X56 first look: New model combines powerful hull with spacious accommodation
- June 25, 2020
X-Yachts continues to flesh out its Pure X range, which already includes five models from 38-63ft, with the new X56
The ethos of this range, which appeals to those looking for a state-of-the-art performance cruiser , is now firmly established. “Around 80% of cruising is reaching or downwind, which is where these powerful hull shapes excel,” says X-Yachts founder and chief designer Niels Jeppesen. “A good cruising boat needs plenty of stability so that no one gets scared when the wind unexpectedly increases.”
The new X5 6 has maximum beam carried right aft and twin rudders. Advanced hull construction materials and techniques save weight, some of which is put back at the bottom of the keel, increasing both initial and ultimate stability.
“The hull shape also gives lots of space for accommodation,” adds Jeppesen. “That’s exactly what the market wants.”
Customer feedback is also being incorporated into the new designs. This includes an innovative tender handling option, with an electric swinging arm to lift a 3m RIB, complete with a 10hp outboard, into the tender garage.
There’s also an electric passarelle that stows neatly below the port side deck. A watertight bulkhead ahead of the tender garage is a reassuring feature for owners planning long-distance sailing .
The standard sail plan for the X5 6 includes a 100m 2 mainsail and 60m 2 self-tacking jib sheeted to a recessed track. Options include a larger 106% jib and an inner forestay for a furling heavy weather jib that, very neatly, sheets to the self-tacking car.
The standard mainsheet is a German system taken to a single point on the cockpit floor, with options for a central pod with a winch, or a full-width recessed electrically powered traveller.
A choice of booms will allow the option of a conventional slab reefing mainsail, or in-boom reefing. Other options include a taller carbon rig, electric under-deck Code 0 furler, plus retractable bow and stern thrusters.
Below decks, eight different interior layouts are offered in three different styles and with three different veneer options, giving a total of 72 possible variations.
The first X5 6 will be completed in November this year, with a public launch scheduled for the 2021 Düsseldorf boat show . A discount of €45,000 is offered on the first four boats. It will be followed 12 months later by a new X6 0 .

