The catamarans operating in the area have evolved significantly and are now a popular sailing option in the virgin islands. With their larger size, superior stability, and luxurious amenities, guests can enjoy more space and comfort while on the BVI yacht charters.

This is because catamarans operating in the British Virgin Islands, far from being the second-best sailing choice of the distant past, are getting bigger and more luxurious , affording a pleasant, relaxed journey on the gentle trade winds of the archipelago. A fully crewed catamaran is a comfortable alternative to motor yachts, especially above the 60ft+ range .

Furthermore, while the British Virgin Islands have traditionally been known as sailing destinations, there has been a growing demand for motor yachts among luxury yacht charter guests. Virgin Islands Entry Regulations

From covid to work permits and business licences.

With the health crisis is almost at an end , Covid regulations in the British Virgin Islands have changed. They have not disappeared, but transferred into a bureaucracy war of work permit and trade licences.

What that means is that your charter starting in USVI might not go to the BVI because the paperwork did not make it through. How can you be sure that your selected yacht has the necessary paperwork to go? That depends on your dates. Consult your preferences with us and we’ll be very direct about where your selected yacht is in terms of feasibility of a BVI charter. Note that the rules are subject to, often very unexpected, changes.

BVI charter guests on vacation are no longer required to register for entry clearance or show proof of travel insurance, regardless of their vaccination status. Also, there is no longer the need to present a COVID-19 test result upon arrival in the British Virgin Islands.

YACHT CHARTER SEASON IN BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

If you’re looking to charter a yacht in the BVI, you’ll want to start your search at least six months out. The main charter season in the BVI spans from December to March, with a peak around Christmas/New Year. Notice the interesting months of April and November, which offer reasonable deals in the British Virgin Islands.

By the beginning of summer, the best choices for peak dates are booked. It’s not unseen to have clients inquire 2 years ahead – the value for money First minute vs. Last minute is unbelievable. There still are “deals” on last minute charters that rarely have to do with last minute cancellations.

Jost Van Dyke

A beautiful island in the British Virgin Islands, Jost Van Dyke is a must-see for yacht charters looking to experience some of the best scuba diving in the world. The waters around the Jost Van Dyke land are flourishing with marine life- creating an incredible opportunity for snorkeling and other water sports.

Even though it is one of the smallest leeward islands in the  BVI , the yacht charters will be treated to  spectacular scenery  and authentic experiences in Jost Van Dyke. Don’t miss a visit to the Great Harbour Bars of Foxy’s and Ivan’s for a drink, the peaceful energy of Diamond Cay, and the crashing waves of Bubbly Pool.

Connect yourself with the local culture at White Bay – a magical place of positive energy in BVI yacht charters. Swim from your boat to the famous Soggy Dollar bar for a painkiller. These 19th-century abandoned ruins are found between Copper Mine Bay and Crooks Bay on the island’s southeastern point. The structures were built by Cornish miners and housed around 130 families before the mine was closed in 1862.

This tiny island is arguably one of the most pristine places in the world, and it makes sense why it has become synonymous with white sand beaches. Loblolly Beach, Bay Beach, and Cow Wreck Beach are not to be missed in BVI yacht charters.

Anegada sea is also home to the largest barrier coral reef in the Caribbean. You’ll find turtles, nurse sharks, stingrays, and even manta rays!

We had the BEST vacation on "Sol Liv". Captain James and Chef Robyn were easy and fun to be around, and provided wonderful - and seemingly effortless- hospitality. The boat was beautiful, spotless, and spacious and somehow never seemed crowded--plenty of room to spread out and catch a nap when sailing. In addition to sailing the boat, Captain James was a master-bartender; he created a different "captain's cocktail" (aka "sundowners") each day, even providing the kids with beautiful nonalcoholic versions. And Robyn--she is truly a master chef. The creations that she made were not just visually stunning, but delicious as well. The four kids on the boat had a blast; in addition to swimming and snorkeling, they had jousting competitions on the paddleboards, and even tried to catch one of the tarpons that orbited the boat at night (no luck). I am so grateful to have been on this trip.

