Traditional looks combined with modern features draw frequent compliments for the Niagara 35, which was designed by Mark Ellis and built from 1978 to 1990 by Hinterhoeller Yachts in St. Catherines, Ontario.

Under way, the boat is stable and stiff, and we’ve had the rail of our Niagara 35, Phantasia II, in the water only once, when beating down Lake Huron in 20 knots of wind. On that same trip we hooted and hollered downwind at over 8 knots on a day on which virtually no one else was out. While the boat tracks and maneuvers well, sail trim and the right sail combinations really make or break progress upwind or in light air.

A sudden encounter with a rock in poorly charted Georgian Bay assured us that Hinterhoeller built a tough boat. No water came in, and the only visible damage was mangled lead on the leading edge of the keel.

Below the waterline, a semibalanced spade rudder complements a longish rather than deep keel that’s massively faired into the hull with a substantial sump. The hull is semicored and needs to be monitored, but Niagara 35s aren’t known to have blister problems.

On deck, a short bowsprit extends the foretriangle and supports double anchor rollers. Later models came rigged with an inner forestay on the large and secure foredeck, and many older ones have been similarly retrofitted, once duly reinforced. The keel-stepped, single-spreader rig is staunchly supported with double lowers, and the chainplates tie into accessible interior knees heavily bonded to the hull. Jibs can be sheeted to an aluminum toerail on the bulwark or to an inner track on the wide side decks. On older boats, the balsa-cored decks should be checked for water saturation around fittings.

The cockpit seats have high backs for comfort and are long enough for stretching out; beneath are deep lockers. A drained and vented propane locker aft holds two 20-pound tanks. A bridge-deck keeps the companionway secure.

The interior of our Niagara 35 was one of two configurations. It’s an unusual but intelligent design for extended coastal cruising for a couple.

The companionway leads to the aft cabin, which has a smallish double berth to port and a quarter berth to starboard with a stand-up nav station on top of a large dresser at its head.

Doors lead from the aft cabin to the head and to the galley. Another door opens to the head from the saloon, which is largely forward of the mast. Sitting in the saloon with these doors open, you have a view of the entire length of the boat, which–with over 6 feet of headroom and lit by four fixed windows, four opening ports, and four hatches–has a sense of openness that belies its size. When fitted with lee cloths, the saloon settees either side of the drop-leaf table make excellent sea berths.

A hanging locker to starboard and drawers and lockers to port separate the saloon from the forward cabin, which on our boat is given over to sail stowage, bins, lockers, and a workbench complete with vise. A deep chain box low in the bow can be divided for chain and rode.

The engine, behind the companionway stairs, is more accessible than on many boats this size.

Some Niagara 35s have had lavish upgrades, which can be reflected in their prices, but early boats in basic condition are listed as low as $50,000. Prices for the later Encore version, which has a conventional V-berth forward, tend to be higher.

Niagara Yachts History

George Hinterhoeller, famed boat-builder built the Niagara 35s from 1978-1995, with close to 300 boats having been built in that time.  Mark Ellis did the design work for the boat, and she is as elegant as she is functional.

Born in Austria, George Hinterhoeller immigrated to Canada in 1952.  After working on his own initially, later merging with several Canadian-based builders for about 10 years, he refounded his own company in 1976.  Beyond the popular Niagara 27 & 35 models, he found success with building the Nonsuch cat boat line, along with many other vessels, including multiple powerboats. 

Accommodations & Layout

The Niagara 35 Encore offers excellent ventilation & natural light throughout the cabin via the large overhead hatches (with screens), and through the many opening ports aboard.  Crafted in traditional George Hinterhoeller fashion, her interior is constructed with lots of teak and fine joinery work, and the cabin sole is teak and holly. 

Staring below in the bow aboard Halcyon , the master cabin is forward with a large berth to port and a seat to starboard.  Seat area can be converted into additional berth space as desired.  Lots of lockers and drawers are found throughout.  There is a private door to access the head directly from the forward cabin.

Head is on the port side aft if the master cabin, and has a separate shower stall with good storage space.  There is a second entry door from the salon as well.  Vanity features a stainless steel sink with hot & cold pressurized water.   Manual head has a Y-valve to a 25 gallon holding tank, or directly overboard when offshore.

Stepping aft brings you to into the main salon.  There are comfortable settees on either side with storage behind and below.  The fixed mounted table sits in between, and the leaf can be raised when more table space is needed.  On the starboard bulkhead forward, there is a Force 10 propane cabin heater as well.

