Mistral 16 is a 16 ′ 0 ″ / 4.9 m monohull sailboat built by Canadian Yacht Builders (CAN) starting in 1980.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Open dinghy and cuddy/cabin versions. The hull design is thought to be based on the WAYFARER Dinghy (Ian Proctor - 1959). Thought to be the same or similar to CL 16, also built in Canada.

Newport 16 or Renken 18

I'm looking for my first sailboat for my family and I. I have never sailed and have a family of four. I have these two boats that I have narrowed my selection to. I want a boat that is roomy enough for my family, easy to trailer, and yet still have fun on. Anyone have any suggestions or information on either one of these boats?

neptune 16 I had a Neptune 16 for my first sailboat(neptune 16 and newport 16 same boat I believe), Luved the boat, sailed well, and was forgiving of my mistakes for a small sailboat. Not a lot of cabin room but overnited in it a couple of times with wife and kids (wife wasn't happy but kids luved it) Have no knowledge of your other choice. But I know the neptune was very well built...best of luck and happy sails

Renken I was looking for an open 16 footer to introduce my daughters to sailing when I ran across a Renken 18 for sale - it had been donated to a church. It taught me a lot in the 6 years I owned it, and though it was a long way from a state-of-the-art design, it suited my needs at the time. A very safe and stable sailer, its rig is simple and easy to set up - which also means that it doesn't have the tweaks that a more performance oriented boat would have. It was originally built as a "Tangerine 18" in the late 70s, then Renken bought the mold(s) and made them in '83, only to stop production because they cost too much to build. I did about 400 sails on mine and sold it for almost what I had in it, after pushing it as far as I could (rigged it for spinnaker, etc.) Because it has a stub keel it will make a goodly amount of leeway upwind, and thus is not much good for racing, but if you don't mind that drawback it is a fine boat, well built and simple. I would be happy to comment further backchannel. Check out geocities.com/renkensailboats/ for more info.

Newport 16 The Newport has a very large cockpit, easy and fast to rig, very easy and stable to sail. Cabin is too small for family overnight, but great boat for daysailing with lots of storage room in the cabin.

Mistral 12 Sailing at Somers Point, NJ (YouTube video) I bought this 12-foot Dinghy on Craigslist. The seller said that the boat would be sold to the highest bidder by Tuesday.  It was Saturday and we were leaving for a week's vacation, so I asked my brother to offer $400. The boat was like new, on a galvanized trailer and had a small electric trolling motor and other extras, so I really didn't expect to get it. The photos say the rest.

The boat was manufactured in 1982 by canadian yacht builders, quebec. you would never guess by this wierd hin, i fell in love with the mistral 12 and decided to keep it for myself, but only sailed it four times in as many years i recently celebrated my 82th birthday and it's time to let someone else enjoy the boat., selling boat and trailer for $1,799, i entered the mistral and our two roadmaster "woodies" in two parades and harvested lots of applause, the swiss company, mistral, is well-known in europe. in the eighties, mistral was #1 in windsurfer competition. the canadian branch of mistral built a number of high quality sailboat models. mistral still has subsidiaries around the world that make windsurfers, paddleboards, sportswear, bags & attachments, sunglasses and even cosmetics below are pictures of other mistral sailboats., mistral 16 the mistral 16 was most popular (next four photos) some of the 16' mistrals were fitted with a small cabin download a pdf of the mistral 16 manual (2.7 mb), mistral 4.04 (13' 3"), download a pdf of the mistral 4.04 manual (1.7 mb), below: mistral windsurfer, mistral 4.07 (13' 4") in the center and a mistral 4.04 (13' 3") mistral 4.07  .

mistral 16 sailboat review

It sounds like foam floatation, both of my boats have it, but I didn't think Mistral 16s did, so it might not be. I might try a drop of epoxy in each of the old holes to seal them up, drill new holes and through bolt to a backing plate. Btw, is yours the week ender model or the open model?

I missed the Mistral 16, 'hidden' in the subject line. I am going to agree with Arcb. Fewer boats this size are cored. It also likely installed wrong, that is why it has been installed at least twice now. If it is flotation foam the screws were mounted to, no wonder it keeps getting pulled out. You should back up and reinforce this area with either a sheet of fiberglass or at least marine grade plywood. Epoxy the wood or fiberglass underneath the holes, patch the holes then through bolt the hardware back in place with washers.

You didn't say if you can get at the backside. Old core can be remove with an Allen key in a drill. Vacuum the crud. dry, ,inject with glass fibered epoxy. Drill thru to a backing plate or at the very least fender washers and machine bolt

Product Description

This sailboat mast up cover will completely enclose your Mistral 16 deck, protecting it from the elements. Our Mistral 16 cover fits snugly below the rub rail of the hull to seal out dirt and water. The cover installs securely with an elastic cord and ten tie down points. This cover is installed with the mast up and has four cutouts: one for the mast, two for the shrouds, and one for the forestay. The mast cutout has a tall collar with a tie closure and a heavy duty (large #10 black plastic YKK) zipper is used between the mast base cutout and the starboard shroud cutout for ease of use and durability. The zipper is also covered with a flap of fabric to increase UV resistance. The forestay and the shrouds have Velcro flap closures.

You can add straps and/or reflective tape in the upgrade menu found above. We offer this cover in three different fabric types, look over the fabrics in the drop down chart below.
