Our sail charter company partner has a superb reputation, not only in the quality of the boats but through the supply chain, and the way the team behind the boat’s construction and crew are looked after. Booking through us you can be assured of a fun, safe and mindful trip for your group or family.

  • 3-hour sunset cruise
  • 7-hour whale and dolphin watching
  • 1-3 overnight residential cruises
  • private charter

The cheaper option for couples and small groups is to take a shared catamaran. For larger groups or romantic privacy, you can charter a boat for 1 to 3 days, either in the day or overnight.

The season in the South West in the southwest is December to April, leaving from Mirissa, however, we can organise sailing trips around the island. There are several other ports you can sail from at different times of the year.

Planning a party? Each boat generally holds a maximum of 35 people or really ‘push the boat’ out and take all 3 catamarans for a sailing group of 100.

For the adventurous, you could also hire a local catamaran from the fisherman, not something we organise but just ask around the harbour.

Please contact us with details about your ideal boat trip.

With its responsive handling and ability to venture into narrower spaces, a sailing boat is ideal for those looking to explore the many hidden gems along the Sri Lankan coast. It’s a choice that combines the age-old romance of sailing with the thrill of discovery.

Catamaran : The epitome of luxury on water. A catamaran, with its twin hulls and expansive deck, offers unparalleled stability and space. This makes it an excellent choice for those traveling with family or a group, ensuring comfort for all on board. The broader and shallower draft of the catamaran allows sailors to anchor closer to beaches, making it perfect for those lazy beachside picnics or snorkeling expeditions in clear lagoons. With its panoramic views and the promise of smooth sailing, a catamaran is for those seeking a blend of luxury and adventure on the Sri Lankan seas.

At Yachting.Rent, our expertise lies in aligning your desires with the perfect vessel. Whether you’re enchanted by the timeless charm of a sailing boat or the modern luxury of a catamaran, we ensure that your voyage around Sri Lanka is nothing short of magical. Let us guide your sails, ensuring that every horizon you chase resonates with the heartbeats of this island paradise.

Sail Lanka Review: Whale Watching Aboard a Luxury Catamaran in South Sri Lanka

Looking for an experience away from the crowds in southern Sri Lanka? Hop aboard a luxury cruise for a different perspective of the Sri Lankan coast!

The palm-fringed coastline of south Sri Lanka is one of the best beach destinations in the world. Take a look at one of its hidden coves and empty stretches of golden-sand beaches and I’m sure you’ll agree with me.

Unakuruwa Beach in south Sri Lanka

If visiting this part of the country is on your Sri Lanka itinerary , then you might also want to add a luxury cruise to your list of things to do. Being on the open water in Sri Lanka is an incredible way to view the coast from a slightly different perspective, and gives you an opportunity to experience life on the Indian Ocean.

Pehebhiya Beach in Dickwella Sri Lanka

This part of the island also happens to be one of the best places in the world to go whale watching in Sri Lanka as it doesn’t take long to reach deep waters where the magnificent cetaceans swim and feed on krill.

For a luxurious and crowd-free whale watching and sailing experience look into hopping aboard one of Sail Lanka’s catamarans. Read on for our experience, but first – a little primer on whale watching in Sri Lanka!

Whale watching in Sri Lanka

Whale watching in Mirissa Sri Lanka

Several species of whales can be found in Sri Lankan waters , including the sperm whale, humpback, Bryde’s and the massive blue whale. They swim and feed on krill here, and can be spotted from small whale watching vessels if you’re lucky.

In the south, whale watching tours are mostly operated out of a small coastal town named Mirissa where you can reach the deep sea in no time flat. But not all whale watching tours are created equal, and the operating standards and prices can vary across the board. Much like jeep drivers who chase and corner wildlife in Sri Lanka’s national parks, some whale watching boats harass the whales by revving their engines and getting way too close, causing whales to become stressed and alter their behaviour.

