YACHTING HISTORY. Why We Love The Award-Winning Sailing Yacht Vertigo

vertigo sailing yacht

220ft Vertigo was launched in February 2011. Designed by Philippe Briand and built by Alloy Yachts in New Zealand. She has modern hull lines and is the first yacht of this size to have an almost vertical bow, allowing for greater water displacement and a considerable increase in speed. She is both fast and sensitive to sail.

As the yacht is very big, ketch rig was the only suitable option. Mainsail and mizzen sail include roaches that have never before been seen or used on yachts of this size. More surface area of the sails is exposed up high where the wind velocity is greater than it is at the proximity of the water.

Renowned interior designer Christian Liaigre who has created an extremely comfortable, light, and spacious atmosphere designed these accommodations. On the main deck is the saloon and cockpit, housed by transparent sides to allow maximum natural light. The lower deck houses four cabins and the vast owner’s suite which leads directly to the lazarette and swim platform.

Vertigo’s   interior layout sleeps up to 12 guests in 5 staterooms, including a master suite, 4 double cabins, and 1 convertible cabin4 pullman beds. She is also capable of carrying up to 11 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Philippe Briand discusses sailing yacht Vertigo

When he has a project in progress, designer Philippe Briand is a compulsive sketcher, capturing and developing ideas in his notebook – or on whatever surfaces come to hand.

With inspiration running hot during the 67.2m Vertigo project, for instance, Briand feverishly drew sketch after sketch on the tablecloths of an Italian trattoria. Eventually the restaurateur had to plead with him to stop before the supply of tablecloths ran out.

Just launched in Auckland from Alloy Yachts, Vertigo is a striking yacht by any definition. At 67.2m and 700 tonnes, Vertigo is a powerful sailing machine, with sailing speeds predicted to reach about 20 knots.

Carrying towering twin masts of nearly equal height, the yacht presents a distinctive profile. From the near-vertical bow, the deckline displays subtle sheer in a long clean sweep to the retroussé transom. Arcing across the space between the two masts, the coachroof is like a piece of modern sculpture. It appears to hover over the deck – barely supported by the delicate mullions and wide expanse of glass beneath.

In terms of size and complexity, Vertigo is the largest completed project for both the yard and designer. Briand’s sketching tracked veritable odysseys across landscapes of paper in his drive to solve its myriad conundrums.

‘I tend to cover the walls and floors of my office and my study with drawings and even my dog knows that he cannot disturb the scenery,’ he says. ‘These creative episodes are what drive me and make me love what I do.’

Was this your largest sailing design to date?

To date Vertigo is our largest yacht to be launched. The design commenced in December 2004 and was completed in 2007. Since then, we have developed designs for larger yachts as well. Recent projects include a 72m and last year we developed a design for a 150m.

What was the original design brief for Vertigo , and what changed?

The first goal was to provide a very comfortable vessel to take her owner and family around the world in total safety. From the outset, the brief was to design a 60m yacht. His former yacht had a very comfortable saloon on the main deck and an extensive flybridge; it was these areas we focused on and improved.

Further into the design process, the owner added a mid lazarette and wanted to improve performance yet more. In particular she needed not simply to handle adverse weather fronts, but also the power to outrun them. Thus the length evolved to 67m. As we had gone this far we thought, ‘Why not add another 30cm to make her the fifth longest sailing yacht in the world?’

What were the significant features that the owner wanted?

The owner chose our design because he wanted a yacht that would still be contemporary and cutting edge 10 years from now. He was aware of our reputation for building outstanding performance yachts and we have worked hard to exceed his expectations; the design is unique and although she is not designed as a racing machine, her performance will soon be proven.

One of Vertigo ’s significant features is the spacious flybridge, which offers increased privacy and maximises views. For the interiors, we worked with the specialised yachting team from Christian Liaigre to create layouts that would not hinder performance and would guarantee a superior lifestyle. The interior is very comfortable and no concessions were made – she is an incredibly luxurious yacht. Her main purpose will be a travelling, permanent residence over the next two years.

However she is a yacht and the owner and his family wanted easy access to the water. Amidships, the hull sides fold down on both sides to create two spacious platforms just above the water, like beaches. With the hull completely open from side to side, this area also houses the gymnasium. Even I would be tempted to take up exercise under these conditions!

In both naval architecture and internal space planning, what were the particular challenges you faced in answering the owner’s brief?

There are many challenges connected to her size and we had to take into account constraints such as the Suez Canal and the depth of marinas. To create a performance yacht, I needed sail surface and an efficient keel. The height to go through the Suez Canal is limited to 67m and a draught of 5.25m is really the maximum for most marinas.

