Getting through Great Yarmouth means crossing Breydon Water which can be rough in high winds.

This means planning ahead and crossing at the right times at low water. Don't attempt to cross in fog.

You'll need to cross Breydon Water if you want to cruise between the northern rivers (Bure, Ant and Thurne) and the southern rivers (Yare, Chet and Waveney).

If in doubt whether it's safe to cross, call Broads Control on 01603 756056 or Great Yarmouth Yacht Station on 01493 842794.

  • Time your arrival in Great Yarmouth to coincide with the right tide - slack, low water or just after, which is approximately one hour after low water at Great Yarmouth Yacht Station. To find out when low or slack water is check the tide tables.
  • At slack, low water the current is weaker so it's easier to moor and there is more room under bridges. If you try to cross at high water you may not get under bridges and there is nowhere safe to wait for the tide to drop if you are on Breydon side.
  • It will take about 2¼ hours to get to Great Yarmouth from Acle and about 2 hours from Reedham or St Olaves.
  • Stay within posts - there is shallow water outside the posted channel.
  • Everyone should wear a life jacket, but especially when crossing Breydon Water.
  • Make sure your mobile phone is charged.

You can download a  Download a map and instructions (PDF) here.

Ranger patrols on Breydon

Regular ranger patrols are made to coincide with high tide at Great Yarmouth Yacht Station during the summer and updates are passed regularly to the Yacht Station and Broads Control. If in doubt, check with Great Yarmouth Yacht Station 01493 842794. Passage should not be attempted in fog.

You'll find additional information from rangers in our Breydon navigation notes .

Breydon Water byelaws

Broads Authority Speed Limit Byelaws apply on Breydon Water although there are no speed limits. All vessels must exercise care navigating this stretch under the Broads Authority Navigation Byelaws .

Norfolk Broads ‘gateway’ £25,000 facelift

Laura Hodgetts

  • Laura Hodgetts
  • August 2, 2013

Transformed yacht station to benefit tourists and local economy

Great Yarmouth’s yacht station has been given a £25,000 revamp by the Broads Authority to turn it into a welcoming visitor information centre .

The new building , situated on the River Bure near Great Yarmouth, was officially opened by the town’s mayor John Burroughs on 26 July.

The building, on Tar Works Road, is at the gateway to Great Yarmouth for those coming in by boat and Broads Authority (BA) quay attendants work from 8am to 8pm daily to help visitors with anything from mooring to advice about the town’s attractions.

Dr John Packman, Broads Authority chief executive, said: ‘Great Yarmouth is pivotal to the Broads network, connecting northern and southern waterways, but until recently the station at this strategic point was cramped, dingy and uninviting.

‘So we carried out a facelift which has transformed the station over recent months into a bright, inspiring visitor information centre where people can feel welcomed, informed and enlightened about the special qualities of the Broads and all that Great Yarmouth has to offer.’

An interactive touch screen has been installed for those wanting to find out more about local wildlife, heritage and waterland while a plasma screen provides boat safety information.

Dr Packman added: ‘Engaging décor and interpretation work, including artwork kindly provided free by local printmaker Rob Barnes and a wonderful frieze relating memoirs of a wherry man, has completely changed the look of the building.

‘The makeover meant the building was pulled under more of a visitor information centre umbrella, with the space opened out to form an information point for visitors and completely changed to look far more enticing and to be a more meaningful part of the Broads experience.’

The £25,000 project was all designed, illustrated and carried out in house by the BA with the support of Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s tourism department who have provided a map outside so if visitors arrive when it is closed they can find out local information.

The medieval fishing port of Great Yarmouth is not only one of Norfolk’s earliest  seaside resorts – having attracted holidaymakers ever since 1760 – it’s also where the Broads flow into the sea and the  gateway between the Northern and Southern Broads river systems.

Whether you are crossing Breydon Water or simply exploring the length of the Bure make sure you stop off at Great Yarmouth to enjoy a day of traditional seaside fun. The town boasts miles of golden sandy beaches bordered by a huge range of attractions plus a historic town to explore and plenty of shopping options.

