Vasagatan Side

Vasagatan is an Environmental Element in Raft , which contains both the Blueprint: Engine and Blueprint: Steering Wheel , as well as loose Plastic , Scrap , and several Loot Boxes with supplies.

  • 4 Unique Items

Summary [ | ]

The wreck is situated in a small lagoon, located by following the receiver coordinates found in the Radio Tower . Access to the interior of the ship is via the rear.

The interior is composed of many rooms, most containing supplies. In addition to regular supplies, the player will also find several unique items. The wreck also is home to several Lurkers . The player may also find many notes, which explain the story behind the ship and its wreckage in more detail.

The blueprints for the Engine and Steering Wheel are in the bridge at the top of the ship, access being provided by finding all the quest items. The bridge will also contain a set of Receiver coordinates to Balboa Island .

On top of the bridge, the player will find another Loot Box. In a single player game, it's hard to reach it but on PC the player can jump up easily by locking their game framerate to 30 FPS. In a multiplayer game, it's much easier to reach the Loot Box. One player just needs to jump on the other and then on the roof of the bridge.

As of Chapter 3 there are 11 notes.

Strategy [ | ]

Due to its size and layout nature, it can take a few in-game days to fully explore the wreck. It is recommended to bring supplies to explore the ship:

  • Head Light - The interior of the ship is dark. Head Lights allows the player to see. At least two headlights are recommended, as one may not last long enough to complete exploration.
  • Weapons - There are several Lurkers in the ship. They respawn frequently, on specific locations, while the player is exploring the ship.
  • Water - Lots of food items can be found throughout the ship, and as of chapter 3, drinks are provided. But, it is still recommended for the player to bring their own.
  • Food - Several crates found should contain food, but be sure to bring a small supply in case they are insufficient.

Guide [ | ]

  • Go diving near the back of the ship to find a Mechanical Component .
  • Then, enter the first floor on the back of the ship. In the first room you can find a switch on the wall to turn on the lights and a Crowbar to open the door to a corridor. Proceed through the corridor until you find the bathroom where you can find the Red Key . Follow the corridor to the kitchens where you can find the Gas Tank . Open the door at the end of the corridor with the Red Key and pick up the Bolt Cutter and a Mechanical Component .
  • Go back to the first room in the corridor and open a locker with the Bolt Cutter in which you find the Blue Key . Use the Blue Key to unlock the stairs to the second floor.
  • There, you can find Bullets and a Mechanical Component in the party room and one more Mechanical Component in the pool.
  • Go up two more floors to the fourth floor to pick up a Key Card on the dance floor. Go back down to the third floor and use the Key Card to get into an office where you can find the Green Key . You can find a Mechanical Component and a Four Digit Code on the same floor.
  • Find the stairs to the fifth floor and unlock the door with the Green Key . On the bed you can find a Lighter .
  • Go back to the second floor, follow the corridor, enter cabin 3 and open the safe there with the Four Digit Code to get the Electrical Wires . In the last room of this corridor you can find one more Mechanical Component .
  • Now, go back to the first floor to the very last room in the corridor and use five Mechanical Components on one table to build a Car Jack and build a Bomb on a second table with the Electrical Wires , Lighter , Gas Tank and Bullets .
  • Use the Car Jack on the fourth floor to move the cabinet blocking the way to a room.
  • Finally, go up to the sixth floor and place the bomb at the door. Get out of the way so the blast doesn't hurt you and then, enter the bridge. There, you can find two blueprints and the code for the next location Balboa Island .

Unique Items [ | ]

The unique items contained in the wreck are used to progress past locked doors and obstacles, eventually leading to the top.

Bolt Cutter

Trivia [ | ]

  • "Vasagatan" is the street name of Redbeet Interactive 's studio. It is named after a previous king, Gustav I of Sweden (Gustav Vasa), who was the reigning king in the mid 15th century. As such, the street would translate to "Vasa Street" in English.
  • Vasa was also the name of a Swedish warship built between 1626 and 1628. The ship sank after sailing roughly 1,300 m (1,400 yd) into her maiden voyage.

