Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill reopens

By valarie harring - | jul 12, 2023.

the boathouse cape coral yacht club

Cathy Zellers enjoys some breakfast, and the view of the Caloosahatchee, at the re-opened Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill Tuesday. She praised the renovations but said the destruction at the park remains a sad thing to take in. Valarie Harring

For Blaise Adams and David Barden, the reopening of the Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill meant two things: some long-awaited breakfast favorites and the return of a weekday tradition.

Seated at a table on the deck overlooking the river where the Cape Coral Yacht Club pier previously dominated the waterfront, the two chatted with server Kayla Sallee, just one of the attentive crew who looked as happy as customers heralding the restaurant’s return following months of repairs in the wake of Hurricane Ian.

Adams ordered French toast, “as always.” Barden had the breakfast burrito.

“I just posted to Instagram,” Adams said when asked what he ordered Tuesday morning, the day after the grand reopening this week. “I put, ‘286 days we waited for breakfast.’ We come here every Tuesday.”

“We love it,” Barden said.

Cathy Zellers, a regular who has a family member among the returning staff, was also enjoying some breakfast as well as the unobstructed view offered at seats along the rail.

“It’s gorgeous,” she said of the effort to restore the open-air eatery, once featured on the Travel Channel’s “Food Paradise,” to its pre-storm glory.

She gazed out to where the pier, built by the city’s founders, stood for more than 60 years before storm surge from Hurricane Ian wreaked havoc along the Cape’s Gold Coast, flooding homes and scattering boats from docks and the Yacht Club’s marina slips like so many kiddy tub toys.

“It’s beautiful, but it’s sad to look at that,” Zellers said of the pier pilings and wreckage breaking the surface of the Caloosahatchee. “They did an awesome job fixing this up.”

Monday’s reopening was the best “first day” of which he’s ever been a part, said Boathouse General Manger Jay Collins, who added it took a lot of effort to get there.

Not only were there extensive repairs to be made to the building and restaurant’s sandy bit of beachfront, but a team to rebuild among returning and new staff members as well as some menu tweaks.

Perhaps the greatest challenge, though, may have been the location as the Yacht Club complex, with the exception of the leased restaurant site and some parking, remains closed.

Collins thanked the city for its efforts in helping get the business get back open.

“I’d classify it as a great success,” Collins said of the months-long effort to repair and re-open in the wake of the Sept. 28 Category 5 hurricane. “A few bumps along the way, but we did good.”

He was asked how much the effort cost.

“A lot,” he said. “It’s a big number, a lot of zeros.”

The city is looking at a big number as well, as officials have deemed the rest of the historic complex too costly to repair.

On June 14 the elected board voted 6-1 in favor of a resolution that states “Due to damage caused by Hurricane Ian to existing facilities at the Cape Coral Yacht Club, the City will be demolishing all existing structures and site features onsite.”

Council authorized $263,000 for additional design services for the “deconstructive preservation of the buildings” as well as for replacement design for the fuel tanks that service the marina and boaters that use park facilities.

According to the city website, “deconstructive preservation” means “the city plans to proceed with plans to deconstruct the Yacht Club Ball Room building while saving elements for reuse in the new facilities.”

Demolition is expected to begin in October.

Meanwhile, the still-closed Yacht Club Beach has a planned re-opening date of Aug. 31, pending state and federal permitting. The existing restrooms, two pavilions and the playground will be removed.

The public boat ramp, the marina and all other Yacht Club Community Park amenities will remain closed.

The Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill is at 5819 Driftwood Parkway.

Boat House Tiki Bar & Grill - Cape Coral

Ratings and reviews, food and ambience, location and contact.

