A Look At Anchor Lockers

At first glance, having an on-deck anchor locker looks as practical as having a trunk in an automobile. It appears to be a great place to stow the rode, hide the windlass, pack up the deck brush and a bucket, and perhaps even tuck away a few bulky fenders. Coastal and inshore sailors love the locker, but offshore cruisers and racers have mixed feelings about them, especially when it comes to poorly thought-out wells that have been cleaved into a boats foredeck.

For years, we have wandered the Annapolis and Miami boat shows, peeking into anchor lockers and recording the good, the bad, and the just plain poorly designed. This photo essay comes from the scrapbook of photos weve accumulated during these dockside tours and our adventures on various boats; the accompanying commentary is gleaned from lessons learned during bluewater voyages, coastal cruises, and inshore passages.

As with all things boat-design related, choosing between an anchor setup with an on-deck locker or one with a deck spill pipe and a belowdecks chain well comes down to weighing the pros and cons based on your needs and what type of sailing the boat will be doing. Whatever your situation-whether youre buying a boat or looking to get yours properly set up-here are a few points to consider in regards to the sensible anchor locker:

  • All points of access should be able to be made watertight.
  • The lead angle of the anchor chain to the windlass expedites rodehandling rather than being set to accommodate keeping the windlass undercover.
  • There’s enough room for chain to castle (pile up as it is stripped from the windlass) and still provide a clear fall.
  • Cleat leads and opening the locker do not conflict.
  • The bitter end of the chain has a length of nylon rode connecting it to a hard point on the boat so that the rode can be untied or cut in an emergency.
  • The windlass was chosen to fit the task at hand, not just to fit the locker.

Anchor Lockers

A Dry Locker

In the chain pipe versus anchor locker debate, one of the main arguments is that a contemporary on-deck anchor locker is much more difficult-often impossible-to make watertight. The International Sailing Federations (ISAF) Offshore Special Regulations treat anchor wells as cockpit volume. This is a clear indication that watertight status is not always in the cards, and in heavy weather, inundation may involve more than the drip from a wet anchor rode.

In heavy seas, even the lockers drains can become floodwater inlets, as PS Technical Editor Ralph Naranjo discovered on a lumpy passage from Bermuda. The boats crew learned the hard way what an anchor well full of water could do to decrease buoyancy and increase the pitching moment of a Swan 48 MKII. It took the repeated efforts of crew wedged in the forepeak to pump the locker dry using a permanently installed manual bilge pump.

Sparkman & Stephens

Inspection found that the culprits were the two relatively small drain holes located just above the boats resting waterline. Through these, water gushed into the locker each time the bow plunged into a wave face.

While these drains were welcome features dockside and during coastal passages-they help keep the decks clear of anchor mud and other detritus from the depths-the euphemism locker drain takes on a whole new meaning at sea.

Lesson learned: Before going to sea, close off the anchor locker penetrations regardless of whether they’re on deck or in the hull, and regardless of whether they’re intended inlets or outlets.

Locker Design

Not all anchor lockers are created equal, as was evident during our boat-show walkabouts. Some had forward-facing anchor rode exits that were more spout-like entrances begging waves to enter; others were built in trench-like recesses that also invite water to follow a path of least resistance. Some were so shallow that only a few feet of chain rode would fit the chain box. A few doubled as a location for bow thruster relays and anchor windlass electrical accoutrements.

A Look At Anchor Lockers

Placing a windlass in the recess of a well is walking the fine line of compromise. The upside is an uncluttered deck; the downside includes limited chain fall-the distance between the chain gypsy and the locker bottom-which can lead to problems with chain castling and links jamming in the gypsy.

Perhaps the biggest drawback is that in the event the locker floods during a passage, the windlass, solenoid, and junction box may be submerged for hours or days at a time. If the anchor windlass breaker has been left on, the stray current corrosion can be a very big deal, especially aboard aluminum boats.

And then theres the anchor lid. Boat designers often wrestle with how it should open and how it will function in concert with lines and cleats. The importance of a well thought-out design was highlighted during one PS editors recent charter aboard a 40-some footer.

