Tucano and kayaks

The Motor Yacht Tucano, which welcomes up to 18 guests in nine staterooms, is an expedition vessel specifically designed for deep exploration of the Brazilian Amazon. Thanks to a relatively small size, agile design, and shallow draft, Tucano Amazon river cruises leave the main tourist paths far behind.

Instead, the Tucano sails in uncharted waters and glides down the small tributaries woven through the rainforest. During your cruise, you may not see other boats or people for days at a time.

Excursions From Your Motor Yacht Tucano Brazil Cruise

The Tucano is the only vessel to explore the deepest parts of the Central Amazon Conservation Complex. The UNESCO World Heritage Site measures in at 15 million acres of uninhabited wilderness. This is one of the most diverse ecosystems globally and the best place to spot many monkey species. During a cruise on Tucano, you may be able to see Howler monkeys, spider monkeys, and tamarins. The itineraries offered on the Tucano are some of the most sophisticated and active.

There are four to five excursions from the boat on most days, supported by a fleet of small exploration crafts. Guests may select which activities they wish to participate in and may stay on the ship when they prefer. A naturist guide leads each excursion and will help you identify the animals and plants around you. On any given day, you may find yourself on a sunrise paddle through narrow streams, hiking on wilderness trails, visiting homesteading families, or taking an after-dark walk to see night-blooming flowers and caimans.

Life Aboard During a Tucano Amazon River Cruise

Despite the small group size, the Motor Yacht Tucano is surprisingly spacious. The crew understands that travelers are keen to see wildlife up close, and there are plenty of spots to do just that. A large salon sits at the bow of the ship. This room is lined with oversized windows, which allow you to appreciate the sights and sounds of the river without braving the sun. Outside, a large observation deck, complete with a canopy, tops the ship and invites you to sit and watch the birds that soar over the river.

On the middle deck, a large balcony makes up the front of the ship. This is an excellent spot to see dolphins as you glide down the river. Wherever you opt to spend your time, you will find elegant décor. The Tucano is decorated in the style of a 19th-century steamship and features artwork showcasing nature and geography. In the dining room, you will dine on fresh, wholesome, locally-sourced meals. The ship’s chefs are happy to create dishes for vegetarian and other special diets.

Responsible, Sustainable Tourism

As the most sustainable boat in the Amazon, the Tucano has a range of innovations to reduce exhaust emissions, limit the use of fossil fuels, and minimize carbon footprint. Rather than continuously relying on diesel generators, a mix of solar-electric and solar-thermal systems power many of the ship’s amenities.

Even the excursion vessels are solar-powered. The Tucano also features a unique water-heating system, which uses the sun to heat water during the bulk of the day. The Tucano team also requests that travelers partner together to reduce energy usage and the impact made on the Amazonian ecosystem.

From leaping off the swim deck into some of the cleanest water in the world to scouting through flooded grasslands, both the five- and seven-day Tucano Amazon river cruises offer unique experiences for active travelers.

Embarkation

AM : This day we embark on the Motor Yacht Tucano in Manaus, Brasil. We depart on the Rio Negro and as the vessel glides upstream we will have our first talk about Amazon environments. By late afternoon we enter one of the world’s largest river island systems, the Anavilhanas Archipelago. The boat will weave along a winding channel with rainforest on both sides in a riot of brilliant vegetation.

PM : Weather permitting, we will go for a launch excursion in the gnarled and dense flooded forest along the river’s edge. We may see some Squirrel Monkeys and we may hear the other-worldly growls of Howler Monkeys echoing through the primitive rainforest. The Amazon has one of the greatest collections of birds in the world and we are sure to see some of these brightly colored jewels perched in the treetops.

We return to the M/Y Tucano for hors d’oeuvres on the observation deck and a toast to the rainforest sunset. Following dinner, we will embark on our launches in search of nocturnal creatures such as the Caiman, the Amazon’s crocodilians. We may also see one of the large night birds such as a Great Potoo, with its bulging eyes and large mouth, adapted to swallow the huge Mariposa Moths.

Tucano's 5-Day Cruise Itinerary Day One - Spotting a Squirrel Monkey.

Anavilhanas

AM : Shortly after sunrise this morning we explore the Anavilhanas Archipelago, a reserve that includes the world’s largest system of river islands and also areas of tall dense rainforest. Here we will see the strange environment called the igapó, the black water flooded forest, where dense forests grow right out of the dark water of the Rio Negro. Mid-morning we return to the vessel for a hearty Brazilian breakfast. After some time to relax, weather permitting, we will disembark in mid-morning and dividing into very small groups we will go for a walk in the type of rainforest known as the terra firma. Here we have a good chance to see the markings, if not the animals themselves, of some of the Amazon’s great mammals like peccaries (wild pigs) or even a jaguar.

PM : Around mid-day, we return to the vessel for lunch and a siesta. In the afternoon we will excursion in our launches along the edges of the dense forest and listen to the sunset chorus of birds, howler monkeys, and frogs. Weather permitting, tonight we will have an excursion to spot caiman (the Amazon’s crocodiles) and other nocturnal creatures. We very often see arboreal porcupines or sloths scrambling high in the limbs.

Tucano's 5-Day Cruise Itinerary Day Two - Top Deck Views.

AM : Today we will voyage to the west side of the Rio Negro and continue to scout in our launches and walk in the forest. We will explore, according to the weather and water depth, areas rarely visited by anyone else.

PM : Tonight the M/Y Tucano goes downstream, and river depth permitting, will enter an east bank affluent of the Rio Negro and explore on deep into the rainforest on this small river. After our nocturnal exploration of the rainforest in our launches we return to the Tucano for “Caipirinha Night” and perhaps try a bit of samba on the top deck.

Tucano's 5-Day Cruise Itinerary Day Three - Kayaking along the river.

Rio Negro & Manaus

AM : We begin the day with a dawn excursion hunting for wakening wildlife followed by a full Brazilian breakfast. We will then go one last time into the forest.

