Catarafts | Inflatable Boats for Alaska River Trips

The term "cataraft" is a combination of the words "catamaran" (meaning twin-hulled) and "raft". So a cataraft is a twin-hulled raft. The origins of the catamaran design are as old as rafting itself. Stories abound about early home-made fiberglass cats that were used to raft rivers in Russia during the Cold War era. Since those days, however, significant strides have been made in the design and performance of these boats.

Small Catarafts

Designed primarily for single-person use, the small catarafts (boats 12' and under) are usually constructed of a single tube on each side, with a tube diameter of between 16" and 18". The original intended market for these boats was for fishermen needing a small rig for fishing small lakes and streams. But these boats are commonly seen on larger rivers in Alaska and are even used for multi-day expedition-type floats in remote locations.

In recent years, several  twin-tube  small cats have appeared in the market (by "twin tubes", we mean boats that use a pair of tubes on each, for a total of four tubes). These have greater lift, but are still too small for activities like float hunting, because of their reduced capacity.

Single-Tube Catarafts

Most of the commercially available cats are single-tube boats (one tube per side). These are the lightest of the conventional cats, and are ideal for situations where portaging may be a necessity. This is because each tube is relatively light and can be backpacked long distances if the occasion demands. For example, one tube from an 18' AIRE Leopard cataraft weighs about 53 pounds.

Big Load-Haulers

For float hunting or expedition trips involving large gear or personnel loads, there are a handful of boats on the market that offer superior lift in shallow water. All of them are twin-tube boats.

AIRE Cougar

The Cougar is constructed of twin 18" tubes on each side. These are the smallest diameter tubes in the big cat market, and their low profile gives the boat great performance in heavy headwinds, which tend to push larger boats around on the water. The low tube diameter punches through headwinds with relative ease, while the fact that all four tubes are equal in size makes component replacement much simpler.

AIRE Super Leopard

The Super Leopard, available only by special order, consists of a large outer tube and a smaller inner sponson. This gives the boat tremendous lift while offering the opportunity of creating a drop floor that sits inside the boat (as opposed to the Cougar, which creates a totally flat floor).

AIRE Lion 16

The AIRE Lion series boats are specifically designed for hauling large loads. The tubes are fatter than any of the other production boats AIRE makes, and the blunt bow transition puts more boat in the water, which generates more lift.

AIRE Lion 18

The Lion 18 carries the highest AIRE-rated load capacity of any of their boats, but it's also the heaviest of their cats. The blunt bow can be problematic with some outboard types, however they have been operated commercially with larger outboards successfully.

Catarafts versus Round Boats

Boaters asking whether a cataraft is superior to a round boat (or vice-versa) are usually asking the wrong question. The boats are designed for different things. An important saying to remember is to "let the river choose the boat". That is, consider the river you intend to float and the loads you plan to carry before committing to a particular style of inflatable. Some rivers lend themselves very well to smaller round boats, while others are ideal for large catarafts with outboards. Here are some considerations:

Catarafts take much longer to set up than do round boats, owing to the complexity of the frames typically used. This is not a factor to weekend floaters who trailer their catarafts, however it could be an issue for those who are hauling the parts in a car trunk or in the back of a pickup. Plan on an hour or two to set up a cataraft. Not such an issue on remote trips, where watches are put away and time starts to lose its meaning.

Power Catarafts

Although catarafts were first designed by whitewater boat jockeys for running the heavy foam, they've found a special niche in Alaska. With the proper rigging, they work very well with an outboard clamped to the transom.

Mid-Sized Power Cat Applications

The mid-range of power cats falls in the 12-horse to 40-horse range, These are boats designed for the ocean or for running upstream on a river system. These boats require a "water shield" of some kind or the operator will be soaked by the converging wake between the tubes, which forms a rooster-tail about 1/3 of the way forward of the transom.

If you spent any time researching whitewater craft , you’re bound to come across the catamaran-raft hybrids known as catarafts. These unique looking craft utilize two separate inflatable pontoons connected with a metal frame – which also provides area for seating and storage.

The design differs significantly from traditional self-bailing rafts, and offer several distinct advantages in terms of maneuverability, big water performance, and load-carrying capacity. They’re also generally more forgiving than rafts for beginners and those learning how to row in whitewater.

Why a cataraft?

As quality whitewater inflatable craft aren’t cheap, you’ll want to consider a few things carefully before making a decision. For most people, the choice will come down to either a traditional raft or a cataraft.

Both have their relative strengths and weaknesses, so consider how you plan to use your raft for the most part, and what makes the most sense for your environment.

Catarafts generally offer superior maneuverability than rafts, making them nimble and easier to turn on dime. They’re also very forgiving, making them ideal for beginners – and good boats to learn how to row whitewater with. As far as cargo space goes, a fully decked out cataraft will hold more than a raft of equivalent length. A 14-foot cat with decks added to the front and rear can hold more than a 14-foot raft, although you’ll need to be more judicious in how you pack them to avoid unbalancing the craft.

