Ghosts of the past.

  • Walkthrough

Ghosts of the Past is a Side Quest in The Witcher 3 : Wild Hunt . In this quest, Geralt encounters the former Witcher Letho .

In order to complete this quest, you must have spared Letho during The Witcher 2 for PC, or answered in the Nilfgaardian court that Letho is alive.

letho of gulet witcher 3 location

You do not need to pick up the quest “ The Fall of the House Reardon ” to start this quest; however, if you finish this quest before picking up " The Fall of the House Reardon ," the latter will automatically be completed when you accept it.

Finding Letho

While this mission isn't particularly difficult, the approach to the farm is fought with traps. Just approach very slowly and keep using your senses. Traps appear on the minimap when you scan nearby. Walk carefully, sidestep the pits, and disarm or avoid the other traps.

When you reach the barn, you'll find a familiar old face. You can leave Letho to face the foes alone, but what's the fun in that? Jump into the fray and help and old friend out.

After helping him fight off bandits at the barn. Follow him on horse back to the man that betrayed him. Again, fight these bandits after Letho confronts the man that betrayed him. There is one more group you two need to confront. Ride off again to Lidenvale to fight the last group.

How to Complete Letho’s NPC Questline in The Witcher 3

Image of Ishmael Romero

Letho of Gulet is no stranger to those who’ve played The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. He was the main antagonist and the cause of most (if not all) of Geralt’s troubles in that game. Here’s how to complete Letho’s NPC questline in The Witcher 3.

The Witcher 3 Letho NPC Questline Walkthrough

Keep in mind this quest is only available in certain circumstances. It entirely depends on how you finished The Witcher 2, or the decision you made when establishing your world state in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt  during your little interview at Vizima, Letho can be alive in your game.

If you did happen to choose to let Letho live even after all that he did in the last game, you will come across him during the sidequest ‘The Fall of the House of Reardon (picked up from Lindenvale).’ A woman will ask you to check out her old estate that has been overrun by monsters. Once Geralt arrives, he will find a barn full of booby traps that you can either disarm or choose to ignore. Head to the back of the barn and fix the ladder so that you can climb up and reveal Letho hiding from some enemies.

Ghost of the Past Walkthrough

From there, you can decide to help Letho with those looking for him, which you should in order to trigger the ‘Ghost of the Past’ questline and see how this all ends. Jump down and show off your sword skills in order to help an old friend, of sorts. After slaying the groups of scouts, you will have the opportunity to ride with Letho to the old acquaintance who sold him out. Go ahead and take care of that traitor as well.

Letho will now take you to his last destination and that is where this particular The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt questline splits and Geralt will have some decisions to make. Letho will face a bounty hunter, but before doing so he asks that you not interfere no matter what happens. He then goes into battle solo where he falls to a crossbow. This is when Geralt must make his first decision: does he kill those who have slain his friend, or does he not interfere?

It turns out that Letho had this whole thing planned and was trying to fake his own death. If Geralt chooses to kill the bounty hunters then there are no witnesses to spread the woven tale, setting Letho free once and for all. Don’t worry though, if you did happen to go into a rage, murdering everyone before you, you still have one more opportunity to help Letho in The Witcher 3: Wild hunt. After spoiling his plan (that he should’ve just clued you in on), you can offer him a place at Kaer Morhen where he can find safe refuge.

It’s awesome to stumble across him, and even cooler to have the option of lending him a helping hand despite all he’s done in the past. Of course, the decision is ultimately up to you.

So how did you feel when you stumbled across the Witcher who almost ruined your life? Hopefully, you enjoyed this Letho questline walkthrough for The Witcher 3 . Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments

Who is Letho of Gulet?

Letho in witcher 2, letho in witcher 3, why we want to see more of letho.

Letho: I have to kill you. Geralt: Try it. But I’m no king. Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

Letho is a Witcher from the School of the Viper that only appears in the Witcher games. Despite his muscular appearance, Letho is highly cunning and intelligent. Like many Witchers, he was taken as a child, learned the art of monster slaying, and survived the Trial of the Grasses.

He is known as Letho of Gulet, with Gulet being the name of a town near Vengenberg in Aedirn, one of the Northern Kingdoms . So the assumption is that he’s from here, even though it’s never confirmed.

Letho is considered one of the most powerful Witchers in the games and one of the rare few to have defeated Geralt. From childhood until his training as a monster slayer, Letho resided in Gorthur Gvaed , a keep similar to Kaer Morhen. The place housed the School of the Viper and its disciples. When the Usurper ruled Nilfgaard, he demanded that the Witchers of Gorthur Gvaed bend to his will.

The Witchers refused, and the Nilfgaardian Army seized the keep, forcing the remaining few survivors from the School of the Viper to hide. Letho and two fellow Vipers, Serrit and Auckes, were among them.

