The 54.86m/180' motor yacht 'Sea Huntress' (ex. Sea Sedan) was built by Feadship in the Netherlands at their Aalsmeer shipyard. Her interior is styled by English designer design house Terence Disdale and she was completed in 1997. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Terence Disdale and she was last refitted in 2022.

Sea Huntress has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 14 guests in 6 suites. The supremely spacious full beam master suite incorporates its own study. She is also capable of carrying up to 14 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Sea Huntress is built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks. Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (3512 Di TA) 1,270hp engines, she comfortably cruises at 12 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 15 knots with a range of up to 5,500 nautical miles from her 100,000 litre fuel tanks at 12 knots. An on board stabilization system ensures comfort when underway. Her water tanks store around 24,000 Litres of fresh water. She was built to Lloyds Register ✠ 100A1 YACHT ✠ LMC classification society rules.

Motor yacht SEA HUNTRESS (Sea Sedan, Huntress, Huntress II), which is 54,86m (or 180 ft) in length, is a steel displacement superyacht as built and launched in 1997 by the highly acclaimed Dutch Feadship shipbuilding company. She is a magnificent and large luxury yacht which provides safe and sumptuous accommodation for up to 12 guests, in 5 cabins.

SEA HUNTRESS was designed and built for the purpose of safe and luxurious worldwide cruising. A solid superyacht, she has spacious social and living areas as well as specialised technology for longer voyages.

Terence Disdale designed her interiors that are simple and uncluttered and from inside you can gaze on panoramic views through several large windows. Her salon is inviting and full beam, with a bar and thoughtfully placed seating that allows guests to fully enjoy the views through the large windows. The dining area is adjoining. It boasts an exquisite bronze Mitoraj dining table, which in itself is quite the piece of art. A self-playing Grand Piano is also located here and adds even more charm to this already welcoming deck.

A curved staircase leads from the salon into a large square guest foyer where a coffee station is found tucked away behind a door. This area leads into the guest cabins as well as the Gym.

The Skylounge is a great place to relax, with a card table and comfortable seating. Casual lunches can be had on the bridge deck, where guests will find a BBQ.

The sun deck offers a bar with stools, perfect for the evening drink or aperitif under the sun. A Finnish Sauna, as well as raised Jacuzzi with ample sun pads, are found on either side.

Well maintained, SEA HUNTRESS saw an interior refurbishment in 2005, including new soft goods, furniture, carpet and the addition of a bar in her main salon, as well as state of the art home theatre system and electronics. 2013 refurbishment saw new teak decks.

SEA HUNTRESS has open outdoor focused living spaces, generous accommodations and excellent entertainment options. Her deck Spa Pool and water toy list complete an impressive package of features.

Luxury yacht SEA HUNTRESS has two powerful yet efficient caterpillar 3516 DI-TA diesel engines. Her maximum speed approaches 15 knots and she can cruise comfortably at 12 knots.

On the same day I took pictures of "Utopia", I found another Feadship docked at Bahia Mar... "Huntress". I was at Bahia Mar on this day to meet with fellow YachtForums member John B., aboard his Azimut. We went for a cruise later in the evening, but not before I took a few pictures of Huntress. My camera angle is off a little bit, as I was trying to maneuver the boat and take pictures without... taking out a piling. Built in 1997, she is 180 feet long and was refitted a couple of years ago at Derecktor Gunnell. She's powered by twin 1,280-hp Caterpillars.

Now, she's a very impressive yacht indeed. At the time of her launch she was one of the largest yachts launched by De Vries in terms of volume. She was referred to as the jumbo yacht. Very wide beam and of course the full beam main deck that provide lots of extra space. Today she's owned by a gentleman from California who a few years ago was appointed as US Ambassador to Spain by your President.

Huntress is here (again) I drove over the 17th Street Causeway and saw a large yacht on the south side of the bridge - driving around I was pleased to see Huntress docked. It was dusk and the exterior lights were on -- a beautiful sight. The dock was in a secure area, but I was able to walk along under the bridge and marina area to absorb the sight.

As far as I know, the first SEA SEDAN from Feadship was not launched as PRINCESS MAGNA... The predecessor to the first SEA SEDAN from Feadship was the Benetti SEA SEDAN II. She was subsequently renamed PRINCESS MAGNA when she was sold and today she is known as NUFER.

The Feadships Swedish owner took the Benetti in exchange and the names were swapped...