The boat was anchored using a chain/rope rode secured to a twin set of cleats just aft of the anchor locker. When a formidable 0300 squall rolled in and the crew needed to get out a second anchor, they soon realized it was stowed in the on-deck locker, and the primary anchors rode ran straight across the locker lid, barring access. The rope rode, tight as a guitar string in the gale, would have to be rerun before the crew could extract the second anchor. In order to simply open the locker, the crew had to attach a line to the primary rode, put a block on the rail, and as the rode was slipped from the cleat, another crew transferred the tension to a cockpit winch.

A Look At Anchor Lockers

Lesson learned: Be sure theres no conflict between cleat leads and the lockers opening; if there is, store essential gear elsewhere.

Construction Inspection

A peek into an anchor locker can give you a good idea of the boats construction quality. A boats stem area is usually free of laminate-hiding liners, and the curious consumer can see how well controlled the layup was, how the hull-to-deck joint was made, and what efforts were made to spread the loads linked to attached hardware. So while you scrutinize the line locker, also take a look at how the boat was built.

This quick inspection could save you from big headaches down the road, as one delivery skipper discovered. He learned the hard way how some production boatbuilders cope with putting a lid (the deck) on a very big box (a boat). The better the builder, the tighter the fit. More hurried builders over-trim bulkheads and some even allow them to float. And that is exactly what made life miserable for the delivery skipper and his crew.

Anchor Locker

As they beat to windward and their anchor locker filled, the water discovered the bad hull-to-deck fit and the builders less-than-careful tabbing. In effect, it was the exact opposite of how a collision or watertight bulkhead should be constructed, and the result was a leak that was nearly as threatening as a crack in the hull.

Lesson learned: If the boat you own-or the one you are about to buy-has an anchor well, check carefully and see how its sealed off from the rest of the boat. Also check sealed wire-run leads and all bulkhead penetrations.

Anchor Locker

By no means is this a condemnation of the concept of an anchor well. For coastal cruisers and offshore sailors, it can work, but its important to consider the points we’ve covered here. Every builder varies in their approach to locker design and construction, so give any boat you’re potentially buying close scrutiny to be sure the anchor locker has been well thought-out and well built. If you already own a boat, be sure it is up to the task at hand.

The contemporary anchor locker setup favors clear-deck convenience. This compromise can have some serious disadvantages. As with most things on sailboats, boat owners/buyers have to weigh the pros and cons and find a balance that meets their needs.

A Look At Anchor Lockers

Anchor lockers are a convenience to coastal cruisers but no friend to offshore sailors. Passagemakers often forgo a deck-clearing locker for a belowdecks anchor-chain well. An angled spill pipe leads the anchor chain from the deck to the well, which often is under the forepeak and behind a watertight bulkhead. The setup not only eliminates the flooded-bow worries inherent with an on-deck locker, but it also moves the chain and anchors’ weight lower and further aft, where it should be to avoid hobby-horsing.

To keep water out of the belowdecks chain box, you first must keep water from pouring down the spill pipe. We have heard of numerous methods to seal the deck hole—from Silly Putty and duct tape to threaded brass caps and rags—and most of them work in most conditions. The holestopper methods PS contributors have found to be effective in even the heaviest of weather (when a boarding sea can create a fire-hose effect) include:

Teak plug : Sized to fit the deck hole and about 6 inches long, with an eye for attaching the chain to the bottom (after it’s removed from the anchor) and a fitting on top for pulling it out later (which may have to be done with a halyard). As the wood gets wet, it swells to seal the hole. PS contributors and circumnavigators Evans Starzinger and Beth Leonard use a Delrin plug in the same way, but they bed it with silicone before getting underway.

Closed-cell foam (from a cushion, Nerf ball, or the Forespar TruPlug): PS Technical Editor and bluewater sailor Ralph Naranjo suggests squeezing closed-cell foam “like a rubber rivet into the aperture.”

Other tried-and-proven methods include leaving the anchor on and spraying canned expanding foam insulation into the hole (this dislodges easily when the anchor is dropped); shoving a tennis ball into the chain-pipe (for a chain still attached to a bow anchor, split the ball half-way and pass the chain through it); cramming a rag into the hole and spraying foam insulation over it.