One cannot propel 700 tonnes within those constraints using traditional solutions, so we were forced to find alternatives. We decided to go for a flat-top mainsail with considerable roach, which meant the main mast was to be held by runners only. To handle the sailplan, we came to the conclusion that we would need 16 captive winches. The challenge was to keep the winches from view.

Bearing in mind each one is the size of a car engine, this was not an easy task! Suddenly, the yacht was getting too small.

We also had to take into account the strict MCA SOLAS regulations, observing the same weight rules that apply to a motor yacht, which require fireproof bulkheads over 300mm thick and which insist the lazarette doors open 60cm above sea level.

The process was long and tedious, but we managed to find appropriate solutions one by one. Through very open and systematic changes managed and implemented expertly by the meticulous project manager and the study office at Alloy, we optimised the yacht centimetre by centimetre. The impressive end result is that we have a yacht in the water that is 97 per cent consistent with the original concept drawings.

Your background in sailing yachts has been very much linked with sailing performance. Was that a major consideration?

Is there any more exciting feeling than to be at the wheel of a yacht and feel the acceleration? That feeling is compounded when even in light wind, the yacht picks up speed and you can steer her with one hand on the wheel. This feeling is what we stand for and this is our ultimate goal when designing a sailing yacht.

For me the sensitivity of the yacht is the core of my work. It is more important than speed. I have helmed my racing designs for over 15 years. I have ‘listened’ to each yacht and I tried to improve them each time around. In the process, I have accrued the appropriate skills and knowledge to balance the different criteria that determine the behaviour of a yacht.

The criteria are not, as one may think, solely geared towards weight saving but include many areas such as reduced wetted surface area, the sailplan, a well designed keel, the optimised surface of the appendages and many other details that all combined will have an impact on the behaviour of the yacht.

In every single project, I apply these ingredients and this was the case with Vertigo . Even on a boat this size, this often came down to working in centimetres…

In terms of performance, describe your design process. Do you use primarily computer modelling, or tank work or a combination of the two? How reliable is computer modelling at this scale?

Tank testing requires big models and to be accurate they have to be built to a minimum 1/8th scale. In the case of Vertigo , we didn’t consider tank testing to be efficient because it would have implied building a model weighing over 1.5 tonnes and would have added six months to the project.

Over the years hydrodynamic scientific research and development has evolved to become much more precise and reliable. We are now able to create a mesh with 8 million cells covering the hull drawing. The precision of the resistance calculations has a deviation of less than 2 per cent, compared with the result of tank testing.

Using our state-of-the-art software applications, we developed a ‘mother’ hull which was constantly refined as the interior was developed, as the accommodation became more precise and as the stability of the shape and the estimated centre of gravity were defined. The hull that was built is actually version 37 of the ‘mother’ hull.

Did you make any interesting discoveries during this process that came as a result of the boat’s size?

For a project of this magnitude, we need to know and understand everything before it exists. All modifications have a major impact and ripple effect on the rest of the project. The initial phase not only has to cover the detailed design of the geometry of the yacht, but at that point we also need to predict the behaviour of the yacht under variable wind and sea-going conditions. We even developed a detailed ‘performance envelope’ study of Vertigo , as one does for airplanes, before the first piece of aluminium was cut.

To give you an idea of the depth of this study, we developed a prediction for every possible true wind speed and for every true wind angle and the most appropriate sail set. From that we calculated the speed of the yacht, the heel and the loads. This report has been of great assistance to Alloy Yachts, North Sails and Southern Spars and has helped to improve the accuracy of the engineering. In effect, I was already sailing a ‘virtual’ Vertigo four years ago.

In terms of aesthetics, you are associated with one of the most beautiful modern superyachts ever built, namely Mari Cha III . How did you approach the external styling of Vertigo ?

With Vertigo , I concentrated a lot of effort on the creation of the superstucture. I started out by drawing bridges and arches running from the main mast to the mizzen mast. Once I had decided on the concept drawing, I started working on the proportions.

As you will see on Vertigo , given the constraint of the lazarette openings, I have paid special attention to the relative height of the topsides and the superstructure. I wanted the superstucture to float.

The windows are an intricate part of the design; they have very precise rounded sections and add huge aesthetic value. From the interior, the space is open to the exterior allowing an enormous amount of natural light to stream in.

Other details such as the handrails, the angles of the roof, the fine supports for the hard top, required flawless execution of the design by the shipyard. Alloy Yachts have been meticulous in turning the designs into beautiful structures.

Yachts of this size and complexity obviously demand hugely sophisticated systems. Can you describe how you worked with Alloy Yachts to resolve systems and engineering issues?

