Hong Kong to Vietnam Race Returns in October 2023

BY Anna Cummins on 25 Jul 2023

Asia's longest Category One offshore race was forced to take a hiatus during the Covid pandemic

Hong Kong to Vietnam Race

The Hong Kong to Vietnam Race, Asia’s longest Category One offshore race, which takes competitors 673nm from Hong Kong to the coastal city of Nha Trang, Vietnam, is back after a hiatus of four years due to the Covid pandemic.

There are now fewer than 100 days until the 10th edition of the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race , which starts on 24 and 25 October 2023.

This blast across the South China Sea is recognised as a qualifier for the Rolex Sydney-Hobart Race . It was first run in 1996 and then regularly since 2004. The 2019 edition attracted a slew of international entries hailing from Great Britain, Italy, Singapore and the United States.

The focal point was the battle for Multihull Line Honours between two racing trimarans; Italian Maserati Multi70 and Hong Kong entry SHK Scallywag/Fuku . Meitatsu Fukumoto and Seng Huang Lee’s SHK Scallywag Fuku took the win and set a new Multihull Race Record of 30h 09m 27s, just under two hours ahead of Maserati.

The current Monohull Race Record of 41h 30m 20s was also set in 2019 by professionally crewed Lucky , a US-based J/V Maxi 72 skippered by Bryon Ehrhart, beating the previous race record of 42h 17m 24s set by Syd Fischer’s Ragamuffin 100 in 2015.

Hong Kong to Vietnam Race

“I think the [race] is one of the most iconic races in Asia, and certainly one of the best that I do,” says veteran race participant Geoff Hill. “The race should be on every sailor’s bucket list along with the RHKYC’s Club’s flagship offshore, the Rolex China Sea Race.”

Those interested in keeping up with the latest news should follow the event’s Facebook page . Registration is also open for those sailors who are interested in joining the race.

With 50 days to go, international entries from three countries mark the first signups for the 10th edition of the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race; a 673nm predominantly downwind run to Nha Trang, Vietnam.

Racing kicks off on 24 and 25 October 2023 on Victoria Harbour in front of  Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club ‘s main Clubhouse at Kellett Island.

The Category 1 Offshore race is known for its windy and warm weather sailing conditions and is run under the auspices of Royal Ocean Racing Club. Racing finishes in Nha Trang which boasts many family-friendly resorts.

The first entries hail from Italy, Philippines and the United States. Among them for the first time are two boats from the Standard Insurance Centennial team. Ernesto Echauz’s Reichel Pugh 75 Standard Insurance Centennial 5 which took Line Honours in the Rolex China Sea Race earlier this year, is testing their offshore ability together with teammates on board TP52 Standard Insurance Centennial 3 helmed by Emerson Villena making their first appearance in the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race.

Italian Maserati Multi70 skipped by Giovanni Soldini is back for their second edition of the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race. After narrowly missed the oceanic match race against another Hong Kong trimaran, Orma 60 SHK Scallywag Fuku, Maserati Multi70 took Multihull Line Honours in the 2023 RORC Transatlantic Race and is set to challenge the multihull speed record.

Also to be watched is American Jim Murray with his Pac52 Callisto. Callisto has extensive offshore racing experience in America and just took 2nd place in the RORC Caribbean 600 IRC 0 division. The Hong Kong to Vietnam Race will be their first Asian offshore race.

Hong Kong to Vietnam Race 2021

This is my first time, is this ok?

Beginners without experience can participate in the regatta, since on the yacht there is always a professional skipper with extensive experience who will teach you everything you need for your role on the boat. In addition, as a rule, there are experienced yachtsmen in the crew who will help you get settled and feel comfortable.

What is included and not included in the price?

As a rule, the cost of participation in the regatta includes:.

— accommodation on a yacht for the duration of the regatta;

— bed linen and towels;

— organizational fee;

— skipper services;

— the cost of mooring in marinas;

— basic sailing training;

— a yacht polo or t-shirts from the organizers.

Additional expenses you will need to pay:

— airplane tickets and transfer to the marina;

— a visa. However, we will give you an invitation and confirmation of accommodation booking for the embassy. Visas for sporting events are easy to get;

— personal expenses.

You cannot choose a team?

Can I participate in a regatta if I don’t have yachting experience?

Yes, of course. There will be an experienced skipper and team members on the yacht. They will give you a role and teach you everything you need to know to be a useful team member and feel comfortable.

Will I be able to steer a yacht?

Yes, all team members will definitely try themselves in different roles to better understand each other. Standing at the helm is an integral part of training for beginners as well as setting sails, and helping the team during moorings.

Where will I live during the regatta?

As a rule, participants in the regatta live on the yacht. The boat has everything you need for a comfortable stay: nice beds, a kitchen, a shower with toilet. If you do not want to live on a yacht, then you can arrange to stay at the hotel onshore.

What will we eat?

The crew decides altogether what kind of food they prefer to eat and makes necessary purchases. Simple dishes can be cooked, usually taking turns. Some regattas offer daily meals and intensive evening program for all crews.

Do you help with a visa?

We can make an invitation for a visa, but you need to apply for a visa by yourself.

Will I have seasick? What should I do if I have sickness?

Most people tolerate some seasickness easily. If you feel that you are starting to feel sick, it is best to get at the steering wheel or tune the sails. Get yourself busy, show your body that you don’t have time to get sick, you have to fight for victory in the race. There are also many quite effective medicines from sickness. If you start taking them in advance, then the probability of seasickness is almost zero.

