The 2023 newcomers to our annual list hail from german yard lürssen, dutch builder oceanco and turkish refit yard karmarine..

Lürssen Yachts "Rising Sun" superyacht

As we round 2023, the size of the global superyacht fleet keeps on growing. The top 25 largest yachts in the world now total a combined 11,849 feet, with the smallest yacht on the list, Koru , measuring a whopping 417 feet. Built by shipyards all over the world—from the Netherlands to the United Arab Emirates, Italy, Turkey, Greece and the United Kingdom—new launches and refits are delivered each year. The latest newcomers to make the list hail from Lürssen, Oceanco and Karmarine. With many new gigayacht builds in the pipeline, the list promises to be even more competitive in the coming years. Here are the world’s top 25 yachts by size, from Koru to Azzam.

Azzam (592 feet, 6 inches), Lürssen

Lürssen Azzam

It’s not surprising that the world’s longest yacht hails from a shipyard with 13 out of the 25 top builds in the superyacht arena. Unfortunately, Lürssen could never really boast about Azzam after its launch in 2013 because of the owner’s penchant for privacy, though it did describe the interior by Christophe Leoni, which features a 95-foot-long main salon, as “inspired by the Empire style of the early 19th century.” The owner Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi directed a team of designers and engineers who started with the bare concept, worked through the technical challenges of what might be the most complex superyacht ever and finished with an unusually large vessel that can top the 30-knot mark. Nauta Yacht’s exterior features a long, sleek forward area, with well-proportioned tiers moving up to the skydeck. Lürssen describes the interior by Christophe Leoni as “sophisticated, with luxurious decor inspired by the Empire style of the early 19th century.” Its gas turbines, connected to water jets, push Azzam to more than 30 knots—as fast as a Navy frigate—giving it the ability to operate at high speed in shallow waters. It also boasts an impressive build time for a yacht of its size, with construction taking only three years after one year of engineering. Azzam  accommodates up to 36 guests, and a crew of 80.

Fulk Al Salamah (538 feet, 1 inch), Mariotti Yachts

"Fulk Al Salamah," Mariotti Yachts

Little information has been released about the world’s second-longest superyacht, custom-built Fulk Al Salamah , and it has been shrouded in mystery since first announced in 2014. Even the overall length of 538.1 feet has been estimated from AIS data. However, built and delivered by Italian builder Mariotti Yachts in their Genoa shipyard in 2016, the imposing vessel is believed to be owned by Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman. Last refit in 2021, exterior design is by Studio de Jorio, and it is considered by some to resemble more of a support vessel than a superyacht. Nonetheless, aerial photography shows an impressively large helideck, raked masts and a bathing platform.

Eclipse (533 feet, 1 inch), Blohm+Voss

Superyacht Eclipse

The 533.1-foot stately  Eclipse , the second yacht on this list owned by sanctioned billionaire Roman Abramovich, took five years to design and build. When it left the Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg in 2010, it was the world’s largest yacht. The interior has 17 staterooms and a palatial master suite, with the capacity to carry 85 crew. Both the interior and exterior are designed by Terence Disdale. A proportional profile is defined by tiered decks that sweep upward and bend ever so slightly at the aft ends. Eclipse  has a 185-foot-long owner’s deck, the capacity to hold three helicopters, a sophisticated stabilization system, six tenders and an enormous spa, gym and beach club, not to mention one of the largest swimming pools on any superyacht. Other features reflecting its stature: Hybrid diesel-electric engines are connected to Azipod drives that give Eclipse a top-end speed of 21 knots, with a range of 6,000 nautical miles.

Dubai (531 feet, 5 inches), Platinum Yachts

DUBAI UAE - DEC 16: Dubai - yacht of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum the ruler of the Emirate of Dubai. December 16 2014 in Dubai UAE

Even at 531.5-feet, Dubai ’s all-white Winch-designed exterior belies the dramatic and vibrant interior within. Colorful mosaic floors, a spiraling glass staircase, 70-foot-wide atrium and bursts of red, blue and green create a carnival of scene. Originally commissioned for Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei as a joint project between Blohm+Voss and Lürssen, the project was halted in 1998 with just a bare hull and skeletal superstructure. The hull was sold to the government of Dubai, and, under the direction of the country’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, work on the 531.5-footer began again, though this time by Platinum Yachts. Dubai delivered in 2006 and is now the sheikh’s royal yacht, with accommodations for 24 guests and quarters for 88 crew. The seven-decked yacht has a landing pad for a Black Hawk helicopter, submarine garage, disco and cinema, and can reach a top speed of 26 knots.

Blue (518 feet, 3 inches), Lürssen Yachts

Lürssen Superyacht Blue

Lürssen’s newest entry on the list, Blue , which delivered to its Middle Eastern owner in July 2022, may rank at number five out of the world’s largest yachts, but it’s diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system goes a long way to minimize emissions. The yacht also features an electric Azimuth pod drive that can be used independently or in conjunction with the twin propeller shafts. There is a waste-water treatment system and an advanced exhaust treatment system to help reduce NOx levels, as well as cut down on vibration and noise pollution. Interior and exterior design is by Terence Disdale, Blue is defined in profile by a raked bow with a helipad, an aft deck pool and twin balconies forward either side of the owner’s full-beam suite. There is a second, smaller helipad aft. The British designer has reportedly penned a feminine and elegant interior, though no images have yet been released.

Dilbar (511 feet, 8 inches), Lürssen

Espen Øino Dilbar yacht

The 2016 launch of Dilbar gave Lürssen the distinction of not only building the longest yacht ever ( Azzam ), but also the largest in terms of volume. Espen Øino designed the exterior, creating a full-bodied superstructure of long, flowing decks, along with two helicopter pads. Dilbar also has an 82-foot swimming pool that can hold an incredible 6,357-cubic-feet of water and according to Lürssen, is the world’s longest on a yacht. The interior by  Winch Design  is defined by its “rare and exclusive luxury materials,” says the builder, declining to go into detail. Despite  Dilbar ’s volume, the designers did a masterful job making the yacht look relatively svelte, In June 2020, Dilbar returned to Lürssen for a significant refit, where the yacht remains following US sanctions placed on the owner, Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, in 2022.