Alloy Yachts is a competent shipyard. After the design phase, it carried out the majority of the studies. They have extensive experience in building large yachts and were in control of the equipment needed for such a yacht. As a yard, they are well suited and comfortable with projects of this size.

To give you an example, the captive winches were an issue at the beginning. As a solution, the yard developed the largest captive winches to carry the loadings on Vertigo . Their loading can go up to 41 tonnes. The runners are also a world first. Whilst tacking, one runner needs to be eased whilst the other one needs to be trimmed automatically. This manoeuvre needs to be carefully controlled. The roach of the mainsail sits in between the two runners, so the manoeuvring needs to be very harmonious and precise.

What about the loads that this yacht will sustain under sail?

The extreme mast compression at the foot of the main mast has been estimated at 387 tonnes. This is the weight of a high speed locomotive! The V1 can sustain loads of 163 tonnes. In sailing conditions, we could expect 65 tonnes on the forestay and the working load on the sheet of the blade can exceed 30 tonnes. This is quite impressive, but this is what it takes to move 700 tonnes at 15 to 20 knots, using only energy provided by the wind.

What about the underwater configuration?

The limited draught of 5.25m is not compatible with an efficient design of the underwater lateral plan. The efficiency of a lateral plan is related to its ability to create lift and that is related to its aspect ratio. Indeed, the draught restriction does not give us the required aspect ratio, so we required a daggerboard, which extends the draught to 9 metres.

As the lateral plan of the daggerboard has the largest aspect ratio of all the appendages, we chose to increase its contribution to general lift by oversizing its area. In addition, we increased the efficiency of the other ‘available’ appendages. The rudder has a high aspect ratio. The keel, which has the ballast inside, is not designed with a bulb but more as a foil over it’s entire span.

How large was the design team for this project?

The design team evolved very smoothly. At first, just three were involved: the owner, project leader Andrew Senn and myself. I organised a dedicated team of five engineers on my side.

Soon thereafter, my friend Christian Liaigre was appointed for the interior and we all worked together from that point.

I think between the yard, the sparmaker and sailmaker we must have had more than 30 engineers, designers and support staff involved in the study of Vertigo . To complicate matters, we were all living and working in different parts of the world, in different time zones.

Andrew provided an efficient communication platform that allowed us to work in an organised fashion. This was key to the success of the design execution.

In short, we had a fantastic sponsor. I wrote the music, Andrew was the conductor but the orchestra gave the performance; as a team we hope the audience will cheer.

All the players quickly understood they were part of an exceptional project. We had all been given a unique and wonderful opportunity to design and build a new breed of super sailing yacht that was to comply with the owners’ specifications but that would also evolve to be an iconic design.

The ambiance among us all was very positive. Of course, the physical distance presented some logistical difficulties. But everybody was flexible in overcoming these issues.

For example, in December 2009, Alloy Yachts shipped a replica of one of the cabins in a container up to Paris. We rented a cinema where the layout of the yacht and the furniture was drawn up in full scale, all 67 metres, so the owner and the design team were able to spend a day on board the boat – in Paris!

As these yachts become larger and larger, issues of crew and guest safety take on greater importance and relevance. Can you talk about particular safety issues and how you addressed them?

Of course, safety is the most important concern. The issue of safety is always present throughout every single step of the study process. As far as the hull is concerned she complies with all the existing required rules for boats above 50m and 500GT.

The rules and regulations are very stringent and we take great care to respect and adhere to them. However, they also lead to further complexity and can add weight. The additional weight in turn increases the loads on the sailing gear, such as the rig, sails, sheets, winches, blocks etc.

The big difference is that the sailing equipment is not subject to any rules and we have to create and customize them for one specific yacht. There are almost no empirical data available. Equipment of this size is rare, as there are very few existing yachts of this size and the experience in using those systems is very limited.

One also needs to take into account that the sailing equipment is in constant motion and is therefore more sensitive to wear and tear, resulting in a higher risk. Through careful engineering and in-depth experience one can, and one has, significantly reduced these risks. It is highly important to work with competent designers, shipyards and engineers who use the best tools for calculations.

Their expertise and seamanship allow them to ‘feel’ the behaviour of such a huge sailing yacht and to identify the most loaded cases.

It is also highly important that the crew have considerable experience, as the forces are at all times gargantuan. The crew need to monitor the yacht at all times and stay within the performance envelope on which all the equipment calculations have been based. The human factor still remains critical and of great importance every step of the way.

Apart from size, what in your view are the outstanding features of this yacht that will set it apart from other contemporary superyachts?

This is our first design in the category of sailing vessels with two decks and a flybridge. Often these are not considered true sailing ships and their style is considered old-fashioned.