Hi, I was the build Chief Engineer and went round the world on the De Vries 55m boat now called Huntress. It was launched as Sea Sedan in May 1997( I opened the valves to flood the drydock with the Captain, One each). The previous Sea Sedan out of De Vries ( Hull 646 I think) was being built as Princess Magna, the Owners exchanged boats and money and the build was completed. She was launched as Sea Sedan. All the manuals etc still had the Princess Magna logo on the covers. I only had the briefest involvement with the smaller one. I think it did briefly carry another name atfer it was sold by the Sea Sedan Owner. I will check with some of the old gang and post back when I can find out. From these photos it's evident that the front window wall on the main deck has sharply radiused corners. With flatter center section. Which is contrast to the more evenly curved window walls we see today. Where there many Feadships in this style? Kelly Cook

Hi, AMG, I know the guy who was the build Captain ,and the build Engineer when the Princess Magna first started at De Vries. I also know the Captain who took it over when it changed hands and it became Sea Sedan. This took place in Aalsmeer. This was the same Captain who was on the one that is now Huntress.

OK, you may be right on the hand-over, but first time I saw the Feadship Princess Magna was in southern France, not in the Netherlands...

Hi, Since my first post on this matter today I have spoken to the ex Chief Officer of the smaller Sea Sedan Feadship. He confirms that it was launched and left the De Vries yard as Sea Sedan.

Moscow - Russian Rivers and Waterways Port of Call

Moscow is a wonderful city to visit, and travelers on river ship cruise tours to or from St. Petersburg spend a few days in Moscow . This capital city of Russia was our last port on a river cruise tour, and we had about four days to see most of the highlights. Our first day we did an overview driving tour and rode the subway under the Mockba (Moscow) River to Red Square. The next day we toured the State Armory and the Kremlin.

These photos show some of the other highlights you can see with three or four days in Moscow .

The Northern River Terminal is located on the Moscow Canal in the northwest section of Moscow at the Khimki Reservoir.

Most river cruise ships sailing between Moscow and St. Petersburg use the ship as a hotel while in Moscow. Because of traffic, it's often a long drive into the city, but the sights along the way are interesting, and you only have to unpack once for the river cruise.

Sparrow Hills is the best place to get a great panoramic view of Moscow. The Sparrow Hills overlook the Mockba River and are near Moscow State University.

Novodevichy Convent in Moscow

Novodevichy Convent in Moscow was founded in 1524, and was once used as a sort of prison for the unwanted wives and sisters of the Tsars. Peter the Great sent both his first wife and his sister to Novodevichy. Since the convent had such famous nuns, it was very wealthy due to the many donations of the Tsars and their families. At one time in the 1700s, the cloister had over 36,000 serfs working in 36 villages. Novodevichy was ravaged by the French armies in 1812, but the brave nuns saved the buildings by disarming the fuses set to blow them up. The Soviets wanted to make the convent into a museum in the early 1920s, but it was again saved.

Novodevichy also has a cemetery with the graves of many famous Russians, including Nikita Khrushchev, Anton Chekhov, Raisa Gorbachev, and Yuri Nikulin.

The Mockba (Moscow) River runs into the Volga via the 79.5 mile long Moscow Canal.

River ships sailing between Moscow and St. Petersburg on the Baltic Waterways embark and disembark at the Northern River Terminal about an hour's drive from the city. The drive time can vary significantly in length because of the heavy Moscow traffic. The river looks peaceful here, as it winds around the cosmopolitan area of Moscow.

The Cathedral of Christ the Redeemer, also known as the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, is the largest church in Russia, holding 10,000 worshipers.

The original Cathedral of Christ the Savior was built over 44 years to celebrate the 1812 victory over Napoleon. It was completed in 1883. Stalin had the church destroyed in 1931, but it was rebuilt using mostly private funds in 1999. The new church is a replica of the original. Note that it took 44 years the first time and only 4 years the second to complete the church! Isn't modern technology impressive.

One interesting tidbit is that it took three attempts to blow up the church in 1931. Stalin planned to build a huge Palace of the Soviets on the cleared land, but engineers determined that the land was too boggy. In the 60 years intervening, the space was used for a variety of things, including a year-round swimming pool!

The panoramic view of Moscow from Sparrow Hills is a stopover for most tour groups, so we were not surprised to see a large number of vendors. The ski jump was a surprise, but Moscow gets very cold in winter, so winter sports are very popular. This ski jump is near Moscow State University and has a great view of the city. Seeing this ski jump reminded me of the famous Holmenkollen Ski Jump in Oslo, which also has a great view of that northern capital city.

This small band greeted us at the Central Museum of Armed Forces in Moscow. They played a variety of band music and made us all feel very welcome.

Grand Triumphal Arch Celebrates the Victory Over Napoleon in the War of 1812

This arch looks a little like the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and it is located near the Victory Park Metro Station in Moscow.

This Grand Triumphal Arch is decorated with the coats of arms from the 48 Russian provinces. To celebrate the victory over France in the war of 1812, it also includes bas-reliefs of the "Expulsion of the French." The arch was originally built in 1834, but has only been on this site since 1968.