Al Saïd (508 feet, 5 inches), Lürssen

Al Said measures 508'5" and was built by Lurssen Yachts

Another 500-plus-foot yacht from Lürssen, the original Project Sunflower gained its official name of Al Saïd following its launch in 2016. Espen Øino’s exterior is akin to a classic cruise liner, complete with the twin-exhaust stacks in the center of the superstructure. Owned by the Sultan of Oman, the yacht was listed for the sale for the first time in April 2022 for an undisclosed sum. The six-decked  Al Saïd  can carry 154 crew and an estimated 70 guests across 26 suites. Lürssen reports a top speed of 22 knots. The London-based Redman Whiteley Dixon studio designed the interior, which includes a concert hall that can hold a 50-piece orchestra, a private cinema for 50 people, plus a medical room and dental care on board.

A+ (483 feet, 1 inch), Lürssen

Lürssen Topaz largest yachts in the world

Very little is known about A+ (formerly Topaz) , which was launched by Lürssen in 2012, other than it is the fourth-largest yacht ever built by the German shipyard. Tim Heywood Designs did the exterior, which features helipads on the foredeck and amidships on an upper deck. A lower aft deck includes a swimming pool. The German yard has not released any images of the Terence Disdale interior. Reported to be owned by Manchester City Football Club owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan—Emirati royalty and deputy prime minister of the UAE— A+ has a top speed of 22 knots and can carry 62 guests and up to 79 crew. It was last refit in 2022.

Prince Abdulaziz (482 feet, 3 inches), Helsingør Værft

Prince Abdulaziz

This custom yacht, launched by Helsingør Værft in Denmark in 1984, is reportedly undergoing a refit in 2023. The 5,200-tonne Prince Abdulaziz is one of the Saudi Royal family’s yachts, its first owner being King Fahd. Designed by Maierform, the yacht was the longest and tallest in the world at the time of its launch, a title the 482.3-foot  Prince Abdulaziz  held for 22 years until  Dubai  launched in 2006. The late David Nightingale Hicks, known for his use of bright colors, was the interior designer. The lobby is said to be a replica of the Titanic . The yacht is also rumored to be carrying surface-to-air missiles, though that may be an urban legend.

OK (479 feet), Oshima Shipbuilding

Ohima Shipbuilding's OK

Originally built by Japan’s Oshima Shipbuilding in 1982, the semisubmersible heavy lift ship was used for decades by DYT Yacht Transport as float-on yacht carrier. In 2022, the vessel underwent a private conversion at Karmarine shipyard in Turkey, turning it into a luxury, though highly unusual, yacht named OK . Modifications include a matte-black paint job, gold-tinted glazing and teak decking. The vessel’s 328-foot submersible aft deck—a feature that first attracted her new owner, who uses OK to transport their 150-foot ketch—is now covered in a carpet of artificial grass. A 40-tonne crane allows for the safe and easy launch and retrieval of a vast range of toys, including a seaplane. The interior by Bozca Design is reported to include accommodation for 20 guests, a botanical garden and a crazy Willy Wonka-inspired glass elevator that operates outside of the yacht’s superstructure.

El Mahrousa (478 feet, 1 inch), Samuda Brothers

"El Mahrousa" Yacht, Samuda Brothers

El Mahrousa , which means “The Protected” in Arabic, is currently Egypt’s presidential yacht, though the 478.1-footer has a separate history as that country’s royal yacht. The London-based Samuda Brothers began the build in 1863, and it was launched in 1865. The world’s oldest superyacht—and formerly the world’s biggest—was originally built for the Ottoman governor of Egypt, Khedive Ismail, and later carried three Egyptian kings into exile. The yacht was also at the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. It features external design by the British naval architect Sir Oliver Lang, and has had multiple modifications over the years, including a lengthening by 40 feet in 1872 and another 17 feet in 1905. During the second refit, the owners replaced its paddle-wheel engines with turbine-driven propellers. The yacht, in care of the Egyptian Navy, occasionally goes to sea for a day or two. In 2015, it was used to inaugurate the new Suez Canal.

A (468 feet, 5 inches), Nobiskrug

Nobiskrug sailing yacht A.

Undoubtedly one of the most visionary projects ever delivered by German shipyard Nobiskrug, the Philippe Starck-designed A is a wild fantasy of the future. Delivered in 2017, the futuristic look of  sailing yacht  A includes smooth, silver-metallic surfaces and windows that look nearly invisible, three composite masts that bend slightly, and a deck hidden by high bulwarks. The Philippe Starck-design is a wild fantasy yacht of the future. The 468-foot sailing yacht is a technical victory for Nobiskrug , which developed composite fashion plates to create the unusual shapes without compromising any strength or fluidity. It has the tallest freestanding composite masts on any sailing vessel, a diesel-electric propulsion system and state-of-the-art navigation systems. The boat also reportedly has an underwater viewing platform in the keel. Starck’s traditional interior features dark wood, copper accents and cozy patterned carpets. The split-deck main salon is divided into zoned seating areas with integrated bookshelves. She remains today the world’s largest sailing yacht six years after her launch, though many argue she is better defined as a sail-assisted yacht.

Nord (466 feet), Lürssen

Lürssen OPUS Launch

Nord (Project Opus) has been a long time coming. She was announced in 2015 but didn’t hit the water until November 2020 when she conducted sea trials in the Baltic Sea. The 466-foot yacht features interior design by Italian studio Nuvolari Lenard and is Lürssen’s first yacht launched from its newly upgraded floating shed at its facility in Vegasack. Boasting many top-tier amenities, the yacht includes a sports and diving center on the lower deck, multiple tenders ranging in size up to 50-feet and a large swimming pool. The two helipads support the yacht’s long-range cruising capabilities for autonomous exploration, and a retractable hangar means a helicopter can slide neatly into the superstructure for storage when not in use. A generous 20 staterooms accommodate 36 guests across six decks, while a sleek aft-sloping superstructure gives Nord an individual profile on the water.