Moving further aft brings you into the large U-shaped galley to port.  It offers lots of countertop space and ample storage throughout.  A portion of the galley hinges forward affording incredible access to the engine.  Opposite to starboard is the forward facing navigation station and quarter berth.  The design of the vessel is such that it allows for sleeping for up to five comfortably.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

The first NIAGARA 35 was shown at the 1978 Toronto International Boat Show. About half of the 260 hulls built at the St. Catharines Ont. plant went to the U.S. The original interior has 2 quarterberths in a cabin just inside the companionway. The head and galley separate it from the main saloon which extends forward of the mast with the forepeak left as storage. In 1984, a second interior (The Encore) was in introduced. This featured a large double berth forward, separated from the main saloon by a head and shower. A u-shaped galley is located to port next to the companionway, with a quarterberth and nav station to starboard. A Volvo 21-hp diesel was the standard auxiliary. Later, this was changed to a three-cylinder Volvo, or four-cylinder Westerbeke. The bowsprit was extended in 1985.

Niagara 31/35

A club racer and an offshore cruiser from hinterhoeller--each by a different designer--have above-average construction and both sail well..

Occasionally we hear from a sufficient number of owners requesting a Practical Sailor report on their boat that we cannot forever resist their supplications. A check of the files revealed that we already had a good deal of information on the Niagara 31 & 35. And when we asked current owners for their input, the response was considerable. In fact, we have enough paper to write separate reports, but because these two boats were built during the same approximate years, and represent interesting contrasts, we decided to combine the two in one article.

Hinterhoeller Yachts was founded by George Hinterhoeller in 1977, after he left C&C Yachts, the company he helped start during the previous decade. George’s career in boatbuilding is long and interesting, beginning first in Canada with his highly successful Shark, a lightning fast 24-footer. The story of C&C aside, Hinterhoeller Yachts built two distinctive lines—the Niagara and the Nonsuch, the latter with unstayed masts and wishbone booms. The company was placed in receivership in 1989 and purchased by Strategic Associates Inc. in 1990, which in 1993 consolidated production with C&C. When a 1994 fire destroyed part of the C&C plant, Hinterhoeller moved back to its former facilities. It closed the doors again in November 1995 and currently is out of business, which is too bad, because owners had nothing but good things to say about Hinterhoel-ler’s customer service.

George’s son, Richard Hinterhoeller, a partner in the company, told us:

“The business plan was to operate a shop with two production lines. The two models were to be a 30′ club racer/cruiser and a 35′ bluewater cruising boat. Both were to be sensible, timeless models. George had been impressed by the Aurora 40 from Mark Ellis and contracted him to design the Niagara 35. For the smaller boat, George sat on his C&C 30 and made a list of the 10 items which would take an already great boat and make it better. In his typical down-to-earth fashion, George added up the necessary lengths of berths, head, cockpit and galley, and ended up with a target length of 31 feet.”

The Designs

Best known for his big race boats, Argentinean designer German Frers drew the lines of the Niagara 31. The 35, as noted, was drawn by Mark Ellis, who also designed the Nonsuch line, and more recently, the Northeast 37 motorsailer. The 35 came first, in 1978, and about 300 were built before its run came to an end in 1995. The Niagara 31 was built between 1980 and 1984. A less popular 26-footer also was built, as well as a 42.

Based on their specifications, the 31 is the more lithe of the two, with a displacement to length (D/L) ratio of 266 and a very generous sail area to displacement (SA/D) ratio of 18.9. The 35 is definitely more of a cruiser with a D/L of 329 and a SA/D of 16.47.

This distinction is also evident in their underbodies, where the 31 has a much smaller fin keel than the 35’s long “cruising fin.” The 31 has a large spade rudder that rises to meet the counter, and there is a partial skeg. The 35, interestingly, has no skeg for its balanced rudder. Years ago, we asked Mark Ellis why. He shrugged and said something about better handling. While most cruisers look to at least a skeg

to support and protect the rudder and perhaps to increase the lateral plane for directional stability, years later we found it interesting that Steve Dashew (Deerfoot and Sundeer lines of performance cruisers) prefers the spade rudder for heavy weather handling. So, there is no right answer on the issue of rudder protection vs. handling, but in a full-blown cruising boat, we’d still opt for support and protection.

Then again, despite numerous passages to the Caribbean and South Pacific, the Niagara 35 is not really a round-the-world type—among other things, it’s considered too small by many of today’s bluewater sailors.