My family and I just got back from a sailing trip in the BVIs with Voyage Charters and, although I had never been sailing and had no idea what to expect going in, it exceeded all expectations I could have ever had. Our boat was named Sol Liv and it was BEAUTIFUL and so fancy! There were 6 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms, not including crew quarters. Even though we had a family of 11 onboard, we never felt crowded and like we were constantly on top of each other. We also had our own Chef (Danielle, Denzie as Ryan calls her) and Captain (Ryan) who were both incredible. They knew the islands very well and always had a super fun day planned for us. My mom went into the trip with a few places she wanted to see/visit, which were accommodated, but some of the stops were places Ryan and Danielle recommended which we really appreciated since they are locals to the area! Danielle, was outstanding and made the most delicious meals with recipes I had never had before. Every meal we had was delicious and I am still in awe that she was able to cook that efficiently for 11 people. She would even go into town to acquire local foods so that everything was nice and fresh. I hope she makes a cookbook because I need those recipes! The Captain, Ryan, was also wonderful and went above and beyond to take us to the best spots in the BVIs. He was always ready with the dinghy to take us to shore whenever we wanted. He also went out of his way to take us on 2 separate hikes to places he thought we would like and had pretty views (first along the ridge on Norman Island, then at Cane Garden Bay). My brother and mom also lost their sunglasses in the water and Ryan went down and retrieved them for them. Danielle and Ryan were such a hospitable crew and felt like part of the family the whole trip (they even joined us for family game night 😊 ). I highly recommend Voyage Charters, especially if you have Ryan and Danielle onboard. We will definitely be back and will request this dynamic duo!!

Captain Tony knew of our interests from the Preference Packet ahead of time and set a course of travel through the BVIs based on our interests. Once he got to know us even better during the trip, at various times he asked us our preference of activities and was flexible to amend the schedule to accommodate our interests. His sailing expertise made us ALL feel very comfortable and relaxed! (We had never lived on a boat before!) Chef Claudia made delicious meals for us every day! She too had carefully read our Preference Sheets and knew what types of food my family likes best. The variety and depth of the food was amazing, and the timing of when we eat was always perfect! Together, they created a vacation that included lots of snorkeling, swimming, sunning, paddle-boarding, kayaking, and hiking (when we stopped on land). They know the BVIs so well so therefore knew all the best places - both known and less known!, and shared those with us. Not only was it a vacation we will never forget, but I am confident we will be lifelong friends with Tony and Claudia! Thank you Voyage Charters for the trip of a lifetime!

Most BVI charters start in Tortola. Nevertheless, it’s possible to start a crewed charter in Saint Thomas in the US Virgin Island. Not all yachts are able to start the charter in the USVI. You’ll either want a yacht that is based in the USVI or we can arrange a St. Thomas pickup (with many yachts).

Types of charter

There are two primary ways to break down the BVI yacht charters: crew and power.

• By the primary type of power used to move the boat around: Sailboat Motor yacht
• The secondary sorting is by crew that is available on the chartered yacht. Crewed Yacht Captain Only

Crewed charter

The crewed charter usually includes at least a captain and a chef. The boat is provisioned according to guest wishes and preferences. Since all the work is handled by the crew (captain handles the boat and the chef handles the food, and often more (diving, watersports)), the guests can really have a relaxed, laid back time.

Captain only charter

Captain only charters are a good middle ground between the crewed charters and the bareboat charters. It’s very much like car rental. You do the paperwork and rent the boat. Local experience of the crew should not be underestimated. A captain will know secret spots and is able to quickly analyze your preferences and types of vacation you wish (or need).

Common Issues On a BVI Yacht Charters

• I got a boat from USVI – will I find out, after I sign the contract, that we’ll not go to the BVI at all?
• All Inclusive – what does it include?
• Air Conditioning – does it run during the night?
• APA- Advance Provisioning Allowance – are you going to have a daily overview?
• Crew – what is the real crew feedback? How did they do on their last charters?
• Crew Change – is your crew a part of the contract?

Not So Obvious Issues

• are your cruising taxes included?
• how long is your immigration procedure going to take? Minutes or hours?
• will I loose a day in order to catch a Ferry to get a STT morning flight?