Yas (462 feet, 6 inches), Abu Dhabi Mar

Superyacht Yas in Barcelona

As a converted yacht, Yas is one of the most interesting vessels on this list. The dolphin-like exterior was originally a former Dutch Navy frigate that launched in 1978 and eventually sold to the navy of the United Arab Emirates, where it was renamed Al Emirat . The yacht underwent its dramatic conversion in a facility in Abu Dhabi’s main port, emerging as a gleaming superyacht in 2011, with one of the most interesting profiles on the water. It was eventually delivered four years later. Reportedly owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed al Nahyan, half-brother of the president of the UAE, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the design by Paris-based Pierrejean Vision is defined by massive glass surfaces. Yas can accommodate 60 guests and 58 crew members. Mated to a steel hull, the superstructure is the largest composite edifice ever built.

Solaris (459 feet, 3 inches), Lloyd Werft

Russian oligarchs yachts continued to be seized

Owned by Russian businessman Roman Abramovich, the 476-foot  Solaris  was one of the largest yachts to deliver in 2021. Last refit in 2022 at MB92 in Barcelona, the vast, highly private explorer is built by German shipyard Lloyd Werft, and features a displacement steel hull with bulbous bow and steel superstructure with teak decks. The eight-deck exterior by Australian designer Marc Newson houses a large helipad, sundeck, spacious beach club aft and 21,527 sq. ft. of glass, the largest panes to ever be built into a yacht. Lloyd Werft also built the Russian billionaire’s previous explorer yacht Luna , which he reportedly sold for $360 million to his close friend Farkhad Akhmedov in 2014.

Ocean Victory (459 feet, 3 inches), Fincantieri

Fincantieri Yachts’ 459-foot Ocean Victory Photo by Trevor Coppock / TheYachtPhoto.com

The largest motoryacht ever built in Italy, Fincantieri’s Ocean Victory was delivered to its owner, Russian billionaire Viktor Rashnikov, in 2014. The seven-deck exterior by Espen Øino includes two helideck platforms and a hangar belowdecks, as well as exceptional outdoor social areas and a floodable tender dock. Ocean Victory has accommodations for 28 guests as well as quarters for 56 crew. Ocean Victory also has six pools, a 3,300-square-foot spa, and an underwater observation room. The interior by Alberto Pinto remains a secret, aside from the yacht’s six pools, a 3,300-square-foot spa and an underwater observation room.

Scheherazade (459 feet, 3 inches), Lürssen

Russian oligarchs yachts continued to be seized

The 459.3-foot, Lürssen-built Scheherazade (formerly known as Project Lightning) was delivered in June 2020. Two helipads, forward and aft, and a large beach club aft are visible from aerial photographs, but aside from the yacht’s reported seven-foot beam further details have not yet been released of the highly private vessel, including the names of designers or naval architects involved with the build. The reason may lie with the yacht’s unofficial owner, believed to be Russian president Vladimir Putin. In May 2022, Italian authorities froze Scheherazade in the port of Marina di Carrara following an investigation conducted by Italian financial police who found the ship’s beneficial owner had “significant economic and business ties” to high-ranking Russian government officials, though the results of the investigation to date remain inconclusive.

Al Salamah (456 feet), Lürssen

Lürssen Al Salamah gigayacht

When Lürssen launched Al Salamah in 1999, it was the third-largest yacht in the world. Its  number 18 ranking shows how much has changed in the last 20 years. Code-named MIPOS, or Mission Possible, the yacht was designed by Terence Disdale . Originally owned by Saudi Arabian Crown Prince, Sultan bin Abdulaziz, in 2013 the yacht was put up for sale for $280 million, before reportedly given to Bahraini Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa as a gift. The large imposing exterior is primarily protected space, with an upper deck exposed to the elements. Al Salamah has staterooms for 40 guests, including two owner suites, 11 VIP staterooms and eight twin cabins. The yacht can carry up to 96 crew and has a top speed of 22 knots. Al Salamah was last refitted in 2009.

Rising Sun (454 feet, 1 inch), Lürssen

Lürssen Rising Sun superyacht

Designed by the original guru of yacht designers, Jon Bannenberg, Rising Sun was built by Lürssen for Oracle CEO Larry Ellison and is currently owned by billionaire David Geffen, who reportedly paid $590 million for the yacht. The yacht comes with a gym, grand piano, multiple swimming pools, a beauty salon, and a spa with a sauna. Delivered in 2004, and last refit in 2011, the yacht’s exterior is defined by banks of windows across the superstructure. Rising Sun has 86,000 square feet of living space in 82 rooms. It can accommodate 18 guests in nine cabins, with the capacity to carry up to 46 crew. The interior by Seccombe Design includes a gym, cinema and wine cellar. The rear cockpit deck was designed as a basketball court. Geffen received global media backlash in 2020 for his “tone deaf” social-media posts that pictured himself on board his yacht during Covid-19 lockdown.

Flying Fox (446 feet, 2 inches), Lürssen

Lürssen's Flying Fox superyacht.

The 446.2-foot  Flying Fox is arguably the most high-profile yacht on this list, primarily for being the largest yacht available on the charter market, as well as being singled out as “blocked property” by US authorities in 2022 due to its reported ownership by sanctioned Russian oligarch Dmitry Kamenshchik. Delivered jointly by Imperial and Lürssen in 2019, 446.2-foot Flying Fox is the largest yacht available on the charter market. Key features of the Espen Øino-designed exterior are a curvaceous dove-gray hull and a 3.7-foot swimming pool that runs athwartship on the main aft deck, the largest ever found on board a yacht. A two-decked spa also gives guests access to a cryosauna, hammam and relaxation room with a fold-down balcony at sea level. Packed to the rafters with the latest amenities, the yacht holds a diving center, decompression chamber and two helipads. Flying Fox is PYC compliant and can accommodate 25 guests.