Freed from the constraints of racing and rating considerations X-Yachts could explore every avenue in pursuit of their latest and best ever all round high performer
Imagine a yacht that’s thrillingly fast and fun to sail but isn’t shaped and built according to the constraints of a rulebook. A responsive, rewarding yacht that sails and handles brilliantly in a wide variety of wind and sea conditions, on all points of sail, and hasn’t been optimised just for windward-leeward courses. One with more than ample space, comfort and contemporary style inside but without any compromises made at the expense of sailing balance or performance. A yacht that can easily handle the wildest weather you’re ever likely to encounter, but also excels at fair-weather family cruising. That’s the design DNA of X-Yachts’ Pure X range.
The new X5⁶, launched into the icy waters of Baltic Denmark in the depths of December for initial sea trials, is designed, engineered and built to take this ongoing evolution of the perfect all-round performance cruiser to a whole new level. Thomas Mielec, X-Yachts’ director of design and engineering, was on board for the sea trials and sent good news back to the yard.
‘We came back not only cold and with homework to do, but also with a really good feeling and a great deal of pride that the entire organisation behind the development of the X5⁶ has definitely succeeded in creating a magnificent performance cruiser well prepared for providing future owners with superior sailing pleasure,’ he wrote. ‘Even though we’ve only been able to test in fairly light to medium wind conditions, X5⁶ hull number one has already provided us with a distinct big-boat feeling of safety and comfort, where almost everything can be operated by the touch of a button if you want.
‘This of course also means that vast amounts of technical equipment need to be tested, adjusted and calibrated to make sure everything works as designed and engineered. The focus for the first tests has been sail handling, sail balance, rig trim, alignment and tuning the twin rudder steering system.’
‘The idea behind the X5⁶ is to complete the Pure X range,’ explains Kraen Nielsen, the hands-on chief executive of X-Yachts, who was also on board for the sea trials. ‘There was a real demand for a boat of this size. It offers a lot more space so you get a really big, nice cockpit to work in or to enjoy yourself in. You get very spacious aft cabins, so it’s a boat that delivers something different to the previous boats in the range. We’re convinced that the X5⁶ will exceed our expectations.’
One stand-out feature of the X5⁶ (and indeed all X-Yachts) is epoxy infused hull construction. This technique gives very precise control over the glassfibre laminate, allowing it to be optimised for stiffness and strength while saving weight, and the use of epoxy gives a better end result than the polyester or vinylester resins that most builders use: not just stronger but much less prone to distortion in the topsides over time. The entire hull is then cured and baked in precisely controlled conditions to further optimise its material properties. In the X5⁶, all weight saved by this advanced construction technology is used to increase the yacht’s stability.
While many (some would say most) cruising yacht brands are focused on maximising their appeal to novice sailors, X-Yachts is aimed squarely at connoisseurs. The Pure X range offers easy handling, of course, but a great deal of emphasis is placed on delivering the best possible sailing experience. Boatspeed and aesthetics are very important but balance, helm response and ergonomics are paramount – and many small, carefully considered details add up to a more enjoyable time on board not just for the helmsman but for the whole crew.
Some of these design details have been gradually evolved and perfected over many years while others are introduced with every model added to the range. A new one on the X5⁶ is the sprayhood bay, recessed into the coachroof and covered with a pair of front-hinged doors on gas struts that leave the coachroof totally flush – and the hood completely hidden when not in use, subtly but substantially improving the clean, uncluttered aesthetic of the streamlined, lowprofile cabin top, which can be beautifully finished in luxurious laid teak. A large expanse of solar panels can also be recessed into the coachroof, giving enough charging capacity to keep the yacht’s batteries topped up throughout a long-distance ocean passage while preserving the X5⁶’s clean silhouette.
The outboard-mounted wheel pedestals are another nice touch, enhancing the sense of wide-open space in the stern, with integrated foot chocks and elegantly curved teak helm seats. An optional electric mainsheet traveller can be recessed completely below deck, eliminating a trip hazard whilst allowing precise control of mainsail shape. There’s also the option of a two-seater pushpit bench that doubles up as an ideally located liferaft stowage bracket. The coaming-mounted primary and secondary winches (with seven rope clutches on each side) are close enough to the twin helms for easy operation when sailing singlehanded, but with ample elbow room for a trimmer to work comfortably and efficiently when the boat is fully crewed. Capacious rope bins in the aft ends of the cockpit bench seats keep all the rope tails tidy and are almost invisible. Forward of the winches, the whole cockpit is entirely free of ropes and other potential hazards, with plenty of secure, comfortable space for passengers (and off-watch crew) to stretch out and relax.
X-Yachts puts a huge emphasis on designing and refining the sailplans of its boats, believing (and they’re not wrong) that it’s one of the most important design features. The marque’s racing pedigree can be felt as soon as you grab the wheel, but the other key parameter for the sailplan of the X5⁶ and its sisters in the Pure X range is flexibility. Up to three foresails – 88% self-tacking jib, 100% genoa and huge code zero – can be kept furled and ready to go. The self-tacker sheets to a track neatly recessed into the cabin top to preserve the clean, uncluttered aesthetic. The genoa is sheeted to a pair of longitudinal tracks with its sheets and car adjusters led aft and ducted under the coachroof.
The rig itself is 11/12 fractional on a tapered, triple-spreader mast with discontinuous rod rigging, which is deliberately over-specified – a feature common to all X-Yachts – which makes it extremely stiff as well as super strong, promoting good sail shape and trim while reducing stretch and preventing the mast from pumping whilst sailing upwind into a heavy sea.
Below decks, the clean, timeless design aesthetic that you’d expect in a premium Danish yacht is obvious at a glance. A more careful look reveals excellent ergonomics, lots of welldesigned stowage throughout, and the fine craftsmanship in all areas that defines the brand.
One important feature is invisible – and indeed imperceptible, but that’s the point. The engine compartment is sound-insulated to superyacht specification using a heavy 8mm solid rubber layer, 50mm of noise-deadening rockwool and covered with perforated aluminium plating. All openings are sealed to eliminate noise.
‘The design team has focused on Nordic interior styling with a lot of attention to detail like the ambient lighting, small pieces of leather, and in general you get a great atmosphere from the daylight that comes into the saloon,’ Nielsen explains. ‘This is for sure a spacious boat but we would never compromise sailing pleasure so every thought goes in the direction of combining good living on board with good sailing capabilities and this boat is absolutely no compromise.’

The New Performance Cruiser X-Yachts X5⁶ Has Been Launched
Yesterday (2020 November 25) late in the afternoon, the new X-Yachts X5⁶, a fifty-six-foot performance cruising yacht, was launched for the very first time.
After rigging, in-water tests and adjustments of technical installations a thorough series of sea trials will be conducted under close supervision of the design & engineering team.
“ We feel convinced that the X5⁶ will live fully up to our expectations, but realistically and historically there will always be minor adjustments with a new model, first of its kind in the Pure X Range, and we are eager to find all mistakes and points of improvement now, in order to have the corrections implemented as early as possible “, Thomas Mielec, Director of Design & Engineering, explains.
And he elaborates: “ After the sea trials she will go back to the assembly hall for final fitout of interiors etc. to be ready for the X5⁶ world premiere in our show rooms in Haderslev ”.
As the first X-Yacht , the deck is produced in an epoxy infusion process. The X-Yachts design team explains that time was ripe for implementing this step after several years of experience infusing epoxy in the hulls. Epoxy infusion construction offers control over the laminate allowing it to be optimised to maximise strength and stiffness, and saving weight at the same time.

