Indonesia launches second Klewang-class 63-meter stealth trimaran fast attack craft

The ship was built as a replacement to the first ship of the class, the Klewang (625), which was destroyed by a fire before it was commissioned to the TNI-AL in 2012. Due to experience with the destruction of the Klewang, North Sea Boats have made improvements in the ship design and materials used for construction, which now feature carbon fiber composite that is said to be fire resistant. The use of composite materials for the hull construction allows for a high specific strength, light weight, and excellent fatigue-resistance and corrosion-resistance. The ship is 63 meters long, has a maximum width of 16 meters, a displacement of 245 tons, and a crew of 30 officers and sailors. It is powered by four 1,800-horsepower MAP V12 diesel engines, allowing a speed of more than 28 knots, a cruising speed of 16 knots, and a maximum range of 2,000 nautical miles at 16 knots. In 2019, PT Lundin and Saab entered an agreement to supply the combat systems, sensors and weapons for the original boat, but it remains to be seen if this would continue with the second ship of the class. At the moment, it was announced the ship would be armed with a 30mm autocannon, and 12.7mm heavy machine guns, and will have an 11-meter rigid-hull inflatable boat (RHIB) as standard equipment. Special operations outlook 2019 digital edition is here, indonesia launches first klewang-class large trimaran missile boat.

By Mrityunjoy Mazumdar - September 4, 2012

Klewang trimaran FAC

KRI Klewang in the water. This radical looking trimaran – built completely from carbon composites in the village of Katak near Banyuwangi – is the first such vessel to be built in a developing country. The shipbuilder adapted the design and manufacturing methods to suit the skill sets of the local labor force in Banyuwangi, albeit with expatriate supervisors. Klewang’s design owes something to a 24-meter high-speed trimaran world record holder designed by New Zealand’s LOMOcean Design. Photo by Agus Suparto/ North Sea Boats

Indonesia’s North Sea Boats (also known as PT Lundin Industry Invest) launched the first of four new Klewang-class trimaran missile boats for the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) on Aug. 31, 2012 at its Banyuwangi facility.

The 63-meter long, wave piercing trimaran, also known as the X3K, is built of composites using infused vinylester carbon fiber-cored sandwich materials for light weight, strength, and good corrosion resistance, as well as low-observability from reduced signatures. It also has an integrated mast system.

The trimaran project started about 5 years ago, according to John Lundin, CEO of North Sea Boats. Lundin, who comes from a family of shipbuilders in Sweden, moved to Indonesia several years ago to set up businesses including North Sea Boats, which was started in 2003.

KRI Klewang moved from building shed

The high tech Klewang being moved from its building hall to the water using not so high tech yet functional technology a day before launching on Aug. 30, 2012. The ship was moved outside its building hall using inflatable air bags and a small bulldozer as well as lots of muscle power. The mast was added to the superstructure after the ship was moved out of the building hall. Photo by Banuwangai via Flickr.com/

The Klewang-class trimaran was designed in partnership with New Zealand based naval architects LOMOcean Design Ltd. over a period of 24 months. The X3K concept draws from the LOMOcean Design’s 24-meter Earthrace (later Ady Gil), holder of the record for the fastest circumnavigation of the globe by a power boat. Construction of the Klewang took about two-and-a-half years.

The X3K has been designed to Germanischer Lloyd structural design rules. In particular, the structural design and approval methodologies were tailored specifically for the unusual geometry of a large, wave-piercing trimaran. The ship has been designed to operate in sea states with 6-meter high waves.

What is remarkable about this project is that this is the first time such an advanced ship has been produced in a developing country. North Sea Boats says the use of carbon foam sandwich composites on this scale in naval application is “unprecedented” outside of Scandinavia and is representative of the current state of the art in both maritime composites structural engineering and production technology. A large portion of the materials were supplied by Gurit, through their marine division in New Zealand,  SP – High Modulus. While some of the Gurit core came from China, the carbon material was sourced from various countries.

Not having a highly skilled local labor force, NSB adopted the design and production technology to match locally available labor skill levels. For instance, the ship uses a large number of flat panels and high volume vacuum infusion systems and CNC milling to mitigate risks and ensure requisite production quality and repeatability.

Klewang has an overall length of 63 meters, a waterline length of 61 meters, a beam of 16 meters, and a draft of 1.2 meters at a displacement of 219 tonnes.

