LIONHEART Yacht – Enchanting $150M Superyacht

LIONHEART yacht is a 90-metre (295 ft) motor yacht built by Benetti in Italy. She was delivered in July of 2016 to the current owner who recently sold his brands Topshop and Selfridges, gaining him a net worth of US $2.4 billion.

LIONHEART features a sleek and modern design with space for up to 12 guests and 30 crew members. Her home berth lies in Monaco, which is where Green and his family spend most of their time.

LIONHEART yacht interior

The LIONHEART yacht features a lot of intricate details in its design that make her stand out from other comparable vessels on the market.

The interior of this yacht had exceptionally high-quality materials used in her construction, which gives her an elegant look and feel throughout all the different spaces on board.

The design house Green & Mingarelli is responsible for the luxurious interior design of LIONHEART.

The LIONHEART yacht can welcome 12 guests in her six cabins as well as a crew of 30 members of staff.

The interior of the yacht features a beach club, a beauty salon as well as expansive health and wellness facilities that include a spa, a hairdressing salon, a gym with a personal trainer, and a massage room with a masseur available at all hours.

The different floors of the yacht are connected by an elevator, and of course, the yacht has several pools, two of which are located on the upper decks.

A grand staircase is situated in the center of the yacht, which gives the vessel the likeness of a luxury hotel. The interior is furnished with exclusive furniture with dark wood and cream upholstery.

The yacht features several sizable chandeliers and other extravagant lighting fixtures. Everything about the interior of LIONHEART is lavish and luxurious, flaunting the US $150 Million price tag that this incredible vessel bears.

Specifications

The LIONHEART yacht is 90 meters (296 ft) long with a beam of 14.4 meters (47.3 ft) and a draft of 7.5 meters (24.9 ft). She was built by Benetti Yachts in Livorno, Italy, and launched in 2016.

At the time, LIONHEART was Benetti’s flagship and the largest yacht they had ever produced, overtaking NABILA (later TRUMP PRINCESS owned by Donald Trump).

Her gross tonnage lies at 2,990 GT, reaching cruising speeds of 15 knots and maximum speeds of 16 knots.

She is definitely not the fastest yacht in her size category, but her caterpillar engines are reliable and robust.

LIONHEART has an immense aluminum superstructure, and her hull was constructed from premium steel. Her traditional teak decks nicely contrast her white exterior.

The LIONHEART yacht is values at US $150 million and has annual running costs of US $10-$15 Million. She is not currently available for charter or for sale, although Green’s other yachts are.

The exterior of the LIONHEART yacht was designed by Stefano Natucci, who was also responsible for LIONESS V, Green’s previous yacht by Benetti.

Natucci has designed a total of 45 yachts, the LIONHEART yacht being the largest of his past projects.

The yacht is fitted with a sophisticated stabilizer system that ensures a comfortable experience for guests when at anchor or underway. She has a total of four decks featuring generous outdoor spaces.

The front of the bow has room for a small helipad where aircraft can land to pick up or drop off guests.

The top deck has an outdoor bar and jacuzzi, and behind the flybridge, there is a large pool.

All decks have luxurious outdoor seating with cream upholstery which is also the color of the crew uniforms aboard the LIONHEART yacht.

At the aft, the yacht has a sizable beach club and extendable swimming platform where water toys can be launched.

She also has several smaller, shaded decks with ample space for dining or parties. On both her port and starboard sides, Lionheart has small balcony decks which are attached to two of the suites.

Toys and equipment

The LIONHEART yacht carries several tenders, although her most memorable is a VanDutch 55 named Lioncub.

This tender has a black and white photograph of a lion painted on its side, making it stand out from traditional tenders and attracting yacht spotters.

LIONHEART also has a Pascoe Limousine, a Pascoe Beachlande, and a Pascoe Outboard Shuttle giving her passengers a wide selection of transportation options for shore leave or excursions.

Although exact details aren’t known, the yacht carries a large number of water toys, including jet skis and water bobs.

With a large swimming platform at the back of the vessel and an attached beach club with a lounge area, a luxury that might be desired is available to her guests.

Additional information

Construction for LIONHEART began in 2012 after the owner Green commissioned his third yacht from Benetti .

The two previous vessels were also named LIONHEART but have since been renamed LUMIERE and LIONESS V.

LUMIERE was built in 1999 and has a length of 49.9 meters (164 ft). Green sold her when he obtained LIONHEART V in 2006, and she is now available for charter.

LIONESS V has a length of 63.5 meters (208 ft) and was replaced by LIONHEART in 2016, 10 years after her launch.

