Review of the highly acclaimed Lürssen superyacht SOLANDGE which, since her launch in 2013, has become one of the world’s most impressive luxury charter yachts.
Born from a desire to create something truly special, the 85m/279’ superyacht SOLANDGE represents an Owner’s vision realised in spectacular form, evoking an endless stream of superlatives from all that see her.
Built under the name of ‘Project Nikki’, the highly anticipated superyacht SOLANDGE was delivered to her Owner’s in October 2013 as one of the world’s largest yachts. Lürssen were an obvious choice for her Owner’s, having previously owned a 63m/207’7 built by the shipyard that they had bought and refitted, giving them solid experience of both the industry and the charter market. After signing a contract in 2007 for a slot that would not become available until 2010, they were given the luxury of time to grow, refine and perfect their ideas to what would make an exceptional vessel. SOLANDGE would be a superyacht that offered pleasure and efficiency in equal measure, something that could encompass the lifestyle of yachting while being engineered for self-sufficiency during extended voyages on the high seas.
SOLANDGE would be a superyacht that offered pleasure and efficiency in equal measure, something that could encompass the lifestyle of yachting while being engineered for self-sufficiency during extended voyages on the high seas.
To do this, a team of the industry’s best known names would be assembled, to include project manager Richard Masters, exterior designer Espen Oeino and interior designer Aileen Rodriguez. Masters was a permanent on-site fixture throughout the process and the Owner’s already established crew were brought into the build team to give input from their individual expertise. Renowned for exceptional organisation and meticulous attention to detail that only comes with experience, Lürssen were also able to adopt specific design specifications from other yachts to add to SOLANDGE’s design to ensure success overall. The folding and lowering stern stairs, an adaptation of those developed for use on motor yacht QUATTROELLE are a good example of this.
Exterior SOLANDGE is nearly 20 meters longer and one meter wider than her predecessor so her basic design model was based on a modern 80m hull and engineering platform similar to that of PHEONIX 2 , ACE and QUATTROELLE. Her epic proportions however have been expertly arranged by Oeino into a collection of comfortable, multi-functional living areas for guests to relax and spend time together along with a vast selection of facilities that include bars, buffets, dining areas, a pool and two hot tubs. These expansive spaces are encased by fluid lines and soft, voluminous shapes combined with dynamic edges to create something modern and energetic while the white line that cuts through her dark blue hull emphasizes the feeling strength.
Interior On completion, Lürssen described SOLANDGE as ultimately ‘having what it takes to become an iconic yacht on the charter market’. It is clear that great lengths were gone to throughout her build to create a vessel that could compete with the best yachts on the market. This attention to detail is beautifully exhibited in her interior styling, where materials such as 49 different marble and granite surfaces and 33 alternative woods have been brought together in a fusion of quality and exclusivity.
Having already established a relationship with the Owner’s when working on the refit of their previous yacht as well as on the family residences, Aileen Rodriguez was able to produce a style and use of spaces based on a proven understanding of what the client needed.
The lighted sculpture contains more than 1,200 points of light which act as tropical rain drops bringing coloured glass flowers to life.
Main Deck SOLANDGE’s interior is full to the brim with unique and intricate design features and upon entering her main deck foyer, guests are greeted by her most central and spectacular element. The beautiful dark wood and onyx inlay flooring gives way to a magnificent sculpture, known on board as the ‘Tree of Life’, that runs the full 16m height from the tank deck up to the bridge deck. The lighted sculpture contains more than 1,200 points of light which act as tropical rain drops bringing coloured glass flowers to bloom. This is encircled by a floating staircase which is in turn encompassed by an antique Venetian mirror and edge-lit, hand-carved art glass in addition to an all-access elevator clad in custom leather panels in a variation of colours and textures.
