The International Yachting Media is the reference point for boating in the world
The International Yachting Media is the worlds most widely read boating magazine . Whit its portal It broadcast its original contents in four languages and in more than 200 countries in the world developing 950,000 views a week. The web portal is the main source of information for yacht and boat owners , the place where they can find anything about their boating passion . If you’re looking for advices on how to keep your sailboat, a tutorial on how to do the " fishermans knot ", to sale your boat or even the closest port to your needs, you came to the right place. The International Yachting Media is, indeed, a real huge web portal that is not limited to the publication of the magazine and its news but that, totally for free for charge, offers special sections that range from the sale of marine equipment to boat technical files , from the ports and anchorages pilot book - the most complete and most up-to-date one of the Mediterranean - to the possibility of buying and selling a sailboat or a powerboat. Before exploring the various sections of the website, it is important to highlight that The International Yachting Media is the only portal in the world to be structured as Wikipedia : all users can, in fact, interact with the pages of the portal and modify their contents, contributing to their constant updating and cooperate actively with our team. The secret of our success lies in a simple, functional, engaging communication that, with its many sections, meets all the boat owners needs. One of the most visited areas is our online boating magazine where, every day, we publish articles that reflect all boat owners interests. Not only press releases about the launch of new boats but also sea trials of super yachts, sailbots or maxiribs and the corresponding reviews (not always positive), how-to articles and useful tutorials for navigation , insights to boat shows , travel stories and diaries . The online port pilot book of The International Yachting Media is the largest and most popular pilot book in Europe and the only one to have ports and anchorages on the same map . Designed to offer a simple access even from mobile devices, it offers the possibility of having files of ports and anchorages always at your fingertips, with essential information, descriptions, satellite views, photos and videos. Like other sections of the portal, the pilot book is structured in order to be readily available to users. Everyone can add or update the file of a port or an anchorage and, after a quick moderation, new informations will be put online. Moreover, readers contribution will be awarded with the publication of their username in the files they have updated. Among the most visited sections of the portal, Boats for sale is particularly relevant. Updated in January 2019, it was made even more user-friendly, safe and captivating. Today, "boats for sale" is the only platform of the market to be 100% free of charge, for both boat owners and brokers. The presence of more than 25,000 ads uploaded clearly shows the great success of the section All you have to do is look for the model of the sail boat or motor boat you want to be able to find it among thousands of occasions. If, instead of a boat, you are looking for second hand marine accessories, Nautical Classifieds is the right option for you. Users can add their own ads for free or search the right product/service, from clothing to deck equipment, from boat trailers to berths. Virtual Boat Show provides users with the complete files of the new models offered by the worlds most prestigious boat manufacturers that, always free, can add their range and make it available to readers. Boats data sheet , instead, offers the technical files of more than 15,000 discontinued boats . Like other sections of the portal, all files can be easily updated by users. The innovative services of The International Yachting Media also include Boat Holidays . This section offers both the opportunity to host passengers on board your own boat and the search of another users (or charter) boat anywhere in the world. This section is the only one of the market to be totally free of charge for both parties . Indeed, transactions are directly managed by the interested parties. Our task is just to put them in touch. The reader can easily distinguish between the offers of charter company and those of private boat owners through the simple, user-friendly graphic design that identifies the category. A new way to enjoy summer holidays and, above all, a new efficient way to give visibility to all those who organize amazing boating holidays on dreamy yachts. Anyone involved in the nautical sector must be aware that, although it is a constantly evolving reality, it is also firmly anchored in traditions and nautical terms that don’t want to be overcome. In order to meet neophytes meets and allow professionals to improve their knowledge, The International Yachting Media makes available its own nautical dictionary and translator . The latter, too, is totally editable. So that when you’re on a sailboat and you are told to "fuck the mainsail", you will know exactly what they are asking you to do. Last but not least, Nautical Arts and Crafts is a section where users are transported within arts and crafts that, between anecdotes and descriptions, pay tribute to all the nautical professions that have become real forms of art over years. Luxury yachts: history and definitions
Superyachts began to appear at the beginning of 1900 when the first wealthy shipowners ordered their construction with the intention of using them exclusively for leisure purposes.
Among the first motor superyachts we find many conversions of merchant or military boats. A perfect example is the famous Christina O which, 99 meters long and originally launched in 1943 under the name HMCS Stormont (an anti-submarine frigate), was purchased in 1947 by Aristotle Onassis and then converted to private use at a crazy expense for that time: four million dollars.