Raft: Vasagatan Walkthrough

Get some important blueprints for your raft by taking on the puzzles of the Vasagatan mega-yacht.

Quick Links

How to board the ship, how to build the bomb, how to get to the bridge.

After the Radio Tower, a luxury mega-yacht might not be your first guess when it comes to a destination in Raft , but here we have it. Vasagatan is one of the more opulent solutions to surviving on the ocean that we've seen so far, but when you approach it you'll start to notice that all isn't what it seems.

RELATED: Raft: Pro Tips For Getting Started

The yacht has run aground, and it's up to you to figure out why. The labyrinthian interior is crawling with aggressive rats, so before you embark, ensure that you have enough weapons on hand to keep the little beasts at bay.

This is a much tougher area than the Radio Tower. Darker, too, so ensure you have a headlamp equipped and enough food to keep you going. This may take a while.

Moor your raft at the rear of the Vasagatan. There are plenty of resources strewn around the surrounding reef, but ignore those for now unless you need to craft supplies for the trip. You can enter the ship through the rear; there is a platform that leads to a door with an 'Authorized Personnel Only' sign. Head through there and into the bowels of the vessel.

This area is riddled with lurkers, so make sure you always have your weapon equipped. They aren't difficult to dispatch, but they can take you by surprise when entering a room.

Flick the switch you find in the first area, it will turn the light on over a table where there is a note you can pick up; more clues about the suspect captain. There is a crowbar on a nearby table, pick it up and use it to open a door just down the hallway.

This hallway contains several rooms. The first of which contains a locker that requires a bolt cutter to access, and the second requires a blue key . You have neither of these items just yet, so continue down until you get to a bathroom, head inside, and pick up the red key .

Further down the hallway, there are two doors; the one on the right requires the red key to open, and the one on the left has some crafting tables we need to utilise later on. Enter the left-hand room and pick up the gas canister , then open the door opposite with the red key and enter.

In this area, you'll find some bolt cutters and a couple of crafting tables. They both require various pickups from across the yacht. One of the several items you need is in this room, a mechanical part , so ensure you pick that up.

Go back down the hallway, towards the room with the locker. You can now use the bolt cutters on the locker to acquire the blue key. Using the blue key on the last remaining door will enable you to access the rest of the ship.

Head up the stairs and into the bar area. On the bar itself you'll find a bullet, which we'll need to build the contraption downstairs. There is also another mechanical part near the DJ booth. Unlock the exterior doors and make your way outside, where you'll see another mechanical part sitting in the drained swimming pool.

Although unlocking the doors to the exterior of the ship isn't vital to your task ahead, it gives you a shortcut back into the ship should you choose to head back to your raft for any reason. Instead of using the stairs inside, you can just jump up the outside of the ship to whichever floor you like — barring the bridge, of course.

Go back to the bar area and make your way up the stairs to the next floor. There is a room at the end of a hallway filled with crates. Enter this room and loot as much as you like — there are a fair amount of resources here, but the thing we need the most is the fourth mechanical part. Pick that up and head back the way you came.

Head up the stairs another time to the third floor, and head along the hall until you reach a food preparation area. The last mechanical part is on the floor next to a locked door. In the centre of the room there is also a note with a four-digit code . The code is used to open a safe in the Captain's Quarters, so go down a floor and head for room number three. The safe contains electrical wires.

Make your way to the stairs again, this time heading to the fourth floor. There looks to be a karaoke dance area in the centre of the room, and a keycard lying there. Pick that up and you're off back downstairs.

On the third floor, there was a door you couldn't open due to the lack of a keycard. You now have that keycard, so open the door and head into the office. Pick up the green key from the desk.

Back up you go, now to the fifth floor. There is a door that requires the green key. This area is a rather large bedroom, and if you head towards the window there is a bed with a lighter you'll need to acquire.

All the way back down to the bowels of the vessel again with you. The room with the two workbenches is now useful. Interact with them both; you'll be able to build a car jack and a bomb .