The owner of Vertigo has given us the opportunity to create a yacht in this class which is unique for three key reasons: she is designed with a contemporary lifestyle as the guiding principle, she is an exceptionally sensitive sailing yacht, and she incorporates some of the best technology of our time. She is a super sailing yacht of the 2010s, inspired by the future.

Rupert murdoch’s newest sailing yacht: vertigo.

Designed by Philippe Briand, Vertigo is the seventh largest sailing yacht in the world and its owner is Rupert Murdoch, the famous magnate behind News Corporation. The beautiful 220-foot vessel boasts lovely interiors by renowned decorator Christian Liaigre. This is not the first time Liaigre is working for Murdoch and the business tycoon is not the first celebrity for whom Liaigre has worked. Karl Lagerfeld, Calvin Klein and other resonant names have also appealed to Liaigre’s expertise and talent. Vertigo can accommodate 12 guests and a crew of 11 in five luxuriously appointed staterooms. Everything on the yacht is impressive and spells abundance, like the massive owner’s suite or the convertible gym. Another vessel of Murdoch’s that has been decorated by Christian Liaigre is the 184-ft Rosehearty superyacht from 2006. The billionaire apparently didn’t have to sell his older yacht in order to buy Vertigo. Rosehearty was recently spotted near the Formentera island, where the magnate visited his 40-year-old son Lachlan Murdoch for his birthday anniversary. The yacht can comfortably accommodate ten guests in five suites and can be chartered for approximately $300,000 per week whenever Murdoch doesn’t need it. (4)

Alloy yachts is progressing well, and as planned, in the building of sailing yacht Vertigo which is a massive 67 meter (67.2m / 220ft) long ketch rigged superyacht. The new yacht is scheduled to be officially launched at the Auckland, New Zealand shipyard at the end of 2010. Superyacht Vertigo is a Philippe Briand designed luxury yacht and the hull project was previously known by build number AY41. The yacht is now in the fitting process and has taken the name “Vertigo”. Construction of the Vertigo yacht began around two years ago in October of 2008 and the new build boat hull and fitting has been moving steadily at the experienced shipyard, almost under a veil of secrecy, until details have now begun to properly surface.

The Vertigo luxury yacht will be an important private sailing yacht launch on a worldwide scale, and the vessel is also certainly another milestone for the New Zealand large superyacht builder, Alloy. Alloy Yachts also launched their then largest yacht, the new sailing yacht “Kokomo” (AY39) at the end of 2009 which is an impressive 58.40 meters in length overall. With S/Y Vertigo the Auckland, New Zealand yacht builder shipyard is now set to break this benchmark again in late 2010, in terms of size and luxury, with the launch and delivery of the 67 m ketch, slightly less than one year down the track.

From Alloy Yachts:

Alloy Yachts is proud to finally announce to the world the project that has kept everyone guessing for quite some time. In October 2008, Alloy Yachts began building the largest sailing yacht in their yard to date, the 220’ Briand ketch simply known as AY41. The interior design of the yacht is by the uber cool French designer, Christian Liaigre who’s brief from the client was for the yacht to feel “Urban at Sea”. Phillippe Briand’s brief from the client was to make this design a performance sailing yacht capable of world cruising. AY41 (Vertigo) will be launched in late 2010.

Sailing Yacht Vertigo’s Designers:

Philippe Briand enjoys a very successful track record in designing relatively fast, sleek and good looking performance type cruising yachts. In this tradition, luxury yacht Vertigo has easy on the eye and streamlined lines from bow to stern. This grace has been accomplished despite her impressive size and the fact that a spacious flybridge superstructure has been incorporated snugly into her lines. This is helped by her vast waterline length and efficient sail plan which utilises two masts to reduce constraints on mast height (for the Panama Canal) and other rig management inefficiencies. Essentially, superyacht Vertigo is a massive private sailing yacht and due consideration has been given by her designer to allow her design to maximize and optimize the use of the wind, hence her designed sail plan. All in all, superyacht Vertigo is destined to be a powerful boat under sail and her sailing performance will no doubt impress at any superyacht rally or yacht racing regattas.

Indeed, she is expected to reach near 20 knots in 20 knots of true wind, however, actual sea trials later in 2010 or early 2011 will confirm theses figures officially. Under motor she will be able to make an impressive speed of 17 knots with a range of near 4,000 nautical miles at 12 knots.