Klewang stern ramp

CGI of the X3K showing the ramp for launching and recovering the 11-meter RHIB. The missiles will be housed in the uppermost box-like section of the aft superstructure. A CIWS and a fire control director are also seen.

The ship is powered by four MJP 550 waterjets – two located on the outriggers and two on the center hull – driven by four MAN V12 engines rated at 1800 horsepower each. Top speed is as much as 35 knots, although cruising speed is 22 knots. Range is in excess of 2000 nautical miles at 16 knots.

Internally, the ship has three decks. Accommodation is provided for up to twenty-nine, including a special forces team that can deploy using a ramp-launched 11-meter X2K high speed RHIB capable of 50 knots.

NSB says that the exact configuration of the combat system is still classified, but did disclose that Klewang will have a “turn-key system’ delivered by CSOC and CPMIEC China, including a rapid fire close in weapons system (CIWS), combat control and missile systems.”

It is widely speculated that at least four and possibly eight C-705 anti- ship missiles with a range of 120 kilometers will be fitted in enclosed launchers on the superstructure. Available graphics show a superstructure-mounted director and a small caliber CIWS in a stealthy turret similar to weapons fitted on China’s Type 022 missile catamarans.

Klewang Fast Missile Trimaran Launching

NSB adds that other antiship weapons such as Penguin, Exocet and larger caliber guns up to 57 mm can be mounted on the superstructure without affecting stability.

Klewang will undergo additional outfitting for the next four weeks, after which extensive sea trials and tests will commence in October. Final operational clearance is expected sometime in 2013.

NSB is under contract to deliver four of these trimarans by 2014. However, NSB officials declined to comment on the status of the other three ships.

Indonesian media report that each ship costs about Rp 114 billion ($12.5 million), although this is very likely the cost of the ship less combat systems. NSB won’t comment on this either. According to TNI AL Admiral Sayid Anwar, the Klewang , which is to be based in Surabaya with the service’s Eastern Fleet, is the first large composite warship in the Indonesian Navy.

Along with the Klewang -class trimarans, Indonesia is also pursuing several indigenous programs for a series of 40-meter and 60-meter fast missile boats known locally as kapal cepat rudal (KCR). PT Palindo has delivered two Clurit-class KCR 40 missile boats, and is constructing one if not two more. PT PAL in Surabaya has an order for three larger 60-meter KCR 60-class missile boats. However, being that the project is still at a design stage, PT PAL has not yet announced delivery dates.

These programs are part of Indonesia’s strategic drive to build up a minimum essential force structure for its armed forces by 2024 while simultaneously developing and growing the country’s indigenous defense industry.

Indonesia trimaran KRI Golok

The Republic of Indonesia Navy launched a one of a kind trimaran warship in a ceremony on August 21.

The launching and naming ceremony for the ship, which will be known as KRI Golok-688, took place at PT Lundin’s Banyuwangi, East Java, shipyard.

Referred to as a fast missile ship by the Indonesian Navy, Golok is actually the second in its class. The first one, KRI Klewang, was launched in 2012 and was completely destroyed in a fire outbreak just four weeks after its launch.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Indonesia’s Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Yudo Margono said KRI Golok-688 was the country’s first ship made of composite materials, benefitting from a lighter weight, excellent fatigue resistance and improved corrosion resistance.

kri trimaran

According to shipbuilder’s specifications, KRI Golok has a length of 63 meters, and a displacement of 245 tons. Powered by four engines, the ship has stated maximum speed of 28 knots and a crew of 25. The warship is armed with a 30 mm cannon and 12.7 mm guns.

Admiral Yudo Margono added that the launch of the trimaran had a strategic meaning for PT. Lundin, solidifying the shipbuilder’s position as one of the national defense companies that has successfully developed an indigenous warship design, thereby reducing Indonesia’s dependence on other countries.

PT Lundin describes the fast attack craft as a modern “wave piercing” trimaran design, with stealth design characteristics, thanks to reduced radar, infra-red, acoustic and magnetic signatures.

This is not the first peculiar vessel design the company has come up with. Earlier this year, the company unveiled a “tank boat” – an 18-meter foil assisted catamaran with an integrated Cockerill HP 105mm turret.

