- BG’s “sails” at recent IOM World Championships: 1st 2007; 1st & 2nd 2009, and 1st, 2nd, & 3rd 2011.
- BG’s Britpop: 1st, 2nd, & 3rd 2011 IOM World Championship. (These were the only prototypes in existence at the time – an unprecedented IOM clean sweep.)
- BG’s personal finishes at recent IOM World Championships: 1st 2007, 2nd 2009, and 2nd 2011 (where it was decided on the exciting last race, which he went into on equal points. This excellent video takes you there .
- Since 2003 BG has personally never finished out of the top 6 in IOM International events, so he has been at the top level for a while.
- The rigs appear very similar. Did you establish a static rake for those boats too?
- The location of the sail winch in front of the mast accessed by a hatch and general sheeting configuration is the same.
- All have Dave Creed designed/manufactured foils and bulbs.
- When you set the travel on your RMG sailwinch what angle is the limit for main and jib booms?
- How much rudder throw do you recommend? Is this something where the more skilled get away with more throw because they know how to limit the use of this brake.
- Do you use exponential on your rudder? For me it is very helpful, but I’ve tested a few boats that had more than I prefer.
- How heavy are your jib counterbalances. What is the dock test to know jib counterbalance is correct?
- Do you recommend Travel Adjust for the mainsheet with the RMG?

Achieve Your Potential in Competition IOM Sailing
Vickers RC Sailing
Producer of the V11 Competition International One Metre Design by Ian Vickers.
Our workshop opened in 2014 with the V8 IOM. Since then we have produced hundreds of hand crafted IOM yachts in the Vickers design range. Yachts that have helped IOM competitors around the world achieve their potential and exceed expectations in competition.
We are currently offering the V11, the innovative design that finished 3rd at the 2019 World Championships in Port Alegre, Brazil.
When our clients return, they know they are tapping in to smart, competitive technology in IOM design and build. Stiff, Lightweight boats, that are Easily Assembled, Fast and Forgiving to sail. Join the fun!
Improve your results at the club and the regatta, with the fast and forgiving V11 from Vickers RC Sailing
Set Up and Sail
The V11 detailing is simple but effective. In conjunction with the V11 Set Up Guide, assembly is straight forward, and vital tuning information assists you to quickly understand and master your V11's potential
Vickers RC Sailing build processes are well refined and thought out.
Our boats are light, stiff and clever, keeping to a simple and effective philosophy around detailing
The V11 design is a hull, foils and bulb package to compliment the full range of conditions experienced in RC Sailing. The hull design has full volume forward and features the familiar chines and tumblehome of the modern IOM for reduced weight and windage, as well as good tracking characteristics. The V11 features our peaked style foredeck for efficient water shedding when buried downwind and a geometrically strong shape for the forestay and mast ram areas.
Foils are slippery and strategically positioned with the rig to balance the yacht. The V11s forgiving balance through the wind range, allows the skipper to focus on the race at hand, and not rely on micro steering to maintain a consistent VMG.
The rig sits solid on its deck stepped mast step, complimented at deck level with an encapsulating mast gate arrangement over the mast ram. The rudder tube is rigidly supported inside the moulded servo tray.
Hull construction is from E-Glass Fibreglass Cloth and High Grade Epoxy Resin.
The foils are Carbon Fibre Layup with High Grade Epoxy Resin.
Paint system is a 2 pot Urethane and the boat is thoroughly post cured before finishing.
The V11 Features-
Plastic main hatch access.
Ready to accept RMG Winch and Standard sized Rudder Servo
Bow Bumper attached.
Hardware is Bantock including an adjustable mast ram, adjustable mainsheet post and tiller arm.
All necessary fittings attached for standing and running rigging.
The V11 comes out of our workshop in Beach Haven, Auckland New Zealand and is ready to accept rigs and electrics.
We also make sails that can be added to the order, or ordered separately.
So hit the enquiry button to discuss delivery times and options.
We are ready to help.
Essential to success in sailing comes down to the Rig and how it is set up and tuned. The V11 comes with a Set Up Guide that covers all the expert information needed to set up like the guns. It specifies the hardware, construction and tuning information to get your rig and sails set up and sailing near optimum straight off the bat, so you can enjoy your racing and punch above your weight.
Include Sets of sails from Vickers RC Sailing and enhance the experience.
Vickers Rc Sailing is back taking orders again for the V11
We look forward to hearing from you

New Parts kit for IOM rig builders
With the popularity of our rig kitsets we have made some changers to help keep up with demand. The kit is now a parts kit, this has two benifits with the first allowing us to reduce cost and the second making them faster to turnaround. The main difference is that we have left all the assembly to the builder reducing our labour costs. The kit still has the mast and prebend done with kicker attached, it now also includes the 120D boom fitting to attached to foredeck.
A great weekend at the South Island Camps with a 1st and 3rd for RNB sails and rigs,

