We wanted a unique all in one ceremony and reception, we were exploring downtown when we came across yacht starship we looked at each other and thought “how cool would it be to get married on the water”. From the moment we contacted the boat for a meeting it was a amazing experience. We first met with Chris D to talk about the details, guest count, date and our vision once that was in place and contract was signed 3 month out we were contacted by Joey O (our day of coordinator). We scheduled an in person meeting to walk through the yacht and decide seating arrangements and table placements and talk time line. Every time I reached out with a question or concern I had an answer right away. Honestly this takes the stress out of wedding planning they were so helpful with everything. We were able to do a rehearsal the day before on our boat as well as bring on any décor that we would need to have set up & Joey made sure it was done and reflected our vision. Our wedding was Friday, June 16th and was flawless. We are still getting compliments on the amazing food and service by the waitstaff. But if you’re thinking of setting sail on open waters for a wedding ceremony, reception, or both, some additional, specific planning is required.

Planning for a wedding on the water not only means working within the restraints of the specific vessel you want, but it also means taking Mother Nature and changing weather conditions into consideration. Here, we consult expert planners to learn tips, tricks, and the most important things to consider before you set sail and tie the knot.

Consider Time, Location, and Weather

Whether you’re choosing to charter a boat, planning a yacht party, or hosting a wedding reception on a cruise ship, time, location, and weather are important factors to consider. “Weather can have a huge impact on a waterfront or boating event and can change the guest experience and comforts quickly,” says Nick and Aleah Valley, owners of Valley & Company Events .

In your planning, be sure to check on where you’ll be leaving from and what the weather may look like that day. “Many coastal areas have zones where gale force winds can appear quickly and unexpectedly. Having a backup plan for wind and chilly temperatures is imperative,” adds the Valleys. “If it's too windy, some boats or yachts can't sail, which could mean your event is docked or canceled completely until conditions improve.”

Boat Options for Getting Married on the Water

Getting married on a boat can come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. Depending on your guest list and wedding vision, one option may be better than the others. Pricing will vary greatly, depending on the size of the boat, the style, and the region where you’re booking. Yacht and charter boat weddings may only require a fee for use of the vessel, while a cruise ship wedding requires paying for the cruise , along with fees specific to your wedding.

Tips for Yacht Weddings

A wedding reception on a yacht provides the ultimate view for a great celebration! You can choose to either host your ceremony elsewhere and then board the boat, or plan for both your ceremony and reception on the water.

To find the ideal yacht for your wedding, think about guest list size first. “Keep in mind that many states have maritime regulations prohibiting the rental of yachts for events or guest counts past a certain number,” says Nick and Aleah Valley. “Contacting the local maritime office is a good place to start for suggestions on how to charter a yacht. They may have recommendations for finding a yacht unless you have your own or have a connection to one.”

Once you know that your guest list count is in line with area regulations for a yacht, it’s crucial to consider space to guest ratio as well. Are there enough restrooms to accommodate your group? Is there enough elbow room to allow for a great guest experience?

You’ll also want to check if the yacht has appropriate kitchen facilities for your culinary team to create the perfect menu for your reception, along with space for other necessary rentals.

Tips for Charter Boat Weddings

If you’re hoping to charter a boat for your wedding, keeping size in mind is crucial here, too. Be sure to choose a boat that can accommodate your guest list and your specific needs. It's also important to double-check that the boat you plan to charter will fit the aesthetic and type of reception you're hoping for.

If you’re chartering a boat, insurance will also be required. “Talk to your insurance carrier about your personal policy and what the needs are to cover the event, the boat owner, and your guests,” says Nick and Aleah Valley.

It’s also important to consider the timing when chartering a boat. “Most charter boats have a very specific timeframe for when they can depart a port or marina, whether it's based on tides, locks, or marina rules, so this can dictate your event timeline,” says Nick and Aleah Valley. They suggest building a buffer into your day-of timeline so guests arrive and board the boat at least 45 minutes before your scheduled departure time. This will give guests time to get settled on the boat, and you can welcome them with happy hour drinks and snacks to kick off the celebration.

Tips for Cruise Weddings

Planning a ceremony or a wedding reception on a cruise ship means you’re on a much bigger boat. Typically, that also means there may be other guests onboard that aren’t part of your wedding. If privacy is important to you, be sure to ask the cruise ship’s planning team what your ceremony or reception space will look like, and what your options are for keeping it private.

Depending on the cruise, you may not be able to get married on open water at all. Legally, you may be required to choose to either celebrate your nuptials before the ship departs, or you can choose to say “I do” at the port of one of the cruise’s destinations. Working with the right planner will ensure you’re following the proper legal guidance for a cruise wedding or cruise wedding reception.

“Keep in mind the guest experience and the logistics of what can take place on a cruise,” suggests Nick and Aleah Valley. It’s important to check if you can have events at your leisure, or if you will have to stick to the cruise ship’s strict timeline and events.

How to Keep Guests Comfortable on the Water

While a boat wedding may be dreamy for you and your partner, especially if you’re used to being on the water, it may be tricky for some of your guests.

“ Seasickness can happen quickly, especially when guests are drinking,” says Nick and Aleah Valley. “Have a solid plan, and if you have an opportunity, pass out seasickness patches to your guests the day before your event so they can be prepared for being on the boat.”

Consider putting together welcome bags that might include bug spray, water bottles, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Another helpful option? Put out a big basket of hats and fans, along with a well-stocked station of snacks and water. It’s important that guests stay hydrated to avoid heat exhaustion.  