To mitigate the effects of a growing whale watching industry, the Sri Lankan coast guard operates patrol tours to observe boat operators in an attempt to ensure that they abide by regulations, and the Department of Wildlife Conservation also implemented a “wildlife fee” in early 2019 (though it’s not entirely clear how the proceeds are used).

Unfortunately, ethical whale watching in Sri Lanka is not always easy to come by and it’s unclear how many operators actually abide by whale watching best practices such as slowing down to less than 7 knots when within 400 metres of the nearest whale, keeping clear of the whales’ path, and not approaching from the front or from behind. For more information on approaching guidelines see here and here .

The good news is there are a number of ethical whale watching tours in Sri Lanka. Keep reading for my experience aboard Sail Lanka’s 7 hour whale watching and sailing tour .

Whale watching and sailing with Sail Lanka

Sail Lanka luxury catamaran in Sri Lanka

I’ve always wanted to go whale watching in Sri Lanka, but the long sailing times and horror stories about extreme sea sickness and whale harassment kept putting me off; being cooped up and stuck on a boat with 40 other people was the very last thing I wanted to do.

So I looked into alternatives, and saw that Sail Lanka operated small-group day cruises on their luxury catamarans for dolphin and whale watching from Mirissa from November to April. Small group? Yes. Luxury catamaran? Oh yeah. A day out on the water with time for swimming and sunbathing? Heck yes. Here’s what you can expect!

Sail Lanka luxury catamaran in Sri Lanka

I e-mailed Sail Lanka a few weeks in advance and booked my boyfriend and myself onto the tour. We hopped aboard bright and early in Mirissa, and once the wildlife fees were all paid up and the safety briefing was completed, we set sail towards the deep sea for the opportunity to spot whales in the wild. Captain Sami and his crew were extremely professional, and prepared a hearty breakfast and lunch for the group – only about a dozen guests including myself and my boyfriend.

The beautiful catamaran was well maintained and featured a covered seating area, trampoline netting at the front and an upper viewing deck – plenty of space for the group to roam around and have our own little areas. Take a look at some of these other whale watching boats and tell me which you’d rather to be on!

Whale watching boats in Mirissa Sri Lanka

Though the Indian Ocean can be temperamental and choppy, it didn’t seem to matter much as we spotted our a pod of frolicking dolphins within the first few minutes at sea (I’m sure the dramamine helped as well).

We continued sailing for another 45 minutes or so and found ourselves cruising along 2 other whale watching boats: someone had spotted a blue whale and it was due to surface again soon.

Then way out along the horizon we spotted water spraying and maybe just a little bump emerge from the ocean…but with the waves and choppy water it honestly didn’t look like much more than a blurry speck on the horizon. Until we got just a tad closer and once again a little sliver of dark grey slid above the water with another big spray – blink and you might just miss it. The blue whale surfaced another few times for what felt like milliseconds before it disappeared altogether and signaled that it was time for us to return to shore.

If you’re expecting whales jumping and spinning in the air, you might be in for a bit of a letdown. But if you are yearning for a glorious glimpse of some of the most majestic marine mammals in the world then you’re in for a real treat, because those few seconds of watching that blue whale in its natural habitat was extraordinary and I won’t soon forget that privilege.

While I am no expert, our boat did keep a greater distance away from the blue whale (I used a 24-105 mm lens and the whale was still too far away for a very clear shot) and did not charge towards it like the other boats, and we were able to do a lot of sailing on the way back with the engines switched off.

It should also go without saying that the whale watching tour with Sail Lanka involves no feeding and no swimming with the whales (which is 100% illegal per Sri Lanka whale and dolphin watching regulations – if your Sri Lanka whale watching tour offers this, it is not an ethical tour!).

Sail Lanka luxury catamaran in Sri Lanka

Unlike most boats which turn around and head right back to the fisheries port, the 7-hour Sail Lanka cruise takes you off the coast and drops its anchor for lunch and a swim. Bring your swimsuit and jump right into the ocean for a satisfying cool-off, or try your hand at SUPing (spoiler: it’s harder than it looks). Don’t feel like swimming? Perch up on the trampoline netting and grab yourself an ice cold beer, but make sure you lather on the sunscreen so you don’t get an extreme sun burn like I did!