Both the 31 & 35 are described as having somewhat veed hull shapes, which was a characteristic of IOR designs during the late 70s and early 80s; while it increases wetted surface area, it should be more seakindly than a more modern flat bottom boat.

Nevertheless, several owners described their 31s as having “flat bottoms” that don’t “cut the waves” and tend to pound a bit.

Construction

Hinterhoeller Yachts, like C&C, liked to use balsa coring for its light weight and rigidity. Both the Niagara 31 and 35 have it in the hull and deck. Unidirectional rovings were used and all structural bulkheads were bonded to the hull. Ballast is external lead bolted to a reinforced sump. Berth faces were molded but there was much wood used, including teak sole and a teak inlay in the 35’s molded overhead. Hardware quality was good, using, for example, Barient (later Lewmar) winches, Navtec rod rigging, Atkins & Hoyle hatches and, in the words of one 35 owner, “massive chocks and cleats.”

Owners generally rate construction as excellent, often citing Hinterhoeller’s reputation as a prime reason for buying. We received a few comments about gelcoat cracking and leaks around portlights and chainplates, with its attendant saturation of the balsa coring, but this is to be expected with any fiberglass boat. We had no complaints about the hull/deck joint, print-through or anything structural. One owner did say that the mast “rests on stringers made of built-up plywood laminates,” which he watches with a careful eye, though no problems have occurred. Another 31 owner complained of wild mast pumping, but we cannot imagine that condition being typical—something else is awry.

Accommodations

The 35 was introduced with an innovative interior dubbed the “Classic,” in which the forepeak is devoted to stowage (workbench, shelves, seat and lockers), the settees and cabin table are somewhat farther forward than normal, and the head and owners stateroom (with a double and single berth) are aft.

Many owners said the uniqueness of this layout was a factor in their purchase. Later, the more conventional “Encore” layout provided an offset double berth forward, with a quarter berth and U-shaped galley aft. Both seem popular with their owners, for different reasons.

Layout of the 31 is straightforward, as can be seen in the drawing: V-berth, head, dinette and galley. A 6′ 2″ owner said he has standing headroom in the main cabin, but has to stoop going forward.

Light and ventilation on the 31 are by means of a skylight and four fixed ports in the main cabin, plus two opening ports in the head and a hatch over the Vberths. The 35 has four fixed ports, six opening ports and four hatches besides the companionway, including one in the head and another over the galley (actual number seems to have changed over the years). Most owners rate ventilation as good.

The 35, by virtue of its size advantage, naturally received more glowing remarks for livability than the 31. One owner said it is the “perfect liveaboard for a close couple.” A few owners, however, said the berths are “tight.” Settee lengths in the Classic model, however, are 6′ 7″ and the double aft berth is 6′ 4″. (We do not have widths on file.) Headroom is 6’4″ in the main cabin, 6′ 2″ in the aft cabin (Classic model). We like the offset double V-berth of the Encore model, despite the fact that the person sleeping outboard has to crawl over his/her partner to get out. This arrangement allows for a dressing seat opposite, and tends to waste less space than a V-berth. One last remark about the two 35 interiors: fans of the Classic say that the V-berth is a lousy place to sleep…true, underway, but at anchor the best breezes come through the forward hatch. Aft cabins, no matter how well ventilated with portlights and hatches, are a bit stuffy.

Both boats feature oiled teak bulkheads and joinerwork with varnished pine strapping in book cases and above quarter berths, bi-fold doors and swiveling lights.

A Paloma instantaneous LPG water heater was offered as an option and universally liked by those who bought one. While they are still made, the company doesn’t warrant them for marine use (but who cares?). There are, of course, others on the market, most of which are more expensive without offering any real improvements.

While one owner said the craftsmanship of his Niagara is “Hinckley quality,” we think that’s stretching it, though the work is outstanding for what amounts to a production boat.

Raised bulwarks on both boats give a far greater sense of security than mere toerails. Numerous 35 owners said that the high bow and 4″ bulwarks do much to keep the cockpit dry.

The 35 has a bowsprit with rod bobstay, which makes carrying anchors easy. The 31 was criticized by one owner for having an inadequate bow roller.

The cockpit of the 35 is quite large—great for lounging, but one owner said it’s too wide for bracing the feet when heeled.

