Lil Yachty Gives Fans Rare Look Into Close Friends to Celebrate New Instagram Feature
Yachty used the opportunity as a chance to reveal that he "threw up" after his recent set at Tyler, the Creator's Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival.
Lil Yachty ’s Instagram followers were given a rare look into the Let’s Start Here artist’s inner circle on Tuesday.
The move is in commemoration of a new feature on the platform, or more accurately, the extension of a feature once relegated to Stories and Notes. Starting Tuesday, Instagram users will be able to share feed posts and reels exclusively with those on their Close Friends list.
Prior to sharing a post or reel on IG, users will now be able to tap on Audience, at which point they can choose whether to share widely or solely with their Close Friends group. In a fitting celebration of the change, Yachty is giving his followers a glimpse into what IG bills as “the world of his Close Friends,” albeit only for a limited period of time.
Yachty’s Field Trip Tour continues this month with stops in Oslo, Stockholm, Berlin, Manchester, and more. In September, Yachty spoke with Ecleen Luzmila Caraballo for an exclusive Complex interview about the tour and his C4 Energy partnership.
"It's a different show, and I've grown so much and so much has changed in my life," Yachty said of what to expect from the then-imminent live show experience this time around.
When utilizing IG's Close Friends feature on Tuesday, as seen above, he used the opportunity as a chance to reveal that he "threw up" after his recent set at Tyler, the Creator's Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival .

This weekend, Yachty will be at the 2023 edition of ComplexCon in Long Beach, CA to join a panel discussion on Sneaker of the Year alongside Joe La Puma, Jim Jones, and more. Head here for more info and to grab tickets .

Lil Yachty Adds All Of His Followers To His Close Friends On IG
Lil Yachty has had himself a truly amazing year both in and outside of music. Overall, it all started with the album Let's Start Here. This psychedelic rap album had a lot of people excited and it is still getting a ton of plays. Moreover, he has been working with Drake and J. Cole . Not to mention, he has dropped some other experimental rap tracks this year that have grown his cache. Add last year's "Poland" into the mix and it becomes clear that Yachty is on a whole different time right now.
Furthermore, Yachty got to perform at Camp Flog Gnaw over the weekend. It was a huge moment for him as the crowd was going wild. After the show, he got to take in some of the other performances. For instance, he was front and center for the Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar set. Now, however, he is making new moves on social media in light of his performance. Essentially, he has taken all of his Instagram followers and has added them to his Close Friends IG story. This led to his first post as part of this new strategy.

Lil Yachty Updates His Socials
"I threw up after my Flog Gnaw set," Yachty said. Essentially, Yachty wanted to tell all of his fans what happened. He could have done that on Twitter or his regular IG account, but alas, he wanted to make his fans feel a bit more special for a small amount of time. The Close Friends tab on IG is one that has probably led to a lot of inner conflict and turmoil from those who get jealous. For many, it is seen as some sort of exclusive club. However, for Yachty, it seems more like just something to have fun with.

Instagram Now Lets You Share Feed Posts and Reels Exclusively With Your Close Friends
It’s finally time to retire your “finsta.”.
Instagram has launched an all-new feature that will allow users to share feed posts and Reels exclusively with their Close Friends lists.
The feature, which has been available on Instagram Stories since 2018 and was later extended to Notes, looks to harness the growing number of users that actively utilize their Close Friends list as a “pressure-free space” to connect with people. “We hope this opens up more ways to be your most authentic self on Instagram while having more choices over who sees your content,” Instagram wrote in a release.

Social Media Week
Lil yachty's instagram stunt proves the power of inclusive campaigns, rooting work in the community is crucial to success, instagram and wieden+kennedy leaders said at social media week.
ADWEEK House is headed to Las Vegas on January 8! Our house is your house to unwind, recharge and network during the industry’s largest consumer tech moment. RSVP .
Last year, rapper Lil Yachty made the unusual move of adding his 11.3 million Instagram followers to his Close Friends list on the app.
His fans were confused, wondering why a globally famous figure had invited them into an intimate circle. Lil Yachty posted on Instagram as if only his closest friends were watching, becoming one of the most talked about phenomena on the internet.
To this day, many of Lil Yachty’s followers haven’t realized that his strange behavior was part of an Instagram campaign promoting the Close Friends feature to Generation Z .
In an era when marketers are more aware of the importance of reaching diverse audiences, Instagram’s campaign resonated because it was “rooted in the community,” said Arinze Emeagwali, brand marketing lead at Instagram, at ADWEEK’s Social Media Week in New York on Wednesday.
“A lot of times in marketing, you’re marketing for yourselves… for awards or leadership. But it’s about always rooting it in the community and the consumer. I’m not too good to ask my 12-year-old nephew what he’s into,” Emeagwali said. “It’s not rocket science, but a lot of times we overthink it. I force myself to make it about the work and to fight for the ideas.”
However, that might be easier said than done, as what makes a good piece of creative work is subjective.
John “JP” Petty, global creative director at Wieden+Kennedy ’s Bodega unit, said to eliminate that subjectivity, his team asks themselves three questions: “Can our people see themselves in this work? Can they make it their own? Does it provide a social currency, if you will?”
Work like the Lil Yachty stunt, or Nike’s “Yardrunners” program by W+K that celebrates HBCU students, ticks those boxes because it gave the diverse communities for which it was intended for a seat at the table, Petty said.
Inclusivity may have become a marketing buzzword or fallen down the list of some companies’ priorities, but Petty argued that such campaigns, including “Yardrunners,” continue to see business results.
Making such inclusive work successful “takes leadership and people in the building willing to advocate for that,” he said. “A commitment to the community is super important. The users remember that—it means everything to them.”