A Witcher’s Debt

In the year 1270, in a forest in Angren, Letho was facing a Slyzard when the monster hit him with its tail, poisoning the Witcher. Letho was on the brink of death when Geralt appeared, saving his fellow Witcher and earning Letho’s favor in return. At the time, Geralt was chasing the Wild Hunt for the whereabouts of Yennefer. Letho, Serrit, and Auckes share the Wild Hunt’s location and ride with Geralt to face the wraiths.

letho of gulet witcher 3 location

The party finds the Wild Hunt in Nilfgaard, at the Hanged Man’s Tree. The Witchers stand their ground against the Wild Hunt but reach a stalemate. Finally, Geralt offers a trade, himself for Yennefer, and the Wild Hunt leader, Eredin , accepts.

Determined to repay his debt to Geralt, Letho takes Yennefer under his care. The sorceress, however, is bewildered, amnesic, and causing all sorts of problems for the Vipers. Her lack of discretion attracts the Nilfgardiaan secret police, and Letho’s group is caught and thrown into jail. However, Emhyr van Emreis makes an irresistible offer to Letho: kill Northern kings, and he will restore the Viper School. Letho accepts, setting up the events of the second Witcher game.

Kill as many rulers as we could. Lay the blame on the sorceresses. Breed chaos. Prepare the North, soften it before the invasion. And you know what’s incredible? We could not have imagined more fertile soil. No matter what the war’s outcome, the Northern Monarchs’ll accuse one another, pursue their god-given rights and be at each other’s throats for years to come. Letho, Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

Letho is the central antagonist in Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. The game’s spectacular opening cinematic shows a ship under attack by the burly assassin. The Witcher freezes most of the crew with a Northen Wind bomb and takes advantage of the racket to behead King Demavend III of Aedirn, his first target.

Originally Letho was supposed to kill King Esterad Thyssen of Poviss and Kovir. But after a serendipitous encounter with Síle de Tansarville , one of the founding members of the Lodge of Sorceresses, he decided to alter his plans.

Using the sorceress as a smokescreen to hide his actual employer and motives, Letho agrees to her request to assassinate King Demavend III of Aedirn.

As Letho himself claims: “Initially, she watched my every move. But sooner or later, everyone starts treating me like a big oaf. I mean, I can’t change how I look.” This allowed Letho to continue with his deception.

After killing Demavend, Letho claims he’s trying to hide from the Aedirnian manhunt, and Síle points him to Iorveth , a leader of the Scoia’tael . With the head of the king as a trophy, Letho introduces himself to Iorveth and discloses his king-slaying mission. They form a temporary alliance.

Second Encounter with Geralt

The Kingslayer’s next target was King Foltest of Temeria. However, the monarch had hired Geralt as his bodyguard, who opposed Letho’s first attempt. Aware that Temeria would suffer a siege, Letho infiltrated the castle as a wounded monk and operated in the commotion to assassinate Foltest.

Geralt heard the king and ran to his chambers, only to find the ruler already dead. The White Wolf chases after Letho, and since he’s still suffering from amnesia after the Wild Hunt, he fails to recognize the old acquaintance. Letho manages to escape from Geralt with the help of the Scoia’tael. When the guards find the king, Geralt is the only one in his chambers, becoming the primary suspect and earning himself a prison cell.

After murdering Foltest, Letho tries to convince Ciaran aep Easnillen, one of Iorveth’s lieutenants, to betray his leader. The elf refuses, and Letho kills his entire squadron to hide his traces, leaving Ciaran to be captured by guards from Flotsam. Letho alleges that he betrayed Ioverth because the elf was hard to manipulate, dangerous, and would eventually be able to see through his true intentions.

In the meantime, Geralt is pursuing Letho to clear his name. The White Wolf asks Iorveth for assistance because Letho tried to betray the elf. The Scoia’tael help Geralt, but when they find Letho, the Blue Stripes attack Iorveth. The next scene portrays Letho vs. Geralt, and the Kingslayer overpowers the White Wolf.

letho of gulet witcher 3 location

Letho spares Geralt, paying him back for the time he saved his life. This fight is significant as one of the only times Geralt is defeated and has led many players to speculate whether Letho is stronger than Geralt.

If we’re talking about pure physical strength, the answer is likely yes, given Letho’s bulky, muscular frame. However, Geralt is likely faster and a better swordsman. Another key factor is that Geralt isn’t well-prepared for the fight and still suffers from amnesia, which means he hasn’t fully regained his skills.

In any case, Letho kidnaps Triss and forces the sorceress to teleport them to Aedirn. Once they arrive in Vergen, Letho lets go of Triss and rendezvous with his fellow Vipers Witchers, Serrit and Auckes, in a hideout.

