At the request of the shipyard Fountaine Pajot naval architect Daniel Andrieu and designers from Pierangelo Andreani Studio initially designed the MY5 marine catamaran exclusively as a power catamaran. Cat rightfully took its place in the line of motor yachts of the shipyard between MY 4.S and MY6. Like its older brother, MY5 (formerly MY 40) also collected a number of prestigious awards, one of which is “ Best Multihull Motor Yacht ” (up to 50 ft) by 2019 Asia Boating Awards.

It is a very stable boat, which makes it attractive for both family cruising and commercial cruising. The space of all decks is thoughtfully divided into zones of work, rest, and dining. Recreation options include the opportunity to sunbathe or swim with the whole family or in the company of friends - there is enough space for everyone.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

Even the participants of the charter will comfortably accommodate on the foredeck area of 8 m², in the cockpit, saloon and flybridge of 16 m², not to mention the cabins.

It is from the bathing platform that the entrance to the cockpit opens from two sides: one is wide, through which you can load products, equipment and gear, the other is narrower.

In the cockpit there is just a huge L-shaped sofa, in front of which you can install an additional table assembled to organize a meal in the fresh air. This is convenient, since a wide entrance to the saloon opens from the cockpit, and the galley is located there immediately on the starboard side.

The cockpit also has excellent access to both engine rooms through large hatches. In the center there is a place for storing life rafts.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

In addition to stability, the catamaran is as safe as possible for both adults and children: wide side decks, stairs and flybridge are equipped with grab bars, as well as railings, ladder steps are wide and covered with non-slip material.

On the foredeck is a beautiful C-shaped sunbathing area with two full-size reclining sun loungers. In the center of this living room, you see a trapdoor that opens up to a huge locker where fenders and water sports equipment can fit.

While we are still at the foredeck, pay attention to the anchor, which can be controlled from all decks, including control panels in the saloon and on the flybridge.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

The photo above clearly shows the sunroof, which protects those who are on the flybridge from the sun. Here all passengers of the cat can freely sit. For this, comfortable sofas and poufs are provided. It is equipped with a bar, refrigerator, ice maker and barbecue.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

The control panel is placed on a small elevation, from where an almost 360-degree view opens. The helmsman can see all parts of the floats, the port side is visible through the gangway leading to the flybridge. The helm of MY5 looks like a car steering wheel, the tilt of which is adjustable. Instrument panels and equipment control are displayed here: engine diagnostics, throttle, joystick, multifunctional marine display, etc.

This is the working area of the flybridge in addition to the lounge and dining area. But there are places for family members or friends so that the helmsman does not feel lonely. A very social decision.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

The saloon is also conditionally divided into several zones. With wide sliding doors it can be combined with the cockpit, which significantly expands the usable area in addition to the 16 m² of the saloon itself.

At the starboard there is the kitchen area: you get a well-equipped galley with microwave or oven, gas hob and dishwasher. Opposite to it a large refrigerator with a freezer is installed. The seating area, or dining area, is slightly raised compared to the level of the galley. This opens up a wider view through panoramic windows around the perimeter.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

A long sofa on the port side with upholstered seats, backs and poufs and an armchair make up the living room. And together with the table, which is transformed with the help of an electric drive, upholstered furniture makes up a dining area, where 6 people can freely accommodate, and actually even more if desired.

And here is the working area of the saloon - the skipper can climb down here in bad weather. It is equipped with a full-fledged control panel, exactly the same as on the flybridge. Although, the overview of the entire catamaran is not as good - the stern is not visible.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

Let's start the description of MY5’s the cabins by saying that they are two meters high, which is unusual for a 40-foot boat. The master cabin is just a small apartment with all the amenities that start with a double queen-size island bed. The porthole opposite the bed exceeds its width and has an opening part, so that the inhabitants are provided with natural light and fresh air.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

Before getting into the main cabin, to which the entire port side is given, you have to go through the foyer, where the main electrical switchboard and a spot for a washing machine are located. The master cabin is equipped with plenty of storage space too.

A separate huge bathroom with an open shower overlooking the sea and a separate closed toilet - a layout that is almost never found on cats of this size.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

Depending on the choice of equipment, you can have MY5 with three or four cabins. In the case of a three-cabin configuration, the master cabin remains the same, and two cabins are equipped in the starboard float with a shared bathroom and a separate shower.

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

  • Overall length, m: 13.94
  • Width, m: 7.7
  • Draft, m: 1. 2
  • Displacement, t: 14.7
  • Water tanks, l: 2 x 350
  • Exterior design (Architect): Berret-Racoupeau Design
  • Interior design: Berret-Racoupeau Design
  • Mainsail type: Fully battened
  • Jib type: Furling genoa
  • Mainsail area, m²: 77
  • Jib area, m²: 52
  • Engines, hp: 2 x 50
  • Option engines, hp: 2 x 60
  • Fuel tanks, l: 2 x 470

Sailing catamaran Tanna 47 from Fountaine Pajot replaced the Saona 47 - the new model in the old case proved to be so striking and effective that we gave it the fourth place in our rating.

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

To the left and to the right along the side there are entrance ladders with wide comfortable steps. Between them there can be a platform, which is an optional element. It can be used to carry a dinghy or as a bathing area.

The layout of the cockpit differs little from its predecessor. The table on the port side can accommodate 8-10 people. A couple more vacationers can be accommodated on a sunbed on the port side or on a long sofa along the transom.

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

A gas barbecue is very convenient on deck: you catch a fish and fry it right there, and the smells will be carried away by the wind. Of course, here you can fry not only fish, but also meat, vegetables, etc. Refrigerator and freezer are also an option, there are spots for them in the cockpit.

From the cockpit we rise to the helm station. From the control post you can enjoy an excellent overview of the entire catamaran, the nose of the left hull is slightly blocked, but you can navigate by the railing. And to see the stern, you will have to bend down, but this procedure does not cause discomfort.

The helm area and the sailing area on of Tanna 47 are separated, but the winches from are within easy reach, just behind the helm.

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

The panel contains all the tools, the readings of which are important for the helmsman, additional to throttle controls, chartplotter , etc. The stoppers of all three winches are brought to one point. Below is a pocket for sheets and halyards.

The sailing equipment includes the classic genoa - Fountaine Pajot did not follow the new fashion for automation here either.