Interestingly all three vessels can welcome the same number of guests, and only their amenities and length changed over the years.

LIONESS V is still owned by the Green family, more specifically Tina Green. This yacht is available for charter.

Sir Philip Green’s super-yacht quarantined in Monaco over coronavirus outbreak

Lionheart_Monaco_2017

The $150 million and 90-meter-long super-yacht Lionheart has been docked at Monaco’s Port Hercule for over a week. Two crew members tested positive for coronavirus.

The impressive luxury vessel belongs to Sir Philip Green, British billionaire and owner of Topshop, and his wife Lady Tina Green, who is a Monaco resident. The Lionheart is the biggest yacht ever built by historic Italian yacht-maker Benetti and was bought by Sir Philip Green for an estimated 150 million dollars. The yacht has space for 16 crew members and can welcome up to 12 people.

At the time, the purchase of this yacht raised public concern in the United Kingdom. The supe-yacht was bought by Green one year after the British tycoon sold BHS clothing stores to a little-known investor for £1.

Philip Green’s retail business has been hard-hit by the pandemic and in April it was announced that he had taken government money to pay for staff during the Coronavirus lockdown. Over the last 4 years, his wealth has drastically diminished. Forbes estimates that from $5,9 billion in 2016, Philip and Tina Green are now worth a “mere” $2,2 billion.

Coronavirus outbreak on board

“After maintenance in Italy, the boat returned to Monaco. We were meant to go on a cruise with my family. It was my responsibility to have the whole crew tested before leaving. We then discovered two cases — one asymptomatic and the other with a sore throat. The two have been confined to the cabin ever since,” Lady Tina Green told the local newspaper Monaco Mati n . She added that everyone was well.

According to Monaco Matin , 14 boats have now been asked to quarantine by Monaco’s government since the start of the pandemic . Their status is indicated by a yellow flag hoisted on the mast. The Lionheart question should be solved quickly enough. According to local media, all of the new tests conducted on the yacht’s crew at the beginning of the week came back negative.

Beyond the call of duty

The captain of m/y lionheart on how to cope when your vessel is put under the media spotlight….

Image for article Beyond the call of duty

The 20th edition of the Benetti Yachtmaster event saw an exclusive interview with the captain of M/Y Lionheart , Thomas Jones, who share his experience of working on board a vessel that is regularly placed under the media spotlight.   After being inspired by a cousin he entered the industry after finishing school, as a deckhand,  but it took him four-and-a-half years before he found his first role as a captain.

The opportunity to work on board Lionheart came through his wife, who was already working on board for the current owner. “He told her that he was looking for a new captain and asked if I would be interested, and before even consulting me, she said ‘of course he is!’ That was twelve years ago,” recalls Jones.   Jones started off working for his current owner when he had a 35m, before the owner then moved on to a 63m vessel. “The biggest issue in this change was the crew and the management of the crew. Nothing changed hugely in terms of driving the boat; the skills required to drive a 35m are transferrable,” he says.   Both chief engineers are still currently working with Jones, as is the chef and the chief officer is now his rotational captain.   The owner then made the jump from a 60m vessel to a 90m vessel. When asked about adapting to a vessel of that size Jones notes that he had two years to consider his steps before the vessel was launched, having “put a lot of thought in”, he explains.     “I really wanted to transfer the same team mentality over to the 90m vessel”, he continues.  “I didn’t want the situation where we had nameless crew, it was important to maintain the family feel on board.”   “On the management side I went away and got myself some training during the two-year build process to help work out who I am as a captain and as a leader and to try and see if I could transfer the skills onto the next vessel.”   What Jones is keen to emphasise as a captain is the importance of finding the right owner: “find the owner, not the boat.”   When the 90m Lionheart was first launched, the boat and its owner were immediately put under the spotlight of the media. “It was quite a stressful period,” says Jones. “We were being followed everywhere during our main season. It was extremely distracting and we were always calculating how long it would take before someone came around us or flew overhead.”   When media interest first sparked, Jones sat down with his crew to discuss the situation: “I explained that it’s not our job to try to explain or justify anything, we just need to be polite and respectful and get on with our job without interacting with what’s going on around you.   “There were many times where the press were buzzing around the boat or they cornered one or two of the crew when they were on shore. We’re not trained to deal with the press, however my crew are extremely professional and they just got on with their job and didn’t interact with anyone. It was difficult as we are in the service industry and it goes against our natural instinct to respond to questions; normally when people ask questions we try to give them an answer!   “What I did do at the end of the first season was get a media relations company to come and give them some formal training - just to give them the tools to protect themselves and the owner, as well as the opportunity to talk about what happened.”   Jones doesn’t hesitate in emphasising the value of such courses and making oneself open to criticism when dealing with situations that fall outside of one’s job description.