As his attempt to overpower Iorveth fails, Letho assumes that the Scoia’tael know his treachery. In a preemptive attack, the Viper Witchers massacre the elves under Iorveth.

Letho then charges his fellow Viper school Witchers Serrit and Auckes with assassinating King Henselt of Kaedwen. Meanwhile, he attends the Summit at Loc Muinne , a diplomatic gathering of politicians, sorceresses, and other influential individuals from the Northern Kingdoms and the Nilfgaardian Empire.

Saving Triss or Not: Letho Consequences

  • If Geralt decides to rescue Triss at Loc Muinne, Letho doesn’t appear during the A Summit of the Mages cutscene.
  • If Geralt doesn’t rescue Triss and helps Roche save Anais, Letho saves the sorceress but is captured by guards. During the Summit of Mages, Letho was present but restrained and snitched on the Lodge of Sorceresses. He claimed that they had conspired with him to assassinate the kings. When the dragon Saesenthessis attacks, Letho manages to escape.

Letho knew Síle would throw him to the wolves, so he sabotages her megascope, turning it into a deadly trap. The player can save Síle or let her die due to Letho’s trickery.

Finally, Letho visits the Temerian Quarter and has a possible final encounter with Geralt, depending on the player’s decisions.

After chugging some vodka and chit-chatting, Geralt regains the rest of his memories. Finally, Letho lays all his cards on the table, divulging his days of caring for Yennefer, his capture by the Imperial secret police, and the mission assigned to him by the Nilfgaardian Emperor.

Spare or Kill Letho

To conclude the dialog, the player must choose to confront Letho or let him go:

  • If the player decides to fight Letho, you will ultimately kill him.
  • If the player decides to spare Letho, he leaves, and the game ends.

Should you kill Letho in Witcher 2? While the decision is yours, we prefer to keep him alive. This allows you to meet Letho again in Witcher 3 if you start the game by importing your Witcher 2 save or simulate a save and say that you spared him. We also like his character because he fought to protect his school and helped Geralt, Yennefer, and Triss, showing that he does adhere to some code of honor.

Letho has a minor role in Witcher 3, but will only appear based on your choices. If you load a save from Witcher 2 where you killed Letho, the man will not appear.

If you choose to simulate a Witcher 2 save, you will be asked several questions at the start of the game. The most important one is whether you killed or spared Letho. You can only do Letho’s sidequest if you spare him, which is our suggestion.

We don’t recommend skipping the save simulation, as the game will automatically make some decisions, including assuming that you killed Letho.

In case Letho does not appear in Witcher 3, albeit with the right choices, you may have to restart the game.

Letho Witcher 3 Quest: Ghosts of the Past

The most natural way to find Letho is during the sidequest The Fall of the House of Reardon, which takes you to a monster-infested manor. However, you can also stumble upon the location without taking the side quest . Letho’s location in Witcher 3 is in Reardon Manor.

Geralt notices that the environment is infested with traps and triggers the sidequest Ghosts of the Past. Geralt encounters Letho on a barn’s second floor, where the latter has already dealt with the monsters.

During their conversation, Letho informs Geralt that after escaping from Loc Muinne, Emhyr betrayed him and sent assassins and mercenaries after Letho. After dispatching some of the said mercenaries with the player’s help, Letho says he will hunt for Louis, who disclosed his location. The game will prompt the player with two choices:

  • Love to see that: this one allows us to continue Letho’s sidequest, which we recommend.
  • Good luck : you bid farewell to the Viper, and he’s never seen again. You can’t retake the sidequest if you pick this one.

Geralt follows Letho to Louis, who leads them to a bounty hunter called Vester. Next, Letho asks to go alone into the barn where Vester is and orders Geralt not to interfere. Letho attracts Vester and his pals but ends up losing the fight. Geralt runs towards him, and two more choices pop up:

  • You’re good as dead: you fight the remaining survivors and kill them, but Letho isn’t too happy about it.
  • Don’t want trouble: Geralt doesn’t fight the men but persuades them to take Letho’s medallion to prove his death rather than the head. That’s the best, narratively speaking, choice.

Both alternatives lead to the same outcome. Geralt notices that Letho isn’t dead but forged his death with Zanguebarian venom. However, he needed witnesses to back up his end and finally be rid of his pursuers. If Geralt kills everyone, Letho’s plan goes down in shambles. Still, this doesn’t make a difference, as you will still have two additional options:

  • You could go to Kaer Morhen: Geralt invites Letho to the fortress. At first, the Viper is hesitant, but he accepts. Later on, he helps fight the Wild Hunt in the invasion.
  • You’ll find a place to hide: and so Letho does. He goes away, never to be seen again.