On the flybridge, manipulations with the sails do not threaten anyone if at this time they are located on one of plentiful sofas or sunbeds. There is room for a table and extra seats.

In the bow there is a large compartment for the anchor chain, where fenders can also be stored. On top of the hatch of this compartment and next to it, you can place several mats and organize a natural solarium.

There are also few changes in the saloon: the usual rounding of furniture, a luxurious corner sofa, a side ottoman, a sliding table - everything is very stylish and beautifully lit. Two more large skylights have been added to the panoramic glazing of the cabin.

A small hatch above the stove acts as a hood. The galley is equipped with all kitchen utensils. There are several refrigerators in the cabin. Above one of them is a large chartplotter, and the usual place of the navigator practically does not exist in this version.

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

Three and four cabin versions are available. In the 3 cabin version, the master cabin is in the port float. The bed is really big, with access from three sides. In the transition to a full-fledged bathroom there is a wardrobe, shelves, work and dressing tables.

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

Aventura 14

The flagship of STGI Marine, the Aventura 14 motor catamaran holds the record for the number of cabins among 44-foot yachts - there are six of them. At the same time, the catamaran has seaworthy characteristics for long-distance, almost oceanic crossings at a maximum speed of 22 knots, which can be developed by the Yanmar 2x400 hp engines installed on it. At a cruising speed of 16 knots, the cruising range can reach 1,300 nautical miles.

But in the engine compartment of the yacht, you can put engines with a power of 550 hp, then the cat will develop a cruising speed of up to 18 knots, and a maximum speed of up to 27. In two tanks plus one additional tank Aventura 14 can carry 1.5 + 1.5 + 1 = whopping 4 tons of fuel.

Aventura 14

Nova Luxe took a direct part in the creation of the vessel, offering to make it as environmentally friendly as possible. To do this, they have developed a powerful solar battery specifically for this model to be placed on the flybridge. Its capacity (more than 7 kW/h) will fully serve the needs of passengers. And additional electrical equipment will reduce the use of diesel engines on sunny days.

With such high performance, passengers and crew are provided with incredible comfort to work, rest and travel, which is the hallmark of the Aventura brand .

Aventura 14

A very wide hydraulic platform at the stern accommodates several motorboats, rafts or jet skis. There is also a spacious aft garage for a pair of folding bikes or equipment for diving, hunting or fishing.

There is a table in the cockpit, which can comfortably accommodate up to 16 people on soft sofas and side benches or chairs. And since the saloon and cockpit are separated by wide sliding doors, you get a huge common space, which is also located on the same level.

Aventura 14

Huge 26 m² flybridge has its own kitchen area, which includes a grill, sink and a compact refrigerator for drinks, ice cream and fruits. The dining area, that serves also as a relaxation area or a living room, includes a large table and sofas with backs, surrounding the table from 3 sides.

Aventura 14

A huge space below the working area can be equipped with a solarium or a SPA with a jacuzzi, some place gym equipment there. Of course, with a jacuzzi filled with water, you cannot develop maximum speed, after all, the additional weight is almost 3 tons.

Aventura 14

The working area includes a control post, as well as a comfortable seat in front of it for several people, the height of which is adjustable. The height of the steering wheel itself, made in the form of an automobile steering wheel, is regulated in the same way. The instrument panel displays the performance indicators of the equipment and its control elements, as well as a high-quality marine display with a chartplotter.

Aventura 14

The spacious saloon with electric table for 12 people has a full galley with all the equipment, a large double-door refrigerator with a large freezer, a wine cabinet, a microwave, a dishwasher and a washing machine, etc.

The working area is a control post, the dashboard of which is located behind the steering wheel and to the right of it. All the controls of the Aventura 14 are placed here – the automation of the yacht’s management is so advanced, that this vessel can be considered a “smart yacht” by analogy with a “smart home”.

In general, the motorboat seems as comfortable as a compact mansion on the water can be. This feeling intensifies when you go below deck and find that you can straighten up freely, straighten your shoulders, and there is still enough space above your head.

We have already said that the cat is designed for 6 cabins if you are going to use it for charters. But if you are looking to buy an Aventura 14 catamaran for personal use, you will definitely choose the option with a master cabin and 2, 3 or 4 guest cabins, depending on the composition of the family and the number of close friends you can invite on a cruise.

The master cabin will then take up the entire float and house a huge island double bed, table, sofa, lots of closets, shelves and hidden lockers. Of course, a separate bathroom with a rain shower, toilet and a furnished hallway.

Aventura 14

Private bathrooms in guest cabins differ from the master cabin only in size.

Every time you look at the new premises of Aventura 14, you really can’t tell whether you are cruising on a 44-foot power catamaran or picking a new house for permanent residence.

Of course, when ranking the best catamarans up to 15 meters in length, we could not help but place the Excess 15 fully electric cruising sailing catamaran in second place. This is a new brand of catamarans from Beneteau-Lagoon-Janneau, focused on performance, while having all the properties of a cruising catamaran, full habitability and build quality from a major manufacturer.

Excess 15

The catamaran is equipped with electric engines instead of diesel ones. It has become a kind of research laboratory used to study the effect of installing electric motors on serial yachts.

The boat has a very spacious saloon with open access to the cockpit through wide sliding doors. In this case, one of the tables in the L-shaped galley can serve as a bar in the cockpit. This allows you to combine two zones into a single space for organizing mass entertainment with refreshments and dancing.

In the saloon, a large soft sofa goes around the table on three sides, where up to 12 people can fit. The galley is equipped with all the most necessary kitchen equipment - stove, oven, refrigerator, etc. Around the entire perimeter of the cabin there is glazing that provides excellent visibility and natural light, and opening transoms in them provide natural ventilation.

Excess 15

The cockpit also has barbecue facilities and a fridge for drinks and ice cream. In the cockpit there are sofas with backs, one of which goes around the table on both sides, the other is on the transom, and the sofa opposite the table has a spacious locker.

Drop-down seats in front of the helms and a small bimini over the helmsman's head have already become a hallmark of this range. The helms with a control panel are located in the cockpit on both sides of the catamaran. The panel contains the tools to manage the equipment, in particular, electric motors, as well as control drives for some equipment and devices such as an autopilot and a thruster.