It is a little ironic that this arch resembles the Paris Arc de Triomphe , which Napoleon built between 1806 and 1836 to celebrate his French victories.

The Metro in Moscow is one of its shining industrial achievements. Construction on the Metro was begun in 1931 and continues today. The system has over 165 stations and 155 miles of track. Over 9300 trains, traveling sometimes as fast as 56 mph, navigate the huge system each day. Almost 10 million people ride the Moscow Metro every day, which is more than the New York and London systems combined. We found the Metro to be very efficient, with trains arriving every few minutes.

Navigating the Metro system can be somewhat of a problem for non-Russian speaking riders. Most of the signage is in Cyrillic only, and the stations are quite large. Trying to find the correct exit while walking long distances underground can be challenging.

On our cruise tour, we rode the Metro as a group with our program director from near Victory Park under the Mockba River to Red Square. Several of the group ventured out on their own during our time in Moscow, and many rode the Metro. They all returned with stories of getting lost underground, but none seemed the worse for the experience, and they all loved telling the tales.

This 18 meter centrifuge is the world's largest. The centrifuge weighs over 30000 tons, and the maximum load is 30 G, but most tests are run at 3 or 4 G.

A centrifuge ride is the first test for a cosmonaut, whose entire training school takes from five to eight years. The centrifuge can simulate the extreme force of gravity that cosmonauts (and astronauts) face when going into space. A centrifuge training session lasts about 30 minutes, and the trainee experiences both the centrifugal force as well as the spin of the pod he/she is riding in. Just typing this makes me a little queasy!

Just like in the USA, everyone who visits the Star City cosmonaut training center near Moscow wants to know how cosmonauts "go to the bathroom". They have more sophisticated equipment today, but this contraption from the early space flights is fairly self explanatory.

SCUBA diving underwater is very similar to the weightless experience the cosmonauts experience when working in outer space.

A highlight of our day in Star City was a visit with Yuri Onufrienko , a Russian cosmonaut who spent extended time in space at the Mir space station in 1996 and the International Space Station in 2001-2002. Yuri patiently took many questions from our small inquisitive group.

After 16 days of discovery, learning, and fun, we had a farewell dinner with the six Program Directors - Evgeny, Olga, Vladimir, Svetlana, Violetta, and Marina - in Moscow.

The Kremlin is a triangular, walled citadel in the center of Moscow. The Kremlin is considered by most to be the heart of the city. First conceived in the 12th century, the Kremlin (which means fortress) was expanded by Tsar Ivan III (Ivan the Great) during the 15th century. His architects designed the magnificent Cathedral of the Assumption and the Faceted Palace, and the Kremlin was an interesting mix of both Russian and Renaissance styles. During the Soviet time of the 1930s, many of the Kremlin buildings were destroyed or vandalized, and the complex remained closed to the public until 1955.

Today the Kremlin is home to the Russian President and his administration. Many buildings are open to the public, but you may need to be with a guide (check in advance).

The Kremlin was also one of the 21 finalists for the New Seven Wonders of the World.  

Red Square in Moscow, Russia

Red Square's name has nothing to do with Communism or Soviet Russia. The old Russian word for "beautiful" and "red" was the same; the square was supposed to be called "Beautiful Square". Red Square has been the center of Moscow activity since the 16th century when the Tsar cleared the area and allowed vendors, shoppers, and businesses to fill the square. Today this square is surrounded by the Moscow Kremlin, the State Historical Museum, GUM Shopping Mall , and St. Basil's Cathedral .

Many of the important events of the last three hundred years in Russia have been marked by parades or demonstrations in Red Square. Anyone who enters Red Square will have memories from TV or movie reels of this magnificent public square. Those of us who grew up during the Cold War era can remember the parades of soldiers, tanks, and other armaments past Lenin's Tomb just outside the Kremlin Wall. The World War II generation remembers Red Square as the site of a huge victory celebration at the end of the war.

Rubymar ship attacked by Houthi rebels finally sinks in Red Sea

US military warns of environmental and transport risks after sinking of UK-owned cargo ship that was hit as part of militants’ campaign over war in Gaza

A UK-owned ship attacked by Yemeni Houthis has sunk in the Red Sea after days of taking on water, the first vessel to be fully destroyed as part of the rebels’ campaign over Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.

The sinking of the Rubymar comes as shipping through the crucial waterway for cargo and energy shipments moving from Asia and the Middle East to Europe has been affected by the Houthi attacks.

Many ships have turned away from the route. The sinking of the Rubymar could lead to further detours and higher insurance rates put on vessels plying the waterway – potentially driving up global inflation and affecting aid shipments to the region.