If Letho goes to Kaer Morhen, there will be a few different dialogues just before the battle against the Wild Hunt. Most Witchers are unhappy with your decision to bring Letho there but brush it aside.

letho of gulet witcher 3 location

Like many Witcher fans, we appreciate Letho for his depth and complexity. For one, he’s a formidable opponent to Geralt. However, not only his prowess in combat draws players in, but also his captivating backstory and conflicted motivations.

Letho’s loyalty to his fellow witchers and his desire to restore the Viper School give him a sympathetic angle that encourages players to view him as more than a simple villain.

Throughout the game, Letho challenges Geralt’s perceptions and forces players to confront moral ambiguities. This blend of intrigue, complexity, and combat skill makes Letho an unforgettable character that continues to captivate Witcher fans. We sincerely hope CDPR brings him back somehow, ideally with a game from his perspective.

Letho doesn’t appear in the Witcher books or Netflix show. That’s high praise for the writers at CD Projekt Red, as they managed to create an entirely new character beloved by many. Many players have expressed interest in playing a Witcher game from Letho’s perspective or at least having him appear in future games.

If you want Letho to help during the Battle of Kaer Morhen, you must complete his side quest “Ghosts of the Past” and invite him to the keep.

Letho, the Kingslayer, kills kings as part of his deal with Emhyr var Emreis, the Emperor of Nilfgaard. In return for his services, Emhyr promises to rebuild the School of the Viper, where Letho trained as a witcher. Letho’s primary goal is to secure a future for his fellow Viper witchers by restoring their school.

A fan theory suggests Letho’s muscular build might be due to a genetic mutation affecting myostatin, a protein that inhibits muscle growth. The witcher mutations could have impacted his myostatin levels, causing increased muscle mass. However, this is purely speculative without evidence from the Witcher games or their creators.

Not everyone hates Letho, although some characters, including Eskel and Lambert , have fair reasons to dislike him, like his manipulative actions, role in destabilizing the North and helping Nilfgaard, and regicide.

Letho’s moral alignment is not clear-cut. As a complex character, he can be seen as both a villain and an anti-hero. For example, even though he kills kings and inadvertently frames Geralt, he also has a noble goal (restoring his Witcher school) and helps Geralt and other characters. Players’ opinions on Letho may also vary based on their in-game choices and interpretations of his motivations.

Murillo Zerbinatto

Murillo loves three things: RPG games, fantasy books, and Henry Cavill. So it doesn’t come as a surprise why he immersed himself in the Witcher universe. After bulldozing the novels and getting a platinum trophy in the Witcher 3, he eagerly awaits the next game installment to further expand the saga.

How to Complete Ghosts Of The Past Side Quest in The Witcher 3

Image of Iya Paterno

The Witcher 3 features several complex characters who offer a lot in the story and your overall experience. One of them is Letho , who Geralt can encounter again in one of the side quests in The Witcher 3. Letho was one of the main characters in the second game, and in this side quest, you learn more about the former antagonist's personal conflict. Here's how to complete the Ghosts of the Past side quest in The Witcher 3.

How to start the Ghosts of the Past side quest in The Witcher 3

Unlike the regular quests that follow the main storyline, you cannot trigger this side quest through one of the notes you see on a notice board or simply by speaking to a character in the game. To start Ghosts of the Past, you need to travel to it. Head to Reardon Manor , which is on the north side of Downwarren in Velen. When you get there, enter the largest building while successfully avoiding the traps. The quest triggers when you go inside the barn .

How to reunite with Letho in The Witcher 3

letho of gulet witcher 3 location

You can use your Witcher Sense to find a ladder that's on the floor of the barn. Examine the object to pick it up. This prompts the cutscene where Geralt reunites with Letho. As the two Witchers speak, a group of scouts arrives outside.

Letho asks you to aid him in taking them down. Regardless of your answer, you end up fighting them. They are not at par with the powerful monsters you normally deal with in the game, so this part is fairly easy.

Should you cut the quest short or help Letho?

After the quick fight, Letho tells you he intends to talk with his old friend Louis. The game gives you two choices. You can either respond, Love to see that , which will prompt you to go with Letho and proceed with the quest until its full end. You can also opt to say Good luck instead, which cuts the quest short, and you'll never see him again. Unless this is your first playthrough and you are, for whatever reason, rushing to the end of the main storyline, we recommend you go with the first option and see this quest through until its end.

Should you free Letho or unintentionally foil his plan?

If you decide to see this quest through, you will quickly travel with Letho on horseback to visit Louis. The big old Witcher also has a lot of interesting things to say to you during this quick journey. During the meeting with Louis, your responses do not have much impact. There's a fight against a group of fairly weak bandits in the end which you can easily finish. In the end, a wounded Louis reveals the man's location with a pin on Letho's head. After this encounter, you set off to Lindevale with Letho.