The 35’s mainsheet traveler is out of the way, on the coachroof, but it doesn’t enable the helmsman easy access for trimming (always a trade-off!). On the 31, drawings show the traveler is end-of-boom on some boats, in the cockpit on others (another tradeoff).

End-of-boom is great for singlehanding, but doesn’t afford the control of mid-boom sheeting.

The 31 has no bridgedeck, while the 35 does—again, the coastal-offshore difference.

Hardware and stanchions have proper backing plates and deck reinforcement.

Performance

Where the 35 edges the 31 for cruising comfort, when it comes to performance, the 31 excels. Thanks to its big sloop rig with 492 square feet of sail, it does nicely in light airs. This also means reefing is required earlier—most owners say at about 15 knots.

And nearly all said so. Owners also report that the boat sails exceptionally well on all points; she’s stable, well-balanced and quick. “Will outpoint most racer-cruisers,” said the owner of a 1993 model. Another said, “This is a technical cruiser/racer, not for the beginner.”

The 35, by contrast, is not so fast nor closewinded. It’s smaller sailplan suits it more to breezy conditions and offshore work. One owner said speed improves dramatically over 8 knots of wind. It points respectably, though not as high (partly due to wide sheeting angles), and off the wind owners say she doesn’t track as well as she could. Overall, however, owners rate the boat’s handling as above average. And they say the 35 “cuts through the seas” better than the 31.

Auxiliary Power

Besides the unusual interior of the Niagara 35 Classic, perhaps the next most distinguishing feature of these boats is the standard Volvo diesel with Sail Drive. For those who don’t know, a sail drive is rather like the lower end of an outboard motor. Advantages of it include locating the prop somewhat farther forward, directing prop wash straight aft instead of down at an angle, and elimination of shaft logs and stuffing boxes. A major disadvantage is that the casting is aluminum, which requires good quality zincs to prevent corrosion, and meticulous inspection and replacement of them. And, in the case of these two Niagaras, the engines to which they are coupled are on the small side.

Now, some traditionalists like Tom Colvin think most boats have engines far too large, that they add unnecessary weight and burn excessive fuel and seldom are run at recommended rpm. On a sailboat, after all, primary locomotion should be sailpower, with the engine used only for close-quarter maneuvering.

Throughout the industry, customer preference, however, has been decidedly the opposite. We received numerous complaints about the small Volvo diesels initially offered with the Niagaras—a puny 13-hp. MD7A on the 31 and a 23-hp. MD11C diesel on the 35. A Westerbeke 21 was optional on the 31, and several different engines on the 35, including Westerbeke 27, 33, 40 and Universal M35D, all with V-drives. While the Sail Drive powerplants can push the boats at hull speed in calm water, they lack the power to punch the boat through head seas, and we all know that when the crew gets sick of slogging to windward and the day is growing late, help from the motor gets one home faster.

Corrosion is a major concern of Sail Drive owners, though many said they’d had no problems. On this issue, owners seemed split down the middle: half said they wouldn’t buy a Sail Drive unit, half said they were much less expensive and hadn’t experienced problems.

All agree that the Sail Drive greatly enhances handling in reverse, making the boat’s movement predictable—a not inconsequential consideration when berthed in a tight marina slip.

On the flip side, V-drives make access to the stuffing box difficult. But even including conventional diesel installations, owners rated overall access to the engines somewhat difficult for certain operations.

The Niagara 31 and 35 are two very nice, albeit different boats. Construction quality is above average. The 31, designed by German Frers, is a quick and nimble racer/cruiser that also makes a comfortable coastal cruiser. The 35 has made successful passages to the Caribbean and South Pacific islands. She’s not large by today’s blue-water standards, but well-built and very handsome.

We’re not all that keen on balsa-cored hulls for long-range cruising, but we did not receive one complaint about delamination in the hull (a few in the deck, where it is more predictable). This, we presume, is a testament to the attention and skill of Hinterhoeller Yachts. And while we think the spade rudder and small skeg on the 31 is perfect for its application, we still wonder about the absence of a skeg on the 35. Only one owner, however, lamented this configuration, though several noted the boat’s less than steady offwind handling, which might be one of the effects.

Hinterhoeller boats have traditionally held their values well. A look at the Price History illustrates this, at least until a few years ago, when values of most boats dipped. Still, today’s prices for an early 80’s Niagara 31 (about $41,000) and 35 (about $60,000) are not too far below their original base prices.

