What is yacht rock?

Yacht rock is more than just a musical style; it represents an era of laid-back sophistication and an easy-going lifestyle. While we may not all have a yacht, with yacht rock, we can still experience the vibes.

A genre of music that emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s, yacht rock is characterized by its smooth melodies and polished production popular among yacht-owning individuals during this era. The music often features lush arrangements and a clean, polished sound that is easy on the ears, with catchy lyrics and harmonious vocals. The overall feel is relaxed and laid-back, suitable for leisurely activities — like sailing on a yacht.

Yacht rock often incorporates elements of jazz and R&B. Saxophone solos and Fender Rhodes electric piano are common. The lyrics in yacht rock songs often explore themes of romance, introspection, and escapism. The tone is generally positive and reflective, matching the easy-going nature of the music.

Some of the most iconic yacht rock artists include Steely Dan, Toto, Michael McDonald (both solo and with The Doobie Brothers), Christopher Cross, Kenny Loggins, and Hall & Oates.

Today, yacht rock continues to be celebrated for its timeless appeal. Its smooth sounds continue to evoke a sense of nostalgia and relaxation, making it a beloved genre for many music enthusiasts.

Why do they call it Yacht Rock Radio?

Yacht rock (originally known as the West Coast sound or adult-oriented rock) is a broad music style and aesthetic commonly associated with soft rock, one of the most commercially successful genres from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s. Drawing on sources such as smooth soul, smooth jazz, R&B, and disco, common stylistic traits include high-quality production, clean vocals, and a focus on light, catchy melodies. The term yacht rock was coined in 2005 by the makers of the online video series Yacht Rock, who connected the music with the popular Southern Californian leisure activity of boating. It was considered a pejorative term by some music critics.

The term yacht rock did not exist contemporaneously with the music the term describes, which was produced from 1975 to 1984. It refers to “adult-oriented rock” or “West Coast Sound”, which became identified with yacht rock in 2005, when the term was coined in J.D. Ryznar et al.’s online video series of the same name. Understood as a pejorative term, yacht rock referred, in part, to a stereotypical yuppie yacht owner enjoying smooth music while sailing. Many “yacht rockers” included nautical references in their lyrics, videos, and album artwork, exemplified by Christopher Cross’s anthemic track, “Sailing”. Long mocked for “its saccharine sincerity and garish fashion,” the original stigma attached to the music has lessened since about 2015.

In 2014, AllMusic’s Matt Colier identified the “key defining rules of the genre:”

Who is the king of yacht rock?

The term is meant to suggest the kind of smooth, mellow music that early yuppies likely enjoyed while sipping champagne and snorting cocaine on their yachts. Significant “yacht rockers” include Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, and Toto.”

While the excessive ’80s are long gone, the specter of Yacht Rock still floats on. Which is precisely why we decided to count down our Top 10 favorite Yacht Rock songs of all time (with a few “honorable mentions” tossed in for good measure).

So grab your bubbly, your skipper’s cap, and a scantily clad femme fatale with a fake tan and crank the Nakamichi up to 11.

Of course no Top 10 list, especially one dedicated to such a maligned sub-genre as Yacht Rock, would be complete without a few Honorable Mentions:

Who started Yacht Rock Radio?

And on June 26th, 2005, an internet phenomenon was born. In 12 short but memorable episodes — first via the the short-film series Channel 101 and then online — JD Ryznar, Hunter Stair, Dave Lyons, Lane Farnham and their friends redefined an era and coined a term for the sultry croonings of McDonald, Fagen, et al.: “yacht rock.”

As “Hollywood” Steve might say, these guys docked a fleet of remarkable hits. This is the story of Yacht Rock, told from stem to stern — a reimagining of a bygone soft-rock renaissance, courtesy of hipsters with fake mustaches, impeccable record collections and a love of smoothness. Long may it sail.

The Michigan ConnectionJD Ryznar (Director, “Michael McDonald”): I moved from Ann Arbor to L.A., and ended up making friends with all these other guys from Michigan, like “Hollywood” Steve Huey, Hunter Stair, and David Lyons. Pretty much every weekend I’d have “Chinese Thanksgiving” at my apartment — we’d eat BBQ chicken and burgers, drink beer and listen to records of what I called “yacht rock.” You know, like Michael McDonald is singing background vocals and like there’s guys on boats on the covers; it feels like you’re on a yacht listening to it. And the guys were like, oh, we know this music.

I never appreciated sailing or anything in the sea until Yacht Rock became popular. Now I just want to be on a yacht drinking pina caladas with some good ol Yacht Rock playing in the background. My favorite type of Yacht Rock is the late-70’s Country-influenced music and early-80’s Soft Rock such as Christopher Cross.

Yacht Rock resurgance ?- Yacht Rock Never went away ? Yacht Rock Its a new term for great old music that I loved when growing up with ! Mike Mcdonald is a musical hero ! West Coat – Soft Rock – AOR – What ever you want to call this well polished sounding music ? It never went away in our home ! SB British Isles

A true musician, kids today are missing out on such excellent musical content. George Michael, Whitney Houston, Freddie Mercury, there will never be someone that tops these complete musicians. No auto-tune, producing their own albums, sounding exactly like their studio albums while on stage, and simply pure through and through musical geniuses!