Savarona (446 feet, 2 inches), Blohm+Voss

Savarona superyacht 25 top yachgts

Launched in 1931, Savarona was built for American heiress Emily Roebling Cadwalader, and is easily identified by its two mustard-colored funnels. The yacht was eventually acquired by Turkey to be the presidential yacht of Kemal Atatürk, founder of modern Turkey. Jane’s Fighting Ships described the yacht in 1949 as “probably the most sumptuously fitted yacht afloat.”  Savarona was later converted to a training ship for the Turkish Navy and, in 1978, destroyed by fire. The yacht laid in tatters for 10 years. A Turkish businessman spent around $45 million refurbishing Savarona , commissioning Donald Starkey for the interior and replacing the original steam-turbine engines with modern Caterpillar diesels. Savarona became Turkey’s official presidential yacht again in 2014, accommodating up to 34 guests in 17 suits, and carrying up to 48 crew. Amenities include a swimming pool, Turkish bath, 280-foot grand staircase, a movie theater and a library dedicated to Atatürk.

Crescent (443 feet), Lürssen

Lürssen Crescent superyacht Larry Ellison

Last refit in 2021, Espen Øino’s dark hull and tiered superstructure was one of the most exciting launches of 2018. Called Project Thunder internally at Lürssen, the custom-built yacht features cutouts along the hull sides that allow full ocean views from the saloon on the primary deck, as part of Crescent ’s distinctive curved superstructure. Its most noteworthy feature is the jaw-dropping bank of three-deck-high windows in the center of the yacht. This architectural feature serves as the centerpiece of a very compelling design. The yacht has accommodations for 18 guests in nine staterooms. Little is known about the François Zuretti-designed interior, other than Lürssen describes it as being “traditionally styled.” If it lives up to Crescent ’s brash exterior, the complete yacht promises to be an entirely groundbreaking design. In March 2022, Crescent was detained by Spain as property of Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin, who is sanctioned in connection with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Serene (439 feet, 3 inches), Fincantieri

Fincantieri Serene superyacht

Serene  is the yacht that launched Fincantieri into the superyacht segment, and what a debut it was. The largest yacht ever launched in Italy when it was delivered in 2011 (surpassed three years later by Ocean Victory ), the Espen Øino seven-deck design features a long, sleek blue hull crowned by a white superstructure. Pascale Reymond of Reymond Langton Design created the 43,056-square-foot interior for the Russian owner, which includes a double height atrium with a piano lounge at the top and a vast open-plan main salon below. Sunken LEDs and bright pink and purple neon lights create a modern party vibe in the social areas, which contrast with the elaborate yet more traditional guest suites. A spiral staircase with intricate metal banisters soars through the heart of the yacht. The open stern area has a winter garden (enclosed glasshouse) that allows dining in all seasons. Serene also has two helipads and a hangar, a big swimming pool and a tender garage large enough for a submarine. Pascale Reymond of Reymond Langton Design created the 43,056-square-foot interior for the Russian owner, though its details have remained closely guarded.

Al Mirqab (436 feet, 4 inches), Kusch Yachts

Al Mirqab

Al Mirqab was a yacht before its time. Launched in 2008, the yacht’s diesel-electric propulsion involves an azimuth pod drive and gives the 436.4-footer a top end of 21 knots. With 36 staterooms, and crew quarters for 45, it was built for Qatar’s former prime minister under the supervision of Kusch Yachts in the Peters Werft shipyard in Wewelsfleth, Germany. The Tim Heywood exterior includes a long, navy-blue hull with a white superstructure. The yacht’s diesel-electric propulsion involves an azimuth pod drive and gives the 436.4-footer a top end of 21 knots. Its interior by Andrew Winch won several awards, with images showing Arabic-influenced motifs on the marble floors of large social areas. The yacht’s centerpiece is a stunning, complicated floating staircase encircled by custom-made glass panels. Al Mirqab has staterooms for 36, and crew quarters for 45.

Koru (417 Feet), Oceanco

Oceanco's Koru.

Only just making the cut on this list, Jeff Bezos’ new 417-foot sailing yacht, Koru , was the subject of worldwide controversy even before its 2023 delivery. Built by Dutch shipyard Oceanco and reportedly costing $450 million, the Amazon founder’s first vessel is the tallest sailing yacht in the world with masts that measure over 230 feet tall, the same height as the Great Pyramid of Giza. It’s so tall, in fact, that Bezos petitioned the Dutch city of Rotterdam to temporarily dismantle the Koningshaven Bridge, a 95-year-old landmark, to allow his yacht to pass under. His request was denied, and the yacht was instead partially towed through Rotterdam without its mast. The towering design also makes it unsafe to land a helicopter onboard, prompting Bezos to commission his second yacht, the 246-foot custom support yacht Wingman . Delivered in early 2023, and featuring a helipad, Wingman is Damen’s largest support vessel to date. No details have yet been released about Koru ’s interior or exterior design, including who penned the design.

biggest sailing yachts for sale in 2022

The biggest sailing yachts to join the market in 2022

The sailing yacht market experienced a small boost in 2022 with 52 sales secured - a 24 per cent increase on last year - and more than 120 new listings, according to BOATPro. We look back on the biggest sailing yachts to join the market in 2022...

Length : 56.4m Builder : Alloy Yachts

Salvaje was delivered in 2014 as Mondango 3 and was one of the largest to leave the sheds at New Zealand-based shipyard Alloy Yachts . Her profile and naval architecture are the work of Dubois Naval Architects and she joins the market with a new set of 3Di sails and an overhaul of the engines and rigging. Highlights include a lifting keel, a climate-controlled cockpit protected by sliding glass side screens and curved glass doors, as well as a spa pool on the aft deck.

Salvaje is asking €29,500,000 with Edmiston .

Length : 55m   Builder : FNM

Elena looks deceptively classic, but she was actually launched in 2009. She is a replica of a racing schooner of the same name that took part in the 1928 King’s Cup trans-atlantic race, sailing from New York to Santander in record time. She is based on original 1910 drawings by designer Nathanael G. Herreshoff and is a tribute to the golden age of yachting. Built with racing bones, her crew has collected plenty of silverware since her launch - Elena has won Antigua Classic Week, Les Voiles de St Tropez and Monaco Classic Week.

Elena is asking €12,000,000 with Y.CO .