To the left and right of the steering wheels is the engine control knob. Near the steering wheels there are manual or electric winches, at the choice of the buyer. Above the cabin and part of the cockpit there is a retractable roof - also a trademark of the line. An automatic jib is included as standard.

Excess 15

An excellent view opens up from the helmsman's seat, in particular, due to the fact that the saloon is completely glazed and through it the bow of the catamaran is perfectly visible. When maneuvering, the helmsman does not have to crouch or stretch his neck - he has a full view of both floats both in the stern and in the bow.

Naval architects and designers abandoned the idea of flybridge. But on the foredeck, you can equip a large sunbathing area using a deck and two trampolines.

You get fairly roomy, but not overbearing, guest cabins fore and aft of the same float, each with its own porthole, large double bed and bathroom.

The master cabin completely occupies one of the hulls and is divided into bedroom, living room and bath areas. In the recreation area you will find a large island double bed, two portholes, shelves. Further in the corridor there are cupboards, sofas, several tables. And in the other part there is a huge bathroom that contains everything that is required for hygiene and water procedures: a shower, a washbasin, a latrine, etc.

If desired, you can choose a package for 4 cabins or with a separate cabin for the skipper in the bow of the vessel.

Under the engines, Excess 14 goes very quietly. And when sailing, the electric catamaran can recuperate water energy.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

  • Brand: Fountain Pajot
  • Overall length, m: 14
  • Width, m: 6.6
  • Draft, m: 1.1
  • Displacement, t: 16.3
  • Air draft, m: 4.25
  • Exterior design (Architect): Andrieu Yacht Design
  • Interior design: Andreani Design
  • Engines: IPS 500 Volvo 2 x 380
  • Option engines: IPS 650 Volvo 2 x 480
  • Fuel tanks l: 2 x 1000

The MY6 (formerly MY44) motor cruising catamaran is still one of the world leaders in the 13.4 m (44 ft) double hull boat market. Shipyard Fountaine Pajot Motor Yachts received all the most prestigious awards for this cat, including “Best Multihull Power Yacht”, “European Power Boat of the Year” and “Best Passagemaker”.

Daniel Andrieu and Pierangelo Andreani once again demonstrated their engineering and creative potential, as a result of which the catamaran received excellent seaworthiness and unique living spaces.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

The yacht is stable with a good draft (1.3 m), behaves confidently even at a speed of 25 knots.

With a length of 13.6 m and a beam of 6.5 m, there are 3 or 4 double cabins with three bathrooms, a spacious cockpit, company cabins, a flybridge, a foredeck solarium and a bathing platform. At the same time, as is customary in Fountaine Pajot’s catamarans, the entire space is divided into zones - working, relaxing, dining, kitchen, etc.

In the bow there are several spacious lockers where fenders and ropes can be stored. Anchor and anchor winch can be controlled using a remote control or from one of the control stations located in the saloon and on the flybridge.

Foredeck is transformed into a great place for a vacation - a sunbathing area or an evening bar - with reclining loungers and a portable table with recesses for bottles and glasses.

We climb the flybridge stairs with railings and wide steps. Here the distribution of zones is thought out to the smallest detail. Recreation area is also a dining area, with comfortable sofas and a large built-in table, a refrigerator for drinks and ice cream.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

Another very large folding sofa - a real rookery - is located on the port side. Friends or family members resting here will brighten up the skipper's stay at the helm, which has the shape of a steering wheel.

The working area is located on the starboard side, directly opposite this huge sofa. The control post is equipped with a very comfortable wide chair.

The control panel contains all the main instruments, as well as the controls for all helmsman actions, and a multifunctional marine display. The height of the steering wheel is adjustable. Management is simplified using the joystick.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

All this splendor is protected by a sun-protection curtain on the roof, which can be moved if you want to sunbathe.

The same control post is located in the cabin. Huge portholes located around the perimeter provide natural light and excellent visibility. The portholes have opening parts that allow you to ventilate the cabin.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

Incredibly large space, although filled with excellent upholstered furniture, leaves a lot of room for free movement. At the table-transformer, 10 people can fit without constraining each other. This table, if desired, can easily be converted into a coffee, dining or even an extra bed.

Corners of the table and galley furniture are rounded for safety. The galley is located on the port side - despite its compactness, it has all the necessary kitchen equipment, including a stove, refrigerator, etc.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

As you can see in the top photo, a wide sliding door opens from the saloon to the cockpit. This combines them into a single space, which allows you to throw grand parties with a large number of guests, turning one of the galley tables into a bar counter.

In the cockpit there is a comfortable soft sofa with lockers under the seats; a portable table can be placed here.

There is also a locker with a life raft, a gas cylinder and necks for refueling the tanks. Fresh water is connected to the shower in the cockpit.

Under the cockpit hatches there is a capacious engine compartment, which provides free access to engines and other technical equipment.

Using the wide steps from the cockpit you get to stationary platform, a real personal beach spot with an area of 9 m². The cockpit floor and platform are covered with natural teak.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

Maestro version includes a master suite that is completely dedicated to the owner. Surprisingly spacious, it has a real island bed, a table, an extra sofa and wardrobes for storing clothes and other things.

A huge porthole with a "window" provides the cabin with fresh air and natural light. The height of all the rooms of the catamaran MY6 is striking - even a regular cabin’s ceiling is at least 2 meters high.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

The master cabin has a private bathroom and toilet. Two double guest cabins located in another float are also provided with separate bathrooms with toilets.

There is a choice of 4-cabin charter version, two in each float, with shared bathrooms for each couple.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

The MY6 power catamaran is designed exclusively for IPS systems and has a cruising range of up to 1,000 miles. Safety and comfort on long journeys are provided for both passengers and crew of this magnificent vessel.

The top 5 long-range luxury motoryachts reviewed

When the ocean calls and the lotto numbers drop, here are the dreamboats that call. read our top five luxury-boat reviews....

Okay, we'll 'fess up. Our boat driving hasn’t been without life’s luxuries this year. We've been to the gated marinas, set foot aboard a fleet of high-end motoryachts, and put to sea in long-range liveboard cruisers that represent the pinnacle of boat ownership.

Designed for going places, each with a range of more than 1000 nautical miles, these five favourite dreamboats pack all the comforts of home, stay-away autonomy, emergency redundancy, and the latest user-friendly technology.