Cataraft tubes are wider and sit higher in the water that rafts, so they can straddle over rocks and other obstacles that would slow down most rafts. This also means they’ll catch the wind a little more than rafts. If you’re interested in mounting an outboard motor, catarafts will be easier to do this with than most rafts.

On the negative side, catarafts don’t have as much passenger space as rafts, and are harder to move around in. They also don’t come standard with any flooring, so anything you drop inside them is likely lost for good – although you can install aftermarket flooring in them to prevent this.

Rafts offer a good mix of maneuverability, weight capacity, and passenger space. As they sit lower in the water, weight distribution is less of an issue, and they won’t catch the wind to the same degree.

Beyond having significantly more room for passengers to sit on the perimeter tubes and thwarts, rafts allow you to move around freely inside them. They also can either be paddled or rowed, whereas cats can only be rowed . They’re also more kid-friendly than catarafts.

Rafts also have several downsides. They have more surface area in contact with the water, which makes them less maneuverable. How to pick the right cataraft

Catarafts differ substantially in terms of carrying capacity, performance, and maneuverability. They also aren’t cheap – they’re made from some of the most durable materials on planet, and need to withstand the rough and tumble environment of whitewater rivers.

There are three main material types used in most rafts and catarafts: PVC, Urethane, and Hypalon.

Urethane is slick and slips nicely over rocks. It’s highly durable, lightweight, and makes an excellent material for most rafts. It’s more expensive than PVC, and is fairly difficult to actually repair in the field.

PVC is the least expensive material, and depending on the manufacturer, can be prone to damage. They tend to be mass produced, so if you’re going to go with PVC, you’ll want to make sure it’s a trusted name brand.

Hypalon has a long lifespan, is highly abrasion and puncture resistant, and is easier to roll up than PVC. It’s fairly expensive, and may go by a variety of different names depending on the manufacturer. NRS, for example, calls their proprietary Hypalon fabric ‘Pennel Orca’.

There are also many hybrid materials where manufacturer’s combine several materials together to offer a superior mixture of durability, light weight, and performance over rocks.

Tube Dimensions

Cataraft tube dimensions are another important factor to consider when making a decision. Tube length and diameter determine how large of a frame can be mounted to them, and also how much carrying capacity they’ll have.

Longer, wider cataraft tubes displace more water allowing you load more people and gear onto them. These tubes are typically found on touring, expedition and fishing watercraft , where a heavier load capacity is a necessity.

Shorter, narrow tubes don’t offer the same level of carrying capacity, but are light and highly maneuverable in the water. These are typically found on whitewater focused craft.

Similar to surfboards and skis’, rocker refers to the curved portion between the cataraft front (called the kick) and the flat area below. The more rocker a craft has, the more maneuverable it will be, but a large rocker will also decrease stability – as less surface area will come in contact with the water.

Less rocker will increase stability and place you closer to the water, but won’t be as nimble or maneuverable in whitewater.

How you plan to use your cataraft will have a major impact on your decision-making process. If you plan on doing multi-day fishing or hunting trips with multiple passengers, you’ll need a larger, more stable craft than if you’re only planning on day outings. These craft are typically 14 – 16 feet long and up, and feature wide diameter tubes for loading down with heavy gear.

Catarafts geared more towards whitewater playboating typically feature aggressive rockers, less carrying capacity, and enough room for 1-2 rowers only. Many of these craft are in the 12 to 13-foot length range.

As catarafts are highly versatile, they often be rigged using different sized frames with a number of different add-ons and accessories depending on your preferences. This gives you a good amount of flexibility when it comes to setting up your cat.

Generally speaking, you’ll need to purchase the aluminum frame separately when picking out a cataraft. Most only come with the tubes – meaning you’ll need a frame to complete the craft.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.

This drink is the perfect example of simplicity at its finest. Lime juice, ginger beer, and a shot of vodka are the three main ingredients for an ideal drink during the holidays, a hot summer’s day, or or really whenever you want to have a good time!

Throughout the years this drink has seen multiple variations enjoyed by many.

In this post, we’re going to show you the best way to prepare and enjoy a Raspberry Moscow Mule, which is a creative twist on the classic Mule cocktail.

Raspberries take this drink to another level, adding tart and tangy tones with a delicious texture. The bright pop of color adds to the festive nature of this drink.

We've come across a few recipes for the Raspberry Moscow Mule. We've taken into consideration the variations, techniques, and twists different recipes have to offer, found what works best, and formulated the best Raspberry Moscow Mule recipe for your enjoyment!