North Harbour Champs
A great weekend of racing at Gulf Harbour over the weekend with a nice NE breeze running down the lake creating close racing. RNB sails and Rigs performed very well with Rob battling hard against Ian all weekend and just coming up short for the win taking a well earned second. Steve Champion also using RNB rigs and sails had one of his best regatta's coming 5th, not far back from those in 3rd and 4th. Well done to the Gulf Harbour club for putting on a very well run weekend.
Latest Update
Well 2022 flew past and we are now into the new year.
There has been lots of good success with our sails through the DF65, DF 95 and IOM fleets, and the IOM rig packages have become very popular amongest the fleet
We have new product coming online over the next few weeks which include lightweight jib booms, clip on spreaders, ballrace vangs and pre-made sidestays
We are pleased to announce the release of our new No1 IOM jib which was in the development last year and has proven to be very good. It has a bit more into the aero package to reduce drag and allow the boat to climb upwind without the loss of speed giving g a better VMG. We have also made a small change to the main by doing a similar thing up top to also reduce drag and keep the boat driving forward in the breeze Our workshop in November also proved popular with the next one in April. This already looking full with only two spots left. If interested in this let us know and we can get you in.
November Workshop 2022
A great few days at our workshop was had by those who attended. The course was run over two days where skippers had good sessions on starting and how to get off the line well along with rig tuning and tactics which proved to be of high interest. We are currently working on our next course which is being run in Taupo from the afternoon of April 17th, through to lunchtime on the 19th. This will allow good travel time for those attending. Places are filling up fast with only 10 spots, if interested get your name on the list. sales@robnelsonboats.nz

Auckland Metre Monthly Report
Congratulations and well done to Rob Nelson and his new Britpop, winning the April Metre Monthly at Wattle Farm from Ian Vickers and Phil Pryde. The day started very soft, with a swirling 2-3 knot breeze that would go right around the compass during a race, but then settled (thankfully) into a steady 5-6 knot Sou-Westerly down the pond for the afternoon. With 24 boats turning up we decided to have 2 observers per race (getting Avg Pts), which put the starting fleet at 22 boats…the starts were chaotic, as was the first mark!
NEW COLOURS
We are now able to offer Gray and Green into the range of colour options for sails and well as deck patches.
New Products Coming
After alot of enquiries asking for parts and other products we are in the process of updating the shop. We are now carrying all sailsetc parts we use to build our rigs and other products we use and recommend for RC sailing.
Metre Monthly
Well done Graham Roberts using our sails, in his win at the metre monthly against some strong competition.
Florida DF65
A great Result in the Florida DF65 Travelers Series with Bruce Farr having his best regatta to date, coming second using his newly built sails built by RNB. Report is that he had good speed and was able to sail out of some tough spots when buried deep in the pack. Great to have Bruce on the team and his input has been very valuable in our development.
2020 DF65 Nationals
Graham Roberts continues his run at the front of the NZ radio sailing fleet, by winning the DF65 Nationals with our just released 65 sails. Becoming the first NZ National Champion in the class. Well done Graham and we look forward to seeing you continue to do well.
BEST ISLAND NELSON 2020
Another win for Graham Roberts and RNB sails over the weekend at the Best Island 2020, held in Nelson.