Length : 49m Builder : Perini Navi

Silenco was launched in 2001 as the third unit in Perini Navi 's popular 50 metre series. Not only is she a comfortable cruiser with a Christian Liaigre interior, she is also racing royalty with class wins at the Perini Navi Cup and Loro Piana regattas. Two aluminium masts stand 52 metres and 35 metres tall with custom captive reel winches and electric furlers for the genoa and staysail. Silencio was extensively refitted in 2012 and again in 2021 where she completed her 20 years ABS survey and received a new suit of sails from Evolution including a mainsail, mizzen and genoa.

Silencio is asking €13,500,000 (VAT paid) with Edmiston .

Francesco Petrarca

Length : 49.4m   Builder : Benetti

Francesco Petrarca has quite the history. Built in wood by Benetti , she started life in 1941 as a commercial ship used to transport marble from Carrara in Tuscany to Alexandria in Egypt. Some twenty years later, she was found languishing in an Egyptian port by engineer Giorgio Varvaro who set about restoring her and converting her into a yacht. She was re-rigged as a three-masted staysail schooner and enjoyed twenty more years of cruising before she changed hands in 1999 and was refitted once more.

Francesco Petrarca is asking €1,900,000 with Edmiston .

Length : 47.4m     Builder : Mengi-Yay

Gweilo is a two-masted schooner built in cold-molded epoxied wood and offered for sale following an extensive refit in 2022. A traditional-style rig and a long keel is the work of Gerard Dykstra and creates a comfotable ride for guests. Her interior is finished in dark panelled woods and rich fabrics with accommodation for eight.

Gweilo is asking €5,800,000 with Fraser .

Length : 45.26m     Builder : Perini Navi

Blush has enjoyed an enviable charter record on both sides of the Atlantic and has been cruising since her launch in 2007. The popular Perini Navi is offered for sale following an extension refit period to the tune of €1.8 million including her fifteen-year class survey. For owners looking to host larger groups on board, her master suite can be divided into two to create a fifth cabin.

Blush is asking €12,495,000 with Camper & Nicholsons .

Length : 43.9m Builder : Alloy Yachts

Encore is an all-rounder. Since hitting the water at New Zealand shipyard Alloy Yachts in 2013, she has competed in many a regatta, where her carbon rig and Dubois pedigree come into their own. Equally, she is a proven world cruiser and can remain autonomous for up to six months thanks to considered freezer capacity, tankage and storage, paired with a range of 4,000 nautical miles. She is offered for sale by her original owners with low engine hours.

Encore is asking $19,995,000 with Camper & Nicholsons .

Zaca A Te Moana

Length : 43.8m Builder : De Amstel

Zaca A Te Moana is based on a classic 1920s schooner by the name of Zaca that was famously rescued and restored post-war by actor Errol Flynn. Owner Ed Kastelein , who has a passion for restoring classic yachts, decided to commission a lookalike that was launched in 1992 with design by Oliver Van Meer and named Zaca A Te Moana. She has proven her mettle crossing the Atlantic regularly and completing the trip in as little as 10 days thanks to her powerful fore-and-aft rig that allows her to achieve 12-16 knots under sail. She can sleep 12 guests and carries a crew of 10.

Zaca A Te Moana is asking €2,100,000 with IYC .

Insiders still have no idea what's going to happen to Russian oligarchs' seized superyachts

  • It's been two years since Russia invaded Ukraine, leading to sanctions against Russian oligarchs.
  • Many of their superyachts were seized or frozen , leading industry insiders to question their fate.
  • The yachts, some of which are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, remain in a state of limbo.

Insider Today

More than two years after Russia invaded Ukraine, the boating world still doesn't have many answers about what's going on with the very large, expensive elephants in the sea: oligarchs' superyachts .

The war prompted many governments to enact sanctions against Russia's richest , including seizing their superyachts worth hundreds of millions of dollars. But it's unclear whether they can be sold or who'd buy them, leaving ports peppered with massive boats stuck in a floating limbo.

"The Russian problem, it's becoming a bigger and bigger and bigger problem," one luxury yacht broker told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show last week. Like many others, he requested not to be named, given the sensitive nature of the matter at hand and the generally discreet nature of the industry.

Russia has been a massive player in the massive boat market for a long time. In August 2021 — about six months before Russia's Ukraine invasion — Russians owned the second-largest share of yachts over 40 meters in length, according to a report from the industry publication SuperYacht Times.

They were responsible for 16% of new build superyacht purchases in the decade preceding the report and are known for splashing out on extravagant interiors and unique features. (One builder BI spoke to recalled a mandate from an oligarch for a large safe in the owner's cabin in which he could keep his rifles. The builder later learned he'd use them to skeet shoot on deck.)

But those sales have now screeched to a halt as oligarchs get hit by international sanctions. At least a dozen superyachts — worth well over $1 billion combined — have been affected.

And no one is quite sure what will happen to them.

Russia's sanctioned superyachts are hard to buy and sell

The first problem is that many of the yachts are "frozen" — not seized. That means that although the Russian owners can't operate or collect them, they don't technically belong to an overseas government, so they can't be sold without special permission.

Earlier this month, federal prosecutors petitioned a judge asking for consent to sell the Amadea, the 106-meter superyacht that has been docked in San Diego and costs the US as much as $922,000 a month to maintain.

"I've had some inquiries, but all you can tell them is we don't know the outcome yet" of the case, another superyacht broker told BI at the yacht show.

Related stories

And despite the broker's claim of interest in yachts like Amadea , most ultrarich — or at least their brokers — don't want to go near the vessels with a ten-foot pole, even if the government does get legal permission to sell them.

"How does it look if you bought a Russian boat?" Julia Simpson, a broker at Thompson of Monaco, said. "Even if it's completely legal and normal, there are too many things on the line," she said, like how the original owner got their money and whether that could make the new buyer look bad.

There are also possible legal implications, as it's hard for the government to prove who actually owns the yachts.

"Oligarchs typically structure their ownership of these high-value assets through a web of offshore shell companies and trusts that is designed to conceal the true owner," Joshua Naftalis, a former federal prosecutor who now works for Pallas Partners, told BI.