Luxury cruise aboard Sail Lanka in south Sri Lanka

If you’re looking for a relaxing sailing experience and fun day out of then I highly recommend checking out Sail Lanka. Here’s the nitty gritty:

  • The 7 hour morning whale watching cruise starts at 6:30 AM and finishes at 1:30 PM
  • They don’t always operate shared cruises as there are minimum number of participants required, so it’s best to get in touch early at [email protected]
  • The best time of year to go whale watching in south Sri Lanka is during the peak tourism season, when the weather is milder and the sea is calmer. The Mirissa whale watching cruises only take place from November to April – in the other season Sail Lanka runs cruises in Passikudah on the east coast
  • Transportation to and from the Mirissa Fisheries Harbour is not included
  • The cruise includes breakfast and lunch. Drinks cost extra but you can also BYO for a fee
  • The cost of the 7-hour whale watching tour is US$100 per person, and there is a wildlife fee of US$18 per adult
  • Tips are not compulsory but appreciated
Editor’s note: If you only want to go on a responsible whale watching tour in Sri Lanka and do not want an extended sailing cruise then look into Raja and the Whales – this family-run company is highly recommended for ethical whale watching tours and adheres to international whale watching regulations.

Breakfast aboard Sail Lanka in south Sri Lanka

Short on time and only have 1 week in Sri Lanka and/or not interested in whale watching? Sail Lanka also operates 3 and 4-hour sailing cruises in the afternoon which includes water activities such as snorkeling and SUPing. However, these don’t run daily and require a minimum number of participants so it’s best to e-mail in advance to check availability.

Where to stay in south Sri Lanka

Visiting south Sri Lanka? Personally, I would recommend staying in Talalla, Hiriketiya or at Cape Weligama. Each of these are within a 1 hour to 90 minute drive away from Mirissa (where the whale watching tours depart from), and are a little less hectic than the hustle and bustle of Mirissa and Weligama towns. Here are some favorites in the area:

Talalla Retreat , the perfect beachfront place for surf and yoga offering both open-air and air-conditioned rooms.

Villa Talay (former Zephyr Talalla) , a boutique beachfront villa with spacious rooms and a private pool.

Sam & Lola’s (my property) located steps away from Hiriketiya Beach, offering two private villas each with their own private plunge pool.

Cape Weligama , one of Sri Lanka’s best luxury hotels – perfect for honeymoons or special occasions. Read my review of Cape Weligama here.

Floats our boat: sailing Sri Lanka’s south coast

Not many people think of Sri Lanka as a sailing destination but that is now changing thanks to an initiative set up after the 2004 tsunami

A fter blazing down all day, the sun slips behind a bank of clouds in the west. As we make for a bay just beyond Dondra Head, the lighthouse on this most southerly point of the country grows slowly larger against a golden sky. It’s a laid-back moment on the sundeck of the Crystal, literally: most of us are pretty much horizontal in the relative cool of the evening.

But then this is the most laid-back of holidays: a week’s gentle pootle around the south coast of Sri Lanka, taking in palm-fringed beaches and the odd nature reserve or Unesco site but mostly reading, daydreaming and just ... being.

When it comes to sailing holidays, most people think of Greece, Croatia or Turkey, perhaps the Caribbean in winter. But Sri Lanka, with some of the world’s most stunning beaches, lapped by warm Indian Ocean, is not a well-known sailing destination. So when I saw G Adventures had a new seven-day small-group tour sailing the south coast (between November and April; it switches to the east coast for June-October), I recruited my sun- and sea-loving daughter Laura to help me give it a go.

The growth of sailing holidays in Sri Lanka dates from the terrible tsunami of 2004. In its aftermath, to provide work and prospects for local youth, Belgian diplomat Pierre Pringiers helped set up the Building a Future Foundation with a college teaching everything about sailing, from boatbuilding and sailmaking to navigation and mechanics. “Boys with no home were housed and trained for free,” skipper Anura tells me. “It’s a good opportunity.” Our cheery young first mate, Dilusha, came through this route. “Two more years and he can be a captain, too.” Now G Adventures is working with Sail Lanka , a startup aided by the foundation.