Head up to the fourth floor, and you'll notice that a door is blocked by a rather large object. You're now about to move that object with the aid of the car jack. Entering this room gives you access to the staircase that leads you all the way to the bridge of the ship.

The door to the bridge is blocked, and can only be unblocked by an explosive device of some sort. Luckily for you, there's now a bomb in your inventory after that treasure hunt. Pop that bad boy on the door and take cover. It comes as a surprise to nobody that if you stand next to the bomb as it goes off you'll be damaged, so keep that in mind.

The bridge itself contains two very important blueprints for your journey ahead; the engine and the steering wheel. It also has a note with the coordinates for your next destination — Balboa Island.

The engine and steering wheel are vital for getting to the story areas ahead of you. After you've looted the story items from Vasagatan, it's worth giving the ship another once-over, hoovering up all the resources you may have missed. You're starting to craft more advanced items now, so simply picking up planks and plastic from the ocean soon won't be enough.

To craft yourself an engine for your raft, you'll need:

  • 5 Metal Ingot
  • 1 Circuit Board

And for the steering wheel:

  • 4 Metal Ingot
  • 2 Bolt or 2 Hinge

It's important to note that while the engine has to be in contact with the water (obviously), the steering wheel can be placed anywhere on your raft and still be functional. It's advised to place it in view of your receiver , as you'll want to be able to direct your raft and see the direction in which you should be heading at the same time.

Raft: Vasagatan Walkthrough

The second story island is more of a story ship stuck in a lagoon. It's dark and dangerous, but there are plenty of notes and items to discover.

The Vasagatan is a derelict ship that Raft players will find after visiting the Radio Tower. The first story location is already ominous, but the Vasagatan is where Raft 's story really starts to get complicated.

Finding the Vasagatan is a simple matter of finding the four-digit code at the top of the Radio Tower and then plugging it into the receiver. At that point, the radar will show a second blue dot, and players can use their sail to head straight there. What they'll find is a large ship surrounded by rocks on all sides.

RELATED: Hidden Secrets Many Still Haven’t Found In Raft

Preparations

The first thing players should do is ready themselves for a dangerous mission. The Vasagatan is dark, and so players should build and wear a head lamp (the blueprints for this item are in the Radio Tower). In fact, they may need two depending on how long their exploration lasts. Players should also keep in mind that the head lamp will constantly lose durability as long as it's in a worn item slot. A large backpack can also help by letting players take fewer trips.

Another thing players will need is a metal spear or two. The ship is full of large, aggressive rats called lurkers , and they're hard to avoid. The way lurkers attack is by lunging forward, so the best way to fight them is to dodge back, run up to stab them, dodge back, and repeat.

Exploration efforts can also take some time, so players may want to bring along food and water . However, both fruit drinks and cooked food appear in crates on the ship, so players shouldn't have to pack much.

Finally, the lagoon surrounding the Vasagatan is full of valuable items like clay and sand and especially metal scrap. Before exploring the ship, players should harvest as much as they can from the reefs and rocks below. There's even a mechanical part on the rocks that will come in handy later.

The Lower Deck

The way into the Vasagatan is through the back, which is the side of the ship players should be approaching from. Simply anchor the raft just outside the rocks and swim across to the landing area .

Players will find themselves in a dark engine room full of scrap metal. A circuit breaker on the right will turn on a single overhead light and highlight the first note players can pick up, but to see anything else a head lamp is necessary. This room also contains a crowbar, a special item that doesn't take up an inventory slot and allows players to pry open the door that leads further into the ship. Sadly, the crowbar (and other special items) are one-use only. Players can see which special items they currently have in their notebook.

Past the door is a hallway, and the first door in the hallway leads to the crew quarters. Here players will find a locker that asks for a bolt cutter. This is also where the first lurker is hiding, so have the spear ready .

The second door is a stairwell, but it's locked and needs a blue key. The third door is a bathroom that contains a red key. The fourth door leads to a kitchen, and in the kitchen is the second note, a gas tank, and a crate.