Caribbean authorities say missing American couple is feared dead after 3 prisoners hijacked yacht

F ORT PIERCE, Fla. – An American couple who went missing while sailing off the coast of Grenada is feared dead after their catamaran yacht was hijacked by three escaped prisoners, authorities said.

The Royal Grenada Police Force said in a statement released Thursday that they were working on leads "that suggest" that the two occupants of the yacht – named Simplicity – may have been killed. While details on the incident remain unclear, police said preliminary information indicates that the case is likely tied to the escape of the three prisoners.

"It is believed that the occupants of the yacht were American citizens," police said, adding that the investigation was still in "its infancy stage."

The nonprofit Salty Dawg Sailing Association identified the couple as Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry in a statement . The association noted that the pair were veteran cruisers and longtime members of the association, calling them "warmhearted and capable."

"This is a very upsetting event and details are still unconfirmed by the authorities, but this does appear to be a tragic event," Bob Osborn, the association’s president, said in the statement. "In all my years of cruising the Caribbean, I have never heard of anything like this."

Hendry and Brandel were last seen on Feb. 18 and are believed to have been killed the following day near the shores of Grand Anse Beach in Grenada, according to a GoFundMe page raising money for their family. The funds raised will help cover funeral costs and recover the couple's vessel and belongings.

Missing couple's yacht found 'anchored and abandoned'

Hendry and Brandel were on their final voyage with the Salty Dawg Sailing Association when their yacht was found, "bearing chilling evidence of a violent struggle," the GoFundMe page states.

The association said it was alerted by a cruising skipper about a member's yacht, Simplicity, that was found "anchored and abandoned" off a beach on the island of St. Vincent. The association added that its live member’s tracking map showed the vessel anchored in Grenada before it moved to its last anchorage off St. Vincent.

"The good Samaritan had boarded the boat and noted that the owners … were not on board and found evidence of apparent violence," the association said. The St. Vincent Coast Guard took possession of Simplicity and local police are investigating with the U.S. Embassy and the Grenada police, according to the association.

On Saturday, family members of the couple met with authorities in St. Vincent, where they were seen boarding the vessel – which was being guarded by officials, one of whom was wearing latex gloves.

Hendry's family issued a statement Saturday thanking police, local coast guards, and those who helped authorities gather information. They also asked that all those trying to conduct independent searches "stand down."

"It means so much to us that so many people cared for Ralph and Kathy as friends and fellow cruisers that they are willing to stop and help in whatever way possible," the family said.

Missing Texas girl found dead: What to know about missing children cases

Incident coincided with the escape of prisoners

Authorities in Grenada are investigating what happened to the couple and said they had dispatched senior investigators and a forensic specialist to St. Vincent, where the escaped prisoners were arrested Wednesday.

According to Grenada police, preliminary information suggests that the prisoners hijacked the yacht in St. George’s in Grenada, and traveled to the nearby island of St. Vincent. The three men had escaped from their holding cell on Feb. 18, police said.

The prisoners, ages 19, 25, and 30, were arrested and charged in December with one count of robbery with violence. The eldest inmate also was charged with one count of rape, three counts of attempted rape, and two counts of indecent assault and causing harm, police said.

Couple remembered by family, friends

According to the GoFundMe page, Hendry and Brandel were "seasoned sailors who lived on their beloved catamaran."

The pair spent their retirement sailing, the GoFundMe page states. The couple had sailed their yacht in last year's Caribbean Rally from Hampton, Virginia, to Antigua, and were spending the winter cruising in the eastern Caribbean, the Salty Dawg Sailing Association said.

WPTV-Channel 5 reported that the couple spent their winters docked at a Fort Pierce, Florida, marina, according to Hendry's sister, Suellen Desmaris.

"This was their whole life. They didn't own another home, they didn't own cars, they owned Simplicity," Desmarais told WPTV . "And when you were invited onto Simplicity, you were made to feel as magical as they were and as magical as that boat was."

The couple had previously docked their catamaran at the Safe Harbor Harbortown Marina in Fort Pierce.

"They were the sweetest people," Keith Mallamo said in an email to TCPalm, part of the USA TODAY Network. Mallamo said he was friends with the couple when they docked their vessels at the marina in Fort Pierce.

