8 Fun Activities at Yalong Bay Undersea World in Sanya

Yalong Bay in Sanya is not only the most attractive bay and beach in the area, it is also home to the world's largest and most complete group of soft and hard corals – hence serving as home to thousands of tropical marine life. These and more are what the Yalong Bay Undersea World has to offer for visitors.

Yalong Bay Undersea World focuses mainly on sightseeing and exploring the undersea world, but also functions as a marine life aquarium with various facilities for entertainment. In the 9 square kilometers of sea, visitors are able to enjoy all that the underwater world has to offer, including underwater activities such as sightseeing in the semi submersible vessel, walking under the sea, scuba diving and snorkeling. A whole array of  above water activities are also on offer here including aided parachuting, riding out to sea on a yacht or motorboat, swimming and sun tanning at the man-made beach, and resting at the resort hotel. In the following paragraphs, we will be introducing some of the more unique aquatic pastimes for your next trip to Yalong Bay, Sanya.

1) Underwater Sightseeing Ride the semi-submersible vessel imported from Australia and reserve yourself a front row seat watching the underwater world unfold outside. The semi-submersible vessel can take you as deep down as 1.7 m. Visitors can watch the corals and tropical fishes darting here and there just right outside the steel-framed glass windows. The entire sightseeing trip takes about 1 hour.

Tickets: 260 RMB/person

2) Strolling Underwater Visitors will wear pressure resistant helmets attached to individual oxygen supplies and will follow the trainer down a stairway 4 -5 m underwater; they can then enjoy the coral reefs at a close range view and feel the magic that pulsates through the colorful marine life that surrounds.  The entire trip takes around 20 -30 minutes.

Tickets: 380 RMB/person

3) Snorkeling Each visitor will be supplied with diving goggles, a breather tube (snorkel), flippers and a life jacket. A professional trainer will first explain some basic knowledge about snorkeling and things to look out for, then the trainer is going to accompany visitors 1 -3 m under water for some good old snorkeling fun.

Tickets: 200 RMB/person

4) Scuba Diving

Visitors will need to wear scuba diving suits and carry necessary diving equipment. The trainer will teach visitors some basic knowledge and diving techniques for 30 minutes; then visitors will carry their oxygen tanks and dive 4 -15 m underwater with the trainer.

Tickets: 480 RMB/person every hour

5) Fishing Visitors are able to choose between fishing from the boat or fishing at the wharf.  If opting to fish from the boat, staff at the venue will provide fishing rods and baits; visitors must wear life jackets and ride with trainers in yachts out to sea; those that like to fish from the wharf can ride the yacht back to the wharf and do so from there.

6) Riding the Yachts Yachts are much faster than regular motorboats, so each yacht is manned by professional drivers.  Visitors can sit on the deck or in the cabin and watch the tropical scenery of the ocean and coral reefs beneath the water surface.

Tickets: 80 RMB/person every hour

7) Riding the Motorboats Motorboats are slower and easier to drive; you usually only need to control the boat’s speed by manipulating pressure on the acceleration pedal. Visitors can opt to drive these themselves or they can also have a staff member from the resort man the boats for them while they sit back and enjoy the scenery.

Tickets: 180 RMB/person every hour

8) Aided Parachuting over the Waters This is an aquatic activity that is a bit more adrenaline-driven. Visitors will wear parachutes with help from the staff members at the resort. The parachutes are tied to the fast-sailing yachts by a rope. When the yachts start up, visitors can run on the deck to get up to speed; and with the buoyancy offered by the wind resistance – one can fly as high up as 20 m off the ground. The yacht will then travel around the designated route for a full circle and slow down speed to allow visitors to gradually descend on the shore.

Hainan Island>

Hainan Island, dubbed the “Hawaii of China” and host to world-class marinas, is the nation’s southernmost point. Located in the south China Sea, from Sanya Bay it is approximately 358nm southwest of Hong Kong and 150nm northeast of Danang. Hainan Island and the surrounding islands, coral islands, sandbanks and reefs make for attractive cruising. Hainan Island is a great jumping off point to visit the Paracel ‘Xisha’ Islands, a collection of reefs and atolls known for clean waters and marine life. Beware, though, that these islands are currently off-limits to foreign boats!

Known for its tropical and monsoonal climate, beach resorts, forested, mountainous interior and hilly hiking trails, Hainan Island has great beaches (Sanya Bay, Yalong Bay, Haitang Bay, Shimao Bay and Bo’ao). Sanya Bay was twice the only Asian stopover in the Volvo Round-the-World Yacht Race.

Rainfall is heavy during the monsoon season. Tropical storms and typhoons occur regularly in late summer and early fall. Forecasting is easily accessible and accurate. Stay up-to-date with weather warnings at www.cma.gov.cn . At the time of writing, we were unble to confirm the existence of official typhoon shelters. However, it is known that local fishing boats shelter in the harbour in Haikou, Hainan Province./

Formalities for clearing into selected marinas

Foreign yachts visiting Hainan Island must deposit 40% of the yacht’s value. The Government of Hainan is deepening support for welcoming foreign yachts and is considering offering free guarantees to international visiting yachts at selected marinas, but at time of writing, the new laws had not been released. The Marina at Clearwater Bay can provide the guarantee for visiting superyachts through the Agile Group. Yachts that do not pay the guarantee can still make clearance but are not allowed to sail around Chinese waters.