Finally, the fifth door needs the red key to open and leads to a workshop. Here players will find one mechanical part, two projects that need several special items to complete, the third note, and a pair of bolt cutters. The bolt cutters will open the locker in the crew quarters, and inside the locker is the blue key and the fourth note. At this point, players may want to head back to drop off all the plastic and metal scrap they've collected .

The Guest Decks

The stairs open onto a recreation area, and to the left players can enter a bar with a mechanical part, a set of bullets, and a note. Behind the bar is a pool with another mechanical part at the bottom. There are also a set of stairs around the side that lead up to the third deck.

Back inside, players can explore a series of guest cabins. The first is mostly empty, the second has the sixth note, and the third has a safe that needs a four-digit code. The last door on this deck leads to a cargo area with a crate.

The third deck features a balcony in the back, a door locked with a keycard, and a foredeck area with another crate. There's also a cafeteria with a crate, a mechanical part, note seven, and the four-digit code for the safe. This safe contains note eight and a set of electrical wires. By this point, players should have enough mechanical parts to go back to the workshop and create a car jack .

The Upper Decks

While it's possible to skip some of the floors by climbing up the exterior, by this point all the doors to the interior are locked from the inside and so the internal staircases are the only ways up.

Players can reach the fourth deck by using a set of stairs in the balcony area. This deck has a recreation area with a dance floor, and on the dance floor is a keycard. Players can also use the car jack to move a heavy metal box and access a guest room that contains two crates and the ninth note. Using the keycard, players can access Olof's office and get the green key.

Another set of stairs leads to a small observation area with a crate and a door that needs the green key. This key opens Olof's personal quarters, which hold a crate, note ten, and a lighter.

The top floor is the bridge, but to open the door players will need to build a bomb . Luckily, they should have all the parts they need by this point, so simply go down to the workshop, build it, return to the bridge door, and then set it off. The bridge contains two crates, two very useful blueprints, and the final note which provides the code for the third story island.

Raft: Vasagatan Guide

Click to share...

Vasagatan is the second storyline location in Raft. It can be reached by finding the radio frequency on the Radio Station (the first location) and programming the receiver with that code. Follow the receiver until you reach this abandoned cruise ship…

Vasagatan is a cruise ship which was provisioned badly for a quick getaway from the flooding of the Earth’s continents. The crew have left numerous messages talking about the circumstances under which they left port, and the problems that they faced with food shortages, disease, and rat infestations. All the crew appear to have passed away and the ship is abandoned on a small island.

To explore the ship you should first of all provision yourself with a little food, a lot of water, a headlamp, and a couple of spears to kill the Lurkers. The ship is a maze of locked doors and obstacles to pass. The map below shows the location of each item and what is needed to pass through each door. You should get yourself to the aft of the ship to begin with, at sea-level behind the pool. There is an open door here which gives you access to the hold.

Vasagatan contains a number of objects which you will need to collect to make your way to the control room at the top. Here you will find the blueprints for the Engine and the Steering Wheel, which are important devices to make your raft manoeuvrable enough to reach the next location, Balboa Island. You will also find the radio frequency for Balboa which you can follow.

As well as the necessary components, you will find 13 notes or tapes scattered around the ship. You can view these in your scrapbook.

A full pages of notes on Varuna Point in Raft

Varuna Point is the sixth story island in Raft and there are many narrative notes hidden around the area. Our Raft Varuna Point note location guide explains where to find each note to learn more about the area.

We also describe the first line of each note so you can figure out what you’re missing. If you’re having a hard time finding a note, make sure to scan the room for glowing objects, as notes will have a bit of a yellow-ish sheen to them.

Varuna Point has 7 notes , which you can see the locations of below.

Varuna Point note #1 (“Varuna Point has all ...”) location

A note on an anchor in Raft

The first note is on a weight underwater, right past the glowing jellyfish. These jellyfish will be covering an opening into the building underwater, but will move when the light shines on them.