PM : In the mid-afternoon, we will begin to journey downstream to arrive late in the day at the “Encontro das Aguas” - a stark several mile long lines where two of the world’s largest rivers, the Amazon and the Rio Negro, join in a turbulent maelstrom. Here the dark water of the Negro runs beside the opaque brown water of the Amazon.

At sunset, the M/Y Tucano will once again turn her bows upstream on the Rio Negro and journey to our overnight anchorage north of the City of Manaus. As we pass in front of Manaus, we will marvel at the scale of one of the world’s largest and most vibrant port cities over a thousand miles from the sea. Tonight we will have a farewell dinner and prepare for an early departure in the morning.

Tucano's 5-Day Cruise Itinerary Day Four - Onboard Lectures.

Disembarkation

AM : Early this morning, after a hearty breakfast, all guests disembark from the M/Y Tucano.

Tucano's 5-Day Cruise Itinerary Day Five - Disembarkation.

7 Day - Voyage to the Heart of the Amazon

itinerary map

AM : Early this morning all guests board the vessel the Motor Yacht Tucano and depart upstream on the Rio Negro. We will cruise through the world’s largest river island system, the Anavilhanas Archipelago. From the observation deck, we scan the magnificent tangle of vegetation at the water’s edge.

PM : By mid-afternoon, the vessel has gone beyond the frontier of settlement and entered a wilderness area. Both shores are covered by dense rainforest. Though we cannot predict what we will see, we likely observe pink river dolphins, primates, and a large collection of exotic birds. Most certainly we will be treated to magnificent forest vistas and the spectacular trees themselves. In the late afternoon, we embark on the launches and hunt for wildlife. We may also go for a swim in some of the world’s most clean and refreshing water.

Tucano's 7-Day Cruise Itinerary Day One - Kayaking in the Amazon Rainforest.

Kayaking, Swimming and Wildlife Exploration

AM : Early this morning we divide into small groups and explore the rainforest in our launches or kayaks, each group with a naturalist guide. We should hear and perhaps see howler monkeys and we should hear a morning serenade of toucans. After breakfast, we go for a walk in the forest where we will get a good start on understanding Amazon ecology.

PM : Around midday, we return for lunch and the vessel will get underway, perhaps stopping at a place to swim. In the late afternoon, we will again explore the forest in our launches and listen to the sunset chorus of birds, frogs, and howler monkeys.

Tucano's 7-Day Cruise Itinerary Day Two - Kayaking in the Amazon Rainforest.

Rainforest Walk

AM : This morning there will be an early exploration of the waking forest. We will keep our eyes open for sloths... on most trips we see them often. We return for breakfast followed by either a walk in the forest or an excursion in the launches.

PM : M/Y Tucano will travel during the middle of the day and we stop in the afternoon for an excursion. Tonight the vessel may travel a bit more as we marvel at the night sky crowded with stars.

Tucano's 7-Day Cruise Itinerary Day Three - Squirrel Monkey Sighting.

Wildlife Exploration & Night Excursion

AM : After our morning excursions The M/Y Tucano will navigate along the heavily forested shore, scouting for wildlife. We may stop for a visit at a settler’s home carved out of the forest.

PM : In the early afternoon, we will be near an extraordinary river called the Rio Jaueperi. We will scout along the shoreline for some of the extraordinary creatures found only in this unique environment. Weather permitting, we will have a night excursion to observe nocturnal creatures.

Tucano's 7-Day Cruise Itinerary Day Four - Views from the top deck.

AM : Today we will voyage to the west side of the Rio Negro and continue to scout in our launches and walk in the forest. Weather and water depth permitting, we will explore areas rarely visited by anyone else.

PM : Tonight the M/Y Tucano goes downstream and will enter an east bank affluent of the Rio Negro and explore deep into the rainforest on this small river. After our nocturnal exploration of the rainforest in our launches we return to the Tucano for “Caipirinha Night” and perhaps try a bit of samba on the top deck.

Tucano's 7-Day Cruise Itinerary Day Five - Sunset on the Amazon River.

Meeting of the Waters

AM : We begin the day with a dawn excursion hunting for wakening wildlife followed by a full Brasilian breakfast. We will then go one last time into the forest.

PM : In the mid-afternoon, we will begin to journey downstream. We should arrive late in the day at the “Encontro das Aguas” (Meeting of the Waters) - a stark, several-mile-long line where two of the world’s largest rivers, the Amazon and the Rio Negro, join in a turbulent maelstrom. Here the dark water of the Negro runs beside the opaque brown water of the Amazon. Motor Yacht Tucano on an Amazon River Cruise

Arrange a private Amazon voyage just for your small group or family!

Our traveling companions in the Amazon on the Motor Yacht Tucano.

There are a number of reasons why a private charter is an ideal way for a small group to experience the Amazon:

Thoughtful and Essential Itineraries: The itineraries of our group programs are active, meaningful and very authentic experiences that can vary in length from four to seven nights. Starting in Manaus, Brasil, our cruises explore the two most important rivers in the Amazon: The Rio Negro and the Amazon River itself.

Minimum Group Size is Small: While the Motor Yacht Tucano is a large and comfortable vessel, it was designed to offer travelers all the advantages of small group travel. We frequently have groups as small as 10 travelers or as many as 18. These small groups enable travelers to experience the fullness of the Amazon in an intimate and intensive way that larger groups simply cannot. Most private groups have no difficulty gathering the small number of people necessary to charter the Motor Yacht Tucano.

Only Your Travelers: Each group Amazon cruise is operated for one group only and no travelers from other groups are mixed into the cruise. Your will have the M/Y Tucano to yourselves which really makes for an intimate and still more meaningful experience.

Many Departure Dates to Choose From: We usually have a departure schedule written for up to 18 months into the future. Private charters can be arranged well in advance so that there is plenty of time to prepare for and promote a cruise.