The US military published an image of the sinking vessel and said it now posed a risk to the environment and shipping. “The approximately 21,000 metric tons of ammonium phosphate sulfate fertilizer that the vessel was carrying presents an environmental risk in the Red Sea. As the ship sinks it also presents a subsurface impact risk to other ships transiting the busy shipping lanes of the waterway,” it said on Sunday.

Ian Ralby, founder of maritime security firm IR Consilium, said part of the environmental dangers lay in the Red Sea’s circular water patterns. It operates essentially as a giant lagoon, with water moving northward, toward the Suez canal in Egypt, during winter and outward to the Gulf of Aden in summer.

“What spills in the Red Sea, stays in the Red Sea,” said Ralby. “There are many ways it can be harmed.”

The Belize-flagged, Lebanese-operated Rubymar had been drifting northward after being attacked on 18 February in the Bab el-Mandeb strait, a crucial waterway linking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

Yemen’s internationally recognised government, as well as a regional military official, confirmed the ship had sunk. The official spoke on condition of anonymity as no authorisation was given to speak to journalists about the incident.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations centre, which watches over Middle East waterways, separately acknowledged the Rubymar’s sinking on Saturday afternoon.

The Beirut-based manager of the Rubymar could not be immediately reached for comment.

Yemen’s exiled government, which has been backed by a Saudi-led coalition since 2015, said the Rubymar sank late on Friday in stormy weather over the Red Sea. The vessel had been abandoned for 12 days after the attack, although plans had been made to try to tow it to a safe port.

The Iran-backed Houthis, who claimed the ship sank almost immediately after the attack, did not acknowledge the ship’s sinking.

The US military’s Central Command had previously said the vessel’s cargo of fertiliser, as well as fuel leaking from the ship, could cause ecological damage to the Red Sea.

Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, the new prime minister of Yemen’s government, called the ship’s sinking “an unprecedented environmental disaster”.

“It’s a new disaster for our country and our people,” he wrote on X. “Every day, we pay for the Houthi militia’s adventures, which were not stopped at plunging Yemen into the coup disaster and war.”

Since November, the rebels have repeatedly targeted ships in the Red Sea and surrounding waters in protest against Israeli attacks in Gaza. Those vessels have included at least one with cargo bound for Iran, the Houthis’ main benefactor, and an aid ship bound for Houthi-controlled territory.

Despite more than a month of US-led airstrikes, Houthi rebels remain capable of launching significant attacks. That includes the attack on the Rubymar and the downing of a US drone worth tens of millions of dollars.

The Houthis insist their attacks, which have enraged the wider Arab world, will continue until Israel stops its combat operations in Gaza.

However, in recent days, there has been a slowdown in attacks. The reason for that remains unclear.

Why is Moscow called ‘the port of five seas’?

Moscow has many nicknames : ‘A City on Seven Hills’; ‘The Third Rome’; ‘White-Stoned’; and most surprisingly, ‘The Port of the Five Seas’. Geography, however, won’t help in explaining how this is possible. If you look on a map, you’ll see that Moscow’s location is not even close to any sea. The nearest is the Gulf of Finland (which flows into the Baltic Sea) and where St. Petersburg is located. But that’s about 600 kilometers from Moscow.  

How did this nickname originate?

As usual the answer lies in history, though not so distant in the past. The first to call Moscow ‘a port of five seas’ was Joseph Stalin, and the matter was connected with the country’s rapid industrialisation.

Huge ‘communist constructions’ were arranged throughout the Soviet Union. The most ambitious were canals. The most infamous project was the White Sea-Baltic Canal built by prisoners in record time, costing the lives of thousands of prisoners.

At the same time, Stalin arranged a huge plan for rebuilding Moscow. The city had to be modernized to be a suitable and impressive capital for the new ambitious and progressive Soviet nation. Moscow in the late 1920s, however, still looked quite provincial. For several centuries during the Imperial era it had become a second-rate city, since most development and progress was focused in the Tsar’s capital St. Petersburg.

Stalin began construction on a metro system, built new thoroughfares and highways, and even made the streets broader (in some cases even the buildings were moved !). Without any hesitation Stalin ordered to get rid of anything that could interrupt a new highway or prospect.

Many structures connected to the old regime were demolished, including dozens of old churches and monasteries, as well as the Kitay-Gorod Wall, a 16th century fortification in the city center, just one kilometer from the Kremlin.

To supply a rapidly developing Moscow with a large amount of drinking and industrial water, and to make it accessible to shipping, Stalin ordered the building of a canal that connected the relatively small Moskva River with the Volga River. (Peter the Great first thought of this ambitious idea back in the 18th century, but never realized it).