Varuna Point note #2 (“I heard them talking about me ...”) location

A note on a table underwater next to a lightbulb

The second note is past the first one. Head up the elevator shaft and into the backmost room to find it on a table next to a spotlight part.

Varuna Point note #3 (“We don’t work on ...”) location

A note sits on a box around tons of rubble

This note is on a box with some rubble on it, found shortly after entering the tunnel originally blocked by jellyfish. It’s right before the Grabber’s traps and spikes.

Varuna Point note #4 (“When people come by ...”) location

A note on a crate next to a blueprint in Raft

This note is at the top of the crane on a crate next to a blueprint for an electric grill.

Varuna Point note #5 (“A man talking to dolls ...”) location

A note on on a metal scrap piece near a small crane

This note is on the parkour (or jump puzzle) side of Varuna Point, above the water. It’s sitting on a piece of metal by a smaller crane machine.

Varuna Point note #6 (“I would be bored ...”) location

A note on a table behind a key

This note is at the end of the spiked path and behind the Motherlode Key.

Varuna Point note #7 (Temperance code) location

A sticky note that reads “Temperance?” sits on a table next to a blueprint.

The last note of Varuna Point is the Temperance code, and it’s at the bottom of the building you must take the crane to. It is not skippable if you want to continue the story.

Raft: How To Complete Caravan Town | Mayor’s Key Guide

Navigating the Caravan Town labyrinth.

yacht island raft

Caravan Town is the fourth major location you’ll reach in Raft . After building the Antennae / Receiver, you’ll begin a quest to find Utopia. The Receiver points you to the Radio Tower — then it’s a series of new coordinates you’ll find at each stop. You’ll go from the Radio Tower to a wrecked yacht, then to Balboa Island. Completing Balboa Island takes you to Caravan Town, where you’ll need to find another set of coordinates in the Mayor’s Office.

To reach the Mayor’s Office, you’ll need his key — and navigating the complex Caravan Town requires Zipline Parts and Battery Charger Parts. You’ll need all the parts to fully explore the island and reach the Mayor’s Office. We’re going to blaze through this one and just list exactly what you need and where to get it.

How To Complete Caravan Town

The coordinates for Caravan Town are found on Balboa Island . Once you complete that area, input the coordinates from the station onto your Receiver and follow the blue dot.

NOTE : The easiest way to approach Caravan Town is from the Docks . Anchor your raft near the docks and begin your exploration there.

To complete Caravan Town, you need a Zipline Tool and the Battery Charger . The Zipline Tool is crafted from the center tower — reach the tower after collecting x3 Zipline Parts to craft the Zipline Tool .

  • Part #1 : At the town area above the docks, solve the Water Pump puzzle to raise the water in the well and acquire a zipline part.
  • Part #2 : From the Tower, go to the southwest island. Climb up to find a rocket behind a red shipping container. Place Explosive Powder in the rocket to launch it [Explosive Powder is made from Explosive Goo placed in a Smelter. Acquire Explosive Goo from Puffer-Fish. Some are in the shallow water on this island.]. Then follow the rocket to the island it flies to. Use the submerged containers to reach the island.
  • Part #3 : Go down to the base of the container tower in the center of the map. There’s a bike and a long pipe. Follow the pipe underwater — there are some areas with oxygen. You’ll find the Zipline Part and the Infirmary Key on this path.

With the Zipline Parts, travel to the Container Tower and use the workbench to create the Zipline Tool. Now you can ride the ziplines and more freely explore the island — you can also reach the Mayor’s Office on the small southern island.

To access the Mayor’s Chest in his office, you’ll need the Mayor’s Chest Key . You’ll also want to get the Battery Charger Blueprint before leaving. You’ll absolutely need this item for later in the story.

  • Part #1 : From the Docks on the southeast island entrance, enter the Port Office to find the first Battery Charger part.
  • Part #2 : Near the water pump puzzle on the east island. Go up the busted stairs near the ladder lading to the water pump. Climb onto the blue caravan at the top of the series of stairs to get this part.
  • Part #3 : Continue up the east island until you find a circle of caravans and a “Canned Goods” sign. Climb the ladder behind the sign, then climb another ladder to find a part.