Related: Best Witcher 3 Builds for Early Game

Once you get to Lindevale with Letho, a cutscene plays. He instructs you to stay out of the confrontation he's about to have, which is a subtle warning that intervening in the events that are about to unfold foils his plan that you do not know of yet. Letho fights with the bounty hunters and falls, prompting you to run up to them, giving you two choices. You can select You're good as dead as a response where you fight and kill the bounty hunters. You can easily accomplish this but doing this foils his plan of faking his own death.

We suggest you opt for Don't want trouble as a response, following Letho's orders. You tell them to take Letho's medallion instead of his head. Whatever response you go with, Geralt discovers that Letho is alive and takes him inside.

Letho wakes and reveals that he planned to fake his own death to be free from these bounty hunters. So if you intervene and kill his attackers, his plan fails. But if you follow his orders of not intervening, this finally frees Letho. Regardless of the outcome, Letho plans to go off somewhere else. Should you need his help, later on, you can invite him to Kaer Morhen. The end of this last conversation with the old Witcher completes the Ghosts of the Past quest.

Whether you try to complete the side quests in The Witcher 3 on your first playthrough or your next one, they are definitely not something you'd want to miss. If you're new to the game or are a returning player, we've got you covered with some useful tips for The Witcher 3 to get you started or refresh your memory.

The Witcher 3: Ghosts Of The Past Side Quest Walkthrough

During Ghost Of The Past, Geralt has the chance to help an old enemy. This is how to do so.

Quick Links

Starting the quest and aiding letho, paying a visit to louis, dealing with the mercenaries.

There are plenty of amazing side quests in The Witcher 3 . And in some cases, their greatness comes from the fact they feature excellent characters . For instance, the 'Ghosts of the Past' quest sees the return of Letho, who is one of the main characters in the second game. In The Witcher 3, though, the compelling former antagonist has plenty of problems.

RELATED: The Witcher 3: All Of The Optional Side Quests You Should Follow Up On

All of his issues revolve around people wanting him dead. Fair. Of course, this quest is only available if Letho survived the second game.

Updated on December 2, 2022 by Quinton O'Connor: One of our favorite things about the Witcher series is how it treats a few of its one-time antagonists. 'Ghosts of the Past' is one of the greatest examples of this. New players will get to experience the quest with the arrival of the new current-gen graphical update, so we'd best do our part and put a fresh coat of paint on our guide.

The Witcher 3 Screenshot Of Reardon Manor On Map

You can't trigger this quest by finding a note on a notice board or speaking to someone. Instead, you have to travel directly to it - you may go there as part of 'The Fall of the House of Reardon' contract.

The start point is at Reardon Manor , which is just north of Downwarren in Velen. Once there, you need to enter the largest building in the area while avoiding the traps. Upon going inside the barn, the quest triggers.

Whenever you start 'Ghosts of the Past', know that there's a firm deadline on ending it. If it hasn't been completed before 'The Isles of Mist' main story quest, it will forever remain unfinished.

Witcher 3 Screenshot Of Meeting Letho

Using Witcher Sense, you can easily find a ladder laid on the floor of the barn. Examine the thing to pick it up and trigger a cutscene.

During which, Geralt reunites with Letho, and the two Witchers talk. Partway through their conversation, a group of scouts appears outside, looking for the bigger monster slayer.

Letho asks you to help him take them down. Your answer doesn't really matter as you fight them anyway. The enemies aren't exactly on the same level as all the powerful monsters Geralt has to kill regularly , so they won't be much trouble. After the battle, Letho says he wants to have a 'little chat' with his old friend Louis. You have two options:

  • "Love To See That." - With this response, you choose to go with Letho and continue the quest.
  • "Good Luck." - By choosing this one, the quest comes to a premature end, and you'll never see the bulky Witcher again. Unless you are, for whatever reason, adamantly against helping Letho, we strongly suggest going the other route.

Witcher 3 Screenshot Of Letho and Geralt With Louis

If you do indeed go with Letho, you have to follow him on horseback . Thankfully, the journey isn't too long, and Letho says some interesting things on the way.

While such a scenario is relatively unlikely, do make sure to stick close to your ally, because the quest will end if you lose track of him completely. The only way we can see this happening to you is if you should strangely decide to go off exploring on your own, but hey, just in case!

When you get there, you meet the infamous Louis. There's a short conversation, and your input doesn't really impact things. In the end, there's a fight, pitting you and Letho against a group of bandits . Once again, they are not exactly the toughest enemies in the series.