If not shelling out a few million or five for one, you can at least share in the spoils vicariously with these luxury-boat reviews brought to you from the pneumatic helm chair, full-beam stateroom, marble en suite and, yes, spa bar.

5.  RIVIERA 68 SPORTS MOTOR YACHT Our luxury long-range adventure boat of the year is without question the stunning Riviera 68 Sports Motor Yacht. To experience this boat offshore in 1.5m seas, while rocketing along at 28-30 knots, is something else. The tank-tested Frank Mulder-designed hull is poetry in motion — graceful fluidity and tactful elegance — with a fine entry that slices the sea like a honed knife through tuna sashimi.

The standard 1550hp V12 MAN engines deliver power in the most sophisticated way. Coupled to the Seatorque shaft system in V-drive configuration, the engines' vibration levels are the lowest we’ve experienced on a boat this fast. The smooth delivery of power and torque is on tap all the way from displacement speeds, where your range is 2000nm-plus, right up to a flying 31-32 knots. Acceleration is mighty, though you don’t necessarily feel it in the enclosed flying bridge, where sound levels are just mid-60dba when cruising offshore.

Incredibly quiet, beautifully smooth, seaworthy and stable, the Riviera 68 Sports Motor Yacht delivers the ultimate luxury boating experience,  powerful and fast ride and above all a sophisticated drive. The top-end of town has voted and the Gold Coast boatbuilder is now rolling out a fleet of 68 and 72 sister ships to buyers all around the world. The pinnacle of Australian boatbuilding arrived with a big splash this year.

2. FLEMING 58 On the new Fleming 58, a trick Express Joystick System from Twin Disc converses with GPS and computer brains to slip the hydraulic bow and stern thrusters and MAN i800 engines seamlessly in and out of gear. With the press of a button, the big boat holds position and heading while you attend on-board duties like preparing the lines, fenders or hosing the anchor.

For a cruising couple commanding this 58-footer in and out of foreign marinas, the Express system with Joystick makes docking a breeze. But that's just the tip of the iceberg on this highly advanced pilothouse passagemaker.

An Australian-designed long-range liveboard boat with a hull from Norman Wright and Sons, the 58 is the latest offering from Fleming after hundreds of thousands of sea miles buy its founder Tony on a range of sister ships. There's more accommodation, a bigger engine room, and greater living spaces, yet this new Fleming 58 still has the low-profile and planted hull, with a stately motion, that has made these boats coveted for serious coastal and transoceanic travel.

More at our full Fleming 58 review with video.

3. HORIZON E75 The Horizon E75 tested late last year left a lasting impression with its twin 1150hp Caterpillar C18 ACERT engines, 7200lt of fuel, lightweight carbon-fibre flybridge so as to accommodate, oh my gosh, a spa and bar. Add the biggest 9.0x ABT Trac 300 stabiliser fins available for this size boat and you won't spill a drop as you immerse yourself in the tub and the boating high life.

Compared with the E73 it supplants, the new 75 footer has a much-improved layout with open-plan living areas, an extended cockpit, aft galley and enclosed flying bridge for all weather cruising. But with the spa, box jellyfish, crocs and sharks remain at arm's length no matter where and when you want to dive in. Leave Cairns, round Cape York and arrive at The Kimberley.

Our full Horizon E75 review.

4. MARLOW 58 When we put to the sea in the Marlow 53 Explorer off the Gold Coast, our thoughts switched to heading north as though someone flicked a light switch. Equipped for your ‘seafari’, this owner/driver motoryacht has joystick docking, gyro stabilisation, 17in Raymarine touch screens, Miele oven/cooktop/dishwasher, a utility room with laundry and additional freezer, even a central vac system.

But the Marlows' greatest claim to fame are their engineering and, moreover, the unique hull designs with Kevlar lay-up. The patented Velocijet twin-strut keel design reduces drag, improve performance and efficiency, really aids downsea tracking, and supports the boat and in an upright position with the props and rudders tucked under should you bottom out.

More at our Marlow 53 review.

5.  MARITIMO M59 Long-range Australian-made motoryachts have an another apt flag bearer in the $2.5m Maritimo M59. This wide-beam planing hull has an impressive turn of speed, large accommodation plan, enclosed flying bridge, walkaround decks and various transom arrangements.

While the base engines are 725hp Volvo D11s for a modest 26 knots top speed, most M59s have been fitted with the 800hp D13s. This $57k upgrade creates a 28-30 knot comfortable cruiser, with a fast 500nm-plus range at 17-20 knots. A great boat for coastal cruising in Australia.

Read our Maritimo M59 review.

So if your Lotto numbers drop, Aunty Gertrude pushes up the daisies and leaves you a nugget, or your long and successful working life has reached its summit, consider one of our top five ultimate long-range luxury motor yachts. Take it from us, you won’t be disappointed.

The best small cruising yachts in 2023

  • Theo Stocker
  • September 29, 2023

Despite bigger yachts dominating the new boat scene in recent decades, there are still any number of builders making new smaller cruisers. Here's our pick of the best small cruising yachts in 2023

best 20m motor yacht

We have seen a surprisingly large number of builders going against the grain to bring small cruising yachts to market in the last year or so, ranging from trailer0-sailers to smaller traditionally-styled options. Here, we’ve rounded up 4 of the best small cruising yachts launched in the last year.

Typically this size of yacht appeals to those who are looking for a day sailer or weekender and will often offer reduced draught in able to allow you to go creek crawling or nose your way into otherwise hard to get to anchorages.

Once you’ve seen one, Bente yachts are unmistakable. We revisited the brand’s first boat, the Bente 24 , a couple of issues ago, which has been around for 10 years or so. The brand then launched the striking Bente 39 which was immensely innovative, but the company ran into financial difficulties. Now under new owners and a more stable footing, a third model has been launched, which I can’t wait to test sail. The Bente 28 is unlike any other 28-footer.

The hull is cutting edge with wide transom, double rudders and full bows providing a powerful hull form as well as volume below. Construction is polyester GRP foam sandwich, with the basic version being heavier hand lamination, and the more expensive Edition version being vacuum infused. While this is a boat designed to be fast, it’s a long way from a wild racing boat.

Displacement is a not outlandish 3.2 tonnes and draught is 1.6m (there’s an option for a 1.95m performance T-keel with lead bulb that’s 100kg lighter), so it fits well within the scope of a sensible cruising boat.