Swimming off the ‘cat’ in warm seas.

G Adventures itself began as a gap-year company, and the emphasis is still on adventure travel priced for a youngish clientele. But when we pile out of a tuk-tuk at Mirissa harbour, a three-hour train ride from Colombo, to see Crystal bobbing by the jetty, it’s clear we aren’t going to be roughing it. The four cabins, two in each of the catamaran’s hulls, are small – lobbies double as wetroom and loo – but have a big comfy bed, pop-up skylights and (occasional) aircon. Electricity comes thanks partly to a solar panel on deck.

The advantages of having Crystal as our base are obvious on our first morning’s whale-watching trip: instead of getting up early to crowd on to a tour boat, we’re sailing to the feeding grounds by 7.30 am, breakfasting along the way. We’re soon joined by a pod of dolphins that play in our bow wave, plunging under the boat and reappearing for, it seems, the fun of it.

“Nothing between here and Antarctica,” says our guide “Nana” (full name Upul Nanayakkara), pointing out our position on the navigation screen. We’re out of sight of land and I am suddenly aware of our smallness. The British may be an island race but, what with the Channel tunnel and budget flights, few of us ever voyage across or think much about the wateriness of our “Blue” planet.

Whale watching off Mirissa

Almost on cue the cry goes up: “Whale!” On our port bow a broad back breaches the water in a powerful arc, then again and again, before diving with an impressive flick of its tail flukes. It looks dark grey but this is a blue whale, the largest animal ever, dwarfing our boat with its 25-metre length. The whale surfaces several more times before we turn back – as packed two-storey excursion boats start arriving.

We’re soon as fond of Crystal as the crew. Who needs a hotel pool? Arriving back sweaty after a tour of Galle Fort, we leap off her deck for a pre-dinner swim. For action there’s a kayak and stand-up paddleboards on deck, fins and snorkels in the aft lockers. Most of us take a turn at the helm and can help hauling sails – though I suspect we mostly get in the way.

Laura at Crystal’s helm

And there’s no wondering where to eat. Chef Indonil, who has worked on ships the world over, produces three varied meals a day, for which we gather eagerly as soon as – often before – the gong sounds. We have Sri Lankan curries one night, south Indian dosas another, but Indonil enjoys a challenge and takes requests. “Mexican!” cries Steph from Brisbane. Excellent fish tacos appear the next day. “Spaghetti bolognese,” says Nana. He’s shouted down.

On our second morning I’m gazing at dozens of elegantly striped cuttlefish hanging in the clear water when the gong goes. It’s Sri Lankan new year and a celebration breakfast of new-harvest rice cooked in milk, date and onion chutney, cake and fruits is followed by a raucous game of pin the eye on the elephant.

Liz and Laura take a kayak to the beach

Over the week we snorkel on Kalpitiya reef, spot green bee-eaters, sea eagles and peacocks at Kalametiya bird sanctuary, and kick back on spectacular beaches such as Kudawella, which has two crescents of perfect sand either side of a rocky presqu’île. But the most memorable moments are on or around Crystal herself: taking out an SUP in a deserted bay at sunset; watching bats feed on the insects circling the boat’s lights; and a last-night barbecue on a remote beach.

From its cultural triangle to its national parks, Sri Lanka has sights and marvels aplenty, and most of us also plan to “do” some of these as part of our trip, but before or after such exertions, a stay on Crystal offers what many holidaymakers crave – a chance to just “be”.

Whale watching in Sri Lanka by luxury catamaran

Luxury whale watching Sri Lanka - overnight catamaran from Mirissa with Sail Lanka

Whale watching in Sri Lanka is something you shouldn’t miss on your trip to the ‘Teardrop Island’. Most visitors opt for one of the crowded early morning tourist boats chugging out of Mirissa, and if you’re on a tight schedule or budget then this is certainly a worthwhile option. It won’t be particularly comfy, and there will be elbow wars as you battle with fellow passengers to secure the perfect vantage spot for photographs. But the chances are you will see your whale.