Fun at the seaside

Most visitors to Great Yarmouth head straight for its famous seafront – The Golden Mile – for its kitsch seaside experience.  This is classic bucket and spade country with Great Yarmouth’s wide, clean central beach offering the perfect place for the kids to play in the sand under the watchful eye of RNLI Lifeguards and the option of deck chair hire and donkey rides.

The beach is flanked by a host of dazzling attractions from amusement arcades to crazy golf.  There is an abundance of cafes, tea rooms and snack stands selling anything from cockles to candy floss, which is perfect to enjoy while meandering along the vibrant promenade between the two Victorian piers.

Don’t miss the Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach, which has the oldest wooden roller coaster in the country, the Scenic Railway, at the south end of the prom, or for little ones head to Joyland, next to the Britannia Pier in the north, for a ride on the world famous snails!   Also on the Golden Mile you will find the Great Yarmouth Sea Life Centre, Merrivale Model Village, bowling alleys and a cinema.

Great Yarmouth is a great place for an evening out and the weekly Wednesday night summer fireworks displays during the school holidays are a real highlight. The evenings start with live music at the Sea Life Centre Gardens from 8pm and culminate with a spectacular display at 10pm.

For more seaside entertainment it’s hard to beat the famous Hippodrome Circus and its water spectaculars (01493 844172). Alternatively, check out the events listings at the Britannia Pier Theatre. 01493 842209.

If you fancy a flutter visit one of Great Yarmouth’s many casinos or head slightly out of town for horse racing at Great Yarmouth Racecourse (01493 84252) If you prefer the Greyhounds don’t miss Yarmouth Stadium (01493 720343) which also hosts stock car races.

History and Heritage

To discover Great Yarmouth’s proud maritime heritage head to its Cultural Quarter on the South Quay where hundreds of fishing boats once docked on the River Yare to unload their catch. Packed full of museums and historic buildings you could spend a whole day admiring this area, which has everything from fine Tudor houses to row cottages as well as the remains of one of the most complete medieval town walls in the UK.

Sights not to be missed include:

  • The award winning Time and Tide Museum of Great Yarmouth Life (01493 743930)
  • The Nelson Museum , which is the only museum in the world dedicated to our National Hero who had a strong connection with Yarmouth (Open: 1 February to 30 November. 01493 850698)
  • The Nelson Monument/Norfolk Naval Pillar (Open: Sundays from June to August)
  • The Tolhouse Gaol, which is one of the oldest gaols in the country telling tales of thieves, smugglers, witches and pirates (Open10am – 4pm Sunday to Friday during Norfolk school holidays only. 01493 858900)
  • The LYDIA EVA – Yarmouth’s last steam drifter. Built in 1930 and now fully restored and moored on the South Quay the Lydia Eva charts the history of fishing in Great Yarmouth. (Open: May to October. 07500 603734.

If you are in need of some retail therapy Great Yarmouth town centre has plenty of shopping options from high street stores to unique, family-run shops.

The market, which is one of the largest and oldest town markets in the UK dating back to the early medieval period, is a great place to start your shopping experience.

The covered section of the market is open six days per week selling everything from fish and chips to groceries and household items. A larger open-air market takes place every Wednesday and Saturday year round, with an additional market visiting the town on Fridays in summer too. A wide range of high street brands and independent shops surround the market place.

If you are looking for a quaint shopping experience with lots of small boutiques visit the Victoria Arcade and the historic Rows leading off the market place. And for something more lively don’t miss the pedestrianised Regent Road, which runs between the town centre and the seafront and is beautifully lit up with street decorations at night.

If you are looking to stock up on food for your holiday Great Yarmouth has a number of supermarkets, including Aldi and Asda, which are a short walk from the moorings at Great Yarmouth Yacht Station.  Great Yarmouth also has a train station plus all the other amenities you might require from banks to pharmacies.

great yarmouth yacht station reviews

Nearest pub to the yacht station was the White Swan beside the river but I have an idea that is no longer open. If you head towards the market place, then the seafront, you will find pubs and restaurants.

It depends on your dates how much will be open for both restaurants, pubs, and fun fair rides. For example pleasure beach may be open weekends only.