New X-Yachts X56: Superior Sailing Pleasure
The X-Yachts X56 is the first of two all new 50 foot+ models that will take the pure X range to a whole new level, blending luxury and style with performance and cruising capability
The X-Yachts X56 is a fifty-six-foot performance cruising yacht designed with serious cruising in mind; be that crossing the Atlantic, or exploring beautiful Mediterranean islands. The X56 joins the hugely successful and critically acclaimed X-Yachts Pure X Range.
The design philosophy was very clear from the outset and yard placed a huge emphasis on giving the owner a superb and comfortable sailing experience, on a yacht that is easy to handle by all the crew. The helm position offers excellent visibility and agile handling that puts you in control. The modern outboard mounted pedestals free up deck space, maintaining a clean area, free of hazards. From the inception of the Pure X Range, flexibility has been key. X-Yachts took the best from their performance and cruising ranges, which is why the X56 can be specced with a self-tacking jib for ease of handling when short handed and longitudinal genoa tracks to maximise sailing performance. The X-Yachts X56 has a large moulded bow-sprit as standard allowing asymmetric spinnakers to be flown from the front and has space for a Code-0 furler in front of the main forestay, the innova-tive new shape of the bow allows both the furlers to be pushed further for-ward maximising the J measurement to improve upwind performance.
The X-Yachts X56 is a showcase of luxury interior design; the yacht has a great sense of light and space, whilst maintaining practicality and functionality, with a design that works as well out on the open sea as moored in a harbour. The flush deck hatches and coachroof side windows allow a lot of light into the boat and offer great ventilation. Large hull windows offer fantastic views from the spacious saloon. The well-proportioned saloon gives the yacht a spacious feel, but well-positioned hand rails and good furniture placement ensure it is always safe and easy to move around no matter the heel angle. The central pouffe seat can be converted into a coffee table and repositioned as required – this offers fantastic flexibility and practicality. The spacious owner’s cabin features a large floating effect double berth.
The berth can be lifted, supported by gas struts, to access a large storage compartment below. The owner’s cabin has a large double wardrobe as standard and optional freeboard lockers. Both aft cabins are spacious with excellent ventilation from both a large deck hatch and an outboard opening portlight in the cockpit coaming. Both have convertable ‘split’ berths that can be converted from a pair of single berths to a large king size double. Photos & video X-Yachts

X-Yachts unveiled its new 56 foot cruising sailboat
The X56 is one of the largest X-Yachts produced in Denmark.
“The first hull has already provided a distinctive large-ship feeling of safety and comfort, where almost anything can be operated at the touch of a button if desired,” explains Thomas Mielec, Director of Design and Engineering at X-Yachts . . “This also means that large amounts of technical equipment have to be tested, adjusted, calibrated, etc. to ensure that it works as designed and designed.”
The first series of sea trials focused on sail handling, sail balancing, rigging adjustment, alignment and tuning of the dual rudder system. The North Sails team hopes to re-launch the ship for a heavier air test of the remaining sail inventory, which includes a Helix Structured Luff Code sail and a jib sail. This will allow them to get a better idea of the yacht’s capabilities before it returns to the assembly hall for final interior fitting.
The world premiere will take place in the X-Yachts showrooms in Denmark on January 16, 2021.

With the introduction of the X-65 in 2007, X-Yachts started to infuse hulls for performance yachts utilising epoxy resin. Epoxy infusion construction offers fantastic control over the laminate allowing it to be optimised to maximise strength and stiffness, whilst saving weight.
In the X56 all weight saved is used to increase the yacht’s stability enabling the crew to have a more relaxed time and to feel safer and more comfortable. The fact, that the hull is cured, baked at high temperatures for almost 24 hours, not only optimises the hull material properties but also minimises the risk of the darker coloured hull surfaces to suddenly start posturing, losing the surface finish.
With over 10 years of experience building epoxy infused yachts, X-Yachts took the decision in 2018 to build all models using this technology, one of the only yacht builders to do so.
Interior craftmanship Danish design and architecture is famous for its clean, timeless style. The X56 is a showcase of luxury interior design; the yacht has a great sense of light and space, whilst maintaining practicality and functionality, with a design that works as well out on the open sea as moored in a harbour.
The flush deck hatches and coachroof side windows allow a lot of light into the boat and offer great ventilation. Large hull windows offer fantastic views from the spacious saloon.
High quality materials The X56 is offered in a range of finishes: Nordic Oak veneer is standard on all furniture, and optional veneers include a lighter White Tinted Oak and a more traditional Teak.
All veneers are hand-selected in Italy by our specialists from one of the most exclusive suppliers for the marine market for high quality yachts.
When combined with the top-quality craftsmanship X-Yachts is famous for, this translates to affordable luxury. As with all models in the range, there are a large number of options for soft furnishings;