Main Salon Moving aft of the foyer you are given direct access into the 172 square metre main salon featuring two striking floor-to-ceiling panels of LED backlit amethyst quartz. Unlike many yachts in this size range, the salon offers one large living area to include a centrally placed dining table. This stunning piece of furniture, intricately constructed with burl inlays and adorned with semi-precious stones, Mother of Pearl and gold leaf sits majestically underneath three amethyst and rose quartz chandeliers which together ensure the area is no less formal than that of a dedicated room.
Forward of the dining table is a comfortable seating area surrounding a stylish fireplace and discreetly placed large television screen. Further aft, there is an additional seating and conversational opposite a stunning curved bar formed of art glass and panels of purple fabric that match the amethyst stone top patched with crystal glass. Rodriguez has successfully communicated decorative, luxurious details into a stylish and modern framework in the interior styling, describing it as ‘classical touches with a contemporary backdrop, making it a transitional interior’. The fabrics and furniture upholstery blends perfectly with the precious materials, with varying tones of purple and gold creating an opulent yet not overpowering ambience.
VIP Stateroom With its ample proportions and gentle feeling of understated opulence, the VIP stateroom could easily be mistaken for the master suite. Large windows and high ceilings create a sense of space while the intricate woodwork, soft lighting and colour palette of green and gold hues ensure an atmosphere of warmth.
Staterooms Aft of the main foyer are SOLANDGE’s five guest staterooms and guest office, a location that was specifically requested by her Owner prior to the design. The cabins were designed to offer flexible accommodation and the huge VIP stateroom can be transformed into two separate cabins when required.
Master Deck Occupying half of the upper deck is the yacht’s spectacular dedicated Owner’s area, comprising an apartment with a private office, his and hers dressing rooms and bathrooms, all encased by 180 degree windows that offer views out over the outdoor seating and private spa pool. Here, Rodriguez has created a completely personalised space featuring carefully hand-picked pieces of furniture with Murano works picked directly from the artists’ workshop in Venice. 14 hand-carved, back-lit glazed columns line the walls between the windows, each presenting a series of botanical scenes. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and the his and hers bathrooms have been designed with just as much attention as the stateroom, incorporating exquisite rose quartz counter tops and exotic stone, wood, glass, gold leaf and mother of pearl ceiling inserts.
Skylounge In the sumptuous upper deck lounge, the Owner’s and the designer’s love for colour and creativity has been showcased using a warm, earthy palette against luxe metallic accents. A myriad of textures, tones and bronze details in the bookcases and picture frames have been used, all set below a spectacular three-tonne crystal glass and bronze dome.
Aft Deck Leading out from the upper deck lounge games table are floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open out onto SOLANDGE’s expansive and versatile aft deck. The functionality of her outdoor spaces was an integral part of Espen Oeino’s directive, commenting that: ‘The large exterior living spaces reflect the current trend for outdoor decks that mirror all the interior functions for guest living. Arranging spaces to lounge, eat, drink and play becomes a major factor. The outdoor furniture on SOLANDGE is complex and incorporates edge lighting features that allow entertainment to be spontaneous.’
Here there is a large, comfortable seating area which can be protected from the elements by glass panels that line the aft deck while triangular awnings fixed on carbon-fibre poles provide shade from the sun. The aft deck also houses one of the pools on board, all of which are mosaic-clad infinity tubs mounted above deck level, this one being a 6m jet flow surrounded by comfortable sun beds, seating areas and a bar.
Aft of the bridge deck, guests can indulge in a spa facility akin to that of a high-end luxury spa, offering a steam room, large sauna, massage room and beauty salon connecting to the gym and outdoor swimming pool. A colour-shifting glass-bubble provides ambience and privacy for the massage suite – all creating a full-equipped resort complex standard.
Sundeck A stairway from the upper decks leads to her fantastic sundeck. By day, this area is ideal for relaxation in the sun on the sunpads or the U-shaped seating placed under draped tent material.
There is a stunning centrally placed horseshoe shaped bar with a gold mosaic finish, while tucked away to starboard is a romantic bed-sized platform piled high with cushions, the perfect spot to stargaze on a clear evening.