After all, that’s what you’re there for.

Luxury whale watching Sri Lanka - overnight catamaran from Mirissa with Sail Lanka

Yet there is a better way…whale watching in Sri Lanka by luxury overnight catamaran!

Luxury whale watching in Sri Lanka by catamaran

Preferring exclusivity and luxury to crowds and plastic seats, we opted for an  overnight catamaran cruise  with Sail Lanka, a socially responsible and well established yacht charter company that runs sailing cruises and day trips all around the coast of Sri Lanka. Taking an overnight tour would also give us a head start on the whales in the morning. We’d already be out at sea, so there would be no need for ridiculously early starts from a shore based hotel.

I like my sleep!

Luxury whale watching Sri Lanka - overnight catamaran from Mirissa with Sail Lanka

The overnight whale watching cruise

We were in Sri Lanka in March, so went whale watching from Mirissa on the south coast as blue whale sightings are common here between November and April. The tour began at 3.30 p.m. with a short briefing and introduction to the crew of 3 – the captain, chef and deck hand. Although the catamaran can accommodate 8 guests, there was only 1 other couple on board, so it was almost our own private catamaran!

I’m always a little wary of spending time with strangers in such confined quarters, but the crew were all so friendly and professional, and the other couple were on the same wavelength as us, so it wasn’t a problem at all. The catamaran was big enough to be able to find our own private spaces, and to be honest, most of the time it felt like we were the only ones there!

Clutching our cool welcome drinks and trying to find our sea legs, we set sail from Mirissa at 4 p.m. and cruised along the coast towards Weligama Bay. Hubbie and I found the perfect sun lounger spot up on the bow deck to languidly watch the palm trees and fishing boats fly past.

Finally we felt like we were on holiday!

The Catamaran

As we began motoring out to sea, Hubbie and I slipped off our shoes and went to check out our home for the night. The first thing I noticed was that it was pristine! I’m not sure if it was a fairly new boat, but it was like we were the first ones to use it. There was a communal covered dining area at the stern, and a large cargo net hammock at the bow for lounging on in the sun. Two places where we spent most of our time whilst whale watching in Sri Lanka!

The 4 ensuite guest cabins were down inside the twin hulls, one at each end. We arrived a bit early so had first choice which was great because they are not all the same size. We opted for a cabin at the stern as it was slightly larger than the one at the bow.

The cabins are tiny, but what luxury to have our own private bedroom and bathroom on a boat!

There’s understandably very limited room inside the cabins, and only space for one person to stand up or get changed in at a time. We wished we didn’t have our massive kit bags with us as it was a bit of a chore trying to find stuff in the confined space. If you can, just take a small overnight bag with on on board. The attached wet room had a toilet, sink and shower, and a porthole so you could watch the catamaran’s progress whilst washing. Compact but functional.

Thankfully we didn’t plan on spending much time in the cabin, and quickly scampered back up on deck to admire the view. A short while later the catamaran stopped in Weligama Bay and whilst the crew cooked supper we jumped off the swimming platform at the back into the deliciously warm water for a spot of swimming.

The Evening in Weligama Bay

The catamaran was anchored just off ‘Snake Island’, which provided shelter from any waves that came rolling in. The island is so-called because Buddhist monks used to release venomous snakes there years ago (rather than killing them) to stop them biting people. No-one really knows if there are still snakes there today, but we weren’t about to find out.

The water was quite choppy but very warm with a much higher salt content than we’re used to. We all larked about and discovered yet another advantage of a catamaran. You can swim beneath the boat in between the two hulls, not something you can do with a normal yacht!

As the light faded and the friendly twinkling lights of Weligama danced along the water, we clambered back up the ladder for quick showers before dinner. Now that was an interesting experience, the shower. I washed really fast, worried that someone would peer in through the skylight which was directly on deck where people walked. As a result it didn’t feel that private, but of course I was worrying about nothing. When you’re up on deck you really don’t even notice the skylights, and it’s so bright outside that you can’t see through the reflective windows anyway.

