they get older people towards the end, but we saw other ships managed by the same company with a younger guest list under 40, which seamed to be more lively. We didn’t get to swim but once on the first day of the cruise, the Hot tub was not hot at all, I tried telling a crew member and he shrugged me off saying it takes time to heat up and walked away… it must take weeks to heat up cause it never got hot. I really wish we had experience Croatia in better terms and in better weather, I’m not sure that I would go back although it’s a beautiful place to visit and we met wonderful people who were also vacationing on the same ship as us. I would like to say that Marko was great with fast communication through emails, but maybe be more discreet about taking complaints from guests so that the crew and ship manager don’t know who complains.

Sail Split to Dubrovnik / Premium Boat, Above Deck Cabins Tour

Sail Split to Dubrovnik / Premium Boat, Above Deck Cabins

The trip was excellent. The boat was small, the rooms compact and while this meant there were some comfort issues with the bathroom, it was also so easy to bond with everyone else, especially on the top sunbathing deck. The food was a highlight, each lunch better than the last - and that was before we had our BBQ feast. The trip was planned out amazingly by our guide. Bad weather meant it was unsafe to follow the itinerary exactly, but she just planned around this and made sure we made the most of our time. I recommend this tour to anyone wanting to explore another country and have fun partying into the morning.

My spilt to Dubrovnik sail with travel talk was amazing. I was on the LAV pirate ship and loved every minute. The crew on our ship including Deano, Minny, and Joesph were amazing and constantly made everyone smile! The food cooked by chef macho was well and truly above expectations and every meal was delicious! But our tour leader JoJo was on another level, she went above and beyond to make sure that everyone was happy and enjoying themselves. She would take us on a walking tour to help orientate us in every new place we went and gave us a little bit of information and lots of great ideas and touristy things to do. She really did make the trip and did an incredible job! Would highly recomend this tour to anyone!

EAST SIDE — A day-long open house for local boaters of all experience levels this weekend in East Side aims to be an accessible, fun draw for newbies to the nautical world, organizers said.

Yachtapalooza takes place 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Crowley’s Yacht Yard , 3434 E. 95th St.

The free, indoor event celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. It features free seminars and demonstrations, a pig roast, live music, a flea market Friday and Saturday and a three-day sale on nautical items from Boater’s Closet Friday-Sunday.

Organizers hope to draw 1,000 current and future mariners out to this year’s event, said Nick Fugate, sales manager at Crowley’s Yacht Yard.

Yachtapalooza will also include a boat showcase by Nautical Donations , Crowley’s charitable arm, featuring several rehabbed, budget-friendly boats for sale.

Proceeds from the boat sales will support nonprofits like the Chicago Maritime Society and the Judd Goldman Adaptive Sailing Foundation, Fugate said.

The Chicago Boat Show dropped its sailing portion in recent years and is planning a move to the suburbs next year , so this weekend “is probably the closest thing to a sailboat show that we’ve got in Chicago,” said Charles Szymanski, a Yachtapalooza organizer and president of the nonprofit Rainbow Races .

With a few dozen vendors and free seminars on topics like marine pumps and toilets, splicing line and rope, and applying epoxy and varnish, Yachtapalooza offers “anything you would need” to maintain a boat, Fugate said.

The seminars give attendees “the chance to use the products, put their hands on them and feel them, and learn a little more than watching a powerpoint on a screen,” he said.

The event is “the perfect opportunity for anyone looking to get into sailing, [with] questions about sailing or [wanting] to check out a sailboat for the first time,” Szymanski said.

Rainbow Races is one of Yachtapalooza’s featured vendors, and its members will host one of the day’s seminars. The group aims to erase barriers marginalized groups may face in getting into sailing, Szymanski said.

It’s the only U.S. Sailing-sanctioned, LGBTQ+ sailing school in the country, and the only LGBTQ+ sailing organization in the Midwest, he said.

Rainbow Races’ first day of sailing school begins May 18. The group is offering a $50 early-bird discount on sailing classes through the end of April with the discount code “hydra50.” To register, click here .

The sailing world struggles with homophobia, misogyny, elitism and other forms of discrimination prevalent in other sports, Szymanski said. Rainbow Races creates a safe community around the sport which tries to counter those problems, he said.

Despite its issues, due to the collaborative nature of sailing, it’s also “probably the most friendly sports arena I’ve experienced,” Szymanski said.

“Sailing is a true team sport,” he said. “You have to trust your crewmates with your life, and you also have to support each other.

“Sailors are aware if we don’t evolve, we die … If the wind changes, you have to change with it.”

Chicago’s sailing community is robust, particularly with groups like the Park District, local yacht clubs and Rainbow Races encouraging new people to explore the sport, Fugate said.

But with a massive lake as Chicago’s backyard and “a very strong maritime history” in the city, the community could definitely stand to grow, Szymanski said.

Yachtapalooza is a free “casual meeting of the minds” that can help spread the joy of sailing and boating and change a misperception that the community is only for the ultra-rich, Szymanski said.

Million-dollar yachts “are great to look at and to dream about, but when you get down to it, Chicago is a blue-collar city,” Szymanski said. “A lot of the folks trying to buy boats are probably younger and more [budget-conscious]. It makes this a really unique opportunity to bring people in, in a very casual, unencumbered way.”