Bareboat charter

Bareboat charter is the budget friendly option for qualified sailors. Originally intended for people who know the area, the price convenience caused that today, many of the bareboat captains would be better off with a captain only charter. If you haven’t been to the BVI before or you haven’t that much experience sailing the boat you wish to charter (rent), consider a captain only charter, you will thank us later:) At the moment, we don’t include bareboats in our search, please inquire directly and we can find a matching bareboat for you.

Most people would start with 50 islands and cays, right? Let’s start with the relaxed and chilled atmosphere where liming was invented (drinking/eating and chilling for hours without a defined schedule). It’s the freedom that you can have when sail to bars like Willy T, the optimism and positive energy that you recuperate over the course of your vacation, that’s what makes the BVI special.

You can immediately tell the people who arrived yesterday. Full of stress, solving small things… a bundle of nerves that we turn into after prolonged experience with the “real world.” After a few painkillers (the BVI signature drink) or Frozen Margaritas (Willy T is the place), every pain diminishes and the problems fade away. These same people leave after a week smiling, optimistic and full of energy.

Fountaine Pajot launched the Lucia 40 on the boatyard’s 40th anniversary—a nice birthday present to itself as well as to sailors seeking a manageable cruising cat perfect for cruising the BVI.

The design team of Berret-Racoupeau was tasked with bringing big-boat allure to a smaller footprint, and the result is a sleek cruiser that has plenty of beam and deck space without looking boxy or awkwardly tall. The hulls have a fine entry for better performance, the fixed keels eliminate the need for daggerboards and the coachroof angles down as it swoops forward, adding shade over the windows. The Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40 is actually bigger than the Lipari 41 she replaced, featuring a more spacious cockpit, more interior volume and more oversized windows all around.

Boarding via the aft transom platforms is made easier with well-placed handholds. From here, it’s only one step up to the cockpit, which as mentioned, is very spacious. In fact, it is almost the size of the cockpit of the popular Helia 44. The portside L-shaped dinette can accommodate up to eight, and there is additional seating along the transom and on the starboard side. The entire cockpit is protected by a composite bimini, which also serves as the base for the large mainsheet traveller, keeping the running rigging out of the cockpit.

Nauti Dog has an elevated helm position with seating for two, with excellent visibility of the sail plan and for manoeuvering. Her twin 30 HP engines make her a breeze to pick up a mooring or to come alongside. An electric winch hoists her fully battened mainsail, and a furling jib is set in a matter of seconds. The mainsail stack pack, also known as a lazy bag, makes dropping and flaking the sail extremely easy. The Lucia 40 is responsive to sail, easy to tack, and can be handled easily by two sailors. With a full suite of electronics, including two chart plotters and an autopilot, she is a joy to cruise aboard. Stored on her davits is a 10ft Rigid Inflatable Dinghy with a 15hp Yamaha outboard. Quickly launched and retrieved, the dinghy will get on the plane with 2 or 3 aboard and carry up to 6 persons comfortably to your favourite snorkel spots.

The well-appointed saloon is accessed via a large sliding double door. The galley has a gas oven and a capacious 130-litre fridge.

This Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40 is the owner’s version – the three-cabin “Maestro” with three electric heads and showers. A generator can run air conditioning throughout the yacht, although with hatch breeze boosters aboard, most of the year in the BVI you can relax in the comfort of the tradewinds. The entire starboard hull is dedicated to a master suite, with an en-suite head and shower. The walk-around island Queen double aft is easy to get into, and there is a desk amidships if you need some space to work “off the grid”. The Nautitech 44 Open is the latest design in the Nautitech lineup to get really excited about!

This new design builds on the successful Nautitech ‘Open’ concept and so delivers a ‘wide grin’ sailing performance. The 44 Open is probably the fastest cruising catamaran available for a bareboat charter. She can point higher than any other cruising cat (that does not have daggerboards -which consume interior space), thanks to her high aspect sail plan, tight sheeting angles, high aspect rudders, a draft of 4ft 9“and an excellent sail area to displacement ratio. The Open 44 remains stable, comfortable, and downright fun to sail on and off the wind.