If like most of us you leave the chain on the gypsy of the windless the chain naturally is IN the hole To the chain box so completely sealing it is next to impossible BUT does it need to be? In my case The chain box never gets more water in it then the bilge pump can pump out so a drain from the chain box to a deeper bilge with a automatic pump takes care of the amount of water getting through the chain hole. In fact even when waves are coming over the bow little water gets down that hole. Then I would expect everyone has rope spliced on to the end of their chain rode (personally I have 100 feet of it. And it’s spliced NOT shackled because a chain shackle won’t fit through the whole nor will it fit in the gypsy when transition from the chain to rope. (Rarely ever exceed my anchor chain BUT if needed to anchor in a deep anchorage I have a additional 100feet of rope rode) the end of that rope has a eye splice and THAT is attached to a shackle attached to the backing plate of the windless. I used to use sections of foam pool noodle split around the chain to close up the hole but I found so little water actually entered in that hole. It wasn’t worth the effort. My windless also is not at the very bow like some ether and it takes some pretty big waves to get to the hole, ( the whole foredeck would have to go under to submerge the windless and and then stay submerged for enough water to over load my bilge pump.

now originally the factory setup was no windless and a very shallow anchor locker that might fit a small danforth anchor a short length of chain and 100-150 feet of rope rode. It drained well under the clipper bow BUT this is no longer my primary anchor @and the primary anchor chain is not stored there.

I have two such danforth anchors on board in addition to my primary mantis anchor one is store in the original anchor locker the other secured in the aft locker. With a extra length of mooring chain so I can make up multiple anchor setups. (Or if my primary anchor and chain rode get hung up somehow that I was forced to cut it free and loose my primary anchor I have two backups until I can get a new primary.

All in all a all chain rode (with a rope rode added to the end) and a windless mounted further back from the bow and directing the chain down to a anchor box low and further back then the immediate bow is by far a better setup then small on deck recessed anchor boxes ) but I guess when these designers designed these little on deck anchor stowage it was for those who’s boats are NOT left at anchor they day sail out of a marina and maybe anchor up at a beach for the day do some swimming the pull the anchor up and head back to their slip . They also stay at the marina when heavy seas anencephaly big waves are forecast. So the design is perfect for them but no offshore cruising boat if it was actually designed as one (or redesigned well) has much use for a shallow on deck anchor locker.

Everything you need to know about a yacht’s gas system

Having LPG on board increases the chances of a life-threatening incident, so it makes sense to ensure your gas system is installed and maintained to the highest standard. Duncan Kent reports

Earlier this year, the UK’s largest supplier of portable LPG cylinders, Calor, expressed its intention to discontinue its very popular 3.9kg propane and 4.5kg butane cylinders. However, after much pleading by user groups throughout the country it has now agreed to phase them out more gradually, allowing cylinders that remain in good condition to be refilled for a while longer. It suggests users upgrade to its 7kg bottle. Unfortunately, apart from being too big to fit most boat gas lockers, this will also mean more expense when buying the larger cylinder and regulator to go with it.

There are a few voices in online boating groups suggesting you simply refill your existing 3.9/4.5kg bottles from larger cylinders using a cheap decanting kit. However, self-refilling is against the law and can be extremely dangerous.

The LPG cylinders remain the property of the suppliers, who are the only authorities approved to refill them. The task is carried out under strict controls, thereby ensuring total safety for both its own staff and the end user.

Commonly available alternatives to Calor are Flogas and Campingaz, although their sizes don’t match exactly, and the latter is expensive in the UK.

Butane and propane

The two types of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) available in portable cylinders and suited for use on a boat are butane and propane. The former frequently comes in blue cylinders and is the most common gas used on boats. It has a higher calorific value than propane and burns more efficiently, but it operates at a lower pressure (28mb) than propane (37mb), so their regulators are not interchangeable.

Propane cylinders are more commonly orange in colour and are often used by long-term cruisers as they are available in larger sizes and can be stored on deck without freezing. It’s essential to select the correct regulator to suit the type and capacity of LPG and cylinder you intend to use.