Operationally, Our Cruises are Superior:

Our Amazon group Motor Yacht Tucano

Small Group Size:   Even though the Tucano is a big boat, it was designed for relatively small groups of up to eighteen participants. A small group size is really essential to observing wildlife. Large groups entail logistics that drive away wildlife and dilute personal contact with the guides. With a small group it is easier to communicate the magnificent detail of the flora and fauna of Amazonia.

Pristine Rainforests:  We operate in one of the least settled areas of the Amazon. Our trips take place in true wilderness which is rarely seen by other visitors. The trips are never routine. Some cruise vessels ply the same waters week after week, year after year, but we vary our itineraries to keep them interesting for the guests and the guides alike.

Highly Skilled Guides:   Our naturalists are some of the very best in the Amazon. They have the extensive knowledge of flora and fauna but also the culture of the Amazon settlers and of Brasil. For specialized tours, we can also bring with us well known scientists in almost any field to accompany the group.

We Are There!:   We play a vital role in the trips. All of the details of the trip, from the course of Tucano to how much salt is put in the food, are directly monitored by us. We do everything possible to make the expedition interesting and enjoyable to our guests.

What the trip is like.

The trip is rated Level 1+, Easy . There are shore excursions featuring nature walks and village visits, and river outings by skiff. It is appropriate for anyone in good health who is physically active.

Conditions along the Amazon River in Peru divide into two seasons: a high water season from December through May and a low water season that lasts from June until November. Cruising the Amazon in either season promises rich rewards with breathtaking opportunities to view and photograph magnificent plant and animal life unlike anywhere else on earth.

If seeing the glorious Amazon rainforest at its lushest and getting up close to lots of birds and mammals (and enjoying slightly cooler temperatures) sounds most attractive, then December to May might be your best choice. If jungle hikes and spotting exotic migratory birds perched on trees between flights across Amazonia appeals most to you, while still having the chance to see capuchin monkeys, kinkajou, and other mammals, and going on great fishing expeditions, you might be happier choosing the warmer, low water season.

Weather in this region of the Amazon remains generally warm with some rainfall even during low water season. In fact, despite being the "rainy" season, during the high water months, the Amazon only gets about 10% more rain than in the low water season. So, as you choose the time of your cruise on the Amazon River (in either season), we suggest you consider the following three key points:

  • Some rain will fall in whichever season you choose. This is the Amazon Rainforest.
  • You will see spectacular Amazon wildlife, birds and plant life any time of year on the Amazon.
  • In either season, you will definitely see the Amazon River's rare pink dolphins.

The Amazon basin is as lush and green as it is because it gets an abundance of rain -- 12 feet a year on average. In a typical year, the Amazon River rainforest experiences 200 rainy days, which means that there will be days of rain even in the low water season. However it rarely rains all day. Rain most often falls in passing cloudbursts, which allow the vessel to coordinate excursions accordingly. When it does rain, you are provided sturdy ponchos to ensure you stay extremely comfortable so you can focus on the astonishing Amazon jungle scenery.

High Water Season on the Amazon: December Through May

Peru's rainy season runs from December through May, which is summer and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. This is the relatively cooler and wetter season when the Amazon region receives more than half (60%) of its total annual rainfall. During the high water season, the average temperature is 86°F, only 12°F cooler than in the average low water season. Benefits of visiting Peru's Amazon at this time of year include the dramatic high water panorama. The Amazon Basin's rivers and streams rise about 23 feet higher than during the low water season. Aside from the striking visual effect, this also means that every river, creek, and lake is navigable. Thus, the ship's tenders are able to cruise further along the wildlife-rich waterways of Amazonia and bring guests up close to more plants and Amazon animals than during the low water season. Flooded waterways carry you significantly deeper by water into the Amazon jungle canopy, where the kaleidoscope of Amazon birds flutter about. Although the odds of sighting wildlife do not change significantly between the two seasons, you are likely to see more of some Amazon wildlife favorites such as monkeys, turtles, and caimans during the high water months. Enhanced navigation by water has a flip side -- areas to walk and trek become less accessible at this time of year. When you do find usable hiking trails, so will the mosquitoes that are more prevalent now than during the low water season. Fishing in the Amazon River is actually more limited during these high water months too, but you still have close to a 50/50 chance to reel in a memorable catch.

Low Water Season on the Amazon: June through November

Low water season in Amazonia coincides with winter in the Southern Hemisphere, from June to November. This is the warmer season on the Amazon River, with temperatures averaging about 98°F. Despite its name, the low water season still exhibits some heavy rains. A key difference between visiting the Amazon in low water season vs. high water season is you are able to access the jungle trails that get flooded from December to May, allowing you to follow your naturalists and local Amazonia guides deeper into the jungle by foot, and accompanied by fewer mosquitoes than during the high water season. Guests also tend to spot an even greater abundance of migratory birds in flight during the low water season. However, the trade-off at this time of year is that water levels on the Amazon River and its tributaries drop much lower from June to November, which means that many of the creeks and lakes that we visit by tender during the rainy season are now inaccessible. Lower water levels do offer a bonus: good fishing is 100% guaranteed, you even stand a fair chance to catch a piranha.

Amazon cruises bring you into close contact with nature and enhance the probability of spotting animals, yet nothing is guaranteed it is up to mother nature and chance sometimes but with luck and patience anything is possible. To date, few inventories of Pacaya-Samiria’s flora and fauna have been carried out. It is known, however, that the reserve provides critical habitat for the grey and pink river dolphins (Inia geoffrensis, Pteronura brasiliensis), Amazonian manatees (Trichechus inunguis), the black and spectacled caiman (Melanosuchus niger), giant South American Riverturtle (Podecnemis expansa), saddleback tamarin and many monkeys including the spider, capuchin, and squirrel species. A preliminary survey of birds has listed over 350 species, of the eight species of macaw recorded in Peru, five are found in the reserve. This protected area contains 85 lakes which are home to 250 species of fish and the largest variety of flora in Peru, including 847 different species of plants and trees (22 recorded species of orchids)

Tucano Amazon ship seen on its starboard side amid green trees in the foreground and background

The 19th century steamships that explored far into the interior reaches of the Amazon River had large, opening windows, a shallow draft, a broad beam for stability and a sense of style that today we would call elegance. In the Amazon, these same advantages are as true today as they were in the 1890s. The 18-guest Motor Yacht Tucano shares this classic style and is well-suited to the Amazon enabling travelers to voyage deep into the rainforest in style and comfort.