The Tide 25, built by MFH in north Germany – began its life as a Dehler SQ25, but the mould was sold off when that company hit hard times. Plumb bows and stern with a long hull chine, bevelled deck edge and twin rudders put her on trend, and maximise performance under sail and accommodation on board.

On deck, she has a large cockpit with benches forward and four decent lockers. Under the cockpit sole there’s access to what would be engine space for a diesel inboard, now housing batteries for the electric motors.

Opt for the sport version, and you’ll get beefed up deck hardware and a minimalist fit out, with the mainsheet traveller across the transom, while the comfort version has a smaller main with the mainsheet coming to a fixed point on the cockpit sole forward of the helm. The rig has aft-swept spreaders and no backstay.

best 20m motor yacht

The fact that the accommodation of the Pointer 30 is designed around a Nespresso machine, enshrined in glory, tells you a lot about this boat. It was conceived as a comfortable, fast and stylish weekend cruiser that you can take your friends down to for a coffee before a nice sail to somewhere for lunch. This is a boat that knows what it is about. Tea drinkers, don’t worry; there’s still a gas hob to boil a kettle.

The sail area isn’t vast, but this looks to be an easily driven hull. A below-deck furler setting a genoa that sheets to tracks on the coachroof is standard, with a self-tacker being optional.

The fixed bowsprit houses a bow roller, and a tack point for furling offwind sails – the gennaker takes her offwind sail area up to 100m2, set from an aluminium twin-spreader rig with adjustable backstay. She has a powerful kicker, but no traveller for the main, which is sheeted to a raised plinth in the cockpit sole.

Below deck the layout is simple, clean and quietly stylish. Headroom is restricted, dictated by the low freeboard and elegant lines.

To port, the heart of the boat is the ‘coffee bar’ on a shelf in the moulded hull liner, next to a small dinette-style table with two leather swivel armchairs. The forward of these chairs spins round to face a neat lift-top desk (though the drawer below isn’t large enough for a chart).

Swallow Yachts 32

Aimed at sailors who may have owned larger yachts before but want to downsize, Swallow Yachts owner Matt Newland explained that he ‘wanted to build a boat that was fun and easy to sail, simple to maintain and had timeless looks with as low an environmental impact as possible.’

Though not a true launch-and-sail trailer sailer, a four-by-four will still be able to tow the 32 on her own trailer, as boat and trailer come in at under 3.5 tonnes, and within the 2.9m overhang limit.

With a keel-down draught of 2.8m, a fine entry at the bow and broad aft sections, this boat promises to be a good performer. You can sail with the lifting keel in any position for shoal waters, but lift it all the way and you’ve got a draught of just 40cm for creek crawling and drying out.

Newland has tried to draw lines that are timeless rather than trendy while a retractable bowsprit, backstayless carbon rig and square-top mainsail ensure she is right up there in terms of her contemporary design and latest tech.

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a yacht? Probably those huge luxury cruisers reserved for the high society folks, right? Well, that’s true, but those are a special group of ships referred to as luxury yachts.

The questions you need to be asking are – What is a yacht? At what point is a yacht regarded as a ship? And, what exactly makes a yacht a yacht? Here’s a little boating lesson for you.

A yacht is any fast cruising watercraft used for pleasure or sport. Yachts can be classified into cruisers, superyachts, and mega yachts. The difference between them all boils down to their respective sizes.

Luxury vessels that are less than 12 meters long fall in the class of cabin cruiser yachts – or simply, cruisers. Those that measure more than 24 meters are classified as superyachts. Anything that’s 50+ meters long is a mega yacht. Anything larger than a mega yacht is generally referred to as a ship and generally describes a working vessel as opposed to something recreational.

So, as you can see, you don’t necessarily have to be swimming in a ton of money to become a yacht owner. The only difference will be in the size of the craft you get. Clear enough?

Without further ado, here are the 15 best yachts, as well as a few useful tips on how to choose the best one.

How to Choose the Best Yachts – Buyer’s Guide

A yacht is a pretty big purchase. So, you need to know what to look for when choosing the right one for your needs. Here are a couple of pointers that might come in handy.

Type of Yacht

The type of yacht you buy depends in large part on your intended use for it. Most yachts tend to fall into one of three categories – For water sports like wakeboarding , fishing motor yachts, or the overnight cruising variety. Once you know what kind of recreational activities you plan on engaging in, that should help narrow down your choices.

Next, you need to consider what size of yacht you should get. Do you have a young family that you intend to expand in the coming years? Do you plan to use the vessel for day cruising, or do you intend to spend a couple of nights on board from time to time?

Will the yacht be just for you and your significant other, or do you plan to frequently entertain several guests on board? This will advise whether you should buy a cabin cruiser yacht, a superyacht, or a mega yacht.

In a perfect world, you would have all the money you need to buy any kind of watercraft you want. Sadly, that’s not the reality we live in. Keep in mind that yachts don’t exactly come cheap. So, even if you’re planning to purchase a small yacht, you’ll still need to spend quite a bit of cash to get it.

The best thing to do would be to set a budget and compare the different models on offer from different manufacturers . Aside from the boat’s purchase price, you also need to think about the costs associated with owning a yacht. These include insurance, repairs, maintenance, cleaning, and the vessel’s general servicing.

Figure out what kind of comfort and convenience features are a must-have for you. How many cabins should it have? Do you need it to have a summer grill up top? Or will the one in the mini kitchen below-deck suffice? Ensure that the yacht you get has all the amenities you need.

Last but not least, before you sign any purchase contract, ensure that you schedule a sea trial with the dealer. That way, you get a true feel for the boat before you buy it.

Look Before You Leap

If you’re in the market for a shiny new yacht, any of the 15 vessels we’ve detailed in this guide will make an excellent choice. Do your homework beforehand, and make sure your desired craft has all the features and amenities you seek.

Use the tips we’ve outlined in this guide to help you choose the best yachts from all the different options that are hot on the market right now. Happy yachting!

In the meantime, if you’re looking for the best aluminum fishing boat , we’ve got you covered. Check out our review for our top picks.

best 20m motor yacht

The latest and greatest yachts under 24 metres

Sam Fortescue reveals the best new models and refreshed favourites in petite packages....

wallypower58X

Under Ferretti Group , the Wallypower range has burgeoned. With all the looks for which the brand is renowned, but a slightly curvier aesthetic, this 17.5-metre’s appeal should be broad. Designed for outboard propulsion, the four motors are offset slightly on the aft platform, allowing access to the water or dock via hydraulic steps. A huge sunpad on the aft deck can be shaded by a carbon cocoon, while the hardtop offers more sheltered lounging.