Sailing Yacht Vertigo - Foredeck and Flybridge View

The Vertigo yacht has an interior which was designed by Christian Liaigre. Christian Liaigre is a French interior designer who is strongly associated with furniture design. He respects and promotes the principles of understatement and simplicity and yet is known to be able to interweave a touch of poetry and natural material in his work when appropriate. His design work is considered to “have generated a creative spirit based on the use of materials such as wood weathered by the sea and the sand, as well as fine leathers worked according to the traditions of saddle making.”

The luxury yacht’s interior design colour palette called for a light and airy atmosphere using walnuts and expanses of white surfaces with darkened sand blasted woods. This background allows for the custom designed furniture to blend seamlessly with the yacht owner’s considerations and preferences. And indeed the superstructure design of yacht Vertigo (Philippe Briand) has been covered with windows which enables a life spring of natural light to illuminate the Liaigre designed interior.

The Yacht’s Luxury Accommodations:

The owner of Vertigo has a wonderful master cabin which is located to aft of amidships. In addition, four guest rooms are gathered around the core of the boat, with crew accommodation positioned further forward towards her bow. Te crew area component is large enough to accommodate for up to 11 members. Moving further to aft of the Master cabin is a lazarette garage which is to be used for the storage and maintenance of water toys, along with other peripheral marine equipment. Likewise, at the other end of the huge private sailing superyacht, in the bow, locker styled pockets have been designed and built to house a pair of 6 meter yacht tenders. From there the tenders can be deployed and launched from the deck of the bow, without reducing space and functionality of the luxury yacht’s ever treasured water interface – her aft transom area.

Alloy Yachts, one of New Zealand’s (and the World’s) most noteworthy and well respected superyacht ship building yards, is well on course to finishing and launching their largest build to date – yacht Vertigo is set to officially launch in December 2010 and she will then be delivered early in 2011 to her eager owners. It will be very interesting to see how the yacht is judged if she enters any world superyacht awards.

A Closer Look at Feadship Superyacht Vertigo

Very few purchases can cement a person’s status as much as a yacht. These ships impress upon viewers the supreme style, confidence, wealth, and sophistication of the owner. While yachts range in size, larger yachts tend to offer superior comfort and features. These superyachts are able to provide spacious accommodations and lounging areas, as well as a wide variety of features for entertainment and recreation. Superyachts provide passengers with a well-rounded cruise experience.

However, such incredible experiences are not cheap. Chartering or purchasing a superyacht is a highly expensive venture, so individuals should be certain about their choice before proceeding. In order to have confidence in choosing a yacht, a person should look at the shipyard where it was constructed. One shipyard that is recognized as an industry leader is Feadship . Not only has this company produced consistently impressive ships; it also has a long history that dates back to 1849. Since this time, the company has produced over 250 custom yachts. This award-winning brand has been responsible for some of the industry’s most important innovations. It is a partnership of several Dutch shipyards. Their combined resources allow Feadship to routinely create award-winning vessels.

One ship that is sure to make an immediate impact on the yacht industry is the Vertigo by Feadship. This large superyacht is currently under construction, and features an innovative design. As well, its accommodations and entertainment features rival even the most highly-regarded superyachts on the market. With Vertigo, Feadship continues its legacy of building industry leading ships.

This superyacht hosts spacious accommodations and an abundance of features. In order to combine such options without crowding, it is quite large. The ship is 96 meters in length, and boasts 6 tastefully appointed guest decks that are replete with every luxury imaginable. As well, there are 7 guest cabins and two additional convertible cabins that provide accommodations for up to 18 guests. This ship is set to become Feadship’s newest industry leading yacht.

Its exterior is incredibly elegant and sophisticated. It was designed by Redman Whitely Dixon, and is defined by graceful, large, and sweeping curves. Further, it features Feadship’s characteristic flared bow. The interior of the yacht was designed by Paris-based Chahan Interior Design. The gorgeous interior is defined by spaciousness, style, and the generous use of natural lighting. Warm colors and luxurious materials ensure that the ship is both welcoming and sophisticated.

Accommodations and Comfort

While those interested in a superyacht may look forward to the amenities and entertainment features, the accommodations of the Vertigo are an attraction in themselves. The ship boasts 7 gorgeous guest cabins, each of which is thoughtfully designed. In addition, there are quarters for up to 34 crew members. In addition to its wide range of exciting features, this yacht has spared no expense on creating the most luxurious cabins possible.

Vertigo’s accommodations were crafted in collaboration with an experienced yacht owner, ensuring that they are open and spacious. The most impressive cabin is, naturally, the Owner’s Suite. This expansive suite features its own lounge, large wardrobe, and his-and-hers bathrooms. In addition, it was designed with incredible wraparound windows for the perfect view. As well, there are two spacious VIP Staterooms and four Double Cabins available for friends and family. The ship also contains two additional convertible cabins. Each cabin comes equipped with en suite facilities.