Tucano is not a luxury vessel but is comfortable, intimate, efficient and fun. Designed and built for Amazon river cruises, the Tucano began operating in 1997. The Tucano experience offers the classical elegance of a bygone era combined with the capability and the spirit of modern exploration.

Tucano Review

AdventureSmith Explorations’ Tucano review includes a detailed description of the Amazon riverboat including deck plans and a photo gallery. Our small ship cruise experts have been aboard nearly every first-class vessel in the Amazon. Please read our Tucano review below then contact our Amazon cruise experts to compare the Tucano with other small cruise ships  and riverboats offering  Amazon cruises , including private  charter cruises .

Choose the Tucano for a traditional river boat that goes deep into the Brazilian Amazon jungle. The M/Y Tucano has a wide beam, a flat bottom and a shallow draft. She draws only five feet, which enables her to explore remote Amazon rivers where most other vessels cannot navigate. At 80 feet long, the M/Y Tucano is a big boat with a very large interior space, but she routinely crosses the sand bars that cover the entrances of many rivers in Amazonia, and continues on for tens or hundreds of miles farther into the wilderness. She is able to explore the small meandering rivers where wildlife is abundant but which are closed to almost all other passenger vessels.

While the Tucano retains the appearance of a traditional riverboat, she was built using sophisticated equipment, materials and advanced construction techniques. From the electrical and water systems to the advanced propulsion and navigation systems, Tucano offers all of the convenience, security and comfort of a modern yacht. There are individual air-conditioning thermostats in every cabin as well as volume controls for the boat-wide sound system. The vessel has state-of-the-art communications and navigation equipment so that no matter how far into the world’s greatest wilderness the vessel may explore, there is still contact with the outside world.

Common Areas Aboard Tucano

Given the typical calmness of the Amazon’s rivers, Tucano is able to have three decks resulting in a quite large interior space. The M/Y Tucano has almost twice the interior volume as comparable vessels. This extra space goes into ample overhead ceilings, large cabins, full-size bathrooms and many comforts that would simply not be possible in a contemporary design. In 2018 the Tucano went under a substantial refit. The largest update was a conversion to opening glass walls in the salon creating an intimate experience for guests to experience the sounds of rainforest as they dine.

The cabins, Salon and main corridors are crafted of exquisite solid-wood raised paneling. The deep amber color of the varnished wood is accented by polished brass hardware found throughout the vessel. The walls are decorated with framed botanical prints as well as antique maps from the great era of exploration. Especially important is that the riverboat style allows the M/Y Tucano to have many large windows. Tucano has over 70 windows, all of which are three feet high and can be opened for passengers to enjoy the scent of Amazon blossoms. Every cabin has at least four view windows, which makes the vessel bright and airy.

The Salon of the Motor Yacht Tucano serves as the ship’s library and dining room. It is a good place to observe the forest, read or relax. From this large space, filled with windows and situated at the front of the boat, travelers can view the fantastic Amazon rainforest around the ship. The Observation Deck runs the length of the entire upper deck on the M/Y Tucano. Guests can visit the open bridge and watch the crew navigate the vessel, sit comfortably under the canopy and scan the canopy for monkeys and birds, or simply swing in a hammock in lazy comfort. This deck is open and an exceptional place to observe wildlife. Yellow Category cabin #0 is located on the Observation Deck.

The balcony around the front of the boat is a wonderful place to pull up a chair and observe the forest close up. The salon is airy and has windows all the way around. All of the walls are paneled in lovely hardwood. The Middle Deck has a wide balcony around the entire front of the boat with connecting doors to the Salon. It is a wonderful place to relax with a good book, sip a glass of wine, a soft drink or a beer, or simply to marvel at the splendor of the last great wilderness on Earth.  The Main Deck contains the main entry, a full galley and a swim deck at the stern. Travelers board the launches to the side of the boat through two entries designed for this purpose.

Dining Aboard Tucano

Meals aboard Tucano are not gourmet nor are they fine dining. But the ship has a very elaborate meal service and the cooks make the very best out of the wonderful fruits, fishes and flavors unique to the Amazon. All meals are served from the buffer and are wholesome, filling and delicious. Special diets can be accommodated. The cooks rise before dawn to make a large breakfast, and there is always a tantalizing scent coming out of the galley.

Crew & Guides Aboard Tucano

The staff of the M/Y Tucano are highly trained mariners who bring years of deep forest exploration to Amazon cruises. The guides are bilingual naturalists who not only help spot creatures, but also help travelers make sense of the cacophony of plant and animal life of the rainforest. Guides accompany guests on all excursions, with the entire passenger complement leaving the ship together, either via kayak or skiff. Other guided activities may include hiking and piranha fishing. The cooks prepare elaborate meals always from fresh local ingredients, and sailors safely navigate guests into some of the most fascinating waterways in the world.

Sustainability Aboard Tucano

The M/Y Tucano strives to conduct sustainable tourism and  to minimize the environmental impact of cruises with a focus on waste management, energy conservation and pollution control. All waste materials are returned to Manaus including all recyclable material, which is separated on board the vessel. Where possible, Tucano crew avoids the use of disposable packaging. Energy conservation is achieved by changing cabin linens every other day, “on-demand” water heaters are augmented by solar, and a policy of “low power hours” when generators are turned off when they are not needed (typically in the early morning and late afternoon when the boat is at anchor and guests are ashore). The vessel remains comfortable even without electrical generation because it was designed to offer water, illumination and climate control even without diesel generators operating. The M/Y Tucano has an efficient air-conditioning system functioning in the heat of the day and at night. But even during the low-power hours of the day, the cabins stay cool because the vessel is thermally well insulated. All of the windows on the vessel open and close, and windows in the public spaces are opened in the cool of the afternoon.

