Für knapp über 100000 Mark bekommt man eine robuste, formschöne und gut segelnde Yacht, die hinsichtlich der ordentlichen Ausbauqualität in dieser Klasse durchaus Maßstäbe im Preis setzt. Die Slotta entspricht in allen Punkten der CE-Norm. Auf den Rumpf gibt es eine Osmosegarantie über fünf Jahre. Die im Test festgestellten Mängel (ungewohnt starke Leegierigkeit am Wind und unruhiges Steuerverhalten) wurden bereits seitens der Werft behoben. Nachprüfen konnten wir das bislang allerdings nicht. Die Slotta-Werft ermöglicht es zukünftigen Eignern, bei der Ausstattung Einfluß zu nehmen. Ein Vorgehen, das im modernen Serienbau leider selten geworden ist.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive,very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

27 high school students, 2 adults rescued after rowing boats capsize in Long Island Sound

N early 30 people, including 27 high school students and two adults, were rescued when their rowing boats capsized in Connecticut on Wednesday.

First responders rescued the group off the coast of Westport just after 5 p.m. Authorities say the water temperature in Long Island Sound was about 44 degrees.

Two sculling boats with the private Saugatuck Rowing Club capsized as the water became rough during a weather change. The rough conditions sent 18 people into waters off Compo Beach, Westport Police Chief Foti Koskinas said at a news conference.

Officials say some of the people in the water were swimming to shore and others were trying to get into other boats.

When the people in the water tried to get on a third, larger boat, it began to sink, sending more people into the water, authorities said.

The Coast Guard joined local police and firefighters in the rescue mission.

First responders used boats to rescue many of the people, while others were able to swim ashore. Two people were brought to a hospital with suspected hypothermia.

"This was a very serious incident with an incredibly good outcome," Koskinas said.

The teens, all male, ranged in age from 14 to 18. The two adults were instructors.

Everyone was out of the water and safe within about 50 minutes, Koskinas said.

The teens were put on a school bus to get warm and were picked up by their parents, he said.

Authorities said they are investigating why the boats capsized, with the goal of preventing similar incidents.

Dozens of high school students, 2 adults from Connecticut rowing club rescued after boats capsize

WESTPORT, Conn. -- Nearly 30 members of a Connecticut rowing club, including over two dozen high schoolers, were rescued from the  Long Island Sound  on Wednesday after their boats capsized.

Police say just before 5 p.m., three rowing sculls and one chase boat launched from Saugatuck Rowing Club in  Westport . Each rowing scull carried nine rowers, all males between the ages of 14-18, and the chase boat was operated by one coach.

According to police, as the boats reached Cockenoe Island, the weather began to change and they tried to head back to the club, but two of the rowing sculls began to take on water and capsized, throwing 18 students into the water. Some of the students then swam to the chase boat and hung onto the side, which caused the chase boat to sink.

Sixteen-year-old Davis Evans was on one of the boats that capsized and had to be rescued.

"It was really scary. I'm still kinda shaken up," he said. "It was really clean and then really right as we spun, it just, it got windy and the waves were just crashing into our boat and it was just filling up with water. It was really scary."

Police say a second coach launched another chase boat from the rowing club and began to shuttle people to Compo Beach Marina as first responders were sent to the scene.

"We had dispatch reports that were coming from 911 calls from the actual incident on the water. So the first calls were actually from someone reported that they were in a capsized boat and in the water," Westport Deputy Fire Chief Nicholas Marsan said.

According to police, the temperature of the water was approximately 44 degrees at the time.

"Responding units found a chaotic scene of youths swimming to shore. Some of them were arriving by boat. Some were swimming. Some were still in the water between Compo Beach and Cockenoe Island," Westport Police Chief Foti Koskinas said. "First responders immediately began providing care to those individuals who were on shore and coordinating the recovery of people in the water."