While the ship’s accommodations are so lovely that they are nearly a resort in themselves, the yacht features several wonderful areas for lounging and relaxing. Most notably, this includes the large main saloon, which features a large lounge, full bar, and formal dining area. The Bridge Deck is also perfect for relaxing, as it was designed as a club lounge. It features generous seating, massive windows, a full bar, humidor, and grand piano. In addition to the indoor lounge areas, the exterior decks of the ship are excellent for soaking in the sunshine or enjoying al fresco dining.

There are also several enjoyable features outside of the accommodations and lounge areas. Most importantly, this includes a gorgeous infinity pool constructed of reinforced glass that is located in the main deck aft. This pool actually forms the ceiling for the beach club below. Additional features include the at-anchor stabilizers to ensure a comfortable and smooth on-board experience, and the gorgeous woods, leathers, and marbles that were used in the construction of the ship.

While the Vertigo has rightfully garnered a great deal of praise for its luxurious accommodations and versatile lounging areas, it also comes equipped with a wide range of entertainment options. For streaming music, movies, and videos, as well as keeping up with friends and family, the ship comes equipped with fast wireless Internet access.

As well, the ship boasts several large televisions and impressive sound systems. This includes a cutting-edge entertainment system located in each of the guest cabins. In addition to these options that allow for personal or small group entertainment, the ship includes its own movie theater. Perfect for larger groups, this theater is a wonderful option for enjoying luxury and entertainment with friends and family.

Just as with its thoughtful layout and accommodations, Feadship has left no stone unturned when it comes to the yacht’s entertainment systems. From personal devices to a large movie theater, the Vertigo comes equipped with entertainment options to keep every passenger happy and preoccupied while cruising.

Not only does the Vertigo host incredible accommodations and a wide range of entertainment options, it also comes equipped with gear and toys that will provide guests with a great deal of fun and excitement on the water.

Most impressively, the yacht hosts four luxurious tenders. These include a 10-meter custom Feadship Limousine, a 10-meter custom Feadship Open Tender, a 7-meter X-Craft Tender, and a 5.7-meter X-Craft Tender. Further, there are a wide array of toys for playing in the water, as well as included gear for exploring beneath the surface.

Although most guests would be satisfied with luxurious accommodations, expansive lounge areas, and a wide range of entertainment features, the Vertigo also provides many options for recreation.

What truly sets the ship apart from other comparable superyachts is its incredible array of leisure facilities. This remarkable superyacht ensures that passengers are properly pampered with a massive beach club. Located at sea level, this beach club is located directly below the stunning glass infinity pool. Its revolutionary design features three fold-down balconies. It leads directly to a spa with a fully functional massage studio and steam room.

In addition, the Sundeck also features a fully equipped gym. From lifting weights to practicing yoga, the Vertigo ensures that guests need not deviate from their fitness programs. This is a superyacht that concerned not only with providing guests with a great deal of fun and excitement, but also ensuring that the cruise experience is relaxing and luxurious.

PRESENTING VERTIGO

In 2011, Alloy Yachts of New Zealand launched sail yacht VERTIGO. In specific, their largest yacht to date. At 837 GRT, the 67.2-meter Alloy Yacht VERTIGO was the largest luxury sailing charter vessel. Specifically, to be built in the Southern Hemisphere. It took 29 months to build and design by Philippe Briand.

ADDITIONAL ALLOY YACHTS

Other charter yachts similar to sailing yacht VERTIGO and built by Alloy are Yacht KOKOMO , megayacht TIARA , sailing megayacht RED DRAGON , and superyacht MONDANGO .

The owner challenged Briand to design a yacht. In specific, one that is large and is “sensitive to sail.”  When sailing in strong winds, she reaches speeds of almost 20 knots. When light winds are present, she outperforms all other luxury sailing charter vessels.  She is truly magnificent.

SWIMMING POOL

The design of the exterior areas allows guests to be outside, yet sheltered from the elements. The aft cockpit has a large hard-top featuring lateral sliding windows. The flybridge is open as well but can be protected by a removable bimini top. The sun pads at the rear of the cockpit conceal a swimming pool.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The interior design is by Christian Liaigre. The lower deck layout offers four guest rooms and a large owner’s cabin aft. The passage from this cabin leads directly to the lazarette and swim platform.

The saloon on the main deck has natural light. Most surfaces are white with tinted walnut and black sandblasted wood accents. Complementary furniture has been custom design to match perfectly with the sporty spirit of the yacht.

Vertigo 220

The sea trial was pubblished on Superyacht 29 – summer 2011

Vertigo is the largest sailing yacht ever built by New Zealand’s Alloy Yachts and the biggest ever designed by Philippe Briand.

