LADY A offers an appealing mix of a classic Jon Bannenberg exterior design on a yacht that was almost entirely rebuilt in 2017 at a cost of more than €12 million.

The exterior of this luxury superyacht features many of Bannenberg’s signature design notes but has been modernised and now boasts amenities such as her new sun deck with Jacuzzi and impressive living areas.

Exterior Design & Engineering

First launched in 1986 and built in Japan by Nishii Zosen-Sterling, the LADY A yacht is one of the most distinctive yachts on the water.

In 2017 she was rebuilt at Burgess Marine in the UK. This 10-month project extended the aft end of the upper deck to create more space for exterior seating and social spaces, and her interior was comprehensively refitted. The LADY A motor yacht also underwent minor structural, mechanical and electrical modifications and got new Quantum zero-speed stabilisers installed.

The main salon is unusually located on the upper deck of the LADY A yacht. It’s spacious and open plan, enclosing a generous lounge area that faces an extra-large television screen, a sit-up bar with chairs looking through the port-side windows, and a formal dining room that seats 12.

Sliding doors lead from the salon through to the upper deck, where another dining table can be found. The two seating areas aft offer exceptional views and are a perfect spot to sip your morning coffee or enjoy a sundowner.

Steps lead you from the upper deck down to the main deck aft, where you’ll find plenty of sun loungers you can recline across. There’s more than enough space to roll out your yoga mat or set up your exercise equipment—or you can stretch out on the bench that lines the aft.

The sun deck of the LADY A yacht is a particular highlight. Sitting within the yacht’s raised upper works, it features a forward curved sofa that parasols can shade and day beds that overlook the bow of the yacht.

If you get thirsty, you can head amidship to pick up a drink at the bar. You can pull up a seat here or move back to sit on the pair of facing sofas. Keep heading back, and you’ll come across a Jacuzzi.

Interior Design

The refreshed interior of the LADY A yacht features walnut cabinetry and solid timer floors, softened by plush furnishings. Plenty of generous windows ensure there’s lots of natural light inside.

The LADY A yacht for sale can accommodate 12 guests in six luxurious en suite cabins. The full-beam owner’s suite, located on the lower deck, comes with a private study and has its own Jacuzzi, separate shower room and dressing room. Three double guest cabins are also located on the lower deck, while the VIP guest cabin and a twin guest cabin can be found up on the main deck.

Tesla vehicles are facing scrutiny after the death of Angela Chao, a shipping CEO who drowned in a tragic car accident on a Texas ranch last month.

Chao, the sister of former U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and sister-in-law of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., died February 10 after accidentally putting her 2020 Tesla Model X SUV into reverse and backing into a pond, The Wall Street Journal reported . Authorities in Blanco County have refused to release additional information on the accident while an investigation is ongoing. 

According to the Journal, this was not the first time Chao had mistakenly put her Tesla into reverse. Her tragic death has put the spotlight on Tesla's gearshift design, which has received dozens of complaints over the years for confusing users.

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.

Reports have identified the investigation as a criminal probe even though preliminary results suggest that Chao's death was an accident. The Blanco County Sheriff's Office did not respond to multiple requests for comment. 

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) told FOX Business there have been about 20 complaints from vehicle owners about potential shifter issues among Model Year 2015-2023 Tesla Model 3, S and Y vehicles in the last five years. The agency said it has not received specific gearshift complaints about issues with the Model X. 

At least 12 complaints filed with the Department of Transportation and first reported by Business Insider are related to how Tesla vehicles are put into reverse. Seven users have reported confusion with the gearshift design, resulting in them sometimes putting the car into drive when they intended to shift to reverse, or vice versa. Five other complaints were from people who said their Teslas appeared to switch between drive and reverse without warning, according to Business Insider.

More Tesla owners have written about the issue in Tesla forums. In one post, a user in 2022 wrote that they had accidentally "shifted to reverse instead of drive" three times in the two years they'd owned a Tesla.

Another Tesla driver reported in 2022 that they had "just nearly had an accident" because of confusion over how to put the car in reverse. "Within the first month of having my car I did something similar," another user responded, according to Business Insider.

In the 2020 Tesla Model X , users can shift gears using a drive stalk attached to the steering wheel. When the car is in park, the driver must press the brake pedal to shift. To go in reverse, the drive stalk must be pushed all the way up and released. The car will only shift into reverse when Model X is stopped or moving less than 5 mph, the Model X owner's manual states.

Newer Tesla models use a touch screen to shift gears. In both cases, the gearshift is different from the gear selector used in automatic transmission cars or gear stick in manual vehicles. 