The last one left alive is always a wounded Louis. In agony, he reveals the location of the man who actually wants Letho's head. The two Witchers then set off to Lindevale .

Witcher 3 Screenshot Of Ghost In The Past Geralt Decision

Next, you must follow Letho to Lindevale . Again, don't go off on your own. When you get there, a cutscene will play. In it, Letho tells you to stay out of the confrontation he's about to have.

Letho ends up fighting the bounty hunters and falling. Geralt quickly runs up to them, and you're given a choice :

  • "You're Good As Dead." - You fight and kill the men. They aren't too tough, but you should watch out for the guy with the hammer.
  • "Don't Want Trouble." - You follow Letho's orders and don't intervene. Then tell them to take Letho's medallion instead of his head.

Regardless of the decision you make, Geralt realizes that Letho isn't dead and takes him inside. When he wakes, the Witcher reveals that he tried to fake his death, so they would stop sending people to kill him. The success of his plan hinges on having witnesses. Therefore, if you killed his attackers, his plan failed. But if you didn't intervene, Letho is finally free.

Either way, Letho plans on going away somewhere. If you want his help later, you can invite him to Kaer Morhen . After the conversation ends, so does the quest.

This quest, and indeed the absence or presence of Letho of Gulet in the game, are based on the player choosing to have decisions made in the previous game carried over to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt . This choice is an option upon starting a new game and will result in an additional interview during the Imperial Audience quest.

Best Answers for Witcher 3 Interrogation Questions (Aryan, Letho, & Others) – World State

Image of Andrej Barovic

CD Projekt Red understood that many new players would be joining in for the first time upon The Witcher 3 ’s release. To allow newcomers to experience the overarching decisions and consequences of the previous titles, they created a simulation that plays out during the initial part of Wild Hunt . Those who did import their saves from Assassins of Kings skipped this segment. The vast majority didn’t and had to make a choice.

With a blade under his throat, Geralt is interrogated in Vizima on the events unfolding during The Witcher 2 . While one should definitely give themselves in to roleplaying as Geralt and choosing what he would, some choices are objectively better than others based on their outcomes. It can be difficult to determine good from evil in the dark fantasy world of The Witcher, but if Geralt manages, so can we.

Warning: spoilers for all parts of Witcher 3 ahead.

Best Witcher 3 Interrogation Answers

Question 1: aryan la velette .

Screenshot from The Witcher 2 of Geralt killing Aryan La Valette in a duel.

The opening of The Witcher 2 features a siege ordered by King Foltest. Geralt comes across Aryan La Valette, the enemy commander, and has the option of either killing or sparing him.

Killed vs. Spared

Killing Aryan La Velette has some drastic consequences that come into play during the Broken Flowers main quest. In his search for Dandelion, Geralt reaches the Vegelbud Estate, where he encounters Mary Louisa, Aryan’s mother. She immediately calls Geralt a murderer and refuses to go to the races. Even so, Geralt gets there and encounters Molly, who is now a noblewoman herself.

On the other hand, if Aryan is alive, Molly remains a housemaid, and Aryan’s mother agrees to go with Geralt to the races.

The best answer to go for here is the first one. Why? It adds a dramatic weight to the questline and doesn’t at all change the difficulty. Also, it makes more sense—Aryan was the commander of the enemy’s forces, and Geralt was highly loyal to Foltest and would probably do the same without the player’s interference.

Question 2: Geralt’s escape from Flotsam

The first chapter of The Witcher 2 places Geralt in Flotsam, where he rescues his well-known pals, Dandelion and Zoltan Chivay. As the events unfold, Geralt can side with either Vernon Roche, commander of the Temerian “Blue Stripes,” who holds Geralt innocent of Foltest’s murder, or Iorveth, leader of the elven renegades Scoia’Tael.

Siding with Roche vs. Iorveth

This choice impacts a sidequest associated with Vernon Roche that can play out and happen no matter the decision. However, if one picks the Iorveth path, Vernon Roche will forbid Geralt from entering his Partisan Hideout, making Geralt find another way inside.

Naturally, Roche would have a positive outlook on Geralt if he sided with him in the first place and let him in, no questions asked. As it has a more positive effect on gameplay, siding with Vernon Roche is the preferable solution. It’s also more in line with the lore Geralt.

Question 3: Who did Geralt save? (Depends on question 2)

This question’s choices are entirely based on what the player chose in the previous interaction, as both decisions have separate questlines in The Witcher 2 .

Roche Path: Triss vs. Anais

If the player escaped Flotsam alongside Vernon Roche, they had two options: to save Geralt’s lover, Triss Merigold, or to aid Roche in rescuing Anais, Foltest’s daughter. Triss Merigold is one of the most popular characters in the Witcher franchise, and choosing her has a direct consequence in Wild Hunt .