Alloy Vertigo 220

The story goes back to 2004, with initial drafts for a 200 footer, followed by some important evolutions that have led to today’s 220. The basic challenge for Philippe Briand was to design a sailing yacht with lots of beam but that would nevertheless be fast.

To achieve both results it proved necessary to adopt a very modern hull design for which, for example, the designer chose a vertical bow, thus increasing waterline length and so optimising performance in terms of top speed both under sail and power.

Naturally, among other requests there were those that concern air clearance and draught, this so as to allow Vertigo to sail the Suez Canal. The main mast is 68 m high and draught has been kept to 5 m, but underway can be extended to 9.10 m thanks to a dagger-board extension.

So as to achieve all this, together with the high level of performance requested by the customer, the designer developed a particularly efficient sail plan, capable of maximising the potential of the yacht’s hull. A ketch rig was chosen, which, given the dimensions involved, we find good for a number of reasons, and it is nevertheless capable of guaranteeing Vertigo truly amazing performance.

Top speed under sail is 20 knots, with true winds of the same speed, whilst with light winds under 10 knots performance is still outstanding. This has been achieved thanks to a number of clever solutions, such as mains with lots of roach so as to exploit the winds near the top of the sail, where, as we all know, it’s strongest.

This makes for a truly powerful rig, especially as compared to traditional triangular sails. As you will by now have understood, there are many high-tech solutions that have been adopted for the very first time on this massive sailing yacht, but this is after all a highly innovative design, which aims to be a point of reference for the world of cruiser/racers.

For this reason, also the companies that have taken part in the project with their products, and before that the design aspects for such a mighty one-off, have come up with a number of firsts, such as is the case for Southern Spars, that have designed and made running backstays in place of permanent backstays. As to performance under power, here too the numbers are remarkable: a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 12, at which Vertigo can sail for 4,000 miles. But the many cool things that can be defined as original on this ketch are also others, such as the main lazarette amidships instead of astern, as it is in most cases.

This makes getting back on board from the tender far easier and safer. As to tenders, Vertigo can host an 8 metre in the stern garage, plus two 6 metre tenders sunk out of sight into purpose made lockers in the foredeck. Outside, there are plenty of areas where to relax, as there are inside, but there’s no doubt that the presence of a flybridge contributes to adding to open-air space.

For example, the stern cockpit has a large hard top, with hideaway side windows and rotating flaps on the roof that can be adjusted both for extra light and ventilation. The flybridge, with its sun pad, divans, bar area with coffee table, armchairs and other seating, has a retractable hide-away bimini top.

The sun pad here hides a “spa pool”. The interior is just incredibly comfortable, and designed with long range cruising in mind. The interior design and layout are by Christian Liaigre, who has created an atmosphere he himself defines as “urban at sea”.

The white on lacquered surfaces harmoniously combined with materials and accessories, over and above guaranteeing plenty of light everywhere, give the whole a sober and elegant look. There’s decidedly lots of room inside this yacht, it’s no chance that the designer was able to fit in a massive owner’s suite astern with central bed, double bathroom with WC and two tubs, vanity table, office corner, and a sofa set lengthways with coffee table and armchair.

The whole is very comfortable thanks to its size and well lit thanks to as many as 12 portholes. Just forward of the owner’s suite there are a further four cabins, two of which have an identical twin bed layout, each with bathroom en suite, plus a further two that can host up to three guests each, depending on how the beds are arranged: a double and a single or three singles. These too have bathrooms en suite with separate toilet.

Forward of this is the main lazarette mentioned above, accessible from both sides thanks to lateral openings, and at its centre partially divided by a day-head. The forward section is entirely dedicated to the crew’s quarters, which clearly shows how it’s been conceived to ensure crew comfort that can warrant a level of general wellbeing.

The galley too is in this section of the boat, alongside the crew’s mess and pantry. All crew’s cabins have their own head and lead into a central corridor that starts in the mess. The main deck is dedicated to relaxation without compromise, in effect, apart the large cockpit with dining table, sun pad, divans, coffee tables and armchairs set under the rigid top described above, there is also a large living room below the coach roof.

This section is divided into different live-aboard areas, where divans, coffee tables, multimedia systems, bar, dining area and floods of natural light all contribute to making it a very pleasant place, whatever the weather conditions one might be sailing in. The forward section of this part of the yacht holds the wheelhouse, with direct access to the crew’s quarters, a day head and the captain’s office.

Vertigo is undoubtedly a sailing ship capable of confirming Alloy Yachts’ ability to build such a giant and Philippe Briand’s talent for designing one, and for sure this time round that was quite a challenge.