The 128 kilometers waterway was built by Gulag prisoners from 1932 to 1937. First it was called the ‘Moskva-Volga canal’, but in 1947 it was renamed the ‘Moscow Canal’. The famous phrase – Moscow is now ‘a port of five seas’ – was pronounced by Stalin in 1937 at the canal opening ceremony. 

Which seas does it connect with? 

The White Sea and the Baltic Sea were connected by a canal, and the Baltic Sea was connected with the Volga River by a system of canals and rivers. The building of Moskva-Volga canal made it possible to reach the White Sea and the Baltic Sea by sailing from Moscow.

The third sea is the Caspian, into which the Volga flows. Later, in the 1950s, another huge canal appeared - a 101 km waterway between the Volga and the Don rivers was built in Volgograd. This canal gave access from the Volga to the Sea of Azov - and subsequently to the Black Sea.

After all those big Soviet construction projects were completed, it was possible to reach the five seas without ever leaving one’s ship: the White, Baltic, Caspian and Black Sea, as well as the Sea of Azov.

The Barents Sea, with the South-Eastern side touching the Sea of Japan encompasses the major ports in Russia.

60% of the total cargo movement on the international scale for Russia takes place through the sea. This includes almost 722 million MT (2016) cargo movement through international vessel calls.

A staggering 67 thousand plus ship calls come through this busy network every year. However, the modern handling facilities ensure that the median handling time for these ships remains 1.45 days. This means the port facilities under the Russian Government’s reach are the best in the business!

As a shipping nation, the Russian seafarers are plenty in number across the globe. The country’s shipping strength boasts over 2820 vessel registrations and 98,000 seafarers under them.

Major Ports Of Russia

In this article, we review the major ports in Russia of inland and international importance. We highlight their share in building the 571 496 million current US$ shipping market in the country. The details also contain their accurate location, identity code, and other geographical information.

1. Port of Novorossiysk (Krasnodar Krai, Russia)

UN/Locode: RUNVS Latitude: 44.720065° Longitude: 37.81373°

The port of Novorossiysk has a 3.4 sq. km harbour area with a land area worth 2.7 sq. km. This includes a total of 89 functioning berths for vessels of all sizes. It features as the biggest seagoing port for Russia for over decades with almost 50% higher turnover.

The establishment of the port of Novorossiysk dates back to 1829, with major exchanges since 1846. The port’s range of services recorded 143 million MT of cargo handling for 2020. It includes one of the first Timber wood handling facilities to feature across the Black Sea ports.

Cargo Handling

A total of 11 berths are important in handling timber and other bulk cargo. 4 separate berths over a quay length of 570 meters handle the container operations. The sheer size of the facility allows maximum handling limits of 208 million MT every year.

Network and Layout

The timber operations across the 4 berths (31, 32, 31/A, 31/5) are the most advanced facility across Europe. Their throughput every year crosses figures between 400 thousand to 600 thousand.

This connects with direct railway and loading facilities, reaching out to 70% of timber industries. Meanwhile, 180 thousand and more TEU capacity of container handling adds to the port’s large-scale profits.

2. Port of Saint Petersburg (St. Petersburg, Russia)

The Port of Saint Petersburg has one of the deepest drafts for any Russian facility. The inner anchorage ranges between 23 to 25 meters while the channel draft is approx. 18.5 to 23 meters.

As one of the major ports in Russia, its water area spreads over an expanse of 164 sq. km. Meanwhile, the beginning of its establishment dates back to 1869. At present, the facility uses 470 vessels for in-house operations along their coast.

The passenger terminal at St. Petersburg handles over 450 vessels annually. This happens over a dozen of berths, with 2 major terminals having the alongside the extent of 360 meters.

The total mooring size capacity of this facility is over 30 kilometres. This includes the working capacity of more than 200 berths of various sizes in this facility.

St. Petersburg famously works with 8 major cranes of Panamax capacity. This couples with 3 RMG and 20 gantry nature cranes for handling container goods. This rounds off to the port’s annual handling figures to well over 2 million every year.

The facility connects with major cargo shipping destinations through 2 dozen operating lines. It acts as the major gateway for providing shipping access to the Russian interiors. The neighbouring ports like Rotterdam, Bremerhaven, etc. act as the feeder terminals for the super container ships .

Over 122 tugs and 3 dozen oil barges are resident for berthing and bunkering operations. The rail line operates through the container segment of the port, handling container transport.

3. Port of Ust-Luga (Kingiseppsky District, Russia)

UN/Locode: RUULU Latitude: 59.68294° Longitude: 28.329515°

The port of Ust-Luga stands only behind Novorossiysk in terms of cargo handling volume for 2020. It has the biggest handling facility for coal bulk operations in the Northern part of Russia. The additional expansion plans provide this facility with a total area of 30 sq. km.