Take the zipline to the Mayor’s Office after acquiring the Zipline Tool . But first, we’ll need the Mayor’s Chest Key .

  • Mayor’s Chest Key : Located in the Infirmary — on the north-most island. Find the Infirmary Key in the underwater pipe area where you acquired the last Zipline Part.

Use the Zipline to reach the Mayor’s Island, then use the chest key . The Battery Parts can be exchanged on Mayor’s Island for the Battery Charger Blueprint — not required, but incredibly useful — and the key is used to unlock the chest. Open the chest to find a note with the coordinates for our next story location. The coordinates take you to the lost city of Tangaroa .

Peanut Island day trip for Spring Break 2024: Things to know before you go

yacht island raft

Peanut Island, the 80-acre tropical island located at the west end of the Palm Beach (Lake Worth) Inlet, is a get-there-only-by-boat county park, where long strings of boats raft up while hundreds of people socialize in the shallow off-shore water.

At its best, a visit to the island can feel like a brief Bahamian vacation as the Gulfstream flows in through the inlet to bathe the palm-fringed island in warm, crystalline water. But on holiday weekends, this sandy draw and the shallow waters around it become the scene of a peculiarly South Florida party phenomenon: the aquatic cocktail party. Long strings of boats raft up while hundreds of people socialize in the shallow off-shore water.

If either, or both, scenarios sound like your kind of fun, here’s what to know before you go:

Tips before you to to Peanut Island

  • Arrive early or call ahead because "The Nut" is subject to close at capacity.
  • Peanut Island is dog-friendly.
  • No alcohol is permitted.
  • Cooler and cargo are subject to search.

Park your boat

Tie up at the boat docks. The park offers limited boat docking facilities on the east and west sides of the island. Free slips are available during the day

Arrive by water taxi. Here's some info according to the independently owned services' websites.

Peanut Island Shuttle Boat

Where:  The Peanut Island Shuttle runs out of the Riviera Beach Marina, located at 200 E. 13th St., Riviera Beach.

Price:  $20 per adult round trip; $10 for children six years old and younger.

Times: Trips are every 25 minutes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. The last boat to the island is at 3:00 p.m.

Contact:  Call 561-777-0438 or visit the website for more information: www.peanutislandshuttleboat.com

COVID note: Face masks are no longer required on the boat.

Sailfish Marina: Peanut Island Shuttle service

Where: The Palm Beach Water Taxi runs out of the Sailfish Marina Resort, located at 98 Lake Drive, Palm Beach Shores.

Price:  $20 per person round trip.

Times:  7 days a week: 9:30am, 11:30am, & 1:30pm Returning: 11:30am, 1:30pm, 3:30pm, & 5:30pm

Contact: Call or 561-844-1724 or visit the website for more information:  www.sailfishmarina.com/water-taxi .

You’ve arrived. Now what?

Here are highlights on what to do once you get to Peanut Island.

Snorkel:  There are two snorkeling spots — a small reef and a larger lagoon — on the east side of the island, where the incoming tide sweeps in an ever-changing variety of sea critters. Cushion starfish as well as reef dwellers such as parrotfish and angelfish are common visitors. Visibility is superb but be wary of strong currents.

Walk: A 1.25-mile paved trail circles the entire island. From it, you have access to a boardwalk through the mangroves on the west side. On the east side, a boardwalk spans the reef area.

See:  Birds and sea life from the observation deck on the island’s south side and two boardwalks.

You can find the latest information about Peanut Island activities on the county site.

By Far Our Best Experience!

“We have been white water rafting on many rivers in many states. This is by far our best experience. We had Erin as our guide and she was knowledgeable AND patient with us. She really knew the river.”

Far Exceeded Expectations!

“The best experience! Far exceeded expectations! First time rafting and the guides were helpful and informative. Not only were they experts in training but had the best lame river jokes. Stayed entertained throughout. The photos and commentary were great too. Will definitely be back!”