VESSEL REVIEW | Golok – Indonesian Navy’s locally built stealth attack trimaran

kri trimaran

Indonesian state-owned shipbuilder Lundin Industry Invest has delivered a new fast attack trimaran craft to the Indonesian Navy.

The future KRI Golok , named after a traditional Indonesian bladed weapon, is a Klewang-class stealth trimaran designed according to DNV’s Patrol Boat (Hull) rules. The ship has an LOA of 62.53 metres, a beam of 16 metres, a draught of 1.2 metres, and a displacement of 245 tonnes.

Four MAN V12 diesel engines that each produce 1,350 kW drive a quartet of Marine Jet Power MJP 550 waterjets to propel Golok to a maximum speed of 28 knots and a cruising speed of 16 knots. At the latter speed setting, the trimaran can sail up to 3,700 kilometres in between refuelings.

The vessel will be used mainly in the precision strike role wherein it will launch anti-ship missiles against targets up to 35 kilometres away. A 30-millimetre close-in weapon system (CIWS) will also be available for point defence against low-flying aircraft and anti-ship missiles.

The wave-piercing trimaran design helps reduce pitching and rolling, making the ship a highly stable weapons platform even under adverse weather conditions. The low-observable hull design meanwhile incorporates features that can minimise the possibility of detection by reducing the ship’s radar, infrared, acoustic, and magnetic signatures.

Stealth properties are further improved as there are no reverse-angle bow overhangs to reflect radar signals, as seen on conventional hull forms. Also, all weaponry will be discreetly concealed or shaped to meld into the superstructure profile.

Other missions will include patrols of waters within Indonesia’s exclusive economic zone, anti-piracy, search and rescue (SAR), and surveillance.

Up to 29 crewmembers and additional personnel can be accommodated on board. The additional personnel may include special operations forces, as the trimaran was also designed to be operated in the special operations insertion and extraction roles. For carrying out such missions, the vessel is equipped with a launch and recovery system for one 11-metre rigid inflatable boat (RIB). The wide decks also provide ample space for a utility and surveillance helicopter to augment the ship’s patrol capability.

The vessel’s electrical power is supplied by three 135kW generator sets. The firefighting equipment consists of a Coldcut COBRA water mist system, a fixed FiFi2 CO2 system in the engine compartments, and handheld extinguishers. In the event of an evacuation, liferafts are available on board.

Golok is the second and final Klewang-class trimaran to be built, as well as the only example of the class currently in existence after the class lead ship, KRI Klewang , was destroyed by fire while it was still undergoing fitting out in September 2012. The new trimaran is undergoing further testing, though its date of delivery to the navy has not yet been announced.

Kapal Trimaran

[1] “The Dispersal of Austronesian Boat Forms in the Indian Ocean” – Waruno Mahdi (1999), “Jump up to” Edwin B. Doran.

[2] the cruising multihull – camden,  – international marine.  – understanding boat design, 4th edition, ted brewer..

kri trimaran

[3] USN Archived; Littoral Combat Ship Class – LCS. 2015.

Indonesian Navy welcomes new Trimaran FAC & Hospital ship

The indonesian navy (tni al) commissioned the trimaran-shaped klewang-class fast attack craft, kri golok (688), and the hospital ship, dr.wahidin sudirohusodo (991), on friday at madura koarmada pier ii in surabaya (14 january)..

Tayfun Ozberk 16 Jan 2022

Both ships were built at Indonesian shipyards by national means as part of the Indonesian defense industry’s indigenous production trend; KRI Golok-688 was built by PT Lundin Industry Invest, while KRI Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo-991 was built by PT Indonesian PAL.

Admiral Yudo Morgono, Chief of the Indonesian Navy, was the event’s chief guest. Speaking at the event , Admiral Morgono expressed his excitement for the new fast-attack craft, KRI Golok, saying, “This type of ship is not only important to support naval operations as part of the task force and the Navy Fleet, but is a tangible manifestation of the Navy’s commitment to modernizing defense equipment in humanitarian operations.”

He also emphasized the significance of the new hospital ship by highlighting the region’s vulnerability to natural disasters as a result of geographical peculiarities:

“Indonesia’s position in the ring of fire makes Indonesia highly vulnerable to various types of natural disasters, while Indonesia’s geographical condition as an archipelagic country requires the ability to project health services, humanitarian assistance, and disaster management from one island to another across the waters.” Admiral Yudo Morgono, Chief of the Indonesian Navy

About KRI Golok (688):

Indonesian Navy welcomes new trimaran FAC & Hospital ship

KRI Golok-688 is a Klewang-class fast attack vessel designed by PT Lundin Industry Invest. It is a stealthy, wave-piercing carbon trimaran vessel. The class’ lead ship, KRI Klewang, was destroyed in a deadly fire in 2012, leaving KRI Golok as the lone ship in the class.