Ust-Luga has 5 major berths that operate for round the year operation in severe temperatures. These handle over 30 vessels at once with anchorage facilities over 20 meters and higher depth.

The state-of-art coal loading facilities handle export abilities up to 20 million MT annually. It also is one of the newest facilities in Russia, dating back to 2011 for its establishment.

The loading conveyors for the coal handle up to 500 MT every hour on average. This facility accommodates vessels ranging up to 60,000MT of DWT for coal loading.

In addition, Ust-Luga also handles livestock, liquid, and general cargo operations. The overall cargo operations have figures worth 102.6 million MT for 2020. 2 mega cranes of 104 MT capacity and 1 of 80 MT capacity operate simultaneously with the conveyor system.

The berthing network contains a ramp bridge terminal and 7 deep berths spread across 1500 meters. Their operations handle 1000 to 1450 vessels up to 1,20,000 MT DWT.

The layout also has a warehouse for final goods handling, spread over 2800 sq. meters. This facility connects with the Ust-Luga railway terminal that has a special station for the port. The plan is for expanding the facility for over 26 train arrivals every day in the next decade.

4. Port of Vostochny (Nakhodka Bay, Russia)

UN/Locode: RUVYP Latitude: 42.762495° Longitude: 133.0514°

The port of Vostochny operates with two major terminals for a handling capacity of 80 million MT. In 2020, the facility shows stats worth 77 million MT including the export. In the internodal structure, the coal loading takes place at the special coal terminal.

The facility is amongst the oldest in the major ports in Russia, dating back to 1974. The trans-Siberian railway connects the terminal to the most prominent end-user plants. Vostochny’s major exports connect with the Asian countries, with Japan and Korea using up to 60%.

Over 550 vessel arrivals for the year 2019 have mostly bulk carriers of different sizes. The facility accommodates vessels up to 1,80,000 MT DWT for bulk coal operations.

The general handling facilities show 300,000 units of rail cars carrying the cargo for this period. The discharge to these rails uses the conveyor mechanism with automatic operations.

The Vostochny terminal employs over 1700 people for the cargo and operational routines. The spreading layout uses 98% of mechanical and electrical automation for operations.

With the progressive development of their phase 3, the handling capacities will touch over 100 million MT. As a result, the net income of the facility amounts to an annual figure of 125 million USD.

5. Port of Primorsk (Vyborgsky District, Russia)

UN/Locode: RUPRI Latitude: 60.3463° Longitude: 28.67096°

The Port of Primorsk is spread across a land piece of 5.4 sq. km area for cargo operation. This is in addition to the 32 sq. km of water limits within their expanse. It features amongst the top Russian ports by volume, handling 50 million MT+ cargo annually.

The initial operations at the facility date back to the year 2001, with a further increase in 2004. The facility operates 6 major berths that spread across a length of 2.8 km alongside. The deepest tanker-handling terminals allow drafts up to 17.8 meters for convenient loading.

An annual handling capacity of 60 million MT and more of liquid cargo allows major export relations. The Primorsk port also stands out as the highest contributor to oil exports in Russia.

The operations include 50 major oil extraction firms for direct loading transfers. All loading arms connect for a throughput of 2800 cubic meters loading rate for bigger tankers. This allows tankers of 1,50,000 DWT capacity to arrive with better draft features.

The wide oil handling range connects with the Baltic Pipeline and serves at its one end. This comes with a specific terminal for gas loading operations that operates 8-24hrs for cargo.

The 2 phases of pipeline extending onwards span over 1000 kilometres for oil handling. These terminals involve 250 regular employees with camera surveillance measures.

6. Port of Murmansk (Kola Bay, Russia)

UN/Locode: RUMMK Latitude: 68.984125° Longitude: 33.061°

With its location on the northern end of the Arctic circle, Murmansk is the coldest Russian port. It also is the largest to lie on the North of this geography. It is also the geographical North-most amongst the major ports in Russia.

The port helps to house the ice-breaking vessels assisting the larger vessels passing through the Arctic. Its establishment owing to this reason is also quite old, dating back to 1917.

The port operates through its 15 berths, 11 of which are for solid cargo. These berths divide into 2 major port districts or nodes for operation. The general berths operate over 1.5 km in length, while the oil terminals operate on half the figure.

In 2021, Murmansk has figures worth 56 million MT of cargo through its facility. All major bulk cargo operations take place through the gantries at a steady rate. The operates to switch between 16 and 32 MT per hour operation capacity for these.

Meanwhile, the bulk liquid berths vary between 10 to 15 meters in depth. The 3 terminals that use the roadways facility operate the majority of bulk operations.