Slide title

I’ve now done this full day adventure trip twice because I love it so much. When I had some friends visiting me from out of town it was the first thing I scheduled. What really makes it so good is the quality of the river guides. They’re so good at what they do; you feel safe while they create a super fun atmosphere for the trip. And the rapids are no joke.

yacht island raft

Incredible moment two exhausted sailors are plucked from the raging South Atlantic 1,450 miles from land after their hero Swiss captain made sure they were safely inside a life raft before going down with his ship

  • Captain Benno Frey died saving his fellow crew mates
  • The two men he saved were adrift for hours before they were picked up
  • They are said to be incredibly distressed over Frey's passing

The heroic skipper of an ocean-going yacht went down with his vessel in a violent storm after first making sure his two crewmen were safely inside their emergency life raft.

Captain Benno Frey, 72, ran into a tempest with 60mph winds and 25ft-tall waves which battered his 54ft-long boat until it began taking on seawater and started sinking quickly on March 14.

His modern yacht should have weathered the strong storm but it is believed to have struck a container washed off a cargo ship, which left a hole below the water line.

Benno, a Swiss national, and his crew members Brazilian Marcelo Osanai, 38, and American-Swiss national Balthasar Wyss, 52, desperately tried to keep it afloat.

But just after midnight, father-of-two Benno realised their situation was critical and set off an international distress Mayday alert that they were going down fast.

The trio stayed on board the stricken Nina Pope for a short time, until in an act of selfless heroism Benno launched the crew rescue life raft in darkness into the ocean.

He ordered Marcelo and Balthasar to unclip their safety lines and handed them a £350 tiny handheld Garmin satellite SOS transmitter and get in.

But before Benno could unclip his safety line and join them the boat suddenly went down taking him with it and his last action was to cast the inflatable raft with his crew on it free.

Their desperate SOS was picked up by the Maritime Safety Authority South Africa in Cape Town, 1450 miles east of their location which was the nearest landfall to the terrified shipwrecked survivors.

Adrift in mountainous seas sealed in the life raft Marcelo and Balthasar were at the mercy of the Atlantic as the high winds and crashing waves threatened to capsize them.

But unknown to them the MSASA in Cape Town had relayed their distress Mayday to the nearby giant super tanker Front Pollux which had diverted course for a daring rescue.

And in this incredible mobile phone footage shot from the deck of the 825 feet long crude oil carrier the vulnerable eight-foot by eight-foot life raft is seen located in heavy seas.

The thankful survivors feared the worst saying later that they felt finding them would be like 'finding a needle in a haystack' and that they owed their lives to the tiny £350 gadget.

The Garmin hand held satellite transmitter - less than the size of a packet of cigarettes - had been beaming out a signal that guided the 62,000 ton tanker to their exact position.

Both sailors can be seen looking out of their rescue inflatable up at the crew far above who had positioned their tanker to take the brunt of the storm and protect them in the lee.

The Front Pollux dropped a steel walkway half way down their vast hull then a crew member went down and dropped a rope ladder from that into the ocean for the survivors to grab.

The two thankful sailors who had paid to sail on the Nina Pope the 3600 miles from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to Cape Town, South Africa, grabbed the lifeline knowing they were safe.

Despite being in the lee of the tanker now in calmer waters the exhausted sailors can be seen using the last of their energy climbing up the wooden slats of the 50ft swinging ladder.

Once on board the super tanker they were given warm clothing and hot drinks and medically examined but apart from exhaustion and shock were both otherwise uninjured.

Both of the rescued businessman who had taken sabbaticals from their high-powered jobs to fulfil a sailing dream are said to be 'highly distressed' at losing Benno.

A source on the Front Pollux said: 'They saw the skipper Benno go down. It seems he could not get his safety line undone in time as the yacht went down very quickly.

'If he had not cast the life raft adrift immediately it would have been dragged down to the bottom with the Nina Pope. Both the survivors have been finding it very hard to take in.

'The South Atlantic is vast and in stormy seas with an 8m swell it is almost impossilbe to spot a tiny life raft but the SOS transmitter they had was what saved both their lives.