I did however forget to move the toilet paper out of the way of the shower. BIG mistake.

Emerging from the cabin we found a delicious seafood dinner of fried fish and fresh vegetables waiting for us. Tropical tunes were playing from one of the beach bars, adding to the warm evening vibe.

The food was simple but tasty, followed by fruit cocktail and beers to while away the evening. The communal dining wasn’t so bad, as we chatted to our fellow passengers and were pleased to discover they were even more obsessed with instagram than us!

When darkness had well and truly descended, Hubbie and I slipped away to lay on the cargo net hammocks for a spot of star gazing. It was still warm even at 11 p.m. so we put off climbing down to our hot cabin for as long as possible. We were rewarded with 2 shooting stars! Result.

The Overnight

Okay so it was never going to be the best night’s sleep. Inside our little cabin it was incredibly stuffy despite a small fan and all our portholes being open. The catamaran rocked quite a bit during the night, so we didn’t get much sleep. Hubbie was also a little tall for the bed, something to bear in mind if you’re over 6 foot. Still, sleeping is for wimps. So when the engines started early next morning indicating we were heading out to sea, it wasn’t difficult to rise early and escape the sweat box, and start what we were all there for. Whale watching.

The Whale Watching

Breakfast was served up on deck, and we sat smugly tucking into our bacon,  eggs, and Ceylon tea as several standard whale watching boats headed out of the bay to join our search. The occupants will have been up at the crack of dawn to catch the boats whilst we were still slumbering peacefully. Or at least trying to. We definitely felt we’d made the right choice of vessel!

Our little fleet made a bee-line for a calm area where whales are often spotted, and sure enough, there they were!

We all scampered to the bow and tried to be the first ones to spot the water spout from the blow holes. As soon as one was sighted, all the boats manoeuvred in unison and headed to the site. Some of the other boats did seem to venture a little too close to the whales, often listing slightly as all the passengers rushed to one side for photos. I was glad we weren’t on one of those.

A semi private luxury catamaran charter is the way to go!

In all, we saw 4 blue whales. It may have been the same whale on 4 separate occasions but it still counts as 4, right? So pleased! We’ve seen whales in the Galapagos, but not as close and as predictable as this. Our whale watching in Sri Lanka was just perfect.

After the excitement of the whales we returned to our breakfast as the catamaran headed back to anchor in a sheltered spot in Mirissa Bay beneath a lighthouse. It was already hot so we went for a swim, taking snorkels with us, but the visibility was pretty poor so we only saw a couple of fish. Giving up on that, Hubbie had his first attempt at stand up paddle boarding. I would have been up for a go too, until I gave up counting the number of times he fell off. It’s a lot harder than it looks, although to be fair the sea wasn’t exactly a millpond that morning!

Lunch was served as we dried off in the sun, a veritable feast of Sri Lankan favourites and some of the best food we had during our trip!

Appetites appeased, we arrived back at Mirissa harbour at 1.30 p.m. and there the tour ended. Just a little under 24 hours but we’d had such an fun experience that it felt much longer. Probably our favourite experience in Sri Lanka!

Top Tips for whale watching in Sri Lanka by luxury catamaran:

Cost: $350 per couple/cabin (excludes soft drinks and alcohol) – price correct at March 2017.

Best time to go : on the south coast (i.e. Mirissa where we were), November – April is best. On the east coast, April – October is best.

What to take: pack light and just take an overnight bag if you can. You won’t need much more than swim/beach wear and sun cream. Don’t forget a beach towel as these are not provided (you do get 1 shower towel each). Bring flip flops as the deck does get too hot to walk on at times. There is soap in the cabin bathrooms but no other toiletries.

Life jackets: these are available for all guests, but only mandatory to wear whilst up close to the whales.

Tipping: there is a tip box which is handed around at the end of the tour, so don’t forget some cash.