I agree with the earlier reviewer who recommends that you "Go for the view and beach access, not the food." (Thanks, jp2558) The views are nice. The seating is comfortable. The service is fast, friendly, and accurate. The food is good, but not great. It's... just a hunch, but it seems that the Boat House is treating its food as of secondary importance to the facility's location and views. If the food was kicked up a notch, this place would be the bomb! More

Our food isn't intended to play second fiddle to the view around here, but we can't argue that the view isn't tough to beat. We're always looking to kick things up a notch on a daily basis, so if you ever decide to swing by... More

Basically just your average bar food. We went for breakfast which is advertised as being served between eight and eleven AM, however starting at ten they only serve what is on the ‘last call’ menu, which appears to be what they can make out of... leftover scrambled eggs, and whatever potatoes and other fixings that are left over from the earlier patrons. The coffee was very good and turned out to be the best part of the meal. More

Our breakfast is actually served from 8 AM to 10:30 AM every day, so we're sorry if there was any confusion in that regard. It seems like you caught the tail end of service, which is why you might've had some of what we had... More

The location is great. You can seat outside, is right on the beach and you have ana amazing view of the coast. We order fried calamari and they were really really tiny and the portion pretty small for $9.99. Then we decided to order large fried... prawns and curly fries: there were 8/9 normal size prawns ( really good prawns) and except for a couple of proper curl fries the other were a lot of little dry fries pieces $13.99. We had 2 beers (local) and a cocktail, all of them not bad at all. The service was great, fast and the waitress was always there taking care of us. I would only go back for the position and to have a drink, but not to eat. More

We're so glad you enjoyed our great location and amazing view. As for the food, it's disappointing to hear you didn't enjoy the portions or the fries. We'll find something you will love on your next visit. Best, The Boat House Team

Was here while on vacation with family and came here for dinner after a recommendation, and this place was great! We sat out on the deck, plenty of room between other tables, staff was compliant with masks and following guidelines, and really enjoyed the ambiance... and beautiful views! Our server, Amber, was outstanding! She was very attentive, we shared lots of laughs with her, had a great dinner and drinks, and she even helped modify a dish for my daughter with special needs. They had a guy singing some catchy tunes, and it was truly an enjoyable experience. We will definitely be back! If you go, ask for Amber, she is such a delightful person! More

We're thrilled to hear how much you enjoyed everything from our ambience to our beautiful views. You can always count on our team for outstanding, friendly service, and we'll be sure to pass your kind words along to Amber. Looking forward to having you back... More

The location is great, great views and if you eat on the beach you can run your feet thru the sand. The wait staff is very friendly and the waitress we had was fantastic. The food isn't anything amazing that sets this place apart really.... It's known for its location, atmosphere, live music and some fruity drinks they put in big jugs you can take home. We were very disappointed that upon our arrival there was no one to greet us. Yes they said hi, but when I told them we needed a table they said to go fend for yourself. I saw many people just standing over tables in which people were about to leave. They really should go to a hostess based system and provide their customers with better service seating them. The free for all approach works well if your a dive bar, but this is far from that. Add a hostess and I'd be inclined to give this place another star or so... More

It's always a great time when you combine food, drinks, and the beach. We're happy you came by and enjoyed yourself and our views, and we're sorry that our seating system was a bit chaotic during your visit. Making sure all of our guests are... More

We were at the Boat House on January 4, 2021 for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed it. They have a nice variety on the menu The food was excellent, the attention was personal (our waitress even took our picture before and after bringing our lunch) The... view of the river and marina was a great background. The grounds are beautiful, well cared-for and nicely landscaped. More

Today, we went to restaurant for a birthday celebration. The atmosphere is fun, they were busy but not extreme and our waitress was great....I didn't get her name unfortunately. The food on the other hand was a disaster. The crab cake appetizer was burnt on... one side (of course, the side down). Our meals were simple with grouper or shrimp baskets. The grouper baskets were terrible....cold and fish tough/rubbery. We sent them back and waitress apologized saying that kitchen was struggling that night. The shrimp was luke warm but edible. We had another round of drinks and waited another 25-30 minutes and no replacement. We asked for our bill and she removed grouper meals. She apologized many times over. I gave her large tip as problem was not her fault. Disappointed! More