Questions to Ask Before Booking a Boat for Your Wedding

• Will there be enough space for our guest list?
• Is there air conditioning on board?
• Is there a maintenance crew that can assist with potential mechanical issues?
• What is the galley kitchen’s capacity for creating a meal?
• Is there a refrigerated place to store our cake? Will it fit?
• Can we incorporate our own décor?
• How many life preservers are on board?
• Is there a specific timeline we need to follow?
• What insurance is required for use?

After ironing these questions out, you'll be ready to sail off into the sunset as a married couple!

One. Consult with a Yacht Charter Agent / Wedding Specialist

With Luxury Yacht Charters, you have it all! Christopher Patrick, our yacht charter agent, will help you find the perfect yacht, destination, and fun itinerary for your wedding charter. You will also consult with our wedding specialist, Karin Patrick.

This consultation will generally take place over the phone or via email, whichever is most convenient for you. Karin will ask you all the right questions and listen to your particular requirements to determine what type of event you are looking for. Christopher and Karin Patrick will work as a team to make sure everything is perfect for you on your very special day…Meet Karin & Christopher

Two. Discuss Yach ts

Based on the initial phone or email conversations, yachts that best suit the bride and groom’s requirements will be selected. Detailed proposals will be put together and sent by email for review. Of course, these will be all-inclusive proposals with no hidden fees or unexplained charges.

Three. Choose Destination & Itinerary

Christopher will discuss with you possible yachting destinations for your wedding charter. Most likely you will have a destination in mind, and this will be thoroughly be discussed. An itinerary will be prepared for you and your wedding party, including activities and water sports such as snorkeling and scuba diving.

Four. Assess the Yachts

We will make sure that all questions are answered on each and every suggested yacht. Also, we will find other possible options for you if needed. In addition, we will discuss the positive and negative aspects of each yacht and crew as it pertains to your particular needs and requirements.

Five. Secure the Yacht of your choice

The contract will be prepared once all questions have been answered and a yacht has been selected. Then, the bride or groom signs the contract with the yacht’s agent. A deposit secures the date and the yacht.

Your wedding specialist will ask you a series of questions about your wedding charter, such as:

• What is the date of your wedding?
• Will you want to have the ceremony on board the yacht?
• What is your preferred destination – the Caribbean, Bahamas, Mediterranean, Florida, or another?
• Are you flexible with your date or is this immovable?
• How many guests are you expecting?
• How many guests will be children and/or infants?
• What type of dinner service do you think you will need – buffet or formal plated?
• Do you want a full open bar? A beer, wine, and soda bar? Or a Non-alcoholic bar?
• Do you need us to book the entertainment? DJ or Live Band?

Luxury Yacht Charter with guests

Wedding package with 10 or fewer guests..

• Day of wedding coordinator during the ceremony for up to 4 hours.
• Yacht wedding charter for 4 hours and up to 10 guests payable directly to the charter company. This includes also 2 servers, champagne toast, a food station with selections of greens, seafood, sushi, and entertainment station. Wedding cake and cake cutting. All other drinks including alcohol will be billed by consumption. Tax and Gratuity for the crew are not included and will be added to your final bill with the charter company.
• Decorated reeling with fresh flower garland and sashes in the color of your choice.
• Professional photo package. 4 hours with unlimited photos and basic and creative editing.

Pricing is estimated for a charter in Southwest Florida (Fort Myers/Cape Coral) for up to 10 people. This 76-foot luxury yacht is beautiful inside and out. You may deduct the catering, cake, and toast.

Paddlewheeler Charter

Anna maria island charter 75 people or less.

Basic private charter for 75 people or fewer are starting at $2000 + tax and includes the crew and all licensing. Catering and beverages as well as reception decoration are not included and may be added.

• Rustic birch arch or bamboo arch with white sheers and fresh flower arrangements.
• Professional photo package. 3 hours with unlimited photos and basic editing only (special due to time we have to be onboard).

Florida Yacht Wedding Package information

Florida yacht charter fees are included in our yacht wedding packages. However, some charter costs will have to be paid directly to the provider. Price differences will apply depending on the size of the yacht, location, and guest count.  For weddings on yachts with over 20 guests please contact a charter company directly since they offer all-inclusive wedding and reception packages.  A Florida yacht wedding is available throughout the State.

Fresh Flowers

The bridal bouquet is estimated with standard and/or economical flowers. Please refer to our Floral Design page to see what is included in the price. Basic rose colors are white, red, hot pink, orange, yellow, light pink. All other colors like peach, salmon, lavender, creme, etc. will have a surcharge.  All silk flower decorations can be exchanged with fresh flower decorations at an additional cost.  Wedding cakes are estimated with basic fillings and are decorated with fresh flowers or white chocolate seashells and nautical themes. Custom cakes are available upon request. Beverages and catering may be added including full receptions for larger weddings.

Marriage Certificate & Shipping

Certified copies of the marriage certificate will be shipped via USPS for clients within the US. USPS shipments are included in the package price. For customers from overseas, Fed Ex International shipping charges will apply and are not included in the package price. We won’t ship documents to International destinations with regular mail because paperwork cannot be tracked.

Optional services within the package

If you are celebrating a vow renewal, commitment ceremony, or other celebration of love we will deduct $110 for the license that you will not need.

You may deduct food or drinks included in the wedding package.

Officiant service and photography are optional for weddings with 20 or more guests or marriage proposals.

Additional Services

Yacht wedding packages can be custom designed to fit your wishes and needs. Overnight accommodations on board are available for smaller weddings. For full event catering or romantic candlelight dinners please contact us.

• You may upgrade the professional photo package with additional photo time.
• Add catering, platters (fruit, sandwich), cakes,  alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages.
• Professional Hair and Makeup Service that comes to your location.
• Videographer.
• Wedding transport for the bride and groom and guests.