We’d take the Niagara 31 for club racing and coastal cruising, the Niagara 35 for down island cruising. Our preference would be for the larger Westerbeke-powered models, sans Sail Drive despite the fact it handles better. The corrosion potential in saltwater would worry us.

• Compatibility Issues.  Perhaps the main reason why EXE format is preferred is that it’s self-contained and doesn’t require any third-party tools to open it. Self-running, stand-alone executable files allow you to distribute PowerPoint presentations that anyone can run. Coworkers, clients and employees who receive your executable file can click it to view the presentation immediately; they do not need to install PowerPoint or a special viewer to view your slides. You can’t save a PowerPoint presentation as an executable, but you can use a program that converts one into an executable file.

Convert Using PowerPoint Slide Show Converter

Visit the DZSoft website (link in Resources) and download the company's PowerPoint Slide Show Converter program.

Install the software and launch it. When the opening screen appears, click "Simple Mode" to continue.

Click "Select" to view your hard drive's files and find one of your PowerPoint files. Double-click that file to select it.

Click "Make Slideshow" to create your executable file. The program places it in the folder listed in the Output File Name text box.

Use Convert PPT for PowerPoint

Go to Topalt.com (link in Resources) and click "Download Now" to download and install "Convert PPT for PowerPoint."

Launch the application and click "Next" to view the Select Task window. Click the "Self Running EXE File" radio button to select that option and then click "Next."

Click "Browse" to browse for your PowerPoint file and double-click the file to load it.

Click the "Browse" button next to "Output Directory" to view a list of your hard drive's folders. Click the folder where you wish to store the converted EXE file and the click "OK."

Click "Next" then "Finish" to create your executable in the folder you selected.

2 reasons why you might want to convert a PPTX file to an EXE file

1.   Compatibility issues: Your viewers might not have PowerPoint!

The independence of self-running executable files sets them apart from all other formats. The recipients of your EXE presentation will be able to view it with or without PowerPoint installed on their computer. On the contrary, presentations in PPT or PPTX can only be opened with certain versions of Microsoft PowerPoint, depending on what version they were created in. Wouldn’t that be frustrating not to be able to deliver a truly beautiful presentation with its animations, transitions, and triggers?

2.   Copyright protection: Make sure no one changes your work

Content authors are sometimes hesitant to share source PPT or PPTX files because they want to protect their presentations from unauthorized use. Executable files cannot be changed or copied because they are non-editable. So, if you wish to send a presentation to your students so that they can watch it but not modify it, opt for EXE format. However, this is not the only way to protect your copyright: we’ll demonstrate other simple methods later in this article.

Walkthrough of PPTX-to-EXE conversion

A simple way to convert your PowerPoint presentations to EXE, even without saving them as PPT or PPTX first, is to use a PowerPoint converter. Once you install it, you have a new tab added to your PowerPoint ribbon from which you can instantly access all the new capabilities. Once the conversion process is finished, you see a preview of your presentation in an opened window.

EXE vs HTML5 and Flash online formats

How To Create Standalone PowerPoint Presentations

Compiling a PowerPoint Presentation to a standalone application is very comfortable move. However, many users still aren’t aware of this handy trick. I guess you are already aware of the term ‘Standalone’, It is an application that doesn’t require any additional programs or addons to run.

By making it standalone, you can share the presentation files on the go, without any hassle. The receivers do not necessarily need Microsoft Office or PowerPoint installed on their PC.

How To Make Standalone Presentations

• First open the Presentation, which you wish to convert into a standalone program. Click Save As -> and choose ‘PowerPoint Show (.PPS)’ from the dropdown of format selection.
• Then run the file and choose Package for CD,  if you would like to set up Autorun.  
• When up for final presentation, export the .PPT as .PPS  to easily run the slideshow without accessing the toolbars and edit area.

Using Software

• There are literally hundreds of tools which offer Free PowerPoint to EXE conversion services.
• One of the best tools is VaySoft. Just run the application and choose the Source PowerPoint Presentation file and the destination directory path for the converted file.
• Tick ‘Generate Autorun for CD/DVD’, if you wish to play it automatically when a CD or DVD loads up.

Benefits Of Standalone Presentations

• You can directly launch the slideshow, without opening PowerPoint editor.

• This makes portability a lot more flexible, because can share the presentation with anyone.
• Compress the files and images into a single executable file.
• However, one drawback is executable files are vulnerable to malicious virus and malware and a few users may be reluctant to download and run them.

When i was a student I used to do these Standalone PowerPoint Presentations every week for different projects.. I really enjoyed it. it is the best way to present info in an attractive and fast way.