And if the government does assume ownership, it's highly dependent on court orders. For example, a Russian whose yacht had been seized by the French government regained access to his boat after winning a legal battle in 2022.

"It's a very difficult process to buy them," Ralph Dazert, the head of intelligence at SuperYacht Times, told BI. "There is a high risk of the former (Russian) owner suing you to get the boat back."

He pointed to the Alfa Nero, the 82-meter yacht that Eric Schmidt planned to purchase for $67 million last year in an auction put on by Antigua and Barbuda. He backed out after various parties tried to block the sale, likely deeming it not worth the legal headache.

"When the reason for sanctioning goes away, which it may do," the Russian owners will try to get their boats back , Simpson said. After all, "the government's not going to pay them."'

That said, if sanctions are dropped, the yachts will be worth much less than when they were seized, as a boat not in use deteriorates much faster than one sailing the seas.

"Those yachts need to be used to be kept in shape, kept in condition," the second broker said. "Just having them sit at the dock with a temporary crew on board is not good for the boats."

And the sanctioned Russians who have managed to maintain control of their superyachts won't have an easy time offloading them in the future.

Americans who try to do business with sanctioned oligarchs would have a number of hoops to jump through — like finding a bank to process the purchase, which would be next to impossible. If somehow they did and the government caught wind, they'd face hefty penalties and the transaction would be void.

So Russia's richest have found themselves "stuck" sailing in a select few countries that will let them, like the Maldives, Montenegro, and Dubai.

Vision Expo East at Javits Center

Times may be tough — but the eyewear industry is looking forward.

At this year’s Vision Expo East, the last held at New York’s Javits Center before the event moves to Orlando, Fla., in 2025, showgoers talked sustainability, technology and customization. The more than 460 exhibitors, more than 2023, showcased brand launches and innovation against a backdrop of orders, education and speakers, and there was a visibly renewed focus on proprietary brands from the industry’s biggest eyewear conglomerates.

The executive noted that 2023 marked the launch of a customer experience transformation, “a journey to become even more customer centric, digitally integrated and data-driven, combining human factor and technology and enabling our teams to be faster, agile and take informed decisions,” he said. The implementation “represents a new approach to customer engagement which puts the customer at the center of the business model, based on listening to and anticipating their needs to build a simpler, longer lasting and more responsible way of doing business, across their entire lifecycle.” According to Rettore, Marcolin ended 2023 with net sales up 2 percent year-over-year to 558.3 million euros.

In the ramp-up to the show, the Italian company opened a new showroom in New York, part of an internalization strategy that also includes Milan, Paris and Shanghai, in order to “constantly elevate our corporate image, and let the customers immerse into the world of Marcolin — showcasing our innovative approach and craftsmanship to eyewear,” he said.

Recent global licensing agreements with MCM Eyewear and Christian Louboutin see Marcolin beefing up its brand portfolio. Christian Louboutin’s range will be a first for the French shoe brand, which Rettore classified as “a clear testament of our ability to launch new brands in our industry.”

Prominently featured at the company’s New York booth was also the recently acquired Ic! Berlin, which the executive sees leveraging the organization’s expertise in metalworking and “expanding our portfolio of luxury brands, a segment with high potential, while also strengthening our commercial position in key areas such as Asia, U.S. and Europe,” he said. The brand will continue to be made in Germany, which introduces Marcolin “to a new way of conceptualizing, designing and manufacturing eyewear,” he added.

This year is a milestone 90 years for Safilo, and there are plans to celebrate throughout the year, including at MIDO, and via various direct customer marketing touch points. “We are staying hyper-focused on the principle that is deeply rooted in our DNA of looking ahead to allow millions of people to see the world at its best while continuously innovating and focus on product excellence and outstanding customer service,” Verdun said.

The executive said Carrera is performing very well overall in the U.S. market, “fueled by strong momentum in the women’s segment due to the Carrera Woman collection,” it launched last spring, adding that he sees “a renewed strong interest across all regions, especially among Florida and New York customers.”

The East show saw Safilo dive deeper with the brand, debuting the Carrera Festival Edition Capsule Collection — well timed as Safilo is an official eyewear partnership of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival for the second year in a row. It includes eight sun styles in a mix of male, female and unisex shapes and materials; all lenses have an iridescent effect telegraphing a bubbly and magical festival mood.

On the licensed brands front, Kate Spade New York is “one of the key pillars of the region,” with Carolina Herrera, Tommy Hilfiger, Boss, Eyewear by David Beckham and Marc Jacobs “among our best-performing licensed brands,” Verdun said.

Safilo was an early adapter of melding technology with eyewear, partnering with Amazon for Carrera Smart Glasses with Alexa, while Verdun said it is still very early in the launch and product lifecycle to evaluate the full reach of the initiative, “especially for the wholesale distribution channel.” In the Amazon channel, “the product is performing quite well,“ he said.

Verdun said color is playing an important role for buyers, as are a variety of shapes and sizes. Requests for frames to accommodate larger women’s face shapes were a recurring theme at the show.

He noted smaller orders across the board at Vision Expo East “as customers seemed to be more cautious in their buying habits but we were able to convert accounts that were seriously interested in buying, selling the same amount of units as we did at the show in 2022.”

EssilorLuxottica is staking a claim on Gen Z with Ray-Ban Pulse, a youthful collection featuring geometric and wraparound shapes in bright hues. “These frames aim to break away from classic styles and embrace new standards by being unique and bold,” said Maria Colon, vice president of Ray-Ban North America. With an accessible price point starting at $143 and a frame made from bio-based materials, “the new product line is designed for the Gen Z audience, who have shared values, preferences and beliefs, positioning Ray-Ban as not only the leader in the latest eyewear trends but also a brand at the pulse of the cultural conversation,” she said.

Jimmy Choo eyewear is launching its first collection in partnership with EssilorLuxottica . Styles are made from recycled acetate with bio-nylon lenses and use “crystal, pearl and signature brand signifiers for an elevated, recognizable look,” said Alessandro Mariani, vice president of brand marketing, EssilorLuxottica professional solutions North America. Signifiers include diamond-shaped studs, “which are present for the first time in the eyewear category,” he said, with sharp custom temple tips that are a play on the heel of the brand’s shoes.