PT Lundin launched KRI Golok-688 for the Indonesian Navy on 21 August 2021. She has a total length (Loa) of 62.53 meters, a width of 16 meters, a ship height of 18.7 meters, and a weight of 53.1 tons (ed. note: PT Lundin mentions a displacement of 245 tons). The maximum speed of 28 knots, cruising speed of 16 knots. The vessel is armed with a 30 mm cannon and 12.7 mm gun and is capable of carrying 25 crew members.

The Golok is a trimaran ship with a pointed forward shape, making it easy to execute hit-and-run tactics and maneuver in the littoral waters of the archipelago’s seas.

Because the hull is made of carbon fiber composite, the radar cross-section is reduced, making this ship harder to detect by enemy radar. In terms of strength and weight, this carbon fiber composite trumps steel. Additionally, this material can minimize bulk, be anti-rust and anti-dent, boost soundproofing, and reduce vibration or waves.

About KRI Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo (991):

Indonesian Navy welcomes new trimaran FAC & Hospital ship

Launched by the Indonesian shipyard PT PAL on 07 January 2021 , KRI Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo (991) is an Indonesian Navy hospital ship named after Indonesian national hero Wahidin Soedirohoesodo (1852-1917). He was a doctor and education reformer in the Dutch East Indies who co-founded the Javanese self-improvement society Budi Utomo.

The design of the ship is based on the existing Makassar-class of Landing Platform Dock (LPD).

She is 124 meters long, 21.8 meters wide with a displacement of 7,290 tons. It has a maximum speed of 18 knots, cruising speed of 14 knots, and economic speed of 12 knots. KRI Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo has an endurance of up to 30 days at sea with a range of 10,000 nautical miles. With 120 crew and 66 medical personnel, this ship is capable of carrying out operational missions equivalent to a type C hospital.

This capability is supported by outpatient polyclinic facilities (general, eye, dental, etc.), emergency room, operating room, inpatient room, and radiology unit. Mobility for carrying out medical evacuation missions is also supported by the ability to transport medical helicopters, ambulance boats, and LCVPs.

Kri golok 688 – overview of the new fast attack craft of the indonesian navy.

Currently, KRI Golok 688 is in the refinement stage so that it can be used as soon as possible by the Indonesian Navy with perfect conditions.

KRI Golok 688 – a fast attack craft built for the Indonesian Navy was launched on August 21, 2021. The ship is expected to be a replacement for the KRI Klewang that burned down in 2012. According to Indonesian shipbuilder PT Lundin, the KRI Golok will be equipped with advanced weapons and specifications that qualify as a missile warship for the Indonesian Navy and have the technology as a stealth ship.

According to a statement from the Indonesian Navy, the fast attack ship has a displacement of about 245 tons, a length of 62.53 m, a beam of 16 m, and a draft of 1.2 m. Similar to Klewang, Golok is equipped with 4 × MAN V12 diesels and 4 × MJP 550 waterjets. This craft has a top speed of 28 knots and a cruising speed of 16 knots.

KRI Golok 688

The design and body of the KRI Golok 688 is similar to the previous KRI Klewang 625. The Golok is a trimaran ship with a pointed forward design, which made it easy to execute hit and run tactics and maneuver in the waters of the archipelago.

The material of the hull is made of carbon fiber composite which makes this ship difficult to detect by enemy radar. This carbon fiber composite is stronger and lighter than steel. In addition, this material can also reduce the mass of objects, anti-rust, anti-dent, improve soundproofing, and vibration or waves.

This ship can carry 25 special forces and can also be used for fast attacks and is equipped with advanced weaponry. The weapons are hidden in the hull of the ship. The expected armaments are: missiles, a 30 mm cannon and a 12.7 mm gun, as well as a high-speed RHIB ship of 11 m.