A mage named Carduin will appear in Oxenfurt and be available as a talkable NPC. However, if the player decides to help Roche and rescue Anais–nothing happens. Carduin will not be available at Oxenfurt, or anywhere in the Northern Kingdoms for that matter, and it doesn’t have a general effect.

As a result, choosing to save Triss Merigold is better and provides the player with extra flavor and content with Carduin in Oxenfurt.

Iorveth Path: Triss vs. Saskia

The Triss option here is precisely the same as with Vernon Roche and has the same consequences. If players decide to side with Iorveth and help him lift the spell from Saskia, a dragon disguised as a human, there will be no general consequences. In The Witcher 2 , this decision leads to a massive witch hunt where Carduin supposedly dies, and he would be unavailable in The Witcher 3 .

As both are generally the same option in different situations, we again believe that saving Triss Merigold is better. Why sacrifice additional content?

Question 4: Sile de Tansarville

An image from The Witcher 3 featuring a badly wounded Sile de Tansarville in the dungeons beneath Temple Isle and Geralt standing over her.

Sile de Tansarville was a powerful mage who played a significant role in the assassination of King Foltest and other rulers. To no one’s surprise, she was a wanted criminal and employed her Megascope as a means of traversal. At one point, she is discovered by Letho of Gulet, who tampered with her Megascope.

Players are posed with the choice of saving her or leaving her Megascope alone, leading to her death.

Saving Sile vs. leaving her to die

If Geralt saves Sile, she reappears in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt . However, the means of her appearance are—to put it lightly—unfavorable. She ends up prisoner beneath Temple Isle, Redania’s zealots of Eternal Fire headquarters.

They lead a campaign against mages, and it’s no wonder such a powerful woman would be kept prisoner at a maximum security dungeon. As Yennefer can only teleport herself and one other person, Sile is forced to stay due to her weakness of body and spirit. Geralt can then choose to leave her to suffer or deal the merciful blow.

Leaving Sile to die in The Witcher 2 removes her from the following game entirely. This is the worse of the two options since it removes a fantastic dramatic moment in which Geralt is juxtaposed between his sense of honor and disdain for Sile. It’s one of the game’s best moments, and so the players should pick option 1–saving Sile.

Final Question: Letho of Gulet

Screenshot from the Witcher 2 of Letho holding a sword to Geralt's throat.

Letho of Gulet was the titular ‘Assassin of Kings’ and played the primary role in the many regicides. When Geralt encounters him in The Witcher 2 , he can either kill him or let him escape. Once again, this is one of the best character moments for Geralt, where he stands at the crossroads of loyalty—to Foltest or to Witchers.

Killing Letho vs. setting him free

Killing Letho is the most straightforward consequence. Geralt ends the mastermind of kingslaying. This results in his complete absence from The Witcher 3 , which is a horrible outcome. Letho is a loaded, deep, and mysterious character. The best option is to save him.

Saving him has him reappear during one of the many contracts Geralt takes on in Wild Hunt . While investigating a haunted mansion, Geralt notices traps and meticulous witcher-like planning and discovers Letho hiding nearby. You can then go down a fantastic questline with Letho—Ghosts of the Past—and experience the true side of his character.

In the end, Geralt can send Letho to Kaer’Morhen, where he’ll be available as an NPC and much-needed help during the Wild Hunt’s siege.

Every Witcher Who Dies In The Games

  • Witchers like Geralt are not the only superhuman monster hunters in The Witcher games - there are others who play significant roles.
  • The player's choices can lead to the death of many of these characters, which reflects the dwindling state of the order of witchers.
  • The deaths of these characters weigh heavily on Geralt's conscience as he navigates the bleak world of The Witcher.

The Witcher games are a beloved series with a cast of unforgettable characters. Although witcher Geralt of Rivia is the protagonist, he is far from the only superhuman monster hunter that players encounter. Even if the order is dwindling—and players keep encountering either corpses or mentions of dead witchers as they proceed through the games—there are still a handful of witchers who show up throughout Geralt’s adventures.

The 23 Strongest Witchers, Ranked

These characters, however, are not all safe from danger. Depending on the player’s choices , many of them can perish during the Witcher games, and one of them cannot be saved at all. Thus, each death weaves the tale of an order that is already on the brink of extinction and hangs heavily on Geralt’s conscience as the player traverses the bleak and engaging world.

This list contains spoilers!

Berengar - The Witcher

The hateful witcher who asks for a duel, the witcher.

Platform(s) PC

Released October 30, 2007

Developer(s) CD Projekt Red

Publisher(s) CD Projekt, Atari

Berengar is from the School of the Wolf, just like Geralt. The two of them reunite and end up working together for a time. However, Berengar eventually explains he blames witchers for ruining his life and thus harbors deep resentment towards his former colleagues .