One Christmas, Brendel baked cookies for everyone on the dock, and Hendry was always available to help his fellow sailors, Mallamo wrote.

Lionheart, K-18

Lionheart, K-18, photo by Martin Everard

Built in 1979 according to the International Third Rule- America’s Cup.

1979-1980: Commissioned by the British Industry 1500 Club, Lionheart was a heavy displacement yacht built for the 1980 America’s Cup. Her most innovative feature was a “bendy” mast that increased her sail area by nearly 7%. She proved to be very fast in a straight line but had a lack of maneuverability when compared to other twelves. She was beaten by France II after a close fight at the 24th America’s Cup Challenger Trials.

1981-1983: Peter de Savary had her altered in 1982 and sailed her as a trail horse against Victory ’82 and Victory ’83 . By 1991 she was in the U.S. managed by Intrepid Marketing with her home port in Seekonk, MA.

since 1991: Owned by Harry H. Graves, Lionheart is sailed and raced with the Newport 12 metre fleet.

Ranger may have been christened the ‘Super J’ in her time, but in the modern fleet Lionheart, at 142ft 5in, is now the largest. She was built for a Dutch owner and then put on the market on the day she was launched in June 2010 after a five-year project.

Lionheart broke away from the Dykstra & Partners grip and was designed by fellow Dutch naval architect André Hoek and she’s the first replica of a boat that was never actually built – she was design 77F, one of seven rejected Ranger models from 1936.

When Lionheart was commissioned, her owner asked Hoek to recreate the fastest J. The designer undertook detailed performance analysis of all 20 original designs. “We developed a VPP program specifically for long-keeled boats and used a 20ft model to calibrate the software,” Hoek explains. “The best all-rounder came out as 77F.”

After licensing the design from S&S, Hoek configured the aluminium hull and, as they weren’t following an original build, optimised mast position and rudder design, detailing longitudinal strength, to allow an extra 10 tonnes of load on the runners compared with existing Js to reduce forestay sag.

On the water she looks more a cross between a J Class and a superyacht, with a ‘safe’ guest cockpit separating two unusual squared doghouses. Lionheart is geared to race, cruise and charter and is MCA-coded to enable that.

Whether her extreme overhangs and length, freeboard height with bulwarks and such modern deck aesthetics distance her from the true spirit of the J Class is questionable. But the more pertinent issue is how she performs on the racecourse.

Her current owner-driver has campaigned her hard and got his just deserves during the 2014 season when Lionheart won the three major J-Class events in Palma, Menorca and Sardinia. For the 2015 UK regattas she is without regular tactician Bouwe Bekking and some of his fellow Team Brunel crew – but has plenty of local knowledge aboard.

Superyacht Lionheart - Worlds Largest J-Class Launched

By B. Roberts

The stunning super J-Class yacht Lionheart, recently launched by Dutch shipyard Claasen Jachtbouw, has been announced for sale with joint agents YPI Brokerage and Hoek.

Standing at 44m long with an astonishing overhang of 17m, Lionheart is the largest J-Class in the world. YPI Brokerage, the sales and new construction division of the Monaco based Yachting Partners International, have signed Lionheart for sale alongside Hoek Brokerage.

William Bishop, YPI broker and head of the YPI sailing division, said “This is an amazing moment … Lionheart is quite simply stunning. Anyone who loves sailing is already aware of the philosophy, the history, the technology and the passion that has gone into the construction of Lionheart. That’s what makes this the beginning of a whole new era of J-Class yachting.”

Built to compete at the highest level, Lionheart was originally designed for the Ranger Syndicate by Starling Burgess and Olin Stephens in 1936. Her design was then extensively evaluated and optimised by the Hoek Naval Architects to ensure the highest quality of racing.

“And she is just as much designed for cruising as she is racing,” Will points out. “She has been built to MCA Classification and incorporates two small deckhouses and two small cockpits for the owner and his/her guests – that gives extra versatility on how the yacht can be used whether racing or cruising.”

Alongside her expert construction, her racing capabilities benefitted from the wealth of experience added to the project by Hall Spars in the building of her spars as well as utilising Harkens proven Carbon winches.

William Bishop added “Lionheart is very competitively price … She represents a unique opportunity today for an owner looking for performance but with the added versatility of an intelligent cruising configuration. Lionheart is a new breed of J-Class and we are very proud to be representing her for sale alongside Hoek Brokerage.”

Lionheart is for sale through YPI Brokerage at an Asking Price of €14,900,000.