Optimized cruising speeds are a result of the low wetted surface area enabled by narrow, hydrodynamic hulls below the waterline. While the hard-chined stepped hulls above the waterline give more interior living space.

You have an unobstructed view of the sails and the sea thanks to the double aft helm station positions; you can communicate and enjoy the sailing with all the crew members in the cockpit.

In a change from the design of the Open 40, the lower mainsheet track positioning is easy to adjust and see for perfect sail trim from the helm station. A low boom above the coach roof allows for extra efficiency from the mainsail, more sail area and easy access to the sail bag. The high aspect furling, and self-tacking jib, with all control lines led aft to electric winches for both sails, means the 44 Open is a breeze to sail short-handed.

There is rich joinery in the interior of the 44 Open which gives a warm and modern ambience aboard. The cockpit flows seamlessly into the saloon (the ethos of the Open concept) giving you the ideal indoor/outdoor living space for a yacht in the tropics. The galley conjoins the saloon and cockpit, so matter where the crew are, the chef is part of the socialising. The interior saloon area is cosy and offers a modular seating arrangement with cushioned cubes that can be moved around into a day bed, a footrest, or stools. 

With the almost 360-degree view from the entrance of the saloon, you can happily escape (rare!) inclement weather or socialize at the cockpit table whilst still keeping an eye on your surroundings.

Thanks to a double-drawer fridge, cockpit fridge and freezer unit, there is excellent fridge capacity aboard.

Both hulls feature 2 cabins. The aft cabin has a queen-sized island bed and the forward cabin has a forward-facing double bed.

The seamlessly integrated companionway benefits from extra storage lockers. Both hulls have separate shower units and toilets allowing for easy living between guests. The toilet unit also has its own hand basin.

There is an integrated solar array on the coach roof as well as solar panels mounted on the dinghy davits. This removes the requirement to run your engine or generator to charge the lithium batteries on board on sunny days.

How to travel to the british virgin islands.

TRAVELING FROM MIAMI

With new direct flights from Miami (MIA) to Tortola (EIS) via American Airlines, traveling to the British Virgin Islands has never been easier.

American Airlines’ new direct flight from Miami to Tortola offers travelers increased convenience and flexibility with its well-planned flight schedule. The non-stop flights depart from Miami International Airport in the morning, allowing travelers to make the most of their day upon arrival to the British Virgin Islands. The duration of the flight is approximately three hours, ensuring a swift and efficient journey.

TRAVELING FROM SAN JUAN

The most convenient international airport to Scrub Island is in San Juan, Puerto Rico (airport code SJU).

From San Juan, catch a short connecting flight with scheduled service via Seaborne Airlines, Cape Air or interCaribbean Airways to the British Virgin Islands at Terrance B. Lettsome Airport (airport code EIS).

• Seaborne Airlines has 32-seat, air-conditioned planes and code share with Delta Airlines, American Airlines, and US Airways.
• Cape Air has small 9-seat aircraft and code share with Jet Blue Airways.
• interCaribbean Airways has a 30-seat aircraft and code share with British Airways, out of Antigua.

FLIGHTS FROM EUROPE

The easiest way to reach the British Virgin Islands from Europe is via Paris. Air France flies daily from Paris (CDG) to Sint Martin (SXM). Then you fly with Winair or Liat in about 40 minutes to Tortola (EIS).

Alternatively, Air Caraibes and Corsair also offer flights from Paris to St. Martin.

Or you can reach Tortola BVI via Miami and Puerto Rico.

TRAVELER’S INFORMATION

• Constant trade winds with average temperatures of 80-92˚ Fahrenheit provide the perfect setting for casual summer attire during daytime and nice casual nighttime attire.
• A valid passport is the principal entry requirement into the BVI. All U.S. and Canadian citizens must present a valid passport for all travel. Currency in the BVI is the U.S. Dollar.
• An environmental and tourism levy of $10 per person (3 years & older) will be collected on arrival at the ports of entry.
• There is a $50 tax for all passengers, payable on leaving the BVI by air. If you’re departing the BVI by ferry, a departure tax of $20 per person or $15 for residents is payable.