We're sorry you didn't enjoy your experience. Guest satisfaction is our top priority. We would like to remedy the situation and earn a second chance to provide you with excellent service. Please email us at [email protected] so we can discuss it further. We hope to... More

We had family visiting from out of town on June 5 and traveled by boat to The Boathouse in Cape Coral. We were a party of four. There was no one waiting ahead of us to be seated and no employee at the entrance other... than the girl at the t-shirt counter. We approached her, she was very friendly ,and told us to go in and sit anywhere. There were several empty tables and we chose one. A server approached us and asked if the hostess had seated us as they usually give out the menus. We explained that she did not. She said that she would be right back with menus. Then another employee approached our table and told us we would have to leave our table and go see the hostess to be seated. We explained that no one was at the hostess stand and that another employee told us to choose a table. He said that we could not stay at our table per his managers orders. As mentioned, there were several empty tables in the restaurant and no one waiting in line to be seated. Our family has a strong background in the restaurant and hospitality business as owners, managers, and servers and found this treatment of customers appalling. Management should have seen that the hostess station was staffed and if he/she had a message to convey that included uprooting potentially paying customers it should have been conveyed by management and not by wait staff or a bus boy. We will spend our money elsewhere and will not be back. More

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your visit. We sincerely apologize that your overall experience with us was not to your liking. Food & service quality is extremely important to us and we’d never want our guests to leave unsatisfied. We... More

We've been going to Boat House Tiki on a weekly basis ever since it opened and enjoyed that you could just walk in, find a table, sit and enjoy great service. First come, first served always seemed to work well. That has all changed, and... not in a good way. We (a party of 2) visited yesterday and found that now there are signs saying you have to see the hostess for seating. OK, no problem, we went down and the girl told us it was a 20 minute wait. We asked if we could just sit at the railing and she said yes. So we sat on the top deck (because it's non-smoking). While we sat there we noticed there were 3 tables that were empty. So why was there a wait if the tables were empty? The tables remained empty during our whole stay (at least and hour since the service has gone down hill as well). I'm not sure why management changed the seating policy, but it's not being managed well for their patrons or their servers who rely on tips. More

I received our text confirmation, so we went to see the hostess who sat us at our table. We had a nice server who took our order and menus. Before getting our tea and lemonade, a male employee abruptly asked if we checked in with... the hostess and we told him we did and that she seated us here. Obviously he did not believe us and demanded to know who our waitress was, so we told him. Continuing to harass us, he asked where our menus were and we told him the waitress took them after we placed our order. As it turns out, some other people sat at another table without seeing the hostess. Our waitress apologized for the “misunderstanding”, but not once did the man ever apologize to us. If you want to be harassed, then look no further than this place. I am equally disappointed with this restaurant as I did not receive a response from them after sending in a complaint. Apparently, they do not take customer complaints seriously. More

We stopped here for lunch while vacationing in Cape Coral. We were seated on the railing directly facing the gulf coast. It was a beautiful view! We ordered a chicken sandwich and a salad. My salad was soggy and hard to eat. Our server never... checked on us after taking our order and she wasn’t the one who delivered our food either. When she finally came to check on us our plates we nearly cleared and our drinks were empty. I handed her my card and asked to be checked out. Maybe we ordered the wrong food? Maybe they were understaffed? The only reason this place gets a 3 is for the view and my drink was decent. Probably won’t give it a second chance. More

Per our friend's recommendation, we had the coconut shrimp and curly fries basket. The shrimp were cooked perfectly and it was a very generous platter. The service was excellent, and the water views were great with boats on the waterway. They could use some ceiling... fans to move the air on a hot day, We had ice tea due to a lot of driving. Children can use the pool for free! We can't wait to return. More

Thank you for stopping by, Ken! We're glad you enjoyed your visit and we hope to see you back for more fun by the water!