Modern technology has made the use of LPG onboard much safer than in the past. The elimination of pilot flames and devices such as flame failure detectors fitted to cookers and heaters has greatly reduced the risk of gas escape.

That said, butane and propane are heavier than air, so when it does leak it sinks and collects in the lowest point of the boat, the bilges. For this reason, it’s important to have a manual bilge pump even if you also have an electric one, as activating the latter in the event of a gas leak could cause an explosion.

There are strict rules in most countries governing the installation and maintenance of gas systems on a boat and these should always be adhered to if making any changes to the original system or reinstalling from scratch.

Gas lockers must be vented overboard and never used to store other items

A safe marine gas installation starts with the gas cylinder storage locker, which must be vented overboard and not simply into a drained cockpit (as was common on many boats from the 1960s-1980s). The vent/drainpipe must be at least 19mm in diameter and should be taken from the lowest point in the locker.

It should be led directly to an open hull skin fitting (no seacocks or valves) and should exit well above sea level. The gas compartment’s lid should also be sealed in the event the drain becomes blocked and gas collects in the locker itself. This seal also helps keep water and debris out.

Older boats rarely had dedicated gas lockers, but there are numerous GRP inserts available that can be retrofitted into a cockpit locker or they can be custom made. Annoyingly, they are often sized to only hold a single cylinder, meaning any spares have to be stowed securely elsewhere in the boat. Unconnected cylinders rarely leak, though, so spares don’t necessarily need to be stored in a vented locker, although it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Note that LPG cylinders must always be stowed upright or you risk liquid gas running down the pipe, causing a dangerous flareup at the appliance.

Finally, nothing else must be stowed in the gas locker in case movement dislodges an item, which damages the pipe or cylinder, or blocks the drain.

Maintenance

Although mandatory for inland waterways craft, regulated by the UK Boat Safety Scheme (BSS), there is, surprisingly, no current UK-wide legal requirement for privately owned, sea-going cruising yachts under 24m to abide by the EU’s Recreational Craft Directive (RCD), or the UK’s equivalent (RCR).

That said, it can only be sensible to have your gas system checked regularly for its adherence to the latest safety regulations and to ensure there are no dangerous areas of wear in your system, such as out of date hoses or rusty hose clips.

You can install your own gas system — but it must be tested by a qualified gas engineer before use

Installation

It is perfectly acceptable, and indeed legal, to carry out the gas system installation on a boat yourself, provided you have a Gas Safe qualified engineer to inspect and pressure test it before you turn it on for the first time.

As much as possible, gas should be run through rigid copper pipe (usually 8mm or 3/8in diameter), all the way from the regulator to within 1m of the appliance. When penetrating the gas bottle locker, a proper bulkhead compression fitting should be used to keep the locker gas-tight. It will also provide a tail fitting for connection to the flexible hose from the regulator.

Requirements

The appliance end of the pipe should be terminated with an isolation tap, from which a short length (<1m) of correctly rated (BS3212/2) flexible, armoured hose, connects directly to the appliance. Note that all flexible gas hose is date-stamped and should be replaced every five years, or earlier if any wear or damage is visible. Any joins or connections must be done using the relevant compression joints with copper olives, not soldered or push-fit types.

No jointing compounds or PTFE tape sealants must be used in making the joints. The pipe must also be supported at regular intervals, usually 150-200mm, along its run. More support may be needed on corners and through bulkheads, and the latter should be protected from chafing, either by a grommet or by wrapping plastic hose around the copper pipe.

Using the correct tools, such as proper pipe benders and cutters, will avoid the risks of cracking the pipe or making poor joints that might leak. It’s worth using a marine-rated regulator too, as the typical camping device will not last long in a salty marine environment.

Under the gas installation regulations for modern yachts, it is mandatory to provide a manual shut-off valve near the appliance. However, I prefer to have the additional security of a remotely switched valve positioned immediately where the gas pipe exits the bottle locker. The latter are ignition-protected and can be activated from a switch below decks, which ensures that gas build-up from a leak between the bottle and any manual valve beside the cooker is prevented.