"When we finally got back on the beach, we had to run back on the beach towards the trucks and we were, like, falling and stuff. We couldn't really walk. It was rough," Davis said.

A total of 27 high school students and two adults were rescued, with at least 12 rowers being pulled out of the water by Westport Marine Police and the Westport Fire Department.

Police say the last victim was recovered from the water around 6 p.m. -- somewhere between 48-52 minutes after the boats capsized.

Two students were taken to a local hospital to be treated for hypothermia. The rest of the victims were treated on the scene.

"This was truly an incredible team effort by all. By the coaches that were involved from the rowing club and by all the first responders," Koskinas said.

When asked if he'll be back on the water any time soon, Davis said, "Yeah, rowing is my sport. It's what I do."  

We reached out to Saugatuck Rowing Club, but they declined to comment.

The police chief says they're still looking into exactly what happened out on the water. The goal of the investigation is to work with community partners to make sure something like this doesn't happen again.

BILLINGS – To reduce the possibility of invasive mussels reaching Yellowstone Lake, the National Park Service is considering a requirement that a boat be inspected and sealed to its trailer for 30 days ahead of its intended launch date.

The requirement, if adopted, would apply to all inboard/outboard and inboard jet motorboats and sailboats. The Park Service referred to such craft as complex motorized boats. An exception would apply to boats powered only by an outboard motor.

“Large, complex, trailered watercraft pose the highest risk of transporting and introducing invasive mussels, and other AIS, because they are difficult to inspect and less likely to completely drain/dry or be fully decontaminated,” the Park Service wrote. “Manual decontamination with the use of hot water is not always 100% effective in removing all mussels. Given this, a 30-day dry time is needed to mitigate the risk associated with these watercraft.”

In addition, the Park Service is proposing to “deny launch to any watercraft (motorized or non-motorized) that has previously been fouled by mussels, regardless of dry time.”

In seeking public comment through April 5 on the proposal, the Park Service cited the “increased risk of invasion” by zebra and quagga mussels, collectively referred to as dreissenid mussels, “following recent detections of these highly invasive species in waterways” close to the park.

The mussels “have caused irreversible ecological damage and extensive impacts to infrastructure and recreation in waterways throughout the Midwestern and Eastern United States, as well as in the lower Colorado River Basin,” the Park Service noted.

New infestations were detected in South Dakota’s Pactola Reservoir in 2022 and the Snake River near Twin Falls, Idaho, in 2023. The Idaho detection was the first time the mussels had made it into the Columbia River Basin.

In addition, during inspections last year and in 2022, Yellowstone officials “intercepted and denied launch to mussel-fouled watercraft, highlighting the urgency and severity of the threat.”

“Given Yellowstone National Park is located at the headwaters of the Yellowstone, Snake and Missouri river drainages, pro-active measures are required to ensure the long-term ecological integrity not just of Park waters, but also of downstream mussel-free waters in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho,” the Park Service wrote. “Failure to prevent invasion by dreissenid mussels could result in widespread negative impacts to natural resources and recreational values, and could undo over two decades of work to restore populations of native Yellowstone cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus virginalis bouvieri) within the Park. Because there are no effective eradication methods, and control/containment is both costly and environmentally consequential, prevention of an introduction is critical.”

Seals from Yellowstone National Park; Idaho State Department of Agriculture; Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks; and Wyoming Game & Fish Department will be honored pending verification of the 30-day dry time during a mandatory Yellowstone AIS inspection prior to launch. Boaters will also be asked to present the inspection receipt from the date the seal was applied.

The preferred method for submitting comments is online at parkplanning.nps.gov/yellboats. Comments may also be mailed to: Yellowstone Center for Resources Attn: AIS Proposed Changes, PO Box 168, Yellowstone National Park, WY 82190. The deadline to submit comments is April 5.

At the conclusion of the 30-day public comment period, the NPS will analyze and consider all comments received.

A final decision is expected this spring.