“A few years ago, we embarked on a journey to make EssilorLuxottica’s business model more circular, with the aim to shift from fossil-based materials to bio-based and/or recycled materials, and embed eco-design in all its developments by 2025,” said Elena Dimichino, chief corporate sustainability officer, EssilorLuxottica.

Following the adoption of a proprietary eco-design tool called SAM (sustainability assessment methodology) “in our lens division, the new Varilux XR series lens has reduced plastic consumption by 19 percent compared to previous Varilux X series lens, leading to an estimated decrease of 6 percent in CO2 emissions,” she added.

The global Eyes on Tomorrow program was once again front and center at Marchon’s booth, highlighting the organization’s goal to be 50 percent sustainable by 2025. “This year we have made the switch to sustainable demo lenses across all our production,” Thomas Burkhardt, president, Marchon Eyewear, said. Currently, the company’s portfolio of frames is more than 30 percent sustainably made and “more than 80 percent of our POP and packaging items are produced with recyclable materials,” he said. Burkhardt is confident the company will reach its goal through “our work with world-class partners like Eastman, leveraging more sustainable materials and packaging solutions, and innovating the way we manufacture and transport our products.”

He added that time is in the company’s favor, “every year, new more sustainable materials are coming to the marketplace and we’re excited to be at the forefront of exploring and implementing innovations in this field, with the end goal of having one of the most sustainable product platforms in the industry.”

The executive said that while the overall optical business in the U.S. has seen a decline over the past couple of years, Marchon’s business continues to grow. “Our U.S. business is strong and remains the most important market,” with Nike Vision, Ferragamo, Calvin Klein, Longchamp and Lacoste, as well as proprietary brands, including Dragon, “performing exceptionally well.”

On the back end, Marchon continues to accelerate its digitalization efforts, particularly in the areas of product design and development, merchandising, forecasting and marketing, he said. Teams are now working “very differently than just three, four years ago, with better systems and support and fewer administrative tasks, creating time and space for more creativity and focus on our customers’ needs,” Burkhardt said.

Akoni’s CEO Rosario Toscano said the VEE show was an “incredibly positive experience” for the brand. “The East show served as an opportunity to strengthen relationships with our retail partners and explore new avenues for collaboration. Overall, it was a rewarding experience that further solidified our position within the eyewear industry.”

The U.S. market is an important market for the premium eyewear manufacturer, as it’s the only region with a dedicated e-commerce presence, a strategic decision based on several factors, Toscano said. ”Firstly, the U.S. market historically represents the largest platform for eyewear online, making it a natural first move for our expansion. Additionally, Americans have a strong affinity for new brands and are early adopters, creating a perfect environment for Akoni Eyewear. Lastly, our primary business is predominantly driven by the United States in terms of retail and wholesale channels, making the online strategy aligned with our existing market presence,” Toscano said. The brand plans to gradually expand the channel into other markets.

He hinted at several initiatives launching soon with Akoni, Balmain and Valentino. “One initiative worth highlighting is our ongoing research and development efforts to integrate cutting-edge technologies into our products, such as advanced lens coatings and materials that enhance durability and performance,” he said.

Zanardo said a particular highlight was the return of Tag Heuer’s eyewear line and Bulgari’s first presentation in the region, “which received excellent feedback from our clients. We continue to grow as an organization and to pursue excellence in all our endeavors — our growth in the U.S. market and the recent integration of our proprietary brands Barton Perreira and Vuarnet are perfect examples of it. As part of LVMH Group, we remain dedicated to framing the future of luxury eyewear, upholding the highest standards for both product and distribution quality.”

Eyewear customization was focus point at this year’s show, a topic Silhouette is leading the conversation on. “Now more than ever, customers are looking for eyewear that highlights their unique preferences and style,” Hartmut Kraft, president, Silhouette Optical US, said, adding that Silhouette has long been at the forefront of customizable eyewear, “starting with the revolutionary Titan Minimal Art collection 25 years ago,” a collection that lets customers personalize their eyewear experience by mixing and matching an endless assortment of rimless shapes, sizes, temple colors and optional lens tints.

“This year, with our new 25 th anniversary Titan Minimal Art collection, customers have another customization option with the introduction of our hand-applied Color Groove add-on, giving a subtle, colorful contour to the lenses. We take pride in providing a truly unique customer experience, allowing wearers to create their own, tailor-made eyewear that redefines innovation and style.”

7 of the Largest Yachts For Sale at The 2022 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show

By Heather Collier

The 2022 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is set to take place later next week, with over 100,000 attendees, 1000 exhibiting brands and 1300 boats expected to be on display.

This year, the iconic Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show returns for its 63rd edition. From the 26th to the 30th October, the largest in-water boat show will return to its well-known location at Seabreeze Boulevard.

After last year’s record-breaking success, with over $1.79 billion dollars contributed to Florida's economy, this year’s event is expected to be just as impressive: securing its title as the largest boat show in the world.

Here are some of the largest yachts for sale at the show this year:

The 48.1 metre Feadship yacht Gitana   has returned to the market following a six-month refit, jointly listed for sale with Hank Halsted at Northrop & Johnson and Alex Busher at Edmiston.

Launched in 1997 by Feadship, Gitana features a steel hull and aluminium superstructure designed by Guido De Groot with naval architecture by Frits De Voogt.

This stunning vessel joins the market following a multi-million-euro refit at her home shipyard, which included her 25-year Lloyds Class survey, a new paint job, new anti-fouling paint for her hull and a complete overhaul of running gear.

Gitana can host up to 12 guests and 10 crew members. There are five cabins in total, including a full-beam master suite on the main deck and four additional guest cabins on the lower deck, comprised of two queen cabins and two twins, each with a Pullman bunk.

The master suite is outfitted with a king-sized bed, a study area and an en-suite bathroom with a steam shower and Jacuzzi that sits beneath a skylight.

New to the global yacht sales market is the distinct 52m  Feadship , Amanti. Built in 2003 and maintained over several refit periods, the most recent of which has been completed in 2022 - this vessel is a desirable, luxury superyacht boasting exceptionally high volume.