Foreign yachts are allowed to berth at a limited number of marinas but must apply permission to berth in advance through Penavico ( www.penavico.com.cn ), the only authorised State Agency. Marinas will assist to forward the required documents as listed in the introduction of this chapter in advance (at least 3 working days are recommended). In addition, with the support of the provincial government, the time required to complete the immigration procedures has been significantly reduced. Authorised foreign yachts may remain in the area up to 183 days per year.

Hainan Island as international yacht hub IThe yacht industry island-wide represents over 40 yacht clubs and more than 500 related enterprises. The main marinas currently in operation consist of four marinas in Haikou and five in the southern Sanya area, comprising over 2,000 berths. In addition, there are a few small marinas in Lingshui and Ledong areas. The Government of Hainan Province has made tourism development a key component of its economic strategy. There are plans to build 13 additional yacht ports, as well as eight ‘yacht towns’ by the end of 2025.

SOUTH HAINAN

Sanya serenity marina.

SANYA SERENITY MARINA. 18°12.923N, 109°28.678E

Designed by Camper & Nicholsons and situated on the southernmost Banshan peninsula of Sanya City, it’s well-protected from the dominant eastern winds. 325 full-service berths from 10-40 metres, depth from 5-8 metres, and 60 berths for visiting yachts.

The marina is protected by a 1,120-metre breakwater and has concrete main pontoons and aluminum fingers. Facilities include fuel station and pump-out systems for sewage and engine oils. There is 20,000 sqm of hardstand 3,500 sqm dry storage and repair yard, with a 100-ton tavelift with 11m wide limit.

There’s a private yacht club, cafés, restaurants, hotels, meeting and conference facilities, a shopping street, swimming pools, a sailing academy and a control tower that houses the marina services. This was the first marina in Asia-Pacific to be awarded ‘5 Gold Anchors’ Platinum accreditation by Marina Industries Association (MIA).

Serenity Marina has hosted two Volvo Ocean Races, the Youth World Sailing Championships and the Round Hainan Race. It’s also host to the Hong Kong-Hainan Race and is the current stopover for the Clipper Around the World Race.

VISUN ROYAL YACHT CLUB

Visun royal yacht club. 18°2.805n, 109°36.802e.

Established in 2005 and located on the southern tip of the Sanya Peninsula, where two rivers meet, it’s well protected in all seasons.

It has 376 fully serviced pontoon berths for yachts up to 60 metres. Each pontoon has international standard water and electricity, including two for mega yachts up to 40-50 metres. The marina provides overnight stay and international standard comprehensive repair and maintenance services.

The clubhouse has restaurants, bar, banquet facilities, health club and spa. It’s one of the few members of “La Belle Classe Destinations” in China and recognised as one of the premier private clubs in South China.

YALONG BAY YACHT CLUB

YALONG BAY YACHT CLUB. 18°12.805N, 109°36.802E

At the time of writing, this 5-star marina, in Yalong Bay National Resort District, at the southern tip of Hainan Island, claimed to be closed for maintenance.

According to a 2018 South China Morning Post news story, “The yacht club… has been ordered to close over accusations that its activities encroached on a nearby nature reserve. Under the order, the club must halt its operations and ensure all yachts leave waters within the Sanya National Coral Reef Nature Reserve, news website Hainan.net reported.”

In the meantime, the yacht club’s adjacent resort, the St. Regis Sanya Yalong Bay Resort, advises guests that they can enjoy the opportunity to charter fully-staffed Yacht Club vessels for private parties, sunset cruises, fishing excursions, corporate events and overnight cruises.

AGILE CLEAR WATER BAY MARINA

Agile clear water bay marina 18°23.909n, 109°52.441e.

This marina opened in 2014 and is one of the largest in Asia with 780 berths with service facilities. Refueling is done by truck. It can accommodate yachts up to 61 metres and has been accredited with a five Gold Anchors rating by TYHA.

The Agile Group offers free guarantees to international visiting yachts and facilitates a smooth port of entry. Documents are required 48 hours prior to arrival. Upon arrival, the staff will assist with the customs paperwork. The yacht club provides catering, entertainment, boat parking and driving training. The maintenance service area is equipped for engine overhaul.

SHIMEI BAY MARINA

Shimei bay marina. 18°38.96n, 110°14.854e.

Completed in 2013, this marina has 208 berths for yachts up to 50 metres and is protected by a breakwater, claimed to be able to protect yachts against typhoon conditions and waves up to 7 metres.

NORTH HAINAN

Xinbu island int’l yacht club, xinbu island international yacht club. 20°4.410n, 110°21.030e.

This Haikou City marina has 140 berths for yachts up to 24 metres in depth up to 5 metres. There’s a yacht maintenance dock and dry storage, complemented by a clubhouse and international hotel with restaurants, bars, MICE facilities, spa and leisure amenities.