Pete's Norfolk Broads Boating Guide

River yare – berney arms to great yarmouth.

This section of the Yare is characterised by the vast skies over Breydon Water with views down to the Port of Yarmouth and beyond to the Scroby Sands Wind Farm. Breydon Water is all that’s left of a vast estuary that would once have stretched to Acle and beyond. The mudflats at low tide are popular with wading birds and other wildfowl.

Map Icon

Keep to the marked channel through Berney Arms. Turn right around the turn- tide jetty for the River Waveney and left for Breydon Water, but do not cut the corner.

Crossing Breydon Water

At almost 4 miles long and a mile wide Breydon Water is subject to a wide tidal range and flow. For this reason it is best crossed at low water, aiming to arrive at Great Yarmouth at slack water. This also ensures enough headroom (7 ft) at the two low bridges at the mouth of the River Bure. Even so when wind and tide are in opposition crossing Breydon Water can be like going out to sea with waves reaching over 2- 3 feet!  If in doubt about the weather conditions check with Great Yarmouth Yacht Station 01493 842794, do not attempt to cross Breydon Water in fog.

At low tide the estuary outside the main channel is very shallow with extensive mud flats on both sides. Keep the green marker posts to your left and the red to your right when crossing from Berney Arms to Great Yarmouth. If you stray outside the marked channel you will run aground. Each year a number of boats stray outside this marked channel and run aground on the mud and have to be rescued  by a tug boat.

Breydon Water

A Cruiser Heading out onto Breydon Water

Breydon Water is a large sheltered inland tidal estuary stretching from Berney Arms in the west to Great Yarmouth in the east.

Although Breydon Water covers a large area, outside the main channel it is very shallow with extensive mud flats on both sides. The area is characterised by its big skies with views across Halvergate Marshes to Stracey Arms Mill on the River Bure and down to the Port of Great Yarmouth.

For naturalists it’s one of the most important estuaries on the east coast. It is a RSBP national nature reserve and designated by the European Union as a (SPA) Special Protection Area. The peak season for birds is during the winter when nearly 100,000 birds over winter here including Golden Plover, Hen Harrier and Widgeon.

Two footpaths run around the edge of Breydon Water, to the north is the Wherryman’s Way and to the south Angles Way. Unfortunately there is no provision to link the two to complete a circular walk, as there is no ferry crossing.  The best option would be to take the train either to or from Berney Arms and walk along the Wherryman’s Way, a distance of 5 ½ miles.

On approaching Breydon Bridge keep to the right and pass beneath the side span marked with the two red arrows.

Yarmouth has strong currents and two low bridges with 6 ft 9 in and 7 ft headroom respectively at average high water. The best time to arrive is slack water or a little after, this is 1 to 1 ½ hours after low water you will then have maximum headroom at the bridges and the flooding tide to carry you up the River Bure. If there is an onshore wind, low water could be delayed, to check ring the Yacht Station on 01493 842794.

If you’ve timed your arrival at Yarmouth correctly then you should have no difficulty in turning to go up the River Bure. If your air draft is not sufficent to pass under the bridges the Broads Authority have provided a lay-by pontoon mooring downstream of Breydon Bridge.

There is a height gauge before the bridges so you can check headroom.

Turn after the yellow dolphin (post)  being mindful of boats coming down the Bure. As you turn to go up the River Bure you may find the tide is still ebbing. Make sure you turn for the Bure in good time. This will then ensure you’re not pushed downstream by the outgoing tide.

The first bridge is the  old Vauxhall rail bridge , the second Yarmouth/Acle road bridge .

Great Yarmouth

Yarmouth grew around the harbour, as it was once a great herring fishing port. The fleet has dwindled over the years and now the harbour is busy with coasters, North Sea gas/oil rig supply ships and frozen food packaging services. Although the old town was heavily bombed during WW2 much of interest still remains, including The Old Merchants House on the ‘rows’ and the Custom House on South Quay.

It was in the 18th century that Yarmouth became popular as a tourist destination, and now tourism is the main industry. On its long promenade, Yarmouth has two piers a leisure centre, arcades and illuminations –  a traditional seaside resort, with attractions to suit all.