Beach Club For more casual daytime activities, SOLADNGE’s huge aft swim platform offers a relaxed beach club atmosphere where guests can enjoy the cool breeze and connection to the water. There is a full shower and sauna here as well as a pantry for crew to conveniently prepare drinks and snacks. It also provides easy access to the yacht’s artillery of toys and tenders that include a NAIAD Inflatable Rib Centre Console Tender (10.5 metres) and one Centurion Enzo Wake Boarding Tender (7.32 metres), both of which can also be launched sideways through the shell doors.
After the sun goes down, this entire deck can be transformed into a fully-fledged entertainment hub.
After the sun goes down, this entire deck can be transformed into a fully-fledged entertainment hub. Glass Perspex covers the Jacuzzi to create a dance floor and twinkling lights illuminate the deck around the specially built DJ booth with large screen for music videos or game viewing. Treated water for both the pool on the bridge and the Jacuzzi on the top deck is stored in separate holding tanks with individual temperatures so that the pool and the Jacuzzi are ready for use at short notice.
Crew Crew comfort while cruising was very important to the Owner during the design process. The 11, which include a pair of sisters and a father and son team charter crew on board joined SOLANDGE together with their Captain Ainsworth from the family’s previous yacht. She is the first Lürssen with crew passage access from both levels of the engine room to increase efficiency and eliminate traffic jams and crew pathways throughout are wide and well-appointed to accommodate handfuls of supplies and loads of laundry. There is also a separate crew lift which makes it possible to transfer goods, people and even wine from the yachts 500 bottle cellar in the tank deck.
Every aspect of the design and finish of SOLANDGE has evidently been given the time and respect that a superyacht of this calibre requires. Each area has a purpose and every detail has a meaning which not only ensures something special for the Owner but also an experience like no other for those lucky enough to charter her.
Lürssen described SOLANDGE as ultimately ‘having what it takes to become an iconic yacht on the charter market’.

Solandge: On board the 85m Lürrsen superyacht designed for pure enjoyment
With Lürssen’s 85 metre superyacht Solandge , every bit makes sure you are having a good time, every element is about living life to the fullest. And it’s not by accident. Solandge , says Richard Masters, the yacht’s project and operations manager, had a long design incubation.
‘The owners had another, smaller Lürssen that they bought on the brokerage market and refitted,’ Masters says. ‘They knew they wanted to build their own yacht at Lürssen, so in 2007 signed a contract for a slot that wouldn’t even become available until 2010, which gave them a tremendous amount of time to refine their ideas. They looked at a great many yachts in the meantime, while a special team was assembled to help the shipyard implement the owners’ plans.’
Solandge is nearly 20 metres longer and one metre wider than her predecessor, and offers one more guest cabin – a full-beam VIP. But as chief engineer Travis Ludbrook says, ‘In terms of the technology that was available to the new build, the nine years makes a tremendous difference.’
Along with design details and an insistence on the comfort of everyone aboard, sound and vibration engineering were two hot-button issues. Decibel levels were part of the construction contract, although Masters says the yard exceeded the requirement by 20 per cent in some places.
Delivered in 2013, Solandge is based on a modern 80 metre hull and engineering platform similar to that of Lürssen superyacht Phoenix2 , superyacht Ace and Quattroelle , ‘The yard’s record keeping is exceptional; if they find something they think is an improvement, whether is it a material or a process, they just adopt it.’ The folding and lowering stern stairs, an adaptation of those developed for use on Lürssen’s 88m superyacht Quattroelle , launched in 2012 , are a good example.
All custom yachts by definition present an owner’s vision. With a yacht beyond 60 metres LOA, even a bit of tentativeness translates to a great deal of cautious, repetitive conservatism or worse, confusion that goes beyond eclecticism. Solandge is innocent on both counts. Both Masters and the yacht’s interior designer, Eileen Rodriguez , begin their description of the yacht and her build process with the phrase, ‘The owner had a vision.’ That would seem to be an understatement. So would the designer’s comment, ‘They like bright colour.’