Today with the term superyachts are generically indicated all those pleasure boats longer than 24 meters, (about 80 ft), although, in reality, there are more precise definitions and subdivisions.
The first large subdivision obviously concerns their length. Are in fact specifically defined superyachts , leisure yachts between 24 and 50 meters while, with the term megayachts , we normally indicate those over 50 meters and up to 100 meters.
The few and fantastic pleasure yachts that exceed 100 meters are defined today gigayachts , like the Azzam that, launched in April 2013, measures the beauty of 180 meters (590 feet) and, perhaps for a short time, is the longest superyacht in the world.
The market of these magnificent giants of the sea is very active. From a 2016 statistic we learn in fact that in the world there would be 10,000 active superyachts, 80% of which are motor yachts.
Every year about 150 Superyachts are sold, produced and launched all over the world. The first producing country is Italy, which also enjoys the supremacy of the shipyard that claims the title of first producer in the world: it is the Azimut Benetti group that has been in first position for 21 years.
Megayachts News
These boats are real floating royal palaces, offering a wealth of facilities and equipment on board that make both relaxation and entertainment sublime. Most of these yachts offer suites and lounge areas, a gym, a disco, a cinema, a swimming pool, a spa, an area reserved for tenders, water toys, submarines and, on the largest yachts, one or more helidecks for private helicopters.
One of the main peculiarities of superyachts is the presence on board of a highly professional crew , able to provide a five-stars assistance during the entire cruise period. The crew is generally made up of the following categories of personnel: the captain, who is in charge of the boat; the chef, who is in charge of the kitchen and food management and the staff who, like in a luxury hotel, is dedicated to serving the guests. Onboard we normally find also a technical crew, dedicated to the operation and maintenance of the boat, usually a motorist and an electronics expert who, together, ensure the operation of the boat and all the systems on board.
It is therefore a very various and luxurious market, that is constantly evolving. Our online magazine was born from this observation, a publication entirely dedicated to these fantastic masterpieces of naval art.
Superyachts News Magazine
The Superyachts News magazine has been created in two languages and brings the spectacular images of these boats to the web. How to Find Solar Eclipse Glasses—And Spot Fake Ones
J an Mars is so excited about the upcoming solar eclipse that she purchased 1,200 branded pairs of solar eclipse glasses for her clients and friends.
“Man, it was definitely one of those things you will remember for your whole life,” says the 58-year-old real estate agent based in Collierville, Tenn. of witnessing her first total solar eclipse in 2017. “I looked at when the next [solar eclipse] was on the way home from that one. I saw that [my brother’s ranch] was going to be in the middle of totality and I called him and said, ‘I hope you really are enjoying your ranch, because you got to keep it until then.’”
But where you purchase your glasses before the April 8 eclipse is important. Unsafe eclipse glasses were a significant problem in 2017, causing online retailers like Amazon to issue refunds and face a lawsuit by customers who purchased unsafe glasses. (The case was later dismissed in court.)
Here’s everything you need to know about how to purchase solar eclipse glasses, get them for free—and avoid fakes.
How to purchase safe solar eclipse glasses
Before purchasing solar eclipse glasses or viewers, be sure to check that the items are coming from the American Astronomical Society’s (AAS) list of trusted vendors . While the AAS previously issued a press release stating that most eclipse glasses are safe to use, the group recently discovered a pair of counterfeit glasses that did not meet the ISO 12312-2 standards that dictate how much ultraviolet and infrared light can be transmitted by the filters.
“It's not smart to just go on Amazon, Etsy, eBay, or Google and search for eclipse glasses and buy whatever pops up,” says Richard Fienberg, project manager of the American Astronomical Society's Solar Eclipse Task Force. “There are companies selling eclipse glasses under false pretenses. The two most likely false pretenses are the glasses have not actually been tested properly and shown to be safe, or the glasses are made in China but printed with information that says they're made in America.” Where the glasses are manufactured matters because glasses must be tested by special equipment in an accredited lab.
As a part of the Solar Eclipse Task Force, Fienberg looks at companies’ test reports, and verifies their distributor, along with conducting a series of other checks, before adding them to the AAS list. (The list is not exhaustive, meaning there could be other sellers that are safe to purchase from.)