This comes to a head with Berengar challenging Geralt to a duel. If the player chooses to spare the hateful witcher, Berengar becomes an ally during the final battle with Azar Javed. If the player instead opts for the battle to the death, Berengar is slain by Geralt, adding another dead witcher to the protagonist’s conscience.

Letho of Gulet - The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

The big bad who has nothing personal against the player, the witcher 2.

Platform(s) Xbox 360, PC, macOS, Linux

Released May 17, 2011

Publisher(s) CD Projekt Red

The titular kingslayer from The Witcher 2 , Letho is an integral part of the game’s plot: his actions are what drive the majority of the plot and serve as a final boss . Fans of the novels also might recognize him as one of the witchers who fought the Wild Hunt alongside Geralt prior to the franchise's timeline. Thus, to say Letho of Gulet is important to The Witcher ’s lore would be an understatement.

Players finally catch up to Letho in Loc Muinne and may choose to spare him after sharing a bottle of vodka. If they choose to fight him, however, they are treated to the final confrontation against this formidable witcher, ending his life once and for all.

Jad Karadin - The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The former assassin marked for revenge, the witcher 3: wild hunt.

Franchise The Witcher

Released May 19, 2015

Players only meet Jad Karadin if they choose to pursue a sidequest offered by Lambert, a fellow witcher and close friend of Geralt. Lambert wants revenge on Jad, who is a retired witcher from the School of the Cat, and led a band of assassins who killed Aiden, another witcher and close friend to Lambert.

As is the case with many of The Witcher 3 quests, nothing is as simple as it sounds, and players can potentially spare Jad, much to Lambert’s anger. However, if players decide to support revenge, they will start a fight that ends with Jad’s demise.

Gaetan - The The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The witcher who lost his temper after being betrayed.

Another witcher from the School of the Cat, Gaetan’s fate is tied up to a sidequest, “Where the Cat and Wolf Play…”. The quest starts with a village where everyone was murdered, with Geralt at first assuming it was the work of a monster. However, players soon learn ill-tempered Gaetan is the real culprit.

The Witcher: 9 Characters Killed By Geralt

After tracking him down, Gaetan explains the villagers had tried to kill him first, cheating him out of his payment and ambushing him in a barn. If the player decides this is not justification enough , they are treated to a boss fight against the tough witcher, who ends up succumbing to Geralt’s blade.

Vesemir - The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Mentor and leader of the school of the world who dies protecting who he loves.

One of the most tragic deaths of all the games, Vesemir is the one witcher that cannot be saved, regardless of the player’s actions. Mentor to both Ciri and Geralt , Vesemir is one of the closest allies and friends of both characters, as well as the leader and de facto leader of the School of the Wolf and Kaer Morhen.

Although he briefly appears in the first game, his death comes later in The Witcher 3 , as players rally their allies to defend Kaer Mohren from the Wild Hunt. As Imlerith, one of their foes’ generals, closes on Ciri, Vesemir heroically stabs him in the side, only to be killed by the armored elf. His passing is undoubtedly one of the most heartbreaking moments in the series for Geralt, Ciri, all surviving witchers, and many fans.

Ciri - The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The child of destiny who needs encouragement to survive.

Although not undergoing the mutations that would make her an official witcher, Ciri is Geralt’s ward and was adopted and trained by the School of the Wolf. Perhaps one of the most powerful of all characters in her universe, due to her Elder Blood, Ciri is instrumental in the overarching plot of the series, as well as one of Geralt’s main motivations.

Ciri is the only one who can stop the White Frost, and her confrontation with the supernatural threat serves as the ending of the entire series. If players choose certain dialogue options throughout the game, she will be filled with self-doubt and ultimately perish during the battle. Along with Vesemir’s, hers is one of the most tragic deaths, even more so, perhaps, as it is entirely preventable.

Geralt of Rivia - The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The titular witcher and hero might perish after losing the person he loves the most.

The protagonist of all three games and the vast majority of source material, Geralt of Rivia is the single most important witcher for players and many fans. With the series emphasizing the bleak and dark fantasy setting, as well as giving weight to player choice, it is no surprise that there is a possible ending where it is heavily hinted that Geralt finally meets his end .

For this scenario to happen, players must have chosen the dialogue options that result in Ciri dying. Without his foster child and main motivator, Geralt decides to seek vengeance on Weavess. Aided by a werewolf, an epic fight ensues, with Geralt succeeding in recovering Ciri's medallion and slaying the crone. Players are, however, left with a scene in which Geralt is overcome by grief while a horde of monsters close in, hinting this to be his final stand, in a bittersweet moment that lingers in many players who experienced this outcome.