Went for drinks and lunch. They have daily drink specials and they were very good. I wanted a mixed strawberry daiquiri / piña colada which they said they were not able to make for me but I get that would be “more work”. Food is... just ok- alligator was a lot of breading, side salad was verrrrry small. Rice and beans were good but once again a very small portion for the price. Aside from that, the vibe is amazing- sunshine, waterfront, live music. Would def return on a future trip but wouldn’t go there expecting much from the food. 🍹 More

FAIR WARNING... Today 11/22/20 at 9:50 we were enjoying our breakfast outdoors at the rail here at the boathouse. Social distancing appeared to be practice. Then they seated a party of 10 non mask folks right up against our seats. Although this is not against... any law in FL it is the CDCs guidelines posted on 11/14/20, for safe outdoor dining. The Boat House is clearly interested in profits vs Patron and staff safety. We love this place but sadly we’re done with them until COVID subsides. Fair Warning to all. More

Our first night in town, having come in from an early morning flight in a mostly shut down, somewhat cooler state, we wanted to be outside as much as possible! Found this place close to where we were staying and also that it was close... to the pier for sunsets. We had to wait about 20 minutes for a table, so not too bad. Got a seat on the lower deck, closer to the pier/beach and it was perfect. It gets really windy at times, so we were down from the wind a little bit, which was nice. I had the chicken tacos, which we were really good. My husband had the Cuban which was good too. And our son, who was quit hungry, demolished the Chicken bacon ranch sandwich in about 4 minutes! I can say, for both of our meals, the chicken was really good! Just a nice place to sit and enjoy some music, they had a guy singing all sorts of typical tropical/beach type songs. And you can enjoy the people hanging at the beach still, but it's not crowded with people there. Then take a walk on the pier to catch the full sunset. More

WHAT OUR MEMBERS THINK

I recently bought a 2021 Supra from the Boathouse Marina. Brandon was my salesman and did a Supra job. He gave us a rundown of the boat and all its accessories in the showroom and took us out not once but twice before we pulled the trigger. We also got a full-day orientation on the water. Brandon was super knowledgeable, and friendly and the communication was superb. I don’t think I’d ever buy a boat from a different dealer after our experience!

I bought my boat in November at the Fort Myers boat show. I am extremely happy. Great staff, great people, great company!! It was a new venture for me and I have nothing but praise for the Boat house. They bend over backwards to make their customers happy and I believe that separates them from the rest of the firms. I’d like to thank them personally for their outreach of great support and help!

Colt was great. He showed us everything we needed and gave us all the time we needed to look and make our decision— no hard sell. Brandon was the same at closing, everything was explained, and no hard sell. They kept our boat for weeks on a lift until we were ready to take it home. Anything I’ve needed since Colt has got back to me immediately with answers and help. I am confident our relationship will continue like this and would recommend them to anyone looking for a boat they deal with.

If you are in the market for buying a boat I would highly recommend that you head to The Boat House in Port Charlotte before going anywhere else. We had the best experience ever with our sales associate, Bill Fischer. He made the whole process a pleasure, made sure we were prepared and properly equipped, and made sure we knew we could call him anytime if we ever had further questions. From the first steps onto their property to the exciting day of delivery 5 stars are not enough for this company and their team!

Jeff and his team took the time to take care of our specific needs for our boat. We were in a pinch and they got us up and running while communicating during the whole process. They gave us peace of mind and did a great job.

Located where KC's Riverstop used to be, this tiki bar and grill has expanded the space and changed the menu.

I went with a group of friends one evening just as the rain stopped.  There was a beautiful rainbow ...... and it looked like it ended right at the Boat House!  I would say it's true that there's treasure at the end of a rainbow, because we had such a good time.

The food was delicious, you can't beat the views, and the servers were friendly and accommodating.

All dining is outdoors with high tops, regular tables and bar seating.  Some of the seating is under the cover of 2 huge tiki huts and some of it is out in the open at tables that have umbrellas.

There are 2 bars, one at either end of the restaurant.  No matter where you sit though, you'll love the water views of the Caloosahatchee River.

the boathouse

You'll find appetizers, soups, salads, seafood baskets, sandwiches, burgers, and paninis.   Prices for entrees range from $8.95-$19.95.