Despite its challenging location, Murmansk operates round the year. Its expanse has an additional third node for car and container handling tasks. It is the only node with length restrictions, with vessels coming up to 220 meters long.

Major bulk cargo storage facility houses more than 25000 MT in this area. The facility houses over 200 operators for cargo, and less than 100 for ice-breaking requirements.

7. Port of Vladivostok (Vladivostok, Russia)

UN/Locode: RUVVO Latitude: 43.087445° Longitude: 131.9022°

The port of Vladivostok provides Russia with an opportunity to explore the Pacific. It extends towards the south-eastern end and touches the Sea of Japan for the bulk Asian traffic. This facility spreads across 55 hectares and also provides a cultural significance for the Russian landmass.

Vladivostok has a record of handling 24 million MT of cargo for 2021. It is significantly higher than its 13.9 million MT average across the decade. The port’s establishment starts in the 1800s, with free status existence in between.

The terminal operates through its range of 15 berths for general operations. Each of these varies between 10 to 15 meters for depth. The approach through the channel gives a depth of up to 25 meters.

A collection of 200 automatic and semi-automatic loading resources are available overall. This includes the STS, RMG, and RTG facilities operating alongside. The container handling facilities operate round the year for efficient discharging.

Being the south-eastern tip, the Vladivostok network has major relation with Asian ports. 45% and more of their trade flow through Korea, Japan, and China in combination. The layout divides into the universal and the container-specific terminals for operation.

An area of 450,000 sq. meters is available for the warehouse storage and handling of goods. The inter-port handling facilities feature a train map and 2 major truck checkpoints.

Russian Shipping Riches

The sea transport shares a stake worth 112 087 million current USD for the Russian trade. This creates a significant impact for managing international trade, despite the large land area. The concentration of land does not have too big inland waterways, leading to major ocean ports.

Moreover, the testing conditions while operating in the Arctic do not make the cargo movement easier. In such situations, the Russian authorities focus highly on developing the ice-breaking fleet for year-long operations.

With a diverse portfolio, the major ports in Russia handle cargo of every significant use. The country’s latest focus on developing a green corridor is in line with the shipping requirement and future.

Sunken Ship Carried Fertilizer That Threatens Red Sea, U.S. Says

A British-owned cargo ship sank in the Red Sea about two weeks after being damaged in a missile attack by the Iran-backed Houthi militia, and the fertilizer it was carrying now posed an environmental risk, the United States military said late Saturday.

The assault last month on the vessel , the Rubymar, involved two antiship ballistic missiles launched from Yemen. The sinking appeared to be the first since the Houthis began targeting ships in an effort to put pressure on Israel to end its military siege in Gaza.

The U.S. military’s Central Command confirmed the Rubymar’s sinking in a statement on social media. It said the ship sank early Saturday while carrying a load of 21,000 metric tons of ammonium phosphate sulfate fertilizer that now presented “an environmental risk in the Red Sea.”

The ship also poses a “subsurface impact risk” to other ships moving through the area, a busy international shipping lane, the Central Command said.

The Rubymar was an “environmental disaster” even before sinking because the attack created an 18-mile oil slick, Central Command warned last month . It said that the disaster could worsen if the fertilizer were to spill into the sea.

No other details about the sinking, or the risks it posed to the environment or to commercial shipping, were immediately available on Sunday morning. The Rubymar sailed with a Belize flag. The ship’s operator, Blue Fleet Group, based in Greece, did not respond to an inquiry.

After the attack last month, the Rubymar’s 24 crew members were taken to Djibouti by a vessel operated by a French shipping company. Djibouti port officials said at the time that the crew members were from Syria, Egypt, India and the Philippines.

Houthi attack kills three sailors in group’s first fatal strike on shipping

Houthi-claimed missile attack on Greek-operated, Barbados-flagged commercial ship kills three sailors off the coast of Yemen.

At least three seafarers have been killed in a Houthi missile attack on a merchant ship in the Gulf of Aden, the United States military said, marking the first fatalities reported since the Iran-aligned Yemeni group began attacks against shipping in one of the world’s busiest sea lanes over Israel’s war on Gaza.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack on Wednesday, which set the Liberian-owned, Barbados-flagged ship True Confidence ablaze approximately 50 nautical miles (93km) off the coast of Yemen’s port of Aden.

Two aerial photos released by the US military showed the ship’s bridge and cargo on board ablaze.

“These reckless attacks by the Houthis have disrupted global trade and taken the lives of international seafarers simply doing their jobs, which are some of the hardest jobs in the world, and the ones relied on by the global public for sustainment of supply chains,” Central Command said.

Earlier on Wednesday, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency said the vessel was no longer under the command of the crew and they had abandoned it.