Check all connections regularly

It is also handy for shutting the gas off without going outside. Note, a ‘latching’ type gas shut-off valve will consume around a third of the power when active than a non-latching variant.

Cooking and heating

The most common gas appliance found on a boat is a cooker. Sometimes you also find gas hot air heaters, such as the Propex models, and sometimes water heaters or old 3-way fridges. The latter two are now rare on sea-going boats, thankfully, as they usually require an external flue, which is almost impossible to make watertight.

Modern cookers should all have flame failure devices fitted. These are thermocouples positioned in the flame that keep the gas valve open provided it always detects the heat of the flame. If the flame should go out it shuts off the gas supply locally, eliminating the risk of gas build-up escaping in a draught.

Cookers are a main culprit when it comes to gas leaks, so ensure your crew know how to use yours safely

Gas heating in boats is relatively rare, although hot-air blowers such as the Propex range, which are designed for trucks and vehicles, are fine if installed correctly using marinised parts.

Diesel-fired heating systems, made by the likes of Eberspächer, Webasto, Wallas and Autoterm, are by far the most common in boats and much safer than using LPG. Cheap Chinese-made diesel heaters are everywhere online, but care needs to be taken when installing and often expensive marinisation needs to be carried out to make them safe for use on a boat, particularly the exhaust system.

On-demand gas water heaters are only used in houseboats and inland watercraft these days. They are rarely found in modern sea-going craft, where water is usually heated via the engine heat exchanger and a calorifier.

Flame-failure detectors have greatly reduced the risk of gas leaks

Silent killer

The problem with any form of gas heater when used in an enclosed space is the risk of a lethal build-up of carbon monoxide (CO), which is a silent killer that takes many lives every year.

The fumes tend to come from portable gas cookers designed for external use that are moved inside in poor weather to cook on or to provide heat. CO fumes can also be created by poorly maintained cooker rings, which can be signalled by yellow-coloured flames.

Another less lethal by-product of burning gas inside is prolific condensation, which can make life on board unhealthy and unpleasant.

To conclude, never run open flame gas devices below decks without ensuring adequate ventilation is available, and always fit at least one CO alarm as well as an LPG detector.

Gas safety routine

Like many aspects of running a yacht, it’s a good idea to create a procedure for gas safety that all on board can learn and abide by. Some even put such details up on a notice where it can be clearly seen, such as inside the gas locker lid or by the cooker. Even if you have manual and remotely switched shut-off valves fitted, it is still safer to turn the gas off at the bottle when not in use.

No valve can prevent a leak from a dodgy regulator. Should you suspect a leak, alert everyone on board and get them all off quickly. Ensure the gas is turned off at the bottle and do not turn anything electrical on or off as even a small spark could ignite any gas. Open all hatches wide and lift up the sole boards wherever possible to allow good air flow through the boat, then manually pump out the bilges if you can.

Assessing the Build Quality of an Anchor Locker

It’s hidden away under a hatch at the bow, but what’s inside can say a lot about your boat. Of course, there are certain things to look for in an anchor locker to help the stowed anchor inside do its job, but it also can reveal much about the quality of your boat’s construction. Take a look inside the anchor locker shown here, from a Regulator 41, to get an idea of what to look for in a quality build.

[1]Gas-Assisted Struts

Gas-assisted struts or shocks that hold open the hatch are essential for keeping your hands free to work the anchor. The last thing you want in rough seas is to have one hand holding up the hatch while you work ­inside the locker.

A gasketed hatch ensures a snug fit with the anchor locker and helps prevent rattling or pounding while underway. It also helps prevent water intrusion into the locker from the deck.

[3]Self-Draining Gutter

The gutter around the locker’s opening prevents water intrusion from the deck, and the two drains help the water quickly exit so that it doesn’t collect. Pooling water in an anchor locker can cause mildew and damage the anchor line.

[4]Easy Access to the Anchor Rode

Note how Regulator made a cutaway in the locker to access the anchor rode. This is essential to manage any issues with the anchor chain or kinks in the line that can jam up the works, particularly when dealing with an electric windlass.

[5]Chain Stop

Every anchor locker, whether it has a windlass or requires manual deployment of the anchor, should have a chain stop to hold the anchor in place while it’s being stowed so that it doesn’t accidentally cut loose and drop under the boat while you’re running. 