I got the Mahi Mahi Tacos, served in a basket that I thought was just the right portion size.

Members of my group gave thumbs up to the Pulled Pork, Caribbean Chicken Salad, and Mahi Mahi Sandwich.

You can also catch your own fish from the nearby pier ........ and Boathouse will cook it for you!

They have a place to gas up your boat and to dock on the side of the restaurant if you're out fishing or boating.

The bar serves signature and classic cocktails; draft, canned, and seasonal craft beers; red and white wines.

Two of their desserts looked intriguing .......... Key Lime Pie on a Stick and Orange Blossom Pie.   I tried the Key Lime Pie and it was pretty amazing!

Go for breakfast, they are open daily from 8AM-10PM.   Plans are in the works to open a snack cart right on the beach.

Park for free at the beach or pay a little extra for valet parking close to the restaurant.  By the way, you'll love the sunsets!

Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill

Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill

RESTAURANTS March 6, 2023 admin

Catching a sunset at the Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill is a Cape Coral tradition for visitors and residents alike. It’s the only spot in the Cape offering an unobstructed waterfront view of Southwest Florida’s brilliant sunsets. “The jewel of Cape Coral” is how the casual, al fresco restaurant and bar is referred to by Zak Kearns, vice president of Kearns Restaurant Group.

The Kearns Restaurant Group and McGuigan Restaurant Concepts opened the Boathouse on property that is part of Yacht Club Community Park in May 2014. Located on the shores of the Caloosahatchee River, the restaurant is situated on the only beach in Cape Coral. You can get a cold drink and a hot sandwich while your toes are in the sand.

Originally, the restaurant concept was a waterside outpost for the restaurant group’s wildly popular Ford’s Garage. The burger-driven restaurant that originated on First Street in downtown Fort Myers has since expanded to some two dozen locations nationwide.

While burgers are always good at the beach, this restaurant has more of an island tiki vibe. So, the menu evolved, and the Boathouse found an identity all its own, featuring lots of seafood, such as a blackened filet of mahi-mahi in a pineapple rum glaze.

Fried seafood baskets are one of the top sellers. Guests can choose from lightly battered and fried scallops, shrimp, chicken tenders, mahi-mahi fingers and grouper, or try a combination.

Grouper Bites are a signature dish. Nuggets of the local fish are fried until golden and served with curly fries. They also come as an appetizer, perfect for sharing. Made in a similar preparation are Florida Gator Bites . The crisp yet tender morsels of meat come with a house-made Everglades dipping sauce. And the rumors are true; the taste is quite like chicken.

Burgers may not dominate, but they still have a prominent spot on the menu. The Famous Boathouse Burger is another staple. The half pound of Angus beef is simply grilled and served with fresh basics such as lettuce, tomato, onion and cheese. For an extra treat, add applewood smoked bacon. In addition to this classic, there is a South-Western Burger , served with BBQ sauce. And for those who like a little spice, the Jalapeño Bacon Cheeseburger is the ticket.

Of all the items on the menu, it’s the Key West-inspired Authentic Cuban Sandwich that continues to get the lion’s share of attention. People come searching for the savory sandwich after seeing it featured on the Travel Channel show Food Paradise. Besides being layered with ham and pulled pork, this gets an additional burst of flavor thanks to slices of pepperoni.

Following Hurricane Ian, the neighboring yacht club is still closed and undergoing a massive overhaul. The boat docks are also being repaired. At press time, the Boathouse was still completing hurricane repairs and renovations. However, Kearns was on target for opening at the beginning of March and says the space will be better than ever.

The restaurant’s famous tiki huts were destroyed by the storm. But their original builders, the Seminole Indians, came quickly to the rescue. They not only rebuilt them, Kearns says they were made “bigger, better, and stronger than ever.”