It amazes me that you don’t understand how talented you are. I think it was the first time I heard you sing with the Doobie Brothers that I immediately felt your voice was a great contribution to the band. With every new album it just got better. I wasn’t a Steely Dan fan until I aquired my Aja CD from my ex and relieved you were singing on it. You’ve given me and thousands of others a gift we can never repay. Fan for life Tina

That’s the grizzled, gentle poppa bear wisdom of a man who can clearly see, that which only a fool believes. Don’t save her, she don’t want to be saved. Michael McDonald, the a Yacht Rock pimp of relationship wisdom. Reasoning away what a fool believes that he sees. I mean, if you can cipher out that a sentimental fool is trying to make a relationship work with a woman that doesn’t even know what love is… underlined by the hint that the fool is scared to be alone. It really is such a smooth jam that it’s hard to notice anything except that’s soulful and smooth.

I’m 53 years old and grew up in Miami, yacht rock was a big deal. It has my heart! I have a 14-year-old daughter, and she knows yacht rock! I’ll be sitting there playing yacht rock on Alexa and she’s singing songs I’m like Shelby how do you know this song and she’s like mom I’ve been listening to you play this music for years. And let me tell you my 14-year-old daughter really appreciates yacht rock.

I first heard the term Yacht Rock a week ago, although it apparently describes the music of an era and of of artists I have long admired and loved – Boz Scaggs, Doobies, Steely Dan, early 80s etc. The term itself is underwhelming though. Sounds kinda like a “Musak” of some kind. In fact, in the sense that it grew up almost side by side with American jazz ‘fusion’, and was created and played by a lot of players with that background, it is actually streets ahead of ‘Musak, or Britpop, or punk/ new wave, or and of the many other ‘waves’ that have arisen since the 1960s.

Haha -Thats true we have all been listening to a wonderful music genre for the past 45 years or so – (Just Great Music -From Great Musicians • Singers • Writers & Groups) – And nobody knew what it was called ? – FANTASTIC ! I do think it was the best genre out there even now ! P.S. …Anyone know who came up with that name ? – Are they brave enough to hold their hands up & shout It was me ! Haha – Would love to know !

Attention Yacht Rock Radio: A tune containing “boat” in its title is not de facto “yacht rock”. “Rock the Boat” by the Hues Corporation is not rock (let alone yacht rock), but rather an overplayed and lousy disco cut that long predates your stipulated “always high seventies to low eighties”. Kindly take that one to the can.

What Happened to Yacht Rock on SiriusXM?

In 2011, SiriusXM launched a new radio station dedicated to the smooth, catchy sounds of the 1970s and 1980s. The station, aptly named SiriusXM Yacht Rock, quickly became a fan favorite, playing the music of iconic artists like Christopher Cross, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, and others. But in 2019, the station’s popularity began to decline, and by the summer of 2020, it had ceased to exist. So, what happened to Yacht Rock on SiriusXM?

The Rise of Yacht Rock

Yacht Rock Radio was launched on October 29, 2011, as part of SiriusXM’s expanded lineup of dedicated channels. The station was designed to evoke the carefree, feel-good vibes of the yacht rock era, with a playlist that included hits from the likes of Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, and Doobie Brothers.

**Initial Success**

In its early days, Yacht Rock Radio was a huge success, with listeners tuning in from coast to coast to enjoy the station’s breezy, laid-back mix of soft rock, pop, and R&B. The station’s popularity was fueled by its nostalgic appeal, with many listeners seeking out a channel that played the music of their youth.

The Impact on SiriusXM

The success of Yacht Rock Radio also had a significant impact on SiriusXM as a whole. The station’s popularity helped to drive subscriptions to the satellite radio service, and it played a key role in attracting a new generation of listeners to the platform.

**The Shift to Classic Rock**

However, as the years went by, SiriusXM began to make changes to its lineup. In 2018, the company announced plans to revamp its rock offerings, with a focus on more modern and edgy sounds. This move led to the eventual cancellation of Yacht Rock Radio.

**The Last Hurrah**

Despite the changes, Yacht Rock Radio continued to broadcast for another year, with a playlist that had become increasingly eclectic and nostalgia-driven. However, by the summer of 2020, the station’s broadcast had come to an end, with SiriusXM replacing it with a new channel called The Bridge, which focused on a mix of rock, pop, and R&B.

What Happened to the Yacht Rock DJs?

But what happened to the DJs who were responsible for bringing Yacht Rock Radio to life? Some of them went on to other ventures, such as podcasting or internet radio. Others continued to work in the music industry, either behind the scenes or as performers.

Did Yacht Rock Ever Really Die?

In some ways, Yacht Rock Radio never really died. The station may have ceased to broadcast, but its legacy lives on, with many fans still cherishing the memories of its breezy, laid-back mix of soft rock and pop. In fact, in 2020, a group of former Yacht Rock Radio DJs and programmers came together to launch a new online station, Yacht Rock FM, which continues to play the music that fans of the original station know and love.

**The Future of Yacht Rock**

So, what does the future hold for Yacht Rock? With the rise of streaming services and online radio, it’s possible that Yacht Rock will continue to evolve and thrive in new and innovative ways. After all, the music of the yacht rock era remains incredibly popular, and there’s no shortage of new fans eager to discover its smooth, catchy sounds.

In Conclusion

In conclusion, Yacht Rock Radio’s disappearance from SiriusXM’s lineup may have been a shock to many fans, but it’s clear that the station’s legacy lives on. With its breezy, laid-back mix of soft rock and pop, Yacht Rock Radio helped to redefine the sound of satellite radio and inspired a new generation of music lovers. As we look to the future, it’s clear that the music of the yacht rock era will continue to evolve and thrive, in new and innovative ways.