Accommodating 13 guests across 7 staterooms with an elevator servicing all decks, her significant interior volume is due to a versatile and multifunctional layout on all five decks.

An overall beam of 10.36 metres and the full-beam bridge deck design amplify the expansive livable area. The skylounge also takes advantage of the full beam and is joined by its own aft deck. Inside is an incredible lounge area complimented by a full bar.

Pure Bliss is a custom motor yacht launched in 2006 by Burger Boat Company and most recently refitted in 2020.

Pure Bliss measures 43.89 metres in length, with a max draft of 2.32 metres and a beam of 8.53 metres. She has a gross tonnage of 499 tonnes and an aluminium hull with an aluminium superstructure.

Her exterior design is by Don O'Keeffe, whilst her interior design was penned by Burger Boat Company, along with her naval architecture.

She boasts a top speed of 18.50 knots and a cruising speed of 16.00 knots, is powered by a twin screw propulsion system, and has a range of 3,800 nautical miles.

Pure Bliss can host up to 12 guests across the span of 7 cabins. She also houses room for up to 10 crew members, and is fitted with a jacuzzi on deck.

Atomic is a 64m superyacht built in 2021 by VSY in Italy. Featuring an exterior design by Espen Oeino and an interior by Franck Darnet Design, Atomic is a remarkable feat of design, performance and liveability.

This winning combination culminates in a vessel situated at the top of its class when it comes to comfort, luxury and artistic creation. MY ATOMIC accommodates up to 12 guests across 6 staterooms, with 18 crew onboard, thus guaranteeing a 1:1 crew ratio and an unforgettable charter experience.

She also boasts cutting-edge technical and engineering solutions such as a Dynamic Positioning system and diesel electric thrusters, that further augment the perfect balance between design and governability.

Some of her highlights include an infinity pool on the sundeck aft and a fire pit, that will surely create a cosy atmosphere when overlooking some of the world’s most spectacular destinations.

Atomic has a cruising speed of 12 knots and a top speed of 17 knots.

Moca is a 63.5 metre Motor Yacht, built in Italy by  Benetti. Delivered by the Italian yard in 2016, the yacht underwent a major refit in 2021.

She boasts a top speed of 15.5 knots, with a cruising speed of 15.0 knots. She has a maximum cruising range of 4750.0 nm at 12.0 knots, with power coming from two MTU diesel engines.

Moca can accommodate up to 14 guests in 7 staterooms, with 15 crew members. She has a gross tonnage of 1081.0 GT and a 10.8 metre beam.

DB9 is a semi-custom motor yacht launched in 2010 by Palmer Johnson Yachts and most recently refitted in 2020.

Palmer Johnson has emerged from modest beginnings in 1918 as a builder of wooden fishing boats to become a world leader in the construction of luxury high-performance superyachts.

She measures 52.40 metres in length, with a beam of 8.70 feet, a gross tonnage of 495 tonnes, and is comprised of an aluminium hull with an aluminium superstructure.

" It is not necessary to live, it is necessary to sail ", this is the firm belief of Italian design company Nuvolari & Lenard, her exterior and interior designers. The PJ 170 Sports Yacht semi-custom series presents a line of 52.2 metre motor yachts that demand attention with their combination of strong, substantial lines and sleek sophistication.

GENEVA (AP) — Two managers of a Saudi oil exploration company went on trial in Switzerland on Tuesday for alleged fraud and money laundering over a scandal years ago linked to a Malaysian sovereign wealth fund that the U.S. Justice Department once described as the “biggest kleptocracy case” ever.

The defendants from PetroSaudi — a Swiss Saudi citizen and a Swiss British national who were not identified by name for privacy reasons — are accused of having created a scheme in 2009 under which 1 Malaysia Development Berhad, or 1MDB, would set up a joint venture based on false premises.

Malaysian investigators allege that over $4.5 billion was stolen from the fund, established in 2009, and laundered by associates of former Prime Minister Najib Razak through layers of bank accounts in the United States and other countries.

Swiss prosecutors said the PetroSaudi managers were indicted on charges of commercial fraud, aggravated criminal mismanagement and aggravated money laundering, based on events that took place over at least six years.

The attorney general’s office, in a filing last year , said the managers sought to enrich themselves and others by misappropriating at least $1.8 billion that was transferred to the state-owned investment fund.

British cellphone company Vodafone confirmed Friday, March 15, 2024, that it is selling its Italian business to Switzerland’s Swisscom for 8 billion euros ($8.7 billion) and will hand back half of the proceeds to its shareholders through the buyback of company shares. (AP Photo/Michael Sohn, File)

The indictments are the first of their kind in Switzerland, where some financial institutions were ensnared in the far-reaching scandal.

The joint-venture deal called for 1MDB to pour in $1 billion and for PetroSaudi to contribute assets consisting of oil fields in Turkmenistan and Argentina valued at $2.7 billion, even though the oil company didn’t actually own those assets, according to the criminal court in the southern city of Bellinzona.

After the deal was signed, about $700 million from 1MDB was transferred to a Swiss bank account linked to a Malaysian investor for whom the defendants had allegedly been working, and tens of millions ended up in the hands of the defendants and PetroSaudi, without serving the joint venture, it said.

Swiss prosecutors say the defendants also hatched other plots that aimed to cause the 1MDB board to transfer $830 million as part of an “lslamic loan” that followed the joint venture over the next two years. Those funds were also diverted, the court said.

Some of the looted money allegedly paid for jewelry, hotels, art and a luxury yacht, and helped finance Hollywood films such as “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

More than $700 million landed in Najib’s bank accounts. He was sent to prison in Malaysia in August 2022 to serve a 12-year sentence for graft . 1MDB was a development fund that he set up shortly after taking power in 2009.

The Swiss attorney general’s office noted last year that “the U.S. Department of Justice described the affair as ‘the largest kleptocracy case to date.’”

The three-judge panel in Bellinzona, which is home to the Swiss federal criminal court, is to hear arguments in the case through the end of April.