The Tucano observes a leave no trace policy, which includes not removing anything from the forest, leaving nothing behind, staying on defined trails, not creating new trails, keeping noise to a minimum and leaving no waste behind. Guides take considerable measures not to disturb wildlife including not getting too close, leaving an area if an animal becomes disturbed and not handling or otherwise disturbing wildlife.

The electrical system on board the M/Y Tucano is 110 volt/60 cycle alternating current. In the interests of conservation, in the morning and for a short time in the afternoon diesel generators and all other noise making machinery on the M/Y Tucano including the air-conditioning system are turned off. This is a good time to appreciate the wonderful stillness of the wilderness and the subtle natural sounds of the forest.

Cabins & Deck Plan Aboard Tucano

The Tucano features 9 comfortable cabins, each with air conditioning, large view windows and a private bath with a hot water pressurized shower, toilet and sink. Most cabins have individual beds and some have above and below beds. The 2018 refit refinished and redecorated each of the cabins with upgrading fixtures, artwork and amenities, including Egyptian cotton woven sheets.

Cabin Sizes by Cabin Number

Green Category Cabin 2 with bunk beds aboard Tucano.

The two cabins in this category (#2, #7) have above and below berths (bunk beds). They are slightly smaller than the Yellow Category cabins but nevertheless comfortable.

Yellow Category Cabin 5 with two single beds aboard Tucano.

The five cabins in this category (#3, #4, #5, #6, #0) are larger and have beds side by side. The beds in cabins #3-6 can be joined together to form a queen-sized bed. Cabin #0 has a queen-size bed beside a single bed, but a quite small bathroom, and can hold three travelers.

Blue Category Cabin 1 with bunk beds aboard Tucano.

The two cabins in this category (#1, #8) are designated single cabins, each with a single bed. On request, Blue Category cabins may be converted to Green Category with the insertion of a bunk bed.

On this exhilarating Brazilian Amazon adventure you'll spend  five days exploring one of the most famous rainforests in the world. We have also included a night in Manaus prior to your cruise to allow you ample time to arrive and relax before you embark on your journey. Your adventure onboard a small ship expedition cruise endeavors to capture the spirit and essence of the Amazon, ideal for travellers who only have a short amount of time. You will mostly voyage on the Rio Negro, one of the most magnificent rivers in the Amazon basin, but you'll also experience the  Encontra das Aguas, the dramatic point where both the Rio Negro and the Amazon meet.

The rich, dense rainforest is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, so you just may see howler monkeys, sloths, parrots, and even the elusive jaguar.

With three or four excursions every day and night while on board, this action-packed voyage will give you the chance to walk in the forest with an experienced guide, explore the river in small vessels, and visit local communities along the edges of this wild river. Marvel at the amazing flora and fauna in this unforgettable experience, designed to show you the highlights of the Brazilian Amazon in just a few days.

DAY 1- Arrival in Manaus

Arrival in Manaus

On arrival, please make your way through to the Arrivals Hall where our representative will be waiting for you to transfer you to your hotel. He/she will be holding a sign with your name on it. Please note this service is with a driver only.

DAY 2- Embarkation in Manaus

Embarkation in Manaus

This afternoon we embark on the Motor Yacht Tucano in Manaus, Brazil. We depart on the Rio Negro and as the vessel glides upstream we will have our first talk about Amazon environments. By late afternoon we enter one of the worlds largest river island systems, the Anavilhanas Archipelago. The boat will weave along a winding channel with rainforest on both sides in a riot of brilliant vegetation. Weather permitting, we will go for a launch excursion in the gnarled and dense flooded forest known as the igapó. Along the river bank we may see some Squirrel Monkeys and we may hear the other-worldly growls of Howler Monkeys echoing through the primitive rainforest. The Amazon has one of the greatest collection of birds in the world and we are sure to see some of these brightly coloured jewels perched in the treetops. We return to the M/Y Tucano for hors d’oeuvres on the observation deck and a toast to the rainforest sunset. Following dinner we will embark in our launches in search of nocturnal creatures such as the Caiman, the Amazon’s crocodilians. We may also see one of the large night birds such as a Potoo with its bulging eyes and large mouth adapted to swallow the huge Mariposa Moths. Meals: Dinner

DAY 3- Exploration of the Anavilhanas Archipelago

Exploration of the Anavilhanas Archipelago

Shortly after sunrise this morning we explore the Anavilhanas Archipelago, a reserve that includes the world’s largest system of river islands and also areas of tall dense rainforest. Here we will see the strange environment called the igapó, the black water flooded forest where dense forests grow right out of the dark water of the Rio Negro. Mid morning we return to the vessel for a hearty Brazilian breakfast. After some time to relax, weather permitting we will disembark at mid-morning and will go for a walk in the type of rainforest known as the terra firme. Here we have a good chance to see the markings, if not the animals themselves. Some of the Amazon ’s great mammals like peccaries (wild pigs) or even a jaguar. Around mid-day return to the vessel for lunch and a siesta. In the afternoon we will excursion in our launches along the edges of the dense forest and listen to the sunset chorus of birds, howler monkeys, and frogs. Weather permitting, tonight we will have an excursion to spot caiman (the Amazon crocodiles) and other nocturnal creatures. We very often see arboreal porcupines or sloths scrambling high in the limbs. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 4- Exploration of the Rio Negro

Exploration of the Rio Negro

Today we will voyage to the west side of the Rio Negro and continue to scout in our launches and walk in the forest. We will explore according to the weather and water depth areas rarely visited by anyone else. Tonight the M/Y Tucano goes downstream and river depth permitting, will enter an east bank affluent of the Rio Negro and explore on deep into the rainforest on this small river. After our nocturnal exploration of the rainforest in our launches and we return to the Motor Yacht Tucano for “Caipirinha Night” and perhaps try a bit of samba on the top deck. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5- Exploration - Meeting of the Waters