Espen Øino was asked to create a profile design based on the owners’ experience with the previous vessel. This included all guest suites on the main deck along with a rather grand saloon area and an owners’ deck above. During the design period, however, Øino says it became clear that they were prepared to push boundaries and explore more innovative exterior forms.
The final product is a mix of gracious, soft shapes and aggressive hard lines and knuckles; opposite but complementary languages that generate energy. The curves, Øino notes, are mostly in the longitudinal planes with the hard edges on the transverse. The exterior paint scheme, especially the white sheer line, adds emphasis. In combination with the white boot stripe, it optically lowers the yacht’s massive freeboard at the transom, making her seem less formidable from the water.
Step two in the brief was to create many places for guests and family to hang out together or chill-out alone. Øino’s directive was to give each deck and space a distinctive function plus create the supporting furniture and built-ins such as bars, buffets, dining areas, a pool and two hot tubs. With so much space to work with, he was able to incorporate an exterior cinema and nightclub with DJ station on the top deck, an indoor/outdoor gym, a sheltered main-deck reception area aft and a private outdoor seating area in front of the owners’ suite. Build captain Maxx Ainsworth adds, ‘We were able to fit in a substantial tender garage, a full dive centre and a sauna aft with access to the swim platform.’
Pushing boundaries was also an aspect of the yacht’s interior, both in scope and detail. To achieve an open plan living area on main deck, the spacious aft deck opens onto a multifunctional saloon of more than 172 square metres, unbroken by supports.
Setting the tone for the exuberant, joyful fantasy named Solandge is the saloon entrance, two stunning floor-to-ceiling panels of LED backlit amethyst quartz. The stone is sliced thin and pieced together like a mosaic and sandwiched between clear glass. To port it is flanked by a Bechstein piano and to starboard by a Venetian console table. The large bar on port is also decked with amethyst and honey onyx, the stone that borders the hardwood floor.
Opposite the bar is a cosy seating area, then a massive dining table fitted fore and aft under Schonbek chandeliers dripping with amethyst and rose quartz crystals, and neatly engineered not to rattle. Forward of the dining area is a much larger seating area facing a fireplace and a TV screen concealed behind a painting of a musician. This is just one of the numerous spots throughout the yacht that is wired for karaoke – the owners sent their build engineer to discover the robust, high-end karaoke equipment used in the best clubs and bring the same Studio Evolution system to Solandge.
The yacht is divided at its axis by an atrium lobby dominated by a 15 metre lighted sculpture that has come to be known as the tree of life, inspired by the owner’s request to have something running the entire height of the vessel from the tank deck. Made in California, the sculpture contains 1,423 points of light, and is encircled by a magnificent stainless steel and leather bannister that anchors the floating staircase.
Forward of the lobby, the guest cabins are more modern, each with a different colour scheme. One is convertible to a guest office/media centre, while the VIP suite can be converted from a cabin with an attached sitting room to two separate cabins. Each half makes a spacious cabin, but together, the suite with its large windows, wardrobes and bath seems suitable as a master. That is, until you see the master suite on the deck above.
On the owner’s deck, the apartment includes a private office, his dressing room and bathroom, her dressing room and bathroom, and the cabin itself with 180-degree views overlooking the bow, outdoor seating and a private spa pool. All the spa pools on board are mosaic-clad infinity tubs mounted above deck level. Water flows over the top edge into a recess below teak grating. This keeps the pool and its surround from being a major, view-blocking structure.
Back inside the owner’s suite, a casual sitting room aft has a fireplace and a nautical theme, with a colour scheme similar to the upper saloon. Handmade Italian furniture includes a small table and chairs, a lady’s desk with a leather top and a chest of drawers, while hand-painted backlit window mullions depict themes from the Garden of Eden.