[6]Rode Washdown

Not every boat has this, but the Regulator 41 installs a washdown hose in the anchor locker so that you can rinse dirt and debris off the anchor rode and the anchor ­itself as you haul it in or it gets weighed by the windlass.

While a boat without a windlass can still possibly have a ­high-quality anchor locker, having one properly installed—as shown here—sure makes life easier when you’re on the water.

While many boats still employ a pulpit at the bow of the boat, a lot of high-end builders now fit the bow with a through-stem anchor roller that stows the hook in place at the bow externally. This equipment keeps the anchor and rode out of sight and allows for cleaner lines. This setup also prevents the anchor-rode line from chafing your gunwale topside at the bow.

The hatch on the ­Regulator is finished, gelcoated fiberglass on both sides, as is the anchor locker’s interior, a sure sign of high-quality construction.

 What You Don’t See

Looking at a boat as well-built as the Regulator 41, you won’t find any rough, unfinished fiberglass when you lift the hatch. You also won’t find any exposed, sagging or sloppily run wiring in the ­anchor locker.

Yacht Refit: Anchor Chain Locker Design

I´ve finally made it! Eventually another item can be crossed off my list of to-dos in the King´s Cruiser 33 refit and I am very happy. You see, a yacht´s refit is a huge project that can sometimes (no, let´s be honest: often) really eat up your enthusiasm, sometimes even faster than it eats up your budget – by the way, here´s a nice article about a yacht refit project (finished happily) but in retrospective the young couple describes exactly what I feel now: Read “Black hole yacht” here . Anyway, here´s what made me happy today:

No, not the filthy chain locker, this is where I started some weeks ago when I originally wanted to prepare the boat for it´s transport to the new marina. Read the first article on the anchor chain locker refit here . I opened the chain locker and discovered this huge flying insects nest. Well, the crawling tiny lifeforms had been building their home all the way up from the bottom of the chain locker, all around anchor chain and anchor line to the top. Apart from that, I did have to refurbish the whole chain locker anyway because 45 years of constant use had left marks in the structure. And this is how the locker looks now, as of today:

Now, isn´t this a nice piece? As one of my facebook-friends commented: “Even prettier than at home!” And right he is! This second article of my anchor chain locker-series is about adding some distinctive facts, the anchor chain length calculation and the fitting of the brand new anchor chain locker of my sailing yacht. I hope that there are some practical hints in it for your own projects. Here we go …

Rubber coating the anchor chain locker´s bottom

At first, after having the anchor chain locker completely cleaned and sanded and painted with five layers of primer and Danboline bilge paint I thought this would be enough for a place where nobody would ever have to live with comfort. But then I thought back to a sailing trip in a Beneteau First 30 (read it here) – steaming headway against waves and winds I desperately tried to find some rest. In the fore cabin (LINK). In each wave the heavy anchor chain was lifted and pounded back into the locker with a huge, loud, deafening bang. So, maybe, I thought, I can do at least something about it …

Securing the edges with masking tape all around where the chain was expected to lay at rest in the locker, I searched the internet for a kind of coating that would on the one hand be tough enough to withstand the sanding-effects of the heavy chain and on the other hand would kind of dampening noise and scratching at the hull. I found a product called Plasti Dip , which essentially is liquid rubber. Let´s give it a try!

Alongside the two cans each containing 200 grams of liquid rubber I bought the special thinner because some of the comments at the product in amazon.com suggested that the neat product could not be painted with a brush. I tried a solution of 1:5 approximately and therefore could stretch the contents of one and a half cans of liquid rubber to five layers at the end, which is great.

Apart from the awful smell – rubber plus thinner is one hell of a mixture! – I was at first very much disappointed by the effect. The first layer barely covered the surface, just adding a very, very thin greyish layer. Nevertheless, once having started, I couldn´t abort so I waited for a couple of minutes (this stuff dries out quickly!) to add a second, then a third and finally a fourth and fifth layer. And behold: The outcome was awesome!