Lazzara LSX 67 Limited Edition

US brand Lazzara is pitching its 20.4-metre Limited Edition LSX 67 as the ultimate “sport express yacht”. The six-cabin contemporary design boasts an unusually large full-beam master suite with great views and direct access to an aft deck entertainment space and a sizeable beach club. Twin Volvo IPS 1350 engines offer a top end of 35 knots.

Due to become Pardo’s new flagship, the 22.86-metre GT75 aims to combine the brand’s most comfortable interior to date with striking performance. The latter comes from a lightweight composite build and up to three 1,000hp Volvo IPS engines (the engine room is also ready for Volvo’s forthcoming hybrid units). The interior theme is “villa on the sea”, with an owner’s cabin aft and optional access from the beach club.

Nordhavn 71

Built on a brand-new hull, the 22.56-metre N71 marks the fourth generation of these ocean-going trawler yachts. Customisation possibilities are minimal but owners are offered the choice of two layouts: three cabins plus an upper saloon or four cabins. Loose furniture and upholstery is the choice of the owner. The first hull, for a serial Nordhavn owner, is currently in build in Taiwan.

Azimut Seadeck 6

Hybrid has arrived at Azimut – and this is the first model of the new series. The yard says the 17.25-metre will achieve 40 per cent lower emissions thanks to hybrid propulsion and lower onboard consumption. The Fun Island concept describes the aft sunpad and flush cockpit, while the interior design goes for less-is-more to emphasise the connection with the sea.

Horizon PC68

Taiwan’s composite cat specialist continues to grow, with 55 yachts sold to date. Horizon's new 20.73-metre PC68 makes full use of the 7.5-metre beam with a vast main deck that can be specced as an open-plan saloon or shared with the owner’s cabin. A partly enclosed flybridge adds to the already-generous aft deck and foredeck lounge.

Wider Wilder 60

Details are scant, but the promise of a highly customisable “40-knot platform for fun” make this 18.9-metre Wider offering intriguing. This all-aluminum vessel is designed as a crossover between a chase boat and performance cruiser, with a shallow one-metre draught allowing for play close to the shore.

Princess S80

The new flagship of Princess’s sports bridge range shows off sweeping lines drawn by a team of in-house designers and Italian studio Pininfarina . Deep glazing shades much of the dining and lounging space on the main deck, with an awning extending over the sunbathing. With an elaborate foredeck lounge and the open flybridge, entertaining space is copious. The lower deck offers four cabins, including the full-beam main.

Sunseeker Superhawk 55

Superhawk is Sunseeker’s performance sub-brand, and there have been several takes on the genre. At 17.13 metres, the 55 is the biggest yet, and follows the open sports cruiser model of its predecessors. The go-faster styling is backed up by ample power and fingertip control from a centre-console-style dash. There are sunpads fore and aft, with three pilot seats and a wet bar in the cockpit. Two spacious double cabins (there’s an option for three) lie below.

Riva 76 Bahamas Super

This typically elegant 23.32-metre Riva is a reprisal of the successful 76 Bahamas Super launched in 2016. It has been restyled by Officina Italiana Design in black and white with stainless-steel trim. New features include controls for the lighting in the sunpad’s armrests and an electro-hydraulic steering system.

The smallest boat in CL ’s line-up, the 19.7-metre CLB65 is built in the same mould as the CLB72 and is still designed for adventure. It’s a pocket flybridge yacht with two helm stations and twin wing stations for easy manoeuvring. In a first for the Fort Lauderdale-based brand, there is an aft galley with a hinged door and a flip-up window. Owner’s accommodation lies amidships, with a VIP in the forecastle and an additional twin.

Twenty of these 13.1-metre boats have been sold off plan, but the first one won’t splash until this summer. And you can see why they’re flying off the shelves. With design from Sinot , the model boasts flowing, feminine lines, but the twin 480hp drives give real bite – up to 40 knots and a fast 26-knot cruising speed. Flexible accommodation allows two to overnight in comfort, with plenty of deck space for day guests.

Eegle 20m first look: World’s first electric trawler yacht takes on diesel rivals

  • Electric boats
  • Top stories

The Eegle 20m looks set to be the first production electric trawler yacht and it has the speed and range to rival its diesel-powered counterparts...

Silent Yachts may have led the way with its electric cruising catamarans but now a Swiss entrepreneur is hoping to appeal to monohull enthusiasts with the first battery-powered trawler yacht , the Eegle 20m.

Designed by Spanish naval architects Bravo Yacht Design, whose previous clients include Rodman , Horizon and Nuva Yachts, it is a 65ft (20m) swift trawler yacht with a top speed of 20 knots and a range of 80nm in electric boat mode.

For longer journeys, a petrol-powered generator extends the range to over 1,000nm at its normal cruising speed of 7.5 knots. The first boat is already in-build at French yard Martinez Construction Navale with an expected launch date next year.

According to lead designer Tia Simo, the trawler style is particularly well suited to electrification. Its shallow keel allows all of its 600kWh lithium ion batteries to be installed below the water close to the centreline.

This low centre of gravity makes for an extremely stable design, which keeps roll to a minimum and makes the standard fin stabilisers even more effective.

The four compact 150kW motors also take up far less space than big diesel engines and are packaged below the tender garage floor.

Eegle-electric-trawler-yacht-cross-section

No need for an engineroom as the motors and batteries fit beneath the floor

With no complex cooling systems or daily engine checks to worry about, there is no need for a conventional engineroom, freeing up almost all of the lower deck for accommodation.

Each pair of motors is linked to a single gearbox and shaft. In displacement mode, only one motor is running on each shaft but for shorter bursts both motors are engaged to push it into semi-planing mode.

To make the most of this, the hull has been tuned to be at its most efficient at either 7.5 knots or 18 knots.

Shallow keel is ideal for battery location below the water

The garage itself houses the 50kW petrol range extender as well as a pair of Jet Skis or a single larger tender.

The reason for specifying a petrol rather than diesel generator is partly because of its smaller dimensions and quieter running but also because its 1,000-litre fuel tank can be used to refill the Jet Skis as well.