“If you see a company that claims to be on the AAS list, and then you go look at the AAS list and they're not on it, that should tell you something,” says Feinberg. “They might have been on it in 2017. But we erased the list and started from scratch a few years ago.”
Amazon tells TIME that all solar eclipse glasses they sell must be ISO compliant and come from the AAS list. “We continuously monitor our store, and if we discover a product was undetected by our automated checks, we address the issue immediately and refine our controls. We take action to maintain a safe selection for our customers, including removing noncompliant products, and outreach to sellers, manufacturers, and government agencies for additional information, when appropriate,” says an Amazon spokesperson.
How to test for faulty eclipse glasses
Given the unreliable market, Fienberg suggests customers test out their eclipse glasses before April 8 to ensure they have a safe pair. To do so, he says you should first wear their eclipse glasses inside your home. If you can see the room and objects around you, that means your glasses are not dark enough and will not adequately protect you from the sun.
“There's a few really really bright lights that you might be able to see through—like an old incandescent bulb, you might be able to see the filament, [or] if you have a halogen bulb,” Fienberg says. “If you do look through them and you can't see anything, then you can actually go outside and take a really quick glance at the sun through them and probably find that the view is okay, it's sharp, it's not too bright, not too dim. Then you should feel pretty, pretty confident that they're safe.”
How to get free eclipse glasses
The STAR Library Network is distributing five million eclipse glasses to more than 13,000 U.S. public libraries, according to the AAS. Interested patrons should check with their local library to see if they received any free pairs, and may also check possible locations with this map .
Some optometry offices, including MyEyeDr., are giving out free eclipse glasses at select locations . Warby Parker will also be offering free pairs in all stores starting April 1.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on Tuesday that the state will distribute free, limited edition “I love NY” eclipse glasses across 30 locations. You can check distribution centers here . You should also check if your local county or city is offering free glasses. Residents in Chautauqua County, New York for instance, can get glasses from a number of locations .
You might also be able to snag some at your local watch party. The Republic Square in Austin, Texas is giving out free solar eclipse viewers for the first 200 guests that attend.
When do you need to use eclipse glasses?
While you’ll be able to see the eclipse with your bare eyes once the moon completely covers the sun, or reaches totality, you must use solar eclipse glasses or viewers during the partial phases of the eclipse. That means that for the approximate hour leading up to—and the approximate hour after—the eclipse, your eyes need some sort of protection.
Fienberg says that those outside the path of totality —the roughly 115-mile wide path from which the total solar eclipse will be visible across 14 states—will have to use protection throughout the entire event.
Fienberg says that people can use solar eclipse glasses with their contact lenses or prescription glasses, but should not use any other objects to look more closely at the sun. “It is dangerous to put on a pair of solar eclipse glasses and then pick up a pair of binoculars and look through those,” he says. “If you do that, the extra light gathering power of those big front lenses on your binoculars is going to collect so much light that it's going to burn through the solar filter and through your eye.”
Can you use old eclipse glasses?
If you have eclipse glasses from previous solar eclipses that crossed the U.S. in 2017 and 2023, they will still be safe to use in 2024 , Fienberg says.
However, the AAS advises folks to inspect their old lenses for any holes, tears, scratches, or other damage. Older solar eclipse glasses can only be used if they are in good condition, the lenses have not gotten loose from the frames, or they do not show any other problems.
What if you don’t have solar eclipse glasses?
Those who don’t have eclipse glasses can still have a fun viewing experience by using pinhole projection. Instructions on how to make a pinhole projector can be found here .
Correction, March 20
The original version of this story misstated the type of service MyEyeDr. provides. They are optometrists, not ophthalmologists.

Bank Fishing Big Lakes and Reservoirs

When you go to a big reservoir or lake in Missouri, you often see lots of water and lots of fishing boats. You might be left wondering, how can I fish here if I don’t have a boat? The good news is you don’t have to have a big boat to get in on the angling action. If you follow these tips, you can have just as much success fishing big lakes and reservoirs without benefit of a boat.
Walk the Bank
Public boat ramps are an easy way to gain access to the water, but better fishing can often be found if you stay away from commonly used boat accesses. Moving down the bank away from the ramp can get you to unfished areas.
“I recommend Corps of Engineers accesses,” said Shane Bush, Table Rock Lake fisheries management biologist. “There are numerous lesser-used public access points at reservoirs that are at the end of public roads. However, anglers should make sure they know exactly what is public land. Contact the Corps of Engineers for questions about locations and whether or not they can fish there.”
