Classic Yachts Challenge Series 2022
The organizing authority (OA) for the Classic Yachts Challenge Series (CYCS) is the Classic Yacht Owners Association (CYOA) in cooperation with the Organizing Authorities of the participating Series Events.
The Series takes place across three Racing Districts: “Maine”, ”Massachusetts”, and ”RI, CT, NY”. To qualify for a Series award a boat must be scored in a minimum of 5 races and 1 of these races must be scored outside the vessel’s declared Racing District. Note that some Series Events have more than 1 race; it is races scored that count.
2022 RESULTS
Over 200 boats participated across 11 regattas
20 races completed, most races sailed: blackfish and zemphira (14).
CYOA’s Annual Meeting on November 11th will present the 2022 Awards at the new Sailing Museum in Newport, Rhode Island. If you cannot attend and you are a CYOA member, please RSVP no and sign the Proxy Form.

The Classic Yachts Challenge Series (CYCS) will kick off this month with the 168th New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta June 10th – 12th in Newport, Rhode Island.
The Tiedemann Classics Regatta re-debuted last year but this year, the Trophy will be incorporated into the Annual Regatta. This event is open to all boats sailing under CRF as modified by the NYYC Classics Rule and is the first in the RI/CT/NY division.
The goal is to get one to two navigator courses per day on Saturday and Sunday sending the boats around Narragansett Bay. Friday the 10th features the “The Around the Island Race” but it does not count as part of the CYCS or the NYYC Annual Regatta.
At the time of this writing, nine classics are registered including last year’s Tiedemann Vintage class winner, Onawa and the overall Vintage CYCS winner, Marilee. Other familiar names will also join the lineup including Angelita, Dorade, Leaf, and Wild Horses. Abigail and Marionette will also be participating ahead of their Bermuda Race start later in the same week.
After the Annual Regatta, the next CYCS event will the be Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club Regatta and Shipyard Cup Classics Challenge on July 23 – 24, 2022.

Most people who need emergency medical care can be appropriately transported by ground ambulance. The sickest patients, however, need the critical care and speed that LifeFlight provides.
LifeFlight services have been used by every hospital in the state, at emergency scenes in more than 330 communities, islands and unorganized townships in every county in Maine.
Eighty per cent of LifeFlight’s missions are from rural, community hospitals to one of Maine’s three trauma centers, or to specialty centers in Boston. Twenty percent of the flights are to accident scenes.
Since our establishment in 1998, more than 19,000 patients have been safely transported by ground or air.
Thanks to the generous support of our 2023 sponsors and fleet participants, the Camden Classics Cup will donate $10,000 to LIfeFlight of Maine. This brings our total contributions to over $85,000!

About the games, the american boycott.
The Olympics were disrupted by another, even larger boycott, this one led by U.S. President Jimmy Carter, part of a package of actions to protest the December 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Carter engaged in extensive arm-twisting to gain support from other nations.
Some governments, like those of Great Britain and Australia, supported the boycott, but allowed the athletes to decide for themselves whether to go to Moscow. No such freedom of choice was allowed U.S. athletes, as Carter threatened to revoke the passport of any athlete who tried to travel to the USSR. In the end, 67 nations did not participate, with 45 to 50 of these nations likely being absent because of the U.S.-led boycott. Eighty nations did participate—the lowest number since 1956.
Olympic Firsts
Aleksandr Dityatin of Russia earned medals in every men's gymnastics event to become the first athlete to win eight medals at one Olympic Games. Super-heavyweight Teófilo Stevenson of Cuba became the first boxer to win the same division three times, and Gerd Wessig of East Germany became the first male high jumper to break the world record at the Olympic Games.
British Duel
British middle-distance runners Steve Ovett and Sebastian Coe faced each other in a memorable confrontation. In the 800m, Ovett won the gold medal ahead of his compatriot. Six days later, a determined Coe redeemed himself in the 1500m. He took the gold, while Ovett managed only a bronze.
Last-Minute Gold
The boycott deprived the inaugural women’s field hockey tournament of all of its entrants except the hosts, USSR. Zimbabwe responded to a late invitation, selecting members less than a week before the Games and rushing to Moscow, then surprised everyone by finishing first.

The Twins’ Victory
Observers of the medal ceremony for the men’s coxless pairs rowing event might have been excused for rubbing their eyes. Both the gold and silver-medal winning teams were comprised of identical twins. Bernd and Jorg Landvoigt of East Germany took first place, while Yuri and Nikolai Pimenov of Russia finished second.
In a Socialist Country
The Olympic Games are held in a socialist country for the first time ever.