The final part of the equation is an array of solar panels on the flybridge hardtop and wheelhouse roof capable of generating up to 9kW.

Petrol range extender shares its 1,000 litre fuel tank with jetskis

This is enough to propel the Eegle 20m at a modest 3.5 knots on solar power alone, although realistically it will be used in tandem with the batteries to extend the all-electric cruising range beyond 80nm and top-up the batteries when at rest.

The batteries can also be recharged using shore power, with the time taken depending on the number of available sockets and rating of the power supply.

With no engineroom eating into lower deck space, there is room for a larger than normal full-beam owner’s suite towards the aft end of the hull with a separate dressing room, study area and bathroom.

Eegle-electric-trawler-yacht-owners-cabin

Vast master suite has a dressing room, study and bathroom

This still leaves space for two further doubles amidships and a VIP suite in the bow. The other unusual feature of the design is a full-beam saloon that spreads across the space usually occupied by the side decks.

The extra width makes for a very spacious main deck that’s all one level with a curved breakfast bar next to the aft galley, a generous lounging area amidships and a twin helm station forward.

It has all been left open-plan to maximise sightlines and make the most of the 360-degree views. A door next to the helm gives access to the foredeck but it’s not entirely clear how you’d deal with fenders or carry the lazy line forward when mooring stern-to.

The man behind the new Eegle brand, Swiss entrepreneur Adrien Antenen, made his money in recycling plants and wants to use his expertise in sustainability to launch a new range of environmentally friendly electric craft.

He commissioned the design from BYD and is financing the build of the first boat with a view to making it a full production yacht. The finished boat will be priced at around €2.5million ex tax.

Tia Simo, lead designer of the Eegle 20m, who studied naval architecture at Southampton University, told MBY : “We share the same idea as the client.

“We have to push to create yachts which are environmentally friendly. If we take care of our seas, we will be able to enjoy it in the future.”

7 Jet-Powered Yachts That Bring Speed and Performance to the Water

From a 27-foot runabout to a 165-foot superyacht, these boats show the benefits of jet power: instant acceleration and an impressive top end, not to mention turn-on-a-dime maneuverability., kevin koenig, kevin koenig's most recent stories, azimut’s new 72-foot yacht has one of the largest flybridges in its class. we hopped onboard..

Jet power delivers instant acceleration, a strong top end and good maneuverability.

Jet-propelled boats come in all shapes and sizes, carrying several advantages over more traditionally powered vessels. The propulsion units operate much like that of a personal watercraft, pairing an inboard engine to a jet pump that sends a powerful stream of water through the rear to propel and steer the vessel.

Enviable acceleration, instant maneuverability and strong top ends are the pros of jet drives. The prop-less design also benefits vessels navigating in waters with sand bars, rocky bottoms or crab pots that stop boats with propellers.

While not particularly fuel-efficient, the beauty of this specialized, niche propulsion is that it can be scaled to work on everything from jet skis to sportfishing machines to superyachts. Typically, jets appeal to owners who crave performance and perhaps the bragging rights of owning a jet-powered boat.

Our 7 favorites, from the Yamaha 27SDX to the 165-foot Mangusta REV, show the versatility of the jet drive.

Sanlorenzo SP110

best 20m motor yacht

Despite sleeping up to eight guests, the Sanlorenzo SP110 has, as its superpower, the ability to convert into a massive dayboat. As such, it has exceptional exterior space, including a long, empty cockpit and bow lounge forward. Both can be filled with guests on sunpads. With 6,000 total horsepower pushing its jet drives, the SP110 can hit a top speed of 40 knots and cruise at 32. This yacht is widely admired for its innovative interior. The 110-footer has a split-level upper and lower salon, both located at the after end of the boat, with unfettered ocean views. One of the beauties of jet drives mated with a hull design like the SP110 is that running on just one engine at low speeds results in exceptional fuel efficiency.

Mangusta 165 REV

best 20m motor yacht

There are very few yachts in the world that will turn heads like this beautiful, massive Mangusta. The 165-footer’s exceptionally low profile was inspired by sportscars of the 1930s, but its ridiculously powerful engines are definitely 2023. The 165 REV has four 2,600-horsepower Roll-Royce engines paired to Kongsberg-Kamewa waterjets. That propulsion package delivers a top end of 34 knots, which is extremely fast for a yacht this large. The 165’s interior includes four staterooms, large salon ahd full galley, but the exterior gives off a beachy vibe—most notably at the stern. The beach club, which is part of the opening transom, ends with a large, telescoping ladder that leads directly into the water.

Spencer Yachts ‘Wall Hanger’

best 20m motor yacht

The jet-powered 63-foot Wall Hanger from North Carolina-based Spencer Yachts is a true rarity in the sportfishing world. The yacht’s cockpit looks like most pelagic-centered convertibles, with a fighting chair, mezzanine seating, and plenty of fishboxes and other dry stowage. But where Wall Hanger takes a left turn is in the engine compartment. The owner wanted the boat to have an under-four-foot draft to access the dock at his vacation home, so he opted for twin 1,700-horsepower Caterpillar engines matched to waterjets. The engines offer a top speed of 51 knots and a cruise of 40 knots—which make running to distant fishing canyons to hunt billfish easy work.

Seven Seas Hermes Speedster

best 20m motor yacht

From Greek builder Seven Seas comes one of the prettiest little boats you’re likely to see anywhere—the Hermes Speedster. The 22-footer has retro styling inspired by the Porsche 356 roadster, a precursor to the 911. That includes eye-grabbing touches like a rearview mirror, a convertible top, stainless analog gauges at the dash, and supple leathers throughout the interior. With its 170-horsepower Bombardier Rotax engine, the Speedster can hit 45 knots. But the compact size, combined with jet propulsion, also means the boat can spin on a dime. Fully equipped, the Hermes Speedster sells for about $250,000.

Hinckley Talaria 57

best 20m motor yacht

Few builders know more about jet boats than Hinckley. The Maine-based shipyard is world-famous for Down East vessels inspired by the working lobster boats that patrol the New England coastline—though Hinckley adds a lot more luxe and glam to its designs. Propless jet propulsion, Hinckley decided, would be the best power choice to ensure its Picnic Boats and Talaria could navigate Maine’s rocky coast. The flagship Talaria 57 above comes in both flybridge and coupe versions, boasting a top end of 40-plus knots and cruise speed of 35. With its two staterooms, the 57-footer makes for an excellent weekender.