Exploration - Meeting of the Waters

We begin the day with a dawn excursion hunting for wakening wildlife followed by a full Brazilian breakfast. We will then go one last time into the forest for further explorations to see what wildlife and fauna we can see. In the mid-afternoon we will begin to journey downstream to arrive late in the day at the“Encontra das Aguas”, a stark several mile long line where two of the world’s largest rivers, the Amazon and the Rio Negro join in a turbulent maelstrom. Here the dark water of the Negro runs beside the opaque brown water of the Amazon. At sunset the M/Y Tucano will once again turn her bows upstream on the Rio Negro and journey to our overnight anchorage north of the City of Manaus. As we pass in front of Manaus, we will marvel at the scale of one of the world’s largest and most vibrant port cities, that is over one thousand miles from the sea. Tonight we will have a farewell dinner, reminiscing about our journey, before we prepare ourselves for an early morning departure the following day. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 6- Disembark in Manaus

Disembark in Manaus

Early this morning, after a hearty breakfast, all guests will say their goodbyes and disembark from the M/Y Tucano. Meals: Breakfast

amazon river yacht

The Motor Yacht Tucano experience is comfortable, intimate, efficient and fun. The vessel is not a luxury vessel, but then, this is not at all the best way to experience the Amazon rainforest environment. The best way to experience the Amazon is to get outside of the enclosed glass aquarium bubble that defines luxury cruising and dive in and embrace the environment - to experience to the fullest the exotic sights and sounds of this greatest wilderness on earth. The Motor Yacht Tucano is specifically designed to do just that.

Incredible Numbers, Constant Action

Put simply, this is the Amazon's most numerically productive fishing trip. The comfortable yacht's great mobility allows you to roam more than 300 miles of majestic waters with isolated lagoons, winding tributaries and lazy creeks. Optimal fishing conditions occur here from late-August through mid-October.

If you're looking for constant action and incredible productivity on any tackle type, then this is the trip for you. Extremely high daily catch averages (from 30 - 100 or more a day!). Incomparable productivity on the fly in the Amazon's premiere fly fishing destination. Trophy fish in the teens are common, but fish over 20 lbs. are rare here.

Private, air-conditioned cabins – Limited to 8 anglers per group with floatplane only access, private bathrooms and hot showers. This trip fills up a year in advance, so make your plans early!

Great Mobility, Trophy Hunt

The Curicuriari Barge's unique design, featuring a super stable, super-shallow-drafting barge hull allows it to go anywhere, while it’s superior mobility allows it to quickly move into regions with optimal fishing conditions. The never-before implemented combination of these two critical fishing mechanisms, allows this vessel to maintain superior fishing productivity in a region where fishing conditions often change on a weekly, sometimes daily, basis.

Return each evening to the comfort and security of the Curicuriari Barge. This operation boasts superb meals, fine wines, impeccable service and an Amazon atmosphere so comfortable, you never want to leave. Purpose built fishing boats, professional guides, incomparable knowledge of the fishery, well-appointed cabins and a full, open, bar make this the most pleasant of Amazon fishing experiences.

See What Our Anglers Have to Say...

amazon river yacht

Rio Negro - Blackwater Explorer

Great mix of numbers & size.

The most consistent fishing trip in the Amazon! This beautiful yacht roams the enormous Rio Negro basin from mid-October through March, concentrating on accessing productive waters. With hundreds of miles of complex, island-dotted archipelagos and dozens of fish-laden tributaries, this is the world's largest peacock bass fishery – and the Explorer is built to take advantage of it. Its great mobility and shallow-draft displacement hull let you go where conditions are best at a moment's notice.

If you're looking for a laid-back trip with consistent action and a real chance at a 20+ pound trophy, this is the trip. Good daily catch averages (from 15 – 50 or more a day). Fish over 20 lbs. are taken here routinely.

Able to accommodate larger groups with Double or Single Occupancy cabins — Exclusive groups can close a date with from 10 to 20 anglers. Mixed groups are limited to 14. Charter flight access.

Smaller Waters & Big Fish

This trip provides a great chance at a true trophy peacock in an intimate jungle setting. These floating bungalows can take you to the most inaccessible headwaters regions, the hidden home of trophy peacock bass. October through March are the months when low water conditions in the Rio Negro’s lagoon studded tributaries let us find optimal fishing conditions far away from the crowds. Drafting less than one foot with full aluminum hulls, these versatile units can make their way through just about anything.

If you seek a wall hanging trophy, this trip can deliver it. Daily catch averages (from 15-25+ per day). Giant Cichla temensis peacock bass are found in the Rio Negro tributaries.

Double Occupancy Bungalows – Space is limited to 8 anglers per group, floatplane only access, roomy A/C cooled cabins, private bathrooms, and hot showers. The best fishing value in the Amazon.

amazon river yacht

This premium accommodation, moves into the enormous Rio Negro basin from mid-November through February. Accessing some of the complex shallow backwaters and less accessible fish-laden regions in this basin can be challenging - but this vessel can get to any part of it. With its 16” draft, this barge flagship lets you go anywhere, even where others can’t. Floatplane access lets you stay there - ensuring excellent numbers and great access to trophy fish.

If you're looking for an intimate group size in luxurious accommodations with lots of fishing action, plenty of trophy fish in the teens and a real shot at 20+ pound monsters, then this is the trip for you. Good daily catch averages (from 20 to 40 per day). Fish over 20 pounds are taken here routinely.

Private cabins or king-sized couples suites - Space is limited to 8 anglers per trip with floatplane only access.

Rio Aripuana - Multi Species Trip

Great mix of numbers, variety & size.

If you're looking for a broad Amazon experience, this trip is for you. Preserved in a remote area and protected by outside access by rapids and waterfalls, this unique fishery provides anglers with more than just an exciting fishing trip. Surrounded by pristine, mature forests, over a dozen of the world's most exciting gamefish live here.