How and where will I meet the crew and the captain?

Before each trip, we organize an online meeting where participants get to know each other and the captain. The captain will answer all your questions. The crew will have a group chat so you can get to know each other before the start of the regatta. Then you will meet in the marina.

What clothes do I need?

The main rule is to dress comfortably and according to the weather. Clothing: • windbreaker and pants or shorts; • shirt/jacket with UV protection (thermal underwear and fleece); • adjustable hat/cap; • gloves. We recommend to purchase a long-sleeved jacket with UV protection in order to protect yourself from the sun and strong wind. Yachting shoes should be: • light, with non-slip white outsole; • with the fixed heel; • with a tightly closed nose. During the sailing without shoes, you can fall or injure your fingers and feet on the deck. There are many protruding parts on the boat that are easy to catch. Unfortunately, even experienced sailors are not protected from unpleasant injuries when they ignore this simple rule.

Hong Kong to Vietnam Race Welcomes World-Class Trimaran Showdown

Maserati Multi70 and the 60ft SHK Scallywag/Fuku, both professionally crewed, head entries for the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race and set off on October 16.

The ninth Hong Kong to Vietnam Race will feature two racing trimarans for the first time, with globe-trotting Maserati Multi70 and Hong Kong entry SHK Scallywag/Fuku the favourites to cross the line first in Nha Trang. Professionally crewed Lucky , a US-based J/V Maxi 72 owned and skippered by Bryon Ehrhart, is among leading contenders for monohull line honours.

Skippered by Italian Giovanni Soldini, Maserati Multi70 is making her debut in the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race debut

Maserati Multi70 is making her debut in the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race

Maserati Multi70 , skippered by Italian Giovanni Soldini, established the Hong Kong to London sailing record in 2017 and joins SHK Scallywag/Fuku as the leading contenders to beat the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race record of 42h 17m 24s, set in 2015 by Syd Fischer’s Ragamuffin 100 , clocking an average VMG of 15.8 knots.

Hong Kong-based Malaysian Seng Huang Lee, Group Executive Chairman of Sun Hung Kai & Co, and Meitatsu Fukumoto of Japan are the co-owners of SHK Scallywag/Fuku , an ORMA 60 they bought in 2018 from Australian Sean Langman. Previously  Team Australia , the 60ft trimaran holds the World Sailing Speed Record Council record of 1d 5h 52m 23s between Sydney and Hobart, achieving top speeds of 39.6 knots.

SHK Scallywag/Fuku trimaran is managed and skippered by Australian David Witt, who also skippers Lee’s super maxi SHK Scallywag 100 , a regular contender in the annual Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in late December.

The start of this year’s Hong Kong to Vietnam Race is split over two days, with the slower IRC Racer 2 division setting out on Tuesday, October 15, before the IRC 1, IRC 0 and MOCRA Multihull classes begin their chase on Wednesday, October 16.

Organised by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, the biennial 673nm race is usually a fast, predominantly downwind run in 25-30 knots, although teams need to account for current, shifts and exclusion zones before the vagaries of Nha Trang Bay on Vietnam’s southeast coast. Upon arrival, the boats will be based at the newly constructed Ana Marina, Vietnam’s first marina.

Race Chairman Joachim Isler said: “Without question, this is one of the most rewarding offshore races on the globe. Downwind surfing for almost 700nm in 20-30 knots of wind and tropical temperatures … it doesn’t get better than that. The race is not without challenges, though. All in all, it’s a very special and unique race.”

Recognised as a Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race qualifier, the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race alternates with the Hong Kong to Hainan Race each year as the conclusion to the China Coast Race Week, which starts with the China Coast Regatta (October 11-13).

Established in 1993, the China Coast Regatta is based out of Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s Middle Island clubhouse, with sailors competing in a variety of windward/leeward and island courses.

Due to the delayed arrival of the northeasterly monsoon, the forecast for the upcoming 27th edition is a light breeze for the first two days of racing. The monsoon is predicted to fill in on Sunday, bringing promising conditions for the 31 yachts competing across six divisions, with the biggest contingent coming from IRC Racer 2.

Ellian Perch’s Cape 31, Orion DYP, which made the journey to Hong Kong from South Africa, is set to compete against a slew of locally based strong competitors including as Glenn Smith’s Blackjack , Herman Wong’s Kiasu , and Noel Chan and Denis Ma’s Rampage .

The five-strong IRC Racer 0 division includes three TP52s: FreeFire ( Sam Chan), Phoenix (Robert Wiest, Victor Kuk and David Ho) and Ark323 (Ting Lee and Hongquan Li) from mainland China. They are joined by another head-to-head competition between Marcel Liedts’ Ker 46 Zannekin and Shawn Kang’s Ker46+ Alpha + .

Many eyes will be on Fred Kinmonth and Nick Burns’  Mandrake III (IRC Racer 1 winner in 2016 and 2017) taking on Joachim Isler and Andrew Taylor’s Ambush , with Rampage II, Seawolf 2, Quest and Neo One also in the mix. IRC Racer 3 comprises six strong local teams including Dexter II, Whiskey Jack and Arcturus .

IRC Racer and Premier Cruiser Classes will race from October 11-13, with the HKPN Class from October 12-13. Racing takes place in the waters to the east and south of Hong Kong Island, with some islands courses extending into the waters to the east of Sai Kung.