Five years after towing the world’s only floating nuclear power plant into the Arctic, Russia’s State Nuclear Energy Corporation, Rosatom, delivered a fresh batch of nuclear fuel to the facility.

The nuclear material traveled along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) from Murmansk to Pevek aboard the cargo ship  Smp Arkhangelsk .

Ship records indicate that the vessel has a long history of safety violations and deficiencies recorded during inspections over the last decade. The vessel’s owner, Northern Shipping Company, has also been  under sanctions by the US  since May 2022.

The transport of nuclear fuel customarily occurs on highly specialized vessels under strict international guidelines. The carrying of nuclear fuel on a conventional cargo ship across the Arctic’s icy waters is a cause for concern, according to industry experts interviewed by HNN.

The nuclear fuel was  manufactured by Rosatom fuel company “TVEL”  in Elektrostal near Moscow before it was dispatched aboard  Smp Arkhangelsk  from Murmansk on September 15. The vessel arrived in Pevek 10 days later and took up position next to Akademik Lomonosov.

Based on satellite images analyzed by HNN the transfer of fuel took approximately 10 days.

A history of deficiencies

The vessel, constructed in 2002 by Damen Shipyard in Romania, has passed through the hands of seven different owners before arriving with its current operator, Northern Shipping Company.

Port inspections going back more than a decade reveal violations ranging from missing voyage data recorder, lack of rescue boats and defect fire pumps, to inoperative auxiliary engines and MARPOL pollution prevention violations.

While some of the violations were minor and none were severe enough to necessitate the detention of the vessel, they do paint a picture of an aging ship with ongoing deficiencies. Available public records also do not show any inspections since 2021.

Smp Arkhangelsk violations overview.

“Considering this a voyage with dangerous cargo, it is pushing the limits,” explains Sigurd Enge, Senior Advisor on Shipping at Bellona Foundation, an international environmental NGO headquartered in Oslo, Norway.

“The risk connected to this vessel, on the Northern Sea Route in October is high, and based on their [safety inspection] track record, is very high,” continues Enge, who is one of the most experienced advisers at Bellona, working on marine safety.

“The Port State Controls with violation indicates that there is a high risk that an incident can occur. And with a history of lack of safety equipment, inadequate propulsion and auxiliary machinery, certificates and fire pumps, an incident can quickly turn into a serious event in terms of firefighting, safety equipment and skills.”

Not following international customs

The transport of nuclear materials in international waters is highly regulated, with a short list of specialized vessels, such as British freighters  Pacific Egret  or  Pacific Grebe , doing the work. Nuclear material must also be stored in highly secured containers.

The use of a ship not specialized in the transport of nuclear fuel shows limited options available to Russia “as there are ships that carry out this type of loading in Europe, for example,” explains Hervé Baudu, Chief Professor of Maritime Education at the French Maritime Academy (ENSM)

“This is clearly a case where Russia is proceeding in its own waters and territories with the means at its disposal. Admittedly, the ship does not comply with international requirements, but let’s hope that the containers carrying the waste or fuel do,” he continues.

Based on the type deficiencies and where they were registered the ship is “not used to international customs and regulations,” explains Baudu.

Risks related to time of year

The vessel’s lower Arc4 ice-class is also a cause for concern, with Enge calling it “not so reassuring.”

“To operate on the NSR at this time of year involves a risk. In October, the ice conditions can change fast, with new ice formation and strong wind and various temperatures the ice cover can move fast.”

“It seems that the authorities are willing to carry out voyages ‘at any cost’.” Hervé Baudu, Chief Professor of Maritime Education at the French Maritime Academy

Given the possibility of rapidly changing conditions, including weather and ice conditions, “the risk for dangerous cargo transport with not well-equipped ships is unacceptable,” concludes Sigurd.

This holds especially true given Russia’s history related to the dumping of radioactive materials and sunken submarines across the Arctic in the Barents and the Kara Sea.

Pushing ahead despite sanctions

The shipment of nuclear fuel  follows the initial transport of crude oil to China across the Arctic  on aging non-ice class oil tankers a few weeks ago.

“We are seeing violations of environmental rights with oil tankers from a fleet that is black and potentially dangerous as long as there is war in Ukraine,” elaborates Baudu.

Enge concurs that sanctions have impacted operations on the NSR.

“The need to use the route for transport eastward makes the government more willing to push the limits for safety and “clean and safe operations in general. It seems that the authorities are willing to carry out voyages ‘at any cost’.”

Rosatom and TVEL did not respond to requests for comment.