Please note that August-mid September is generally better for Payara and as the dates progress into December the catfishing will most likely improve (depending on water levels). The peak time for the various species differs from species to species.

A Guide to Travelling by Boat Down the Amazon

amazon river yacht

It’s hard to wrap your head around the sheer scale of the Amazon River – this humongous waterway makes most other rivers in the world look like a mere trickle. Last week, Lee and I travelled a total of 1,584 km between the Brazilian cities of Manaus and Belem on a river ferry – an epic journey that takes five days in total.

River boats are the long distance buses of the Amazon and they connect most of the major settlements along this enormous river. The large ferries are not the best for jungle sightseeing as they simply sail down the middle of the river (take an Amazon tour for that), but they are a fun, laid back way to get from point A to B and an experience in themselves. Here are my tips to help you plan your Amazon boat trip.

Planning Your Trip

Which direction to travel.

Lee and I decided to fly from Rio de Janeiro to Manaus, then take the journey to Belem because it was what worked best for our needs. It is possible to do the trip in the other direction, but you will be travelling upstream so it will take a little bit longer – so keep that in mind.

Don’t Expect Punctuality

When you are planning your Amazon River trip, don’t expect that the boats will arrive on time. In fact, it’s better to expect that they will always be several hours late. Things operate on “River Time” here, so a boat that is expected to leave at 10am will probably start boarding at noon. Our boat from Santarem to Belem was supposed to arrive at noon, but it didn’t get there until the evening.

Keep your schedule as flexible and possible – if you expect delays then you won’t be too stressed out when they inevitably happen. Just sit back and read another chapter in your book, you’ll get there when you get there.

Should You Stop Halfway?

It is possible to take the trip between Manaus and Belem as one single journey, which will turn out to be around 5 days in total. This might be the best option for you if you want to get directly between the two, but you might also choose to stop halfway in between.

We decided to stop for a few reasons. First of all, I am a digital nomad freelance writer and when I spend five days at a time without being connected to my email – I run the risk of missing out on an urgent job opportunity or getting behind on work. It made more sense for me to split the journey into two parts so that I could get to civilisation in between and respond to my emails.

Also, we wanted to stop in Santarem so that we could visit the beach at Alter do Chao. This is a beautiful sandy beach on the Tapajo River and it is the ideal place to relax, with several great restaurants where you can sip cold beer with your toes in the sand. We even rented a stand up paddleboard from our hostel for the afternoon!

Prepare for Boarding

What to bring with you.

Here are some items that you might find useful to bring with you on the trip:

  • Your luggage
  • An assortment of snacks
  • A hammock (more info on how to purchase one below)
  • A towel or a sarong to use as a blanket at night – it can get a little chilly in the small hours of the morning
  • Your camera – there will be some great shots along the way
  • Something to entertain yourself with – books, a Kindle, games, cards, a laptop with TV shows, etc.
  • Seasickness tablets (it is a river but it can get choppy)
  • Cash – to pay for your meals on the boat

Buying a Hammock – Your Bed for the Journey

One of the most essential supplies that you will need for your trip is your own hammock – the boat does not supply you with one. Luckily, they are easy to find. There will be market stalls selling hammocks near the docks where the boats set off – we bought ours on the pier in Manaus.

You will need a set of tying ropes, two per hammock, as well. On some boats you won’t need them because there will be hooks for you to hang your hammock from. However, on the Anna Karoline there was only horizontal metal poles on the ceiling so we had to use the ropes to tie our hammocks up.

Don’t be afraid to haggle when you buy your hammock. Our hammock seller started off at 50 R per hammock and 5 R each for the tying ropes (120 R in total). We haggled him down to 75 R in total, including the ropes. We might have got it cheaper if we had haggled harder, but we were happy to pay that price. Never take the first price he offers, be patient and haggle with a friendly smile on your face – you can save a lot of money!

It is possible to pay a lot more for a cabin on the boat, but I don’t know why anyone would want to sleep in a dark, stale, windowless room when they could sleep on a hammock on the open air deck. I am not exaggerating when I say that my hammock blessed me with the best sleep of my entire adult life.

I think it was a combination of the soothing white noise from the boat engines, the way the hammock cradled my spine in an ergonomic way and the gentle swaying motion of the boat. Even with afternoon naps, I slept around 9-12 hours per night on the boat and one night I slept a blissful 15 hours. I haven’t snoozed that much since I was an unemployed teenager – I feel fantastic!

What to Expect on the Boat

We took the Anna Karoline from Manaus to Santarem and the Liberty Star from Santarem to Belem. I can only tell you about what we experienced on those boats, however it seems to me that most of the Amazon ferries are similar so this will give you a general idea of what to expect.

Cleanliness?

Be warned, this is not a luxury cruise ship. It is an old, rusty, run down Amazon River ferry. However, it’s not as bad as you might think. The bathrooms can be a little scuzzy and stale, but they are cleaned often. There are showers, so you can keep yourself fresh on the boat. In fact, the showers have amazing water pressure and are better than many showers in hostels you will find in Brazil.

There are a few creepy crawlies – spiders, moths and the like – but there is no avoiding those in the jungle. Take bug spray for the mosquitos and otherwise don’t worry. I found the bug life quite fascinating actually, on the first boat I saw a bright green praying mantis and on the second boat I was visited by a moth so big I thought it was a bat.

Connectedness?

Expect to have no internet access for the duration of your trip, as well as no mobile phone signal for most of the journey. You are in the middle of the freaking Amazon River jungle after all. 🙂

This means that if you are a digital nomad such as myself, you will need to take these days off work. Set an email auto responder to let your clients know where you are and that it will take a few days for you to email them back. If you have weekly tasks that you need to carry out for your remote job, make sure that you do them in advance.

There will be electrical sockets on the boat, but there will be very few of them and they will be a hot commodity with many people wanting to charge their phones and other devices. I am writing this post offline, while sitting on a plastic chair up against the water cooler with my laptop plugged into the only free socket I could find.