As in business, PowerPoint presentations are a typical event. In spite of the fact that PowerPoint presentations are not necessarily the best but most effective type of business presentations; moreover they do lend a lot of valuable benefits. Mainly, the adaptability, simplicity, and pace with which a business PowerPoint presentation can be produced and shared are presumably the most outstanding qualities.

How do I launch a Power Point slide show on startup?

I want to launch a Power Point presentation on startup - in slide show mode (I don't want to simply open the file).

This is to run on a kiosk.

From Microsoft's list of command line switches , you can use the /S switch to start a presentation:

To get the slideshow to start on boot-up create a shortcut to the path given above and put it in the Startup folder in the Start menu.

you can also rename the file to pps or ppsx. this should make the presentation go immediately in presentation mode.

How (and why) to start microsoft powerpoint from the command prompt.

You can run PowerPoint from the Command Line, and that gives you access to powerful options that control its launch behavior. Here's how to do it.

How to run powerpoint with a command, powerpoint command line switches and parameters.

You can open PowerPoint  from the Windows Command Prompt. Using this method, you can add additional parameters that let you do things like start PowerPoint in Safe Mode for troubleshooting, or start with a specific template.

There are two ways to open PowerPoint from the Command Prompt---one of which you need to know to find out which directory the "powerpnt.exe" file is located in. You can do this manually by digging through File Explorer, or you can use Command Prompt to find it.

First, open a Command Prompt window . You can do this by typing "cmd" in the Windows Search bar (located on the taskbar next to the Windows icon). Press Enter or click the "Command Prompt" application in the search results.

When you first open the Command Prompt, you'll start in your user account folder. From here, you can simply type this command and press Enter to launch PowerPoint:

start powerpnt.exe

You can also open PowerPoint from the directory that holds the powerpnt.exe file, but you need to know which directory it's in.

To find the exact location of the powerpnt.exe file, we'll need to go to the Program Files directory by using the cd  command. This command changes your current directory in Command Prompt.

Type this command, then press Enter:

cd\"program files"

You'll now be in the Program Files directory. The next step is to locate the directory where the powerpnt.exe file is located. Do so by typing the following command and pressing "Enter."

dir powerpnt.exe /s

Once you enter this command, the Command Prompt will locate the directory for you.

Now that you know which directory the powerpnt.exe file is located in, you can use the cd command to open the file path. In this example, you would need to enter the following command:

cd Microsoft Office\root\Office16

Now you should be in the directory where powerpnt.exe is located.

All that's left to do now is to type powerpnt , then press Enter. PowerPoint will open in its usual way.

However, the whole point of using the command is that you can use the different switches and parameters it offers.

Here's a list of the command switches you can use when launching PowerPoint, courtesy of the official Microsoft Office support site . Add these to the end of the "powerpnt" command on the command line as shown in the examples below:

Using these commands, you can open PowerPoint in any specific way you choose.

PowerPoint isn't the only Office product you can open this way---you can also open Word from the Command Prompt !

View, manage, and install add-ins for Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

When you enable an add-in, it adds custom commands and new features to Microsoft 365 programs that help increase your productivity. Because add-ins can be used by attackers to do harm to your computer, you can use add-in security settings to help protect yourself.

Note:  This article only applies to Microsoft 365 applications running on Windows.

View installed add-ins

You can directly install add-ins from this page or select  More Add-ins  to explore.

In the Office Add-ins dialog, select  My Add-ins  tab.

Select an add-in you want to view the details for and right-click to select  Add-in details  option.

Add-in categories explained

Active Application Add-ins      Add-ins registered and currently running on your Microsoft 365 program.

Inactive Application Add-ins      These are present on your computer but not currently loaded. For example, XML schemas are active when the document that refers to them is open. Another example is the COM add-in: if a COM add-in is selected, the add-in is active. If the check box is cleared, the add-in is inactive.

Document Related Add-ins      Template files referred to by open documents.

Disabled Application Add-ins     These add-ins are automatically disabled because they are causing Microsoft 365 programs to crash.

Add-in      The title of the add-in.

Publisher      The software developer or organization responsible for creating the add-in.

Compatibility      Look here for any compatibility issues.

Location      This file path indicates where the add-in is installed on your computer.

Description This text explains the add-in function.

Note:  Microsoft Outlook has one add-in option in the Trust Center: Apply macro security settings to installed add-ins . InfoPath has no security settings for add-ins.