KRI Klewang – First Stealthy Trimaran Patrol Vessel for the Indonesian Navy

kri trimaran

North Sea Boats launched the first of four advanced, stealthy, 63 meter trimaran patrol boats for the Indonesian Navy on August 31, 2012. Following the completion, extensive sea trials and testing commencing next month, the KRI KLEWANG is is expected to be fully operational 2013. All four vessels are scheduled for delivery by 2014.

Unfortunately, Klewang was destroyed by a fire tree weeks after its launching, while moored at the naval port in Banyuwangi, East Java for maintenance. No casualties have been reported but the new vessel was lost.

The new vessel to be named KRI Klewang (after a traditional Indonesian single edged sword) was launched at Banyuwagni, in Indonesia. Following the official launching the vessel will be fitted with mission systems and weapons, including a remotely controlled gun turret and anti-ship missiles. The four vessels are built at the PT Lundin shipyard in East Java.

[ismember]The ship designer, New Zealand based LOMOcean employed the wave-piercer trimaran hull form, providing external “Stealth” geometry and additional features intended to reduce detection. This hull offers high stability and shallow draft (only 1.2 meters), preparing the vessel for its main mission – patrolling the littorals.

The hull shape is intended to permit high speeds to be maintained and thus maximize crew operational capability in the short, steep seas characteristic of the coastline around the Indonesian Archipelago. The design borrows elements from previous trimarans from the same designer, including the 24m Earthrace (later Ady Gil), holder of the record for the fastest circumnavigation of the globe by a power boat. The vessel is constructed exclusively of infused vinylester carbon fibre cored sandwich materials for all structural elements. According to the builder, Klewang represents the first use of these composite materials in such a large scale, with a military vessel. However, The fire which razed Klewang in two hours burning the boat down to the waterline should have the shipbuilder and Indonesian navy question the survivability of this class of boat and suitability of its supposedly fire retardant composite-made construction for military use (the boat is made of PVC, Carbon Fiber and other composites). Naval vessels are commonly made of steel, considered more durable to damage and fire. Smaller boats are also made of aluminium  which has also proved more vulnerable to fire.

As laminated carbon fibre has a density nearly half that of aluminium alloys, the new construction method offers reduced weight and reduced maintenance, since carbon composites do not corrode as metals, and exhibit extremely high fatigue limits. Moreover, the hull and superstructure can be tailored to minimize radar cross section, with finishing providing true flat panel geometry and extremely high geometrical accuracy, attained without the seams typical conventional assembly. The composite structure has no magnetic signature, and its thermal and acoustic signatures are also reduced.

The underwater sections have been optimized for extended range at fast patrol speeds; the length, transverse and longitudinal positions and immersion of each of the three hulls have been carefully tailored for least resistance using both slender body analysis and towing tank testing.

[wzslider autoplay=”true” info=”true”][/ismember]

The vessel is powered by four MAN V12 diesel engines, driving multiple MJP 550 water jets, located on the three for maximum propulsive thrust and maneuverability. The vessel can develop a ‘sprinting’ maximum speed of 35 knots. Cruising speed is 16 knots and the stated operational range is over 2000 nautical miles.

The Klewang is armed with concealed gun turret, missile launchers and small arms posts. Trimarans offer very stable weapons platforms, and can carry various Missile systems; including Type 705 (up to 8), RBS15, Penguin or Exocet, and 40-57mm Naval Guns, or a CIWC (Close In Weapon System). These can be mounted high on the superstructure, giving better range and firing arc. Sensors can also be installed high up without concerns for stability. This first ship will carry a turnkey system delivered by CSOC and CPMIEC China, including rapid fire CIWS, combat control and missile systems. The exact configuration of this system is still classified.

Accommodation is provided for a complement of twenty nine (officers and crew) on three internal decks (including bridge and combat control centre), with facilities and equipment also provided for deployment of special forces troops, including an 11m high speed 50 knot RIB, also manufactured and supplied by North Sea Boats.

The Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) is looking forward to receiving a fast missile attack trimaran, with the future KRI Golok launched in Indonesia by shipbuilder PT Lundin on 21 August.

A first version of the design, KRI Klewang (625), was destroyed by fire a month after being launched in August 2012, so the advent of Golok (with pennant number 688) marks a revival of this type that employs infused vinyl ester carbon fibre for the hull.

The sleek wave-piercing trimaran was launched at the shipyard of PT Lundin (also known as North Sea Boats) in Banyuwangi, East Java. Adm Yudo Margono,
