Ausmaid yacht a 'write-off'.

The 14-metre yacht that overturned in huge seas off Double Island Point is now washed up on the Noosa North Shore.

The 14-metre yacht that overturned in huge seas off Double Island Point has been declared “pretty much a write off”.

Ausmaid, which has twice won handicap honours in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, suffered extensive damage in yesterday’s wild weather.

Noosa Coastguard’s Robin Hood said the yacht’s keel, rudder and mast were damaged and said there was also a large crack in the hull.

Mr Hood said the boat’s owner Bruce Absolon was “gutted”.

“The Ausmaid is still listed as a starter for the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race but they’ll have to change that,” Mr Hood said.

The yacht is still beached at Noosa’s North Shore after a Noosa Coastguard crew was unable to get the vessel off the sand.

The skipper was flung from the yacht when it overturned and had to be winched from the damaged vessel by the AGL Action Rescue helicopter.

He was taken to Nambour Hospital with suspected back injuries and released later yesterday afternoon.

The other two crew members were forced to perch on the vessel for more than two hours as rescue crews struggled to reach them in the six-metre swell.

Today, the dual Sydney to Hobart handicap winner Ausmaid lay wrecked on the southeast Queensland coast after back-to-back bouts with the elements.

She survived the first with some wounds, but the second delivered the coup de grace.

"The keel's been torn off, the rudder's been torn off, the sail drive has hit the sand as it's come through, it's ripped the motor out of its mountings and there are several large holes in its hull,'' Ausmaid's devastated owner Bruce Absolon said today.

The drama began yesterday morning when Ausmaid was dismasted after being hit by a massive wave about eight nautical miles northeast of Noosa Heads.

Huge seas whipped up by gale strength winds rolled the yacht, which resurfaced without its skipper who was saved by his safety harness.

A chopper was called to rescue the skipper, who suffered suspected back injuries, but two other crew had to remain aboard until the weather abated long enough for them to be winched to safety.

A coast guard boat was sent to retrieve the yacht and officers managed to get a line aboard.

They anchored Ausmaid against the wild weather battering the Sunshine Coast in Laguna Bay, off Noosa, but worse was to come.

Conditions intensified again overnight, sweeping her to shore.

Mr Absolon said the large anchor supplied by Noosa Coast Guard was still attached to the yacht but was "sheered like a pretzel''.

Mr Absolon, his voice breaking, said the vessel was insured but he was devastated by the loss.

"The boat's irreplaceable, not only from the financial point of view but also the history of the boat. It's got a huge racing history,'' he said.

"It's weathered incredibly bad weather, but what caused the accident was extremely freak rogue waves.''

Mr Absolon said the crew deserved the highest praise for their seamanship when the bad weather hit yesterday.

Ausmaid won the Sydney to Hobart on handicap in 1996 and 2000.

She was sailing to Brisbane for the start of the Brisbane to Gladstone race, which begins on Good Friday.

Mr Absolon said he was overwhelmed by the support he'd received.

He said ocean racing was in his blood and he would return to the pursuit after a period of reflection.

Man overboard at Rolex Trophy

During today's Rolex Trophy Rating Series race two Farr 47 Ausmaid suffered MOB 15/12/06

Crews hoping to use the Rolex Trophy Rating Series as a shakedown for the Rolex Sydney Hobart were today buffeted by atrocious conditions off Sydney Heads with one competing boat called on to test their Man Overboard recovery skills.

Trevor Taylor’s Western Australian Farr 47 Ausmaid, the most travelled interstate boat contesting the regatta and the Rolex Sydney Hobart, today lost a crewman over the side near the finish of race one.

While bowman Aaron Linham, 39, was fixing a broken topping lift on the spinnaker pole, a rope wrapped around his ankle and when the spinnaker filled, Linham was dragged into the water.

While not in immediate danger, Linham had to tread water for a few minutes in lumpy seas while the crew on Ausmaid dropped the spinnaker and doubled back to pick him up, four crewmembers hauling the lucky but soggy sailor back on deck.

“The crew executed a very good recovery,” said Linham, who spent the trip back to the CYCA marina with his ankle iced.

As the incident happened just 300 metres from the finish, amazingly Ausmaid sailed through the finish line to record a result however, they withdrew from race two not because of the MOB but due to a rope wrapped around their propeller.

“Aaron seemed to think that we should finish the race,” said a relieved skipper Trevor Taylor. While obviously not a planned manoeuvre, Taylor and his crew appreciated the opportunity to practice a Man Overboard recovery while under spinnaker. We hadn’t practiced a MOB with the kite up. Now all the boys know how to do it,” said Taylor.

Ausmaid will be back in the starting line up tomorrow. “I’m going to hang on this time,” said Linham.

In a good test for the 628 nautical mile starting on 26 December, the fleet racing offshore in the four day lead up regatta faced heavy rain, fresh southerlies of 25 knots plus and up to 2.5 metre swells off Sydney Heads.

Despite blowing their heavy weather kite on the first downwind run, Ray Roberts’ Quantum Racing still managed to out class its canting keel counterparts Wild Joe and Wild Oats XI to record a third consecutive handicap win. With only lighter air spinnakers left in the sail wardrobe, Roberts and his crew decided to call it a day after the first race.

Geoff Ross’ Yendys continued its unbroken string of wins with another top result in IRC Division 1, relegating Stephen Ainsworth’s Loki to second and Michael Hiatt’s Living Doll to third.

In IRC Division 2 Chris Dare’s Flirt also continued its winning form in race one today finishing first ahead of Stephen EIlis’ Splash Gordon and Syd Fischer’s Ragamuffin.

Ausmaid wasn’t the only Western Australian boat to struggle in today’s wild conditions. Philip Child’s Knee Deep Wines was knee deep in it when they Chinese gybed on the first downhill run in race one. Immediately after this incident the crew on Knee Deep Wines packed up the boat and headed back to the marina.

Ausmaid owner 'gutted' by damage

A multi-million dollar yacht that was disabled off south-east Queensland yesterday was due to race next Friday.

Past Sydney to Hobart winner Ausmaid was damaged in big seas off the Sunshine Coast yesterday.

The yacht was towed to Noosa but the anchor broke and it washed up on a beach this morning.

It was due to race in the Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race next week.

Coastguard commander Robin Hood says the owner is heartbroken it cannot be saved.

"Without using too bad terminology - gutted - he's absolutely devastated," he said.

"To build a yacht like that or to build any vessel I suppose is a love affair and it's just gone."