Ingredients:

• Fresh (or frozen) raspberries
• Fresh limes
• Ginger beer

Instructions:

1. Raspberries are the key component of this recipe. Depending on the consistency you prefer, you may end up with a smooth raspberry purée, a chunky raspberry sauce or a raspberry syrup. Each of these options is described below.

Raspberry Purée

Put a handful of fresh raspberries into your blender or food processor with a splash of lime juice. Blend until the fruit has broken down. Be careful not to blend too thinly where the seeds are small enough to slip through the holes of a strainer.

Place a strainer over a container and pour the raspberry and lime mixture into the strainer. Use the back of a spoon to press chunkier bits of the purée through.

Chunky Raspberry Sauce

This option is for those of you who enjoy the added texture from the pulp of the fruit. Drop a handful of fresh raspberries and freshly squeezed lime juice into a cup and then muddle the mash together until you reach your desired consistency.

Unless you want a mouth full of seeds, we recommend you use a strainer in this method as well.

Raspberry Syrup

Fresh and frozen raspberries can be used for this one. Frozen raspberries must be thawed properly before cooking.

Place a handful of raspberries and a dash of freshly squeezed lime juice into a saucepan on low to medium heat. Cook for 10 minutes or until the fruit breaks down while stirring frequently.

Be cautious, because cooking on high heat may cause the berries to burn. Add water as desired if you think the syrup is too thick.

Remove from heat and strain.

Refrigerate.

Note: Allowing the syrup to sit and cool will cause it to thicken slightly.

2. Now that you have your fruit blend, it's time to add the vodka. Add a shot (or two) of your favorite vodka to the raspberry and lime mixture and stir. Better yet, if you have a cocktail shaker make use of it by combining the ingredients in the shaker. Give it a few robust shakes like the skilled bartender we know you are!

3. Lastly, top off your drink with a bit of ginger beer to give it that fiery kick and bubbly fizz. Stir gently.

Now you have yourself a spicy and fruity cocktail with a distinct tartness that is sure to awaken your taste buds.

When it comes to garnishing your cocktail imagination is the limit.

• Stick a lemon or a lime wheel on the rim of your serving mug or glass. The yellow or green will contrast beautifully with the red drink, especially if you are serving your cocktail in traditional copper mugs.
• If you have a few leftover raspberries, make a fruit skewer by pushing a toothpick through two or three juicy raspberries. Balance the toothpick on the rim of the cup or simply prop it gently on the side. This garnish doubles as a quick snack.
• A bonus of using frozen fruit is that you can use a few leftover raspberries as a fruity alternative to ice cubes. Drop a couple of frozen raspberries into your drink to keep the temperature colder for longer.
• Herbs have been a classic way to garnish cocktails and the Raspberry Moscow Mule is no exception. You can use fresh sprigs of thyme, basil or mint. To fully enjoy the benefits these herbs offer, make sure to place the herbs in the palm of your hand and give them a swift clap to release their fragrances.
• Gently place your herb garnish on top of your drink.

Moscow Mules of any variety are best served in authentic copper mugs. However, fear not if you don't have the famous copper mugs that Moscow Mules are traditionally served in. Although there is something to be said about the aesthetic value of that rich copper hue, this drink is just as tasty served over ice in any available cup or glass you may have on hand.

Substitutes and Additions

Raspberry Moscow Mule Mocktail

Creating a Raspberry Moscow Mule Mocktail is as simple as eliminating the vodka. That's it! Skip the second step of the recipe and you have a drink just as delightful without the alcohol.

Do note, however, that while most commercially sold ginger beers are non-alcoholic, there are a few brands that have an average of 4.8% ABV (alcohol by volume). Some brands carry a whopping 8.7% ABV! Check the label before you buy it.

Sweetness vs Tartness

It's clear that the tart flavor of raspberries is what gives this variation of the Moscow Mule its uniqueness.

Sometimes achieving that delicate balance between sweetness and tartness can be a bit more difficult than you expect. Raspberries picked at their peak stage of ripeness are the sweetest.

If you find that the tartness of the raspberries is a bit overpowering, you can balance the flavors by adding a touch of simple syrup. If you do not have the store-bought version, it's easy to make. Add 1 part water to 1 part white sugar in a saucepan and simmer on low to medium heat.

Let cool and add as desired.

Ginger Beer vs Ginger Ale

These are two distinct products with different tastes. When it comes to making a Moscow Mule, ginger ale is not a substitute for ginger beer . Ginger beer, though carbonated, is usually fermented which produces a sharper ginger taste.

Ginger ale, on the other hand, is simply carbonated water with more delicate ginger notes. When ginger ale is added to a Moscow Mule the taste is overwhelmed by the other ingredients. The result: another drink entirely.

Ginger beer gives the Moscow Mule the spicy ginger zing and bubbles it is recognized for.

In addition to ginger beer, we suggest adding seltzer or sparkling water to the mix for more of that crisp and refreshing fizz.