Brigadier General Yahya Saree, a Houthi military spokesman, claimed the attack in a prerecorded message, saying its missile fire set the vessel ablaze.

He said the rebels’ attacks would only stop when the “siege on the Palestinian people in Gaza is lifted”.

After the missile hit, the crew abandoned the ship and deployed lifeboats. A US warship and the Indian navy were on the scene, trying to assist in rescue efforts, according to The Associated Press news agency. It was unclear how many crew members were on board at the time, it said.

The United Nations called on the Houthis “to cease all attacks against international shipping in the Red Sea,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said, expressing serious concern about the continuing attacks, including the latest incident where the status of the crew is unknown.

Dujarric said the attacks are causing risks “to property, to life, to ecology in the area”.

Houthi fighters in Yemen have repeatedly launched drones and missiles against international commercial shipping since mid-November, saying they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians and in opposition to Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip.

The Houthi attacks have disrupted global shipping, forcing firms to reroute to longer and more expensive journeys around southern Africa.

The True Confidence is owned by the Liberian-registered company True Confidence Shipping and operated by the Greece-based Third January Maritime, both firms said in their joint statement. They said the ship had no link to the US.

However, it had previously been owned by Oaktree Capital Management, a Los Angeles-based fund that finances vessels in instalments.

Despite more than a month and a half of US-led air raids on the Houthis, the group has remained capable of launching significant attacks.

Those attacks have included last month’s attack on a cargo ship carrying fertiliser, the Rubymar , which sank on Saturday after drifting for several days, and the downing of a US drone worth tens of millions of dollars.

A Houthi assault on Tuesday apparently targeted the USS Carney, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer that has been involved in the US campaign against the rebels.

The attack on the Carney involved bomb-carrying drones and one antitank ballistic missile, the US military’s Central Command said.

The US later launched an air raid destroying three antiship missiles and three bomb-carrying drone boats, Central Command said.

Saree, the Houthi military spokesperson, acknowledged the attack but said its forces targeted two US warships, without elaborating.

The Houthis “will not stop until the aggression is stopped and the siege on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip is lifted”, Saree said.

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive,very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Ship sunk by Houthis likely responsible for damaging 3 telecommunications cables under Red Sea

The U.S. assesses that three sea cables under the Red Sea damaged last week were likely severed by the anchor of a ship as it was sinking after an attack by the Houthis. 

"Those cables were cut mostly by an anchor dragging from the Rubymar as she sank," White House national security communications adviser John Kirby told CBS News national security correspondent David Martin in an interview Wednesday. 

The U.K.-owned commercial ship Rubymar sank Saturday morning after taking on water when it was hit by a Houthi missile on Feb. 18. As it was sinking, its anchor likely severed three of the cables that provide global telecommunications and internet data internationally. 

Telecommunications firm HGC Global Communications said last week in a statement that the incident "had a significant impact on communication networks in the Middle East," and it was rerouting affected traffic while also utilizing the other Red Sea cables that were still intact. 

The Houthis have been attacking commercial ships since November to protest the war in Gaza, but the Rubymar is the first ship that has sunk after being attacked. 

In addition to posing a hazard to underwater cables, the Rubymar also presents an "environmental risk in the Red Sea," according to U.S. Central Command, because of the 21,000 metric tons of fertilizer it had on board. 

The U.S. has conducted near-daily airstrikes against the Houthis for almost two months to destroy the Houthis' capabilities, and yet, the Houthis have continued to keep up their attacks. 

A Houthi attack Wednesday killed at least three members of the crew on the Liberian-owned commercial ship True Confidence, according to defense officials, marking the first fatalities from one of the Houthi attacks since they started stepping up the pace in November.

9 people dead and 78 others hospitalized after eating sea turtle meat on Zanzibar’s Pemba Island

ZANZIBAR, Tanzania (AP) — Eight children and an adult died after eating sea turtle meat on Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago and 78 other people were hospitalized, authorities said Saturday.

Sea turtle meat is considered a delicacy by Zanzibar’s people even though it periodically results in deaths from chelonitoxism, a type of food poisoning.

The adult who died late Friday was the mother of one of the children who succumbed earlier, said the Mkoani District medical officer, Dr. Haji Bakari. He said the turtle meat was consumed Tuesday.

Bakari told The Associated Press that laboratory tests had confirmed all the victims had eaten sea turtle meat.

Authorities in Zanzibar, which is a semi-autonomous region of the East African nation of Tanzania, sent a disaster management team led by Hamza Hassan Juma, who urged people to avoid consuming sea turtles.

In November 2021, seven people, including a 3-year-old, died on Pemba after eating turtle meat while three others were hospitalized.