Permanently disable or remove an add-in

To disable or remove an add-in follow these steps:

Select  File > Get Add-ins . Alternatively, you can select  Home > Add-ins .

In the Office Add-ins dialog, select  My Add-ins  tab.

Select an add-in you want to remove and right click to select  Remove  option.

View or change add-in settings

You can see and change add-in settings in the Trust Center, descriptions of which are in the following section. Add-in security settings may have been determined by your organization so not all options may be available to change.

Select  File  >  Get Add-ins .

Select  More Add-ins > Manage My Add-ins.

Select  Trust Center  >  Trust Center Settings  >  Add-ins.

Check or uncheck the boxes you want.

Add-in settings explained

Require Application Add-ins to be signed by Trusted Publisher      Check this box to have the Trust Center check that the add-in uses a publisher's trusted signature. If the publisher's signature hasn’t been trusted, the Microsoft 365 program doesn’t load the add-in, and the Trust Bar displays a notification that the add-in has been disabled.

Disable notification for unsigned add-ins (code will remain disabled)      When you check the Require Application Extensions to be signed by Trusted Publisher box, this option is no longer grayed out. Add-ins signed by a trusted publisher are enabled, but unsigned add-ins are disabled.

Disable all Application Add-ins (may impair functionality)      Check this box if you don't trust any add-ins. All add-ins are disabled without any notification, and the other add-in boxes are grayed out.

Note:  This setting takes effect after you exit and restart your Microsoft 365 program.

While working with add-ins, you may need to learn more about digital signatures and certificates , which authenticate an add-in, and trusted publishers , the software developers who often create add-ins.

Manage and install add-ins

Use the following instruction to manage and install add-ins.

To install a new add-in:

You can directly install popular add-ins on the page or go to More Add-ins  to explore. 

Select the add-in and select  Add . Or browse by selecting  Store  tab in the Office add-in dialog to find other add-ins to install and select Add for that add-in.

To manage your add-ins:

Select  File > Get Add-ins and from the bottom, select More Add-ins.  Or select  Home  >  Add-ins > More add-ins.

In the Office dialog, select My Add-ins tab. If you are not able to see your add-ins, select  Refresh to reload your add-ins.

Select  Manage My Add-in  to manage and select  Upload to browse and add an add-in from your device.

How to cancel a purchased add-in

If you've subscribed to an add-in through the Microsoft 365 Store that you don't want to continue, you can cancel that subscription.

Open the Microsoft 365 application and go to the Home  tab of the ribbon.

Select  Add-ins  and then select  More Add-ins > My Add-ins tab   to view your existing add-ins.

Select the app you want to cancel and select  Manage My Add-ins .

Under the Payment and Billing section choose Cancel Subscription .

Select  OK and then Continue .

Once that's complete you should see a message that says "You have cancelled your app subscription" in the comments field of your apps list.

Why is my add-in crashing?

Some add-ins might not be compatible with your organization's IT department policies. If that is the case with add-ins recently installed on your Microsoft 365 program, Data Execution Prevention (DEP) will disable the add-in and the program might crash.

VBA can do this:

ActivePresentation.Path will return the path to the presentation (w/o a trailing backslash)

ActivePresentation.Path & "\..\" & Whatever.EXE will give you the path to Whatever.EXE in the parent of the current presentation's folder.

ActivePresentation.Path & "\" & Whatever.EXE will point you at Whatever.EXE in the same folder as the presentation itself.

Hello, thank you for your reply. Can you tell how I can access the action button in vba. When I tries to do something like this, it shows a compilation error: can't assign to read only property

You can't do it that way.

Instead, save your file as a PPTM and add this code in a module you've inserted in the VBA editor.

Edit the AppName="DLLExp.exe" line to be AppName = "your program name"

Then add a shape to a slide, assign an action setting of Run Macro | LaunchSomething to it.

It'll launch your program when you click the shape during a slideshow.

It is of course still possible to create ppsx files in 2013 but Guruprased in not correct in thinking this creates a standalone .exe file. It has been marked as the answer by one of his colleagues but clearly isn't. Most methods of making exe files require you to downsave as a ppt file first and thereby lose some features.