After five layers of applying the thinned solution of liquid rubber I had achieved a decent, dark black coat of rubber. It took some further 30 minutes to harden to a semi-dry state and I was very much delighted by the outcome. I´d say that these five layers do add up to a thickness of roughly half a millimetre, which was cool for me. But then, as if the mighty God of Refit always has to show his powers, I partially destroyed the upper edges of the newly coat when I tried to take off the masking tape.

The rubber coating was so thick and dried that fast that the upper edge frazzled and – having no choice at all – I had to rip off the whole stuff and thus destroyed the fine line. That was a kind of setback but upon closer examination I figured that the frazzles wouldn´t be such a great problem as the adhesive forces of the not-really-dried rubber were enough to re-attach the detached parts. Later I added a thick band of very strong fiber ribbon tape all around so that I again got a nice straight black line and everything was cool again. Then I painted the last remaining half bottle (without thinner and it IS indeed brushable!) with undiluted rubber coating so that in the end I got one millimetre of rubber.

So, that was it for the rough parts in the refurbishment of the anchor chain locker. All in all some 10 working hours net went into this project and I was really amazed by the outcome of this quick side-step. As usual, tackling on item reveals two more on the list and that´s initially how I came to this project. Anyway, now that I was working here in the bow, I thought, let´s finish it completely.

A new anchor chain

My boss recently donated a brand new anchor chain after I helped clearing the stock of our company (thanks so much again!) and since this chain was 50 metres long I cut it to a nice 30 metres chunk. I would say that having 30 metres of anchor chain is more than sufficient for cruisers up to 40 feet and since my boat is just 33 feet this is more than enough for the boat. My pre-owners even kept 10 metres less in the King´s Cruiser and at least the man from whom I bought this boat didn´t tell of any problems.

Nevertheless, having brought these 30 metres to the boat I laid up the full length of the chain right at the bow of my yacht and standing up there and contemplating the chain I was puzzled and fascinated by seeing and realizing the fact of how long actually 30 metres really are and – in contrast – how thin even a strong 12 mm-chain is in relation to the tons of moving boat which this chain is going to hold safe and tight even in foul weather conditions. Amazing!

Thinking back of our anchoring manoeuvres in Croatia some weeks ago I remembered the “trick” seen aboard this yacht and I marked the first and the last links of the chain with red (rust resistant!) color: In this I would be able to always identify the start and the end of the chain. I also marked the 10 and 20 metres-links with one (for 10 metres) and two (for 20 metres) stripes. I think having these is a good indicator in case I later don´t need to have the whole chain on the ground and – because I don´t have an electric windlass – to see how much chain is still to be hauled back aboard.

A new anchor line was bought as well. The old one, although in an acceptable condition, was pretty raunchy by the insects´s having made their nest all around it. I tried to clean the line in my washing machine but that wasn´t a good idea. So brand new 30 metres of dedicated anchor line have been bought. I paid heed to the fact that the line would have an eye with a metal inlay – by means of shackle this eye will later be connected to the anchor chain. Talking of an eye …

I also bought a brand new swivel shackle to later attach the anchor to the chain. Most people use a single shackle but I think having a shackle with a rotating centrepiece will make it easier to prevent the chain from being twisted and will add more safety because the anchor is able to spin freely. Securing the anchor line with a shackle to one of the bolts of the forestay chain plate was the last action to take here.

Ready to anchor away!

So, am I now ready to let the anchor away? Pretty much yeah! I will take aboard the anchor when the boat is hitting the water (hopefully next season) and after hoisting aboard the new chain there is just one item left to be done: In order to connect the gas bottles I will install a brand new pressure reducer and piping of the gas circuit of my boat. But this is a different story. In the end I am very proud of having finished this thing off my list and that I can focus again back on working on the interior things still left undone.

I am so much looking forward to using the anchor in a quiet, remote bay somewhere off a tiny Island – it wouldn´t have to be far away, Denmark, some 6 hours of sailing from my home port away, will perfectly do – but it will have to be remote. And quiet. Because that´s what being at anchorage is all about: Feeling the gentle motion of the nice waves, listening to the sound of the water and having just oneself (and maybe a loved one) to enjoy it.