HAIKOU HUACAI JIEPENG YACHT CLUB

Haikou huacai jiepeng yacht club. 20°2.038n, 110°17.775e.

This marina is located near the famous Huacai Huayi Hotel in Haikou, adjacent to Haikou Century Bridge. It enjoys a unique bay landscape and provides 68 exclusive yacht berths. The club and facilities are open only to members.

HAIKOU PUBLIC MARINA

Haikou public marina. 20°1.656n, 110°16.207e.

This marina newly opened in 2019 and is right next to the commercial harbour and 100m north of Binhai Avenue, Xiuying District, Hakou City. It has 610 berths with plans for an additional 800. It’s operated by a government-sponsored body, designated to serve as the training centre for the national sailing teams.

It remained tricky and demanding to fly even after the extensive improvements made over the MiG-1. Many fighter regiments had not kept pace in training pilots to handle the MiG and the rapid pace of deliveries resulted in many units having more MiGs than trained pilots during the German invasion. By 1 June 1941, 1,029 MIG-3s were on strength, but there were only 494 trained pilots. In contrast to the untrained pilots of the 31st Fighter Regiment, those of the 4th Fighter Regiment were able to claim three German high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft shot down before war broke out in June 1941. However high-altitude combat of this sort was to prove to be uncommon on the Eastern Front where most air-to-air engagements were at altitudes well below 5,000 metres (16,000 ft). At these altitudes the MiG-3 was outclassed by the Bf 109 in all respects, and even by other new Soviet fighters such as the Yakovlev Yak-1. Furthermore, the shortage of ground-attack aircraft in 1941 forced it into that role as well, for which it was totally unsuited. Pilot Alexander E. Shvarev recalled: "The Mig was perfect at altitudes of 4,000 m and above. But at lower altitudes it was, as they say, 'a cow'. That was the first weakness. The second was its armament: weapons failure dogged this aircraft. The third weakness was its gunsights, which were inaccurate: that's why we closed in as much as we could and fired point blank." On 22 June 1941, most MiG-3s and MiG-1s were in the border military districts of the Soviet Union. The Leningrad Military District had 164, 135 were in the Baltic Military District, 233 in the Western Special Military District, 190 in the Kiev Military District and 195 in the Odessa Military District for a total of 917 on hand, of which only 81 were non-operational. An additional 64 MiGs were assigned to Naval Aviation, 38 in the Air Force of the Baltic Fleet and 26 in the Air Force of the Black Sea Fleet. The 4th and 55th Fighter Regiments had most of the MiG-3s assigned to the Odessa Military District and their experiences on the first day of the war may be taken as typical. The 4th, an experienced unit, shot down a Romanian Bristol Blenheim reconnaissance bomber, confirmed by postwar research, and lost one aircraft which crashed into an obstacle on takeoff. The 55th was much less experienced with the MiG-3 and claimed three aircraft shot down, although recent research confirms only one German Henschel Hs 126 was 40% damaged, and suffered three pilots killed and nine aircraft lost. The most unusual case was the pair of MiG-3s dispatched from the 55th on a reconnaissance mission to PloieÅŸti that failed to properly calculate their fuel consumption and both were forced to land when they ran out of fuel. Most of the MiG-3s assigned to the interior military districts were transferred to the PVO where their lack of performance at low altitudes was not so important. On 10 July 299 were assigned to the PVO, the bulk of them belonging to the 6th PVO Corps at Moscow, while only 293 remained with the VVS, and 60 with the Naval Air Forces, a total of only 652 despite deliveries of several hundred aircraft. By 1 October, on the eve of the German offensive towards Moscow codenamed Operation Typhoon, only 257 were assigned to VVS units, 209 to the PVO, and 46 to the Navy, a total of only 512, a decrease of 140 fighters since 10 July, despite deliveries of over a thousand aircraft in the intervening period. By 5 December, the start of the Soviet counter-offensive that drove the Germans back from the gates of Moscow, the Navy had 33 MiGs on hand, the VVS 210, and the PVO 309. This was a total of 552, an increase of only 40 aircraft from 1 October. Over the winter of 1941-42 the Soviets transferred all of the remaining MiG-3s to the Navy and PVO so that on 1 May 1942 none were left on strength with the VVS. By 1 May 1942, Naval Aviation had 37 MiGs on strength, while the PVO had 323 on hand on 10 May. By 1 June 1944, the Navy had transferred all its aircraft to the PVO, which reported only 17 on its own strength, and all of those were gone by 1 January 1945. Undoubtedly more remained in training units and the like, but none were assigned to combat units by then.

We celebrated my husband's birthday here - had a full floor to ourselves, perfect for a party of 30 plus people. If you want to fit a bigger number, they offer the entire place, including cinema for hire - grand idea, but a bit more... expensive. The staff and administration are extremely friendly and accommodating. The place itself is nice, but basic. I would especially wish for a more elegant glassware, not just basic table wine glasses. Good choice of food for your party, be it a buffet or a banquet. Nothing extraordinary, but reasonably imaginative and tasty. They allow you to bring the alcohol of your choice and pay a cork tax, which is very affordable. All in all, the place has a nice feel and I would recommend it to a friend. More