Creating an .exe file will not solve that. Open the presentation on your system to ensure you can open it. If that works, put the file into a zip archive. Then re-send that zip file to the recipient. If PowerPoint is installed, then simply save the presentation in PowerPoint Show (*.ppsx) format. This starts the file in slideshow mode. She is a proven design which combines traditional elegance with practical accommodations. Nothing has been overlooked to satisfy both the sailor and the cruising enthusiast. Her generous headroom, two berths, full galley, and enclosed head are unique on a boat of this size. Her spacious cockpit affords seats long enough for an afternoon nap or additional overnight guests. Sailing or under power she is lively and responsive with a motion reminiscent of a much larger boat. Her ample beam and sufficient ballast make her very stiff without sacrificing valuable draft.

Attabuoy  is in need of general cleaning inside and out and some cosmetic work. The keel will need some minor fiberglass work. The sails are like new. The engine turns over, but has not been operated for a number of years. Take a look and you will fall in love!

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. Comfort Ratio

According to the seller, this vessel is in top shape. Everything is functional and in good working order. Updated batteries and thru-hulls as well as other upgrades set this boat apart from the pack. All cabin features, stove, fridge, and more are all good to go. All electronics, with the exception of the single-side-band radio, are less than 7 years old. The windlass is a Loughren-Tigres model with 275' of chain and 175' of 3/4" anchor line attached to a 55' Rocna anchor, all dating from 2018. Propane lines were replaced in 2020. Fridge is from 2017. Stock #365153 RARE 1981 Niagara 35 bluewater cruiser, updated throughout, ready to hit the high seas! This Niagara 35 is a classic built by Hinterhoeller Yachts for open water cruising. Thoughtful use of available space allows for great storage space and generates a roomy, spacious feel belowdecks not normally found in a 35-foot sailboat. This boat was built like a tank for handling any reasonable seas. Another feature rarely found in vessels of this size is a manufacturer-installed fireplace / heater which would be appreciated on adventures to the colder climes. This boat had a bottom job in 2022. In 2020, old batteries and thru-hulls were replaced with new ones. In 2019 the staysail and chain plate were replaced and radar installed. The fireplace is a wood burner and can also burn manufactured logs, coal or charcoal briquettes. It keeps the entire boat T-shirt temperature all winter long. The conventional head has been converted to a composting toilet with the holding tank space now occupied by a bank of 6 batteries along the centerline to improve the balance of the boat. The batteries are broken into a bank of 4 house batteries and 2 engine / windlass batteries. The seller is including a roller furling boom that needs only to be installed to replace the standard boom. Also included is a portable high output 40" double membrane water maker capable of producing 26-37gph of clean water and a brand new, never used, Air Line R360XL Hookah Dive System. All total, this is a great package for the cruise-minded sailor. A quality vessel at a good price. Reason for selling is not using enough.

We test sailed the 50L last winter in Florida. The L version has the optional lounge on top of the hardtop over the cockpit. Unlike some cats with flying bridges and lounges up high, the 50L doesn’t feel like a layer wedding cake.

The steering station is a traditional raised helm to starboard, and the lounge is just up a few stairs from there. The helmsman is in contact with those in the main cockpit and those in the lounge. Out sailing, we got the 50L up to 10 knots in a good breeze, so the boat is fast. It is also commodious and will make a very comfortable home for a family or a charter party.

The new Seawind 1600 has been in the works for a while and has finally arrived on the market. The 615 is a combination of simplistic and superior design with an outstanding crew, results in the ultimate luxury Caribbean cruising experience. The impeccable elegance of the interior with a lavish owner’s suite and the boat’s perfect wood quality are two great reasons to make you get the boat. The freedom to choose a four or five-double cabin is another, depending on the size of the family.

Multihull impresario, dealer, and broker Phil Berman (The Multihull Company) has sold more multihulls over the last 30 years than just about anyone. His latest project has been the development of the Balance line of performance cruising cats. Aimed at Blue-water sailors looking to sail fast and far, Switch 51 has proved itself and regarded in this day as a remarkable ocean cruising catamaran. This classic high-performance voyage was designed by VPLP and is said to combine a level of comfort, performance, and safety. It was built by Sud Composites in France with high tech materials. Sud initially built about 18 of these classic catamarans from 2001 to 2007.

Switch 51 hulls are built with vinyl ester sandwiched with a Klegecelle PVC foam core, thereby creating a hull light enough to be real quick and heavy enough to handle the ocean waves and swells. The saloon and galley are huge, with the cockpit spacious. The layout and accommodation are perfect for a small family with classic amenities aimed at making your stay on board a memorable one. This also a pretty affordable option in this category with prices on the used market as low as 450k.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