AB 100 Superfast

best 20m motor yacht

Italian builder AB didn’t mince any words naming this 100-foot-long megayacht. With triple 2,600-horsepower MTUs, the AB can top out at a nearly unheard of 60 knots, or a blistering 69 mph. The boat is not just fast, but truly high performance, with excellent acceleration and a deep-V hull that slices rough seas with ease. The four-foot draft also means it can run in shallow harbors that would be inaccessible to other boats its size. This 100-footer has multiple layout options for  accommodations, while the rest of the interior is also customizable.

Yamaha 275SDX

best 20m motor yacht

This Yamaha flagship excels both on lakes and coastal waters. At its heart, the 275SDX is all about entertaining, which means it can be packed from the open stern to the open bow with guests. Mirroring lounges in the bow, twin lounge chairs at the transom, and more seating amidships make this a great boat for young families with friends in tow. Twin 225-horsepower engines offer not only quick acceleration but an impressive speed of 53 mph. Yamaha’s Drive Throttle control system also makes docking and maneuvering at slow speeds much easier. The system incorporates a toggle on the steering wheel that can move the boat forward or in reverse, without needing to ever let go of the wheel. This 27-footer is an example of how jet power has gone mainstream in the runabout market.

Why the Chargers traded Keenan Allen after a career-best year

Harry Douglas says despite recent player departures, Jim Harbaugh's run-heavy offense is a good thing for Justin Herbert. (1:13)

best 20m motor yacht

LOS ANGELES -- Keenan Allen planned to retire with the Los Angeles Chargers .

It's the only team the wide receiver had known for his first 11 seasons in the NFL. He was drafted in the third round by the Chargers in 2013 and was the team's longest-tenured player. It's why, following the conclusion of the 2023 season, Allen stood in one corner of the team's locker room with a confident smirk as reporters peppered him with questions about his future.

By that point, the Chargers were projected to be $27.5 million over the salary cap in 2024 and Allen was high on the potential cap casualty list, with a $34.7 million cap hit for this season.

But Allen was confident he would be in Los Angeles. He was eager to keep playing with the Chargers, despite being 32 years old and coming off the best season of his career on a 5-12 team that had just fired its head coach and general manager. Whoever the Chargers hired wouldn't change Allen's mind, he said then. He wanted to be in L.A.

"I don't want to go nowhere else," Allen said, telling reporters it would potentially mean retiring if the Chargers traded him to another team.

On Thursday, they did . Allen was sent to the Chicago Bears for a fourth-round pick (No. 110).

For coach Jim Harbaugh and general manager Joe Hortiz, the trade saves the Chargers $23.1 million. It marked the most notable and polarizing move of a franchise-altering offseason that will mark a new era for the Chargers, whose focus now turns to the NFL draft in April.

"What Keenan Allen has meant to the Chargers for more than a decade cannot adequately be expressed through mere words," team president John Spanos wrote in a statement. "Keenan's impact lives in the hearts of our fans, in the communities which he has served and amongst the countless teammates who have formed a brotherhood with him.

"There will only be one Keenan Allen, and we cannot thank him enough for the contributions he has made to our organization both on and off the field."

In February, at Hortiz's introductory news conference, he detailed his process for roster building; Hortiz emphasized not keeping players on the roster when they begin a decline while weighing a player's value against their salary. The latter appears to be why Allen will be playing elsewhere in 2024.

Because of Allen's contract, the Chargers didn't have much leverage, resulting in the team relinquishing perhaps the best receiver in franchise history for a fourth-round pick, drawing the ire of current Chargers players and fans.

Linebacker Daiyan Henley wrote, "Nah" on X and told a fan he was still "trying to convince myself first" that Allen's trade was true.

Tight end Donald Parham wrote on Instagram after the trade, "[We're] just playing musical chairs."

There were thousands of comments on the Chargers' social media accounts expressing heartbreak.

"Keenan deserved so much better. Who's got it better than us? Everyone else but us," one user wrote on the Chargers Instagram page .

For the past two seasons, the Chargers have trotted out Allen, wide receiver Mike Williams , tight end Gerald Everett and running back Austin Ekeler as a part of their offense that featured one of the better skill position groupings in the league.

Since quarterback Justin Herbert entered the NFL in 2020, he had relied heavily on that group; they were responsible for 57% of his passing yards, passing touchdowns and completions.

But that entire group is gone. Everett and Allen will play together in Chicago, Ekeler signed with the Washington Commanders and Williams is a free agent after being released by the Chargers this week.

Now, the Chargers are down to an inexperienced and unproven crop of skill position players.

Joshua Palmer , a third-round pick in the 2021 draft, had been the No. 3 receiver behind Williams and Allen. Last season, Palmer missed seven games with a knee injury and a concussion, but he had the most yards in a game in his career when he caught five catches for 133 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7.

The Chargers used the No. 21 pick in last year's draft on wide receiver Quentin Johnston with a plan for him to eventually be the team's top receiver. But Johnston had a rocky rookie season, marred by drops. While others in his class flourished, Johnston shuddered and didn't show signs of a player the Chargers may be confident in as the team's uncontested No. 1 or 2 option. The fact that Hortiz and Harbaugh didn't draft Johnston gives them even less reason to be committed to him.

When Harbaugh and Hortiz took these jobs, they talked about winning multiple championships, and trading or releasing talented players to keep the Chargers salary cap compliant would always be a convoluted requirement.

But in a division with players including wide receivers Davante Adams of the Las Vegas Raiders , Courtland Sutton of the Denver Broncos and tight end Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs, the Chargers' top targets are unproven players.

With Allen's departure, all signs point to the Chargers selecting a receiver with the No. 5 pick.

Draft analysts have lauded this class for its talented group of receivers; and with such a high pick, the Chargers could take one of the top players at the position. The conundrum for L.A. is that they have needs at almost every position but quarterback.

The Chargers have nine picks in the draft, and they could always opt to take a receiver, or multiple, later. But the franchise has had good luck with the No. 5 pick, selecting two of the best players in franchise history: linebacker Junior Seau (1990) and running back LaDainian Tomlinson (2001), both in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