The lack of connection to the outside world on the boat has been quite a nice break for me. As a freelancer it’s easy to feel like work never stops, as there is always something more to do and a steady stream of fresh email in your inbox begging for your attention. Taking a few days off the grid has allowed me to recharge, read Game of Thrones, watch an entire season of Parks and Recreation, work on my own projects and sleep – it’s been truly wonderful.

There was food served on the boat, but it was not included in the price of our tickets. The typical price was around 10-15 R for a large plate of food. You could buy a food token at the shop and exchange it for your meal when the dining area was open. Typically, the dining area was open for meals at set times, usually:

6:30am – 8:30am – breakfast

10:30am – 1:30pm – lunch

5:30pm – 7:30pm – dinner

Needless to say, I was never awake early enough for breakfast so I can’t tell you what that was like. Lunch and dinner was a variation on beef, rice, beans, noodles and salad every time. The food is cooked fresh on the ship and it is actually quite good.

However, even though it is tasty – having the same meal over and over again can get a little boring, so I would recommend bringing some of your own food too. I would have loved to have a sandwich for at least one of my meals just to break up the monotony.

There was also a shop on the boat where we could buy beers, instant noodle cups, potato chips, cookies and other snacks. The snacks are expensive, however, so bringing your own supplies will certainly help you to reduce your costs.

Life on the Boat

What is there to do on a river boat on the Amazon? Basically – a whole lot of nothing.

But that’s the best part! You can simply relax, write in your journal, catch up on those postcards, read a book, watch episodes of your favourite show, play cards, chat with your travel companions and catch up on your sleep.

Meanwhile, the muddy expanse of the vast Amazon River drifts by. You can watch as you slowly pass small villages, wooden huts, children bathing in the river, lush green forests and spectacular orange and lavender sunsets. You’ll get where you are going, eventually, but in the meantime just relax and enjoy the ride.

Tucano: A First Class Brazilian Riverboat Cruise on the Amazon

Days: 5 & 7 | From $2,200/per person

This is our top cruise recommendation in the Brazilian Amazon. The Tucano is a first-class riverboat that takes 16-18 passengers deeper into the wilderness than most other cruise vessels go, up the pristine Rio Negro. The nine-cabin vessel operates true expedition cruises with a deep focus on nature, meaning the emphasis is on spotting wildlife in the company of expert naturalist guides, learning about the extraordinary diversity of the rainforest ecosystem, and hearing a variety of lectures on-board. The Tucano has earned a reputation as the option of choice for those who want an Amazon experience with a deep emphasis on ecology and natural history. Onboard, cabins are comfortable, with air conditioning and private baths, and travelers enjoy a fun, relaxed Brazilian atmosphere and well prepared local Brazilian cuisine. The Tucano is a great way to experience the Amazon, and it has consistently received outstanding feedback from Vaya travelers.

6 night cruise itinerary.

Day 1     Friday     Arrive to Manaus

Upon arrival to Manaus you will be met at the airport by a local representative and transferred to your hotel, located on the banks of the Rio Negro. Depending on the time of your arrival we can arrange a city tour, including a visit to the spectacular Teatro Amazonas Opera House, built in 1896. Overnight in Manaus.

Day 2     Saturday     Embark on your Amazon Cruise

In the morning you will transfer to your 82 foot long riverboat and depart upstream on the Rio Negro. As you cruise through the world’s largest river island system, the Anavilhanas Archipelago, you will be able to watch the vegetation and surroundings change as you leave behind the frontier settlements and enter true wilderness. In the afternoon you will have a chance to disembark in search of wildlife, or take a swim in the clean refreshing water before dinner.

Day 3     Sunday     Excursions into the Rainforest

In the early morning you can explore the rainforest along the water’s edge, listening to the sounds of toucans and howler monkeys. After breakfast you will enter the rainforest once again with your naturalist guide, receiving an education in the diverse Amazon ecology before returning to the boat for lunch. After lunch you will continue upstream, stopping once more for a quick swim and to explore a bit more of the river in your skiffs.

Day 4     Monday     Travel up the Rio Negro / Rainforest excursions

Before breakfast you can enjoy an early trip into the forest as it comes to life. Following breakfast you will set out in the launches, exploring the surrounding rainforest and tributaries. In the afternoon and into the night the Tucano will continue up the Rio Negro. From the observation deck you will have spectacular views of the sky as it changes colors and fills with stars in this area with virtually no man-made light.

Day 5     Tuesday     Join the Rio Jauaperi

After your two morning excursions the Tucano will navigate along the densely forested shore, searching for wildlife and potentially stopping at a settler’s home carved out of the forest. In the early afternoon you will encounter the Rio Jauaperi and a forest known as the “varzea.” Here you will search for various animals unique to this particular environment.

Day 6     Wednesday     Rio Negro / Night excursion

Today you will depart from the Rio Jauaperi and navigate back down the Rio Negro, exploring new rainforest habitats all the while. In the evening you will have a chance to disembark in search of nocturnal animals that have come out from hiding.

Day 7     Thursday     Lago Janauari Ecological Park

In the morning you will have a chance to visit the Lago Janauari Ecological Park, where the thick brown water of the Amazon River flows swiftly through the forest. By midday you will find yourself at the “Encontra das Aguas” (Meeting of the Waters), a miles-long stretch where two of the world’s largest rivers, the Amazon and Rio Negro, join together. Here the almost black water of the Negro runs beside the obscure brown water of the Amazon. Tonight you will have one last evening excursion in search of nocturnal wildlife.

Day 8     Friday     Return to Manaus

After a final morning waking to the sounds of the Amazon, your riverboat cruise will come to an end and you will disembark in Manaus. Depending on the timing of your flight, we can arrange a city tour before you are transferred to the airport for your flight out. We can combine this cruise with any of our other destinations in Brazil or the rest of South America. Please inquire if interested.