More rail seating has also been added, offering great views of the water and beach. Seating is first come, first served at the lively bar where headturning, 32-ounce bucket cocktails are mixed. You can get almost any of the signature cocktails bucket-sized, then keep the container as a souvenir. The Liki Tiki is an award-winning mix of lemon and pineapple flavored rums, blue curacao, pineapple juice, sweet and sour mix and Sprite. Warning, it goes down easy on a hot day.

Tropic Like It’s Hot is more than a clever play on words. It’s a refreshing favorite with lime rum, watermelon liqueur, simple syrup and soda. You can’t have an open-air tiki bar on the water without frozen libations, and the Boathouse does not disappoint. Think piña coladas, daiquiris and hurricanes, to name a few.

The Boathouse does such big business for lunch and dinner, many people forget, or perhaps don’t even know that it is also open for breakfast. A great place for boaters to grab a breakfast sandwich to-go, the menu is also full of morning classics, including omelets, biscuits smothered in southern gravy, breakfast burritos, bagels and more.

Texas French Toast is a favorite. Thick pieces of bread are egg-battered and cooked until crisp on the outside and soft in the middle. Topped with maple syrup, butter and powdered sugar, it’s sweet perfection. There is even an Early Riser Happy Hour with drink discounts on breakfast cocktails such as mimosas and bloody marys from 8 to 11 a.m.

Whether you are on a date or with your family, you are more than likely to find just what you’re looking for – from food to ambiance – at the Boathouse.

The Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill is located at 5819 Driftwood Parkway in Cape Coral. By boat, it’s at Marker 78, or where the Flamingo Canal empties into the Caloosahatchee River. The restaurant is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Breakfast is from 8 to 10 a.m., with Last Call from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Private parties can be accommodated. Call-ahead seating is available. For more information, call 239-945-2628 or visit TheBoathouseUSA. com. The Boathouse has a second location in east Fort Myers, located at 17101 FL-31.

Cape Coral Yacht Club damaged, and renovations are on hold

As Cape Coral picks up the pieces from Hurricane Ian , renovations planned for the Yacht Club Community Park will be put on hold.

If residents were to traverse the grounds, they'd find sand filling the parking lot and several damaged buildings.

The main building has broken windows and debris everywhere, while The Boathouse restaurant has collapsed in on itself.

The fishing pier has also been torn apart.

Mayor John Gunter said the Parks GO Bond renovations "are the least of our concerns."

Councilmember Tom Hayden agrees with the mayor's sentiment as they both said that the city will be working on restoring power, water, and sewage.

"I think the focus for a long time moving forward will be on recovery, so I'm not sure renovation plans will even be in the conversation for a little while on your way," Hayden said.

Like other city amenities, the yacht club is not going to be available to the public for the foreseeable future.

Hayden said the Army Corps of Engineers has bigger concerns in places like Sanibel Island and Pine Island.

"We have infrastructure issues that go way beyond the Yacht Club at this point," Hayden said.

When can we swim, picnic, play at Cape Coral's Yacht Club Beach?

Hurricane ian upended life on the gulf of mexico, shutting cape coral's yacht club beach. if council has its way, get out your sunblock and pack the beach bag..

the boathouse cape coral yacht club

Sunset celebrations, street vendors, and family picnics could return to the Cape Coral Yacht Club within a month's timeframe once city officials get through a final hurdle, although that hurdle is massive.

Cape Coral's Yacht Club Community Park and beach remain closed post-Hurricane Ian in 2022 as the city awaits U.S. Army Corp of Engineers permits before moving forward with renovations and reopening.

"Once we receive this permit, we will have a better idea of when the beach may reopen," City Spokesperson Kaitlyn Mullen said in an email this week.

The Army Corps did not respond to requests for comment. Performing unauthorized work or failure to comply with the terms of a valid permit can have serious consequences, meaning the city would in violation of federal law and face penalties, including fines and/or requirements to restore the area.

The Army Corps website does say, however, that less than 1% of all requests for permits are denied nationally.