Use Radial Casting
Once you find your fishing spot, it’s best to cast your line in many different directions before moving on to a new location. For example, while standing in one spot, make several casts into the water from one side, directly in front of you, and then to the other side. If you have no luck after doing this a couple times, move on down the bank. Target any fish habitat — aquatic plants and wood or rock piles — you come across.
Use Multiple Fishing Methods
Once you find a location, try setting up some rods on the bank with worms or other bait, while you fish with artificial lures nearby. Remember, if you use more than three poles at any one time, the additional poles must be labeled with your full name and address or conservation number.
Fishing Zones
Fish often congregate in areas above and below dams.
“At Stockton Lake from late February to early April, we have excellent bank fishing opportunities on and around the dam for walleye,” said Ben Parnell, fisheries management biologist at Stockton Lake.
For safety reasons, dams typically have a no fishing zone warning close to the dam, so look for posted signs or research zones before your trip.
Tributaries and Outflows
Samantha Clary, Lake of the Ozarks fisheries management biologist, recommends targeting inlets and outlets of lakes.
“Wherever there is incoming or outgoing water, there’s going to be food and fish,” Clary said. “Fish often use these areas for spawning where gravel banks are used for spawning beds.”
Bull Shoals Lake Fisheries Management Biologist Nathan Recktenwald has similar thoughts about southern Missouri locations.
“I would encourage anglers to concentrate on fishing tributaries during spawning migrations,” Recktenwald said. “From February through April, there are a lot of bank fishermen around the Tecumseh access on Norfork Lake, Haskins Ford on Bull Shoals Lake, Beaver Creek (Kissee Mills) on Bull Shoals Lake, and Powersite Dam on Bull Shoals Lake. They are there for the walleye and white bass spawning runs. During the spring black bass and crappie spawn in April and May, anglers can take advantage of bank fishing just about anywhere there are small gravel banks used for spawning beds by the fish.”
Manmade Structures
Most fish like to hang out near areas that can provide shelter and food. These areas do not have to be naturally formed.
“Manmade structures, such as walkways, bridge pilings, docks, and preventative erosion rip-rap areas, can also hold fish,” Recktenwald said.
Be aware that there are rules that do not allow close fishing around marinas and gas docks.
MDC Fish Attractors
MDC fisheries management biologists place brush, log, and rock piles in many lakes to attract fish. These fish attractor locations are recorded and can be found in the free MO Fishing app, available on Android and Apple platforms at short.mdc.mo.gov/Zi2.
“Check the MO Fishing app for a map that will show brush piles that have been installed near shore by MDC,” Clary said. “The Larry Gale Access on Lake of the Ozarks is an example of an area that offers brush piles sunk near shore.”
Points and Breaks
Annie Hentschke, Mark Twain Lake fisheries management biologist, recommends targeting points and breaks.
“Points are shoreline areas that extend out and slope gradually down and into deeper water,” Hentschke explained. “Breaks are areas where water conditions change — shallows begin, waves versus calm water, watercolor change, etc.”
Windswept Banks and Coves
A breeze or strong wind can cause currents that either push bait fish toward the shore or stir up microscopic food. Baitfish will concentrate in these windswept banks and coves, which then brings in larger fish.
“At Truman Reservoir, folks can catch catfish from the bank year-round,” said Chris Brooke, fisheries management biologist at Truman Reservoir. “You can catch white bass and hybrid striped bass on windswept banks in the fall and blue catfish through the winter.”
If you are fishing big reservoirs and lakes, be willing to try different strategies until you find what works on a particular day. All lakes are different and a strategy that works well at one lake may not work as well at another.
“Fishing from the bank can be challenging at Table Rock because the water is so clear, and fish are so deep most of the year,” Bush said. “It would probably be good to scale down your expectations on what you can catch from the bank in a large reservoir because of this. Sunfish species are easy to come by, and bass can be caught during certain times of the year near the bank.”
Bush and Brooke point out some similarities between Table Rock Lake and Truman Reservoir. They say to forget about trying to catch a crappie from the bank unless it’s mid-April through mid-May. If you’re wanting to target bass, they recommend fishing steeper sided banks where deep water is close by. In the spring, fish further up the river arms to target white bass and walleye.
So, you don’t have a boat? No problem. With a little planning and preparation, you can be successful and have a great time fishing big lakes from the bank.