Keeping Up With the Bezoses: Zuckerberg Buys $300M Superyacht

Keeping Up With the Bezoses: Zuckerberg Buys $300M Superyacht

By Lee Barney    |   Friday, 22 March 2024 10:41 AM EDT

Mark Zuckerberg is now the proud owner of a $300 million, 387-foot-long superyacht he has christened “Launchpad,” The Sun, U.S. edition, reports .

Originally commissioned by Russian oligarch Vladimir Potanin and built in the Netherlands, the yacht can sleep 24 and comes with a helipad and $30 million companion boat, as is customary for yachts of this scale.

Seen docked this week at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Launchpad requires a crew of 48 and costs $30 million a year for upkeep. That should not be a problem for Zuckerberg, the 4 th richest person in the world with a net worth of $180 billion , according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The Meta Chairman and CEO earns between $6 million and $12 million a day, amounting to more than $3 billion a year, according to Business Insider estimates.

Zuckerberg was seen touring the ship in early March, and the vessel was first spotted in U.S. waters on March 20. Due to sanctions against Potanin, delivery was delayed — but comes just in time for the billionaire’s 40 th birthday on May 14.

By comparison, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, currently ranked as the world’s richest individual with a net worth of $201 billion, has a $500 million, 417-foot tall mega yacht named Koru, that has a swimming pool and helipad. The superyacht’s companion yacht, the Abeona, has a 264-foot garage to house Bezos’ luxury cars, private helicopter and jet skis.

Zuckerberg's new trophy grants him entry into ports frequented by other multibillionaires such as Larry Ellison and Bill Gates, as well as sanctioned Russian oligarchs.

It is not known when or how Zuckerberg acquired the vessel.

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht screamed 'I will kill you' and threw $100 bills into the water when told he couldn't use a private dock

  • The owner of a Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee, per CBS8.
  • The employee said Ajay Thakore mooned and threw cash at him after being told he couldn't use the dock.
  • Thakore, the CEO of Doctor Multimedia, issued an apology through his public relations team.

Insider Today

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee after being told he couldn't be there, the San Diego-based broadcaster CBS8 reported on March 11.

Joseph Holt, a 21-year-old employee at Marriot Marina in San Diego, told CBS8 that he spotted the yacht sailing into the private dock. The owner, whom CBS8 identified as Ajay Thakore, tried to pick another person up at the dock, Holt said.

"I told him respectfully that he couldn't be there, and I honestly was hoping to have a conversation with him about his cool boat," Holt told CBS8.

In a YouTube video posted by @SM-wc9eq on March 10, a dark blue Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is seen sailing out of a dock. A man in a gray T-shirt, a pair of jeans, and a cap was shown standing on the yacht. The man appeared to be Thakore, per CBS8.

Thakore was shown shouting at Holt. "I will kill you, you know I will kill you!" he can be heard saying multiple times in the video

Thakore was later shown pounding his fist on his palm and pointing his thumb down before telling Holt: "To your face!" Holt was shown responding by pointing his middle finger at Thakore.

"I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird," Holt told CBS8.

Related stories

Holt said Thakore then took $100 bills from his wallet and threw them at him. He added that Thakore mooned him. This exchange was not shown in the video.

"He was saying I'm nobody, I'm nothing, I work a silly job. He said that he knows people, he has connections, he can change my life and ruin it," Holt said. Holt did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

The San Diego Harbor Police arrived at the marina 10 minutes after Thakore's yacht exited the dock, per CBS8.

The Harbor Police told Business Insider that Holt decided to press charges against Thakore and that they are investigating the incident.

According to Thakore's LinkedIn page , he's the CEO of Doctor Multimedia. The company's website shows that it's a healthcare marketing firm based in San Diego. Thakore appears to go by the name Ace Rogers on Instagram and TikTok, where he's noted as being a professional gambler.

Thakore, through his public relations team, told CBS8 in a statement that his altercation with Holt was "regrettable."

"What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange," the statement said. Thakore did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

Thakore isn't the only CEO who's been called out for threatening another person. In November 2021, an Activision spokesperson told BI that its ex-CEO Bobby Kotick had previously apologized for telling his assistant he would have her killed. The spokesperson added that Kotick's threat was "obviously hyperbolic and inappropriate" and that "he deeply regrets the exaggeration and tone."

In June 2020, Lisa Alexander, the CEO of LaFace Skincare, a cosmetics company, apologized in a statement to the media after she had threatened to call the police on her neighbor for writing "Black Lives Matter" on his property. Alexander said in the apology that she was "disrespectful" and "should have minded my own business."