In Chao's case, the confusion proved fatal. The Wall Street Journal reported that she got into her Model X to depart from a gathering with friends on her 900 acre ranch in the Texas Hill Country. She attempted to make three-point turn for a quick, four-minute drive back to her house when she accidentally put the SUV into reverse. Chao reportedly called her friends in a panic after the car moved backward and tipped over an embankment and into a pond.

Drivers in a sinking vehicle have only one minute to exit the vehicle safely, according to Dr. Gordon Giesbrecht, a researcher at the University of Manitoba who studies vehicle submersion. The best way out of the vehicle is to open or break the window — a difficult task without a tool called a center punch to smash the window when it is submerged. 

Reaching for a cell phone, as Chao did, can be deadly as it will use precious seconds needed to unbuckle your seatbelt and escape the car. Help will not arrive in time to save anyone trapped inside the vehicle, Giesbrecht's research has found. 

In Chao's case, an emergency unit for Blanco County took 24 minutes to respond to the call for help, according to a fire department incident report reviewed by the Journal. The Tesla vehicle was completely submerged by the time rescue personnel arrived. First responders determined that they needed a dive team, but there was none available. An emergency services worker and firefighter entered the water with rescue tools.

When the car was finally pulled from the water, Chao was found unresponsive inside. Attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful, according to Ben Oakley, emergency services chief of Blanco County.

Angela Chao was the youngest of six children born to James Chao and the late Ruth Mulan Chu Chao, immigrants from China who moved to the U.S. in the 1950s. She was greatly respected in the shipping industry and mourned as a "brilliant woman, a charismatic and visionary leader and much-loved by all her sisters, our entire family and friends," James Chao said in a statement announcing her death.

NHTSA said there are no federal occupant protection requirements for vehicles submerged in water. Glass-breaking tools are not required under federal regulations, but consumers are free to purchase them, an agency spokesperson said.

In February, several reports surfaced about the death of Angela Chao , a Texas-based CEO and the sister-in-law of Mitch McConnell.

Chao died in a "car accident," the first reports stated , but in the following weeks, reporters at the Austin American-Statesman, part of the USA TODAY Network, have pieced together the details of incident, an hours-long, desperate attempt to save her life.

Chao is believed to have drowned after her Tesla veered into a pond on a private ranch in Texas. Local officials have been tight-lipped about the incident , but denied that there is a criminal investigation underway in a recent interview.

"It's always been an unfortunate accident. We have not seen a single thing that would make us believe otherwise," said Robert Woodring, chief deputy for the Blanco County sheriff's office .

Shortly before midnight on Feb. 11, deputies responded to a private address outside of Austin, Texas for a possible water rescue. The property's owner shares an address with Chao's husband's public equity firm.

EMS responders, deputies and firefighters responded to the scene over the next 30 minutes , according to a report authored by a firefighter and obtained by the Statesman. One of emergency officials said the car was "completely submerged" with someone inside. The Associated Press and the Wall Street Journal reported the car was a Tesla.

"The deputies were in the water standing on what they believed was the vehicle, trying to gain access to the possible victim inside the vehicle," wrote fire Lt. Royce Penshorn in the  report.

Other crew-members searched the banks of the pond for other victims and set up lighting. A tow truck arrived, but the chains couldn't reach the car from the banks, Penshorn reported.

Meanwhile, the deputies atop the vehicle used myriad tools, including a pike pole and a Halligan bar, to try to break into the vehicle, the report said. It was approximately an hour before they got to Chao.

Dive teams not available for rescue

Rescuers pulled the woman from the vehicle at about 12:56 a.m., said the EMS chief Benjamin Oakley. EMS responders delivered "advanced life support" for 43 minutes to try to resuscitate her.

Chao was pronounced dead at the scene.

No dive team was available to be sent to the ranch, Penshorn's report says. Oakley said no emergency response agencies in Blanco County have a dive team, so they rely on teams from neighboring counties when needed.

Such teams are generally tasked with recovering bodies, not rescues, he said.

Who was Angela Chao?

Chao, who lived in Austin , was CEO of Foremost Group, a New York-based global leader in the dry bulk shipping industry.

She took the helm of Foremost Group from her father, Dr. James S.C. Chao, who founded the company and served as its honorary chairman. She was a Harvard University graduate, earning both her undergraduate and graduate degrees there, according to her website.

Chao is also a published author on topics of economics, international trade and finance, and education.

She is survived by her husband Jim Breyer, an American venture capitalist and founder and CEO of Breyer Capital, which is headquartered in Austin.

Chao's older sister is  Elaine Chao , who served as transportation secretary under former President Donald Trump and labor secretary under former President George W. Bush. The elder Chao is married to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky).