Background on Yacht Club Community Park's closure

The Cape Coral Yacht Club Community Park, which boasts a beach, The Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill Restaurant, a historic ballroom building, and other park amenities, is the city's premier gemstone.

The city planned to close the area for two years for renovation that included replacing the seawalls and marina wet slips, replacing the harbormaster building and boat ramp, and building a three-story parking garage and beach restrooms. The beach would also be expanded, and utilities relocated.

Hurricane Ian, a Category 5 storm, devastated the area on Sept. 28, leading to the park's closure and stalling of contentious renovations.

What work is completed at the Yacht Club?

The park was closed and fenced off for months until July when the parking lot and driveway to the park opened to accommodate the reopening of the Boathouse restaurant.

In a late September update on the status of the Yacht Club, Cape Coral confirms that the existing bathrooms and two pavilions have been removed.

The Public Works and Parks Department has removed debris, combed through the remaining sand, and removed any remaining hazardous material from the water.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection also approved sand renourishment permits for the beach.

Bureaucratic approval delays progress

Landside permits are pending from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which the city described as critical for moving forward.

Once those permits are issued, the parks department will purchase and apply sand to the beach within one month of issuance.

At the same time, temporary restrooms will be delivered to the area.

The city has two contracts for portable restroom rentals, United Site Services and John To Go.

Lastly, the temporary perimeter fence at the beach will be removed once the beach can be open.

What's the status of the renovations?

Planned renovations were put on hold and the park and its facilities closed as the city and its residents went through hurricane recovery.

During the park's closure, the city decided to adjust plans and raze the Yacht Club's buildings as the city council opted for a "clean-slate approach" to the park, which drew ire from residents who wanted to see the site saved for historic purposes.

The city also plans to adjust the original renovation plans, which could include a new two-story ballroom, removing the tennis courts, and rearranging the area to accommodate a parking garage and restaurant.

Despite strong opposition, the city intends to move forward with a complete demolition by early 2024.

Cape Coral hosts open-house style events for updated Jaycee Park designs; critics continue

C ape Coral is hosting an open house-style design review on Tuesday for the planned improvements at Jaycee Park, even as some residents are working to halt the plans.

Because Jaycee Park has hit its 30% design benchmark, residents can see the designs, speak with experts, and provide feedback.

The event is in the city's Public Works Operation Center, 815 Nicholas Parkway E., from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Jaycee Park is an 11.8-acre park that opened more than 40 years ago and includes large open green spaces, a playground, a picnic area, restrooms, a walking path, and a gazebo.

The city held a similar event in September 2023, which was attended by many with the "Save Jaycee Park" movement, a group dedicated to preserving the character and feel of the neighborhood park.

For months, residents have been up in arms, showing up to the city council meetings and demanding that they halt any plans.

Clare Dooley, chairwoman of The Cape Coral Preservation PAC, said her organization continues to oppose the plans for the park.

"We are adamantly opposed to the city's design plans for the park that will destroy the beautiful natural green space that so many city residents enjoy," Dooley said.

The PAC was created to stop the overdevelopment and wasteful spending supported by the current mayor and city council by placing two referendums on the 2024 ballot, one to stop the development of Jaycee Park and to repeal the council's recently approved stipends.

"We are working hard to get the 22,000 signatures we need to get our initiative on the ballot, but we need help from everyone who loves the park the way it is," Dooley said.

Pennoni Associates, a consulting engineering firm, had been contracted for the preliminary and updated designs, which currently include two docks, both at the north and south ends, for 24 boat slips, a splash pad, two beach volleyball courts, a bistro/piazza area, areas for six food trucks, and a bandshell.

Updates to the designs include a revised parking lot concept with 128 spaces, ADA boardwalk accessibility, more shade trees, and shaded seating options.

Improvements to the park are estimated to cost $12 million for construction, and the city plans to issue a long-term debt to pay for the project, which means city residents and future residents will bear the cost.

Cape Coral plans to seek grant funding to offset some of the project's costs.