'We had the signal and just had to follow it until we got in the vicinity and slowed the engines and scoured the area with binoculars until someone on the bridge spotted it.

'That little bit of kit made all the difference out there' he said.

Benno's distraught ex-wife Beatrice, 60, from Roggwill in Switzerland said: 'Although we parted after 11 years of marriage in 2019 we were still the very best of friends.

'Benno had been sailing for 50 years and in 2000 he got his International Skippers Licence and had always wanted to sail the world and with his retirement his dream came true.

'Benno lived his days on his beloved Nina Pope sailing the world and was living his dream. He was a very good man and had so many friends in every port he called in.

'His children Tamara, 43, and Joel, 40, are as you can imagine taking it very badly. I have spoken to his crew but they are too upset to go into the full detail of exactly what happened.

'It is a very difficult time for us all right now' said food and nutrition expert Beatrice at her home in the Canton of Bern.

Benno's two children are from a previous marriage and had both sailed with him many times.

Peter Millington who runs a news website on the British island colony of Tristan da Cunha revealed his friend Benno had called in twice whilst sailing across the South Atlantic.

Peter said: 'We are a stopping off point between Brazil and Cape Town and Benno anchored on Monday last week and came on shore to get water and provisions.

'We have a photo of him and Marcelo and Balthasar having a lunch here of lobster tails and potatoes with salad and they were using the wifi to talk to their friends and family.

'Benno understood a storm was coming in but the harbour here is very small and not suitable for yachts and it is too dangerous to try and ride out a storm at anchor.

'It was not the biggest of storms and Benno decided the safest way forward was to set sail and the three of them were waved off in their tender and we took a pic of them sailing away.

'Tragically less than 48 hours later the Nina Pope and Benno were lost to the sea. His wife Beatrice emailed the island to ask if any of our boats could offer help in a rescue.

'Unfortunately our fishing boats are inshore vessels and it was too far away. I saw the Mayday and followed the rescue and saw the Nina Pope's signal disappear later on Wednesdy.

'I feared the worst that she had sunk and sadly I was proved correct' he said.

The Nina Pope had sailed 140 miles from Tristan da Cunha before she hit the container and was still 1450 miles from Cape Town when the crew abandoned ship into the Atlantic.

The Nina Pope had set off on February 27 for the three-week crossing with digital commerce expert Marcelo from Rio de Janeiro and hi-tech expert Balthasar as paying crew.

Married dad Balthasar who was originally from Basel, Switzerland, and now lives in Seattle, USA, had been advertising on Facebook to pay to crew on a yacht trip.

He said on it: 'After 30 years of business (hi-tech) I would like to make my dream of crossing oceans and exploring remote places a reality on a sabbatical from work.

'I have basic sailing experience and I am very interested in everything about sailing and navigation as I am considering buying my own sailing boat in the future.

'I will pay my expenses and a contribution to the cost of sailing and do the chores!'.

A spokesman for the South African Maritime Safety Authority said: 'After midnight last Wednesday a Swiss flagged sailing vessel the Nina Pope reported taking on water.

'They had activated their emergency beacon close to the rescue point border of Uruguay and South Africa but we agreed to take on the search and co-ordinate rescue efforts.

'The tanker Front Pollux diverted to the Mayday beacon and later Wednesday it reported finding the lift raft then signs of life in the raft and recovered two surviving crew members.

'The Front Pollux reported that the skipper was lost at sea when the Nina Pope sunk and further reported they would be returning the two surviving crew to Cape Town.

'SAMSA convey their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

'We also express our heartfelt gratitude to all Search & Rescue partners especially the crew of the Front Pollux for their valiant efforts in the very difficult rescue operation' they said.

The Front Pollux anchored off Cape Town on Monday and the two survivors were transferred by the NSRI lifeboat to the shore where he MSASA greeted them.

Both sailors lost all their possessions on the yacht and emergency documents are being prepared by their embassies so they can return home to Brazil and the USA.

They declined to requests to be interviewed by the media.