Send your your lockdown projects to sales@robnelsonboats.nz and go into the draw to win a new set of IOM or DF65 sails Draw will be the day we come out of lockdown
Well we are in week 3 of lock down. Some interesting projects going on with Barry in Keri Keri turning his boat into a land yacht . The new woody has been completed with its rig now fitted and ready to go once we are allowed back out,On the sailmaking side we have been building up stock levels for IOM's and are in the middle of doing our soon to be released DF65 sails, which come in two options with or without seams.Well look after yourselves and we will see you in the new world
Another VTNZ run by the team at Tauranga went well with boats from Wellington Radio sailing, Westhaven Radio sailing in attendance, along with a good local fleet. The lake turned on for the day and Graham Roberts (OOD) was able to get a good course laid with a nice long beat to the top mark and good run down the lake. The breeze started off well up the range of the number 1 rig. After 3 races it increased and number 2 rigs became the order of the day. Some great sailing was had with fast downwind runs making or breaking your chances of a good race. Chasing the gusts was a must. Mid afternoon the breeze drop out and a quick change back to number 1 rigs to finish the day, A big thanks must go to VTNZ Tauranga for lots of prizes being shared out to all the sailors and supporters.
2020 Auckland Anniversary Day
Well done to Peter Jacobsen for his win at the recent Auckland Anniversary Day using his RNB sails. This is Pete's first regatta win since starting RC yachting only a couple of years ago. He sailed a very consistent day finishing high up the order in pretty much every race to finish the day 15 points clear after 12 races. It is pleasing to see more skippers using RNB sails having success.
Merry Christmas for 2019
Its been a great year at RNB with our sails performing well, and good reports coming in from you all. On the development front our latest sail shapes are working very well and no changes are in the pipeline at this point. We are very happy with the performance and results from early in the year but felt we could be stronger at the top end of the No1 rig, so a small change to the main leech exit was needed and this has improved the performance, and now we are strong in this condition without affecting the performance through the rest of the range. As some of you know i have been out of action over the past six weeks with back surgery and recovering well. The boat is sitting on the shelf and will be back on the water early January to blow off the dust, both skipper and boat. We are closing for a break form the 24th December through to the 6th January, email us your orders or go through the website and we will get onto them as soon as we are back. Hope you all have a good break with family and friends and we look forward to catching up with you all in the new year
2019 Murray Rountree
Day One was a light day in Otaki for the Murray Rountree Very tricky conditions with a off shore breeze and plenty of Holes on the race track. The two RNB sailors Rob and Graham got of to good starts and took a commanding lead by the end of the day.
Day Two The wind was in when we arrived at the lake, but due to it swinging around time was taken to try and get a fair course in for all skippers At midday a rain squall came in and the rush was on to change down to No2 rigs only for another rapid rig change back to No1 as the squall past quickly. The race committee managed to get through another 10 races which saw tight match racing between Rob and Graham with Rob getting the upper hand to close out the contest A big thanks to the Volunteers for running the event in trying conditions, in tough conditions
2019 Tauranga Championships
What a great weekend at the Tauranga Championships held over the weekend. It was good to see so many designs and brands represented throughout the fleet. The inclusion of the pre-generation boats proved to be a good idea, it was also very pleasing to see the number of Woody's sailing.
Plenty of home-built boats in the fleet, proving the class is still in a good place and not entirely dominated by the commercial builders. With a home-built boat finishing fourth and others doing well throughout the weekend. RNB sailors Graham Roberts and Rob Nelson had a great battle all weekend with Graham Cross keeping them honest. At the end they were tried on points and a count back required to split the two, giving a well earned win to Graham.
2019 Canterbury Champs
Well done to John McPherson who place 3rd at the recent Canterbury Champs. After working with John on his set up its pleasing to see him getting some good results
2019 Tauranga 5 Hour
A great day at the Tauranga 5 hour race, with breeze at the top end of No1 rigs. The Team from RNB (Garry, Bernd & Rob) took a great win with a lead of 3 laps at the end of the 5 hours. Also Carl and Tessa also running with RNB sails came in for a nice second overall. A big thanks must go out to the club for running a very good day with lunches supplied and a great atmosphere, all competitors really enjoyed the day.
2019 WRS Winter Cup
A light westerly provided good racing in today's Winter Cup. Congratulations to Rob Nelson for winning todays event with a close battle for 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
2019 Commodores Cup WRS
2019 WRS Commodores Cup was won by Rob Nelson with Grant Nixon second and Steve Champion third. See results table for details. The event was very well run by Chris and his team of helpers and included catered lunches and a dinner at Billfish Cafe . Thanks also to the many sponsors: Billfish Cafe and Bar, New World Marton, Corrosion X, North Sails, Emirates Team New Zealand, RNB, Vision Screenprint.
Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta
Although the conditions were trying a great day of racing at Westhaven Radio Sailing was had by all. A strong fleet of boats tuned up and 11 races were sailed in light to top end of No1 rig. Rob came out on top with a very consistent day to win with 12 points by the end of play. Our sails once again proved themselves to be working very well in the puffy conditions
Wooden IOM Boat Contest
A great event was held at Westhaven Radio Sailing for Wooden IOM's . The forecast was not looking good with heavy rain and 40 knots predicted. Lucky the forecasters were a bit off and we ended up sailing in No2 rigs with a few light showers. Conditions on the course were tricky with a confused sea state left over from the heavy weather the night before. 18 races were complete over the day and Rob Nelson came out on top using RNB sails. Looking forward to next years event
2018 BOP 5 Hour Race
Rob Nelson & Garry Roberts A good day resulted in a 1st overall at the recent BOP 5 Hour, finishing with 100 laps and a lead of just over a full lap to the next boat .
2018 Murray Rountree Wellington
Well done to Carl Smith at the recent Murray Rountree for a creditable 4th place overall using his RNB sails
Sailing at Westhaven 26 May
RNB has been busy developing new shapes and these have been performing very well with a good win at the Keri Keri Club Championships over the weekend of the 21st & 22nd April. The sails are proving to be very good running downwind, along with holding their shape very well in the top of the rig range.

Make it a bit more open in light wind. B rig likes a bit of twist. C rig the jib is too big so you need to use less twist in the main to balance the boat. If the main backwinds, you are not using enough twist in the jib, which should be open more at the top at all times. Match the main to that.

Conversely, an overbuilt or rigged boat may give excellent reliability, but struggle to match better rigged setups on Performance, often through a bulky item not performing as required or an overall rig weight problem. Performance This is where trade off's versus Reliability need careful consideration.
