On the East End of Long Island, New York, the Montauk Yacht Club has emerged from an extensive renovation. Spread across 35 acres, the property—originally built in 1928—comprises 107 guestrooms, three pools, two restaurants, indoor and outdoor bars, tennis and pickleball courts, a private beach, and over 200 wet slips that can accommodate boats up to 300 feet.

“The history of Montauk Yacht Club is as rich as the location is stunning,” says Baxter Underwood, CEO of Safe Harbor Marina, which bought the Montauk Yacht Club last year. “It is our great honor and joy to bring the Montauk Yacht Club back to Long Island, to her many patrons, and to our tens of thousands of boating families in the region.”

The design concept—spreadheaded by Newport, Rhode Island firm KPR Interiors —embodies quiet, elevated leisure. Although revitalized, the property continues to preserve the stories of its rich history. For instance, guestroom corridors are lined with black and white photos curated by a Montauk Library historian that reflect the legacy of the region.

New spaces, from the bar to the firepit, were added for guests to gather and enjoy views of the marina and Lake Montauk. Fishing stations and barbecues also were installed for marina guests, along with upgraded Wi-Fi, shore power, and seating areas on the docks.

The existing tennis facilities were also upgraded with the addition of new pickleball courts. At the pool bar, a sophisticated new pergola system was installed that opens the ceiling to the sunlight, while providing shelter during inclement weather. Extensive renovations to the exterior were also completed, including the installation of privacy screens between guest suite terraces. A new retail area was also added that offers a high-end mix of products.