Guests can enjoy a top-notch spa facility aft on the bridge deck. Facilities consist of a spacious sauna, steam room, massage room and a beauty salon connecting to the gym and outdoor swimming pool. A colour-shifting glass-bubble wall provides ambiance and privacy for the massage suite.
The sun deck is large and multifunctional as per the owners’ directives. One beach-chic section features U-shaped seating under draped tent material. The centre deck focuses on a horseshoe-shaped bar with gold mosaic finish, while tucked away to starboard is a romantic bed-size platform piled high with cushions under a twinkly star overhead. With the open sunning space in full entertainment mode, the deck hosted 60 people for a New Year’s party. Guests thoroughly enjoyed a unique dance floor above the spa pool.
‘The large exterior living spaces reflect the current trend for outdoor decks that mirror all the interior functions for guest living,’ says Øino, ‘Arranging spaces to lounge, eat, drink and play becomes a major factor. The outdoor furniture on Solandge is complex and incorporates edge lighting and features that allow entertaining to be spontaneous.’
Which is a good place to bring up the service aspects built into Solandge : they are exceptional. ‘The owners care about service, but they care even more about the well-being of their crew,’ says Masters, ‘and he respects their input.’ In fact, 11 of the crew came with Captain Ainsworth from the previous boat, including a pair of sisters and a father and son team. Superyacht crew areas are designed with care, and crew pathways throughout the boat are ample and clever, so no need to squeeze by each other with a load of laundry or supplies.
Reflecting on the project, process and its conclusion, Rodriguez says, ‘The owners wanted every inch of this vessel to be special and have a meaning. It’s difficult to design 85 metre of “special”, but we have accomplished this for them in a very controlled way. We think it’s their dream come true.’ And a joyful one at that.
First published in the March 2014 edition of BOAT International. Solandge has since changed ownership after she was sold by Moran Yacht & Ship and SSH Maritime in 2017. She is currently available for charter with Fraser .

Video of superyacht Solandge:
Stepping aboard one is greeted by the very elegant main saloon, boasting two magnificent walls of back-lit amethyst, which is the first thing to notice and feel. There is a Bechstein piano on the port side and a beautiful Venetian console and mirror on the starboard side. The interior exudes elegance, luxury and opulence, as you walk through the beautiful wooden floors with borders of honey onyx stone and gold leaf ceilings with Schonbek chandeliers dripping with amethyst rose quartz crystals.
From the main saloon, continuing through to the main lobby, guests will find the main feature aboard this magnificent yacht: The Tree of Life. This is represented by a lighted sculpture which is 50’ high and has more than 1200 points of light. This impressive sculpture was designed to fulfil the wishes of the owner, who always envisioned something running the entire height of the vessel from the tank deck to the bridge deck. Following many design trials with Rodriguez Interiors, they have decided on this stunning art glass sculpture.
Walking up the superyacht from deck to deck, the spaces become more casual, reaching the Sun Deck where the designers have created a beach club feeling in ’Nikki Beach’ style. This area includes a bar clad in gold and white Bisazza tiles surrounded by 14 bar stools covered in gold leather flanked by two TVs. There is also a Spa Pool with a clear dance floor that lays on top for parties that can be hosted by anyone using the DJ console and booth. The Owner wished for every inch of SOLANDGE to feel special and have meaning.
The tender garage with very large doors is located to aft on her lower deck. She also has another doorway which could be used as a tender docking area in her hull and also as a beach swim platform.

"I once had a client who told me, “I will put your name on the side of my boat if it’s good, but if the boat is not good, your name will appear three times as big.” We were brought up with the sense that it is a very personal obligation for the family when we sign a contract to deliver a yacht that the client expects. I cannot go to a client and say “One of my guys made a mistake.” He would say “Is he Mr. Lürssen, or are you Mr. Lürssen?” But a successful delivery is also a great reward. I take the relationships of my clients very personally." - Peter Lürssen of Lürssen Yachts (courtesy SuperYachtTimes)
